Don't get me wrong, the map has been expanded with the sky islands and caves and different activities for the player but to explore the map but to just wonder around to explore a then unknown terrain was a major part of the experience in early and mid game in bote that is, unsurprisingly not present for returning players. Of course it's not easy to just make a new map considering it's a direct sequel, it would probably not make sense and some fans would get mad for it. But still i wouldn't mind if they had replaced the map for a new one and the NPC not acknowledge it. The game has been in production for 6 years after all and to reuse so many assets is rather disappointing Expand

The reuse of the map with changes is great, there are caves now to explore, new locations with people living in them, new shrines, and more. There’s too the sky with the islands that contain puzzles to obtain rewards and tests to unlock shrines. And the underground, which was something many fans were asking for, it is spooky and has dangerous enemies, and many ways to traverse it. They gave us traditional Zelda dungeons, a proper hooking story, new characters, new abilities, new materials, new ways to do whatever you want to accomplish.
It’s clear that Nintendo listened to the fan’s critics about BotW and demands for the sequel.
There’s one thing many can dislike, which is the graphics and performance. It’s running on a Switch, you can’t ask them to magically make it more capable of better graphics. There are some fps drops using the abilities, when you are fighting enemies or making big fires, but it not that it is unplayable. Personally to me it looks great, the art style helps the game to not look that bad considering the resolution it runs at. Most realistic-looking old games age really bad compared to the current ones with similar style, that won’t happen to TotK, just like it didn’t happen to Wind Waker and Skyward Sword. With a file size of only 16 gigabytes, they managed to make a better game than the ones that are a hundred gigabytes. For those points that I mentioned, and more (being a Zelda fan makes it more special to me), The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom deserve a perfect score of 10/10.

Amazing game, takes everything that made BOTW awesome and builds on it. You can sink hours into the game technically accomplishing nothing and still have a blast. Only negative is some frame rate issues when using ultra hand( mostly in sky from what I’ve noticed) but not enough to deter from the awesome gameplay or the immense interactive open world

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Regardless of all the negative reviews, this games amazing. Most of the negatives I've seen basically say "I'm someone who only plays CoD on my $5K PC" or "If the games not mainly focused on being a book it's bad" or funnily enough "I hated BotW and I hate this too!". So it's just people who wouldn't be playing Nintendo games, or this style of game anyways. I have 80 hours, all story, e.t.c. and in the whole time I recall ;) that it dropped frames 3 times when I obviously went crazy with explosives. It's like people care more about the game leading up to be exactly what they expected a Zelda game to be and just don't care if it's fun. The game does some minor changes to the overworld, but the sky and depths together make it effectively double the map with even more exploration. If you cared about weapons breaking, use the weapon, get its durability low and fuse a rock to it and it'll be full the 1st time. Hate slipping? actually explore the caves and get sticky lizards and make a potion or get the frog armor. does the story not please you like a 500 page novel? It's a freaking open world game the story can't let the game truly be at your pace without being very minor. Like seriously reading comments makes me think if these are your standards that everything needs to be changed, how in the world do we have the same CoD, Fifa e.t.c. games every year, and not just that how do ANY games get direct sequels, like Horizon, Dark Souls, or Halo, those games do what this game did, change a few mechanics, build off the previous and have typically similar story beats while still being familiar enough you don't feel isolated to having 1 favorite. Long winded way of saying I genuinely believe that people either stopped giving games true chances or this is being review bombed. Expand

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom takes everything its predecessor did right, and made it better. Fantastic dungeons, fun bosses and an insane finale are all things this game did right. It felt longer than Breath of The Wild but never dragged on. The Demon King Ganondorf boss fight really had me on the edge of my seat and before the final battle, when you had to fight all of those enemies had me smiling all the way. However the best thing about this Game of The Year is easily, Sidon returns. Expand

Tears of the Kingdom is phenomenal! It did not miss a beat from the excellence of Breath of the Wild. Many of Botw weaknesses, like the weapon system or climbing mechanics got improved and actually turned into major strengths, making it easier and more rewarding to explore Hyrule and challenge all kinds of enemies.
The 4 new main abilities of Link manage to replace the old ones perfectly. They also create many new ways for players to solve puzzles, with most of the shrines being solvable in a much more creative manner than the intended one.
While the base game had some performance issues, the day-one patch fixed them and so far I have not experienced any frame drops that impacted my gameplay.
Because of all of this, I think that the game overcame the predictions of just being a Botw DLC by a lot. It offers way more content than its predecessor, probably more than twice as much and discovering this content makes more fun than ever before. This game is undoubtedly a contender for being one of the best games of all time.

