Wandering around, seeing something cool in the distance, going there, killing all the bad guys, grabbing the loot, seeing something else in the distance, going there, repeat. It's all back in Fallout 4.

That being said though, they have taken quite a few steps back with this game. Yes, the RPG system has been simplified. There are no skills anymore, weapon and armor don't degrade, there is no karma system, and the perks system has been reworked. The skills and reworked perks system, I can live with. The other two, not so much. I imagine they did it to streamline the series and appeal to a wider audience. The lack of a karma system means that the only meaningful choices you get to make are what factions to join, which leaves little room for any real role-playing. The story and setting this time around also don't have the appeal of Fallout 3. With a few exceptions, characters are flat and uninteresting, and this isn't helped by the lack of interesting player dialogue choices. Boston also doesn't have the uniqueness that Washington DC had. The usual Bethesda bugs are still in abundance. NPC followers can get snagged on objects, static cars can unexpectedly go flying and crush you, bad VATS cameras will glitch through enemies, and so on. The UI is also a bit of a mess. The pipboy menus in general are cluttered and confusing, and certain key binds are hard bound to actions. You can also build settlements now. It's a cool idea, but poorly explained and implemented. 30 hours in, I still don't know what ultimate purpose they serve or how it benefits me.

Onto the positives. The world looks great. The art style in general is more colorful and vibrant than Fallout 3's, helped by a much improved graphics engine. Art quality is hit or miss though. Some areas look great while others look laughably bad. Character models and animations have been improved. 3rd person view in particular feels much better because of this. Character creation is also very robust, with tons of face customization options. The gun gameplay and general player navigation is also improved, and feels more in line with what you'd expect from a modern FPS. It can still be quite janky, especially when jumping or trying to navigate rocky terrain. You can also craft weapons and armor now, which is great. That also means every little clutter item in the world should be picked up, as they are used for crafting.

So in conclusion, if you loved Fallout 3 for it's setting and and exploration gameplay, Fallout 4 will give you more of that but with a bit of next-gen polish. If you wanted a deep RPG experience, then the streamlining that Bethesda has done may disappoint you. Though not the classic that it's predecessor was, Fallout 4 is still a good game and a worthy addition to the Fallout series.

Fallout 4 has missed the "fallout" part.

The character customization has been dumbed down. Now you have only SPECIAL and perks, with half of the perks being only percentage increases. Skills and traits have been removed. The dialogue is terrible and slow (you'll probably skip it), the voicing for your character ruins the immersion. The speech wheel is the worst part, it gives you 4

The dialogue is terrible and slow (you'll probably skip it), the voicing for your character ruins the immersion. The speech wheel is the worst part, it gives you 4 options that basically are "yes", "no", question, sarcasm or "maybe". But none of these option matter as whatever you say it results in the same result, which sometimes is the total opposite of what you want, killing the replay-value.
The story is pretty bad, especially in the second part, where you do stuff for no real reason. Every quest ends in a call-of-duty stile level, you just kill enemies, loot stuff until you get tired and then go on. In previous fallouts you could have avoided the shooting by speaking with people, sneaking or in other ways. In fallout 4 you just kill enemies.
The map is pretty cool, it is more colorful than fallout 3's, but IMO feels smaller. In most of the map there's either enemies or nothing, you won't find amazing stuff that will start a quest. You will find very few secondary quests which are actually quests and not just "go there and kill people because I told you so".
The new features are ok, the weapon modding is awesome but there tends to be an "obvious choice" when you customize weapons. The settlement building is fun the first time but soon after you will ignore it as you gain absolutely nothing from helping people except their complaints.

Fallout 4 is not a good FALLOUT game, but it is a decent game. An open-world FPS with some rpg elements. I obtained roughly 40 hours from the game and at least half of them I would call them enjoyable. I do not recommend picking it up, as the other games in the series (3 and NV) are much better even if older.

The world is massive. You most likely will not run out of things to do for many hours in. The NPC are great and voice acted well. The gameplay in general is amazing. However, we come to the biggest issue with the game: technical hiccups. Like many of Bethesda's other games the game can be glitchy and is not well optimized. I will give the cruddy graphics a pass since the game is massive, however, frame rate drops even on top PCs is unacceptable. Well all have given Bethesda a pass due to the scale of their games. However, its 2015 and they are still there. It is starting to become ridiculous. Bethesda NEEDS to update their engine. Other bugs include: Companions running straight into enemy fire or getting blown up randomly with no enemies around. Also quests have been known to glitch causing you to have to revert back to a previous save file to complete it. Luckily the massive scale and great gameplay still allows this game a positive review. The game overcomes many of flaws and is well worth 60 dollars. Expand

