Thank god then that you can get this games remake on the Switch as it is the closest thing you'll now get to a light gun experience thanks to the use of gyro control (and preferably the use of a good gun-like joycon accessory). The latest patch addresses many issues the game had at launch making it an enjoyable arcade experience romp on Switch with even a horde mode.

The game is almost perfect on Switch... almost. The biggest problem the game has is frame rate in "Performance" mode the game hits UP TO 60FPS, with the regular mode hovering between 30-45FPS, so the most consistent experience naturally comes from the regular mode however it is truly bewildering how the devs couldn't get a simple game like this running a solid 60FPS, or at least a solid 30FPS. The second thing I'd like to see is instead of having to manually center the crosshair with a press of the "Y" button is an option to auto-center the crosshair after 6, 8, 10 or 12 shots. That should then likely solve the problem of inherently inaccurate gyro control. For these reasons I'd give the game 7/10, it could have so easily been a 9 or 10 with proper optimisation. A trick has really been missed by the publisher here as well by not offering this stonkingly good remake of a classic in a bundle that included a gun-like joycon accessory to get the most out of the gyro function.

A must have for light gun game lovers on Switch, less so for other platforms due to a much bigger lack of gun-like controller accessories.

It's a good game with setting adjustments!

People complain a lot that joy con aim does not work. If you adjust the settings of the joy con deadzone to 34/100 + turn off auto aim, it works awesome. Me and a friend just finished it on normal mode and didn't had any troubles with joy con aiming. It kinda felt like a light gun shooter. This comes from a player which still has his psx with

I played through this game 12 times within my first 2 days of purchase. It is so much fun exploring all the branching paths through levels 1-3, and once you are able to unlock the cheat modes the game becomes even more appealing! Hoard mode is so much fun once you have unlocked the Armory, and the 'one shot kill' cheat makes the end of level boss encounters far less time consuming. This game is well worth picking up at 50% or 65% off on sale. It is also a game you are likely to come back to over and over again because it is so easy to 'pick up and play'. Expand

The controls are quite bad, and the game runs very slow. Not worth it supporting such a watered down version of the game.

Yes the graphics and performance are really underwhelming, and it’s short, but it’s still a really fun game. I loved both the arcade original and the Saturn port and I had a great time with this. Maybe one that’s more for long time fans of the series. If they were to do HotD 2, I think I’d prefer a straight up scaled port than a remake in this style.

Such a very well done remake, it captured the House of the Dead arcade feel. Graphics is good, the revamped enemy designs are great, the atmospheric tone and cheesy voice acted dialogues are still there. May only gripe is that the campaign just seemed too short, after we beat the last boss we thought there was going to be more stuff down the road, but the credits roll and I was a little bit disappointed.

Overall it is a good remake, hopefully they add some DLC to extend the campaign mode.

The purpose of a remake is to replicate the original faithfully, while modernising the graphics and sound, and usually adding in some additional content and features to spice up the package. This is the tried, true, expected formula of video game remakes. However, THOTD Remake takes a wholly different approach, chasing "faithfulness" in some areas while making massive changes elsewhere.

Graphically the game looks mediocre. While there is just enough competence and quality here for a passing grade, the game's overall artstyle is bland and cobbled together, focusing on technically remaking the original while keeping none of the charm. The blood splatters and UI look almost cartoonish at times, and entire areas have had their tone, lighting and colour palettes drastically altered from the originals.

Somehow, the music is even worse. For truly unknown reasons, there were licensing issues regarding the original soundtrack, meaning none of the original tunes are present. Instead, we get various tracks of wildly varying quality, that replicate the structure and beats of the originals while remaining JUST different enough to be legally distinct. Most remakes these days include both the original songs, and new remixes, but this remake offers neither. Including the original music in a remake isn't optional as far as I'm concerned, and Sega has had no problem incorporating HOTD 1 tracks (such as Magician's theme) in other games in the past.

Unfortunately, the core gameplay is also lacklustre. The controls are again, "just good enough" but often limiting, and the original game's length leads to a barebones experience overall. While the game does offer some new additions, like Horde Mode, the overall experience is still short.

