This is a fun game! You get to create your own Mario levels! The graphics are good. The controls are great. The gameplay is awesome! You can even do stuff that you can't do in previous Mario games. Super Mario Maker is a fun game and I would definitely recommend this game.

I actually have played all 4 of the Mario Games listed, they're fun, but Super Mario Maker is way better. There's no story in this wonderful game as far as I know of. This game really gets me to get my imagination going, and I do recommend you get this game because it is very awesome and if you don't like Super Mario Maker, you're BEYOND silly as JB.

This game deserved be released a lot of years behind, in same time of Little Big Planet.

Ok, the possibilities if you compare this game with LBP are less, too much less. But the Mario universe helps this game, and you can enjoy all Mario games across the years.

    Awesome game, must buy

Firstly, I never play other people's levels because most of the time it's one of those "impossible" levels which it's really hard to beat. And I'm not complaining about those types of levels but there are way too much of these levels. Also there isn't everything you can put on your level, like the enemy spike, the squirrels and etc. They have some different enemies but they don't have all of the enemies.

Also it's not limitless... there is a limit to how much stuff you can put on a level and it's gets annoying quite frankly. Because I'm a creative person and when I want to make interesting landscapes. I cannot because I'm limited to "XX" blocks....

But otherwise. I love this game, it stays in my top 5 Wii U games for sure.

A great online Mario game finally hits the market!

To start off, let's take a look at the different game level designs to choose from ( Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. 3, etc.). This method is actually one of the most detailed parts of the game, as each design matters depending on the course, as certain major gimmicks appear through some games, and others don't. Super Mario Maker keeps each game true to its original and that is what I found the most impressing.

The tutorial is pretty good for new Mario players ( although boring and it could've been better).

Another thing that I would like to point out that is so great in the game is the use of different, more complex items as unlockables. I find this to be very essential so the game isn't a freebie with everything when you start the game so you have little to no experience becoming a level designer. Once you have more experience with the basic items, how the unlockables correlate are very well done so the game isn't so confusing.

The online mode is amazing, other than some minor missteps. The completion system is perfect, the sections you want to play are easy to reach, and the difficulty setting, especially with the 100-Mario challenge, are mostly well done (despite some issues). The comment section is good, but flawed, as the game takes a "Minecraft" approach to online play and no censorship is done for younger players. Nintendo needs to be careful of this. Invisible blocks are a broken way of posting difficult online courses. Personally, I think Nintendo needs a way to stop that.

One minor ( but biggest) problem with the game is the lack of some really cool additives that should've been used in the game, mainly the checkpoints.

Even though it sounds like I would give this a 7/10, the game is nostalgia-bringer for the older adults/teens and a great start for younger children. Fun for all ages and can bring a challenge, anything you wanted in a Mario world is not limited to many fun features and gameplay that this game brings. The value is a steal! $60 for many greatly designed levels and hours of fun? Therefore, I give this a medium 9/10! Buy this game if you are a Mario fan. NOW!

When you start the customization, it gets intense, A huge amount of tools are at your disposal with multiple forms by shaking the object rapidly to change it. After you finish a level, you can post it for others to play and you will get ratings by other players. There is a 100 life challenge where you playthrough a series of levels with 100 lives. The only negatives I can think of are some customization is missing such as the surface of water and others. Super mario bros. has been the symbol of the gaming industry and Nintendo celebrated 30 years of breaking blocks, stomping Goombas, collecting Shrooms and more by bringing us: SUPER MARIO MAKER!

But does this fancy tool have the Shigeru Miyamoto magic?

    Well let's find out

    Presentation-9/10

I bet Nintendo was putting a lot of effort on the amazing tutorial when you load the game for the first time
and the menu. The menu just shows you a random level which you could play on when you move up on the left analog stick and tapping on enemies with the sylus so yeah! the presentation is outstanding!

    Graphics- 10/10

The color brightness, contrast, etc are absolutely perfect for 2 NES , 1 SNES and 1 WII U game styles
unlike the exact port of all-stars for Super Mario's 25th anniversary which used the same graphics!

    Sound/Music- 9/10

The sound effects were amazing and the music it's self is awesome and catchy to listen to!

    Options- 6/10

Alongside the other stuff the options are a bit of a disappointment making the game rub off the magic out of Shigeru Miyamto because there are no things such as checkpoints, Blue Koopas and Chargin' chucks and the height limit is low!
It really is missing out a lot of options! Although, hopefully the juicy DLC and updates come out as soon as possible to fix that!

    Online Functionality- 9.5/10

The Online Function is Perfect in this game! You get too upload levels after you clear them and other people can play them too! You can also follow creators you like, star their courses, comment and download them too! The best part is that each level you upload will be posted on Miiverse automatically!
One con is that finding courses need IDs not the course name!

    Gameplay- 9.4/10

Just like a 2D Super Mario game: The gameplay is outstanding! The amiibo usage is amazing and the 100/10 Mario challenge is just great! The creation tool is great, especially for beginners!

    Lasting appeal- 9.5/10

This game is worth at a lot of your gaming time!

