MW3 though is very frustrating, it lacks so much that we now expect in a FPS games, I mean really simple things such as spawning, maps and weapons. The biggest thing that I'm disappointed about MW3 is the maps. Those days of choosing whether to sniper or creep round out flanking are well and truly gone, the maps are designed for just one way to play and that's run around like a headless chicken and shoot!! 0 tactics and no sense of you working as a team. The maps also show no kind of creativity, there's nothing new that we haven't seen before. On the plus side, the campaign is just what I wanted and enjoyed the final part to the story. And that's why I've award it a 5, but like most games this day it's all about the online experience, and quite frankly it just doesn't cut it, there's a bigger dog now in my opinion which is laying a path for the future for FPS's and that's Battlefield 3. It has everything, huge maps, the opportunity to make weapon semi auto to automatic, a selection of vehicles, realistic damage and the real sense that you are in a real battle. I applaud EA stepping up their game and for once making them serious contenders as king of FPS. MW3 I fear will not be taken out of it's case as much as the other previous games and I'm gutted and feel rather let down :( Expand

When the Modern Warfare 3 commercial includes WW3, I expect full scale front lines war, like World at War. I wasn't expecting tactical teams going street to street following tanks. This is not WW3.

The multiplayer is exactly the same as Modern warfare 2 and Black Ops. Perks, Unlockable guns, and killstreaks are all apart of the multiplayer. The only difference is that we get a new mode called survival. Survival is the only reason, in my opinion, to get this game. It is fun. The only thing is it is two player. It Would be better with more than two players.

I give this game a 5 because of the lackluster single-player, the copycat multiplayer (but fun Survival). I really hope that this Franchise does not turn into another Madden.

I have to say up front, that I'm not a big campaign guy. The campaign might be excellent, but I don't buy these games for the single-player. My ratio of single to multi player is probably around 2:200. But that's just the problem, the multiplayer is awful. Rather than being innovative, IW decided to stick with their same upgrade system to enjoy perks and weapon addons. Say what you will about Black Ops, but it did revolutionize multiplayer "earnings" with COD cash that was useful in skipping boring sights, weapon addons, etc. so you could get right to your preferences without waiting until level 70. This game goes with the same boring method of earning your way to everything, something that just won't peak my interest after the honeymoon period.

We are still stuck with the same engine, that pretty much makes it easy for people to die yet harder to kill. I am still baffled at the fact that with such a complex dynamic database, I am still playing maps I don't want to. Why am I still playing with idiots that barely touch my level of FPS skill? Is IW really still having trouble trying to fix multiplayer? I know this isn't IW because bad matchmaking was why I quit playing Black Ops. I just cannot understand why I still have to be placed on a team with idiots. Is it really so hard to match skill level?

Spawning seems as worse as ever. Can no one figure a decent algorithm for spawning already? Are we still stuck in 2002? At least place more spawn zones. The entire map should be spawn zones so that the usual "furthest from enemies" algorithm will work better. It certainly doesn't help that your maps are like a Swiss cheese of obstacles. Imagine a maze. Now imagine all vertical lines removed. This is what these maps are playing like. I could hide behind one half wall for security, but I'm completely open from 3 other angles. What's the point?

Could someone PLEASE work with committees to get this game right. I would gladly fly out on my own dime to be apart of a committee because these things are so easy to detect and fix before you release anything. You need review and QA committees because this game is just awful when it comes to so many factors. I want the product to succeed. I want people to get back what they are paying for in quality gaming. I fear that if you keep releasing this stuff without checking in with others, you will eventually lose your franchise to a competitor. I remember when IW used to listen to its people when Bungie didn't. This is EXACTLY what happened with Halo.

That aside, the main reason that this game got a 5 is the story mode. if the online play was better, i would have no issues giving this game a higher rating; the fact is that the online is unacceptable. the re-spawn algorithm/coding is quite possibly the worst that i have ever seen, in any FPS. the graphics are poor, the game engine is recycled, and the audio is garbage. I have enjoyed CoD since the beginning, but this game feels stale. The movement animations are still fluid and crisp, but the entire game platform is simply a rinse and repeat. This series peaked at the original modern warfare and has been slowly declining since. the campaign has the feel of last-nights-leftovers, but in this day and age, originality and creativity are gone. As for the online play, there is always a xbox error, host migration, glitch, etc, that is hindering the online. if you want a better campaign, buy this. if you want better online. buy battlefield. I wasn't expecting a whole new experience, but there is nothing that I can point to and say "This is really cool.", or " x problem from the last games seems to be much better." The spawn system and the quick scoping, which seems to be much more reliable in this iteration, takes you out of the game and results in squashing any atmosphere. I don't see any improvements for those who actually enjoy sniping. It is still mostly geared to "run and gunners" which results in more camping than usual. The game play has lost it's novelty after this many attempts and has been reduced to points grinding sessions instead of actual fun. IW is going to need some major kick a$$ DLC.
The last thing I will comment on is the Elite product. This is wrong in so many ways. This reeks of a project that was hijacked and perverted by nothing but greed. Will I still play this game? Yes. But it will be a lot easier to break for other games .

