Army of Ruin is an incredibly pleasant surprise, and along with Dredge is one of the best indie games of the year for me. While it can be argued that this is more like Vampire Survivors in a revamped guise, the visuals do wonders to keep the playability fresh, and with a superb focus on the game mechanics, it offers an adventure that can stand alongside its competitors without shame.

On the face of it, either in form or in content, Army of Ruin is not necessarily original or sexy in, but it does deliver on all its promises. Technically speaking, it has a number of arguments to convince those reluctant to old-school pixel-art and chiptunes from another century and make them try it. Despite some surprising choices and occasional poor balancing, it manages to maintain that dreaded “Come on! Just one more and I will stop!”. To be enjoyed without moderation.

I personally find this game to be more enjoyable than vampire survivors.

    Pros:

    - The progression feels smooth.

    - The controls are easy to learn

    - While clearly inspired by vampire survivors, the weapons and upgrade combinations are fun to experiment with.

    - The maps each have their own mob types and niches which make the respective level more difficult. E.G. the forge level has sentry turrets that shoot at you.

    - The game is much more difficult than Vampire Survivors.

    - There're lots of characters which each have different stats and starting abilities which mixes up your runs.

    Cons:

    - The difficulty can sometimes turn the game into a grind, especially when attempting the purple star levels.

    - Some of the visuals can be hard to see, and you can take damage as a result of this.

    - There's only 5 maps as of writing this review.
