Issues include the following; clipping through geometry and getting stuck, which you will have to abandon your game to fix. Getting placed in jail for hours because you are on pc and others are on xbox or because you use a female character. Reward system at times seems to not give you xp or gold for finishing the mission. Also if you are on a sinking ship you can fall through the ocean or may have issues being able to use the ladders. Servers randomly kick you off for "not being active" even while you are sailing from far island to far island. After the 3/27/2018 patch the game requires to be reinstalled each time you what to play.

Update: Now after patch game wont start at all.

Visually this game should get a 7 out of 10.

This is yet another $ 60 open-world piece of sh*t game with barely anything to do outside of killing the same skeletons on tiny-ass islands or fighting the occasional player online. This is yet another exclusive that fails to make the underpowered xbox one and its cousins fly off the shelves, and further proves that rare is a shadow of its former self.

This is not a game, for everyone. Those claiming it is an 8-10 are clearly self-delusional, trying to shill, or are M$/Rare employees. My guess is that they are hoping that if enough people are fooled into purchasing, then Rare will eventually add enough content to turn this into a compelling multiplayer game. Gambling like that is what Kickstarter is for. Not a *supposedly* AAA game company backed by M$.

While the game looks absolutely gorgeous, it´s so boring. It´s really fun for a few hours, but after that, everything feels much worse than before. The only thing you can really do, is this:

Also, the only things you can get for the coins are cosmetics, which don´t help you in any way. There`s not point to actually engage ships, unless you want to grief and/or make other people mad. You even don´t get anything really special for defeating the kraken or the megalodon. Also, the game is SO overpriced, like really, 60-70$? It should be about 5-20$ max. I can`t get over the fact, that it was in development for 4 years and that´s all they could do. So, yeah, there is not much you can do in this game.
Overall, it´s better than some of Rarewares other projects, but it´s still an absolute disappointment and an awful game.

It will go free to play before long if it wants to be have a chance. Even PvP is lacking (and they respawn you at your ship in the same location so you can be camped) which is sad for a pirate game.

On its face, Sea of Thieves sounds like a lot of fun. Travel the high seas with some friends, engage in naval combat, and plunder to your heart's content. There are moments when this vision acts itself out in fantastic ways, but that's all it is. Just moments.

Rare has created a relatively beautiful world that is devoid of life. The game hinges on player's imagination and creating their own path, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. There have been many games that rely on the player's ability to create their own story.

Yet, with Sea of Thieves, everything feels empty. The only NPCs are quest givers, who are one-dimensional, and poorly crafted skeleton enemies. The enemies lack any creativity or thought. They are merely a stand-in obstacle for players to pass through. The enemies themselves don't amount to a challenge, until Sea of Thieves' clunky, outdated, and overall poor land combat kicks in.

The land combat is not only dull and clunky, but downright bad. It feels more akin to a chore rather than a rewarding challenge as you try to secure your treasure.

For a game touted as an open sandbox, it seems Rare built the sandbox but forgot the sand. There are three factions with three "different" quest types, but each amounts to fetching a chest, skull, or animals and returning them to the quest giver. There are skeleton forts to clear, but when melee combat feels like players are using low-level characters from Morrowind, the excitement from facing down a horde of enemies is completely destroyed.

This leaves just fetch quests. The quests are nothing more than radiant questlines that have popped up in AAA RPGs: Go to x, find Y, return. Of course, as a game centering on pirating, there are treasure maps and riddles to solve, but the enjoyment is once again diluted thanks to the previously mentioned skeletons. Once again, fighting enemies should feeling challenging and rewarding, rather than an annoyance. It seems Rare threw the skeletons in because they knew not having mobs was creating too easy of an experience, so they hastily threw something together and here we are.

In a game where cosmetic customization was touted over a more traditional progression system, cosmetic customization is severely lacking. I was extremely excited when I learned SoT would enter around cosmetics, rather than unlocking higher grade hulls or weapons. It should have been a fresh breath of air. Instead, the customization is barebones and lacking. Currently, there are only three items on ships that players can customize. Players cannot create anything truly unique. In a sandbox game. A sandbox game that touted cosmetic customization as the driving force behind its rewards. Player customization is also severely lacking. Players are limited to just a few clothing and hair options.

Sea of Thieves is everything the gaming community has hated about recent release in one concise package. Lack of customization, bad AI, an empty world, bad combat, and fetch quests.

