A great game, but severely over-hyped.
If people felt like MW3 was MW2.5, then this game is Bad Company 2.5
The campaign looks amazing, but falls short in the end.
Multiplayer is good, but i personally dont like how slow it is, you can win a match without even firing you're weapon which to me makes it not a shooter, but a war strategy. Good game, just far too similar to the last BF title.

This is a great game, although I know we all wish it had a longer campaign. The game has an incredibly in-depth multiplayer, though it is relatively slow-paced. I legitimately thought the game was very good. Way better than the garbage that was BC2. However, I wasn't going to give it a 10 until IGN insisted on writing TWO full articles crying about "Metacritic trolling." Sorry not everyone agrees with you, IGN.

This game has one of the greatest campaigns in all of history. This game has one the best multiplayer experiences in all of history. This game has one of the best graphics engines in all of history. This game is one of the best in all of history. I loved it. Skyrim has none of these but somehow I still like it better :/

Apparently they assumed everyone has played a previous BF title and will know what the sam hill is going on. I know everyone is in love with the new frostbite engine but I honestly can't see it. I think it looks terrible. The high contrast, lighting and this weird blue tinge everywhere give it a disjointed, unrealistic look. There are lots of graphic anomolies. A lamp post giving off light that forms a perfect, unmoving triangle like it's a painting. Another yellow light forming a perfect triangle in the daytime! At least I thought it was the day time because of a BLINDING white light coming from the direction of the sun, but then I noticed it was also raining and the sky was dark in other places. WTF! I also noticed what looked like water running down the side of a building but then from a different angle it disappeared! I also noticed my gun was wobbling around like it was hung from a string. Thankyou for the continual break in immersion. I remember installing the texture pack but I had to go into the system memory and check just to make sure because the graphics jsut look terrible. I realize I may not have given the game a fair shake but this was enough for me to leave the game for good. Expand

    GENIUS.

This game is mark of genius.

And like any other review of a game that in my opinion should be multiplayer only, I will NOT be reviewing the single player. But if I did, it would have no effect on this score.

    Lets get right to it

    GAMEPLAY:

Its like a moving symphony, I remember reading up on Grand Theft Auto III just a couple weeks ago. And the man behind the game was asked what makes his game so great. To which he replied "Its not all the systems we have in Grand Theft Auto III that makes the game great, it how all these systems are working together at once, that make the game so great"

And I couldn't have though of a better quote for this game.

Its not the fact that you can sneak around, like your favourite stealth action game character, using a silenced sniper rifle take out enemies from a distance, and then close the game to stab someone in the back. Its not the fact, that when you are shot at, at least for the first time, it scares you so badly, you damn near break the controller trying to go prone, its not the fact that when you are working with three other guys who are all communicating you feel like you are a SWAT team clearing out an area of terrorists, its not the fact that when you have can communicate with your friendly, tanks, harriers, and apache helicopters, to issue an air strike, or a bombing strike on your enemy.

Wait what?! THERE IS KILLSTEAKS IN BATTLEFIELD?

No, there isn't. But you wouldn't believe how many times I've thrown my mic on to tell the attack helicopter pilot I have a tank at B, and my troops are all out of anti-armor weapons. NAME ONE GAME YOU CAN DO THAT IN?! YOU CAN'T HAHAHA

    Continuing on;
Its not the fact that no matter how you play, you always have the potential to help your team out, its not the fact that you can slit the throat of five different enemies whom of which are all standing right next to each other, without a single one of them having any idea whats going on, I feel like I could keep going, but I think I should do the reader a favour by actually going into detail.

First I'm going to start off with my favourite part about this game.

If there was ever a tv show that was just all about guns (I don't watch tv, so if there is one, pretend I said that) this would be the video game for it.

All the guns behave EXACTLY like they do in real life. They all sound EXACTLY like they do in real life, they fire are the same rate and speed as they do in real life, they have the same magazine sizes as they do in real life. They fire the same bullets as they do in real life.

