Compared to previous Fallout games (including New Vegas) there is nothing that hooks you in and makes you want to play for hours on end. I have already run into glitches that are very similar to previous Bethesda games so that only takes off maybe one point for me. The bad rating comes from the fact that there is really nothing that is motivating me to progress through the actual story. I feel like wandering around and hope I find something that will temporarily spikes my interest.

This is no longer an immersive post-apocalyptic roleplaying game with a coherent overworld, interesting stories/people/factions and different choices to make which really matter and change the outcome of your surroundings.

It's just a simple Exploration FPS with a Hub-like overworld, a lot of fetch quests à la "Go there, kill that, take this, bring back", mostly shoot and loot purpose-built locations and a lot of uninteresting characters. If they aren't simply generic "Settlers" etc. you won't be even alble to kill them. Nearly everyone of them is invincible and there's no more Karma or Faction system.

You're just playing the concerned father through all of this game, without the ability to be someone else or even just evil. There are no more multiple ways of solving a situation and he Dialogue wheel mostly consists of this:

    Yes
No (Forced to still do it)
    Sarcastic (Yes)
Huh? (Just an explanation which will lead back to the same options)

And occasionally a Speech check, but no more Barter/Intimidate/Medic etc. options.

This is not Fallout anymore. :/

It does continue on the Fallout series but it has been a major step back. Fallout: New Vegas has been the best Fallout game in my opinion. Both Fallout 3 and NV had excellent dialog, you decisions in quests had an effect on game, and there was it required some thought when encountering bad guys.

In Fallout 4, you feel you have no control over the dialog and it is very simplified and limited. Feels like the creators force you to go down a certain road. Of coarse you can speed down it with good charisma, but I cannot take alternate paths.

Ammo and caps are not hard to get in this game. In all the previous you never wanted to waste ammo. It was hard to get in the post apocalyptic future. In 4, I have more than enough. Caps are not hard either, I can easily accumulate several thousand caps.

The weapons in 4 are not exciting at all. I do like the weapon modding system, however, there is such a small variety of weapons and no variation in ammo. I loved the feel of finally finding a good weapon.

The same goes with armor as weapons.

I do not like how power armor is achieved in the first few hours of the game. Power armor in all of the previous were hard to find and almost an end game item. I have been playing for 10 hours and have found 4 suits of power armor and enough energy cells to keep it powered for a while.

Although I do like how power armor works, it actually shows it power and bulkiness. But I feel its achieved too early in the game and should be a more unique item. You can however customize it and get unique parts for it to improve it.

Overall the creators tried to enhance the game, but I feel it change the dynamics and it feels more of a shooter, kind of like the game 'Rage' if you have ever played it. I can't say it's a bad game, but compared to the other games in the series it is a step back and horrible.

You play Fallout 4 and graphically you generally feel you could be playing Fallout 3. The controls and combat feel clunky. Inventory is messy - and the crafting tutorial is non existent so when you need to (or quests ask you to) make stuff prepare to be seriously frustrated. 6 hours into the game and I still can't workout how to deconstruct 'junk' into component resources. Frustrating, frustrating, frustrating.

The first cave you explore in Fallout 4 will make Skyrims first cave feel like a gigantic underworld wonderland in comparison. The Fallout 4 maps feel small and cluttered - walk 30 seconds in any direction and you're in another town/village.

fallout ain't a 10 and it aint a 0. Maybe a 5 or 6. But its still 'Fallout' and theres not much out there (maybe Dragon Age 3 or MGS5 in a 3rd person way) offering any serious competition in the openworld 1st person RPG genre.

The hype mill says the xBone will offer PC style Fallout mods, but given how the xBone struggles with Fallout 4s limited graphics already I'll believe that when I see it. In the meantime I'll keep my fingers crossed for a megapatch to address all the obvious and serious concerns people have been raising.

Reading the reviews on here, I see a great deal of zeros and tens. I can assure you this game is not a zero, and it certainly isn't perfect. Let's go over the good and bad of this game.

First, let me list some of the good things in this game. Right off the bat, you are treated to some entertaining videos while the game installs. This, along with the poster that comes with the game, is a fantastic way to kill time during install. Once the game starts, you’ll note that the gameplay overall has been greatly improved. While roaming the wastes and killing, looting has been made easier and faster (although inventory remains a pain) and V.A.T.S has been balanced for a better challenge (in Fallout 4, time does not freeze while aiming in VATS). The dialogue system borrows from the effective Skyrim model; but sadly all dialogue options usually offer little variety. I did admire the voice acting from our main created character, which is new for Bethesda RPG's. For me, it made the game much more engrossing. Surprisingly, though, the other voice actors are rather bland. The facial animations in this game are also incredible, and really show what the Xbox one can be capable of.

Another great addition to this game is the town building system. You can now enter 'builder mode' at certain designated places, and start to build your own house and community. This game mode is insanely fun, and also finally puts to use all those junk items you may find in the wasteland. Anything you find can be turned into building materials or used for decoration in your house. So addicting!

Now, for the bad things that hold the game back. Just like most Bethesda games at release, Fallout 4 was also very buggy. In addition to small glitches, the game has also crashed before on my Xbox One. In the 45 hours I have played the game, it has crashed twice, and three of my save files have been inexplicably corrupted upon return. I found these bugs and crashes unacceptable for veterans such as Bethesda. The frame rate was another inexcusable blunder as well, as at times it can dip to almost unplayable rates while in a large city skirmish. Oh, and get used to being sent out to a lot of the same places to fight the same enemies while helping the Minutemen or Brotherhood; these were some of the most repetitive and uninventive quests I’ve played in a Bethesda game. They were more like MMO ‘fetch’ quests; somehow even worse than the lame Skyrim civil war whose missions were essentially the same no matter which faction you allied with.

Another bad part of the game is it's storyline. I have to admit, this is the least amount of effort ever put into the story of a Bethesda RPG. Remember Fallout 3? We spent time with the main characters from birth until adult age. That is crazy good character development, and commitment to telling a good story. Although I have not yet finished the game, this story gets off to a rather quick start, and thrusts you right into the wastes before you know it; not allowing any characters to be properly flushed out and established. This was a mistake on Bethesda’s part. Also, what’s with the ‘awkward’ Diamond city radio DJ? Is he supposed to be funny…?

All in all, even with the issues, I keep the rating high, because I’ve enjoyed playing it so much, and you will get many many hours out of this game. With the number of characters you can make, along with build mode and quests, you won’t be bored. As always, I’m sure Bethesda will patch almost all of these glitches very soon and the game will vastly improve. In my opinion, this is the game of the year by far. In these dark times of gaming, Fallout 4 is a shining light of hope in the wasteland of horrible games and micro transactions.