The promise of "more content to come" cannot be the excuse developers turn to when they push out games that are half-finished, but that is precisely what Rare has done. It is not a promise of "Free DLC," but rather a promise of content that should have been in the game from its awkward and mostly broken launch.

Let's get to the exciting parts, where Sea of Thieves really shows its value. NAVAL COMBAT.

For a game built around PvP, SoT gets it right in isolated instances. Ship-to-ship combat is some of the most fun players can have. There's not much more exciting than sinking or looting an enemy ship, while on the flip side the feeling of loss as you abandon your sinking ship and its content is heavy. This is where SoT shines. The naval combat is fun, especially when your crew is coordinating together as you blast holes in the sides of enemy ships or frantically try to scoop water out of your hold as you try to keep your ship together.

However, finding the instance of ship-to-ship combat is few and far between. Players are more likely to have their ship destroyed while they are turning in their fetch quests, or are on shore looking for treasure, than having their ship sunk as a result of ship-to-ship combat. There is no punishment for griefers who camp outposts (killing players near the quest givers as they try to turn in treasure, sinking empty docked ships) or spawn camp.

In a game that relies so heavily on the sense of accomplishment from PvP, the feeling is completely ruined by players who have decided to take the easy way out.

The game's "Pirate Code" does nothing to deter players who endless grief and troll, for no purpose other than to ruin the experience of other players. Rare is trusting players to self-police and it is already clear, players cannot be counted on to do so.

SoT could have been a fantastic and unique experience, but instead it feels desolate and empty, hampered by bad gameplay.

They should have made the game fun and friendly to everyone instead of making it favor PvP focused players while intentionally disadvantaging PvE focused players. For all the people that are going to tell me this is a PvP game, like I mentioned already, there's a lot of PvE content for a PvP focused game. Arena is PvP, Open is a ganker's paradise. It's anarchy. If you're good at PvP and you have a crew of 4+, then it's open season to roam around and kill people at your leisure, for everyone else it's a nightmare of constantly looking over your shoulder, losing your progress and putting up with griefers. Imagine if GTA had no passive mode and you had to do all of the missions in the public lobby where you could have some one roll up and kill you at any time. A lot of fun for a couple of hours, but that's it. It's just getting repetative and boring, no progression at all. If you don't really care about cosmetics there is nothing to spend the money on. I was hoping to upgrade the ship. It feels like No man sky, but on the sea.

Before we’d even figured out how to sail properly, because of course no tutorials, we were taken out and sent to a black loading screen of death. Upon our spawning to a new ship in a new location...what the should on or horizon... the same crew in the same boat... same result. Repeat the same cylcle of set sail, death, spawn repeat and you have three hours of boring and frustrating game play. No missions complete, no loot, our enemies weren’t even getting anything for it I presume as we hadn’t anything to steal. Nevertheless they kept pursuing and killing us for three hours. Why would you design a game where that is possible Rare? Oh and there’s no character progression beyond the appearance of your character and ship... so glad It came with game pass and I didn’t Have to pay full price.

When you release a game (and it's no longer in Beta), you better release the full game.

If I pay more than $80 for a game, I better be getting the FULL game. This game is worth $20, at best. When you can find more content in an Atari game, the game is not worth +$80. Sea of Thieves has so much potential. Rare was a fine studio that produced many of my favorite games as I was

Sea of Thieves has so much potential. Rare was a fine studio that produced many of my favorite games as I was growing up. After the release of SoT, my faith in Rare has been shaken though.

Remember when you bought a game and you didn't have to download a patch or update because they shipped the ENTIRE game upon release? It's been quite a few years so I can understand if most of you can't remember. Games are evolving and unfortunately Rare isn't evolving with them. I'm actually impressed that Rare was able to sink so many hours into development, push the release date back multiple times, and still manage to promote SoT as a finished product. I mean, come on guys. Day one and the achievements aren't even popping? This is basic stuff. At this rate we'll have the complete game by 2020!

Just be patient everyone, maybe they'll include pirate stuff soon! You know, PIRATE STUFF! Like more than 2 ship types! Or can you imagine more than 3 weapons? Because they can't!

I get that it's an open-world game and it promotes teamwork, which I love, but it's pretty irresponsible to tell me I'm getting an Xbox game when I'm really getting a half-eaten ham sandwich. Except the ham sandwich would have more features and less updates.