The campaign is more of the same. You play multiple characters as you make your way through a story of what can only be described as "sensory overload" of having to move from point A to point B while shooting pockets of seemingly endless spawning bad guys. Long story short, I got the feeling of been there, done that. Even de ja' vu at times. Story won't blow your mind; however, it does do it's best to tie up loose ends in this trilogy. If you loved the previous two games, you will like this. Can be a little "samey, samey". You know, like Michael Cera's movie characters. Seen him in one movie and that is what you can expect in every single movie you will ever see him in. The multiplayer is more of the same, as well. If you like the previous games, you will like this one; but, may experience some burnout if you were on your way there in previous installments. Would be rated higher as an expansion pack or dlc.

All of the campaign missions have a 'follow me' design to them , even the stealth missions do not let you diverge from your 'follow me' leader, who strings you along every mission in some form or another.

The game seems to improve on the multi-player I am accustomed to as well bringing the balance MW2 needed as well is getting core mechanics right which is what Black Ops needed; but where the game falls flat for me is the maps. I don't like the new direction of the maps they all seem very similar and feel like an ant tunnel. They just seem like mindless running about with no strategy or structure and there seems to too many routes and entrances to any position and there is a serious lack of the verticality MW2 maps brought to the table. The spawns only exacerbate the situation and are at times extremely poor. For some reason they also seem to have backtracked on the scaling; poor scaling of objects, buildings, doors, and character models can be frustrating. The dislike of almost all the maps is an irredeemable factor for me and no amount of map packs can fix that which is very unfortunate because the game could of been the best one yet. I know Black Ops was a little slow in the beginning and it sped up over a couple months, but the alternation between multiplayer developers shows that they are unwilling to share their experiences with each other to help the franchise evolve. The maps don't vary in size at all like Black Ops did and they seem a bit small. The spawning points in the multiplayer are erratic and I usually end up dying within two seconds of respawning once or twice a match. The map size also contributes to dying immediately after a kill because of how close the next enemy is. I have never played a Battlefield game before, but I might since MW3 has seemed to be a bust. The reason for a mediocre score is because the game has potential and can be updated to fix all of the flaws, but it will take a miracle to turn this game into a 10/10. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't like smearing a game like this. But honestly, early previews suggested nothing exciting about this game, and the biggest aspect of its appeal to me was its story; and while I have enjoyed my time with it playing with my friends, and I have a modicum of fun with it, I certainly agree that there is nothing here which hasn't been done before, specifically in Modern Warfare 2. This game needs to be the last time Activision rests on its laurels, lest next year be the Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock/ Tony Hawk Ride of this series. People say its the Madden of shooters, and this years is that in spades. While I haven't finished Campaign yet, so far its been a largely predictable bit of set pieces, retreading the same old gameplay "variety" we've had since Modern Warfare is a bit trite. I started the story on veteran and have had little difficulty at all moving through it. The story seems ridiculous the more I think of it -- the notion that all of the world would go to war over one American body found at a terrorist attack? We couldn't disavow this guy? All the footage of the four OTHER guys, one of which, at least, Russian? (Don't get me wrong, I felt that sequence in the airport was very powerful, and a great device for the story, and the consequences were handled well enough too. I felt something seeing suburbs burning as Ramirez.) But I digress. So I will say lastly for the story so far is that the sequence which has been most controversial so far, was not at all necessary, and is rendered less effective even for how out of place it is, as there are no other children in the story, or any where. So I feel this fell flat, to be frank, like they only included it to A) Try and cram drama forcibly down our throat, or B) Tried to cram controversy down our throat. This game plays solidly, and has plenty of bro worthy moments, but no more or less than any other Call of duty ever has in its online play. THis is fine. And the fact that millions have bought it, thats fine too. But it is sad, in a way. As you see I feel this game was mostly phoned in, and if you feel like Professional reviewers were paid off , I feel similarly. The spec ops mode is unorginal, but I had fun with MW2s, and I enjoy survival, as well. I will continue to play Multiplayer, just to hang and compete with friends. But I will not pay another dime for dlc, I will not get Elite. The changes I can note are only two fold: Grenade launchers don't kill in one shot, and strike packages. This was overhyped. Halo 2, was hyped about right, maybe a lil bit over. But not as much. Expand

I guess the problem that I have with Call of Duty MW3 is that the developers had a chance to create a truly great game. But instead they chose to play it safe and only tweak a few things here and there, which in the end amounted to a hole lot of nothing. I've said you can tell that someone else made this game and that's 100% true. I doubt Activation will say that Vince Zampella and Jason West (the creators of the franchise) played that big of a part in the success of the Call of Duty but when you fire them and 40 other employees quit because of that. Out of a studio that had around 50 employees in it to begin with, that doesn't leave a lot of people left that helped create the great Call of Duty's of past. Then Activation thought that after rebuilding Infinity Ward and adding the a brand new studio in which they just created called Sledgehammer games, to finish what the original Infinity Ward started would be ok. No it wasn't and shame on them for thinking it was. Now I don't hate COD MW3 but its defiantly not my first choice when it comes to game that I own. Expand

