I really don't understand the super low scores for this game on here. 6.1 is a ridiculous average, and not realistic at all. The game has it's problems, the quest lines aren't as interesting as previous games. It's lost a lot of RPG elements that a lot of people loved. But it's still Fallout and it's still amazing. There's no other game I play where I look at the clock, play for a while, look again and 3 hours have passed. It grabs hold and doesn't let go like a good RPG should. Obviously, your mileage may vary and it helps if you enjoy first person shooters on their own merits as well. My game of the year for 2015, which I never expected since I enjoyed the hell out of MGS5 and Bloodborne. The sheer amount of fun to be had here is staggering, if you're on the fence don't listen to the haters.

    This one's a winner.

There is no freedom to create your own character apart from your appearance, you play a set character with a set goal and a set way of doing it.

There is no choice. That's what Fallout is about.

This is one of those games, which proves critics are payed for their reviews.
This is also a game which shows just how deluded some players are, everyone in the end realises they have been taken for a ride, its just a matter of how long they can delude themselves.

When I got my xbox one, I actually wanted the Madden 25 bundle instead. After playing Fallout 4 for ONE HOUR, I was completely amazed. It's beautiful, large, enveloping, and unsettling as hell at points. The odd graphical hiccup is noticeable and funny, but it's an otherwise near perfect game and a monument to this current generation of gaming.

I am not sure where to begin, there is just so much to talk about,i'm going to ignore comparing it to the past games as they are a different kind of fallout,as this one takes a more borderlands approach then for say skyrim. While i'm sad the RPG elements were sidelined,i'm only going to focus on the main game.
Best combat system in a bethesda game to date, combat is far more fluid and fun.

Massive immersive world, everything from weather to random encounters
Top notch crafting, the best I have seen in a RPG game to date.
I constantly saw myself looking for the plentiful collectibles in this game, simply to see every little detail.
There is also a lot more then simply combat, the settlement idea is a grand idea, and I hope to see it in the elder scrolls 6 instead of the on-rail hearth fire house building.
The quests are dynamic and interesting.

    Here are my only problems
Speech is a bit pointless,as no matter the choice you make in the speech, other then intimidating/bribing/persuading.
And the perk/skills system, which isn't a massive deal,I just wish they went more with skyrim or the past games instead.

Overall it is a outstanding game, and I believe the problems aforementioned will be fixed with mods.

Sadly all the good work above is undermined by the decision to go with a fully voiced protagonist which has led to a limitation in outcomes which means whilst there are different speech options they all wind up with basically the same result, a fundamental part of titles like fallout and the elder scrolls game is choice, or the illusion of choice and dare I say it the ability to role play which again is inhibited by the voiced player character, unfortunately for Bethesda the voiced player character has hurt their game and the high point of the modern fallout series remains New Vegas.

Fallout 4 is worth a purchase and at least a single play through, the setting is fun and following recent patches the game is much more stable, if you go into this game knowing that this isn't another skyrim where you are going to immerse yourself in the game for thousands of hours you will not be disappointed, go into this game thinking the opposite and you will be.

In summary a solid game that is overshadowed by the quality of previous titles in the franchise.

The Fallout series has always been prized for its immersive world full of colorful characters and questionable life choices. You can be an angel among men and women or a total jerk, but in Fallout 4, things are a bit more ambiguous.
    (Be weary. Spoilers ahead.)

The game starts a good deal of time in the future, long after the events of 2008’s Fallout 3. The Wasteland is no longer a completely grueling desert of radiation, but a somewhat blooming foundation for the future. Sure, parts are still heavily irradiated and ghouls and super mutants roam about, but there are blue skies and green grass!

One of the first things players will get to do is customize their Wastelander. For the first time, you can select a gender for your character, and players may even hear their name out loud from the game’s characters. There are over 250 names supported.

After customizing your character, you find out you and your family have been selected to move into Vault 111 pending nuclear holocaust. And what do you know? Literally five minutes after sealing the deal, the bombs drop.

You and your husband/wife and newborn baby head to the vault and are cryo-frozen without consent.
Events transpire, which will not be spoiled here, and then the Wasteland is yours to explore. So what’s different this time around?

