Generation Zero offers a vast world to explore but requires you to do it in company for a full experience. Guerilla tactics against robots in a retro-futuristic and scattered environment where the solo player will suffer a severe penalty due to its difficulty. An interesting proposal that we hope will evolve with more and better content.

At the end of the day, I will gladly call ‘Generation Zero’ a good game. It brings new elements and ideas together in a unique setting that hasn’t been seen before. However, the game’s point of difference is also its biggest downfall due to a lack of consistency across all elements of gameplay. Even though Avalanche Studios are constantly working on improving and updating the game, I wouldn’t call it a finished title just yet. Truthfully, I don’t feel that this game is overly suited for the Xbox and would be more enjoyable with a team of 4 people playing on PC. With time, ‘Generation Zero’ could become something incredible, but not just yet.

A little repetitive game that despite its wide map, concludes without interesting challenges.

An interesting concept and setting, held back by its rather lacking execution. [Issue#177, p.78]

It's gorgeous to look at, the soundtrack is infectious and the map is well-designed but that's simply not enough to sustain a large title like this for very long.

The world, concept, and exploration elements are fantastic, beautiful and enticing. But in reality, the game itself, and the gameplay as a whole, are a completely different matter. Hard to use inventory systems, and uninteresting battles with what seems like hundreds of robots appearing out of nowhere, do nothing to entice you in further.

The 80's Swedish killer robots invasion plot feels intriguing, but the whole game feels underdeveloped with bad storytelling and clunky gameplay mechanics. Its vibrant and lush external environments are the only good thing in the game, but it's too little to save it from mediocrity.

If Avalanche can improve the inventory system, fix quest tracking, and get it so the enemies can't cheat through walls and other physical spaces, they'll have repaired most of what ails these dysfunctional machines. Generation Zero isn't the game I wanted it to be today, but in a world where games are alive and changing all the time, I'm hoping the singularity is still near.

Generation Zero sports many of the components that you would expect to see in an open world shooter with online play. Whilst entertaining in short doses, and fairly interesting when it wants to be, the whole ordeal has a tendency of being massively undermined by its poor design choices and its several technical issues. Indeed, it’s a serviceable loot shooter at its core, but the developer really should have held the game to a much higher standard.

Generation Zero is an amalgamation of ideas, some of them pretty decent, but none executed with any great level of confidence. Despite the surprisingly strong atmosphere, gameplay annoyances and serious technical issues prevent it from having a chance to survive.

Generation Zero stumbles on its own concept et never achieves to find balance between shooter and survival. Repetitive and dull, it does have some ideas but they don’t have enough impact to hide all the flaws.

This game has so much potential, but it is so barren I can’t recommend it. The visual and audio aesthetic are right up my alley, but I found myself bored. It harkens back to the No Man’s Sky release: plenty of space to do absolutely nothing. This feels like early access, not a full retail release. Skip until they announce any potential updates that add content to this.

A game of extreme peaks of troughs. At times it’s dreadfully boring; other times it’s wildly exciting. It doesn’t want to make your life easy, but then throws so much resources your way that being downed is trivial. It looks great, but it has a lot of bugs that will only make you able to view the game as ugly. Like Marmite, Generation Zero will dramatically split opinion. But it’s not just a matter of taste – Generation Zero‘s glitches and ill-implemented mechanics are just as much to blame.

While the apocalypse is traditionally painted in varying shades of drab brown and grey, here it's brought to life in lovely bucolic greens and yellows. This pastoral loveliness doesn't disguise the fact that Generation Zero is unremittingly, cripplingly dull, providing protracted periods of walking vast distances with all-too short bouts of gunplay. How the developer behind Just Cause managed to create this vacuous, pointless game is beyond me.

In Generation Zero, I found the combat to have solid depth with the added tactical elements no fight ever feel repetitive. Avalanche StudiosIn Generation Zero, I found the combat to have solid depth with the added tactical elements no fight ever feel repetitive. Avalanche Studios have created some very enjoyable games over the years and I was excited by the announcement of Generation Zero. After many hours with the game it was clear that this isn’t their best game, but there’s still plenty of enjoyment in store along the way. In order to experience the fullest from this title it must be played co-operatively. There’s depth to the combat and the strategy so you really have to think what you have to do next which makes each fight and decision feel important to your gameplay. The game also makes exploring feel important I just wish the quests offered a bit more variety. Technically the game is far from perfect, with persistent bugs and issues present it does impact the overall presentation. Generation Zero isn’t for everybody and the few of the issues the game suffers with be disappointing for some. If you look past this you will find a game that feels rewarding and if you have a couple of friends to play along you will be able to look past the issues in the fray. This is going to be one of those game most people love or hate with little room in the middle. If you have a group to play with you will likely have a positive experience and if you go it solo you may not enjoy your time with the game. A solid attempt but maybe a few patches or tweaks down the road we will see what the game was meant to be from the initial concept. It's close but a little work is still needed in my opinion to get where this game deserves to be. Full Review »

It has a great "classic" game feel to it. Don't play this looking for a stop and pop shooter, non-stop action or endless loot crates for completing simple quests. No, instead instead you have a slower-paced, mysterious adventure through a massive open world (with zero loading screens...zero loading screens)...and it's gorgeous to look at. At times it's very relaxing, other times you realizing you haven't taken a breath in a long time...and then there's the moments where a small dog machine thing came out of nowhere and scares (literally) the crap out of you.

The suspense you feel between encounters is priceless. There are main story quests and side "world quests". They play out great. The quests will be something like "a note said people may be at XXX farm, find it" or "find hunter's house and see if they left a weapon behind". When you complete the quest, you get nothing extra other than some XP and the weapon you found. It's so simplistic and feels refreshing in contrast to a lot of modern games. It is exactly what I wanted.

    Give this game a try!

Don't make excuses for the developers, they know what was launched here.
In the first 12 seconds you know something is very wrong with this game. The first light post has a disastrous issue with how it lights up. Visually it has eyeball killing motion blur you can't turn off. The graphics in this game are not nostalgic, they are unforgivably dated. Some of the graphics are just not finished, fences in mid air with no fence posts... etc. My guess this game was developed years ago (to compete with State Of Decay 1), cancelled, but then fast tracked and launched into a quiet window after Anthem and Fallout 76 performed badly, and ANY game would compete.
The fast tracking means not creating more environmental art, just copy + pasting what already existed well beyond what is acceptible. Anyone saying Crackdown 3 has 360 graphics, you have a genuine "360 graphics" right here.

Was this game developed for PSVR, sure looks like it? With its 4 player co-op, it would go from being very average to quite well recieved on VR.

So, despite this... it's fun. It's scary that this is better than Fallout 76. And priced better, but wait until it's on Gamepass.
Soundtrack is good too. To mitigate the motion blur I found a field of view set to 60 is better.
Day night and weather effects are good.