When news broke out about the whole Infinity Ward / Activision fallout over the firing of Vince Zampella and Jason West, I became very skeptical about the future of Modern Warfare 3. After playing through the campaign on Veteran and giving the online multiplayer a week of play, I must report that the skepticism was well deserved. This is by far the easiest COD I have played on VeteranWhen news broke out about the whole Infinity Ward / Activision fallout over the firing of Vince Zampella and Jason West, I became very skeptical about the future of Modern Warfare 3. After playing through the campaign on Veteran and giving the online multiplayer a week of play, I must report that the skepticism was well deserved. This is by far the easiest COD I have played on Veteran difficulty, taking a mere 6 hours to complete from beginning to end, and feels more like an interactive roller coaster ride than anything else, shooting popup targets as you go.
Multiplayer is where longevity comes into play for an FPS, and to be perfectly blunt, this is what I was most pissed off about. The fun to be had in multiplayer is evident, but the feeling that you were ripped off soon sinks in when you realize this is pretty much the same game we were playing 2 years ago with a new paint job. The new killstreaks aren't as enjoyable to play around with, all the "new" perks and weapons are just retweaks of existing COD staples (even the deathstreaks and weapon perks are just conditional perks mostly from older games). Compounding the distaste is the horrible map designs and spawn locations. The game launched with over 10 maps to play with, but the fact that most of the maps are similar in confinement and lack any real creativity is a shame.
Weapon imbalances are abound, which will hopefully be rectified via patches ala BlackOps. Some weapons such as shotguns and some smg and AR's are completely outclassed in everyway by others.

Gone are all the stats menus that came in-game with BlackOps, instead you are relegated to using Call of Duty Elite, an app for your XBox that employs clan connectivity and allows you to see in-depth stats, and of course if you want the real meat and potatoes for this app you need to pay an annual fee. The new highlight of the multiplayer is Kill Confirmed, a mode of deathmatch that tries to discourage camping by forcing players to gather tags off downed enemies in order to score. The only problem is that it actually employs camping as well, as many individuals will use the tags as bait. This is not a problem of the game itself, but the community at large who wish increase their personal kill to death ratio than actually contribute to a winning game. In conclusion, I would have felt much more comfortable paying $40 for what feels more like an expansion pack than full-fledged new game, but at the current $60 retail value you are paying too much. And considering the fact that Activision will be releasing maps packs often for this game, over the course of the year you are looking to spend atleast $90 for this game alone, even more if you are a subscriber to the COD Elite service.

And even provides an ok campaign which sadly is extremely short. But in my opinion MW3 was nothing more than a modern warfare 2 expansion pack that at best should have been sold at no more than $39.99 if that. The graphics, while decent, were slightly up from MW2 and of course for the battlefield 3 faithful they will say its no where close which is absolutely true. But of course graphics is not the main draw for any game... what good is graphics if the game just sucks? MW3 does provide a decent balanced multiplayer which to me is the most balanced to date. The lag is minimal and the net code seems to be great with awesome hit detection.. BUT there are some weapon balance issues that need to be work on with a patch. The campaign is very predictable but does keep the pace decent to keep you entertain but dont expect any OMG moments. The campaign is also short which if you are a average player expect to breeze through with about 4-5 hours of gameplay.. longer on harder difficultites maybe of course. Bugs were minimal throughout my playthrough so it was a tightly knit experience with maybe some AI issues here and there but nothing out the ordinary. Speaking on AI in MW3.. nothing has really changed.. constant spawn until you move up or clear an objective but this is not a tactical game.. its basically an extreme rail shooter.. and it does it well. So with that being said.. if you go into this game just expecting a decent fun time with great multiplayer moments with friends you may be pleased.. IF you fell for the marketing hype and the "biggest launch in video game history" you will most likely be disappointed when you pop in the game and have a play-through. Its not a bad game at all.. but its nothing innovative. It is a modern warfare 2 expansion pack for 59.99. Kinda leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I say it deserves a decent.. good.. old.. average.. run of the mill.. 5. Expand

Don't get me wrong though, aside from this it is still a great game. I have fun playing, but of the last 4 COD games, my favorite is still Black Ops personally. Overall I can't help but feel that this game should have been held off for a year giving the people developing this game more time to improve and innovate the game and breath new life in to the modern warfare franchise and ment that you don't feel your playing the same old game with just a different story. It throws nothing shocking at you like "No Russian" or your guy dying in a Nuclear blast. The new characters it introduces are forgettable and the plot just has a predictable, flat and sudden end. I wouldn't complain if I had only spent like 29.99 for this down the road. But this isn't worth forking over $60. Now I have to wait until my next payday to purchase Skyrim.

Every map feels like the same maze with different paint. From an objective-based perspective, you spend more time navigating the maze to reach an objective than you do assaulting or defending it.

Much hate for bringing back Quickscoping. I know the fanbois love it, and they can feel like "real men" by pwning somebody with a sniper rifle, but it ruins a multiplayer game for me. In 3 hours of gameplay, I was quickscoped from across the map 9 times. A sniper rifle should be made to function as a sniper rifle, plain and simple. And don't get me started on the wannabes running around with the sniper rifle like an assault rifle. It should be nigh impossible to charge an objective with a scoped rifle and take out 4 defenders using submachine guns. But, in their infinite wisdom, the developers have catered to the fanbois again, and made qs even easier than before.

The graphics are... eh. Nothing eye-catching, but nothing horrible, either. It's just standard, run-of-the-mill scenery. Can't say I hate it, but wouldn't say I like it, either.

