Great game. Best Mario Game. Just fun. I absolutely love it. That's my personal opinion, but I just had so much fun with this game. Not perfect, but almost.

An absolute great game and amazing addition to the Mario collection, the only problem I would have with it is that it feels quite short. However the worlds still have a lot to offer and look amazing and have new mechanics for almost every world.

When I first played this game when it first came out I was amazed and I still am. The kingdoms are huge and every moon feels fun to get. This is the Mario 64 sequel everyone wanted (not saying sunshine is a bad game tho). I highly recommend this game as either your first switch game, your first Mario game, or even something to play even if you somehow don't own this game it is a 10/10 must have.

MAN am I late to the party. I'll admit that I was never keen to play switch games back in high school. Of course I played the occasional round of Smash Bros Ultimate and I was always up for the next new Pokemon game whether it be good, bad, or god-awful. But after playing this game, I've had a change of heart for the switch. For a while, I've been trying to figure out what makes this gameMAN am I late to the party. I'll admit that I was never keen to play switch games back in high school. Of course I played the occasional round of Smash Bros Ultimate and I was always up for the next new Pokemon game whether it be good, bad, or god-awful. But after playing this game, I've had a change of heart for the switch. For a while, I've been trying to figure out what makes this game so enjoyable. And while there are several answers to fill in that blank, even after research I had trouble figuring. On the surface it's just another Mario 64 sequel. You explore new lands, you beat up Bowser's henchmen, you hunt down wascally wabbits...the usual. But what's really great about this one, is that the controls are tighter than ever before. And combined with the abilities of his new buddy Cappy, you can achieve some seriously great platforming feats. I still remember how long it took me to learn the careful timing of the wall jump when I was a just kid and it feels great to master it here. Combined with all the other great mechanics...enemy possession, mini-level challenges...the fact that tossing a hat is equivalent to the force of a kick in the face...that's just good stuff man. At the same, nothing really feels forced in this game. Granted you need a set amount of Power Moons to move on, but nothing feels really restricting. The lack of a live system and plenty of fair check points, makes this adventure feel pretty limitless. In my Super Mario 64 review I complained about how easy it was to die in that game...and for the past 20 years, all of the 3D games had an annoying habit of booting the player out of the level whether they reached the goal or met death. And that back tracking really got on my nerves. Now that it's non existent, I can just focus on collecting as much as I can in each stage. I've said once before that one of the most important elements in game design, is freedom. Whether is comfortable controls or enjoyable mechanics, it's vital to give players the joy of exploring a brand new land. Give them the power to conquer great challenges. Game designers that fail to understand that end up relying on pay-to win systems and outdated gameplay mechanics only focusing on making the big bucks. I can only hope that my favorite electric mouse doesn't end up like the Blue Blur. Setting that aside though, I wouldn't call this my favorite Mario game. And that mainly comes down to the game's theme. Odyssey is blend of cartoons and realism. You've got cartoony Goombas mixed in with scary as hell T-Rexes! And while everything looks really good besides the eyes of the soul stealing human NPCs, it never felt tremendous to me. 64 had a magical castle theme, Sunshine was a vacation, Galaxy had space exploration, while Odyssey is just a world tour. It's a good theme especially when you blend it with realism, creating the idea that Mario is entering our world. However, Galaxy still has the more interesting theme. To call this a successor to Galaxy would be hard to swallow. I'd rather think of this as an evolution of Super Mario 64's format. Yeah, its a shame there's no hub area connecting all the worlds...but with all the Easter Eggs in the Mushroom Kingdom, I'm convinced which fans are going to enjoy this game the most. It's a nice reminder that there's a Mario game for everyone. Since this isn't a serious that focuses heavily on story, I think it's safe to say that the Mario developers should focus on creating new styles of enjoyable gameplay rather than the creating a superior sequel. So what's left to say? Well I will say, that the Metro Kingdom levels are amazing. You get to fight a robotic hell spawn, evade a T-Rex on a moped, play a possible sequel to "Shell Shocked" from Mario Party 2, and "Jump up Superstar"...good Star Spirits I love this musical level...ITS SO GOOD! It just MAKES this game! So now that I'm on board with the awesomeness. I'll be really stoked in they pull a Galaxy 2 and make an incredible sequel to follow. By the way, have you noticed how much lore the Metro Kingdom adds to the DK Country games? Whatever, the best way to play this game is too listen to "Jump Up Superstar" on loop while you play this game. It's like the montage trailer just comes to life. I'm really looking forward to returning to this franchise in the future. I won't spoil the ending this game either, its so ridiculous and awesome at the same time that it deserves to be spoiler free. So for all the new players and returning fans, I highly recommend this game. It takes time to adjust, but once get used to the sweet new controls, you can really dance on air. Nothing's stopping from zipping to one kingdom to the next collecting piles of Power Moons with each leap. And with all the untapped potential to go with this gameplay style...JUST IMAGINE. Mario capturing the Ruined Dragon, fighting ol' Tanga from Super Mario Land 2...I don't have much to complain about. Now I just want to dream(: Expand