One of the best "exclusives" on the Xbox. The game is not worth a cent, but the price tag is from her like in AAA projects. The game is a relentless sequence of rinse and repeat fetch quests, that are boring in every way and lack any real hook or reason to be doing it in the first place. Theres no gear, everything is cosmetic, this effectively means theres no progression or character growth, only arbitrary ranks with the games three factions. There are 3 types of quests, and thats it. Seriously. Go to an island and find treasure, find chickens, or go to an island and kill skeletons.

The combat is inexcusably bad. Theres a single attack button for swords, which have a 3 hit combo. And thats it... For a game in 2018, I have no idea why Rare thought it was ok to do that. Combat is so bad, it shouldn't even be in the game. Skeletons have broken AI and are no challenge. All you have to do is stand on a rock and it breaks the AI and path finding, and they will just stand there while you mash at them.

The game gets boring real quick once you figure out youve seen and done everything the game has to offer after the first hour of gameplay. After you learn the mechanics, theres nothing left but the grind. And my oh my is it a grind, the stuff of legend. Since theres no gear, no levels, no equipment or gadgets, no progression, not even a story line or a plot, theres not much this game has to offer.

A terrible disappointment, through and through. If your set on getting this, DONT BUY IT for $60, thats a total rip off. Get Game Pass by Microsoft, you can play it for 14 days for free (trial.) Overall, the state the game is in is completely inexcusable for a AAA release in 2018, most of the games systems are so archaic its a joke.

Unfortunately a few hours in we started to notice the same thing everyone else has. This game is shallow. After playing it for a little while it feels like someone built the engine, and put those side quests in that people tend to complain about in other games, but forgot to put the main game in. The primary game is fetch quests with a few random events tossed in.

Sea of Thieves has the framework of a game that could be brilliant. I halfway believe maybe it will become that game in a year or so. If so I'd be more than happy to pay for it. But for now, i could not recommend anyone to buy this essentially early access game at full price.

Side note: that water is beautiful. Rare should license out whatever tech they used to make that happen.

But after a little while, you realize, this is it, there isn't anything more in this game.

As game developer I can't help but notice the lack of effort that went into this game. This is what made me come to the conclusion of scam. If you were to make an asset-list from all items, objects and things in the game. and compare this to other similarly priced games. You would start to understand what I mean. This game has about 10% of the effort put into it compared to your average $60 experience ($85 if you buy this in Europe)

There are no cheap cosmetics, a getting hat will take you 5 hours of play (if you don't fool around) and changing your ship color or sail at least two full days of play. (and since barely anyone paints their ship, it's hard to tell them apart) This grind is there for two reasons: To keep you playing for longer, since there is not much else to play towards, and to sell future micro-transactions.

One thing that personally stuck out to me as a sore thumb is the music. I love the concept that they made. There is no soundtrack, but you get two instruments, to play your own music with friends. It's really fun to make your own pirate song. But this hole thing turns into a pain when you realize there is only 4 songs, and not even the most known shanties. (maybe a few more you can discover, but haven't found any of them) After a while this will get to your nerves as they become very repetitive after hours of play. It is just a detail, but it shows the enormous lack of effort that went into this game. With this concept they could easily have made 30+ shanties or more varying instruments like a flute, a drum or a guitar.

My recommendation: don't, DO NOT, buy this game at full price. But surely check it out with the xbox game-pass. It's worth experiencing, but not worth wasting money on. This game is another example of sickness that is spreading in the Industry.

It's fun for a few hours with friends, then there is literally nothing else to do. It currently has around 3-4 hours playable content. The missions are all IDENTICAL. The PvP is non existent and completely pointless. There are so few systems that there's no progression. There's 4 weapons and they are all dull and uninteresting.

There's no tutorial help, I had to google for an hour to figure out that you have to press 'E' to bring up a hidden menu with your quest objectives. The PC version is just a terrible console port. Sure, it works fine but the menus are terrible for mouse/keyboard.

Don't know what else to say, it's 70% of a perfect game, it's just not finished.

Sadly, after only a few hours of gameplay, I have come to the conclusion that it's very boring in a short amount of time, which is not good at all considering how long I waited for this release.