The lack of realism is offensive. Landing 9 shots from ANY gun should drop anyone but the Juggernaut, but this isn't the case. I can't count the number of times I've emptied a clip from the MP5 into someone, only to have them spin 180 degrees and drop me with one or two shots from their assault rifle.

The number of killstreak rewards bombarding the playing field is incredibly stupid. Running the Support class, you continue gaining your killstreaks THROUGH YOUR DEATHS. While this seems great in the beginning, it gets old quite quickly. You are constantly on someone's radar, and when you aren't, you are being hammered by Reaper rockets or other high-explosives.

The sound is horrible. Even running turtlebeaches, 9 times out of 10 you can't hear someone sprinting up behind you for a knife kill.

Anyway, there is much more I could complain about, including lag issues, matchmaking, and lack of originality, but I won't. Suffice to say, I'll probably make this my LAST Call of Duty purchase.

Spec Ops has been upgraded into Survival mode. It is a very fun and is a great part of the overall game but i feel it could of easily have been put into Modern Warfare 2 as downloadable content. There are also the Spec Ops missions. These missions are built from the campaign. These also could be downloadable content. Multiplayer is the same as Cod 4 but with improved guns and killstreaks. You also have the introduction of Strike Packages which is the best addition to multiplayer. The maps on the other hand are dull and boring and are not very exciting to play. The Graphics and Gameplay are the same as previous Modern Warfare's. With the introduction of Battlefield 3's Frostbite 2 engine, Modern Warfare 3 is way behind the other game engines. The weapon proficiencies that you unlock by ranking the weapon up, make the broken weapons more broken. For instance, the Type 95 is a burst fire weapon that normally only takes two out of the 3 bullets to connect for a kill, now put the two attachments proficiency on with a red dot and a grenade launcher and you have an unstoppable class. The AK47 takes two bullets to kill but is supposedly offset but its huge recoil and horrible accuracy, now use the less recoil proficiency with a red dot and you can gun down a whole team without emptying a clip. The online multiplayer in this series has always been really fun, or so I thought, I've become a bit older since this series started and not every friend I used to play with is available all the time to play this game with me. What I found out is that I can't stand playing this game alone without another friend with me, when I run around and kill the other players, I get no satisfaction, even if I get a killstreak. I need one of my friends to talk to, about anything that pops up in our minds, I love it when we trashtalk the other players, and get them frustrated, or just trashtalking eachother. It gives me a thrill, but when I play alone, I hate it like the pest itself.
Which I find wierd, since I got no problem playing Halo Reach or BF3 online all alone, of course these games also becomes better when played with friends, but I can still play them alone.
MW3 is a great game to play with friends because of its fast paced action and killstreaks, but is overall a really bad game. I give it a 5 because it's actually fun to play with friends, but no good game should require me playing with friends to make it a fun experience, playing with friends should be an extra fun bonus.
If Halo and Battlefield can do it, so should MW3 be able to do it.

I spent many hours playing Modern Warfare 2, and all bugs, exploits, and glitches aside, it played and handled well. With Black Ops, the game felt more balanced, but the horrendous lag and bad hit detection really took away from that experience. In that instance, I felt Black Ops was a step back. However, after playing Modern Warfare 3, it's more like a complete jump back. The first glaring problem is the lag is worse than Black Ops. I've literally lost count of the number of time I have shot at enemies, have them turn, and be killed in one quick shot. Players jump around maps, freezing, shots not registering, etc. These are simple mechanics that worked well in MW2 and seem to be broken in MW3. Apart from the lag and hit detection problems, the spawn system is terrible. This can at least be fixed, but it just screams poor programming when something so trivial and basic has major problems. The formula for Call of Duty is simple and proven. However, whether it be rushed deadlines or just poor finishing, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games (a cringe-worthy name of a studio) seem to have lost the vision that the Modern Warfare series once had. CoD4 and MW2 are some of my favourite games ever. However, MW3 seems to have set the series back. This game is average and honestly not worth the praise and revenue it has received. Disappointing in many ways. It was hard to get through the game as it felt as if it were the same game over. It's more of a MW2.1 Even if you enjoyed the previous games, it's more of a burned out feeling at this point as it does nothing to improve on older games.