It's been very long since I played a Super Mario game before, so playing Super Mario Odyssey felt quite refreshing.
However, Super Mario Odyssey pays homage mainly to the older sandbox Mario games, which I haven't played before, and that made my experience with Odyssey interesting but also slighty... complicated.
Now, the story, just like in every other Super Mario game, is not important.

However, Super Mario Odyssey pays homage mainly to the older sandbox Mario games, which I haven't played before, and that made my experience with Odyssey interesting but also slighty... complicated.
Now, the story, just like in every other Super Mario game, is not important.
What's important in a Super Mario game, is the gameplay, and the gameplay in Super Mario Odyssey is the best in any Mario game I've played, and also arguably in any platformer game I've ever played; it's quite crazy, thanks to the excessive amount of different mechanics that sync in well with each other and Mario's moveset.
Visually, it's one of the better looking platformer games I've seen in the past few years, and the music is surprisingly good as well.
Additionally, the level design is detailed and creative, and the areas are fun to explore, albeit smaller than I expected.
Unfortunately though, the story is pretty short and the post-game content is very underwhelming and lackluster.
Also, the bosses are way too easy and repetitive.
My biggest gripe with the game, however, is an unpopular opinion. I know a lot of people won't agree with me on that, and that's fine but... I really don't like the progression system in this game; collecting Power Moons to progress through the story is tedious and it brought down the entire experience at times.
I can somewhat understand why most people like that though.

    Pros:
    + Exciting gameplay
    + Amazing mechanics
    + Beautiful visuals
    + Great level design

    Cons:
    - Short playtime
    - Boring post-game content
    - Bad boss fights
    - Progression system

Super Mario Odyssey is a very well-crafted game and it's arguably one of the better platformer games I've played in a while, but it has some serious annoyances as well.
All in all, it's a very good game but it's also surprisingly unremarkable and a little bit... disappointing.

    Do I recommend it?:
It's pretty fun to play for the most part, so yes.

Super Mario Odyssey is in my opinion probably one of the greatest if not the greatest Mario game ever made, filled with tons of stuff to do and explore, and with a lot of replay value. So let's just begin, the game has 14 kingdoms to explore (17 if you also count Mushroom Kingdom, Dark Side, and Darker Side which are the post-game kingdoms) and they are all amazing and unique in their own way, of course there are some I don't like as much as the others, most notably Snow Kingdom, but all of them are still really good. The game focuses on collecting Power Moons and you need to get enough to escape the kingdom and reach the next one. Most kingdoms are filled to the brim with stuff to explore and some kingdoms, like Sand Kingdom and Seaside Kingdom give a more open-world vibe to the game, but then others like Cascade Kingdom and Lake Kingdom
focus a bit more on the linear sub-areas (Which I also really like). This review would probably be too long if I
would have to talk about every single kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey and how great they are, so I'm not going
to right now. Other than Power Moons there are also Regional/Purple coins to collect in each kingdom, generally
the larger kingdoms have 100 of them and the smaller ones have only 50, while the ones that are just boss battles, (Cloud Kingdom, Ruined Kingdom etc.) don't have any, there are also countless souvenirs and music tracks to collect, and you can play any music track you want at any time you want, which is a pretty cool bonus feature. Now, you might have noticed I still haven't mentioned the main gimmick of this game, the captures. I love the captures in this game, some of them are practically useless, some of them like the spark pylons are extremely important and are basically necessary to beat the game. I like the gimmick because of how unique it is and it's a bit of a break from getting the exact same power-ups every single time in Mario games. Other than that there's not much more to talk about other than the outfits, which were a cool bonus feature too where you can dress up as a lot of outfits (Mostly themed to the kingdom they're bought in). And Luigi's Balloon World, which is a fun extra side-mode where you try to pop balloons that other people placed in a certain kingdom, or you can hide balloons and make other people try to find them. So, overall I love Super Mario Odyssey and it is and probably will always be one of the best Mario games ever made. Thank you for reading.