If the constant enemy camping at outposts isn't bad enough, the $60 purchase for a game teeming with near nothing to do but wander around aimlessly for hours is BS, and I'm taking this game back for a refund, or a trade in of some kind. It's just not what I was hoping for, so now I must wait again for another Exclusive to hit my XBox One S that might be worth of the purchase, but we all know this game just is not the winner it was touted as being. It seems that many others feel the same way, and I thought the following comments sum this game up the very best!

"Sea of Thieves has no story, no competitive multiplayer, no true character progression, and only very little in the way of compelling gameplay."

"If this game were a movie, it would be a straight to DVD type of movie".

"This game, I feel will be mostly positive just from people really wanting to have a good Microsoft exclusive, but long story short, this game is as large as an ocean but as deep as a puddle. Not much has changed from the alpha, and it seems like the appropriate price should be 30 dollars, not 60".

That really sums up how I felt about this game, and that is why I'm giving this game a rating of 4 out of 10. This game is the HAZE of this Generation. Hoped to be a great exclusive, okay with some friends for a few hours I suppose, then becomes so boring that you just want to place it back on the shelf and wait for more content to come for the game, (for free), one day to help make this the game it should have been in the first place, (much like No Man's Sky has been).

Why not give the option to hire some AI crews for your ship? The game's only saving grace is its art-like graphics. The sea can look amazing from time to time.

Let us start this review off with a question. Did some of you people that are reviewing this game even play it? How can anyone in their right mind justify giving this game a 7-10 rating?

    Pros
    -beautiful water effects
    -PIRATES
    -unique game environment

    Cons
-4 hours of content tops unless you want to spend the 200+ to reach pirate legend doing the same quests over and over and over again on an endless grind of GO TO POINT A, GO TO POINT B AND GET EXP
-0 progression at all, completing quests does nothing but give you exp and gold that go towards pure cosmetic customization of your ship and pirate
-the Kraken is literally just a tentacle simulator with a low resolution texture slapped on it that is more of an annoyance than an actual threat
-PVP is completely unsatisfactory. It devolves into players waiting on the enemy ship and killing them as they spawn with no chance of fighting back.
-Doing skull forts is impossible most of the time because if you do sink the enemy ships that are incoming 99% of the time, they spawn not even 2 minutes away infinitely with a fresh supply of cannonballs, wooden planks, and healing items. It is an arduous grind of seeing who will tire out first and leave.
-THE PRICE POINT, how can this game demand $60 when games that are worth $15-$30 have had infinitely more content, progression, and customization options on their releases.

Final Thoughts: Simply do not buy this game, it is a cash grab by mircrosoft and rare.ltd to make a quick buck off the hype train this game had going for it.

My opinion this game Sea of thieves, should still be in beta testing. for one they limit the fps xbox users are allowed to achieve, whereas they dont limit pc users fps, Kind of **** Fps is a Big Big BIG **** Deal. probably the standalone reason i dont like this game. other than that the game progresses like **** you dont get to get anything to make your character more effective in any **** aspect what so ever. its all cosmetic. but im sorry Rare thinks Cosmetics are all that matter. not really but this seems to be the case to me. you only have like 2 options to speed up the fps. thats downgrade to a smaller tv resolution and decrease your fov. FYI its not my internet. Day Z. Plays Perfect on a full server. I just wanted to let everybody know this game is pretty much **** right now.
The Best Aspect to the game is being able to steer and control the boat. which they probably stole from another game.
Im sure there going to update it and all that but they boast more than the game is currently worth.
    Thank you for your time.

Pretty game, but has almost nothing to do.
Good for about 3-5 hours of playtime, then you quickly realize how shallow this game is.
DO NOT BUY for the full $60 price-tag, only pick it up if you have the Xbox game pass and can play it for free.
Four years of development for this? What a joke.

Microsoft better start coming out with better exclusives. We all spend a lot for their product and all we are seeing are low quality games. Sea of Thieves is not worth the 65 dollars. The last few games for the system haven't been worth the time and money. I guess we all bought a 500 dollar dust collector!

