So most of the bad ratings on here are from people who obviously are trying to boycott the release and are hating on it because either for attention or they actually hate it. I have played 15 hours and for me the game is great, in fact one of the best games this year. So the story is alright and is more of a vehicle that is just in the background and all of the characters and side quests you find are what is really interesting. The characters and dialogue system for me are very good. Some characters and dialogue choices are quite bad but most are actually quite interesting. The world is quite large and the amount of areas to loot is fantastic. Companions are very helpful in battle seems as the difficulty has been amped up. Soundtrack/Score is very good, listening to the radio and looting is so much fun. Base building is meh, could be improved but a nice addition to the game. Graphics are good, they're not realistic but more cartoony and simplistic and the game is much more bright compared to the dull brown fallout 3. Weapon customization is very good. S.P.E.C.I.A.L system is good and can improve lots of abilities that will help you in battle or looting. V.A.T.S are highly improved as instead of stopping time they slow down time and keep the intensity of the battle going. Voice acting is very good for the most part. But then there are the issues I have with the game. Mainly the bugs. Jesus **** christ the bugs are ridiculous. There are so many. Either the game doesn't load properly and it makes me re-load my game or one time I went into an elevator and was in there for 10 minutes so I had to re-load my game. My game crashed once. There are invisible walls and occasional frame drops. If there were no bugs the game would be a 9.5/10 but seems as there are bugs that for me are becoming far and few between now I will have to give the game a 8.5/10 instead. Also all the reviews that came out on release day saying the story is bad and the ending sucks, there is no way you completed the story in one day unless you rushed the game and didn't really play it properly. And to the people hating on the graphics, what about the graphics for Wolfenstein: The New Order? You didn't complain then did you. Anyway Fallout 4 is fantastic and deserves all the critic praise. Just fix the **** bugs bethesda. Expand

It is not Fallout anymore, it is a Fallout-inspired spinoff that plays like Borderlands or Wolfenstein. Most of the major RPG elements that I really loved about the series have been taken out or changed beyond the point of recognition:

    - Dumbed down dialogue
    - No skills
    - No karma

To make matters worse the graphics look like the game was released 5 years ago.

While Fallout 4 strives to match the success of it's predecessor, it falls short in some key categories. It does however redeem itself with innovative new mechanics that redefine how Fallout makes you feel and think while you sink dozens or hundreds of hours into the Wasteland. In short, while it's not perfect it does make for an enjoyable play through for all but the most overzealous fanboys.

    Quickly let's review what worked:

    1. The base building mechanic, while rough compared to other similar mechanics in modern games, is an enjoyable pastime and a needed break from the monotony of wandering the Wasteland.

    2. The map is expansive, while still keeping major cities close enough together to run between them if the player chooses.

    3. The enemies prove to be just as classic as in Fallout 3, with some new twists to keep them more challenging for casual gamers.

    4. The V.A.T.S. system is still wonderful and fun to use.

    5. The power armor and upgrades is a welcome and cool addition to the armor scheme.

    and what didn't work:

    1. The voice acting for every storyline character is flat and uninspired. It is painfully obvious that the voice actors weren't engaged in the story lines and were simply reading from a script that desperately needed some personality.

    2. The main storyline is routine for a Bethesda game (someone takes a loved one and I must find them etc.) and leaves a lot to be desired. The player should want to complete the main story arc, but most will skip it entirely until completely necessary.

    3. Bugs, bugs, and more bugs. Ranging from small annoyances like broken NPC bodies, to game breaking ones where quest givers are missing and players fall through the ground. This iteration of Fallout marks Bethesda yet again as the king of buggy RPGs.

    4. The graphics seem to be only a small step up from the Fallout 3 engine. On new systems and with a six year gap between games, people expect the art to evolve not stagnate. Unfortunately this is becoming a trend with Bethesda releases (see Skyrim, ESO, etc.) and it doesn't keep graphics nuts appeased.

While Fallout 4 is a fun play and the base building is a welcomed addition, Fallout 4 leaves a lot to be desired in the area of story, voice acting, and graphics. This warrants a 7/10 from me as I did enjoy the game, but I always felt it could have been so much more.