Well, conversations have been simplified for entry-level players, but choosing your dialogue options is still a blast. It’s a lot more accessible and the camera is adjustable during conversations, a series first.

Gunplay has been greatly improved and it’s a lot more active. The V.A.T.S. system, which allows players to slow down time and choose a body part to target, has been made a real-time component.
Also improved and made ten times more enjoyable is power armor. Oh, the power armor.

The player’s first experience with power armor has them taking on a group of raiders while defending the Minutemen, a militia aimed at protecting the Commonwealth, a large portion of Boston.

You get in this giant, hulking suit, jack a minigun from a helicopter and take the raiders down. Oh, and then a Deathclaw shows up. I’ll let you experience that for yourself. Overall, Fallout 4 retains the charm of previous Bethesda titles.

The adventure and imagination of The Elder Scrolls and the dark, comedic humor of Fallout is all here.
The game is packed with content, side quests, voice acting and more, and you’ll want to play it a few times to catch everything.

It’s more of the same, but better. Like the game’s opening lines say: “War, war never changes.”

But it doesn't have them so you will probably end up abandoning the game after 2 missions to wander about killing and collecting stuff, going back to sanctuary after dark so the annoying NPC's won't bother you while you dump your stuff and, when you have built a nice collection of weapons, you'll just build yourself a nice little hut somewhere out of the way and sit on the porch with your rifle, alone. Fallout 4 totally changed the series into a new and fresh game filled with amazing graphics and fun game play. Bethesda put a lot of effort into this game and the result is outstanding. The RPG aspect fits wonderfully in the world you survive in and the FPS aspect mixes with the RPG aspect to create a masterpiece. A game that is totally worth buying.

The combat was severally improved, so props to Bethesda on that, but in turn, we lost some of the role playing aspects that defined fallout. The story was initially cliched but left me deeply thinking halfway on who I should side with, so the lack of player choice wasn't a total letdown for me. That along with weak settlement construction and some cannon defying choices bethesda made, Fallout 4 is a great game, but far from perfect. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So here we are, another Fallout. It came suprisingly suddenly, which was a positive thing. I still have to open up about the main problem here. I have really tried to understand Bethesda. Really. Makin' games, same system, same way, different setting, all that jazz... But i just can't understand them. You have an amazing series in your hands, like Fallout, a possibility to continue the greatness Black Isle Studios made in the nineties (nope, no nostalgia there, just stating facts), and you make Fallout in to a shooter. Every bit of budget focused on murdering people. And also some talk around the plot that a few interns have come up with. And also the military vibe going around all the time. That is not Fallout, that is just the war-never-changes -part.

I know, pretty aggressive to say all that. All the plotlines have not yet been explored, so i don't know everything the game has to offer. But under all the superficial collecting and tinkering and character progression, everythings is there to improve killing folks. Everything. In the Fallout games before 3 you actually had to kill many monsters in the wasteland of course, but now there are ONLY places to shoot things up. If i buy a game that is advertised as a Post-Nuclear Role-Playing game, i expect to actually have quests and characters that don't involve murdering a legion of people and/or former people. Don't get me wrong, i love my shooters! I really do, i spent my young days shooting all kinds of people in Medal of Honor and Call of Duty games. Also Halo and Unreal were awesome.

Still, Fallout was my main game i always returned to. Why? Because i loved the weirdness, the strangeness of the wasteland, the characters and the mystery of it all. New Vegas brought it back a little, and thanks to Obsidian Entertainment for that. But now we have Fallout 4 to play. Settlements to build with weak tools and systems and defend from lazy attacks and at no consequences. So a strategy/shooter? The settlement building has a lot of potential, i have to admit that. I also find that i do not give a rats ass about the actual settlements, and also about almost about any of the characters. Who actually cares about Preston Garvey? Seriously? One of the universes lamest characters. And the Institute? And actually every faction? I'll just say that i guess i should really take up on writing storylines and brancing questlines. It doesn't seem to be that hard.

Also i do know that shooters before Fallout 4 have had an advanced system of reactions to being shot. Limbs, bullet holes, melee hits. So there's really nothing new there? Just the things that shoud've been in the games before (ghouls and robots losing limbs, but not dying). It is very weird in this day and age to watch limbs stupidly be blown away by pistol fire. Realism is a tricky thing for a game, but the tools are there, developers, use them.