The Special Ops aren't anything ground breaking, and survival is a welcomed addition, but after a few games of both you'll grow tired of them quickly. That leaves the us with the multiplayer, this is the bread and butter of CoD games. This is where you will spend countless hours fragging friends, and foes alike. The only problem is that MW3's multiplayer is arguably worse then previous installments overall. Sure, some things they do tight, such as the perk rebalancing, and gun leveling, but gameplay-wise it is a step backwards. Spawns are bad at best, maps aren't memorable, after 3 installments they still have failed to give us a proper system link option and private game options, which are vital to competitive CoD, they did away with the dive from Black Ops. I feel that if you really are a fan of what CoD is all about, the multiplayer, then you might-as-well stick with Black Ops, as it already has quality maps, very polished gameplay, and an overall better multiplayer experience. I have played every CoD video game since the first. Once call of duty 4 came out it was a complete game changer, but since then, not much else has changed. Modern Warfare 3 promised so much and barley lived up to it at all. Starting off with the Single player, it felt extremely lacking of a solid story or even relevance to the game, some may disagree with me on that point but in my opinionI have played every CoD video game since the first. Starting off with the Single player, it felt extremely lacking of a solid story or even relevance to the game, some may disagree with me on that point but in my opinion it didn't live up to the current day first person shooter campaigns. If you take a game like Modern warfare 3 and compare it to other first person shooters like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Battlefield 3, Rage and Resistance 3 the campaign just doest do the game justice. Now on to the Spec Ops. Yes it is a great addition to the game, it is basically the game mode that makes up for no cooperative campaign. I find some of these fun but on the other hand i feel that they were something that activation just threw in due to lack of creativity. It was new and innovative in MW2 but i found it rather old in MW3. They were just boring and didn't really add much to the game unless your trying to get all of the achievements/trophies in the game. Now onto the point that most people get the game for, multiplayer. Yes the multiplayer is fun and addicting but theres nothing really new to the multiplayer. The multiplayer feels rather lacking of the main point, but people will keep buying this game no matter how much they change or add to the game. Its just the same every year, just like the Madden series, i just can't justify people buying a new Call of Duty game every November. Maybe if they just took a break and released a game every 2 or so years they would actually have time to make it a fun and worthwhile game. With modern warfare 3 i felt that you were just buying a new map pack and some new guns. Overall i think this game really disappointed and didn't live up to the hype just as its predecessors have done. But it is another game and fun to a certain point, I am not bashing this game in any way shape or form, just giving my honest review. This game is just rather simple and bland. I can't see it living up to other modern games released this winter. Hope this review helped!! Expand

As a game MW3 isn't bad. I enjoyed the campaign a good bit. It was fun to play and even though it had all sorts of cheesy Michael Bay explosions and action I really enjoyed it. Big deal. Weapon levels? Who cares. Sounds like IW's version of the Madden hit stick. And as for being the most balanced CoD yet, I say boo. Ever hear of the Type 95 IW? Someone dropped the ball on balancing that thing out. Essentially MW3 is nothing more then a really big expansion pack for Modern Warfare 2. I mean if you really really liked MW2 then this is the game for you, but after awhile don't you get tired of the same old thing? Everything is more or less the same. I hate to break it to you Activision but Battlefield has for sure set up shop in your town. And they mean to get bigger and better. I suggest you stop milking this cow and start with some major effin overhaul of your flagship game or you're going to have another Guitar hero on your hands. Yes, a lot of people will still be playing MW3 and they will buy and play the next CoD but rest assured the movement has begun. The world is catching on to you and it will only get worse from here on out unless you do something about it. As for Call of Duty Elite: what a waste of money. Go online and do your research and you'll learn even more then what that damn thing has to offer. P.S. Spec ops is actually pretty fun but it's one of those thing once you finish it you'll probably never go back to it. Expand

Since Modern Warfare 2 was easily worthy of a 9 or 10, it follows that the successor earns about half of that. The inclusion of a new character withSince Modern Warfare 2 was easily worthy of a 9 or 10, it follows that the successor earns about half of that. The campaign's length has been cut to approximately half the length of the previous game, most of which is recycled and formulaic content, including the obligatory stealth sections that account for far too much time in an already short game. The inclusion of a new character with an interesting back story only highlights how the player is held hostage to the story. As with the No Russian mission of MW2, control is but an illusion. The player is given a gun during a flashback sequence and allowed the opportunity to attempt to change the existing canon - logically, of course, this sequence is impossible and subsequently pointless, burning more precious minutes of a painfully brief story. The amount of time the player controls their character versus the amount spent unable to control their character (through enforced actions, such as being tossed around by an explosion, vehicle rides or plot sections) means that calling the campaign 5 hours is perhaps being overly generous. Compare to other titles on the shelf, such as The Elder Scrolls V, Dark Souls or Deus Ex Human Revolution, and this is an unforgivable offence.
Spec Ops, the glorious co-op element of MW2, makes a return, although it is notably shorter and considerably easier than the previous iteration. The insult to the developers' lack of creativity comes when you not only run an obstacle course akin to the first Spec Ops level of MW2, but when a later mission involves running the same course in reverse. Spec Ops is helped by the inclusion of Survival mode, which continues the trend started by Gears of War 2's Horde mode and further continued with Halo ODST and Left 4 Dead. This mode allows the player to fight increasingly difficult waves of enemies across the multiplayer maps. Jarringly, unlike the other games just mentioned, both Spec Ops Missions and Survival modes are still limited to two players, either splitscreen or online. Given that Horde Mode in Gears 2 is responsible for the resurgence of the mode's popularity (which could be traced as far back as Unreal Tournament 2004), it is perplexing that Modern Warfare 3 fails to push past a simple two-player limitation. The era of two-player co-op, without justification (Army of Two, for instance, had a legitimate justification for its restriction), should have ended with the four controller ports on the Xbox or at least the emergence of viable online console play. The third option for the game is the multiplayer. Other than a slight adjustment to killstreaks, the only difference between Modern Warfare 2 and 3 in this regard is the cosmetic change of new maps and a few new weapons. Even the two game modes touted by marketing are nothing more than variations of team deathmatch. Team Defender is essentially Halo 3's Juggernaut mode, but adapted to team play. Kill Confirmed is nothing more than team deathmatch, with each corpse dropping tags that need to be collected for the kill to be scored. Neither is hardly a revolution in multiplayer, heradling the culmination of the spin-off series' decline in innovation.
The curiosity of multiplayer gaming is the only motivation to purchase the game. The multiplayer element remains largely unchanged since Modern Warfare 2, even though Black Ops offered a more robust system - the balance of unlocking and purchasing equipment was far more enriching than simply unlocking the gear as in MW3. However, the mainstream has moved on from MW2 and Black Ops to MW3, for better or worse. Finding a server in either game is made all the more difficult with the bulk of players moving on. The question one must ask is, how badly do I want to pay for a game I already own? Unfortunately, the disparity between critic response and user response seems to indicate that, had these concerns been brought to light earlier, the third title would not have outsold its predecessor. Critics and consumers bought into hype that was delivering a diluted product. Expect to see this title stacking the pre-owned shelves as there is not enough content to leave this on your shelf at home.