Well, It could have been 9 or even 10, but there are some stuff you just can't ignore that drops the score.
Massive Open World with tons of stuff to do: exploration - at first it fells overwhelming, the map is very large with lots of location to visit. each indoor location is huge by itslef with multiple rooms and floors and sometimes only one side mission location can keep you busy for couple of hours.
Combat - it is OK could be a lot better but it is OK. the weapons feel overall good and uniqe, 1st person3d person are both fine, AI is unsurprisingly dumb and embarrassing which brings me to the challenge aspect: the only difference between the games difficulty levels are the enemy's HP, so essentially the hardest difficulty will bring same dumb enemies only with ridiculous amount of HP and that's it. stealth is unbalanced in way that sometimes you stand right in front of enemy and the idiot cant see you and other times moving slightly fast across the other side of the room will instantly trigger the enemy.
build your own settlements, basically build you own town and manage the resources and settlers, what food to grow which areas to build defenses which point to assign settlers to defend and more - not a big fun of those but still found myself not once building an elaborate settlement which took sometimes a few days to finish. no doubt there is tons o fun to have there.
customize Weapons and Items - each weapon and item in the game is customizable, some more than others but the variety is large and can fit many different playing styles. the only main problem with gameplay wise is the lack of diversion in mission design, a lot of them feel the same not to mention the majority of the side missions which are basically the exact same mission only in different location. never the less, it never gets old shooting an upgraded Rail-Gun and watching your enemies heads explode in slow motion with blue and green glowing fireworks coming out from the remains :D :D :D

    B. Graphics: 7
    The Bad:
there are numerous graphic bugs and glitches which makes the game look goofy at times and kill the immersion. enemy units and NPC units lack of variation and they all look the same with colorsize difference or clothing difference for the NPC's, no creative work what so ever in that section. other than that, generally the graphics doesn't fells that it belongs to a 2015 AAA Game.
    The Good:
the open world looks and feels very atmospheric and immersive with each different area having a different vibe and feel to it. weapons have a variety with unique and somewhat creative design for each one and overall are looking not bad, dynamic weather is pretty good, player customization is huge and you can basically create anyone, really!

    C. Audio: 9
Job Well Done Here! the soundtrack is very unique and fits perfectly to the game which contributes greatly to the atmosphere of the games world and never fails to be exciting. Voice acting is not bad, although the female protagonist "acting" is far better than the male one and there could be a bigger variety of choices for what to say during dialogs. the radio is Amazing, the talk show is funny and the classic 50's-60's song selection is awesome and will get stuck in your head long after you finished playing.

    D. Story - 7
The story is good for the most part, although the huge open world and a very long To Do list sometimes can distract you and make you forget about the plot but never the less it is good and interesting overall.

    E. Content Vs. Value: 9
well to put it short: this game can keep you busy for easy 100 hours and that's without even doing the settlement building stuff. also the option to add mods can basically make this game a never ending experience.

    F. Controls and Mechanics: 7
the controls are good for the most part. the layout is pretty good and the controls are responsive, the problem is in what its lacking: no cover system. no climbing system whatsoever, if you can't jump there you can't get there which is a big shame because there is a good sniper gameplay to have here.

    G. Stability and Performance: 1 Horrible and unacceptable
Well, here is where everything good about this game goes out of the windows and makes it one of the worst gaming experiences I have ever had.
where to begin? the most annoying part is that surprise surprise it crashes a lot, A LOT ! sometimes up to 6-8 times in a couple of hours sitting, so have fun saving your game every 5 minutes because you never know when its going to crash. then there are the constant fps drops, stuttering, screen freezes for 2 seconds, videoaudio goes out of sync. settlement build is constricted to small ones only every thing beyond will result in single digit FPS. loading times are the worst possible every entranceexit to indoor location will have couple of minutes worth loading screens same for loading games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love everything about Fallout 4, but I don’t like the game.

So Fallout 4 is a tricky one for me. I bought into the hype. I lurk the sub-reddit with all its crazy bug gifs. I get jealous reading about amazing sub-quests that lead you down a deeper and deeper rabbit hole. But 20 hours in, something has still not clicked. It might be the environment as I’ve never been a big fan of post-apocalyptic worlds. It might be the Xbox One version with its poor load times, or even the steep learning curve at the start of the game that has caused me numerous frustrating reloads.

Whatever it is, I just can’t seem to push past it. Whilst the storyline is basic in the best of ways, that of a parent looking for their missing son, the delivery seems heavy handed and often jars against the expectation of what you imagine you would do in that situation. As an example - a few hours after leaving the vault and learning your fate in this new alien world, you become the general of a once legendary group of rebels. I understand Bethesda want to empower the player, but something about this feels oddly over-important so early on and it really detracts from the simple drama of finding your missing son.

It’s not all bad. The graphics, whilst already feeling dated in 2016, do enough to immerse and I think there has not been enough mention online about the extraordinary sound design and soundtrack. The timesink of crafting upgrades for weapons, armour, houses, settlements and power armour is very much welcome in a game that begs to be binged. And even though the VATS system seems somewhat game breaking, the combat is exhilarating from the start.

Overall, I’m left feeling like I’ve missed out on something key to Fallout 4 which is holding me back. I get excited when I read a story about a hidden quest, a powerful weapon or a twist in the storyline - but unfortunately the experience for me doesn’t feel worth my few hours of after work gaming time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So here we are, another Fallout. It came suprisingly suddenly, which was a positive thing. I still have to open up about the main problem here. I have really tried to understand Bethesda. Really. Makin' games, same system, same way, different setting, all that jazz... But i just can't understand them. You have an amazing series in your hands, like Fallout, a possibility to continue the greatness Black Isle Studios made in the nineties (nope, no nostalgia there, just stating facts), and you make Fallout in to a shooter. Every bit of budget focused on murdering people. And also some talk around the plot that a few interns have come up with. And also the military vibe going around all the time. That is not Fallout, that is just the war-never-changes -part.

I know, pretty aggressive to say all that. All the plotlines have not yet been explored, so i don't know everything the game has to offer. But under all the superficial collecting and tinkering and character progression, everythings is there to improve killing folks. Everything. In the Fallout games before 3 you actually had to kill many monsters in the wasteland of course, but now there are ONLY places to shoot things up. If i buy a game that is advertised as a Post-Nuclear Role-Playing game, i expect to actually have quests and characters that don't involve murdering a legion of people and/or former people. Don't get me wrong, i love my shooters! I really do, i spent my young days shooting all kinds of people in Medal of Honor and Call of Duty games. Also Halo and Unreal were awesome.

Still, Fallout was my main game i always returned to. Why? Because i loved the weirdness, the strangeness of the wasteland, the characters and the mystery of it all. New Vegas brought it back a little, and thanks to Obsidian Entertainment for that. But now we have Fallout 4 to play. Settlements to build with weak tools and systems and defend from lazy attacks and at no consequences. So a strategy/shooter? The settlement building has a lot of potential, i have to admit that. I also find that i do not give a rats ass about the actual settlements, and also about almost about any of the characters. Who actually cares about Preston Garvey? Seriously? One of the universes lamest characters. And the Institute? And actually every faction? I'll just say that i guess i should really take up on writing storylines and brancing questlines. It doesn't seem to be that hard.