The House Of The Dead: Remake is not a good game. Five minutes of gameplay will show you how clearly amateurish the game is, and the thought that we may get a similar remake of HOTD 2 isn't exactly making me hyped. This could have been so much better.

Trafiamy do laboratorium korporacji DBR, które okazuje się opanowane przez różnego rodzaju żywe trupy. W The House of the Dead: Remake mamy uratować pracowników laboratorium, walcząc z wylewającymi się ze wszystkich stron hordami zombie.

Produkcję, którą odnowiły ekipy Forever Entertainment i MegaPixel Studio przejdziecie w kilka godzin, a największą frajdę sprawia tu doskonalenie swojego wyniku i odblokowywanie kolejnych osiągnięć. A uratowanie wszystkich pracowników laboratorium do najłatwiejszych nie należy.

Jeśli chodzi o warstwę wizualną gry, to jako „odświeżona wersja” The House of the Dead: Remake prezentuje się naprawdę przyzwoicie.

    Thoughts-
The House of the Dead: Remake has quite a bit going for it- it’s inherently fun, it’s got decent replay value, and above all else, it’s a faithful remake of a beloved classic that does a solid job of paying tribute to the original. It’s got issues though, and not minor ones- which does drag down the experience. The new reload mechanic cheapens the gameplay in significant ways, the game doesn’t look great, and it’s way too short, and doesn’t have enough content on offer, to justify its price for someone who doesn’t have a strong attachment to the IP. The House of the Dead: Remake is a decent throwback, but with a little more meat and a little more polish, it could have been more.

at one point i even managed to 1CC all of mainline game at the arcade

I was excited for this when i saw the announcement trailer back in 2021 and i even pre order this game

the reason i'm giving this remake 4/10 are as follows
    1. the music are said to be inspire by original but after listen to all of them on repeat multiple time , it just doesn't click , it does sounds like hotd music but it's not hotd music

2.I can't believe no one at development team or QA team noticed this and give a pass
to this , that the gun shot sounds are way underwhelming , seriously it sounds like a toygun
if you have play the original The House of The Dead , you will know that the gun shot sound in original were powerful and feels intuitive to use

    3.the difficulty tweaks
this is my hit for me cause it leaves massive bad tastes , in the original almost every encounter you always has a time to react to it and the enemy are fair but still challenge
let's take the very first zombie you met in the game as example
in the original after you have control of your character and gun he'll take few steps walk to get close to you before start attacking
in the remake he's standing ready and position close enough to hit you and if you can't react fast enough he can hit you just within first 1-2 sec of game started

and there's a lot of enemy that weren't this fast in original (chainsaw guy for example) in original he's has moderate speed and has "ok" time winded up animation
in remake he's stupidly fast and feels unfair most of time

Original The House of The Dead has challenging difficulty but still fair most of time
Remake difficulty is everywhere and doesn't feels nice to play

most of zombie will died from 2-3 headshot in original , in remake a lot of them (especially the monkey and fatguy) can still run and hit you even their heads are completely blown off

lastly the final boss , i wouldn't say much , just go watch the youtube video of it and compared to original , dev has ruin his fight so badly despite being one of the most iconic bosses of all light gun games

I have 3 completes playthrough of Remake and i don't feels like playing it anymore , meanwhile i feel like i could go back to original as much as i want and would still enjoy them

this seems like a harsh and bias review , but this is my honest opinion about the game , i feels like the $22.70 that i spent on pre-order are wasted , and i'm not really happy with it
meanwhile i'm willing to spend quarter to play arcade version of original over and over again even i could 1CC clear the whole game.
that's it for my opinion about this game.

The House of the Dead: Remake is a contemporary update of the first game in The House of the Dead series and this remake does a decent job with most elements, giving us a good looking world, competent controls and a very welcome and challenging new game mode. At this level, this remake successfully brings the experience to our day and age. Its performance is affected in the most intense moments, though, especially in multiplayer mode and its long loading times may be off-putting for less patient players.

The House of the Dead remake is characterized by a faithful embodiment of the elements of the original. However, it does not reproduce the sophisticated manipulation and immersion, which are characteristics of the gun shooting genre, so it stays in the remake as a rip-off of the original, not a remake beyond the original.
