If a fan of the series, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake cannot be recommended enough, with a beautiful reimagining that is hoped will continue in future releases beyond the first three games. If a newcomer to this and the genre as a whole, take comfort in how accessible this has been made, but beware: when those visuals and score fill the screen, being hooked for life is a real possibility.

This starts from a visual point of view with a more successful HD-2D style than ever that looks like an achievement for Team Asano. Controller in hand, the adventure benefits from so many comfort options that it becomes more fluid than ever and modular to satisfy all audiences. Thanks to all this, we find with great pleasure the feeling of freedom typical of Famicom games with gameplay that shines as much by its simplicity as by the combinations offered. And if we can criticize it for the structure of its dungeons, some less beautiful environments and its technique on Switch, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake still succeeds in its bet to bring back to taste a timeless classic in the best possible conditions.

Nov 13, 2024Square Enix has successfully revived Dragon Quest 3 once again with this HD-2D Remake – making it more accessible than ever for newcomers with an array of quality-of-life updates and offering up more than enough new content for veterans to make it worthwhile revisiting. Even if it has aged, this is another great addition to the company’s HD-2D line and well worth playing if you’re a fan of old-school JRPGs.

Nov 13, 2024Dragon Quest is one of my favorite series, and although I enjoyed the Dragon Quest III remake for its details and changes that make the adventure easier to understand, I wouldn’t recommend it to new players. This remake stays so faithful to the original material that it feels like a game lost in time. Despite continuing to play the HD-2D trilogy as a fan, I believe that even Dragon Quest IX for the Nintendo DS surpasses this remake in content and gameplay. Square Enix missed the opportunity to offer a true remake, similar to those of the Final Fantasy franchise.
