By daring to make a statement, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided succeeds in being a nuanced, mature gaming experience that pushes the medium forward in major ways.

Overall, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a remarkable experience despite the performance issues and odd multiplayer mode which is basically an excuse to incorporate microtransactions into the game. It’s one of the best stealth titles I’ve ever played and isn’t daunting or frustrating like, let’s say, Hitman.

Narrowing its scope may make purists moan, but we've never played a more enjoyable Deus Ex. [Oct 2016, p.91]

The Deus Ex series has a great storyline, and it paints a compelling, serious vision of the future that we should all consider to be a warning, given our own divisive political climate. I love how a video game can bring up a serious subject and hold up a mirror to our own times. But the ending makes it feel like this story just isn’t finished, that it’s simply a midway marker to a larger, more weighty tale with a full and satisfying ending. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided takes us only part way there, and we still want to get to those enemies in the shadows.

I'm left hoping that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided’s developers have an aggressive post-launch plan to continue the game’s story beyond its surprising endpoint. It’s a mottled cherry dropped on top of a game that otherwise makes for subtly major evolutions of action-RPG spaces, and for a world as interesting as Deus Ex’s, it would be a crime to leave it where it stands for another five years.

Mankind Divided is neither as revolutionary as Deus Ex was 16 years ago nor The Witcher III and MGSV were just last year. That doesn't change the fact that it's a brilliant Deus Ex, giving you a rich, exciting cyberpunk world, a compelling storyline within it, and the freedom to explore it almost any way you wish...In terms of both stealth and combat it's a big improvement on the last game, while it still has the deep storytelling and lavish background detail we've come to expect. If you're in a mood for a dark, sci-fi conspiracy thriller with some meaty themes, put those mirrored shades on your face and get stuck in.

Eidos Montreal needed to build on the success of Human Revolution, instead of merely trying to replicate it wrapped in difficult politics. Instead of being the revolution we so hoped it would be, it’s simply left us divided.

Talk of a disappointing ending, short gameplay, smaller game world and location were all false in my mind. A very polished game and a great sequel to the first. My only critique is that the expanded augments were unnecessary. I don't think I used a single one, but I only played through it once and the new augments could be used if you are trying to get through the game a certain way (i.e. guns blazing, stealth, no kills, etc.) All in all, I do recommend this game, don't listen to the negative hype and I hope that they decide to continue the saga. The central hub area in which you do most of your questing is wonderfully interactive, with many rooms, alleys, and airducts to explore. A lot of the side quests are quite good and well-developed. The overall theme of the game is very much in keeping with the spirit of Deus Ex, cyber-augmented superagent bypassing obstacles with force or stealth, and also having to deal with deep philosophical quandaries about the nature of post-human existence.

The game keeps the wonky energy system from the original game, so performing non-lethal takedowns consumes energy, and you'll probably have to pop a biocell if you want to chain multiple takedowns. The story could be thought of as more prosaic than the usual save the world stuff, since this time you're mostly just stopping terrorists. I don't consider these good or bad, just design decisions that could be controversial to some.

The bad is the terrible mapping system. Instead of just showing you where the target is on a map, the game gives you waypoints that might be good or awful. Some of the multistory levels become quite complicated, and the waypoints can be completely unhelpful for showing you where you're supposed to be going, so the alternatives are to explore every section of the huge areas until you find the correct path, or to look online where you're supposed to go. Also bad is that the game crashed fairly often for me, about half a dozen times. One of those crashes was a systemic issue that required an extensive workaround. The physics for dragging bodies could have really used some work, as it's clunky and frustrating, especially for something as time-sensitive as hiding a body in a stealth game. There are several gameplay mechanics that are incredibly irritating. Your character gets stopped all the time to have his papers checked by a police officer. It's a little cutscene to show you how prejudiced against augs the police are. It stopped getting cute after first half dozen times it happened. Deus Ex: HR was a 9/10 game for me. This was a 7/10. It's a pretty good game that is dragged down by questionable design decisions.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