Is the best way to mankinds survival actually to murder everyone? Really? Blowing a big hole in the middle of Boston? And with the actual massive amount of raiders in the game, and also supermutants and ghouls... i do believe that humans would not have survived. The numbers are actually overwhelming. But then there's this one guy from times before who can do it all.

Why can i not finnish the game with Raiders? Why can't you become a supermutant?

Any people with half a brain can understand that developers can and should make better games, and not just games that sell good, and ride the fame with big names like Fallout. Even with all the good parts, this game is a sad example of selling out. Moderately selling out. And it is a sad thing.

Also i hate Bethesda for making HAROLD A COMPLETE TREE IN THE FRIGGIN CAPITAL WASTELAND. COME ON! Should've saved that one for Obsidian.

But... you know... otherwise it's an okay game, played it a lot and can't wait what dlc they come up with for me to criticize.

As far as a 1st person immersive world - it's the best yet. Environments and insanely better than previous Bethesda titles. They might not be at the top of the list, but the wasteland never looked to GOOD. Character models are a weak link, but I can forgive that because I play the game for the environment.

Quests - Like all Bethesda games, I expect some repetition eventually. You have to when you eventually play 300 hours in a single game. So far It's easily the most imaginative story lines yet. The stories within stories (the ones you have to simply observe) are priceless. The key to keeping your gameplay fresh is to NOT rush through the whole map right away - Don't be in a hurry to see everything. Take your time and save things so you still have something new to explore after your character has many hours under their belt.

-I do miss the skills being separate. I prefered the ability to control my skills myself and if I wanted to build up Sneak, Small guns, and Medic quickly, I could keep dumping points into all of them at each level up. Now, Its reduced to picking a Perk that specializes in one thing. And hoping I find skill magazines. I'm sure it's all there as before, but I don't prefer how they are currently organizing it - and dolling it out.

-I also miss that weapons don't deteriorate - it was such a rush to scavenge additional weapons knowing I didn't have to carry them around - I could immediately use them to repair and improve my weapons and have instant gratification. But I also acknowledge the new crafting system provides a more creative and robust solution to that - it just takes longer and I just haven't spent that much time crafting yet.

-I DON'T miss Karma. I don't believe in Karma. If I want to steal something and no one is around, I don't need the lords of the universe judging me. I much much prefer what they've done here - Your follower judges you. You earn their trust (and get rewarded for it) if they like your behavior. It's is so much more real. We DO make different decisions based on who we are around - plus you might have to play 'out of character' because your current follower doesn't like stealing - OR you roleplay that your character has to "play along" in order to get what you need from them. Which ever way, it's so much better.

-Gunplay is much better. I've heard people say it's terrible. No, Fallout 3's gunplay was terrible. This might not be FPS, but the game is not a FPS. I think it works great and I LOVE the new improvement on VATS.

-I would prefer some tutorials because some of the systems are difficult to understand at first. But then again, I figured them out. I don't mind being a little confused and resorting to a quick web tutorial. It's just up to Bethesda to gamble - what is ok for people to figure out and what is too hard? They run the risk of losing people if they get too frustrated out of the gate. I personally, was more than fine with it.

-Bugs. I have yet to run into any game ending bugs. Skyrim used to freeze fairly regular, so this seems WAY more stable than Skyrim. I don't care if a scorpion walks halfway through a wall or if a random raider is floating above ground. The game has been very stable for a Bethesda game. I also cut them some slack in that I believe it's likely impossible to fully debug this game before release. It's too big and there's way too many varibables. I don't think they have a choice but to do the best they can knowing that the mass public will end up revealing large amounts of bugs. If you hate buts that much, you should know not to play a Bethesda game until a couple of patches have been released. I don't think they are lazy, I think its just the fact of an open world this big and dense.

-Crafting settlments is interesting and can be a mini game in its own. This is the 'minecraft' part of the game. While it doesn't seem to be necessary to the story at all (I believe it can be ignored for the most part), it's still a refreshing break and allows for another way in for players. I've heard of some players being so wrapped in settlement building that they largely ignore the rest of the real game. THAT is the definition of an OPEN WORLD. That is the future. Literally do anything you want, as long as you are finding fulfillment in it. I hope to see that sort of thing evolved even further in future Bethesda titles.