If you wanted, you could look up the list of the gun names in BF3, and then do a google search on the internet for the actual gun, and it would tell you everything you need to know about the gun in the game.

    That to me is impressive.

The most impressive part about that?

The fact that since they've decided to go realistic with the guns, that means that for the first time ever in a online first person shoot (first time ever) DICE can release guns for DLC without having to worry about them being balanced.

Incase you were wondering, thats why you don't get guns in call of duty DLC. Because the guns in call of duty fire "x"% damage. Meaning that if they brought in another gun, they'd either have to redesign every other gun already in the game, or basically make the new gun useless. Which is bring me to my second most favourite thing about this game.

You never feel like you died unfairly.

Now, there was one time where I thought I died unfairly. I hopped into a scout chopper, with chain guns, and some anti-air missiles. I found another helicopter, safe to say, I shot him about 4 times with anti-air missiles, all within a very short amount of time. 2 take down a chopper of that size, so when he didn't go down, I was upset. I figure out that he had engineers that were repairing their helicopter mid air.

    The solution to this problem?

Get about within 10-20 feet of their chopper, and fire those anti-air.

Doesn't even give them a chance to repair hahahaha
I LOVE THIS GAME! There is NEVER a reason in this game why you should do badly. And by that I mean, if you are doing badly, you can chance your strategy, and I guarantee you will immediately improve. Here are the **** part about this game. Now the first you may dismiss, because I do not know whether or not they have fixed it but; Someone people will not die, I recall shooting someone in the head three times in a row with the most high powered sniper rifle, and trust me, even if he had 30 health packs right next to him, he would still die. Also, support class gets mortar. Which means they can sit in their spot, incapable of dieing, and then they sit there for an ENTIRE game, and just wait to get kills. Personally I think its hilarious, that kind of strategy will make the call of duty fans happy.

I would give this a 10 if two things were fixed; be able to quit to the menu screen right after a match and not make it so hard to invite friends. Love this game. So refreshing to get in vehicles and blow up the scenery. Makes other games that can't do this seem dated...

I loved Battlefield Bad Company 2's multiplayer mode, it was fun, innovative, and time-consuming, to me this was the best multiplayer game out there. After playing it for over 20 hours I can safely say that it has lived up it's predecessor's standards. The new guns, vehicles, and the new Frostbite 2 engine run perfectly. Although there are some hitches in the gameplay in the middle of a match. I noticed that sometimes some of the gadgets glitch and end up not doing anything, for example one time one of my squad mates got killed right next to me and so I took out my defibrillator to revive him, but no matter how hard I tried i couldn't revive him. There are just small hitches in the game, most of the time they aren't noticeable but on rare occasions they can hinder your gameplay. Now I will move to the Campaign, it is not very good, at all, compared to the multiplayer experience single player suffers greatly. The campaign consists of 1 minute of gunplay and then a quick time event, also the AI is far to easy at some points, and then at other points, the AI is so difficult I die after 2 seconds. The campaign is not good at all, but the multiplayer is where it is at. I would give this game a perfect ten for an innovative multiplayer but unfortunately a single player campaign was added and it dragged the game down. If you're going to buy this game, buy it for the multiplayer, not the campaign. Expand

This is more strategic and less ball-to-wall than its CoD counterpart, and the introduction of vehicles mixes it up too. The only problem I have is that it is more difficult to pinpoint the enemy, and be accurate if you are new to the franchise. I often get killed without having ever seen my killer. While this can be frustrating, it is not enough to bring the experience down too much. Expand