What makes totk so special is the sense of freedom it offers. You're free to explore the world at your own pace, discovering hidden secrets and uncovering the mysteries of Hyrule. The game's mechanics are intuitive and innovative, making it easy to pick up and play, but with enough depth to keep you engaged for hours on end.

The game's visuals are stunning, with a vibrant art style that's both beautiful and immersive. The music is equally impressive, with a sweeping orchestral score that perfectly captures the sense of adventure and discovery.

But what really sets totk apart is the attention to detail. Every corner of the world is filled with unique characters, hidden treasures, and memorable moments. The game's puzzles are challenging yet rewarding, and the combat is satisfyingly strategic.

Overall, totk is the best game I've ever played. It's a game that offers endless hours of entertainment, with a sense of freedom and adventure that's rarely seen in modern gaming. If you haven't played it yet, I highly recommend giving it a try.

This is no masterpiece this is a cheap lazy cashgrab.. Of course it's not a trash game but this at maximum deserves a 7/10 because it fails at so many places...

...annoying cooking, breaking weapons, breaking master sword...
...no surprises, no awe moments, no breathtaking scenes...
...most boring lazy cringe story with least possible effort and creativity...
...complete 1/1 copy of gameparts like plateau area, plot revelation, end boss battle, ...
...Amibo icons in the MENU and everywhere...!!!!!
    ...bad ui choices interupting battles...
...no battle is worth the amount of resources lost in contrast to the loot you get...
...lies to the players faking drama when telling zelda's transformation is permanent...
...Link looks like a dumbass not telling anyone he knows what happend to Zelda since like 80h+ of playtime ago...
...makes no sense lore wise and in regards to BotW (missing divine beasts, missing sheikah, ...)
...patching master sword and duplication glitch shows Nintendo doesnt want you to have fun...
...objectively this cant even be 96.... 80% graphics, 60% music, 50% plot, 80% gameplay, freshness 60%... if this were a 96 there'd hardly be anything to criticise yet there is tons of stuff...
...no motivation to beat Ganondorf... does he even do anything remotely bad?! people live happily...
...ending could have been great but missed opportuniy with much too easy Zelda catching (also you fall in the water so without you she would have fallen in the water anyway...)
As a sky island dlc this would have been ok, a complete game with empty underground and sky islands wasn't needed... maybe liked by fanboys and kids building ***** for tiktok videos (yay game of the year!!)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Legend of Zelda Tears Of the Kingdom is one of the greatest games to ever release. Many games give open world freedom so you can do whatever you please, but this game goes beyond that in so many ways. You can fuse whatever you want to you weapons. Meat sword? You got it! Spear spear? I guess if you want. You can go on with so many combinations whether you want them to be hilarious or seriously powerful. Another this g you can do in this game is using ultrahand to connect objects together. You can make insane vehicles, go to the sky barrier (I tried it), make homing laser robots. The possibilities are infinite! I personally like connecting tons of rockets to vehicles so that they go super fast. The story itself isn't extraordinary, but decent, but the model for ganondorf is beautiful, the cutscenes can be very impressive for a switch game, and the final dragon battle is a super climactic ending (although the battle isn't very fun). I do think that Zelda getting undraconified at the end is kind of weak and makes the plot less meaningful, but it's a minor issue. Another detail is the amiibos. The new link amiibo does not have impressive drops at all, but the other amiibos give paraglider fabrics which are very nice additions which add lots of fun to your gameplay I personally like the windwaker one and the demon king one. Another thing I like is that you don't need to rely on amiibos and RNG to get the armor from other games. They are located in the depths underneath hyrule. The depths are actually really fun to explore. Even though they're stressful at first, you eventually find your way around. I currently have 102/120 lightroots. Anyways I think that the legend of Zelda tears of the kingdom is an excellent game and is up to par with ocarina of time and link to the past. Expand

As a long time fan of this franchise and lover of all the games, it makes me feel ill to say that I am deeply and wholly disappointed with Tears of the Kingdom.