Also i do know that shooters before Fallout 4 have had an advanced system of reactions to being shot. Limbs, bullet holes, melee hits. So there's really nothing new there? Just the things that shoud've been in the games before (ghouls and robots losing limbs, but not dying). It is very weird in this day and age to watch limbs stupidly be blown away by pistol fire. Realism is a tricky thing for a game, but the tools are there, developers, use them.

Is the best way to mankinds survival actually to murder everyone? Really? Blowing a big hole in the middle of Boston? And with the actual massive amount of raiders in the game, and also supermutants and ghouls... i do believe that humans would not have survived. The numbers are actually overwhelming. But then there's this one guy from times before who can do it all.

Why can i not finnish the game with Raiders? Why can't you become a supermutant?

Any people with half a brain can understand that developers can and should make better games, and not just games that sell good, and ride the fame with big names like Fallout. Even with all the good parts, this game is a sad example of selling out. Moderately selling out. And it is a sad thing.

Also i hate Bethesda for making HAROLD A COMPLETE TREE IN THE FRIGGIN CAPITAL WASTELAND. COME ON! Should've saved that one for Obsidian.

But... you know... otherwise it's an okay game, played it a lot and can't wait what dlc they come up with for me to criticize.

Sadly all the good work above is undermined by the decision to go with a fully voiced protagonist which has led to a limitation in outcomes which means whilst there are different speech options they all wind up with basically the same result, a fundamental part of titles like fallout and the elder scrolls game is choice, or the illusion of choice and dare I say it the ability to role play which again is inhibited by the voiced player character, unfortunately for Bethesda the voiced player character has hurt their game and the high point of the modern fallout series remains New Vegas.

Fallout 4 is worth a purchase and at least a single play through, the setting is fun and following recent patches the game is much more stable, if you go into this game knowing that this isn't another skyrim where you are going to immerse yourself in the game for thousands of hours you will not be disappointed, go into this game thinking the opposite and you will be.

In summary a solid game that is overshadowed by the quality of previous titles in the franchise.

When I first played I thought this was an unbelivable game then after 25 hours when I decided to go threw the main mission I realised ''well that's it'' I completed all the side quests in 25 hours, except for the minor ones. I spent hundred of hours playing Skyrim and this is only a mere 30 hours to complete pretty much everything.

The perk system is just boring. It seems you have a lot to unlock until you realise 75% of the perks are pointless.

Buy it under 40$ it is still a pretty good 25 hours of play time which is better than a lot of games.

The story was promising enough that I felt compelled to play it. However, the sidequests were painfully repetitive and boring. The gameplay for combat gets pretty dull too as your "moves" are limited, relying heavily on VATS. I invested over 100 hrs of gameplay and slowly followed along the main story. Oh and building things for your settlement was annoying, and discourages players from building things properly as it takes a lot of time. I must admit, there were some choices that really test your integrity as a person. However having said that, in order to achieve the best bang for the buck in terms of experience and slices of more story content, you need to be shrewd and not act as high and mighty. I would have rated this game a 8 except the ending kinda suck. I get the message but I didn't get the any satisfaction. I wasn't like "what, that's it?". Was more of "what, that's the ending? Ok where's the real ending". Ok I said some not so good stuff about the game. Here are a few good points for it: choices of how you want this story to end. Despite of a lot of complaints with dialogues and voice overs, I found them decent. Good arsenal of weapons you can wield, depending on your preference. Good perks selection, all are useful and makes it really hard to choose which one to take and improve on. Pretty good score (sound/music). In my opinion, it is worth playing at a cost of $50, not $80 -- and Witcher 3 kicks Fallout 4's ass in most aspects. Expand

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are two of my all time favorite games. So, like most people, I was extremely hyped for Fallout 4. I think it is always good to start out with good news and improvements so here we go

    The Good:

Graphics: While the facial animations and character movements are still mediocre to say the least, the environment of Fallout 4 is beautiful. The changes in weather, The skyscrapers of downtown Boston, and the barren wastelands of places like the Glowing Sea all look great. The map is large and filled with locations to explore.

Combat: The combat in Fallout defiantly improves on Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I find myself now doing more hip firing than using V.A.T.S. in most situations. Shooting any weapon feels a lot smoother now and the upgraded V.A.T.S. is a nice touch.

Settlements: The addition of settlements is defiantly something I was looking forward too. While clumsy at times, it still manages to bring a more interactive and addicting way of building your own homes around the wasteland. You can build your own major town and invite settlers to live with you.

    The Disappointing:

As a pretty hardcore fan of fallout 3 and new vegas, I never would of thought I would be giving fallout 4 a 7/10. Sadly, there is a good bit that was disappointing as a long time fan.

Perk and Skill System: This started off very confusing and overwhelming. The fact that everything was mixed together did not appeal to me at all.

Main Story and Side Quests: No spoilers, but the main quest of Fallout 4 seemed very dull and quick. I loved how it started off, but after the "major twist", things started feeling rushed. Before you know, the game is over and the ending was bland. Main stories have never been Bethesda's strong suit, but I expected more out of a game this long coming. While there is a fairly large amount of side quests, most of them feel empty and not as in depth as the previous Fallouts. Most never have any large effect on the game or story, and over very quickly.

Fallout 4 is still very much a great RPG and I am still enjoying my time playing it. Honestly, I did expect a lot more from it, based on the time it took to develop and the high expectations. I feel like Bethesda missed out on a lot of key things that made Fallout 3 and New Vegas so good.

This is my first Fallout game, and i say it was an amazing experience. The game play felt right, i had a lot of playing it. The only thing that bother me was the story line, it was really bad, and felt forced, feels missing, like they will probably shove it all into DLC, but in my book that an 'F'. I still has fun though, and definitely recommend playing it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout 4 is a game that fans of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas will find overly simplistic and dulled down compared to its predecessors. however as a standalone game it is a perfect blend of tight shooting mechanics and simple to understand RPG mechanics, which allows the player to focus more on the story and their interactions with other characters, rather than worrying about skills and such. The story in the game is average, it's main feature is morality regarding AI, but it is ruined by the fact that 3 endings are just copy-pasted with different dialogue and the other one is lazy at best.

To get full enjoyment, don't think of it like Fallout 3/New Vegas and focus on side quests.

    The Pros

1- The graphics and animations are more detailed and realistic. The framerate is higher and the definition better. It was based on the Skyrim engine -- and it shows.

2- The game is less glitchy than previous entries and operates a lot smoother. There are fewer load screens, for example.

3- The combat system is much improved thanks to the new slo-mo version of VATS, the additions of a sprint function, a gun melee option and a grenade hotkey.

4- The expanded weapon crafting system is fun. Gradually improving your arsenal and customizing it to your preferences by rebuilding them is nifty innovation. Being able to name weapons is a nice add-on.

5- The player can now romance companions. It is awfully chaste, but you can romance multiple ones including same-sex characters.

    Cons

1- The graphics, while better, lack the proper "feel." The game resembles Skyrim more than it does a post-apocalyptic wasteland. It just isn't stark & desolate enough.