The settings and characters are all wonderfully creative and evocative, and the gameplay is extremely satisfying. The soundtrack is second to none. Cappy should feel gimmicky (like FLUDD in Sunshine), but the new mechanics for controlling Mario work very well and allow for a relatively high skill ceiling for manoeuvring. And the capture mechanic also works well, although some enemies are more fun to control than others.

The number and variety of Moons to collect is at once a strength and also the game's biggest flaw. There's a fair bit of a padding and a lot of very unmemorable or downright annoying Moons, but at the same time it's very fun and addictive to wonder around one of the kingdoms picking up tonnes of Moons at a time. Very different to previous 3D Marios, and for the most part it works. But less can be more, and would have been in this instance.

An overall excellent game, with lots of quality-of-life improvements over Galaxy, but just short of perfection. Well worth your time.

Each world is jam-packed with love an attenion to detail. The plot is basic but sufficent, TL;DR Bowser kidnapped peach and it is Mario's job to save him. The plot could have been better becuase we have seen the same plot all the way back in 1985 with Super Mario Bros. The love an care this game gets is undeniable. Each world feels real and blessed with life. This time we can change marios apperance with the Crazy Caps store. For some of the Sub Areas it can be repetative to constantly restart again and agian especialy if you haven't played previous Mario 3D games and the motion controls can be unresponsive but can also be intuitive and a blast if you use the right controlers. If you decide to use the switch pro controler or play in handheld mode it isn't great, the true way to play is with detached joycons. Cappy comes in as Mario's cap is shreaded and cappy is his replacement, cappy can 'capture' (posses) any animate or inaminate object. Frogs, dinosaurs and much more. The multiplayer is horrible, the second player becomes cappy and Mario is left defenceless, cappy can infinatly make mario jump into the air and it isn't a great experience. All in all other than the plot (which does have some diiferences) and the poor pro controler play this game is a masterpeice and should be played, the game is 30 hours of fun. Mario Odyssey is a great game with perfect level design and amazing grafics for a Mario game. I would recomed this to anyone who gets the chance. Expand

A fantastic return and modernization of the sandbox style of 3D Mario, Oddysey has some of the best controls, level design, camera controls, and movement I’ve ever seen in a video game. Oddysey’s worlds are always fun to explore, and the player is encouraged to do so by being rewarded with power moons, Oddysey’s equivalent to stars and shine sprites.

Wow. What can I say? Super Mario Odyssey is one of the greatest 3D platformers of all time. Every single world is so colorful and detailed and filled with moons! There really are no words that can describe how insane this game is. The controls are air tight, the platforming is crazy and Nintendo has proven that they are the king of video games once again.

