Sonic Forces, while disappointing, is still a good game. I just wish it would've been better. To see my full review on this game, look at my PS4 review of it. The only difference with this version is the frame rate isn't as good. Otherwise, it's about the same to me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Forces is meant to be Sonic's second part of his 25th anniversary, being his next big 3D game. I'll admit, the game is pretty good and it is an enjoyable experience. But it does have a few glaring issues. I know I gave the spoilers box a check, but a second reminder that this contains big spoilers so read at your own risk. Let's dive into Sonic's most recent 3D game.

Starting with the story, the game centers on the idea of Dr. Eggman getting closer than he ever has to his lifelong goal; turning the world into Eggmanland. For the first time in, probably ever, Dr. Eggman has managed to conquer the world. The story follows the Resistance (consisting of Sonic's friends) as they try to take the world back from Eggman. Along for the ride are Classic Sonic and the custom avatar. Tasked with freeing Sonic and fighting off villains of the past and a new villain known as Infinite, the Resistance inflitrates Eggman's territory to set things right. The story's greatest point is that it's vastly different from the norm. It's not every day that the villain actually wins, even if the point of the game is to undo the villain's win. That's what strikes me as interesting, it's got a unique feel to it. While the story is pretty good, I think there are some problems with the characters, some may be minor nitpicks though. Classic Sonic comes kinda out of nowhere, for no reason and with a pretty flawed explanation too. The returning villains, Shadow, Chaos, Metal Sonic and Zavok, all just turn out to be mass produced copies, with Chaos not even being faced once. Infinite is a mysterious character with lots of potential that is essentially wasted on an incredibly simplistic backstory that only explains how he got his powers and a very weak and cliche drive for said power. Those three points all tie in with one important thing that Sonic Forces kinda bombed; they were all interesting concepts with very poor backgrounds. Trailers prior to release really hyped these things up, making me personally guess how the villains returned, how you'd face them and whether or not Eggman was really controlling all four of them. Playing through it revealed that everything I was hyped for was explained in a single cutscene and was barely touched since. Infinite's character looked amazing, he looked like he could have lots of potential, given what he could do. But his backstory was wrapped up in a single cutscene in the Shadow Episodes and while his role in the main story was huge, after his final fight, he disappears and is not seen or heard from again.

The gameplay aspect is one of the better parts of the game. Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic and the avatar all have their own unique gameplay; Classic Sonic being the original 2D styled gameplay, being pretty much reused from Generations, Modern Sonic having the usual boosting 3D stages and the Avatar makes use of a device known as a Wispon to use Wisp powers and a grappling hook. The Avatar and Modern Sonic stages are by far the best of the three, having good controls and fast pace gameplay Sonic is known for. Classic Sonic is okay in his own sense, but feels a bit underwhelming compared to his gameplay in Sonic Generations. And while the levels themselves are okay, therein lies the second problem; not only are the levels rather short and easy, despite being 30 stages, but they all take place in the same four areas. You're essentially playing different layouts of the same level. Kinda feels more like a New Super Mario Bros. game in terms of level variety.

In the end, Sonic Forces is not a terrible game. It ranks well above Sonic Boom and even outranks Sonic Lost World, but it can't compare to past installments like Sonic Colors or Sonic Generations. The good aspects in the unique story and good gameplay are kinda rivaled by the lack of level variety and half baked concepts that the story has. It's not the next big Sonic 3D title, but it's still a decent game. If you're a hardcore fan of Sonic, then it's a game you'll likely enjoy. But in all honesty, skipping it wouldn't be, dare I say, the end of the world.

Unsurprisingly, the game is at its best when you're tearing through levels as Sonic (in either his modern or retro form) and at its weakest when you're not. Although the create a character component has some degree of charm to it and it is fun to craft your own anthropomorphic super critter, these levels are just never as fun as the Sonic ones, despite the game's wise decision to mostly keep to speedy gameplay and entirely eschew the slow, plodding platforming of supporting cast in previous games.

The story is unintentionally hilarious with dialogue and plot beats that would be cringe worthy if you weren't too busy laughing out loud at them. The tone is completely scatter shot, jumping from flat jokes to mundane chatter and then sometimes even surprisingly dark developments, often all within the same cinematic. The whole Resistance/Knuckle's Army angle feels contrived and by-the-numbers and the introduction of yet another generically named villain is superfluous, even though the character himself isn't that bad.

I had some fun with Sonic Forces, and it is by no means a low point for fans of the troubled series, but there is just really no reason to play it when we already got Sonic Mania, a far superior game, earlier this year.

The story is like Generations but now a little dark you can play as Modern Sonic, Classic, and your OC. The music is great it mixes Dubstep music and electronic and if you play as Classic Sonic you get some Genesis like music. The controls are not so great you could see your self fall off ALOT in the Modern and Avatar stages. In all Forces is a good game but not a Sonic generations but as the Mario Fandom says Mario odyssey is better then Forces. Expand

The gameplay of this game is clunky. The three chracter types (classis, boost sonic, and avatar) feel floaty and have the tendency to either go fast or move slugishly slow for some reason.
Classic sonic comes equiped with his jump spindash mechanic from mania and his gameplay is all as well as the odd feel that the enemy hitboxes feel off.
Boost sonic (modern sonic) is pretty much a mix of 3d and 2d with hold boost button to win finish the stage at times.
The avatar character is a mixed bag of different species with different abilities in the map and use different weapons infused with the wisps from colors called wispons, they control the same as sonic minus the speed and light double jump and boost with different methods of attacks and special abilities depending on the wispon you use at the time unless you play a bird character which allows the use of a hardly existant double jump or the bear which can allow you to hit one enemy and if hit right, have the chance of knocking into other enemies.
Another thing for the avatar side is the slew of customization options for your OC from hats to special fur skins on the accessory side of things which you can unlock by finishing stages, getting S ranks, finishing their strict time trials on some stages and other mission types. The chracter making on the other hand is somewhat lacking and basic with no hair styles besides what you unlock in the outfits and other options but too bad as to detract you from enjoying your character in the game.
There are also stages that gets the Sonic Heroes touch where Sonic and your Character tag team and you both use your skills and abilities which is interesting as well.
While the controls are clunky and floaty, its not entirely hard to get used to at the least and the gameplay can be pretty fun if you are not focusing on finishing the stage as fast as possible.
I played the game on both easy and hard and there really isn't much difference between the two difficulties besides the fact that ring limit for some reason is swapped since it seems where you are capped at 100 on normal and uncapped on hard it just feels switched.
Side challenges and stuff include getting all 5 red rings per stage after which you get enough red rings you unlock extra stage challenges. But oddly enough after you get a stages red rings, you also unlock 5 checkpoints and afterwords moon coin. The odd thing is you don't get anything for collecting these at all.
There is also a Shadow story but its only three stages long but with the dlc you can play as him in boost sonic stages after completing those stages which is a nice touch.

The graphics for the switch handheld are pretty good with no problems whatsoever for being on a smaller screen. The console version is the same but little more better. But with the new engine they made the stages look fantastic but its a shame that stage length is below 5 minutes for most of the stages in game. Sounds pretty much what most people are used to if they played a sonic game. The music fits the game for the most part of it being a modern sonic game and actually enjoyable.