In short, I love it. I was hoping it was more of an 'experience' than a 'game'. They certainly delivered!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Being new to the Fallout series, I enter with no preconceptions. I found the game a lot of fun and am over 12 days of play time. I enjoyed the quest lines and the options on how to deal with the factions. I choose to walk the line and keep all of them friendly until the end when the final battle with the Institute was required, or at least the way I decided to go. I did manage to complete the main quest while retaining allied status with all three remaining factions; Minutemen, Railroad, and BOS. Though I did get a quest to attack the BOS by one, I can just ignore it. This keeps my quest options open for now. Sure there are bugs and issues with building, and the faction quests do get boring and repetitive, and once your done with the main quest, it becomes more of exploration, and for me getting the perks associated with the companions topped out. I hope the DLC is good and improves on the play-ability of the game. For me, I got my monies worth out of it and really enjoyed the versatility of game play. I think the building was the key hook for me as if it was just a point and shoot game, it would not have kept my interest. Expand

    Pros:
-The game will last you a long time if you are the type of person who likes to explore, there's a lot to see and do in the game
-There are a variety of different companions in this game most have intriguing back-stories and offer different perks if you either romance them or get them to the highest level of friendship.
-The Radio now features more songs than ever
-The new power armour system is fantastic
-No level cap means lots of gameplay and certain enemies level with you making it a bit challenging
    -Hardcore mode is pretty awesome
-Changing weather and radiation storms are pretty sweet to see come to console.
-Settlement building can be fun at times
    -Can romance multiple people
-Game has a ton of new mechanics such as cooking, chem crafting, the ability to modify power armour etc.
-Voiced protagonist is actually not bad and is kind of nice to hear seeing as Bioware did a similar type of thing with Mass Effect and it worked well for them, it certainly doesn't fail in this situation.

    Cons:
-Radio station has every song in fallout 3 so saying they have more is kind of a lie, they have the same amount of "new" songs that every game before it had
-Not really any new enemies aside from maybe one or two
-"Legendary" enemies feel a bit cheap and after a while the legendary stuff is not worth picking up
-Companions like and dislike system can grow annoying with certain companions disliking when you improve settlements or get in power armour
-The graphics aren't anything to brag about
-The inventory system in fallout 3 worked better and didn't take forever to find holotapes and notes
-The voiced protagonist is a nice change up but most the time the dialog options result in the same exact thing, even being rude to people doesn't seem to make much of a difference
-Trying to repair settlements costs you either a ton of caps for shipments or your carry weight, you'll spend a lot of time trying to scrap things to lighten the load you're carrying and even then theyre not weightless
-Removing the Karma system isn't better than improving it
-story is short and rather linear, it can be completed in probably 10 hours if you so desire
-One of the factions is essential and no matter which of the endings you choose
    -Kinda buggy at times.

All in all the game I would rate about a 7.5, it is fun and compelling and with three days of gameplay I have yet to accomplish everything. The world is massive and expands on the lore, it's fun to play and Bethesda are still talking about releasing mods for it for free. There is a lot to see and do but the game suffers in the story department, the graphic department, the music department and many other departments. Fans of New Vegas probably will be satisfied but want more, fans of fallout 3 and Skyrim will probably find the game to be great. it really depends on the player and playstyle.

The gun play is fun and definitely much better than FO3 and the world is much more colorful and richer
The awesome: open world, story, gameplay, exploration, interesting characters, side quests, and character customization
The bad: glitches, end game story padding

Cool story with too many side quest, mostly poor graphics and mostly irrelevant choices. Game looks good only outside during day time. It took me 22h to finish main story.

Baby looks like plastic and gum.
Game world big but graphics are from the 360. Not much innovation and they actually made the conversation system obsolete by not having any variations in most conversations no matter which option you choose. Very lazy. Wish I didnt get it online as I would have returned the disk.
If youre a fallout fan you'll have fun. If this is your first attempt at exploring the world.. Try Fallout one first.

Fallout 4 is an ok game, but it's a terrible Fallout game, and I am rating it as such.