Single Player was average at best and even though it did capture the essence of the battlefield, it did not deliver on story telling and making the player feel emotionally attatched to the characters. While playing it though I did not get bored and it definately was not a bad campaign and well worth playing, but dont expect it to live up to all the hype it does in the trailers. DICE focused soley on the multiplayer aspect of this game and it definately shows, with months of unlocks it is definatley worth investing time into this game. You will always feel like your'e progressing even though you're not killing someone, and there is so much you can do to help you're team such as healing teamates, reparing vehicles and so much more. However there is a downside and I believe that it is pretty major. PC versions of BF3 have 64 player online where the battlefield feels real and on the console's it has 24 the same for BC2. Trailers depict heavy battle with explosions happening all around you while this may well ring true for the PC version this is definately not the case for console and is a real shame. While it works well on small maps such as Grand Bazaar big maps on conquest like caspian border feel shameful and hardly any action will take place. If you have a PC that can play this game then I strongly sugest you go get that but it is perfectly fine for the Xbox 360 and one game that will keep me entertained for months perhaps years Expand

It could have been perfect with a better campaign or additional game modes, and also the interfaces are a bit uncomfortable by the time to create your classes or choosing your weapons, but for the moment it's without any doubt my favourite game. There are a few minor cons, but it should not be hard to look past them and focus on the great things it does. For example, jets are extremely challenging to level up at first seeing as how all you have is a machine gun. However, once you can finally unlock the flares and then the missiles, you will be a force. The dog fights are intense! The maps are great in this game as well. They remind me of the old CoD4's maps only much larger. Rush Mode is the best game mode. It requires squads to coordinate attacks in order to win. You must plant bombs to blow up M-COM stations if you are attacking, and you defend them if you are defending. Conquest is another great game mode. In this mode you have to control certain areas in order to win. It's similar to a Domination type game. Team Deathmatch is also in this game as well. The Single Player is not the best, but its bearable. The graphics and set pieces are great in this game. The live action events are annoying, but they make sense for the plot. If you are a veteran of CoD and are looking for another war game to play on the side or to take over your love of CoD, this game is a much more suitable substitution than games such as Homefront or Mag.e Expand

Unlike the competition, there is a real teamwork element to each round- in CoD games, a team with one amazing player can win every time. In BF3, the team that works together the most generally wins. There were some connection issues on release on XBOX LIve, but those seem to have been completely resolved (I can now get into an online game in BF3 more consistently than any other game I've played on XBL) If you're looking for a gripping single player mode, pass on this game. I thought the story was well done and the quicktime events were alright. I would have liked to see a more Crysis-like campaign but obviously this game out-shines any other when it comes to mulitplayer. In a market saturated with CoD games every single year, BF3 is something new and exciting. Vehicles; land, sea and air, and massive online battles, (24-console, 64-PC) make it stand out. Teamwork is also emphasized much more than other shooters and being 1st in a game doesn't mean you have to most kills thanks to being able to heal and revive team mates, repair vehicles and give out ammo cache as well as capturing points for your team. The single-player has been improved and the campaign makes a refreshing change after playing the Bad Company series, which I found quite cheesy and gimmicky, now it feels dynamic with impressive 'Call of Duty' style scripted set pieces. The co-op campaign is pretty good also, its different to the main campaign and takes roughly 6 hours to play through. The only bad thing I found about the co op was the helicopter mission. Helicopter piloting on Battlefield has always been hit and miss; it requires a huge amount of coordination and patience, it is also unintuitive and hard to learn. I have played the entire Battlefield series, and never have I felt the need to learn the fly the chopper. I have avoided it at all times. The second multi-player mission is based entirely around the chopper and unlike the spec ops mode in Call of Duty there is no way to select roles, the only way to switch from pilot to gunner is to repeatedly fail or crash on purpose. I could imagine a lot of players giving up at this point which is a shame. I found the multi-player in Bad Company 2 more enjoyable, which had better class balance. Recon (my favorite class) feels underpowered now, they have removed mortar strike, and increased bullet drop on sniper rifles (but guns from other kits have no bullet drop even at max range which means you can make a more effective sniping class from the assault or engineer class by equipping a 6 or 8x combat scope to your rifle/SMG as well as getting a superior load-out to recon). Unlocks are earned on weapons individually instead of on kits, which adds rewards to players who stick to a favorite gun, however casual players who trade up weapons every level will never see the majority of unlocks.
Graphically BF3 is way ahead of the competition. The single player graphics are awesome. The co-op and multi-player models & textures are also very good, however the draw distance could be a bit better, but overall looks great and lag free even on big maps with 20 players.
The sound is good (not quite as good as recent Call of Duty games) and sounds great in 5.1 surround with decent bass, however, menus and loading screens are punctuated with dubstep riffs which I didn't really like.
In terms of value I would say it is roughly the same as Bad Company 2, while you have a new co-op campaign you are now forced to register an online pass, (free at release) priced at 800 Microsoft points (£4.50) which is an unwanted expense for customers borrowing it off a friend or renting the game for the weekend. The store exclusive pre-order DLC content is also a pain in the ass. It's a good deal for stores wanting to shift extra units, but bad for consumers (I ended up buying the game at £44.99 from Gamestation purely for the pre-order DLC whereas the game was £38.99 from Amazon.co.uk with an inferior unlock) who want to access all the content.
The re-playability is OK, the weapon proficiencies, ribbons and awards, and the achievement for max multi-player level will keep completionists red eyed into 2012.