Story is bland. They went for a dark theme this time around like sonic SAT AM style theme on steroids. To summarize, Eggman defeats sonic with his new ally Infinite, an edgelord mercenary who hates everything around him and has the power over mental realities or something causing all of sonics enemies from past games (including shadow) to come back and go for revenge. After Sonics defeat Eggman declares him dead, tails runs off to the mountains, while knuckles and the gang form a freedom fighter group to oppose Eggman and your character is the new recruit. Freedom Fighters discover sonics alive, Your chracter busts sonic out of the death egg, and tails gets saved by classic sonic and doing things with him until everyone meets up again at the freedom fighter base.
The characters in the story has really no character or personality and they are constantly in a dark place even after busting sonic out. Even more annoying Tails, after his development from past games, goes straight out the window he goes back to being whiny and just weak when you would think he would be the one leading the rebellion. Even Amy acted more developed than Tails did in this game.
And classic sonic just seems so out of place in this game. He really had no need to be in the story at all and could have been easily replaced with a second custom character and his stages replaced by bonus stages.

Besides all the cons and stuff the game is still ok on any platform and $40 really isn't bad for a hedgehog engine tech demo. The custom character thing is a nice addition, its fun in small bursts, and would love to see what this engine could really do if they do another installment with the custom character thing as well as any future games

The level design in Sonic Force does leave a bit to be desired. The level design is definitely not terrible, it is just "eh". The levels just don't feel very inspiring or that a lot of thought was put into them. The best part about this game is by far Original The Character (the Avatar you create) Honestly His/Her levels seem to have the most thought put into them, and thats the same with His/Her controls. Original the Character controls pretty good, compared to modern Sonic and 2D Sonic. Sadly the same cannot be said for 2D sonics levels..... man they were quite dull. and 2D sonic controls really badly in this game. Everytime I jump with 2D Sonic, he feels like he weighs as much as a tank. Heck just moving him period feels like he weighs a ton.and for Modern Sonic, I lie that they brought back the boost formula, but like SomeCallMeJohnny said, you really never feel like you get to use the boost formula to it's fullest potential and he completely feels like he is on total autopilot for a good portion of his levels. In the end though, this game is definitely not a bad game, it is just an average mediocre game. PLease understand, I do not hate this game. There is certainly some enjoyment to be had in this game, but at the same time it is filled with control issues (mainly with 2D Sonic) and level design issues. Is this game worth $40? for a big Sonic fan like myself, I would say yes, but for the average gamer? I would say wait for a price drop before buying it. It is definitely a one time playthrough game. The story might be a little dark at times, but for the majority of the game, it works well. And for once in a Sonic game, the bosses are actually a highlight. I loved every single boss fight there was to play through. But despite all of these great things, the game still had problems. For one, the worlds feel very uninspired when you compare them to the awesome worlds of games like Sonic Colors. And it feels like there's a lot of lost potential in the game. I won't spoil anything, but near the end of the game there is this one stage that introduces the prospect of this really cool idea (people who played the game will most likely know what I'm talking about). But about ten seconds into this stage, they instantly ditch the idea and throw you back out into the normal gameplay. That was super disappointing. But the biggest disappointment of all was classic Sonic. The gameplay for classic Sonic was superb in Generations, and Sonic Mania was an excellent way to revive that form of gameplay in it's own title. But Forces provides the most sluggish 2D Sonic stages I have ever played. The stages often feel pointless, and mostly like an afterthought. These stages honestly range anywhere from mediocre to the worst stages in the game. It's not even like classic Sonic has that big of an effect on the game. Sonic Team could have left him out and solely focused on modern Sonic and the avatar, and I think the game would have turned out much better. But despite these flaws, there is still an enjoyable game in here. If you are a Sonic fan, then this is definitely worth your time. If you're not a fan of the series, you still might find some enjoyment in here. Expand

Horrible level design, lousy "story", boring gameplay, forgettable music, lackluster animations (isn't it sad that Unleashed, a game from 2008, is still the best looking Sonic game?) and a dark tone that just comes off as forced more than anything else. The game lacks anything to really say it is better or worse than the two, it really is just the same, just that it makes you feel epic or that you have accomplished something.

Okay, first of all, the gameplay. The gameplay is just like Gen/Colors except the Modern's playstyle is fun and not so linear, while the Avatar stages feel forced and try to hide the fact that they are linear through "multiple paths" and quicktime events. The only fun I really had with the Avatar was pulling of chains with the wispons to take different paths to completing a level and the customization of the character itself. Classic Sonic is just like how he was in Generations, he's fine to play as and offers many paths to follow through on the stage, being very fun to play throughout the progression of the game.

Next, the story. The plot of Sonic Forces itself has to be its strongest component since it does an excellent job in developing characters, their goals, and setting a very dark and gritty tone that you feel sucked into at times. Personally, I found the story to be amazing really well written at times, even though there are some cheesy puns and some very clever ones scattered throughout. Overall I just found the story to be very fun to experience and to watch how it unfolded.

Now, the graphics. I myself do not go into video games for their graphics, but mainly their framerate. I played this game on the Nintendo Switch and have seen some footage from the PS4, playing/watching both until completion. The Nintendo Switch definitely is not the best way to go if you are looking for that crisp 60 fps with beautiful shading and textures throughout. It could only run at 30 fps a with little dips up and down. On the other hand, the PS4 offers everything your eyes are looking for and is truly a great visual experience with a nice framerate. If you prefer the on the go experience like I do though, you would want to go with the Switch port of this game.

Finally, we come to all the negatives I have about this game. The game's animations can feel very stiff and poorly executed with some looking like wood when watching movement in cutscenes. Some of the level design can also come to very linear and fall into a lot of 2D platforming. A LOT of 2D platforming. The boss fights were also very easy to defeat with some being beatable within 20 seconds of the boss even starting, plenty of them feeling like they recycle too much from the previous bosses or that they are just boring to go through in general. The controls for the Avatar are also very complicated and not very fun to really even use, most combat sections feeling like they are only there to consume your level time and artificially extend the gameplay.

In conclusion, Sonic Forces is an okay, but not great video game with fun gameplay that had a very detailed and well-written plot with plenty of dark overtones and EdGe. If you are looking for a Sonic game that tells a great story, has good gameplay, and has an overall good visual style (depending on your console of choice) then this in the Sonic game for you. There is plenty I still did not cover in this review, but I feel it is worthy of improvement, feeling rushed for the release date (again) and in total just being just kind of disappointing.

I've yet to finish the game yet, but so far the story is actually quite interesting, I'm happy to see SEGA going for a darker story like SA2 but still keep the child friendliness of the newer games, it's a nice middle ground. The SONIC Team proves, once again, that they just can't simply put enough "force" into their own Sonic titles to make them a real, worthwhile experience. If you go into this game expecting something a' la Mario Odyssey quality, you'll be severely disappointed. As for it being a Sonic game, well, the downward spiral of 3D Sonic games is still as apparent as ever. This title doesn't even add up to the quality of Generations or Colors, which is ridiculous. Sonic Mania is half the price, and clearly the better option.