    Thanks for reading,

"Just camp behind cover and do whatever you want" is an unfair statement for an open world game. The entire basis of the game is to follow the story line, but to do it your own way, with your own weapons, and by doing basically " Whatever you want". - Gun mechanics are vastly improved

    Cons:
    - Bethesda seems to have completely ignored advancements made by Obsidian in New Vegas
    - Voiced protagonist gets old and limits the ability for you to truly become YOUR character
    - Dialog options are absurdly simple to the point where you have no clue what you'll say (really blows. REALLY)
    - Clothing/armor system could have been better. Why the hell can't I wear a tuxedo under my armor pieces?
    - Bad character writing and development
    - Awkward cutscenes that are meant to be dramatic, but end up being... awkward

Being a longtime fan of Bethesda's work and the Fallout series, this is not exactly what I wanted from Fallout 4. That being said, 24 hours into the game I find myself wanting to keep playing and exploring, and having fun while doing it. Thats the sign of a good game for me. 8/10

I see a lot of malcontent revolved around the game being too similar too Skyrim, Far Cry and to some extent with Minecraft in terms of house building. Yes, the game has definitely been shaped around other game models. But in complete fairness, these game models have proven to be both successful and entertaining. I personally really enjoy the major changes done.

On a negative note however, this game is not finished. There are way too many bugs, glitches and corrupt saves files. It is imperative that a single-player based game distributed by a major company such as Bethesda should be completely functional at its release. Unfinished/Broken games kill immersion. It's really a stab to the heart to invest countless hours within a mission to then discover it was all for nothing because of a corrupted save file, AI glitching/not responding or simply the player getting stuck between two rocks. Every passionate gamer jumped on the hype train for Fallout 4 with great expectations. It's sad to see many people jump of the train due to the beta-nature of this game.

Bethesda. Get your act together. Please.

You play Fallout 4 and graphically you generally feel you could be playing Fallout 3. The controls and combat feel clunky. Inventory is messy - and the crafting tutorial is non existent so when you need to (or quests ask you to) make stuff prepare to be seriously frustrated. 6 hours into the game and I still can't workout how to deconstruct 'junk' into component resources. Frustrating, frustrating, frustrating.

The first cave you explore in Fallout 4 will make Skyrims first cave feel like a gigantic underworld wonderland in comparison. The Fallout 4 maps feel small and cluttered - walk 30 seconds in any direction and you're in another town/village.

fallout ain't a 10 and it aint a 0. Maybe a 5 or 6. But its still 'Fallout' and theres not much out there (maybe Dragon Age 3 or MGS5 in a 3rd person way) offering any serious competition in the openworld 1st person RPG genre.

The hype mill says the xBone will offer PC style Fallout mods, but given how the xBone struggles with Fallout 4s limited graphics already I'll believe that when I see it. In the meantime I'll keep my fingers crossed for a megapatch to address all the obvious and serious concerns people have been raising.

I've spent the past two days alone in my room with my controller in hand playing the crap out of this game, and I'm still only in the beginning of the story! There is so much to look at, to discover, to explore, in this beautiful open world experience. There is a new event around every corner that will distract you from the mission you're trying to accomplish. For example, in one mission, I have to clear our a military base of ghouls. When I enter the building, I find this brotherhood of steel chick, dead in the corner with a holo tape recording of her mission. A new quest pops up: investigate her objective. Now I have to decide to carry out my mission or give in to curiosity.
This 'choice' is what really makes this game work for me. I hate when games are linear, I like thinking for myself. Fallout has always been great at giving us free will instead of a 'kill everything you see and follow the objective.' If you like intellectual game play rather than robotic, you will love this game.