Boring short campaign. Multiplayer would be good if it wasn't for the horrible community. Frostbite 2 is a great engine but it doesn't show in the console version. Horrible textures and pop-up are cover by glaring lense-flare. installing the texture pack doesn't actually help. It adds lag to singleplayer. If you enjoy shooters, it's worth a rental.

The multiplayer is by far the most fun I've ever had with an FPS. The level of detail is astounding - the scale, graphical marvels and stellar gameplay. Whether I am playing alone or with friends, this game has killed time like no other. I've owned the game since its release and have barely noticed the days of playtime that I've already put into it. If you aren't use to FPS controls, they take some getting used to, but the control-design of everything from your soldier, to both air and land vehicles, and even to the way projectiles are affected by gravity are all superb - fluent and intuitive. Minor bugs have popped up here and there, though this is almost always the case with newly released online games and luckily none remotely game breaking (some being nothing but amusing); they are being dealt with and fixed anyway. Recommended for experienced and new gamers alike, please give this one a chance. If you are in the least curious about online gaming, I beseech you to give this game a real chance and just see if you don't enjoy it. Expand

Awesome game, well-done Frostbite.. So dynamic and so deep compared to MW3. Do you hate getting quick-scoped? do you hate drop shooters? Then i highly recommend BF3. I used to be a huge Call of Duty fan, but they just stopped evolving, and continued taking our money. Where they failed, BF3 definitely picked up the slack. BUY THIS GAME. But they make up for it in massive maps and that you can take down buildings / destroy cover. Expand

I COULD NOT ENJOY THIS SHOOTER MORE THAN ANY OTHER! This and CRYSIS 2 have got to be the best shooters of the year! For the simple reason of trying to innovate! God, not to call of duty bash, but to compare, call of duty is so lame for lacking innovation. Battlefields movement system and physics go well beyond anything of this year and Crysis had the same inspiration in fast paced strategy and nano suit handling as well as the movement system of a GOD for a game. So hands down, this deserves maximum score, because in the end, this is what we want more of, and this is what we should encourage for the direction of interaction in games. Expand

If you're looking for a great single player campaign you're out of luck, rent BF3 or pick it up in the bargain bin. If you're looking for the best online multiplayer action then BF3 is your game hands down.

While Battlefield 3 was aiming to be the biggest name this holiday season, and while it has made strides towards knocking off Modern Warfare 3, it misses the mark. That's not to say it is a bad game, it's a very good one, but the polish and excitement that is found on the Call of Duty series feels missing here. Still, there are much worse games you could end up with this holiday season, and the competition between the two series should heat up significantly in the next few years.

This experience alone sums up what Battlefield 3 is about. It isn't a John Rambo run and gun shooter and it shouldn't really be compared to MW3 in terms of how you play it. For players to truly understand the Battlefield experience you need to embrace the teamwork by joining a squad and calling out your spotted enemies, as after all, sometimes you also need your back covered too.