Super Mario Odyssey is an open-world platforming game with many different kingdoms to explore. You meet up with Mario’s new friend Cappy who can help Mario pull off crazy jumps he couldn’t before, and he has the ability to allow Mario to possess enemies and use their abilities. Mario has never controlled so amazing before. If you die, it’s usually your fault. You travel the world collecting hundreds of Power Moons to power up the Odyssey and progress in your quest. The level design is magnificent. It features small kingdoms with lots of small structures and almost no platforming, medium kingdoms with a good balance of both, and huge kingdoms with more platforming sections underground and a massive world to explore. The Power Moons can require platforming, timed challenge, racing, advancing in the main story, wearing a specific costume, or even sitting in front of you for no reason. The game is pretty stable. You have to work for a glitch to even occur. A very small number of glitches are random and almost unnoticeable. The soundtrack makes you want to hum or sing along with it. Mario finally has a song in a video game with lyrics! Jump Up, Super Star! is a good song to listen to. The orchestrated themes for kingdoms in this game just take your breath away. The following are some of my favorites: Jump Up, Super Star!, Cascade Kingdom theme, Metro Kingdom theme, Mechawiggler theme, Jump Up, Super Star! (8-bit remix). This game has a ton of extra content. After the main story, there are hundreds of Power Moons left to collect throughout the 18 kingdoms in the game. There’s also a free online mode called Luigi’s Balloon World where you can hide balloons around the kingdom for other people to find them. You can earn coins and increase your rank as you hide or find balloons. There’s also a VR mode where you travel to different kingdoms to recruit musicians for Pauline. The story is pretty simple: Bowser kidnaps Peach to have a wedding with her while also kidnapping a floating tiara named Tiara. After Bowser hits Mario into the Cap Kingdom, he meets Tiara’s brother named Cappy. The two set off together to save Peach and Tiara from Bowser and his minions. They must travel the world collecting Power Moons as Bowser and his wedding planners, the Broodals, steal items for the wedding on the moon. After saving Peach and Tiara, they go on a world tour to the kingdoms they visited but of their own free will. Mario is the only playable character, but Cappy can be player 2. Mario can buy lots of costumes to wear in the game. With 55 hats and 55 suits, some of my favorites include: Super Mario 64 costume, Wedding outfit, 8-Bit Mario hat, Metal Mario outfit, Diddy Kong costume, and Samurai outfit. Almost every Power Moon in the game is fairly easy to collect, but some increase in difficulty if platforming is involved. When this game has Power Moons that are considered hard, they are really difficult to complete most of the time. The Darker Side of the moon is the hardest level in the entire game. Not the best difficulty for a 3D Mario, but Odyssey is something new. We need time to adjust to the gameplay and become pros. The bosses are all new and unique to the Super Mario franchise. After defeating each boss, the only way to refight them is to fight them on their harder versions. Each boss feels different to fight, and each boss is fun to fight. The graphics, in my opinion, are the best graphics on Nintendo Switch! The environments are colorful and detailed enough to look like Mario. New Donk City looks like a real life city put into Mario! Overall, this game is a must-buy if you have a Nintendo Switch. I’d rate this game a 10/10. Expand

The first Super Mario Bros. was released in 1985 for NES. We came a long way from that game and each one of the new Mario was an evolution of the previous, this one too is no exception, until you realize it's a complete revolution.
Super Mario Odyssey is without any doubt the funniest game I have ever played and it reminded us what a game should be. Many know the iconic phrase that the president of Nintendo America Reggie Fils-Aime said in E3 2017 "... [the game] if it's not fun, why bother? ". Super Mario Odyssey builds its legacy on this phrase, as every single level from the start until the end is a joy.
When I played the game for the first time, I felt so happy that I cannot remove the 2 meters wide grin I had on my face.
Each single NPC, character or enemy can be controlled with your new friend Cappy, that let turns Mario into whichever he trows his hat into. Even object like trees can be controlled. Why would you want to become a tree? Because you can! Because its fun!
Every level it's unique and lets the player choose how to approach it. For every platform challenge, there are at least two ways of dealing with it, making it extremely flexible and replayable. The only exception in what you can and cannot transform are the bosses (which in one case you can transform in it). Even with all the possibilityes you have, I think that Super Mario Odissey has just scratched the surface of it's capabilityes, has instead of keep using one mechanic for long, it immediatly hits you with a new one.
The music are not to the usual Mario game standards, they are to a Super Mario 64 / Galaxy standard. Just magnificent piece of art.
The art direction is possibly the best in any other Mario game, has you never have too much of a single color at screen, but with each level, the personality of the world changes, making you feel differently based on which level you are playing.
There is so much potential that I cannot explain how much I'm begging a sequel to this incredible masterpiece, trully an incredible gaming experience that must be played at some point.