    Overview
    Game play:
Deep. Immersive. Shooting is finally enjoyable in fallout. Almost every aspect of the game-play is great.
    Story:
Slow start, but it picks up after a while. It's a really deep and emotional experience.
    Graphics:
If you don't like F4's graphics, you need glasses. They look great, a 400% improvement from previous fallout games. I call it 'Cartoon Realism,' and it's a great style for the fallout mood. I really appreciate that they showed the real game in the trailers instead of an HD parody. I love the graphics, and I prefer them to many of the super graphics that other games are advertising.
    Score:
*Clap clap clap* The memories. Great soundtrack.
    Voice acting:
Great acting, but the voice doesn't always match up with the video. For the voice acted protagonist, I absolutely adore having a voice for one. It makes me feel like a part of the world rather than a perception of it.
    Bugs:
There are bugs, but it's much more polished than fallout 3. Of course such an open game, with limitless freedom, is going to have bugs.
    Overview:
The best game out there as of right now. If you don't have this game, pick it up, whether you're a fallout fan or not. It's worth every penny.

    Addressing the negative reviews:
I don't know why the reviews for this game are so harsh. My prediction is that people are just so brainwashed with linear story and superb graphics, and when they play fallout, the freedom and the change in what they're seeing scares them. It could also be that people are so used to being let down by AAA game companies, that they've been conditioned to look for the negative on everything, especially something innovative that isn't the 'Good old days.' It could also be that people are being childish, and simply hating on the game. That would explain all the 0s.
Whatever the reason may be, these reviews should be disregarded. We should save negativity for what is actually bad, not for what's great and innovative. If the majority give all games, even good ones, bad reviews, than game companies won't take our input seriously. This could also frighten them from change, and for the case of half life three, could cause games to not be made at all.
In my opinion, this is the best game of the year. Keep it up, Bethesda.

The gunplay and actual gameplay beyond dialogue and decision-branching don’t fare much better. This game is too simplified in every way right down to leveling-up and the lack of a proper RPG difficulty curve (ie. start weak, play a lot, progressively get better). The game's internal logic is highly inconsistent and the world is most certainly not immersive as a result.

Yes, they added a boring base design minigame. Other games do that far better. Okay, weapon and gear modification. Too bad all the weapon designs are awful and Bethesda thinks that adding adjectives and attachments to a limited selection of guns means variety. Power Armor is ruined if you like wearing it a lot, and made a major point of the game even to people like me who never liked using it.

They actually took away features. No karma system. No weapon/gear condition. Do you remember complaining about either of these things? Yeah, Bethesda had trouble getting the whole "moral grey area" thing in Fallout 3, but removing the concept entirely from 3D Fallout? SPECIAL and perks are completely ruined, they just act as FPS style buffs rather than anything that would really effect your play style. Skills don't even exist anymore... Is any of this at all excusable because of better shooting mechanics and a kinda cool layered armor system?

The setting's awful. Boston was probably always gonna be pretty boring compared to most major American cities (we honestly could've had a Fallout in the Deep South instead of Fallout 3.5 minus any recognizable landmarks...), but the map is tiny and the world is boring. I walked to Diamond city without anything attacking me. Even worse, I walked to Diamond city without feeling compelled to explore or investigate a single damn thing in this open world. Bethesda uses some cartoonish character designs/animations and colors that really stand out as absolutely terrible in a series that's supposed to look gritty and talk clever.

Dialogue's ruined. The wheel doesn't even accurately tell me what my character will say. You only ever have four options, which are almost always "nice response", "mean response", "sarcastic", or "question/speech check/lie". It's an absolute joke to call a game this simplified a real RPG. Oh, and Bethesda created a character with a backstory, set motivations, and A SINGLE VOICE ACTOR (per sex). I can't roleplay in this roleplaying game...