2- The game is less immersive. The new stats and leveling up systems give the player fewer ways to customize their character. The removal of the karma system means player actions have less weight. Giving the player character one bland, generic voice no matter what race you choose for them doesn't help either. The player also doesn't know what exactly their character will say when they choose dialogue options, resulting in unintentional results at times.

3- The storyline is problematic. Unlike in the earlier games the player character starts off with an extremely urgent goal, namely finding their kidnapped newborn child. This runs counter to the inevitable sidequest sidetracking the game imposes, inadvertently making the player feel like a **** negligent parent every time they return to the main quest.

4- The removal of weapons & (most) armor degradation is a mistake. It may have clashed with the new, expanded crafting system, but taking it out removes one of the key challenges to playing the game and one of its most immersive elements. The fact that the designers did include it for power armor only highlights the issue.

5- Many of the weapons look ugly. The designs are presumably intentionally meant to look clunky and purely functional as opposed to sleek and cool, but why is there nothing like a simple AR-15 or pump-action 12 gauge shotgun in the game?

6- The new Pip-Boy system is actually less user-friendly. The layout is more cluttered and less intuitive, making it harder to navigate.

7- Boston just doesn't provide as interesting of a setting as DC or Las Vegas. DC emphasized the game's politics, history and satire as well as providing some stunningly iconic visuals. Las Vegas allowed for a riot of different themes -- the wild west, rat pack-era Vegas, the Mafia and Elvis. Boston has baseball, the colonial-era history and ... that is pretty much it.

It is a bad RPG and a misdirected installment in the franchise. Still, many Bethesda fans or just players who enjoy exploring unfamiliar worlds will be satisfied with it, as it has one of the richest, most detailed game worlds ever created. Lore is presented to the player in different ways around every corner of the game world. Together with the masterfully crafted sound design it will help immerse even newcomers in the interesting world of Fallout. The game also has a lot to offer to gun nuts as the game features improved shooting and an expansive crafting system that takes resources from the clutter in the open world.

However, Fallout 4 is a big departure from the franchise in terms of its way of storytelling and RPG mechanics, which will most likely disappoint long-time fans of the franchise. It is apparent that BGS have taken inspiration from other popular games. It seems to me that in the beginning of the development cycle of the game, the developers asked the question “can we” too many times and didn’t ask the question “should we” enough. As a result the narrative of the game suffers, as the actions of the player often contradict with or completely undermine the meaning of the main story of the game.

For the first time in a Bethesda game, the protagonist is given strictly defining traits that force them to follow a linear path towards an endgame goal. This not only limits the possibilities for role playing, but it creates a pseudo narrative dissonance between the actions that the player makes during the main quests and the rest of their journey in the open world. On one hand the game tries to be an emotional story about family and difficult choices. On the other, it tries to tell a story about hope, building a new healthy community in the post-apocalyptic world. Unfortunately it does not spend enough time on any of these two sides and fails to tell a coherent story as a result of their inability to exist in correlation.

This new way of storytelling is totally uncalled for and it betrays the philosophy of player freedom that BGS has always had. Fallout 4 is a lesser RPG in almost every aspect, even compared to Fallout 3: The removal of the karma system (and the ability to role play as an evil persona); The new “dialogue wheel” which only gives the illusion of choice but ultimately lacks any consequences; The voiced protagonist with defined traits and goals; The removal of skills making your character inexplicably proficient in any kind of weapon and power armor from the very start of the game; The overall lack of choice in quests or the illusion of such. All of these aspects were hallmarks of the franchise and, in my opinion, made the previous Fallout games one of the best RPG games of all time.

Moreover, the quest scripts themselves are repetitive, uninspired and boring. In terms of their mechanics, the quests of Fallout 4 could very well exist in an MMORPG, just in bigger numbers. All quest objectives can be narrowed down to: Acquire X item, place X item, kill X NPC, talk to X NPC, escort X NPC. Inexplicably, 95% of the population of the Commonwealth consists of generic, respawning enemies to kill in an attempt by Bethesda to bring the franchise to the mainstream audience of action hungry FPS players.

The lack of innovation in the mechanics of the game might very well be due to engine limitations. Unsurprisingly, Bethesda decided to use an upgraded version of the engine that they used for Skyrim. This is not the first time that the Fallout franchise receives this kind of treatment as Fallout 3 used an upgraded version of Oblivion's engine. It might have made sense at the time, as Fallout 3 was Bethesda’s first try at the IP and there was a certain amount of risk involved but it cannot be justified after the huge success of both Fallout 3 and Skyrim.

There has been an argument that the team behind these games is considerably small and they like to keep it this way because they are used to working with each other. This is possibly the biggest lie that Bethesda’s PR team has come up with and anyone with even a little knowledge about the game industry can pick it apart. I am totally fine with BGS keeping their artists and world designers and writers as they are. However, the choice by Bethesda not to hire more software engineers and graphics designers is a purely business decision since those types of employees rarely have any influence on the overall theme of the game. It is unforgivable for a AAA title in 2015 to have so many bugs, to look considerably worse than other games that came out in the same year while running poorly. This is not the quality that we should expect from the company behind some of the best selling games of the decade. As long as the community shows that they are willing to forgive poor mechanics, ugly, not optimized textures and game breaking bugs, BGS will keep releasing games in an unfinished state.

It forces you to get creative, which is an area that most games fail in. The variety in weapons and enemies are fantastic, and there have been numerous battles that have really got my heart pounding. The variety in builds are also great, allowing you tons of options to customized your character through traits and clothing. Some people have complained about the graphics, but I think they're fine. If you use mods, like Springtime in the Commonwealth, it will greatly improve the landscape, and make it feel less baron and depressing. Mods in general greatly improve the game in my opinion, especially during a second play-through. The world is large like the other fallout games, but they learned from their mistakes and added more urban areas to make the world feel a little more dense. Being able to customize your weapons and armor is also nice.

Now for the cons: Like fallout 3, the game suffers from a sub-par story, an unsatisfying ending, and non-memorable characters. They also dumbed down the dialog system, making it so you can only respond with Yes, No, Sarcastic, and what the hell are you talk about? This makes it so you don't actually know what your character is going to say in a conversation, not like it really matters because the choices you make don't really make any difference. This is a game that brags about have a **** ton of dialog, but it's mostly post-apocalyptic psycho-babble that gets tedious very quickly. They also destroyed the desire to go out on your own and discover new locations. You'll come across a cool building and go inside and clear it, but later on in the game you'll be given a random quest that sends you there anyway, making it pointless to have gone there before the quest. Pretty much all the side quests are dumb, randomly-generated fetch quests, and you'll have to do a bunch of them if you want to progress in one of the 4 factions. Like all of bethesda's RPG's, the companions are a joke, and you're better off just going it alone. Like I said in the pro's, upgrading and modifying your equipment is a nice touch, but actually pulling it off is the most tedious thing in the game. You'll spend half the game looking at broken selves, lockers and desks looking for items like duct tape and glass. Because a lot of the items you need to upgrade your equipment are heavy, every 10 minutes you'll be fast traveling to your settlement to unload all this junk. You'll constantly be plagued with "You're carrying too much to run" notice, making it you have to reorganize your inventory every 5 minutes. The crippled limbs system is still in place and is as infuriating as ever. All of these issues would be tolerable if it wasn't for the game-killing crashes. As I write this I am currently stuck in a building where it crashes if I try to get to the top, but also crashes when I try to descend and leave the building, making it so I have to load an old save. Seriously Bethesda? This game has been out for almost a year now, these kind of issues shouldn't exist.

