Thrilling from start to finish, Alien: Isolation is the game fans of the franchise have long been waiting for. [Issue#255, p.57]

The highest compliment that you can pay Creative Assembly’s uncompromising, nerve-plucking and lengthy entry in the Alien canon is that even without any prior knowledge of its source material, Alien: Isolation is superb.

Though it's not flawless, Isolation is certainly one of the best games in the franchise, and I'm damn impressed with what The Creative Assembly has managed to pull off.

Alien: Isolation is an incredibly beautiful game whose regular boring patches are almost always countered with bloodcurdling tension or mind-blowing spectacle. But you should only try it out if you’re a big sci-fi fan and if you have nothing against doing engineering tasks, like in Dead Space. And of course, if you don’t want to miss all of the references, you should at least check out Alien the movie first, if not the entire quadrilogy.

For fans of the Alien series, the films, books, comics, and every other form of entertainment imaginable, Alien: Isolation is simply a must-play, given that it fits so well into the storyline that it nearly seems to be a chapter in it's own right.

Alien: Isolation is worth experiencing, but at the same time feels like lost potential.

Someday, someone is going to make an incredible Alien video game that checks every box. But, sadly, Isolation is not it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alien Isolation is an impressive take on the 70s film "Alien" with next gen quality visuals on last gen tech, a sense of true horror, terrifyingly simple but extremely difficult A.I., and if you got the Nostromo Edition, you're in for a real treat.

You play as Amanda Ripley "daughter of Ellen Ripley" and a strong female lead. The story has you along in a decollate mall ship paradise thing in Jupiter's Orbit know only as Sevastopol. Sevastopol is now a home of the Xenomorph and the rest of the crazed survivors. You must go through many tricky and interesting puzzles that will test your patience and fear factor level. Oh and this game is not meant for the impatient because if you make one wrong move you'll either get killed or go through an insane attempt at escaping. Don't bother escaping from the Alien. You'll get caught up to because the thing is fast AF and its impossible to kill. Don't even friggin' run in this game. That's how sensitive the A.I.'s hearing is in this game is. The A.I. is very advanced in this game and difficulty is definitely on the hard end. The game is about 10 hours long and you can't go once at anytime without dying unless you're going for the achievement.

The scenery feels like were something when down hard. The atmosphere and music is tense and terrifying keeping you on your toes making sure you don't die and you will hallucinate plenty of times thinking the Xenomorph is lurking in your bedroom right now in fact. The game maybe a single place to go kind of game but the game's environments are actually more open than what anyone expected. Most of the stuff that's blocked off are available to be unlocked after you've got the right tool for the job. Heck the stuff you find later on. You can go back to the beginning of the game and unlock the blocked off areas. I haven't even found what's back in the beginning yet because story.

If you got the Nostromo Edition (like I got), you play as the original cast. You start in the scene after they discuss the Alien and you have to close off the area without getting killed. I don't know how it ends because I keep getting killed.

    Pros:
    Excellent Story
    Advanced A.I.
    Amazing Graphical Detail
    Memorable Characters
Just the right amount of difficulty
    Perfect Movie Tie-In game

The atmosphere is dense, the sound design, sfx and music is not only absolutely perfect for the environment and overall feel, it sits tightly with what we're used to from the movies. Graphics are overall pretty good on the XB1. Lovely grain and warming fx, mostly good textures and it's possible to investigate or read many of little details on the Sevastopol to your hearts content. The alien AI works great and the danger of it lurking arund somewhere makes me feel like I'm 15 years old again, playing Resident Evil 1 for the first time. It's a scary game without being too relient on jump scares. It's what's possible, that's scary, not what is actually happening. Well, that too, actually. It's a fantastic game - not only because we finally got the Alien game we always wanted (and deserved), but also because the game itself is just so good. It combines joy and terror so magnificently. Well done, CA and Sega. A certain Randy Pitchford must be weeping into his moneybags right now. :-P Expand

    Gameplay

What you have here is a scary as hell survival game heavily influenced by the original Alien movie. It is very slow paced and rewards you for playing stealthily, although I wish the Alien would leave you alone sometimes if you were playing the game well enough to convince it that you aren't even there.

I love the feel of the game in that it takes me back to the style of Super Metroid or even the newer Shadow Complex games in that you start off very weak and work your way up by finding new tools and being able to access areas that you previously couldn't by using them.

It is quite possibly the best Alien game that has been made so far and even though it has it's flaws, such as a not so great and somewhat android/human combat heavy 2nd third of the game which I can't really talk about without spoiling the story, and a somewhat disappointing ending, it's the first step towards more great Alien games. (Hopefully).

    The Graphics and Atmosphere

One thing that I can't get over is that it's by all means not the greatest looking game out there, but the attention to detail, the lighting and the atmosphere is masterfully executed and feels so true to the first Alien movie.

For the first section of the game I was so terrified just by the atmosphere that I was struggling to play through the game at an average pace and this was before the game even became dangerous. Once the alien came in (which is stunningly detailed and looks incredible) I was often too terrified to even move.

Unfortunately the game does have some technical hiccups though, and this is mainly in regards to framerate. The game does a decent job of feeling smooth most of the time but sometimes during cutscenes and when you cause fire or explosions, it does cause the game to drop a little, but not enough to break immersion. I think the game could have used a little more optimization and dropped the Kinect features which just make the game even harder to play in favor of making the game run smoother and a little antialiasing couldn't have hurt either.

    Final Thoughts

As I said before, I see this as a great first step into the future of Alien games, which hopefully remain scary but at least let you defend yourself against Aliens (by that I mean being able to kill them with enough effort) but this is a very good game in it's own right. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves the Alien franchise and wants to play a game that is clearly made by people who also love it too.

I am giving this game an 8 out of 10.