Verdict: Super Mario Maker may lack options and would not be a tool that miyamoto uses but it doesn't stop it for being a very nice way of celebrating Super Mario Bros.' 30th aniversary! Almost Everything about this game is outstanding! Almost everything!

I give it a 9/10 which means Outstanding!

    Pros
    +10/100 Mario challenge
    +Clever Amiibo usage
    +Clean Creation interface
    +Neat palette
    +Level upload and troll verification
    +Perfect Graphics

To be honest, this is definitely one of the best ideas that Nintendo has ever had. When they first announced the game, I wasn't really that excited for it. Not that many people were. Sure, I was going to get it, but not a first-day buy. But then, when you saw the progress evolve in the game, with the extra tools and gadgets, and even online capability - you know that this game has got to be good. So, let's review each individual parts.

    A: Music/Sounds

Everyone loves music in games, but Super Mario Brothers has never really been well known for its music. But in this game, the remixes during the creation of levels gets you more into the game. The way the speech goes with the tune - masterful! Though, unfortunately the music for each style/setting is locked, so you can't have New Super Mario Brothers U Castle music on a classic Super Mario Brothers Ground stage. Really limits the potential. But, with the all-new music block, you can literally create your own music. I won't really get into that, but it sure is amazing.

    7/10

    B: Gameplay

Some of the best in Mario Games history. The jumping feels so smooth and superb, and doesn't lag a bit like in the older Mario Brothers games. Switching between gamemodes is extraordinarily easy, pretty much a tap of a button. The physics in each graphical style changes with what that game had. For example: In Super Mario Brothers U, you can Wall-Jump. In Super Mario Brothers 3, you can grab shells and throw them around. In Super Mario World, you can throw shells and even Galoombas upwards. Creating levels is also extremely easy, with a user-friendly interface and a tile-based placing system. Switching from create mode to play mode works like a charm, and there are barely no loading screens in the entire game.Unfortunately, when you start off the game, you're only given the essentials. Classical and New Graphical style, goomba, coins, koopa - stuff like that. Originally, it was extremely annoying as you had to wait 9 days to get everything, but they have now fixed that and you earn more blocks by creating more.

    9/10

    C: Online

Seeing what other people have been coming up with is great and all, but unfortunately most of the levels are extremely horribly made, or are Automatic levels (Complete themselves without you pressing a button). I mean, an Automatic level is great and all. Seriously, some are really good. But for the 50th time, you tend to get a little bored of it. Another major problem, is the TROLL levels. Seriously, don't get me started on these guys. You can't upload a level unless you can complete it. Unfortunately, trolls are able to get around that by placing random invisible blocks that will miraculously reveal the path to the end. Not only is it a troll, but ruins the entire point of beating a level to upload it. This can make the Expert mode on the 100 Mario Challenge disappointing and impossible. Luckily though, you can get around that by skipping the level. I'm not going to get into the 100 Mario Challenge, that will be for you to discover and get rewards from.

    6/10

Overall, Super Mario Maker is an amazing game with awesome potential. I can't wait to see all the DLC and competitions to come. My total rating, for this game is a...

    9.5/10

This is a MUST BUY for anyone without a Wii-U.

Nintendo, this is a perfect example of the perfect game to make. This is direct fan service and I wish they would do it more often. My exact score for this is 96 so I rounded up to a 10 because of the restriction to user reviewers. This game lets every creative fan of Mario have there time to shine. They have the ability to make any Mario map they desire, and it's amazing. My friend who I invited to play the game with came over and had a blast. She is an artist and she easily put her creativity into the game with little to no restrictions, this is practically nintendo's version of Minecraft. For those who are not as creative as others, you have the option to play any mario level under the sun, created by other users. Heavily popular music soundtrack related levels, nearly impossible levels, extremely easy levels, levels full of bombs, levels full of bowsers, levels full of coins, levels full of stars... this game has no limit on the type of level you want to create or play.

The gamepad works perfectly with the concept, and the touch screen menu controls feel quick and efficient. Making great Mario levels isn't limited by mastery of the elements, its limited be creativity. Which makes it such a disappointment that 90% of levels are utter garbage pumped out with no thought or neatness whatsoever. What makes it even worse is that, instead of giving a fair critique system to give people constructive criticism, downvote weakly designed levels and promote creative ones, Nintendo decided to make it an "everyone wins" kiddy game. You can't comment on a level without using the sole upvote button, making criticism and by extension improvement impossible. This baffling decision is by far the game's worst feature. There are many problems with the community as well. Traditional and creative Mario levels are thrown aside so that uncreative auto and troll levels can be thrown to the top of the standings, in other words cheap gimmicks are favored over actually good mario levels and creativity. I made a single troll level that took 20 minutes, and in 2 days it accumulated more likes and stars than my other 4 actual levels I spent days on combined. Which leads me to the star feature. Its incredibly obvious the "star" is to like levels, to give people a reward for working hard, but instead its treated as a "favorite" button, even though it isn't. People are absurdly stingy with stars, and a level with 100,000 plays can have less than 1,000 stars. However, there are many fantastic levels out there, and almost enough to combat the terrible ones. Kaizo in particular are extremely fun and challenging, and provide a constant distraction. Back to the level designer, a surprising number of notable Mario features are included, but 3 times as many are left out for absolutely no reason whatsoever, which greatly takes away from the substance of the game. In conclusion, Mario Maker is a deeply flawed game, which is only saved from a 7 by its ingenuity and creativity. Expand

Super Mario Maker is a great game that deserves your attention. If Nintendo keeps giving the game free downloadable content regularly like they are currently, then it will be hard for you to get bored. This is a great 30th birthday present for Mario, as you can play an infinite amount of courses, even though are some bad levels here and there.