I vented about the con's a little more than I meant to, but overall I think this game is more good than bad. I just hope in future versions of the game that Bethesda will fix these issues instead of patting themselves on the back because of these ass-kissing critics.

Fallout 4 does a poor job of this despite its improvement in some areas and the addition of some interesting game mechanics that ultimately prove to be shallow.

You will enjoy the game immensely starting off, but a combination of a nonsensical story, realizing that neither your actions or dialogue matter (ending boils down to which faction your side with), and that all the new game mechanics prove shallow (perhaps this is why they are relying on mods for consoles?) will start to sour your experience over time. There are many positives to the game, and if someone had never experienced Fallout before, this would probably still be an enjoyable game. It does however redeem itself with innovative new mechanics that redefine how Fallout makes you feel and think while you sink dozens or hundreds of hours into the Wasteland. In short, while it's not perfect it does make for an enjoyable play through for all but the most overzealous fanboys.

    Quickly let's review what worked:

    1. The base building mechanic, while rough compared to other similar mechanics in modern games, is an enjoyable pastime and a needed break from the monotony of wandering the Wasteland.

    2. The map is expansive, while still keeping major cities close enough together to run between them if the player chooses.

    3. The enemies prove to be just as classic as in Fallout 3, with some new twists to keep them more challenging for casual gamers.

    4. The V.A.T.S. system is still wonderful and fun to use.

    5. The power armor and upgrades is a welcome and cool addition to the armor scheme.

    and what didn't work:

    1. The voice acting for every storyline character is flat and uninspired. It is painfully obvious that the voice actors weren't engaged in the story lines and were simply reading from a script that desperately needed some personality.

    2. The main storyline is routine for a Bethesda game (someone takes a loved one and I must find them etc.) and leaves a lot to be desired. The player should want to complete the main story arc, but most will skip it entirely until completely necessary.

    3. Bugs, bugs, and more bugs. Ranging from small annoyances like broken NPC bodies, to game breaking ones where quest givers are missing and players fall through the ground. This iteration of Fallout marks Bethesda yet again as the king of buggy RPGs.

    4. The graphics seem to be only a small step up from the Fallout 3 engine. On new systems and with a six year gap between games, people expect the art to evolve not stagnate. Unfortunately this is becoming a trend with Bethesda releases (see Skyrim, ESO, etc.) and it doesn't keep graphics nuts appeased.

While Fallout 4 is a fun play and the base building is a welcomed addition, Fallout 4 leaves a lot to be desired in the area of story, voice acting, and graphics. This warrants a 7/10 from me as I did enjoy the game, but I always felt it could have been so much more.

One more thing in Fallout 3 and New Vegas a lot of the time you would be terrified of the creatures of the wasteland even the bloatfly but it doesn't seem to shock me in fallout New Vegas (In my opinion very underrated) I was travelling through the wasteland mashing the LB or RB (I can't remember) to get the pip boys auto-aim feature up because I was generally terrified of even the simplest of creatures in Fallout 4 they are pests. This review is mainly negative so your wondering why do I give it a 6 because its not necessarily a bad game I can still have fun in the game but I need breaks because as I said earlier Im bored after an hour or 2 and will turn off the game and will return to the game about 3 days later but I do give a thumbs up to the base building I did spend hours fortifying Sanctuary Hills into a fortress/ Village. I would recommend it to only die hard Fallout fans and gamers who like to explore more than do story. Expand

I see a lot of malcontent revolved around the game being too similar too Skyrim, Far Cry and to some extent with Minecraft in terms of house building. Yes, the game has definitely been shaped around other game models. But in complete fairness, these game models have proven to be both successful and entertaining. I personally really enjoy the major changes done.

On a negative note however, this game is not finished. There are way too many bugs, glitches and corrupt saves files. It is imperative that a single-player based game distributed by a major company such as Bethesda should be completely functional at its release. Unfinished/Broken games kill immersion. It's really a stab to the heart to invest countless hours within a mission to then discover it was all for nothing because of a corrupted save file, AI glitching/not responding or simply the player getting stuck between two rocks. Every passionate gamer jumped on the hype train for Fallout 4 with great expectations. It's sad to see many people jump of the train due to the beta-nature of this game.

Bethesda. Get your act together. Please.

    Pros:
-The game will last you a long time if you are the type of person who likes to explore, there's a lot to see and do in the game
-There are a variety of different companions in this game most have intriguing back-stories and offer different perks if you either romance them or get them to the highest level of friendship.
-The Radio now features more songs than ever
-The new power armour system is fantastic
-No level cap means lots of gameplay and certain enemies level with you making it a bit challenging
    -Hardcore mode is pretty awesome
-Changing weather and radiation storms are pretty sweet to see come to console.
-Settlement building can be fun at times
    -Can romance multiple people
-Game has a ton of new mechanics such as cooking, chem crafting, the ability to modify power armour etc.
-Voiced protagonist is actually not bad and is kind of nice to hear seeing as Bioware did a similar type of thing with Mass Effect and it worked well for them, it certainly doesn't fail in this situation.

    Cons:
-Radio station has every song in fallout 3 so saying they have more is kind of a lie, they have the same amount of "new" songs that every game before it had
-Not really any new enemies aside from maybe one or two
-"Legendary" enemies feel a bit cheap and after a while the legendary stuff is not worth picking up
-Companions like and dislike system can grow annoying with certain companions disliking when you improve settlements or get in power armour
-The graphics aren't anything to brag about
-The inventory system in fallout 3 worked better and didn't take forever to find holotapes and notes
-The voiced protagonist is a nice change up but most the time the dialog options result in the same exact thing, even being rude to people doesn't seem to make much of a difference
-Trying to repair settlements costs you either a ton of caps for shipments or your carry weight, you'll spend a lot of time trying to scrap things to lighten the load you're carrying and even then theyre not weightless
-Removing the Karma system isn't better than improving it
-story is short and rather linear, it can be completed in probably 10 hours if you so desire
-One of the factions is essential and no matter which of the endings you choose
    -Kinda buggy at times.

All in all the game I would rate about a 7.5, it is fun and compelling and with three days of gameplay I have yet to accomplish everything. The world is massive and expands on the lore, it's fun to play and Bethesda are still talking about releasing mods for it for free. There is a lot to see and do but the game suffers in the story department, the graphic department, the music department and many other departments. Fans of New Vegas probably will be satisfied but want more, fans of fallout 3 and Skyrim will probably find the game to be great. it really depends on the player and playstyle.