The first point is the frame-rate issues. This game goes in a 30fps on the Nintendo Switch, and it even struggles with that. The level design is better, to say the least, but still as random as ever. What I mean by that is that there are points that make you enjoy it, but then you're brought back to the harsh reality that it's terrible again. Red rings and character parts (costumes) are littered throughout the levels, but the diverging paths are downright dumb. Unless you wish to "collect 'em all", it didn't keep me playing the same levels over and over again. They "force" you to play as Sonic, classic Sonic, and your own character creation during different parts of different levels, seemingly randomized in the story (at least to me). At the end of the story, it seems that your character simply had no impact on the turnout other than just simply existing. It's just borderline "okay" and "mediocre", and I wouldn't suggest this title except to the Sonic "enthusiasts". In my own opinion, go grab a GameCube and get Heroes or Sonic Adventure... you'll have more of a blast playing those than this title.

Another point is the amazing reviews from users I'm seeing. "It's not Mario Odyssey, but it's SONIC!!! It's not a great game, has frame-rate issues, I've fallen through the world once, yet... I'll give it a 10/10!!!" This title is nowhere in any way possible a 10/10. Mario Odyssey is a 10/10. Zelda Breath of the Wild is 10/10. This title shouldn't even clock in at a 3 for me because there is just too many issues with the game.

The cleanup from the Sonic fan-base is ridiculous. Save yourself $40-50 and buy another game. Black Friday is just around the corner, I'm sure you'll be able to find games on sale that are much more polished. Not to mention Doom, Rocket League, L.A. Noire, and Skyrim all coming soon. Just not worth it. At. All.

I really wanted to like this game. As a fan of all the old 3D Dreamcast and Gamecube/Xbox/PS2 Sonic games, I was actually looking forward to this. After the disaster that was Sonic Boom, I thought Sonic Team would turn it around and cater to the fans once again. Sonic Mania was, of course great, but given the bright spots in the previous 3 "next gen" Sonic gamesI really wanted to like this game. As a fan of all the old 3D Dreamcast and Gamecube/Xbox/PS2 Sonic games, I was actually looking forward to this. After the disaster that was Sonic Boom, I thought Sonic Team would turn it around and cater to the fans once again. Sonic Mania was, of course great, but given the bright spots in the previous 3 "next gen" Sonic games (Unleashed/Colors/Generations), I thought this time they'd perfect the formula. All in all, it isn't a bad game, and was pretty fun to play, but is nevertheless a disappointment in terms of what it's doing for the Sonic series (although I did have high expectations). The story is fine (although I would've really appreciated any presence of Chaos Emeralds at all, which for me completes a true Sonic game), music is excellent as always, and even the script was a pleasant surprise (save for the classic corny speeches), but it all boils down to gameplay. Starting with Modern Sonic, he probably has the most fun levels IMO, where players will find similarities to the other next gen Sonic games. However, there are a few of examples of straight terrible level design. Most of these examples are oversights, like a bridge where dashing is encouraged, yet if you try, falling off immediately is unavoidable. Additionally, a few levels are also ridiculously short, under a minute and a half, which can really only be explained by laziness or mismanagement of priorities at Sonic Team (as there are plenty of "challenge levels" to go around). Classic Sonic comes second in level consistency. He has a few of the best levels in the game, but again, some are just poorly designed. Mostly though, I had no idea why they even included him in this game. It just felt unnecessary, and he didn't really contribute to the main plot (some excuse about a dimensional disturbance was the reason for his presence). He didn't detract from the game, but it feels like a lot of the effort spent putting him in could've been used better elsewhere (like extending the relatively short levels and campaign). Maybe (hopefully) they could've just saved him for Sonic Generations 2, but he really didn't have a place in what could've been a self-contained good old fashioned Sonic story. Lastly, the avatar stages. Overall they were trying to combine the high speed and homing attacks of Sonic and a smash em up platforming style of gameplay. Sometimes it worked well (especially in the Sonic + Avatar stages), sometimes it didn't. When it didn't, it was because there were too many oversights, unnecessary obstacles or puzzles, and random gameplay elements that stop us from going fast, even in Modern Sonic stages. I actually thought Unleashed did this the best in their Day stages, with gorgeous levels and smart design, that, even in the 2D sections, never felt like it slowed the player down. That'd be my key complaint about the design: at its worst, it forcibly slows you down.

Now for what they do right. Like I said, music is amazing. The plot does its job (I actually really liked the plotline of the first 6 or so levels). Sometimes it gets lost between upbeat and dark, but the war-esque tone is a good fit. The script was actually really good. There were the occasional corny puns and cringy speeches about friendship and whatnot, but I thought that the writing for characters like Eggman and Sonic was much improved, and Infinite makes for a very good antagonist. Like I said before, the level design isn't always all the way there, but when it goes right, it feels like the best levels in Colors, Unleashed and Generations do, some of the most entertaining video game platforming levels out there. The issue is consistency. Customizing the avatar was surprisingly fun, and is very in depth, with a ton of unlockable outfits and accessories. When I wasn't forced into a smash-em-up with awkward weapons, I thought the high speed, more Sonic-esque portions of the avatar levels were pretty fun. The final few levels were kind of a jumble, with a kind of run-on story, but they were actually relatively challenging, which was welcome after a few levels that felt like walkthroughs.

A common reaction to this game that I've seen is "fans of the series will enjoy it", and I think that's pretty accurate. If you think you will, I recommend buying it, it's only $40, which is $20 cheaper than most console or PC releases. It has 30 levels in the campaign, plus a few more challenge levels, PLUS a free DLC called "Episode Shadow", with some fun levels, so there's plenty to keep busy, even though a bunch of levels are too short. I don't regret buying it, but I just wish that they learned from their mistakes in designing this game. It doesn't feel improved from the errors of past Modern Sonic games at all. I hope Sonic Team can reinvent themselves more for Sonic's next title, as I think the Unleashed/Colors/Generations/Forces formula is getting worn out. All in all though, I had fun.

The artstyle is good sometimes and off sometimes, being interesting with park avenue, but weird with "Sand Hill" and mystic jungle. Oh yeah. Mystic Jungle. Perhaps one of the worst groups of stages in the game. Modern Sonic's version is filled with sections where you will fall off of bottomless pits, and the custom hero version has the best music in the game, but the worst gimmick in the game, again relating to bottomless pits. As for Classic Sonic, it was just fine. Classic Sonic was actually perhaps the best part of the game, especially compared to Generations. Classic Sonic stages were the ones with the most length. Length, that is a huge problem with the game. This game is 40 dollars. And it's very short. That combined with Level Design really brings the game down. The level design can be really really fun (one later modern sonic stage and a lot of classic sonic stages are great), but it can be boring or just straight up bad (around half of the custom hero gameplay/tag team). Overall, the game is fun. I would give it a 6.5-7.5 because it was fun, it just needs more polish. If someone for SEGA/Sonic Team ever reads this, you all should learn to stop rushing games. The more time you spend making a game, the better it is. Look at Breath of the Wild. Delayed for years. Came out to Critic praise. The game has some really bad forms of a lack of polish, such as some stages that seem unfinished. There is so much to love, but there is still a lot to hate. Ultimately, if you have an interest in Sonic games such as Generations or Colors, this game is good, but wait until it goes on sale for like 20-30 dollars. If you have never tried a Sonic game or just aren't interested, don't. Just don't buy this game. if you have to buy a Sonic game, buy Generations, Colors, or Unleashed in terms of Modern Sonic. All in all, this game has some great parts and some horrible parts, but not enough horrible parts to call the game trash. Expand

First, can I just say the soundtrack is amazing? I'll get that out of the way right now. Much like Super Mario Odyssey's trademark song, I'm going to have some of Sonic Force's tracks stuck in my head for quite some time.