I honestly love this game it is primarily a 80$ level creator but it's worth it. It has enough modes to play if you don't feel like making the courses and there's also the awesome user made levels. If you ever wanted your own unique Mario levels then get this game

I thought I wasn't creative enough to do anything good in the game but even then I made some pretty fun levels. Having an online server with infinite levels is great for the Wii U with a game you can play for as long as the servers are up. Sure there are troll levels which is very annoying but they are rare and you can find levels that may be even better then Nintendo designs themselves. The Maker tool gets updates every month or so and they are all free. Now there is the play side. There is 10 Mario Challenge which are simple levels using the Maker tool made by the game developers. Then there is 100 Mario challenge with 3 difficulties. I would play Normal usually because Easy is usually just spam levels and hard are a lot of instant-kill levels. Peoples levels can really shine here. Completing the 100 Mario Challenge gives you costumes each time you win the Challenge. Nintendo usually uploads levels that give you mystery mushroom costumes. This game has some of the best Amiibo compatibility on Wii U. If you have a collection you will not be disappointed. These characters are only in the original Mario style which is sad but I understand it would take a lot of work to implement them into all 4. There is also a fun fly-swatting mini game to have fun with. All-in-All this one of the best Wii U games we have and is definitely a system seller and I cannot recommend it enough. Expand

Of course Super Mario Maker is a really great game. The only part that really stinks about this whole thing is it's an idea stolen from fans, and in the process of its making, harmed those fans and basically told them to screw themselves. But, despite the history of the games development, I must admit that this is so much fun to mess around with.

Mario Maker is a fun time. Yes it may lack a lot of the mechanics that make the games so great but you'll find yourself building levels for months and months. It's community and creators pushed very "non Mario" levels foward that were crazy and unbearable. It had it's audience but I was not a part of it. Overall the game was super fun, not perfect but fun.

Released on September 11th 2015 this game is a culmination of the series (just the 2D ones) from its beginnings Super Mario bros. (1985) to its more current offering New Super Mario Bros U (2013). Super Mario Maker is that one of a kind game that can capture that nostalgic feeling while creating something fresh and new all at the same time.

To create levels you are given a tool set which you control using the Wii u gamepad. You will use the gamepad to sift through different game skins (there are four available Super Mario Bros NES, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros U) as well as different materials to make levels like questions blocks, enemies and power-ups, however in the beginning you’re are only dealing with baby tools so to speak like coins, blocks, goombas and koopa troopas you begin to unlock more things as you create levels and use every new piece you acquire. This was a day one patch to fix the outcry from fans that did not want to have to wait 9 days to unlock everything and thank goodness Nintendo listened. While this game technically isn’t treading new territory it does get a lot of things right. This is a game solely on creating, uploading and sharing and while there is an offline mode that offers over 100 levels I couldn’t help but feel that if I didn’t have the internet I wouldn’t have enjoyed Super Mario Maker as much and that in large part is to the community. With over 1 million plus levels uploaded at the time of writing this the community in this game is very active.

It’s shocking how fun it is to play a level created by someone on the other side of the world and in this Super Mario Maker does something different and something right that Nintendo has never done before. While there are a lot of levels that are real snooze fests (looking at you don’t press anything and automatic Mario.) there are some really thought out and fleshed out levels.

The devotion of some of the community in the levels and tones of their levels is absolutely stunning. An example of this would be a Mario level where Sonic is the hero. The level was titled Battery Zone and was created to mimic the level of the Sega Genesis classic. The level was very fun and totally unexpected but that is what is so great about Super Mario Maker having your expectations blown.

As mentioned earlier yes you can use Sonic infact through Amiibo integration or completing the 100 Mario Challenge (A mode where you play through 8 or 16 random user generated levels from the Super Mario Maker community also needs online connectivity.) these characters become available through the mystery mushroom and while can only be used on the original Super Mario Bros theme they add a unique appearance to make your play/creation time more enjoyable. But that is it, unfortunately these characters are purely cosmetic as they don’t change the fundamentals of the game which is both good and bad as I wished they brought something more to the game although the specific game themes that play after you finish a game with a mystery mushroom character are a nice touch.

The game modes offered in Super Mario Maker are Course World (their internet hub) and 10 Mario Challenge which is the part of the game that you can play offline. The difference in these two types is that 10 Mario Challenge has maps made by Nintendo so while some are easy you won’t see really awful stuff. When you clear courses in 10 Mario Challenge they go to your Coursebot (your nifty companion who helps you save, upload and create) for later playing.