This version of Fallout, is more cartoony and less realistic and dark. The dialogue system has been nerfed, but the combat system has improved. The story missions are not as fun as the previous fallouts, but the world feels much more full and alive. It will definitely surprise you as a fallout game, for some this change is needed but for others it seems to strange. For me fallout 4 gets a 7/10.

Wandering around, seeing something cool in the distance, going there, killing all the bad guys, grabbing the loot, seeing something else in the distance, going there, repeat. It's all back in Fallout 4.

That being said though, they have taken quite a few steps back with this game. Yes, the RPG system has been simplified. There are no skills anymore, weapon and armor don't degrade, there is no karma system, and the perks system has been reworked. The skills and reworked perks system, I can live with. The other two, not so much. I imagine they did it to streamline the series and appeal to a wider audience. The lack of a karma system means that the only meaningful choices you get to make are what factions to join, which leaves little room for any real role-playing. The story and setting this time around also don't have the appeal of Fallout 3. With a few exceptions, characters are flat and uninteresting, and this isn't helped by the lack of interesting player dialogue choices. Boston also doesn't have the uniqueness that Washington DC had. The usual Bethesda bugs are still in abundance. NPC followers can get snagged on objects, static cars can unexpectedly go flying and crush you, bad VATS cameras will glitch through enemies, and so on. The UI is also a bit of a mess. The pipboy menus in general are cluttered and confusing, and certain key binds are hard bound to actions. You can also build settlements now. It's a cool idea, but poorly explained and implemented. 30 hours in, I still don't know what ultimate purpose they serve or how it benefits me.

Onto the positives. The world looks great. The art style in general is more colorful and vibrant than Fallout 3's, helped by a much improved graphics engine. Art quality is hit or miss though. Some areas look great while others look laughably bad. Character models and animations have been improved. 3rd person view in particular feels much better because of this. Character creation is also very robust, with tons of face customization options. The gun gameplay and general player navigation is also improved, and feels more in line with what you'd expect from a modern FPS. It can still be quite janky, especially when jumping or trying to navigate rocky terrain. You can also craft weapons and armor now, which is great. That also means every little clutter item in the world should be picked up, as they are used for crafting.

So in conclusion, if you loved Fallout 3 for it's setting and and exploration gameplay, Fallout 4 will give you more of that but with a bit of next-gen polish. If you wanted a deep RPG experience, then the streamlining that Bethesda has done may disappoint you. Though not the classic that it's predecessor was, Fallout 4 is still a good game and a worthy addition to the Fallout series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is my second review of F4, after 287 hours and completing all faction endings.

My original score of 9/10 was far too generous. Although this game does have many good things to say about it, it suffers heavily from critical flaws that bring it down from the masterpiece it might have been with a better story and much more fulfilling endings.

After completing all endings and main mission quests, my conclusion is that F4's story and ending(s) in particular are some of the most disappointing in gaming. Along with the terribly flat ending to Fallout 3, I'm pretty convinced that Bethesda simply cannot stick the landing when it comes to Fallout universe endings.

The game begins the day the world ended by atomic annihilation. Frankly, it should have started before that. The player is either the mother or father of an infant son named Shaun, but both Shaun and the other parent are woefully underutilized and one-dimensional. They're not even one-dimensional, since you only experience this setting for all of 10 minutes before you emerge from Vault 111. Your wife/husband has been murdered and your son kidnapped. Of course, because we've known these characters for all of 12 minutes, none of this provides much in the way of motivation.

And so out you go, exploring the remnants of the pre-war world and, occasionally, looking for your lost son. Or not. Many people have already covered this, but the sense of urgency your character SHOULD feel in his circumstances is lost immediately. You end up coming into contact with the four major factions in the Commonwealth: the Minutemen, the Railroad, the Institute, and the Brotherhood of Steel.

Eventually, you join one of these factions, and make it into the Institute to find that your missing son, Shaun, is the leader of the shadowy group. This plot twist is poorly executed and filled with holes. There is a lot of deliberate misdirection on the part of the writers, and they don't earn the surprise that this revelation is supposed to be.

And then you pick one faction and see the story through to the end. And although there are four factions, there are only TWO endings. One, you join the Institute, become it's leader, destroy the Railroad and Brotherhood, and Shaun dies. In the other, no matter what non-Institute faction you choose, you destroy the Institute and Shaun dies. That's it. There's no diplomatic solution, no alliances to be made, just the mass-murder of one or more opposing factions. And in all of these questlines, your character is given precisely ZERO agency! There is always an NPC there to tell you what to do, how to do it, and who to do it with. Even the Institute, which selects you as it's leader, then has Father/Shaun tell you what to do!!! At no point is the player given options on, say, how to destroy the Brotherhood of Steel and cripple the Prydwen. So many opportunities were missed by forcing the player to do exactly what the writers wanted them to do...

And the icing on top of this disappointing cake is the closing cinematic, which in Fallout games past have served as an epilogue of sorts, explaining how the choices you made affected the people, groups, and world you just spend many hours interacting with. In Fallout 4? It's the same boring monologue from the player character, no matter which faction you chose or what decisions you made during your playthrough. And on top of the fact that it's the same dialogue no matter what ending, it's the dialogue we heard in THE RELEASE TRAILER!!! Meaning if you paid any attention to this game before playing it, you've already heard the ending dialogue before you even fire it up!

There is no other explanation for this than laziness on the part of Bethesda. They spent 7 years making this game, and although many parts of it are fantastic, they simply continue to show that their writing staff cannot construct a compelling story with a satisfactory ending. In the Elder Scrolls universe, maybe...but not in the Fallout universe.

If you read my earlier review in which I gave the game a 9/10, I defended the game against many of its critics. Now, I sort of see where they were coming from. A game with a fantastic story can overcome many of its failings, but having now finished the game in every way possible...well, it's a letdown. It deserves high marks for its game world (which is vast, full of locations to explore, and oozes atmosphere) and improved shooting mechanic. But this game SHOULD rank as one of 2015's most disappointing games because we've seen what Bethesda is capable of in a masterpiece like Skyrim. This game had all the indications of being able to meet that benchmark prior to its release, but having now explored it for nearly 300 hours, I can safely say that the entire game, as a whole, let me down.

The amount of content available is really quite incredible. The side quests are what most people gravitate to in these types of games, and its crucial to make them fun, and for the most part they are. Some quests are repetitive, (especially the ones at Sanctuary), but otherwise they feature fun characters and interesting diversions. The issue I have is that the main story isn't all that interesting. While some of the twists were impressive, I left the game not feeling the same attachment to characters that I did in Fallout 3. The ending was pretty anti-climatic as well, (although I guess that also applies to Fallout 3).

The mechanics are improved quite a bit and the improved map system and opening items system really made this game a lot more accessible than Fallout 3. Still, the characters weren't as memorable, main story not as interesting and locations not as iconic. Fallout 4 is a fun game for sure, but isn't one I fervently return to.

    Cons:

    * Dialogue wheel isn't as in depth as previous games and don't have as much as of an effect in the story, making it feel artificial.

    * While the graphics are on par for the most part, bethesda hasn't changed much and with this leaves a feeling of the same old, same old.