If I still haven't convinced you not to play this game (please pirate it if you have to), consider how terribly it's written. Yes, all of dialogue is contrived and boring, but the train doesn't stop there! So the main plot, with the son and spouse. Cool, I'm glad the character that Bethesda created for me cares about them, but why should I? The prewar sequence is kinda cool in a lot of ways, but it's so short and contains nothing that would make me remotely attached to the would be female player character or an extremely bad looking baby that you literally never see do anything but scream and get kidnapped. God damn, I even care more about James from FO3... Oh yeah, Bethesda started working on the concepts for the game about the father from the vault finding his son in the wasteland right after we finished the game about the son from the vault finding his father in the wasteland. Bravo, it's like poetry. I guess Bethesda really wants to waste a postapocalyptic setting on personal family stories instead of, you know, significant geopolitical developments influenced by you and your companions a la 1, 2, and New Vegas... Yet, the pacing is the most glaringly obvious problem. Within the first hour, you have power armor, a companion, a minigun (THAT DOESN'T DETERIORATE), and a few hundred caps if you aren't stupid. That "immersive" voiced player character has a pretty interesting nonexistant reaction to being thrown into the apocalypse and having to fight a ton of radioactive monsters only a few hours after he woke up and got ready. This isn't Fallout. This isn't even a good game. For anything else, a 6/10 at best. For a AAA title from one of my favorite series that was hyped up to be a real game changer, a 0 is the closest justice (next to a refund) that is deserved.

If you love being a psychopathic, kleptomaniac explorer with a penchant for interior design and a fondness for dogs then this is everything you could want and more. The graphics are not up to the standard of the likes of witcher 3, yet this is offset by the ability to interact with nearly everything in the game. You can scrap down, move, kill, destroy, build, paint and tinker with so much it is nearly overwhelming and it really encourages you to experiment. The satisfaction of clearing your homestead, fortifying it and arming the place to the teeth is akin to animal crossing meets far cry with power armour. You are encouraged not just to have a life within the game, but to build one you care about and defend to the death. The story and voice acting range from functional to flawed to down right funny. Sure no one has threatened to rip off my melon and **** down my neck but a few bad mouthed raiders have given me some reasonable lip. I don't really mind that though because I'm too busy systematically raiding every building, cave and base I can find, locating surprises you could easily miss. I like that because if I play again, as with FO3 I know I'll find something cool I missed the first time around. Don't listen to the haters, they're just bitter they are nearly a decade older than when FO3 came out and don't have the time, patience or creativity anymore that the game requires you to Invest to reap its richest rewards. I'm literally just getting started and foresee many hundreds of hours of joyful wasteland exploits in the months to come. One point off for the graphics and recycled songs, 9 points on for making me a truly happy gamer. Expand

RPG for casual gamers only. No degradation on items, just a really long hoarding game with Skyrim like fighting. This is not an RPG and therefore this is not Fallout. It's everything you want out of a modern Fallout game with so much scope. There's nothing like just picking a direction going out there and seeing what happens. A great adventure game.

Taken at face value, it's still one of the best games of the year, but when compared to New Vegas we can feel the ever on-ward march of the dumbing down in the industry. Repair mechanics are gone, traits, skills. This is less RPG and more action adventure than I would have liked. I hope Bethesda learns from Resident Evil here as they are making the same mistake. Resident Evil was a survival horror, and slowly over time it turned into an Action Adventure and has been nailed with crappy reviews and general dislike ever since. Fallout has been making the same march. It's not good and a little sad.

The settlement builder feature is an awesome addition, but like a lot of new features it needs some work as it doesn't function all that well. Parts are clunky and don't work as well as they should. The story feels dated. Fallout 3 you were a Son searching for his father, here you are a father searching for his son. Woo hoo. Major creative liberties taken there Bethesda. Awesome job. I guess next time we'll be a Spouse searching for a spouse, or a sibling searching for a sibling. New Vegas was far superior in story, and honestly I had a lot more fun playing that one than this one. Let's hope Obsidian develops a follow up to New Vegas.

    Fallout is everything I expected.
As a Fallout lover, it delivers everything I would want.
I appreciate the streamlined level up system, I find the settlement development intriguing, if a little clunky.
    And sky ships!

The game is horrible compared to Fallout 3, almost all the fun features have been removed or dumbed down.
All there is a left is a boring, empty world with nothing meaningful to do. And to make matters worse it doesn't even work most of the time: the technical glitches and freezes make the game unplayable.

    Just horrible Bethesda, just horrible.

Sometimes beautiful, a bit broken, and really quite brilliant in many places, forgiving fans will adore Fallout 4. [Christmas 2015, p.60]
  3. More Fallout 3.9 than 4, but still absolutely essential. Skyrim 2 has a hard act to follow. [Jan 2016, p.67]