The story was pretty freakin' good. Cliche "Power of friendship" aside, it was at least deeper then I was expecting, and more importantly, it's got YOU in it. I wouldn't consider myself as a part of the Sonic fanbase, but I had a blast, making my bird-man look as awesome as possible and watching everything play out. If THAT is one of your biggest desires from this game, you will enjoy it, I promise, no matter what the negatives I'll bring up are.

Let's talk about that Avatar customization. You got 7 species of anthropomorphic awesomeness to choose from, and feel free to make it look as edgy or hilarious as you want. Regrettably, you're going to start in the nude, but you will VERY quickly start unlocking a huge variety of options by completing missions, and it never stops being satisfying. Aside from sweet, sweet cosmetics, you have a fair variety of weapons to choose from. These weapons not only work differently in combat, but have a special movement option that can get you places nothing else would. It add's a decent amount of re-playability to the stages, as some Coins or shortcuts can only be reached with a specific weapon. Also, you can unlock several of one kind of weapon, each with different passive effects, such as quicker recovery time, or moving faster when collecting rings. The customization may keep you playing for quite some time.

    Now, for those dreaded negatives

First and foremost, I absolutely hate how the controls feel, no matter what type of stage it is. Perhaps it's how all the games have felt lately and I'm just not accustomed to it, but I've played through the entire story now, and I can't help but blame my wonky movement for all of my deaths. 2D platforming felt much more difficult then it should have been, considering the overall simplicity of the levels. Whether I was playing as OG Sonic, Modern Sonic, or my own Avatar, it just felt BAD. Jumping, acceleration, spin attacking, ALL OF IT!

It was seriously hampering my experience, which is a shame because the game itself is quite pleasant to run through when nothing's frustrating me. Nice environments, and while the levels seemed easy, I had my fun trying to find alternate routes, or otherwise, well, going fast. For some reason, just going fast down a straight line is still fun.

Finally, don't know if it was just me, but I felt like the framerate wasn't even at 30. Or maybe it was 30 and I've just gotten too used playing on my PC. At any rate, it wasn't a smooth 60 FPS experience, and while I think the the game looks great visually, I also don't think it should have been terribly taxing on the Switch, and I'm not sure why the FPS seemed so low.

I want to be very clear, I've ENJOYED Sonic Forces. The game dared to tease me with a "True Ending" like in Sonic Mania, and I'm absolutely going to try and reach that point. But it has a lot of flaws that I feel everyone should be aware of before buying it, especially if you don't have much experience with the "Modern Sonic formula", as it seems to be called. But if you're well aware of what you're getting into, or don't care and just want to see your character kick some butt with Sonic, you'll have a great time.

They have a whole resistance army yet the only ones fighting are Sonic (x2) and your player character. They could have integrated so many of the cast as playable characters; heck even Tails and Knuckles would have been nice before going to the extended cast. The story in places is bizarre- such as Omega's odd, completely random appearance near the end.
Regarding game play- mostly positive. However, the controls are sometimes unresponsive (not helpful in a boss fight), you can find yourself careening off the edge when a turn comes up at high speed, the game is remarkably easy and- for the grand scale they have tried to reach by staging a full on war- far, far too short.

It felt like a step back to Sonic Colors, with mainly 2d sections and purely linear, on rails, 3d sections. And that's really unfortunate, because the addition of custom characters was such a welcome new aspect of the game that the game even had the chance to surpass Sonic Generations.

Even though this game was a letdown, if you are a fan of Sonic you should probably check this one out.

Forces also heavily improves on Colors in dialogue and original concepts. While the writing itself is questionable, Forces manages to improve drastically over Colors in most dialogue, and the base concept of the game being a grand-scale, hopeless planetary war make it MUCH more interesting than the play-it-safe, uninspired story of Colors.

Overall, Forces is what fans of the older, more serious games have wanted for years, and while the execution isn't perfect, the game manages to one-up the game that messed up the franchise's story-telling capabilities a decade ago.

Im sorry I love sonic and have played all the way back to the Adventure games but this just hurts..the level design was horrid and I hate the idea of using classic sonic as a crutch. when you try to give fan service so much to the point where its ridiculous is exactly whats happened here. Add to the fact that you literally have little interaction just makes for a horrible experience.

I also enjoyed the story as it's dark and keeps you interested in the game, but at the same time doesn't take itself too seriously as it is a sonic game.

The Modern sonic stages were also really fun with the boost gameplay, and the boss stages were a delight to play. I don't particularly enjoy the fully 2D Classic level but they weren't bad.

Ill divide my review on various parts, to explain my opinion as pure as possible:

    STORY:

Its kinda good, not gonna lie. For the "GOOD" part, the idea of Eggman actually ruling the entire world for various months is pretty nice, and the fact he actually tortured Sonic for once its... pretty interesting i would say... also, including old and new bosses adds a nice touch (old, talking about Chaos and Metal Sonic, and new, talking about zavok).

for the "OK" part, the introduction of infinite is kinda weird, because you need to play Episode Shadow to understand how all begins, which is not a very nice decision from Sega, but i will let it pass...

And the implementation of the OC Avatar is very simple, just a survivor that wanted to join the resistance isnt very attractive.

for the "Not Good" part, Classic Sonic appeared just out of nowhere, not even sure how or why the idea of Classic Sonic appearing out of nowhere was a cool idea :(

also, in some of the trailers of the game, you see shadow as part of the bad guys, when in the game you cant even fight him (either Chaos) which is kinda disappointing, but oh well...

    PLAYABILITY/GAME ASPECTS:

Its ok... its not like they introduced something new to the playability (because we have the casual Modern Sonic running the same line all over again, Classic Sonic with the 2D enviroment), except the things that the OC Avatar can do, that can change depending of the animal you choose, which it add a bit more of replay value, but excluding that, its just like any other sonic game (this doesnt mean thats bad... just kinda repetitive)

About the game aspects, for the "GOOD" part, voice acting is good and the quality is nice in all versions of the game, pretty smooth and good looking.

in the "OK" part, the AI of the NPCs isnt as good as previous games, in the Modern Sonic stages they dont even try to hurt you, which is kinda understandable, since the main goal of those stages is just run in a straight line, but it makes it too easy IMO, they should at least try to hurt you, not just be there, wasting space. In the Classic Sonic stages, they look ok.

And in Modern Sonic stages, the checkpoints hitbox seems kinda weird, you can "kinda" go thru it, small detail, since again, the main goal is just run until you reach the end, but its hitbox should be complete.

The stages are fun and pretty colorful, packed with a bit of that nostalgia and feelings, depending of the situations

    DIFFICULTY:

its too easy, comparing it with other sonic games (not as easy as oddysey, but thats a different franchise), the NPCs dont really try to hurt you, they are pretty easy to avoid and destroy as well, most of the stages can be completed very quickly, and overall, you can complete the game in 2 hours, or even less, and im not talking about speedrunning the game... which IMO is not that good, but moving that to a side, some (not all) of the stages can take 2 or 3 tries to understand where you need to go and where you should fall.

    OVERALL:

its ok. As a Sonic fan myself, i think this game had too much hype (and i was hyped too), but im kinda dissapointed, since some things are not as the Trailers promised. But is not as bad some people told me it was going to be, either is as good some people told me too...