People are saying that this game wasn't anything close to what they wanted, but I say that it's the best Fallout title that this generation will probably see for at least the next 15 years(hopefully, because Bethesda should take their sweet time when making their games), and the best Fallout entry since Fallout 2. The Commonwealth is much different than the Capital Wasteland, The MojavePeople are saying that this game wasn't anything close to what they wanted, but I say that it's the best Fallout title that this generation will probably see for at least the next 15 years(hopefully, because Bethesda should take their sweet time when making their games), and the best Fallout entry since Fallout 2. The Commonwealth is much different than the Capital Wasteland, The Mojave Desert, and The West Coast. It's more developed and populated then any other setting in the Fallout Universe, but that doesn't mean that the game is easier. Like when anything else is exposed to the effects of time, the commonwealth has evolved to become the deadliest environment in any fallout game released. The best thing about the game, so far, is how challenging it is. When I had the option to set my difficulty I went to survival mode, because usually bethesda's games aren't too difficult. But Fallout 4 has proven to be a welcome challenge where everything can and will kill you in a few seconds, if you don't plan right. Strategy has become a vital tool when clearing a "dungeon", where as in fallout 3 I would just run around and shoot everything in the frontal lobe. The crafting system is fun to, but it's easy to acquire too many settlements to manage at once, without making it a full time job.

However, The only few cons that come with this game are the bugs and the storyline, which is so uninteresting, I haven't even gotten past the 5th main quest quest. The only game breaking bugs that I have encountered, I am playing on the Xbox One, have been where a companion would walk into a wall, fly up into the air, and I got a message saying that they headed back to red rocket gas station.

But still. I love the game, I think it's the best fallout that I've ever played, It certainly lived up to my expectations, and I plan on fully completing the game.

I didn't go into Fallout 4 with much expectation. That's not because I didn't like what I saw from pre-release material, it's just that I didn't really follow it much until launch, and that's maybe why I'm enjoying the game a lot more than those who have given it scathing reviews regarding it's story, graphics, and the change of certain systems in-game.

I've played all the previous Fallout games. I enjoyed the changes for what they were in Fallout 3 and thoroughly enjoyed it (probably one of my best xbox 360 experiences). I didn't enjoy New Vegas, I just couldn't get into it. As for Fallout 4, the best I can say is that it's...good. So far, it hasn't taken me to the heights of entertainment as found in Fallout 3 (should I nuke Megaton?) but it is still quite an enjoyable experience...

    Pros

    - The gunplay has been much improved from Fallout 3, and although it doesn't (thankfully) play like a shooter, I felt I had a bit more control when it came to combat. VATS is still included, but now instead of freezing time, it simply slows time down considerably. Many have complained about this, but I like this change - it forces the player to think a bit quicker in these situations.

    - The world of Fallout 4 doesn't seem to be that big. However, there is so much detail crammed into every corner of the game map, and there is always plenty to see and do. The environment is much more colourful and vibrant than that of Fallout 3 and this helps when it comes to exploration, as I always see something of interest in the distance that I want to check out.

    - Graphics - For such a large and complex open world game, I don't expect it to have state of the art graphics - it just couldn't work under that pressure. The character models aren't overly detailed and their animations (especially lip syncing) aren't great. The environment and lighting, however, are fantastic, and for a game like this, the world really is the most important character.

    Cons

    - The story is weak - there's no getting around that. I just didn't really care if my character found his family or not. It had the potential, especially showing how good life was with the character's family before the war, but it never built on that.

    - Choice - this has always been a big part of Fallout, and here it has been neutered considerably. As mentioned in other reviews, you could negotiate many situations - double crossing characters, bribing, intimidating them etc. But this has mostly been stripped out of Fallout 4 and overly simplified, which is a shame.

    - UI - not something a lot of people have talked about, but this really bugs me - the UI on this game is a nightmare. It's ugly, garish and extremely clunky to navigate.

    - Gameplay - this is a funny one - it improves on many of Fallout 3/NV mechanics and is a smoother experience for it, but I just don't seem to be having as much fun as I did in Fallout 3. I don't know if it's because of the story or the world or the characters, but it just doesn't grab my attention like F3 did.

Overall, it's simply a good game. It's not amazing, it's not terrible. There's plenty to do and can be enjoyed, and for that it's worth playing. It's just not as entertaining as previous iterations.

I can't really comment on bug crippling the game etc, because, aside from the odd dialogue-related issue, I haven't really experienced any bugs or performance issues.

Fallout 4 Image This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel bad for all the hate Bethesda is getting. People need to realize something important:

This game is much worse on consoles due to frame rate being capped at 30FPS and textures being compressed. Load times are also excruciating on console.