Super Mario Maker is well aware of the game that it is and isn’t trying to be anything other than a fun time to distract yourself. This game lets you get intimate with the level designer within to create some of the most outlandish levels ever seen in Mario history. My only real gripe with the game is the fact that there are no checkpoints. Some of these levels can be really long and intricate and it feels like an absolute misstep to not include some kind of checkpoint system. It can be really frustrating getting through a real tough spot only to die on the next one and have to start over and while this was the basis for the original Mario games when Mario made the jump to 16 bit he also brought with him checkpoints so why this couldn’t be implemented is something that puzzles me. Another gripe issue I have that really might not be one for other gamers is why we can’t search for levels based on names instead of 16 digit code kind of upsets me but at the same time the game keeps a really good log of all the courses you’ve played as well a very nice sleek interface where you can find your courses as well as others.

When I got this game, I wondered to myself "I may like this game, but how the heck am I gonna be making any levels, I have no creativity whatsoever,". When getting the game though, I soon found out that it was nice to get into.

The game has a weird way of getting you into it, only you giving certain items after a few days of playing. Although weird, I found it helped me a lot, I wasn't getting overwhelmed with different elements and I had time to master the ones I currently had. Once you get all the items, you can see the improvement you've made into making levels, each new elements spawns new ideas. Once you get all of your elements, you can bring all those ideas together.

The level editor for this game is amazing, it went beyond my expectations. Making levels didn't feel like a chore, the editor found a way to make making levels something very enjoyable. Even if you're not a creative person as myself.

Level creating isn't only what this game has to offer, you can also check out other people's levels in the course world. This makes it seem as though it's an unlimited Mario game to an extent. You can also try out many sample levels with the Ten Mario Challenge which can also spark some ideas. Or even feel free to use The One-Hundred Mario Challenge, a mode which gives you 100 lives and randomly chooses levels that others have posted, according to the difficulty you want of course. A new addition, Event Courses is also a pretty fun thing to check out. This allows you to play courses that are part of several different events from all around the world and allows you to unlock more mystery mushroom costumes along the way.

There are some cons with this game though. Going back to some of the original games that the four styles were based on, you can see many different elements that you never see in Mario Maker. Of course, I didn't expect them to include every single element, but maybe more of a choice. This is something we may see in a future update to the game. One thing this game is especially missing is slants, maybe it would make the game a bit too complicated for a younger audience, but it seems as though it should be something mandatory.

Overall though, Super Mario Maker is an amazing game. Offering creativity to minds that could never achieve such things. Although it's missing some content, it still has a lot to offer, and hopefully plenty more to come. That's why I'm giving this game an 8/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Super Mario Maker is a what people would refer to as a "Fan Service" game, or a "Sellout" because the main theme of the game is to, "Let the customer do the work". However, Super Mario Maker is a game that strives to let the user let its creativity run wild. While the system of unlocking more creation tools can seem irritating to the average audience, but it does let the player experiment with the tools they until they have mastered those items. When new items are unlocked the player would have fully utilized the previous unlockables an will be able to experiment with the new tools. The process of uploading levels is well thought out and prevents the player from uploading, "Impossible" levels. The mystery mushroom costumes can be unlocked through Amiibos, but can be unlocked without them so it doesn't force the player to buy Downloadble content (DLC) While the process of finding levels suited for the player's tastes and skill level may be difficult, this can possibly be solved with the, '100 Mario Challenge' as they have three skill choices. However, the game may not seem like much to a person who wants to instantly create a, "Masterpiece" level, but the player's patience is definitely rewarded. However, the player can be entertained with the endless flow of user-created levels. The point is, the game may seem pricey for $60, it really depends on the player's, "creativity" and "Patience", but players can still find fun elsewhere in the game. My final rating is 8.5 Expand

If you're a thoughtful, creative person, you have a fantastic medium to express yourself in this game. Creating levels is easy to do. Further, not only can you *create* the levels, you can have literally anybody in the world play the levels and critique and make comments on them. It feels great when you put your soul into creating a clever level and have someone give you positive feedback.

There are good tools available to help you fine-tune your levels to perfection, including being able to drop yourself into the level at any point and with any power-ups, and a gameplay-path tracer so you can master your obstacle/enemy positioning.

Most of the levels you play will be pretty decent levels that feel very "Mario." That's a very good thing. Occasionally, however, you'll come across incredible, fantastic levels that make you wish Nintendo would hire those people to design levels for the actual Mario games. And then there are other great levels that aren't very long, but rely on execution of a single difficult trick to complete, that will make you feel like you've accomplished something impossible when you finally get it.

The number of n00b-fodder levels is limited by a clever system. When you start the game, you can only upload 10 levels to share, but if your levels are acclaimed by people "starring" them, you will be allowed to upload more levels. This way, the number of levels designed by people who suck at level design are limited while people who make fantastic levels will be able to upload more, thus making better levels available to you.

Oh, and if you don't like a level, you can skip it.

    The not-so-good:
Play a "100 Mario Challenge" and I guarantee you that you'll come across at least one level that bothers you. While there are (rarely) some clever "auto-Mario" stages where you don't touch anything and you're bounced around on springs et al, I hate most of the "auto-Mario" style levels. There are also levels that are neither original nor very "Mario" feeling, or any good at all. And while the addition of special effects can marginally enhance a level, more often than not those special effects are abused to make super, super annoying levels.