    Reasons I gave MW3 a 5.
    1) Why can i jump up on one dumpster but not a different one in the same map? Zero continuity, this problem has bugged me from mw2 and BO.
    2) I can run up over a ledge or something but a small object on the ground stops me dead in my tracks? Really! 3) Can I please just have a playlist that connects me to the fastest (lowest ping) game what ever that game is. > 125

Does the game live up to the massive hype generated when the brand name is mentioned?
Did the quality of the game cause the sales to be what they are?
    Disappointingly, no to both.
This is simply a mediocre game that feels unfinished and rushed, and, as to avoid beating around the bush, just not very fun.
I am an optimist so I will start with the good first.
-Survival! It is decent, but once you hit that wave you can never get past you realize you won't ever pass it, so it isn't fun anymore after you unlock everything.
-Leveling up! You don't go 5 minutes without increasing your weapon level or getting promoted or completing some kind of challenge.
-Customization! My classes are unique to me, and that is a great feeling.
Now for what isn't the greatest.
-Visuals. For a blockbuster title, it falls way short of expectations, especially considering the developers' nearly unlimited budget. It isn't necessarily that the graphics were sub-par (but were beginning to show their age), but that the color palate and the lighting was atrocious. I could barely see anything, even after adjusting brightness because of the monochromatic nature of the included maps. Every map has the exact same "ruined city" theme, and they all seem far to similar to get a new experience all the time. That leads me into the next topic, maps.
-Maps. I have never played a game where the maps were this poorly made and dull since 2003. Not only are they too cramped for sniping, if that's your niche, they are also far too large for many CQB encounters, making shotguns and sniper rifles completely useless. Every building has a similar design to the next, and lack of effort is apparent. Each CoD had its own Nuketown, a community favorite map of some sort. Modern Warfare 3 lacks even that. Arkaden in particular was utterly terrible.
-Campaign. Other games do it better. The AI is dumb as bricks and aren't any sort of fun to fight. The only redeeming feature of the campaign may be its length, but I didn't even feel the will to play it to the end because it just wasn't fun.
-Sound. I have NEVER gotten a headache or gotten frustrated with sound in a game before, and to make matters worse, it was all directly imported from Modern Warfare 2 or was a generic noise only slightly tweaked. Sound effects were weak in general, and the guns all sounded like toys. Explosions were like firecrackers, which is even worse for a noise you will hear 24/7 in this game. -Recycled. At least I give credit to Treyarch for doing something different with their switch from World at War to Black Ops, giving the two games a different feel while the 3rd installment in the Modern Warfare series feels too much like the second, especially in multiplayer which is ridiculously broken.
-Multiplayer. The weapon leveling system is pretty nice, but besides that it gives me deja vu of the days of MW2. Heck, sometimes people weren't sure which one I was playing! The mechanics of multiplayer are simple and the same as always, not really any notable new gametypes. As if it couldn't get any less of a downer than that, the spawning system is atrocious, and don't even get me started on weapon balance. I have a 5.7 K/D, and that was because I found I could exploit the weapon unbalances to the extreme to get that insane ratio, not because I am a good player. If you owned MW2 and loved it, never got bored of it I'd wait another month or so until the huge price drop then you will probably enjoy it. If you are new to CoD, I would stay away as it isn't worth the money right now.
If you make your purchases only after a ton of research and are 100% sure you think it will be worth it, then it is in your best interest to avoid this altogether.
This game felt like a low-budget project, and the lack of effort from the dev team was obvious. Overall, 5.1 out of 10.

Apart from that, its still fun, missions are varied, entertaining and dont require much skill even on veteran compared to black ops that is but the ending will give you a great surprise. Spec Ops. Spec ops is very fun, mission are varied but are way to easy even on veteran, and survival was a brilliant addition to this spec ops. It's good to get the DLC from COD elite as well. Multiplayer: although the multiplayer is fun, its a copy paste from MW2, top to bottom, many weapons, game titles, sound effects, as well as kill streaks all come from previous titles (espacially MW2). Well some people do tell me why change what's great? Well I would normally agree the core gun on gun game play is still they're but is being hindered by MAJOR balance issues from perks to weapons, no dedicated servers, lack of team play as well as knife issues all that with a terrible spawn system. The maps all feel the same. Probably the most disappointing aspect of the game. Even Robert Bowiling the creative strategist said this in an interview : "I feel like we are in a f*cking era where everyone is so focused on subscriber numbers and all that stuff that we need to get back to what I feel like we did so much better in the old days of just plain good will, like stuff like the LAN patch, yeah it is lower priority but letâ Expand

