Avalanche Studios have created some very enjoyable games over the years and I was excited by the announcement of Generation Zero. After many hours with the game it was clear that this isn’t their best game, but there’s still plenty of enjoyment in store along the way. In order to experience the fullest from this title it must be played co-operatively. There’s depth to the combat and the strategy so you really have to think what you have to do next which makes each fight and decision feel important to your gameplay. The game also makes exploring feel important I just wish the quests offered a bit more variety. Technically the game is far from perfect, with persistent bugs and issues present it does impact the overall presentation. Generation Zero isn’t for everybody and the few of the issues the game suffers with be disappointing for some. If you look past this you will find a game that feels rewarding and if you have a couple of friends to play along you will be able to look past the issues in the fray. This is going to be one of those game most people love or hate with little room in the middle. If you have a group to play with you will likely have a positive experience and if you go it solo you may not enjoy your time with the game. A solid attempt but maybe a few patches or tweaks down the road we will see what the game was meant to be from the initial concept. It's close but a little work is still needed in my opinion to get where this game deserves to be. Expand

I have NO idea why someone would rate this game low. It has a great "classic" game feel to it. No, instead instead you have a slower-paced, mysterious adventure through a massive open world (with zero loading screens...zero loading screens)...and it's gorgeous to look at. At times it's very relaxing, other times you realizing you haven't taken a breath in a long time...and then there's the moments where a small dog machine thing came out of nowhere and scares (literally) the crap out of you.

The suspense you feel between encounters is priceless. There are main story quests and side "world quests". They play out great. The quests will be something like "a note said people may be at XXX farm, find it" or "find hunter's house and see if they left a weapon behind". When you complete the quest, you get nothing extra other than some XP and the weapon you found. It's so simplistic and feels refreshing in contrast to a lot of modern games. It is exactly what I wanted.

    Give this game a try!

Visually it has eyeball killing motion blur you can't turn off. The graphics in this game are not nostalgic, they are unforgivably dated. Some of the graphics are just not finished, fences in mid air with no fence posts... etc. My guess this game was developed years ago (to compete with State Of Decay 1), cancelled, but then fast tracked and launched into a quiet window after Anthem and Fallout 76 performed badly, and ANY game would compete.
The fast tracking means not creating more environmental art, just copy + pasting what already existed well beyond what is acceptible. Anyone saying Crackdown 3 has 360 graphics, you have a genuine "360 graphics" right here.

Was this game developed for PSVR, sure looks like it? With its 4 player co-op, it would go from being very average to quite well recieved on VR.

So, despite this... it's fun. It's scary that this is better than Fallout 76. And priced better, but wait until it's on Gamepass.
Soundtrack is good too. To mitigate the motion blur I found a field of view set to 60 is better.
Day night and weather effects are good.

An unfinished broken mess of a game. Many achievements don't work, plot quests broken if you pick up something before being told about it, enemies frequently just jump through walls to attack you, every building is the same inside, safe-houses are not safe half the time, I've fallen 2 feet to my death and 500ft without a scratch. It's disgraceful that this garbage was released in this state.

Also going through pitch black bunkers with your flashlight and having spider type robots jump at you outta no where can be pretty intense! People are giving reviews within the 1st day of it being out and from what I hear it was glitchy, but I got it a day ago and can’t put it down! It’s challenging, if you mess with the wrong robots or a group of them by yourself, expect to get absolutely destroyed.. you can’t 1 man army the whole game going head on with the enemies like in almost every other game that’s ever been made. Best $45 I ever spent, I even bought it for my friend so we could play together and he loves it too! There’s more content to come as well, if you’ve played Call of the Wild you’ll know how nice beautiful the worlds look on the Apex game engine. Better than FC5 visually hands down, and gameplay wise. Guns have hard recoil like in real life and there’s lots of attachments for the various types and levels of weapons. Easy 10/10 for me, there’s no game breaking bugs that I’ve found in the 15 hrs so far, and there’s can be tons of robots and flares all going off at the same time and I hardly noticed a big frame drop. Better optimized than most Ubisoft games.. Expand

I am playing it on XBox One X. The graphics look great and it really looks like urban Sweden. I also enjoy the combat. It requires some strategy and you can't just go heads on with most machines. Overall, this is an exploration game with some crafting and combat. So, if you like that, you will like Generation Zero. If you are expecting more shooter like combat, you probably won't like it. It should also be noted that the game starts somewhat slow. You need to play it for a while to get to the better stuff. Lots of reviews posted here, seem to be from people who were expecting a shooter game with some crafting. That's certainly not what Generation Zero is. Anyhow, the game is enjoyable for me even though it could have been implemented better. However, it has been sold as a budget title and so I didn't expect a premium game. In some areas it is also apparent that the developers had more great ideas, but probably no budget to implement them. As such, an opportunity has been missed to make this into a great game.
My recommendation: If you like exploring, you should get it. If you aren't sure, what until it is on sale.

Terrible aiming with a controller. PC version is a lot more playable with a mouse. The game is anyway not worth it - very low budget, barely any story content, just very typical houses and bunkers. Main mission like just sending you from one to another locations without explaining any plot.

Between skirmishes this is a relaxing game to play and feels like a holiday simulator. You can travel either on foot or by bicycle and admire the scenery. The destruction mechanics of the robots feels very satisfying and their is plenty of variation in the weaponry. Thinking about your strategy to kill the enemy is well rewarded. The only thing that is lacking is human NPC's for solo players. Even a canine companion would be great. It feels like they spent all their budget on the world. But sill I like the lonely and eerie atmosphere and ambient music. This game grows on you the more you play. Expand

    Strongly underrated.
Love the graphics, the atmosphere, the sound design, the gunfights, the permanent tension, the duration... every aspect of the game actually.
Can't stop playing it. It deserves way more credit than it got until then.
Big thanks to the devs for keeping improving their baby for almost 4 years now!

I'll be honest, this game has way too many things wrong with it ranging from bugs to the gameplay. Whilst I personally love the game, I can see why people would grow agitated the more they play. Yes the bug where the robots just randomly teleport into large spaces (often leading to my death), and certain audio bugs that can only be fixed by a reset of the game, are incredibly annoying. The bugs sometimes do render the game unplayable for me, as well as the difficulty in single player being a major killjoy. And don't get me started on the story line. But away with the negativity. At the end of the day, I will gladly call ‘Generation Zero’ a good game. It brings new elements and ideas together in a unique setting that hasn’t been seen before. However, the game’s point of difference is also its biggest downfall due to a lack of consistency across all elements of gameplay. Even though Avalanche Studios are constantly working on improving and updating the game, I wouldn’t call it a finished title just yet. Truthfully, I don’t feel that this game is overly suited for the Xbox and would be more enjoyable with a team of 4 people playing on PC. With time, ‘Generation Zero’ could become something incredible, but not just yet.