    * Loading screens are used more than often and can be a drag, taking up to more than a minute each

    * Bugs and crashing are slowly being patched, but are still an issue in early 2016

Now ive finished it, i felt it better to change a few things. While this game is enjoyable at times, it becomes extremley repetitive very quickly. I was never really invested in a quest or really cared about the characters, with the exception of the Paladin Danse revelation.

The ending was a massive downpoint, theres no beating around the bush, the ending sucked. Since ive finished it ive went and seen the so called "alternative" endings and they are basically the same except with a dfferent group. The choices in the game don't matter, ive never played a Bethesda game which has such black/white choices! Most of the time the choice i wanted wasn't available.

I've played all the previous Fallout games. I enjoyed the changes for what they were in Fallout 3 and thoroughly enjoyed it (probably one of my best xbox 360 experiences). I didn't enjoy New Vegas, I just couldn't get into it. As for Fallout 4, the best I can say is that it's...good. So far, it hasn't taken me to the heights of entertainment as found in Fallout 3 (should I nuke Megaton?) but it is still quite an enjoyable experience...

    Pros

    - The gunplay has been much improved from Fallout 3, and although it doesn't (thankfully) play like a shooter, I felt I had a bit more control when it came to combat. VATS is still included, but now instead of freezing time, it simply slows time down considerably. Many have complained about this, but I like this change - it forces the player to think a bit quicker in these situations.

    - The world of Fallout 4 doesn't seem to be that big. However, there is so much detail crammed into every corner of the game map, and there is always plenty to see and do. The environment is much more colourful and vibrant than that of Fallout 3 and this helps when it comes to exploration, as I always see something of interest in the distance that I want to check out.

    - Graphics - For such a large and complex open world game, I don't expect it to have state of the art graphics - it just couldn't work under that pressure. The character models aren't overly detailed and their animations (especially lip syncing) aren't great. The environment and lighting, however, are fantastic, and for a game like this, the world really is the most important character.

    Cons

    - The story is weak - there's no getting around that. I just didn't really care if my character found his family or not. It had the potential, especially showing how good life was with the character's family before the war, but it never built on that.

    - Choice - this has always been a big part of Fallout, and here it has been neutered considerably. As mentioned in other reviews, you could negotiate many situations - double crossing characters, bribing, intimidating them etc. But this has mostly been stripped out of Fallout 4 and overly simplified, which is a shame.

    - UI - not something a lot of people have talked about, but this really bugs me - the UI on this game is a nightmare. It's ugly, garish and extremely clunky to navigate.

    - Gameplay - this is a funny one - it improves on many of Fallout 3/NV mechanics and is a smoother experience for it, but I just don't seem to be having as much fun as I did in Fallout 3. I don't know if it's because of the story or the world or the characters, but it just doesn't grab my attention like F3 did.

Overall, it's simply a good game. It's not amazing, it's not terrible. There's plenty to do and can be enjoyed, and for that it's worth playing. It's just not as entertaining as previous iterations.

I can't really comment on bug crippling the game etc, because, aside from the odd dialogue-related issue, I haven't really experienced any bugs or performance issues.

    This is a solid game all around, yes it isn't as good as Skyrim for a number of reasons;

--Too many boring go clear a building quests
    --Locations reused multiple times
    --Uglier terrain
--Nameless NPCs to 'flesh out' cities
    --Lack of location variety
    --Obvious copy and pasted areas
    --More bland infinitely generated quests

But it does come with a bunch of upgrades

--you don't have to level up a perk to unlock a perk, you are free as long as you meet the level requirement for that stat
--you don't have to go into a menu to loot containers and bodies
--your followers all have their own backstories, and as they get to like you they reveal a little bit of it here and there, until they ask you to go on a quest with them!
--completing said follower quest unlocks a perk
--there are multiple factions that actually oppose each other, you can't just join them all

There are also times it seems Bethesda didn't care about the game. When you clear out a location to build a settlement, the dead bodies stay there forever, and I am playing in 2021. You'll be addicted and frustrated. It feels so annoying and passive aggressive when they force a random event "kill some people for no real reason" missions to be selected and pop up on your HUD.

This atmosphere is what is known as Fallout 4, and the Fallout universe as a whole follows this same formula. Fallout 4 has its ups and downs like any other game, improving upon certain mechanics, while also leaving out other mechanics that are pivotal to the Fallout universe. The world is huge, allowing for the Indiana Jones in you to jump with glee as you explore various places, collecting loot to upgrade your weapons, armor, and even build structures for certain places. Or of course you can also sell whatever you grab as well, if that takes your fancy. The graphics are a bit watered down in certain areas, and the wasteland as a whole all looks the same from the exterior side of things, but all in all the game does look gorgeous. The weapon and armor system do allow for upgrades which increases the amount of options players have when approaching certain situations, but the lack of base weapons in general is noticeable when compared to the amount of weapon selection that Fallout New Vegas had. Quests are a bit linear, simply sending the player to pick up this at this , or to kill a person to save this person from death, but that is concerning mostly the side quests, not the main quest line which is diverse and fun to traverse at least the first time around. The Pipboy side of things has pretty much remained the same as past Fallout games as well, allowing the player to manage their inventory, do their quests, tune in to radio stations across the wasteland, among various other things. When it comes down to it, if the player wants a huge world to explore, a bunch of quests to do, quite a bit of weapon customization, and plenty of people/creatures to interact with, then Fallout 4 is the game for them, even with its certain flaws.

I'm a total fan of Fallout, but this one has disappointed me a lot. Compared to Fallout 3 and New Vegas, it loses almost everything despite being a next gen game. And they have incomprehensibly decided to eliminate many of the things that made this saga great.
Of the bugs I do not even speak ... just say that I've had them of all types:

Sudden expulsions to the menu losing the progress you have not saved, hang up the game that made me turn off the console, missions that do not start, continuous failures in the map marker (with what that means in a giant map like this) failures in the Nuka World DLC that prevented me from finishing it, etc etc etc ...

Conclusion: in this way Bethesda loses loyal customers who feel deeply disappointed.

I am inclined to rate the game worse because I don't particularly like playing it. I have not completed the game yet (currently at level 32) and not sure I will. The game is just too gloomy for my tastes, but others may like the post apocalyptic wasteland theme better.

On the positive side for me, it is a vast open world and you are pretty much free to do as you please. The first person view & controls are decent but I cannot get used to some of the button assignments on the controller. Graphics to me are reasonable. I don't think having higher resolution garbage/waste to look at would improve things much. Many weapon styles to choose from and to some degree you can tailor your perk points for different styles of play. I have been basically crash free and the quick save feature is nice (if you remember to do it once in a while).