Also in the negative column: It's not very fun to watch your kids make levels.

    All in all:
I recommend this game. If you don't have a Wii U, I'd recommend buying one just to get this game, and even though I don't rate it as highly as some other games, I don't usually recommend buying a Wii U just for most other games.

This game is really good to test your imagination when makning Mario levels. You can post your levels online, as well as trying other people's creations, which can give hours of challenges. amiibo functionality is great, as it unlocks costumes that you can still obtain in the 100-Mario challenge. You get tons of items and space to create the greatest level in Mario's history, and even choose the visual style (from the original Super Mario Bros, SMB 3, Super Mario World and New SMB U). All of this, and you get a game that is almost endless.

However, it's drawn back by huge flaws. Some levels online are just bland and uninspired. The 10 and 100 Mario challenges feel like filler content sometimes. Your experience depends on your levels's popularity. And the biggest flaw is that, if you have Parental Controls on your Wii U, you get the most mediocre Mario game of all time (Mario Maker without online deserves a 5/10, or even a 4/10, A.K.A., the 3DS version I did not even think about playing).

But Super Mario Maker will still give you a lot of fun most of the time. Thousands of online levels give the game HUGE replayability, which is something many Mario games lack. If you are a huge Mario fan, this is the game for you. It's a good game, and you can expect many great things about it. Just try to keep those expectations not too high, because if you expect a masterpiece from a level editor, it's quite likely that you'll feel dissappointed.

I wouldn't give too much credit though, there are some people who've single-handedly outdone this concept, such as Hello's Engine for GameMaker. And that's free!

But, since not everybody's knowledgeable about things like that, I guess this will have to settle for the sake of ease-of-access creativity sharing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Super Mario Maker saved the WiiU. From the premade levels to the millions of player-made levels available online, this game will provide countless hours of amusement, no matter your skill level. Who knew a level editor could bring so many hours of fun to your life? On a lesser Nintendo system to boot?

    -------------
    Difficulty:

Not much to say about difficulty here. The game has its premade levels which only really require an average skill level to defeat. Online, levels range from Easy to Super Expert depending on Clears VS Total Plays. 1 Play is every time you start the level or die and restart. However, this system is nowhere near perfect. It often will put annoyingly difficult levels in the Normal or Expert category because only players with high skill levels really played them. Thus, you can, unfortunately, find Kaizo levels in Normal.

    ---------------
    Gameplay(Level Creator)

The "Maker" part of Mario Maker, this mode is (duh) where you create your Mario levels. There are tons of different obstacles, enemies, and platform types to unlock, as well as the 4 different themes based on older Mario games. There are endless options for level design, so unless you're TRYING to be a copycat, your level will be unique from all the rest out there. The editor itself is fluid and well-fabricated. It is easy to make your vision into reality, though there are limits on the amounts of things you can use. You will need to keep that in mind when creating a course.

    ----------------
    Gameplay(Course World)

This is where you will be spending the bulk of your time in this game. From here, there are three different options: 100 Mario Challenge, Creators, or levels.

Selecting Creators allows you to view the top creators based on star count. You can go from Weekly to All-Time leaderboards to find the most popular creators easily. The 'Following' tab is where you can see all the creators you followed, which is simply an easy way of keeping track of whose levels you'd like to remember.

Selecting Levels brings you to the big world of Mario Maker. From here, you can enter specific Course IDs, check out the Highlights of the day, New Arrivals, or Difficulty-based leaderboards. Remember, though: the system is not flawless, so a level in Normal could end up having a bunch of Midair shell jumps if enough Kaizo players play and beat it quickly. You can also view your bookmarks on the official website.

Finally, the YouTube phenomenon, 100 Mario Challenge. So many YouTubers played multiple attempts on the varying difficulties, most popularly Super Expert. These modes take random levels from the course database depending on the selected difficulty, gives you a set amount(8 for Easy, 16 for Normal and Expert, 6 for Super Expert) of them to complete with 100 lives. You can skip levels in the challenge, so unless you're doing the popular Super Expert No-Skip, you can feel free to skip any levels too difficult. This is one of the best parts of the game.

    --------------
    Mechanics

Again, pretty short section. Its the classic Mario mechanics of jumping, running, spin jumping in World and U themes and using power-ups if any are given. This is a platforming game. If you dislike the genre, maybe move on to the next game. Unless you like the ABSURD amount of automatic and music levels. These levels are generally well made, but there are simply too many of them overshadowing the fun platforming levels available. You really need to dig sometimes to find a good level.

This goes back to the difficulty system. Most of the time it is stable and consistent, but it isn't too long before you will get a curveball thrown at you.

    ----------
    Conclusion

Super Mario Maker is one of the best WiiU games to date, only under a select few that really shined despite the WiiU being worse than the Switch. For old and new fans alike, this game brings Mario players together to create and play one another's levels and challenge each other. If you are a Mario fan, this game is simply a must-have.