Or, at least until they come out with a big update which who knows when that will happen. The amount of content present in the game at launch is embarrassingly low. Even the cosmetic items are extremely sparse. There's literally only like 2 pages of items you can get. This is in a game where cosmetics are the only form of progression! I think they focused their efforts on creating a visually stunning world rather than creating actual things to do. So, in conclusion, if they add a BUNCH more content over the next months, it could be awesome. Expand

You get a quest, sail to the island you need to, get chest/kill skeleton, go turn in quest. That's the entire game. Then you can level up and get cosmetics. That is it. This game had unlimited potential and they fulfilled none of it. On top of all of that the game also has troubling bugs and other problems. Latency problems, visual bugs and frame skips are all prevalent. So while there is PVP it gets very frustrating when there is massive lag spikes and frame skips. On top of that, it has an amateur multiplayer interface at best. You have no control over your party. Usually you just have to quit out of your game entirely if you want a friend to join you. And the cross-platform party system through the xbox app on PC has never actually worked without any problems whenever me and my friends have tried. It generally has taken us 20-30 minutes before we can even get into a game together due to the party problems. Also playing solo or even just duos is the hard mode of the game. The minor fun that is to be had from this game seemed to drain away while trying to use match making or sailing in a sloop. This is not a $60 game. It feels like a $20-$30 early access game. I know you can get it through xbox game pass but many people purchased it outright. And if you were wondering you can get a refund from microsoft. Just contact them. You don't have to have a valid reason. They will refund you. So, while this game may come to fruition in a year or so, as it stands now it is an extremely poor game. Expand

I mean ship customization, character customization, ship upgrading, enemy NPC's and enemy ships that weren't player controlled, even just a damn statistic tracker how hard would that have been for such an experienced developer? They didn't even care enough to try and prevent grievers who can spawn camp or sit at an outpost and kill people trying to turn in quests, I mean that's the basic of the basic multiplayer design.

Basically at the end of the day, a mediocre 15 dollar game with a 60 dollar price tag. Get it for free on Game Pass or just pass entirely, they do not deserve your money.

After a couple of hours I had mastered the controls which are just so awkward its unreal and decided to start my first mission, it took about 30 minutes to complete it ( capturing 2 white chickens) that I was amazed my next mission was again to capture this time 1 red chicken. In reality there are only 3 types of mission

    1. Kill a skeleton and take the skull to the outpost
    2. Find a buried chest and take the chest to the outpost
    3. Capture a chicken/s and take them back to outpost

Sea of Thieves Rares first IP after years of doing useless Kinect titles, this was meant to be their baby a pure passion project. However after playing 3 hours of Sea of Thieves I have seen and done everything there is to do, in its current state Sea of Thieves is a paid beta test early access title, its as shallow as a puddle.

I wont lie, graphically Sea of Thieves is amazing. It has some of the best sky boxes and water physics I have probably ever seen. Its co-op is great and really rewards the player for good teamwork but it all ends there. There is little to no progression system, most of us know this already but having no progression is a mistake. It basically just turns it into a massive grind fest, with the player trying to get to Legendary Pirate status which is basically impossible without having to grind out hundreds of hours for pretty much no reason.

The bottom line is, Sea of Thieves is unfinished but it has amazing potential and in years time it will probably be an excellent title. However in its current state it isnt worth your $60 investment. You're better off getting an XBOX gamepass and trying it out before you make the decision to buy, because to be honest right now, RARE doesn't deserve your money...

The idea and concept is amazing, drift on the wide seven seas as you fight other pirates and collect the booty.
But this game is not that. This game is not at all what was promised. The game looks beautiful and you really come to admire the cartoonish yet amazing artstyle. Furthermore the music in the game is amazing and you'll be dancing to the tunes as you set out on your pirate adventures. But the flaws are there.
Their is not progression you only have reputation and becoming a "pirate legend" to look forward to. I feel as the game should have been more mmo-esque. What I would have liked to see is a skill tree, not that would make things unfair but i their has to be some kind of objective. Voyage's get old fast and in the beggining they are a real joy, but quickly feel like a choir with voyage's repeating themselves constantly and to my experience, there are almost no other pirates at sea and it just feels like a PvE game only and not a hybrid ( PvP and PvE ).
The game's asking price is unacceptable regarding the fact that you get so little descent content at launch, the game feels like it's in beta and I do not, at all reccomened buying it for 60 dollars, wait for the price to go down to maybe 15-25 dollars or just get it free for 14 days through xbox game pass!

We have nothing but respect for Rare's vision with Sea of Thieves, but it is a game as likely to chew you up and spit you out, as it is to embrace you. If the wind is in your favour then it can be a delight, but a storm is never far off if you lose momentum. The real test of the quality and efficacy of Rare's plan will be in how it manages to evolve and grow in the weeks and months to come. [Issue#199, p.67]