Its enjoyable at least, and it gives some fresh air with the OC thing (which im not a fan of, but apparently it was well received, so, i guess ill let that pass too) and i can say its better than Lost World and Boom.

Should you buy it? If you want, or if you are a big Sonic fan, but i wouldnt say this is a title you should really get...

If anything, Eggman would be the communist, since world domination is literally a goal of that ideology which killed more than 100 million innocent lives. Keep political propaganda out of games aimed at kids/youth.
Also if you're going to introduce a new character, or even a recurring character, there should be an explanation as to how/why that character is even in the game in the first place! If you're gonna just throw in some fan-favorite characters, or spam the "create clone" story crutch, or make yet another failure of a deep, dark story, the music, gameplay and/or level design should make up for it! At the end of the short gameplay, it feels like so many things in this game were just recycled and downgraded.

When I told some of my friends that I had picked up Sonic Forces on release day, they all asked how it was. The best way to describe Sonic Forces in a nutshell is an 'experience'. And, as with most real life 'experiences', it is not necessarily a good thing.

To start, the story is perhaps one of the most polarising points of this game. If you want to experience what is essentially a Sonic fanfic, the story does have the ability keep you hooked through the sheer absurdity of some of it's story beats, but at the same time it has a tendency to leave you feeling exasperated by some of the ridiculous dialogue choices, and the rollercoaster-like pacing. In itself the story isn't inherently 'bad', it just seems to struggle to decide what it wants to be, and falls into the tried and tested formula of 'Sonic saves the world'. If you're going to open with torture, you'd at least expect the game to retain this dark tone throughout, but it never really finds a good balance between gritty war story and edgy fanfic.

Of course, with a Sonic game, gameplay is a key factor, and unfortunately something seems to have gone wrong. The controls feel floaty which makes it very difficult to time jumps correctly, often ending up with jumps which land you far ahead of where you anticipated to land. It's frustrating, but it partially feels like a conscious decision by Sonic Team to make the game 'feel' more difficult than it actually is.
Similarly, the gameplay is marred by a range weird quirks/bugs, in particular in the Modern Sonic and Avatar stages. The most frustrating of which is that the characters have a tendency to veer towards the outside of the track, which more often than not leads to Sonic/your Avatar flying wildly off the stage. I also ran into some odd glitches, such as getting caught on geometry and ultimately clipping into the abyss. It is issues like this that mar the experience, as most of the deaths feels like they happen more because of the weird physics and gameplay quirks than user-error.
This is also reflected in the ridiculously short campaign, as I had finished the main story in under 4 hours, despite numerous retries as a result of falling to my death. There are, however, a lot of unlockables, but these seem to mainly equate to Avatar items and nothing substantial. It is a very short game and lacks any truly interesting content to encourage you to play beyond the closing credits.
This isn't to say it is all bad on the gameplay front, as I did find myself genuinely having fun at some parts of the game. Modern Sonic stages, even with their strange quirks, can be exhilarating when you're blasting across impressive scenery. Surprisingly, I also found the Avatar stages to be some of the most enjoyable, as Modern Sonic's sometimes uncontrollable speed is swapped in favour of some more clever platforming segments. Also, dressing up the avatar is quite novel and can be a fun experience, particularly since he/she carries over all his/her ridiculous accessories into the cutscenes.

From a technical standpoint, the game does have some issues on Switch. Docked, it runs in 720p at 30fps (generally solid), but playing on a large TV highlights some of the horrendous textures as a result of optimising the game for Switch, which ruin the otherwise pleasant visuals. Playing Handheld, however, is a much better experience visually, as the graphics look much crisper. I did run into some very large frame rate drops when playing handheld, but these seemed to mainly be in scenes with a lot of hazards such as fire.

Finally, the sound design is also a mixed bag. Sonic Forces sees the return of vocal tracks for stages, but these seem to be exclusively for the Avatar stages, and some of them seem a bit at odds with the general feeling of the game. This stands out in particular in the credits song, which is just a strange choice for a Sonic games, and one which seems to want you to think the story you just witnessed actually had some emotional weight to it. Otherwise, I am a fan of tracks like Fist Bump, the main theme song, but for some strange reason you only hear small clips of it when certain actions are performed, and in the ending credits. Otherwise, it is relegated to motif status in several of the stage backing tracks.
On the other hand, Modern Sonic stages opt for a more modern rock vibe, with Classic Sonic stages going for a more retro inspired feeling. I have no complaints about these, as they are generally fine and fit the mood well.

in summary, it does legitimately feel like Sonic Team had pure intentions with this game, and some of the new elements which were added, such as the Avatar customisation, are actually some of it's best assets. Unfortunately, the overall experience is flawed by some strange gameplay and story choices, lack of real difficulty, and the overall length of the game. Some of these issues could be fine-tuned with updates, but even then the experience would be passable at best.

The story was average at best containing very little that’s worth remembering. When the ending credits start you don’t feel as satisfied as you would want to and it feels like Sonic Team overestimated the emotional strength of their story. One particular thing that stood out was the music: It’s slightly different from what we usually get in modern Sonic games, but it works really well. The game could have used more creative level design and a few tweaks to the controls (especially with classic Sonic), but that didn’t really stop me from smiling as I boosted through the solid soundtrack! If you’re a fan of the modern Sonic games, you’ll enjoy Sonic Forces. If you’re into the Genesis stuff and solid gameplay, stick with Mania! If you’re just a fanboy... buy it! Play it! Enjoy it! I’m giving it an 8/10 simply because I PERSONALLY enjoyed the game. It was well worth the money that I threw at it and it was a fun experience overall (though I honestly do hope that Sonic Team learns and improves upon the mistakes in this game). Expand

    Version 1.01

I was nine years old, and already well loyal to Nintendo, when Sonic the Hedgehog burst onto the games scene in 1991 and forced me to join most of my mates in vassalship to SEGA. Britain had been in the first Major ministry for less than a year and the Soviet Union, then politically little more than inertia and wishful thinking, was a mere six months from delivering the death blow to a half-century long Cold War. Though I did not have the language or context to describe it at the time, I recall a attitude of youthful exuberance, playful irreverence and cautious optimism that a decidedly new day had dawned, and SEGA's new mascot felt utterly at home. I've been there with Sonic through most of the intervening decades: making the leap to CD, to the Dreamcast Adventures, even to the trying and inconsistent Modern days.