This is a good game, but what may upset you is that if you upload a course, after a few weeks it WILL be taken off. Another thing they don't tell you is that you can shake some things and they change to something else. And despite a few flaws, it still is fun to make your own Mario levels.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Once you unlock what you want to use, especially features (not just items/terrain/monsters), the editor goes from a light novelty to fantastic and addicting. I've already logged many many hours on the game and have enjoyed nearly every minute of it. While there are a few things keeping it from perfection, the editor is great.

The modes of play, however, are fairly abysmal. If you don't want to find a specific level (which can be challenging for a variety of reasons, like typing in a specific code), you have a 10 mario challenge and a 100 mario challenge. That's it.

The major problem I have with the game is that players want to beat the challenges. By this, I mean they want easy levels. Doable levels. The problem here is best understood by the following facts.

    1. You only have so many lives to make it through so many levels.
    2. With limited quantity of lives, if the level doesn't seem beatable for you in 3 or so lives.. it's safer to skip it.
    3. This means a challenging level, while doable, will not get "good marks". Even if it's a great level and would otherwise be fun for the player.
    4. No good marks, no one plays your level.
    5. No one plays your level, no need to make levels.

So you can be a jerk, make impossible levels, and then your levels get skipped.
You can make challenging levels, totally doable, but you still get skipped if the player isn't quite skilled.
You can make gimmick levels.. and not always get skipped if the player figures out the gimmick quickly.
Or you can make easy and/or self-completing levels.. and get tons of stars. Not fun for many, let alone everyone.

For a game where the players design the levels, the designers of the game itself didn't seem to give much thought on what play modes they introduced or how the mechanics of them would impact level design.

My suggestion, go ahead and get the game. It's a blast. However, in a couple years.. it might be FAR better than it is now (web portal coming this Dec :D). If they have a release for the NX system (or a sequel), I know I'll buy it in a heartbeat. System and all just for a mario maker kind of game.

PS: I bought the Wii-u just for this game alone and while I considered returning it, with friends to play your levels, it is totally worth it.

Super Mario Maker is one of the first games I show to someone who comes over to visit. At the end of the day, I just can't play it longer than 20 minutes at a time. The game allows for some amazing things to be done with the mechanics, but it also lacks a sense of purpose at the same time. I find myself wondering why I bother unlocking all the new Mystery Mushroom costumes that are released regularly as "event maps". Usually requiring little more than running to the right side of the map for your prize. There are several modes for a fun challenge, but again almost no purpose at all except the surprise of the player's levels.

Don't get me wrong, I have fun with this game every time I play it. It just don't hold on to me for long. I think part of this is that the potential competitiveness this game could have is not being used by Nintendo. Only recently did Nintendo add a feature that records the fastest completion time for each player's map. Achieving the record will leave your time and username for all to see, and it is permanently attached to the map's tab. Very cool, the right direction.

But Nintendo needs to push this further. Else, they could add more tools, like adding creator abilities to modify the level's rules for completion. Rather than simply tagging the flag pole at the end of the map. The whole experience constantly reminds me of it's price tag.

Perhaps had I got this game on the Christmas Sale of $35 I would be singing a different tune. However, when the entirety of the game's intelligent content is precariously created and unfortunately hard to reliably find, the consumer is left wondering where the $60 is going toward, the ability to play player's created content or Nintendo's ability to create the player's ability to create content?

1.There are way too many crappy levels that are either extremely difficult because of cheap invisible blocks,or dull and uncreative ones where you literally do nothing and watch Mario make it to the end of a level(this is a trend in the community). There are some truly creative and fun levels in there, but they gets overshadowed by the pile of bad ones.
2.You are way too limited at the beginning, where you can only use a certain amount of objects before a new shipment comes the next day.I'd rather just have all the materials right when I get the game instead f having to go through the process of resetting my Wii U timer. Not only that, you can only upload 10 levels at a time. The problem with this is there are WAY too many levels out there, and only 3 or 4 people are going to play your level per day.So you're forced to beg your friends to star your levels so they don't get kicked off the server in a month. You can eventually upload more levels with a certain amount of stars, but you'll probably need to beg your friends to do that.

While it seems like a good concept on paper, the entire game feels like one giant gimmick. You'll be relying on other players to play through courses. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, a large portion of the community seems dedicated to strange, artful or down right insane stages. There's not nearly enough fun, standard stages to go around.

Further, the lack of elements from almost every game, be it enemies, power-ups, game mechanics or elements ruins part of the game. There's a lack of bosses, only featuring bowser and bowser jr. There's no slopes and the stage, music and sound selection leaves something to be desired.

Also, the transition between game's enemies and elements don't look look or feel right. I wish they would have limited content to their perspective games instead of allowing so much cross-over content.

    Issues
    1) WHY DO I NEED TO UNLOCK THE BUILDING BLOCKS?! from the second I turned on the game I was already slightly unhappy as I wanted to build levels with more than goombas and koopas

    2) Why are there sooooooo many enemies and tiles missing? For being the same price as their AAA titles, this game could have at the very least included Blargg from super Mario world, or you know, hills you can slide down

    3) User made levels. I commend Nintendo for trying to make a community based game, but 90% of the levels are just horrible. If a level has 5 bowsers, I just quit, there is no fun in that level.