Although the game is robust the Call of Duty franchise is becoming stale there is no innovation here. It is the same game as it's predecessor with slightly updated graphics. There are four modes in the game Campaign, Spec Ops, Survival and multiplayer. The Campaign is about 4 to 5 hours which is pretty average for a modern FPS again you will find nothing new here it has it's set pieces and guided path. Spec Ops returns it can only be described as a challenge mode to people who don't know it can be a lot of fun playing co-op. Then there is survival which is surprisingly fun it's basically fighting waves of increasingly tougher enemies. Finally multiplayer is where the biggest problems exist the small field of few, small maps and bad spawns.
These problems in multiplayer makes most encounters a death trap which will punish new players and irritate the hardened veteran. Now don't get me wrong this game is solid if you enjoy the fps genre but I cannot recommend it to the average gamer. To the call duty fan give it a go make up your own mind but I feel it is going to be the same experience as it's predecessors. To the average gamer there are cheaper, better and more interesting games to spend you're money on. The Call of Duty series needs to try something new instead of cashing in on previous successes before people lose interest. The sad fact is this franchise might have to die before we see innovation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One thing has to be said before I start the actual review, the game is decent, not excellent. Now with that out of the way, let's delve into the meat of the game. The campaign is one of the best of the Call of Duty series, (the best of the Modern Warfare trilogy). The gameplay is your typical FPS, run, shoot, run again, shoot again. However, there are ocasional stealth parts, but last for all of a minute, and then you go back to the basic mechanics. As I said, the story is one of the best in the Call of Duty series. This campaign ties up all loose ends in the series. We find out the problems that have occurred from the previous games (in the story) and leaves you with (of course) a cliffhanger ending. The story is only 5-7 hours. This is no longer acceptable. You can probably get through this game in one sitting. Now the multiplayer. If you are like me, you have played every Call of Duty since Call of Duty 4. The game get's very old, very quickly. With very few new weapons (with different features). There are however, many more gameplay types (most of which are addicting and fun). This does not save the multiplayer at all. For those who want to experience Call of Duty first hand, pick this up. For those who are achievement hoarders, you may just want to rent this and kill a few hours on a Saturday. Expand

However, as mentioned earlier this game has a lot of issues; firstly, it completely lacks any originality. Generic military FPS guns, the usual gametypes with only one or two unique to the game and the same gameplay. While the last may seem a little unfair since it is part of a series, at least most game series try to mix things up each time (Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Borderlands etc.) Mw3 has not budged an inch. Also, the community is awful. Lots of small kids screaming into the mic over a game, campers and spawn killing are all in great abundance, which mars the multiplayer a lot. However, if you can stand the community and are looking for a simple, mindless game experience then by all means get it. For anyone looking for something original or complex, leave it. You won't regret it. Expand

I really thought this game was going to be great. I thought it was going to have the addictive smooth gameplay of MW2, but without **** exploiting half the stuff and playing unfairly, and without OP things. I was wrong.

The singleplayer is the only reason to even play this game. While the singleplayer is a blast, featuring very fun missions and awesome action, it suffers story wise. The campaign is also the most linear to date, and is the shortest, even shorter than MW2. Although it has great action scenes (The airplane level blew my mind) some of them are just plain dumb and predictable. It seems that every corner you turn something is going to blow up, your guy gets knocked onto his ass, and something collapses. That's half of the action scenes. Plus there is one for every mission. MW2 found a perfect balance to the action scenes, and they were awesome and unexpected. The story is filled with plot holes and bad writing, although there are some memorable moments and quotes, and some parts were rather interesting, but overall it was terrible. All of the stuff is unrealistic as well. The soundtrack is okay, compared to the godly soundtrack of MW2, and the story ends by basically killing off almost every main character instead of coming up with a meaningful ending. It felt empty and unfulfilled, and it just cut to black afterwards. I feel a lot more could've been done. However it still is a fun campaign that I did somewhat enjoy.

Special ops isn't that great. The missions in MW2 were a lot better and just felt more fun and varied. These ones just felt dull and boring, and it's not even really worth playing. And Survival mode is fun at first, and surprisingly refreshing, but it gets boring after a while, because of two fatal flaws. Enemy's get too tough too fast (At round 40 dogs take like an entire LMG clip) and it's only for two players. It's fun for the first few times though.

And finally multiplayer. It's basically MW2s multiplayer (which is great) with some changes and upgrades that I really like. However, I later learned that it caused more problems than it solved. The new killstreak system is better and more advanced and offers a greater variety, but it's annoying that support users can use an EMP or Stealth bomber after dying 50 times. The specialist bonus is probably the best new addition to the call of duty franchise since create a class, and it gives you so much more freedom. Instead of always using scavenger or some other perk that you can't play without, you can earn them through killstreaks and aren't limited to the perks that won't put you at a disadvantage.

There are two new attachments, which is the hybrid scope for ARs and SMGs. They aren't used at all and are not needed. The new weapon proficiency system I like, especially for the ability to have to have two attatchments without not using scavenger.

Overall, that's basically all the major new things. The multiplayer would be great though, if it weren't for the terrible maps that are the worst maps in call of duty to date, lag compensation which just breaks the game for me, still OP killstreaks, **** who camp and do **** things, and OP guns like the MP7. That just breaks the MP, which could've been so good if it weren't for that. These changes should've been what MW2 had to offer aswell, but it didn't.