Twenty-six years removed from that first adventure, I, now a middle-aged and facing a world far more dystopian that the halcyon days of the nineties, decided to play and review the blue blur's newest adventure, and find that I much prefer the metaphysical horror of helplessness caused by real life to the metaphysical horror of uselessness found in Sonic Forces. It is, in the most concise and charitable phrasing I can muster, a testament to aspirations of mediocrity. Please note that I very specifically and intentionally write 'aspiration to' it, not the state itself, because I cannot reasonably even call the game mediocre. To my own mind, mediocrity would be stagnation, an inability to move beyond or improve upon whichever of the formulae, that have comprised the frantic experimentation of period inaugurated by the reboot of doom, is momentarily on display. This, alas, Sonic Team could not even muster. The level design, which to my opinion peaked in creativity with Colors and in consistency with Generations, has retreated in virtually every metric. Length, variety and dynamism are an unimagined dream in the doldrums of this disaster's roughly fifty stages. General control has managed to become even more wildly inconsistent, punctuating what is mostly sluggish and cumbersome translation of movement with the occasional burst of comical slipperiness, and the boost mechanic, having already overstayed its welcome on the whole, when coupled with the absurd brevity of the stages, is a recipe for game that appeals to speedrunners and few others. The art design is mostly clean though uninspired, but critically the technical presentation is notably poor on the Switch, and most other systems not natively outputting at 1080p, strongly suggesting that next to no optimisation was done despite it ostensibly being a mainline multi-platform release. By far the worst offender of this title, or the greatest victim depending on your degree of empathy, is Sonic's lore. Now having suffered three consecutive titles featuring time travel, cross-dimensionality or both, all pretence to a cohesive narrative has been obliterated. Worse still, the infantile writing of Ken Pontac and Warren Graff, already culpable for Sonic Lost World and all Sonic Boom games, delivers a story bereft of nuance or any emotion beyond shoneny angst, taking what ought to have been desperate and harrowing fight against tyrannical annihilation and giving it the emotional weight of schoolyard tussle over favourite Pokemon.

It's a strange thing to grow up with, and in some ways away from, a cherished part of childhood, and frequently it's only in later adulthood when we find the strength, or perhaps resignation, to be more cynical about our formative years and those things which hallmarked them. With Sonic Forces, I sincerely believe that the time has come for the games community to have a frank and honest communication about the place of Sonic and whether his relevance, at least in the 3D platforming space, has passed from the commercial to the historical. For more than a decade I, and many others in the fandom, have soothed the wound of SEGA's and Sonic Team's incompetence with the balm of 'the next game', but there is a limit to the latitude that can be given to a pastime that demands so much and consistently offers so little. In life, there is always that moment, as certainly harrowing as it often is bittersweet, where we confront that not only are our days truly numbered but that those behind us are, with a moral certainly, better than those before us. I cannot help but question whether that time has come for Big Blue.

I have a feeling too much time was spent designing the clothing for the Avatar that you get from completing missions rather than working on more levels on top of the core 30.

The game was clearly not rushed during production, but even if you take your time to explore, you will feel like you are rushing through. A weird and occasionally unfitting soundtrack, exceptionally linear and un-challenging gameplay, and the build up to fights with Chaos and Shadow that are done away in cutscenes. Sonic Forces does deliver on what it advertised, and if it seemed to advertise more, you should remember that that this is a 3D sonic game made by the team that put out Lost World. The choices for making your own character are also off-putting, and the clothing options are exceptionally gaudy - see the "gamer" snapback. Classic Sonic handles so slowly as well; he's stiff to control and shows that the team learned nothing from what was implemented in Mania, which fantastically did classic's momentum and control.
Sonic Forces is, truly, dangling plastic keys in front of kids and fanboys alike, and despite their admittedly hilarious PR team, Sonic Team has left you with a boring experience. If you have the opportunity, opt for Mania instead - its team is much more passionate and wise with how sonic should play.

I have seen a lot of people call this "Straight Line Simulator" and they are pretty much correct in doing so. Compared to the excellent branching paths in Colours or the reactions-based rollercoasters in Generations, there isn't anything resembling competent level design in this game. If you don't run the way the designers want you too - full Boost ahead - you don't play the game.

Although there really isn't much to play at that. Clocking in at less than 4 hours on average, Forces relies on replaying stages for its lifespan. Many Sonic games are short, so this isn't too bad a complaint on its own. However the inclusion of too many gameplay styles means the game never truly gets to focus on its strengths in the short time it has to do so.

Perhaps most damaging of all though? The controls and physics. I am not exaggerating when I say early PlayStation platformers like Croc have better controls than Forces. Sonic, Classic and the Avatar shift across the levels so slowly they might as well be running through superglue. And when you suddenly speed up spontaneously, or plummet from unexpected surges in gravity, you know you're dealing with a poorly coded piece of software.

Sonic Team have created a cinematic, fast paced game for themselves and nobody else. Everyone will likely compare this game's failure to the success of Mania. Myself? I just find it a shame that the magic behind Colours and Generations may never return. An abysmal platformer, and a low standard Sonic title. Avoid.

Sonic forces is a good game and I really like the story. The music is also amazing. I wish there where more environments to explore and the modern sonic levels/controls need improvement. I like the custom character levels and the red rings give the game a lot of replay ability.

It was about time we got a good modern sonic game, the return to serious storylines, the superb music and multiple playable characters make this one of the best games of the franchise.

The soundtrack is good, with many cool pieces. Maybe one of the best among all 3D Sonic Games.
The levels are short and a bit uninspired. The only level where I thought the visuals were cool was the last one.
The physics in 2D sections is terrible. I can`t count the number of times I died because of the moon jumps, super gravity and input lag this game has. The main story is way too

The main story is way too short. You can finish it in about 4 hours. Even faster if you don`t replay any stage to try higher scores.
I played it on the Switch. Most of the game has no stuttering or fps drop, but in some specific stages and moments you can get horrible fps drops.
Gameplay with classic Sonic feels very unnecessary. Feels like it was included just so the Generations fans would shut up.
The plot is strange as hell, specially if you compare to Sonic Lost Worlds for example. It is a bit too violent and the subject is a bit too adult - revolves around war and death in some moments. In some moments the plot feels like it was fan made.
To play with the avatar is cool, but I hate how the game fails to tell you in advance which Wisp weapon is best with each stage.
One can notice the lack of polish in the game in several points. Clearly they had a small budget or little time to develop it. That`s sad.
Over all I can`t say the game is terrible, but it falls in same pitfalls of other Sonic games in the past. I would say it is not nearly as enjoyable as Sonic Generations or Colors or Lost Worlds.

The gameplay is something imprecise but it is fun. Graphically it's better than previous deliveries. Also the soundtrack is good (although some tracks are not to my taste).

    GAMEPLAY
The gameplay for all three feels very different from another but does it mean it's good?
I found the Modern Sonic game play to be pretty much the same from generations but the lvls are short so you probably wont get the full experience here.
The Level design for these stages are overall okay; some stood out especially the ones where you use the rail to grind your way to the end :)

Classic in the meanwhile is not good; I have to compare to this mania cause the controls and overall feel for Classic Sonic is off. The Level design for these stages are overall just awful to mediocre; All of them feels really bland and getting through these lvls are like a cakewalk

Custom Character is alright. The different kind of wispons you get to use are pretty distinctive from each other and all of them feels pretty fun to use. The problem though with this is it kinda drags down the overall feel for a sonic game... The stages are okay as well and I feel like the replayability
is definitely there if you want to test out different wispons

I feel like the length needs to be way more for every stage and it desperately needs more variety in terms of stages and enemy design
All of the stages feels lacking and there is not enough originality or an improvement here compared to past titles
You will be seeing only a total of like 3-4 areas in the 30 lvls of this game, some are existing areas but with different sceneries

Replayability is kinda lacking in terms of rewards

The Customization is awesome for the avatar; I really like that!
    PERFORMANCE/GRAPHICS:
At 720/30 fps it plays okay.. I tried the PS4 demo for Sonic Forces and it felt way more better visually and performance while due to 60fps

I recommend playing handheld and even better on other consoles since I played through the whole game in docked and the game felt really off for me
The docked ver really hurt my experience here cause all the character's movement and the speedy parts feels off and hard to control
The visuals here are really bland and awful compared to the handheld mode
If I was only reviewing the docked mode it was like a 4-5/ 10 experience for me
Handheld felt way more better visually and performance wise but it definitely is lacking in frames, so it wont feel smooth enough

    STORY/BOSSES
The Story in Sonic Forces is an interesting take but overall it felt short and rushed especially towards the end
There was a lot of potential here for characters like Infinite but the story abruptly came to an end for him and that same goes for Eggman himself

The bosses in this game are mediocre and all of them felt almost the same xD
If you were hoping for some iconic boss fights that they've shown in the trailers, you will feel VERY disappointed
If you're looking for a full blown boss fight, you won't get that here. Some of the bosses felt like
the mobile Sonic Rush game where you just dodge whatever they throw at you and counterattack

The final boss lacked originality and it felt like all the bosses from this game thrown into one. This isn't really a spoiler but if you were looking forward to a Super Sonic finish, you wont get one here sadly (It is in the game though!)