The additions here don’t justify the six year development period considering that all of the map, assets, and animations have effectively been reused from BotW. The game plays the same and is visually indistinguishable from its predecessor. The combat mechanics are untouched, they have made steps to optimise it by adding weapon fusion which is a great addition. But largely the fighting is identical which is a massive let down. The enemy variety is a scarce improvement, barely worth mentioning. It’s the structure of the game that really falls flat for me. It’s the same formula done almost exactly the same as it was in BotW. Visit 4 main locations, complete an arbitrary story episode with the sage, do the temple and watch the same cutscene 4 times. It is horribly disjointed and makes it impossible to become invested in any of it. The sages don’t interact with each other at all and only with Link who has the personality of a boulder. The memories are an even less welcome recurrence. They give us glimpses of a cool looking story - but one that is so far removed from proceedings, told out of order, only highlighting key events and above all completely nothing to do with Link outside of mention from Zelda. I cannot get invested in a story that I’m not involved in and one told in such a scattershot and incoherent manner. Ganondorf is a total waste and takes no active role as a villain outside of the beginning and end of the game. Not counting the memories because they are not active and are optional. The supposed compensation for this sub-optimal story is the vehicle building, sky and depths. I’m not 7 years old, so the vehicle building did nothing for me and was very jarring to watch them focus on such a random mechanic that no one asked for instead of addressing the glaring fundamental issues that plagued BotW. Very odd. As for the sky and depths, they’re a sight to behold at first and harbour some really cool main story content… but it becomes all too apparent that all of the optional stuff is horribly shallow, copy and pasted non-content. The breadth of an ocean with the depth of a puddle. The temples? I like the temples. They’re not on par with the series’ best, but they’re a drastic improvement over BotW’s measly offerings, that goes double for the bosses too. The other abilities are also fun to muck around with. I just feel that after 6 long years, we were going to be getting something a lot more refined that this. This simply is not Zelda, I appreciate them trying something new… but they already did that with BotW, it just all feels too experimental and sandbox-y for me to engage with. This is obviously very far from a bad game, but I would be willing to call it the worst 3D Zelda title which pains me to say.

Each and every Zelda game that has come out before this one has its own unique story, structure, gameplay mechanics, combat, temples, characters and overall feel. They each have an IDENTITY. Something that TotK sorely lacks as the vast majority of what comprises this game, is owed in its entirety to BotW. It's little more than a repurposed version of that game with a boatload of gimmicks to distract us from that fact. That's not to say that every addition here is superfluous, that is obviously not the case, but that is all they are - additions to a game that already exists. True innovation is simply not here, or at least nothing like the originality and freshness that every other game in the series exhibits.

Tears of the Kingdom is an expansive reimagining of Breath of the Wild, not a new Zelda game and while I had a lot of fun for a while, once I removed the rose-tinted glasses I can't help but feel incredibly let down.

Even thou the map is the same as the previous game, the map doesnt feel the same, since time has passed and changes happened from the times from calamity Gannon. Also i want to add that there are two more map layers to explore, the deeps (practically as big as the surface) and the sky.
Story is emotional, is paced and more objective based, which makes the experience less chaotic than the first one. You cannot finish the game without finishing the main objectives (which didn't happened on BOTW, where you could go fight the final boss in the first hour of gameplay).
This is for sure one of the best games i have played.

Sometimes fusing stuff feels incredibly compelling and enjoyable, while at other times it's a real hindrance and annoyance. Half the time there are simpler solutions than spending 5-10 minutes constructing some sort of contraption, and I found myself skipping fuse activities altogether. A generation brought up on Minecraft will likely find a lot to love about this new facet of the game, but on balance it left me cold. The rest of the game is just...Breath of the Wild all over again. Same map (with some alterations), same combat mechanics, same...everything. Granted, being rocketed into the sky was never not a thrill, but I'm sad they didn't spend any of the 6-year interval between this and Breath updating anything. Riding a horse, for example, is still a chore, with unresponsive controls -- something that could have very easily been updated for this outing. I really really wanted to love this game, and there were certainly moments where the old thrill came back. Unfortunately, in the end, there just weren't enough of those moments to maintain my interest. Expand

To clarify, The Legend of Zelda is my favourite series in gaming and has never failed to impress, move and floor me with every one of the games.

