CATAN - Console Edition is mighty lovely to look at, a CATAN board carved out of finest materials and then comes to life, and the game itself has lost none of its charm. You can play in any permutation you can think of, with local players, online players and CPU bots all waiting to stiff you on lumber.

Catan- Console Edition does a decent job at adapting the game into a digital format, offering a high-definition sheen to the tabletop classic. Expect a serviceable base game that’s elevated when facing off again humans. Given the lack of any campaign or unlockables, playing against CPU-controlled opponents might give you a case of island fever.

As for my recommendation, if you’re looking for just Catan as a barebones game, go for it. But, if you’re looking for an re-energized version of Catan and you’re looking for any shred of challenge beyond the base game, Catan: Console Version is not for you. I’m going to set sails on the open sea and find another island to embark on for now.

This has to be the worst release of any game I've ever played on Xbox.

Catan is my favourite board game, and I've played it across multiple platforms, classic board game, Android, IoS, Xbox 360 and now Xbox Series X.

The team have attempted to redesign the board with 3D effects and animations. They've given us something which nobody asked for. As a result, it's a visual nightmare. It's impossible to get a decent angle to view the board, as you only get to choose one of three pre-set angles [the 4th angle is unplayable and zoomed right in to an individual resource]. The birds eye is not zoomable for no logical reason [where the other views are], and the colours are dull. Switch views and the colours are overly vibrant. It almost impossible to see where the buildings and roads are, and the result is a mess. There are a few animations, but the one's they've implemented are pointless. You NEED to see clearly what resources are being dealt to the players, and not just a one second icon and they're gone.

Game mechanics are no better. Button mapping has been designed by someone who dislikes gamers. Press green to confirm here, press X to confirm there. Press A to Accept here, Hold down A to accept elsewhere. It's totally inconsistent with almost every single game's button layout over the last 25 years.

Trading is no better. Want to perform a wild trade [I'm offering Wood, what would you like to trade?]. Yeah, that's not a thing here. Being offered something but not sure how you could use it? Yeah, we're not gonna let you see the map board. Don't want to agree to the trade offer? Yeah, we're gonna dump you out of the trade screen. Want to try trading a resource a few times for different types? Yeah, we're gonna make that clunky and cumbersome as possible.

On top of that multiplayer doesn't launch most of the time. If you can get a space in the lobby. A lobby that has a space [as you'll be whisked into full lobbies without any reason].

There's more problems than I've listed here, but if you've ever played and enjoyed Catan, then this game will tarnish those memories. It's a natural disaster of the island of Catan, and patching isn't going to be enough to rectify awful game design and mechanics.

    Avoid.