    4) AGAIN WITH THE CODES?! haven't they learned from the DS that absolutely no one likes friendcodes? the same goes for level codes. I should be able to search based on Miiverse name.

In short, Nintendo really missed the mark in my opinion. I am sure they will fix it with DLC, but it shouldn't have to come to that. As a consumer my only request is to get a finished game that I can play from day 1 without needing to unlock everything in order to play. This is 2 games in a row where Nintendo went this route and I am not a fan.

Had they finished the game, it would 10/10 for sure, but I can't in good faith give a half finished product anymore than a 6/10

Did you use them to make "screenshots" of your own levels in a mario game you wish you could make? I did, i even put Yoshi in it, which made absolutely no sense at the time, but i didn't care.

Well now you can actually make that "screenshot" you made in Mario Paint into an actual level, and Nintendo encourages you to make it NOT make sense. Put Bowser in a clown blimp, with 5 other bowsers or heck, anything else on top of him.

Or, if that's not your thing, go ahead and play our levels that we made... (why it got a 6, incoming)
But that's where it falls, since people have a no rules access, you can get into some pretty nutty stages. Some of which, depending on your 1337 retro Mario skillz. can be simple as a speed run, or an end as soon as you step into a stage.

All in all, i agree though, it's a wicked idea, Nintendo....

I like how you can create Mario levels with relative ease in this game. Of course if you want your levels to actually be how you want them to you've entered the real challenge in this game. The course creator is way too basic. I cant even count how many times I've had a great level idea only to find out it doesn't work. Not because there would be no way to do it but because I have no advanced options. I guess they have to make it easy to learn for all the ten year olds that play this game but it really makes me mad.

Another thing I dislike about this game is how you can only upload so many levels. I understand why they limited it but for people like me who have no way of getting the word out and actually make decent levels it feels like I'm not being sold the full game. Unfortunately if you take away the limit you're left with even more terrible levels. You really have no way of winning. Maybe there should be a quality check where people can rate the levels but even that could be manipulated.

This brings me to my next complaint. The terrible levels. So not only is the making part frustrating but the playing may be even worse. There are so many people who put no effort into their levels. They just get a bunch of enemies or just add a dev skip so they don't actually have to beat their level. I've played so many bad levels that I cant even think of anything clever to say about it.

In conclusion this game is flawed. Very flawed. The fact that it is so expensive is even worse. But is it the worst game? No. Although it's definitely not one of the best things to ever come from Nintendo. Lets just hope that if they make a sequel they fix this.

The Star system doesn't feel reliable, since it doesn't seem to really reward players for making good levels that much and there is really no way to discourage players from making bad levels. The search feature is also largely incomplete, as there's no way to search for a level by name and it's extremely easy to not be able to find a level again.

The challenge modes are also largely disappointing. Since it's completely random which levels you get, you'll very often end up with levels that are either terribly designed or were specifically designed to steal lives from you, with no way to punish players for doing this. This is especially true in the higher difficulties, where it is completely possible to end up having half of your lives taken from you without being given much chance to avoid losing them.

Overall, I will name this as a good first effort, and simply hope they add more to any hypothetical second game.

Yes, it's classic Mario and you can make levels. That may be enough for some people, but the game is extremely limited, which hurts creative potential. Also, the unlock system is one of the worst I've ever come across. I'd rather have every item available from the start, since the starting items are really not enough to build anything noteworthy. An unlock mechanism was simply unnecessary, since the level of content is lackluster to begin with. I would imagine most of the top scores for this game are from folks who don't leave their Nintendo bubble. Expand

But when you give people with no experience in level creation the tools and audience to do so, it turns out they squander that opportunity.

You can create your own Mario levels, share them with friends, and play other people's levels, but once you realize the levels people upload range from gimmicky "don't move and watch all the crazy things that almost kill you in this on-rails level," to "look at how insanely difficult this level is because I love Kaizo Mario" and "I'm 11 and what is game design," you quickly start to feel some buyer's remorse.

It's reminiscent of Little Big Planet, where anyone could make levels, but most people make terrible levels. When you make a game where the ONLY thing you can do (besides create your own stages) is play other people's generally lackluster levels.

The game controls great, there's multiple game styles you can choose from that actually give you different abilities (original Mario is basic, Super Mario World has spin jumps, New Super Mario Bros has wall-jumping, etc) but when the game's only attempt at a single-player is "try to beat 10 random user-created levels and be rewarded with literally nothing," then you get a game that's basically a really cool gimmick that delivers no extrinsic rewards.

There are TONS of cool, interestingly-made levels, but they're absolutely drowned out by the onslaught of terribly made joke levels where you hit a coin block and a bunch of confetti and annoying sound effects pop out, as well as a slew of levels designed to be so hard that you might have found a new fetish by the time you manage to beat it.