This is the very first time I've felt let down. And it hurts. I so desperately want to agree with all of the rave reviews, but I just can't.

To me, Tears of the Kingdom is effectively a repurposed Breath of the Wild.

    - There are no fundamental differences with the way this game looks plays or feels. The combat mechanics are untouched and play exactly as they did in BotW (flurry rush and bullet time galore). The fusion mechanic makes the weapons look cooler and adds more longevity to even the weakest of base weapons... but I struggle to care beyond aesthetics when the combat encounters are the exact same mechanically against opponents that are also largely the exact same ones from BotW.

    - The new mechanics are fun to muck around with, particularly "Ascend", however the whole "Ultrahand" vehicle building gimmick never really stuck for me. I only ever engaged with it as a matter of convenience in the overworld, and while the shrine puzzles were mostly well designed, it all felt a bit samey after a while. I understand that this is preference, but when this is the foundation of new mechanics that the game is built around in the stead of actual puzzles akin to the classic titles that made them as fun as they are... I don't see it as a worthy successor.

    - The dungeons themselves are an improvement over the Divine Beasts - however still follow that same formula of do the thing five times then fight the boss. Also, here are the five places you need to go to marked on your map from the get go. It's all so watered down. Half the fun of the old dungeons was navigating, now that's all done for you! At least we've got actual bosses now good god, the Ganon Blights were dismal in BotW.

    - The story is bad. It's a bad story. Not necessarily because of the content, but certainly because of the structure and how it's conveyed to the player. There is absolutely no agency whatsoever as soon as the intro to the game is over. They just do the memory thing again, except this time they aren't even Link's memories and he therefore has no role in the story whatsoever. It's a story that has already happened that the main character isn't involved in that barely affects the game's actual proceedings??? How are we supposed to care? It's so clear that NIntendo didn't want to sacrifice the freedom and wanted to have it both ways, which has resulted in one of the most poorly delivered stories I've ever seen with no weight whatsoever. This is helped in no part thanks to Link's complete lack of characterisation. He is as stiff as he ever was in BotW but at least in the game it was somewhat justifiable as he was a soldier with amnesia. They even had an in game explanation for it. You'd think after years of peace with Zelda he'd have dropped the act just a little. It makes it so embarrassing when scenes are supposed to have weight and he's just standing there looking like he's fresh out of a lobotomy procedure. Agonising to watch. I know he's always been somewhat of a blank slate but come on!

    - Ganondorf, as a result, is a total wasted opportunity. He is hardly in the game at all. Could they not have sacrificed just a smidge of the freedom to provide a sense of stakes, weight and agency to this game?! We already got boundless freedom in BotW, reign it in a bit!

    - The sky and depths definitely exist. They both harbour some great main story stuff, but the remainder of both is just lacklustre. Sky has a load of islands to discover but they all amount to the same thing of just super simple shrine puzzles and then a Rauru's Blessing. The dephs are even worse. A great big giant pit of the same biome strecthed across the enitre map with a whole ton of copy paste enemies and armour from the amiibos. On that note, there is barely any new armour, which is hugely dissapoiting.

    - I don't know some of the new bosses are cool, but there aren't nearly enough. The caves on the surface are cool for a while but most look and play the same. There are barely any new enemy types, hardly matters though because the mechanics are the exact same and aren't conducive to engaging combat. The Map is the same, they've revamped it with different enemy base layouts and way more of them but who cares when it's just the same assets from BotW but more abundant?

I'm being harsh I know. This isn't a bad game, just one that's disappointed me greatly especially considering the development time. I have had enough of this formula, this franchise needs at least some amount of linearity to work!

That's not to say that I don't see flaws. I do. Once again, enemy variety could be better, though it is notably improved from BotW. Dungeons are also better than BotW, but not as good as I could imagine them being. I can go on.