This is not just Bethesda's fault, this is the fault of the people for buying a $350 console that is essentially a $700 strength branded gaming PC, and expecting $1400 gaming PC power. Maybe games like Battlefront were optimized for console better, but on PC with everything on Ultra, this game is everything I wanted it to be in terms of graphics.

Although textures here and there could be twice as definitive, the natural light and shading and atmospheres created are 11/10.

Character animations and what not, as with all Bethesda games, is their weak spot. But its completely tolerable.

At first I thought I was going to be majorly disappointed in this game, for a few reasons:

The intro, time in the vault, and first walk in the wasteland is extremely concentrated, fast, and simple.
All 1-100 skill leveling from Fallout 3 has been condensed into a singular SPECIAL/Perk Chart. It feels bottle necked and simplified for extremely casual players, and this is not what Fallout 3 was.

The first important NPC tells you to jump into power armor and allows you to control a settlement in like five minutes. The first Brotherhood of Steel guy you meet asks you to join. This is all cheesy in my eyes and I wanted drastic broad-stroke story before I received Power Armor and General status.

In 2015, all forms of entertainment feel required to pull the user in, FAST. I think this is a bi-product of that unfortunate concept.

Fortunately enough though, after a few quests and with playing on the hardest difficulty, this game is the hardcore challenge I wanted. Quick-save exists for a reason, you can get your ass kicked. On the hardest difficulty, two swipes from a Yao Guai and you're dead. And that's with good armor.

The settlement building is quite allowing, and you do not run into an anticlimactic Tony-Hawk style inventory cap. Mods and DLC will surely add tons of content to settlement building over the next two years, and even with the vanilla release content, you can accidentally spend hours building your bases.

Weapon/Armor Modding feels just right. There's complexity for sure, but it's not revolting and easy to get into.

The worst part of this game is the story. It started off so fast and I do not care about who was killed. The main character has no emotion, despite the fact that they give you to social option to be like "IM LOOKING FOR MY SON" all the time. People need to realize though, story isn't what made Fallout 3 either. It was all the systems throughout scavenging, traveling, character customization and combat challenges. THIS GAME STILL HAS ALL OF THAT.

The thing that is most controversial to me is the map size. The map size is smaller than Skyrim/Fallout 3, BUT, in their defense it is quite dense. I think we should expect map size to double with all the DLC that eventually comes out.

The game play is more of what I have loved from both Skyrim and Fallout 3. Secrets everywhere and the feeling that you have no idea what you might run into at any moment keep me glued to the screen for hours on end. Their new loot system that gives use to nearly every item further drives this desire to explore.

I did not expect to be the biggest fan of their new settlement/construction system, but it is incredibly entertaining! To see what happens when raiders try to charge your base surrounded by rocket turrets is worth the time invested! Also, the ability to designate exactly what gear your settlers and companions wear is a big plus as well.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would give this game an 8.5 but 9 make more sense than an 8 for this game.
    Pros:
+ It's huge. I'm 60hrs in, discovered 210 locations, finished over 100 quests, and there's still about 1/3 of the map I have no yet explored. Do NOT judge this game based on flat, playable area. This game is very dense.
+ The story great. You have some real tough choices to make and none of them seem like the right one. This is the best story Bethesda has had since Moirrowind.
+ Gameplay is great. The gunplay feels fine and, if you're good at FPS, you can certainly play through the game without VATS with no trouble. Even though they took away the ability to micromanage skill points, this game really takes away the need to min/max on Survival playthroughs. You can build the character you want and still make it through the most difficult content.
+ Voice acting is much imporoved. No obviously recycled voices for any characters.
+ The customization is fantastic. If you get bored with the "same weapons" that is your fault. You can mod any gun you want if you invest the perks.
+ Settlement building is a great meta that will allow someone to keep playing without re-running the same content.
+ There are tons of hidden gems that give the world a lot of character.

    Cons:
    - Companions are useless, annoying, and only good for their quests and being pack mules.
    - Game is GLITCHY. It just is. I haven't had near the bugs that some are complaining about, and none have been gamebreaking so far.
    - Graphics are not a con, but they're certainly not a pro. So I've added them here. The ambient/lighting effects are top notch. Everything else is meh to bad.
    - The radio station is basically the same thing as Fallout 3. There are thousands of useable songs from that era. WIsh they would have expanded this libary more.
    - There are a lot of obvious quality of life improvements that were overlooked. Some are so obvious I simply can't believe they would ignore them.