Graphics wise, they are slightly tweaked from MW2, and look nearly the same. Sometimes levels look more detailed, and sometimes they look downright worse than Cod4. The water is improved and looks good, they finally made new effects for things like the rocket smoke trail and explosions, which look great. The lighting they slightly tweaked, which is the biggest graphical mistake they did. The lighting makes environments look so much less colourful and it makes it look ugly, it's ridiculous. Some levels though I was quite surprised at it's detail, although it still doesn't look that great. The sound effects are great for the environment, like things blowing up, infact they are really good, but the gun sounds sound so damn bad. Overall, if you're a hardcore fan of cod, especially the first two and just totally rape in them, MW3 should be worth your money. Otherwise, it is known to many cod fans to be the worst in the series, but it's not a bad game overall, but not a very good one either.

MW3 lacks the iconic Call of Duty feel that we have become accustomed too. It feels at times like some cheap Call of Duty rip off, this limits it's potential and makes for an irritating lack of identity. The multiplayer maps are poor but the conclusion to the trilogy's story makes this instalment worth playing.

Now i don't always agree with critics but even they thought deus ex was much better than black ops2 and look how deus ex sells maybe 2 million including pc and Call of doody black oops2 sells 10 times that on xbox alone. Even worse a great immersive FPS with ten times the heart and story Metro 2033 sells under 500,000 copies, yes it sold in the ball park of four hundred thousand copies...shameful that a quality game like that sells all together less than what CoD sells in one day. Is this because CoD blows ops2 is soooooo much better than metro....? NO, it is not but brain washed sheep buy the same game with the same engine in it with the same graphics every single year, they just change the name or put a creative (1),(2),or (3) next to it and the lambs come running to shell out 60$ instead of getting a truly unique experience and maybe having some taste or style or any uniqueness of your own. Even a mega hit multiplatform game that in my opinion might be the best of all time the vaunted "Fallout 3" pales in comparison with around 8mil sold while each CoD game more than triples those sales. Can even a CoD fan name any CoD game that even comes close to being as great as Fallout 3....wait i forgot to say that modernwarfare 2 doesn't count........just kidding that would be too cruel because that is what you were gonna say right CoD fanboy you original gamer you, and i bet you play CoD on your XBOX too how original and i bet you don't even play the 4hr campaign do you? Oh wait bungie is actually doing something good now (i.e. Destiny) so i guess 343 or whatever their name is will be copy and pasting a new label on the same old halo game, but at least halo doesnt come out twice a year. Good luck on not being as good as Battlefield 4 Call of Doody Ghosts (scary ghosts) but hey there are enough dumb people out there so you will outsell them even with last gen graphics and the same exact engine as model warfare. This is one of the most disappointing games I've ever played! After the masterpiece that was MW2, I expected MW2 on steroids, but instead I got this crap! The worst part of this game is, by far, the Campaign! The campaigns of both previous Modern Warfare games are legendary! The story is dumb, generic, and forgettable. What's worse is it doesn't feel like Modern Warfare at all, until the Third Act. After Soap dies, the campaign actually has weight, but oh my god!!!

The multiplayer is laggy as hell, and the maps are terrible! They nerfed some of the best guns from MW2 including the UMP45, Barrett 50Cal, and ACR! WTF! The IMS is ridiculous, the graphics are worse than MW2's, and maybe even the first MW game! The spec ops missions are lazily tacked on, but Survival mode is a nice addition, IMO.

It's not a bad game, but the hype and disappointment is why this game gets such terrible reviews!

It's mediocre, forgettable, dumb, and basically a copy-paste of MW2 but with more BS, like the IMS, Juggernaut, etc.

By the way, the original Dev team that created the previous Modern Warfare Games were either fired or quit! The new Infinity Award team is a bunch of noob developers! After this game, DO NOT BUY ANY IW COD AGAIN!!

To sum it up its too much bells and whistles and not enough FPS. If you want a FPS that is just that a First person shooter i would not recommend this game, if u want a skill less frag fest with enough helicopter gun ships, stealth bombers and remote control missiles to replace the car as the accepted mode of transport. more explosions than people and a game decided by lag not seen since the days of dial up then MW3 is for you, i got my copy for £25, but i had to pay full retail £44.99 i would have been so annoyed. To that I say: There's always room for improvement, no game's perfect.

I initially gave this game a good rating and got upset with all the people leaving negative reviews. Well things have changed. Elite service which I paid 50 dollars for still doesn't work. The lag compensation is so bad that this game is just not fun anymore. Even when that's not happening the game is just utter garbage. I mean really ??? No dedicated servers for a game that is going to make over a billion dollars. I will never buy another Moderen Warfare game again. Expand

Very much dissatisfied with this game thus far. The MP graphics look identical to MW2 which was a surprise for me. The multiplayer offerings are the usual fare. It seems as though they did not want to risk changing much or adding anything new, and wanted to play it safe. The game plays as well as any of the other COD's out there. It is much more MW2.5 than an actual sequel. I was very bored playing this game the 2nd day and am not sure how much more I will be playing. I have prestiged 7 times in the last 2 COD's, and doubtful I will get close to that this go round. The game is just getting stale.

    The end.

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
