This game is absolutely spectacular. I am currently on my second playthrough having beat it early in 2022. Unfortunately it didn't sell well upon release due to the awful review site ign giving it a 5. It became a sleeper hit though. Probably the best horror game ever made.

"Isolation" is simply the best Alien game ever made. Developed by The Creative Assembly, it's a slow-paced survival horror title that plays like a first-person Dead Space. Set 15 years after the original 1979 movie, the game introduces Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley who was played by Sigourney Weaver in the films. In "Isolation", Amanda is given a chance to learn about Ellen's disappearance by boarding a space station that contains a flight recorder with vital info. To her dismay, a deadly xenomorph roams its darkened corridors as well as homicidal maniacs and murderous androids. One of the best aspects of the game is its design. The look and feel of Ridley Scott's Alien has been totally re-created complete with Jerry Goldsmith's iconic musical score.

The gameplay and scenario recalls Bioshock, but the trial-and-error segments will probably frustrate and annoy some players. This is a stealth-based game that can be quite difficult due to the unpredictable nature of the alien's movements. It will sometimes pop up in places you're not quite expecting. But you can use a motion tracker to calm your fears and use scattered materials to form helpful items. Eventually, you'll also get access to a revolver (useful against thugs) and a flamethrower which helps keep the alien at bay. The game is filled with highly detailed environments with expansive areas to explore. Backstory can be found in computer notes and numerous ID tags can be collected (to unlock an achievement). However, the constant threat of the alien makes the whole experience tense and skin-crawling.

Overall, Alien: Isolation is an effective survival horror game. It may not be everyone due to the slow pace and trial-and-error moments, but it's a love letter to the first movie. Franchise fans will find it to be a good companion piece to the films despite its flaws. So if you like Outlast and Resident Evil 7, but have yet experienced "Isolation", then you should try to this next. I'd give it an 8.1 out of 10.

Such a great game with great graphics. It's a shame Sega dropped such a banger of a game and didn't make another. Would love to see Sega Europe do more considering Alien Isolation was released in 2014. This had an amazing story and great gameplay. Definitely challenging at times but very good

Caveat: not only do I feel this might appeal more to people who grew up with the original Alien, I also know that, be it by lack of attraction to the genre or over-exposure, some are completely ‘imune’ to the feeling these types of games aim to invoke. I think this review might not resonate much with those folks.

I love survival horror games. There’s nothing quite like turning the lights off at night, putting on your headphones and letting a dark game take over your mental space. However, as much as I like this type of games, and some are successful in creating a tense atmosphere that deeply immerses me, until I tried Alien: Isolation I had never played a game that made me feel hunted, on edge, and literally afraid to step out of a locker. It’s hard to describe how effective this game is at preying on your projected fear: everything comes together to create a terrifying experience, not because you’re afraid of what you can see, but because you’re afraid of what you can’t. You’re never 100% certain how close the danger is to you, and you know you’re hopeless if it catches you. The sense of relief you feel in those few moments you know you’re safe, or when you find a save point, is something so many games aspire to, but so few are actually able to achieve.

Technically speaking, the sound stands above everything else: this was one of the most accomplished audio experiences I’ve had in a video game, stretched to near perfection as long as you’re wearing headphones. But this is far from being the only strong technical aspect. I felt the visuals were quite good for the time, and especially liked how well they managed to capture the retro sci-fi feel and dark atmosphere of the original movie. The stealth mechanics, backed by competent AI, are quite satisfying. Most of the puzzles are logical and pleasant to engage with. There’s a decent challenge curve throughout, one that forces you to reassess your strategies as you move forward. And there’s a welcoming variety of tools at your disposal, meaning you always have a few solid solutions for any given situation.

This isn’t to say there aren’t downsides. The main one to me is how gameplay feels. It was definitely not the most fluid experience, and to make matters worse, I played it on Xbox when only 30FPS was available (this should now be at least mitigated by the FPS boost). Also, I felt the game dragged on for a bit longer than it should have. Finally, there’s a particular moment when you gain access to a certain item - if you played it you know what that is -, which to me removed a big chunk of the tension and fear I experienced before that, because it led me to face most of the remaining encounters with the notion that I could be in full control of the situation, even if temporarily.

To me, these were the major negative aspects of what was otherwise a truly enjoyable horror playthrough. I had never played a game that made me dread the possibility of death, not because I couldn’t reload my save, but because of how emotionally ‘draining’ each death felt. By solely focusing on a realistic scenario (as in not entrenched in supernatural occurrences), Alien: Isolation was able to incite a level of intensity against which all my future survival horror experiences will be measured. 100% recommended if you’re a fan of the genre, especially if you can play it at 60FPS.

But what's bad about the game is the gameplay itself. The artificial intelligence of our enemies (including someone else's) is very weak and predictable, and the plot is stupid - especially the ending. Plus, even now the game is being sold for fabulously expensive money with all the DLC. She's clearly not worth it. You can play at once if you are a fan of the first Alien movie. The rest can be passed. Glory to Ukraine!

    The ultimate Alien game.

Try it if you are looking for: A great setting, fidelity to the film, constant persecution, use your creativity to get out of danger, face the perfect organism and more lore.

Avoid it if you hate: A new but unremarkable story, hide and be strategic, a story that moves slowly and uses limited resources.

This game really transports you to the Alien universe. It may make the game too hard, but the xenomorphs are as terrifying, intelligent and fast as they should be. On the other hand, the game is longer than necessary, which can end up in tiresome and repetitive gameplay, but the experience is still there, and what an incredible survival horror experience this is.

    SOUND

Much as expected from a survival/horror experience. An eerie atmosphere with plenty of sudden bumps to keep you on your toes. Most pose real threats and shouldn't be ignored. Alien noises are spot on from the films.

    GRAPHICS

Lots of detail with excellent smoke effects and lightning. Isolation is one of the best looking games so far this gen.

    STORY

Objectives can feel tedious at times but it maintains a fair level of urgency from beginning to end. There's plenty of easter eggs for fans of the film series.

    ENTERTAINMENT

This game deserves more than an 8, I'd rate it 8.9 if possible. Death seemed unavoidable at times when being hunted by the alien but using different tools and strategies to survive never got old. Creative Assembly developed a game that is true to the survival/horror genre but also to the spirit of the film series that inspired the product.
