There’s a battle at the centre of Bugsnax. In the red corner is a sweet, satisfying puzzle game, where figuring out how to catch a given bugsnax is the challenge. But in the blue corner is the physics-based sandbox where you have to actually capture them, and that game can’t find the fun.

Overall, Bugsnax is likely to be a game that will sit well with the younger audience or casual gamers thanks to its minimalist approach and vibrant and colorful game world. Those wanting a meaningful experience are likely to find the systems in play here too linear and predictable and with no real pull to keep you going, it’ll only remain interesting for as long as you feel entertained by finding new food/creature hybrids. It’s not a bad game, but it’s not one that fills its full potential either.

I normally play competitive FPS games and this was a great game to give me enough enjoyment for wanting to get back into game every time with my child.

Game is too complicated for 3yo for her to play by herself, but it is a safe starting point for FPS gaming!

I got stuck between a ledge and continuously was in a falling animation and couldn't move. and also when doing the charwee side mission where you have to lead the little kiwi fella with your strawbee in a ball when i ran out of chocolate sauce i had to load from a different save state because i couldn't leave the mission. Otherwise the grumpuses are cute, the bugsnax are adorable and addicting to catch, the story is mostly compelling and the gameplay is very easy at first but gets way harder as you go on Expand

Memes aside, this is not a very good game. The best thing I can say about it is that the general idea behind it is good and creative, but it'sMemes aside, this is not a very good game. The best thing I can say about it is that the general idea behind it is good and creative, but it's just not executed very well. The gameplay is overly simplistic and repetitive, which makes the game very boring. On top of that, it doesn't even give you anything nice to look at or explore because the different environments are just soooo basic and barren in their design and cookie-cutter in their theming (I mean seriously? Forest, Desert, Beach, Snowy Mountain? That's the best you could come up with?? Jesus Christ guys you're killin' me) and the graphics are absolute dog**it. For real, if you were to ask me which game looks better, Super Mario Galaxy (which, need I remind everybody, came out in 2007 on an overclocked Gamecube) or Bugsnax, my answer would be pretty clear and it would not be very favourable towards the latter.

The music, while fine at first, gets more annoying the more you listen to it.

The controls can be very clunky, especially when it comes to using tools and aiming.

The aspect of the game fans seem to praise the most is the story and the characters, and while it is probably the best thing about the game, colour me not impressed. I guess maybe if you're 15 years old, these characters, who are so one-dimensional they amount to little more than caricatures, and their personal sob-stories might elicit a deep emotional response from you, but if you've consumed your fair share of good stories with well-written characters in whatever form (games, books, shows, movies), I think it's safe to say Bugsnax won't exactly blow you off your feet. Even the twist at the end is so pathetically lackluster that it failed to have any impact on me whatsoever. Which means I could've stopped playing hours ago, because me knowing that there was a twist at the end was actually the only thing keeping me going.

All in all, for me, this game was nothing more than a waste of time. At least I could play it on Game Pass and didn't have to spend any money on it.