The list just goes on. It's an incredibly shallow experience and I grow extremely bored of it's repetetive quests and empty world.

Please, no more of this. Let Obsidian make the next one..

So Fallout 4 is a tricky one for me. I bought into the hype. I lurk the sub-reddit with all its crazy bug gifs. I get jealous reading about amazing sub-quests that lead you down a deeper and deeper rabbit hole. But 20 hours in, something has still not clicked. It might be the environment as I’ve never been a big fan of post-apocalyptic worlds. It might be the Xbox One version with its poor load times, or even the steep learning curve at the start of the game that has caused me numerous frustrating reloads.

Whatever it is, I just can’t seem to push past it. Whilst the storyline is basic in the best of ways, that of a parent looking for their missing son, the delivery seems heavy handed and often jars against the expectation of what you imagine you would do in that situation. As an example - a few hours after leaving the vault and learning your fate in this new alien world, you become the general of a once legendary group of rebels. I understand Bethesda want to empower the player, but something about this feels oddly over-important so early on and it really detracts from the simple drama of finding your missing son.

It’s not all bad. The graphics, whilst already feeling dated in 2016, do enough to immerse and I think there has not been enough mention online about the extraordinary sound design and soundtrack. The timesink of crafting upgrades for weapons, armour, houses, settlements and power armour is very much welcome in a game that begs to be binged. And even though the VATS system seems somewhat game breaking, the combat is exhilarating from the start.

Overall, I’m left feeling like I’ve missed out on something key to Fallout 4 which is holding me back. I get excited when I read a story about a hidden quest, a powerful weapon or a twist in the storyline - but unfortunately the experience for me doesn’t feel worth my few hours of after work gaming time.

I see a lot of reviews stating, "The bad reviews are probably from people who didn't play it enough or at all, or they are nitpicking" I don't think that is true, because they complaints are all very similar. Fallout 4 does a poor job of this despite its improvement in some areas and the addition of some interesting game mechanics that ultimately prove to be shallow.

You will enjoy the game immensely starting off, but a combination of a nonsensical story, realizing that neither your actions or dialogue matter (ending boils down to which faction your side with), and that all the new game mechanics prove shallow (perhaps this is why they are relying on mods for consoles?) will start to sour your experience over time. There are many positives to the game, and if someone had never experienced Fallout before, this would probably still be an enjoyable game. To many fans however, it will start to feel like a disappointment when you peak behind the veil.

This is no longer an immersive post-apocalyptic roleplay game with a coherent overworld, interesting stories/people/factions and different choices to make which.

This could have easily been a 6 but I chose to give it a 7 because there were quite a few things that entertained me. This is the first Fallout I have ever played. This is the first Fallout I have ever played. The graphics are subpar for a next Gen console game. I hated that there was no tutorial for a first-timer like me. The story was promising enough that I felt compelled to play it. However, the sidequests were painfully repetitive and boring. The gameplay for combat gets pretty dull too as your "moves" are limited, relying heavily on VATS. I invested over 100 hrs of gameplay and slowly followed along the main story. Oh and building things for your settlement was annoying, and discourages players from building things properly as it takes a lot of time. I must admit, there were some choices that really test your integrity as a person. However having said that, in order to achieve the best bang for the buck in terms of experience and slices of more story content, you need to be shrewd and not act as high and mighty. I would have rated this game a 8 except the ending kinda suck. I get the message but I didn't get the any satisfaction. I wasn't like "what, that's it?". Was more of "what, that's the ending? Ok where's the real ending". Ok I said some not so good stuff about the game. Here are a few good points for it: choices of how you want this story to end. Despite of a lot of complaints with dialogues and voice overs, I found them decent. Good arsenal of weapons you can wield, depending on your preference. Good perks selection, all are useful and makes it really hard to choose which one to take and improve on. Pretty good score (sound/music). In my opinion, it is worth playing at a cost of $50, not $80 -- and Witcher 3 kicks Fallout 4's ass in most aspects. Expand

Sometimes beautiful, a bit broken, and really quite brilliant in many places, forgiving fans will adore Fallout 4. [Christmas 2015, p.60]
  3. More Fallout 3.9 than 4, but still absolutely essential. Skyrim 2 has a hard act to follow. [Jan 2016, p.67]