Overall story had a lot of potential and some parts I actually kinda enjoyed
The bosses in the otherhand is mediocre and a lot of their moveset has been re used a lot of times

    MUSIC/VOICE

I played through the game in English and again it was alright. It's mainly due to the script and story that it felt really odd at times and again had a lot of potential
I'm still not used to these voices for every character since a lot of them has changed throughout time but overall it was okay
Music is once again the strongest part of Sonic Forces; without this I think I would not enjoy it as much!
It's really good and the main theme is awesome except you don't to really get to hear the full song till like the credits!

LAST THOUGHTS Sonic Forces felt like a game that's in experimental stage; it does not know where it wants to go and really lacked the time and budget to make into a full blown adventure.. SEGA is even putting out a survey for players feedback, so those who have played the game, I recommend you guys do it especially if you're a sonic fan I really hope they continue the 3D sonic games cause I feel like they just need to find a entirely new direction without re using things from like generations and also not too distinct like Sonic Lost Worlds, Sonic Boom xD I hope SEGA and Sonic Team takes Sonic Forces as a stepping stone and really push out a full blown adventure that will blow us away next time!

So when I heard that Sonic Forces was going to be a game like sonic unleashed, a dark story, a new engine, a boost to win title on next-gen consoles, and a fresh coat a paint for the series, I couldn't wait for it! Unfortunately, this game didn't live up to the previous games released along with sonic mania. Heres my review!

Plot: No spoilers for obvious reasons, but to sum things up. Sonic is defeated and apparently "tortured" for 6 months, in that time frame, Eggman takes over 99% of the world, which causes sonic's friends along with your custom character (called Avatar or Rookie) to create a resistance (star wars much?) to stop Eggman and defeat his new creation, Infinite. They later meet back up with tails and classic sonic, coming back from Sonic Mania to complete its story or something? Though this story is interesting, its execution is horrible, and the later parts of the story suck due to the villains being dumb as rocks and a force message about teamwork or something. Not a good way to do a "dark" story, oh and sonic wasn't tortured if he is still happy and go lucky. 3/10

Gameplay: It's split up into three sections, Modern Sonic, Avatar, and Classic Sonic. Modern Sonic is the same boost to win formula as the previous games since sonic unleashed. It's well done, and nice to see again, but I wish it were more of a different take on speedy 3d platforming. The avatar gameplay is decent, you get to make your character and uses his wisp power to get through the level somewhat like the Modern Sonic stages. They're alright, not much, but nice to play. Then we get Classic Sonic... Sigh. Boy, was Classic Sonic wasted. Its just CS from Generations again, and the stages are kinda dull, and it controls awful. They should have removed him and had more stages with the Avatar and Modern Sonic. Speaking of Modern Sonic and Avatar, they have some stages where you play as both trying to get to the end of the level, using double boost at least once during the stage, they're better, but nothing special again. It seems like Sonic Team played it safe with this game, and it backfired severely in they're faces. They should have done a new gameplay style like Sonic Lost World or Mario Oddsey, the boost to win formula should have been retired before this game because it's not 100% fun anymore like Generations or Unleashed. It was still fun, but not as fun as I would have liked. 5/10

Audio: The soundtrack is one of the best in the Sonic series, it's more cinematic, but its also filled with more sonic like music like fist bump and infinite's themes. More songs would be nice though, but still high quality. 9/10

Bosses: Disappointing as well, the mini-bosses are way too easy, and the FInal Boss is also a joke. Take one look at the final boss (if you completed the game) and tell me it's not like the one from Colors and Lost World! 3/10

Summary: Sonic Forces is a huge disappointment for me. The boost to win gameplay is fun, and so is the avatar and double gameplay. The soundtrack is fantastic and is one of the best sonic soundtracks along with sonic mania. However, the story, while it has a good idea, it's not well executed and a huge disappointment, it's not even that dark! Not to mention the Classic Sonic gameplay is pointless and can be removed from the game, and nothing would change. I wish this could have been the game to bring 3d sonic to the next gen, but instead, it has me wishing for more, and for someone else to give this series some justice just like Sonic Mania did. Sega, if you're listening to this, please let someone else make a sonic game, enough of the hedgehog engine, enough of Denuvo DRM and crashes, please have it open world or whatever with no DRM, and something that's not 2d again and helps gives the franchise some new life. Also, P.S. DON'T RUSH IT!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Forces is a pretty cool game. I'll be comparing it to Unleashed and Colors, mainly because I love that game and it does a few things similar to Sonic Forces-

2 gameplay styles, 1 of which is boost-style Sonic
having multiple different levels in the same location
    customizable characters, to an extent

Sonic Forces has some pretty cool level themes. Most people complained that there wasn't enough variety and that Sonic Team reused too many places, but there's really only Green Hill and Chemical Plant. The Death Egg and Metropolis look totally different from their Sonic 2 variants. Most are pretty fun, but they're not nearly as fun to speedrun as Sonic Unleashed. Forces just doesn't have that flow. But playing through them just a few times is pretty fun. Most have a pretty good soundtrack, too. I also think the world map in this game is different from the one in Unleashed, but I don't know for sure. If the levels were longer, I would have likely given this game an 8 or even a 9.

The final boss is awesome. I liked it much more than the final boss in Sonic Colors and I liked it much more than the final boss of Sonic 2. It consists of 3 acts. Act 1 is with Classic Sonic, and it's kind of similar to the one with the rocks and the Egg Dragoon from earlier, but it's much more tense because the floor is constantly shifting and moving. It's pretty cool. The second act is with the custom character. It's really great. There's actually 2 ways to beat the Death Egg Robot as the custom character. Oh, did I mention that the Death Egg Robot got redesigned and it looks infinitely better than it did in the past? Anyway, you could grapple onto its hand after it slams on the platform, or you could grapple onto the robot's eye and do much more damage. The third act is with good old Sonic. The 3rd act is the worst part because it's similar to the Colors final boss; and as I said, I don't like that boss. Act 3 is mostly jumping over lasers and boosting until you're close enough to homing attack the robot. This 3rd act is still more fun than the Colors final boss, but it's not great by any means.

The cutscenes are awesome. They shine more light on a ton of characters. We get to learn more about Knuckles, Amy, Rouge, Tails, Silver, Vector, and others. Some of these characters haven't appeared in over 10 years, so a good amount had to be recast. Nearly all of them are pretty good. Silver and Rouge's new voices are awesome. Omega's new voice sounds too dark and edgy. I liked it much better in Sonic Heroes. The cutscenes are animated well and show a good amount of expression.