    Conclusion:
This game is not a 9, nor is it an 8. Everything that makes a Bethesda game so good is right here. If you're looking for something "revolutionary" however, keep looking. It will likely keep you entertained and engrossed longer than any other game on the market today. If Fallout 3 was Oblivion with guns, this is certainly Skyrim with guns. Fallout 4 is a must-buy.

You have to be careful, my friends. Because, you know the "hype"?? All that expectations, and people talking about it. Everyone looking forward for something. Everyone screaming it out loud. Well, I will NEVER board the hype train again in my life. The game itself is good, don't get me wrong. But in my opinion is not a RPG, it's looks

The game itself is good, don't get me wrong. But in my opinion is not a RPG, it's looks more like a shooter. The story not that good, the writing is shallow, the dialogues are very simple, and gives you a huge illusion of choice. The game is not immersive, there's not much life in it... you don't feel it. No emotion.

This game is good, but it DOES NOT lives for its expectations.
The hype was horrible. And I am disappointed.

Fallout 4 is undoubtedly an epic game that makes many improvements on it's predecessors. From an organic and intuitive crafting system to beautiful design, it succeeds in being great entertainment and value for money.

However, fans that were expecting a RPG in the true sense may be disappointed. It often feels more like a survival horror than a game in which you choose the story whose outcome is the sum of your actions. This does make the game often feel hollow, especially as each conversation has four 'options' that are in reality simply different ways of saying the same thing.

For me, it's a great game but misses out on it's true potential as an open-world story-creating masterpiece.

The only thing that keeps this game from a perfect 10 is the glitches that come with every Bethesda game. Almost endless game play, a vast open world to explore, and tons of ways to play, I really didn't expect this game to be as good as it is being new to the Fallout series. I was a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls and this game plays nearly identical to those.

Fallout 4 is a great game, and surprisingly better with friends nearby. I don't know what's with all these crummy negative reviews saying it's not like New Vegas, that game in itself is the worst Fallout game ever made, not to say it's bad. It's just the worst. All the NPC's are much more lifelike, especially the ghouls, the weapon customization is vast, as well as the power armor modding.Fallout 4 is a great game, and surprisingly better with friends nearby. This game gives incredible amounts of freedom and choice in what you do and how you do it. Also how those choices influence the world itself. It is an incredible experience. in a 2 week period my play time is already at 5 days.... Yes I have no life at all thanks to this game and I am still playing it almost non stop.

Best game I have ever played. Ever. No idea why it's getting some

some people complain about lack of choice in factions but I assume they have not played the game... Like at all. You'd have to be an idiot or have not played the game to see all the different factions and your opportunity to join and work with each or none etc.

The game is amazing. I just can't stop playing. The details on game are amazing, can't understand the complaints about this. Some bugs, but just funny stuff like bethesta is used to have. The world they created is huge, plenty of details, immersion, mods and settlement are amazing and better than any before created.

Fallout 3 / New Vegas but bigger and badder. Don't trust the Destiny fanboys or whoever the crap they are that create 30 accounts to try and lower the score. Forget about quests and a hardcore mode, the best part is simply exploring, and it is tough enough as is. Forget about quests and a hardcore mode, the best part is simply exploring, and it is tough enough as is. Looking for that next cache of ammo or stimpack that'll keep you alive for the next trek to an abandoned factory is absolutely enthralling. Searching for a spare lamp or circuit board left behind during the apocalypse just so you can add an attachment to your rifle? Engrossing. At anytime you might happen upon something that will end you- so save often. I really haven't seen any bugs yet 15 hours in (though I keep hearing about them?), but there is bound to be a couple. I missed the skill percentages for all about 5 minutes until my first couple level-ups and then realized how infinite the possibilities are for customization. Some things to add/change? A few perks should be tweaked to more usability (why get radiation resistance when ghoulish will make radiation heal you?) and the constantly running out of inventory room should be looked at. I believe fallout 3 or skyrim had some similar problems until they knocked the weight of some common items down. Nuka Colas? Shouldn't be 1 pound each. Etc. Otherwise, get this game before the hype is gone and experience it with the rest of us! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel cheated. Faction I chose ultimately didn't matter in in the end, and I was surprised when it ended so abruptly. Feels like more Fallout 3. If that's what you're looking for, great, if not, however... If you're a die hard Fallout fan, able to squeeze out every ounce of entertainment out of the games, then you're probably going to be satisfied. If you're looking for a deeper RPG, maybe look somewhere else, or at least wait for the price drop. Surprisingly shallow. Expand

Sometimes beautiful, a bit broken, and really quite brilliant in many places, forgiving fans will adore Fallout 4. [Christmas 2015, p.60]
  3. More Fallout 3.9 than 4, but still absolutely essential. Skyrim 2 has a hard act to follow. [Jan 2016, p.67]