Where it falls short to me:

    * NPC's are awful (to look at, talk to, listen to)
    * Inventory management overwhelms play time
    * Weapon mods improve weapons well, but renames them and they are lost in my pip-boy (see item above)
    * The naming of armor,/weapons in general makes it a chore. All names start with adjectives instead of nouns.
    * Interacting with NPC's generally requires spamming the 'A' button (or more patience than I have)
    * My character is a complete dork and generally looks like a fool in his mismatched outfit of junk
    * Romance option? With these NPC's?
    * Monetary system (caps) seems pointless. I never seem to actually buy or sell anything.
    * Really don't care for the old style dumb terminal pip-boy/computer interface (map, inventory, hacking, etc.)
    * Just too gray, dark, dismal, littered for me.
    * No rhyme or reason to damage levels. A big mosquito should not survive multiple .50 cal. sniper hits.
    * What actually is the main story? To recover my son that I bonded with for 13 seconds?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout 4 is an excellent game. The graphics, sound effects, music, open world environment are fantastic. But, it struggles to be an excellent 'Fallout' game. The problems that this game faces are not easily spotted unless you have played previous titles. And it is through comparison that the issues creep in.

The number one issue is by and large the dialogue. Not what is actually said, having played over 25 hours so far I have heard enough of it to see it as 'ok', but rather how it fits into the setting and story. Your character, unlike in previous titles, is completely new to the world. (Thawed out of a cryogenic tube 200 years after the nuclear war and released into a completely new and destroyed world). But through the dialogue with both major and random NPCs your character is barely fazed by any of this. The dialogue options occasionally point to a 'what are super mutants/gunners/brotherhood?' option if it has been mentioned by an NPC but your character isn't fazed by anything that is said and it takes you out of the setting because your character already knows what is/has happened and characters met before they logically should. Furthermore, the dialogue options force you to take the 'good guy' approach to almost all situations with the 'bad' option essentially ending the conversation till you agree and the other two, more info/sarcastic, options adding nothing.

My second issue, is the combat. There is so much combat in this game! Dialogue, quest, randomly walking through the wasteland all you do is constantly fight people. You never get a sense that you are in a post-apocalyptic world, rather a random destroyed city with roaming gangs. Gouls for example, the mutated remnants of those not lucky enough to find a Vault to hide in, aren't found in dark subways or tunnels away from people but walking around in broad daylight, randomly, everywhere, just so you have something to kill on your way to the next quest.

Other things such as perks being completely removed, useless companions, crafting (although fun especially with weapon add ons) gets frustrating for lack of materials and more fetch and kills quests than you can shake a stick at make the game a dumbed down version of previous titles.

If this is your first Fallout game you'll love it which is why I gave it a 7 and not lower, but for veterans it will be nothing more than a nostalgia trip, ticking the boxes of deathclaws/power armour/vaults/gouls and so on (all of which you'll find within the first 30mins completely ruining the anticipation of bigger/better enemies/gear to come).

Overall, fun, even for vets, but empty your brain first, newbies with enjoy a lot . . . 7/10

I heavily disagree with people calling it the worst Fallout game because Fallout Brotherhood of Steel exists and was once canon...

Overall, not a bad game but is heavily held back and can get repetitive once the main game is done. A great start for people interested in the Fallout Series but for veteran RPG players, it isn't a good option over New Vegas and Fallout 3, 2 and 1. Really Fallout 4 was the first game I got for my PS4 and really thought it could be a really good Fallout game. Really I felt it was a little dumb down maybe for new coming Fallout players. Either way I kinda felt the enemies were made a bit too easy in fact there is a death claw very close to the start of the game that you just kill really easy, if this was one of the older Fallout games a death claw would really kill you and the thing is death claws were a bit more smaller than they are in this new Fallout game. Really and it's not just the fact that I hate the game just for one enemy I really felt they could do a little more to help out with the story of Fallout 4. There are a few things I like about this game like the fact that your health is now effected by how much radiation you take on so you have to keep your radiation low to make sure you keep in good health. Back in the older Fallout games if radiation got to 100% then you were dead and it didn't effect your health at all. I just feel like it makes more of a penalty for having radiation so you are more likely to avoid radiation. The World is great, but it doesn't really feel like a Fallout game when almost everywhere there are humans. I would love to see more of a dying world, not a Fallout Renaissance.
The main story is great. I really liked it. But I didn't really get the point of the Institute, replacing Humans with robot Humans? Yeah, doesn't really make sense. Other factions are good tho.
The Variety of Enemies was fine, but I often just stood there and was shooting a gang of ghouls.

When this game was released, I was head over heels in love with it. I sank over 50 hours into it in its first week of being released and that was when I was still in High School so that's kinda saying a lot. It seems like everyone loved this game upon release and started to grow bitter towards it once the honeymoon period was over, myself included. I stopped playing it and started to forgot just how much I really enjoyed it. This was a game that I asked to get for Christmas a second time just so I could get the Pip Boy edition so I really must've enjoyed it.

Upon revisiting it, it isn't a bad game. Not by any means. Fallout 4 is very good at doing things that Fallout 3 and New Vegas couldn't but the opposite is also true. Where 3 and New Vegas shine in things like roleplaying, world building and memorability, Fallout 4 shines in things like character customization, combat and building settlements. I enjoy the Fallout 4 for different reasons and while there are genuine issues I have with the game, I've decided to not let "it's not roleplay-y enough" be one of them.
I beat this game in November of 2015 and November of 2019.

The player never really feels the loss of his son in the intro in any real way because the game didn't give us a reason to care. The intro sequence was brief and sets up the main character without really delving into his identity. (Although this is kind of a moot point because it is suggested in the far harbor dlc that the MC may actually be a synth.) If you're going to give a talking protagonist, make him a story. The key failure here is that Bethesda tried to make that cake and eat it too. The inventory is still clunky, you need to quicksave often to safeguard from crashes, and the gunplay is a bit dated, but what really shines is creativity with the workshops, npc connection, and side missions. (Aside from the settlement gigs). With every release of a new dlc or even functionality with the main game, bethesda found ways to introduce new and cool features to sink hours into, ie raider settlements and robot customization. Some of these needed to be a little more fleshed out, like the vault dlc, but the aspects they add to make the game more enjoyable really do make the game stand out. The story is, well, not that deep. It lacks some finer tuning and deeper emotional value than some of the previous games in the franchise with characters like Shaun and Preston Garvey being particularly overlooked and fundamentally disinteresting. However, the recovery of Shaun and DiMA's secret are two twists that really emphasize what aspects of the stories are good. The general plotpoints make the story worth fleshing out. It's like having a phenomenal storyboard and a so-so script. It just needs to be put together. The guns, robots, settlers, trade lines, settlement customization, VATS, mods, dogmeat, dlc content and faction diversity are all really great. Really the most revealing aspect of my Fallout journey is just how bad Fo76 is, because as average as this game is story-wise compared to all of the previous games, it is light years ahead of Fo76 in almost every conceivable metric. Fo4 is a joy to replay, a solid title entry, and an otherwise unique relic from a developer that has since completely lost their way. 7/10. Expand

Sometimes beautiful, a bit broken, and really quite brilliant in many places, forgiving fans will adore Fallout 4. [Christmas 2015, p.60]
  3. More Fallout 3.9 than 4, but still absolutely essential. Skyrim 2 has a hard act to follow. [Jan 2016, p.67]