It tries to create something interesting to players by letting its community create hundreds of levels every day, which sounds really interesting, however this is also its weakness. For example, the game gives you the option to play what it calls "Courses" which is divided into 5 categories. One is exclusively used for official levels made by Nintendo itself and people from magazines such as Famitsu and etc. They tend to be quite easy and straighfoward, and at the end of the level you can earn a Mystery Mushroom, which can make Mario transform into a different character (Link, Wario, even Pokémons). You can use these mushrooms to make your levels more interesting. You can also choose to play 4 different type of courses: Easy Course, Normal, Expert and the new Super Expert courses. All this courses were made by the community, not Nintendo. And here's the main core of the game and that's when the whole thing starts to fall apart. You may find yourself playing a lot of interesting levels made by people. Levels that are challenging, engaging and sometimes punishing but not unfair. This is Super Mario Maker at its strongest. You really feel entertained playing this levels and you want to play more of those...But, this is not frequent, actually you'll spend more time playing short, lazy and confusing levels that probably will make you want to throw your controller through the window. Unfortunately most levels are horribly made. They tend to drive you to door traps, unfair deaths and sometimes ask you to use a move so complex or hard to pull that only expert players can do, and you have no choice but to skip (Thank God for this option) these levels and try another one. Sometimes they are too easy to the point of being ridiculous. You pick up a invencibility star and run through dozens of enemies until you hit the final flag pole. You can see how lazy the person is to create something so dull and boring like that. And since the game picks random levels for you to play, there's no way to avoid these kind of unfair or boring levels. But you'll notice this the first half hour that you'll spend playing this game because, unfortunately, there are more boring levels than good ones in this game.

Of course SMM is also about creating. And this is the most interesting part of the game. The tools that they provide you to create the levels are awesome. I never thought i'd like to use them so much. You can easily spend 2-3 hours elaborating a level and you can actually have fun creating them and then testing them. It's intuitive, easy to learn and really, you can do anything you want, basically. But be aware, after you upload the level don't expect to have many people playing it. I did 5 or 6 levels and each one had 3 or 4 people playing it. One week later, nothing has changed. Which means that soon my levels will be deleted and forgotten whereas people who made horrible levels managed to get at least 5 stars (the "Like" from SMM) or even more, it's frustrating. When you upload a level, the servers tries to put your level into one of the 4 types of courses, but the thing is, you have thousands of levels being made everyday, so sometimes your level will be forgotten and no one will be able to play, unless you have friends to help you out or if you beg on the internet asking anyone to play your level and to give you a star, otherwise you'll lose your levels really soon because Nintendo tends to delete levels that no one plays or ones that don't have many stars.
All in all, Super Mario Maker tries to compete against the likes of LittleBigPlanet or even Project Spark. It succeeds? No. Because this game it's limited compared to the other two where you can create dozens of different things using a more flexible tool to create levels. It is entertaining? Yes, if you know the right codes to play the right levels, but if you try to play a whole course, especially Expert or Normal, you'll find a lot of frustrating and horribly made levels that only have the purpose to troll you as much as possible. And to me, challenging is different than trolling. When i play this game i want to play challenging levels that will make me a better player and feel accomplished not frustrated because of invisible blocks or death doors. And the creating tool is awesome, but you'll have to beg for people to play your levels, otherwise it will be deleted before you know it. At the end of the day i can't really recommend this game at all, apart from the creation tool where you'll have fun creating levels on you own, but that's it. Other than that you'll only find a half game here, an overpriced one. SMM is only as good as its players, and maybe that's why this game is so frustrating and boring, because many people don't know the meaning of having fun, just the meaning of trolling. So if the people who play this game are trolls, then of course the game will be nothing less. Super Mario Maker is the @TayandYou of the Wii U.

For free! There are a few additions that aren't available online, such as certain enemies and objects being redrawn for the different games, but there is an appalling lack of Yoshi in any mode. There hasn't been much substantial content added since the game's release either, unlike Splatoon, which has had many more additional game modes, maps, weapons, equipment, and a new level cap, in addition to revamped Ranked gameplay. There's just not much "fun" to be had in creating levels, aside from the first few minutes of making a field of clown car-riding giant Bowsers, or something silly like that.
On the other side of the coin, playing other people's levels is hit or miss. The levels I enjoyed the most were the musical levels, which played a tune as you held left and ran. These were also my favorite levels in the online version as well, so it was nice to see them return. But aside from that, the tool is too limited to make stages that are actually reminiscent of the official games. The Super Mario World mode is missing the slanted platforms vibe, as well as much of the charm of the world map that made the game most fun to begin with. As such, none of the levels created in Super Mario Maker really 'feel' like an official level made by the devs. They all feel... off. It's clear to see that they are user-created, and as such, are lacking the polish of the official levels.

Despite the "limitless potential" of "infinite stages" from other users; Mario Maker is sadly far too limited to truly make something of value, and its price most certainly does not reflect the amount of content contained therein.

Super Mario Maker is fun but there are problems, when you start the game you think hey I can make any level I want from these four games but NO you have to unlock the other Mario games and the other things for animating your levels. I didn't know that well that was a really **** decision on NINTENDO'S part.

Super Mario Maker is more than a just an amazing toolbox for content creation — it's also a big, beautiful toy box filled with all sorts of incredible, remarkable toys each with individual parts for you to spend hundreds of hours falling in love with. Even if you've never liked this type of game, Super Mario Maker may just win you over.
