Gangs of Sherwood is the definition of a one-trick pony. Its colorful and entertaining battles weaving the abilities and attacks of up to 4 players together are not just unique but also very fun to play. Sadly anything outside of combat fails to really leave much of an impression. The setting in a science-fantasy version of Nottingham definitely had potential, but little of it actually was used effectively. Instead the final product hides its most fun parts behind a wall of generic mediocrity. Those willing to stick with the game and bringing friends along will still have a wonderful time despite obvious flaws.

Gangs of Sherwood offers a simple formula that hits the mark. A few evenings of fun are in store, whether alone or with others, with this effective revisiting of the Robin Hood legend.

There is fun to be had in Gangs of Sherwood but it is really only found playing multiplayer either with friends or strangers. Not only does this make each act not feel as long, since there will be more people to pummel enemies but when players fall in combat it is better to have a friend pick you up than lose half your gold that you need to upgrade your character’s attributes. The entire game just feels like a mix-mash of ideas and things and while some things work, others are done better in other games.

A game that works okay, is good fun with a group of friends and capable of providing an interesting take on the Robin Hood myth, Gangs of Sherwood fills a gap. But I think the tone feels misguided and at times it all seems like it has been ripped from a previous generation of consoles.

Gangs of Sherwood is a cooperative action adventure title that had great potential. Unfortunately, strange mechanics and repetitive action hold it back. However, if you have a great group of friends, you can enjoy it casually.

Gangs of Sherwood was fun for 15 minutes. Every second after that was a dreadful monotony that I cannot recommend to anyone living or dead.