And covering all of this, we have the graphics and sound. The sound is pretty good. I don't know how they'd improve upon it from the other boost games, but whatever. The graphics, however, with the exception of cutscenes, aren't as good as they are in Unleashed. Unleashed is a gorgeous game with great lighting, shading, models, and textures, all running at 1080p on my Xbox 360. So why, if there's less detail in Forces, does it run at 720p? I wouldn't mind 720p if it had the same lighting and textures as Unleashed, but it doesn't. The Switch is more powerful than the Xbox 360, so what's their excuse?

So level design takes priority, then final boss, cutscenes, and then graphics and sound, so long as each of those fields is at least passable.

In my book, a 7 is a good score. But on Metacritic, it's a mediocre score. Screw Metacritic's scoring system. This game is good. I'm giving this game a 7 mainly because of level design. As I said before, the levels are good, but not great. That's my lasting impression on this game. I would, however, buy a Sonic Forces soundtrack CD.

    Pros :
    Good Story
    Good soundtrack (Sonic stages)
    Beautiful graphics
    Nice level designs

    Cons :
Controls feel so strict with movement
Trying to turn is like trying to turn while boosting
So much button delay (not because of lag)
    A broken game when released
Avatar stages DO NOT fit for 2d sections the controls feel so strict while trying to move in air
Recycled stages and stages that could have been left in mania
Classic sonic has no use to be in the game
Avatar soundtracks are nothing but Dupstep , Nightcore music (not that bad but the vocals need to go)
theres NO DRIFTING IN THIS GAME which makes the gameplay feel even more stiff even for curves
Homing attack system has been nerfed and delays A LOT
This game was made for the whiny oc fans
Cutscenes are bugged and you can only watch them at 20fps
No idle animation (which fans somehow complain about this)
Going through the red hoops or any hoops makes sonic/avatar keep spinning while in air
Boost is still uncontrollable especially for curving
    Boring boss fights
    Hard difficulty feels too easy
The physics with modern 2D stages are broken and really bad platforming
    Stages are way too short

Overall still a fun game but just needs a big patch to get rid of these bugs and improve the gameplay.

Coming off of Sonic Mania classic Sonic in this game feels like a 1 ton brick with a drop dash. He wasn't needed and this game would have been better without him he should have just stayed in Mania. The second problem is the boss fights they might be a bit fun but they are so unoriginal. Like you fight Infinite and Metal Sonic the same freaking way and the final boss is just the Nega Wisp from Sonic Colors again! The modern sonic and custom character gameplay styles are nearly identical, however the custom character uses a type of weapon known as a 'wispon' to beat enemies rather than the boost ability. These 2 play styles consist of moving forward and pressing 2 buttons every now and then. Modern sonic stages are all pretty much just boost to win, and the custom character levels mostly require you to spam the wispon and move forward. The classic sonic stages however are by far the worst, which is why i am happy that there are few of them. The controls feel very clunky, slow, and aren't even momentum based. Another problem with sonic forces is the story. Now i personally think that the concept was great, however, the way they included the story into the game was really bad. Lots of characters and plot points will just sort of come out of nowhere and then disappear the next second. It also seems as if SEGA forgot certain events from past games in the sonic timeline since tons of things that happen in this game completely contradict certain events from sonic's past games. Now not only are both the story and the gameplay heavily flawed, but the game is way to short. While the price has declined from about $40 to $20, they still should have offered a longer experience. While the game has tons of issues, we can't overlook the fact that the soundtrack is great. The songs that play simply make you want to go fast like every sonic soundtrack to this day. Overall, Sonic forces really isn't a good sonic game, or a game in general. I do not recommend this to anyone unless you are a die hard sonic fan making a collection or just someone who wants to try it out Expand

Sonic Forces is the answer to the backwards question; What if we spent more time building an engine rather than the game? What we get is an incredibly lazy and blatant cash grab. Sega seemingly never will learn there lesson long enough. The need to give developers time to create a great game is of key importance yet Sega continuously forgets this. Sonic Unleashed and Generations are what happens when Sega does give their developers full reign on a project.

The music in Forces is insanely mediocre. In a failed attempt to capture the magic of Crush40. Force's music is a pale imitation and the main theme Fist Bump wasn't even constructed with any lyrics in mind.

Most importantly the level design is the most simplistic and automated in any Sonic game. The level designers hired to make the levels in the game had only ever worked on Sonic Lost World and have no experience working on this game-play style, which is very apparent. All the worth while Sonic Team employees have jumped ship to Nintendo where their talents can be appreciated by a competent Developer. Sonic Forces is an utter failure in every sense of the word.

The problems don't start off straight from the bat - you have a solid first level and the first few stages after that are "good". They're not "great", they're "good". I'll be separating the problems I, personally had, based

The problems don't start off straight from the bat - you have a solid first level and the first few stages after that are "good". They're not "great", they're "good". I'll be separating the problems I, personally had, based on each character.

Story: The story is as good as nearly any Modern Sonic game will get. Sonic has been taken hostage by Eggman, breaks free, saves the world. Standard stuff. For some reason though Sonic Team figured a Metal Gear Solid deep-like plot was needed. It is not.

Modern Sonic Stages are just like the stages from Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations, except they legitimately do not work. I found myself flying off the stage due to boosting, I've found myself getting bored by just normally running to prevent the problem I just mentioned. 2D Platforming occurs way more often than it's welcome to, usually with broken physics. You'll clip platforms or just straight up "land" but fall right through them. It's not a glitch - it's just wonky physics.

Classic Sonic: I, for one, am actually happy to see Classic Sonic again, but I feel he was only put in it due to fanservice. He contributes little to nothing to the story, and it hurts considering his stages are pretty damn solid for most of it - they play just like they did in Generations, wherever or not you liked Generation's Classic Stages, that's up to you.

Avatar Stages: Surprisingly, the Avatar stages work VERY well minus a few problems with power ups. You won't be told a recommended power up / weapon to bring and a lot of the time they're finished / you've completed the stage as soon as you started. (They're pretty short) - the avatar customization is pretty nice too, it has some great call backs to previous Sonic games, and an unlockable was Sonic's SOAP shoes from SA2 - which I loved seeing straight away. The Avatar is mute, so there's not much to say about them.

NONE of the stages, by any of the three characters, are notable for anything specific. You won't look back in 5 years time and say "I loved Forces - my favourite stage was (name)" - It just won't happen. Every stage, or a majority, is named after old Sonic levels (Green Hill, Metropolis, Chemical Plant etc) but none of them will stick in your mind at all.

Now that the stages themselves are out of the way, It's time to talk about Sonic's friends:

They're annoying. and not because "there's too many!" or "they're stupid looking!"

    they are just.
    annoying.

They don't stop talking - but due to the music blasting and the sound of boosting (though, remember, don't boost or else you'll go FLYING off the stage!), you'll only catch clips of what they'll say. But you better PRAY to god you don't hit a checkpoint and die whilst hearing a character speaking. They'll nonstop be barking and repeating their lines EVERY. TIME. YOU. RESPAWN.

    Gameplay: D
    Music: B+
    Story: C-
    Total Score: C

Final verdict: If you're a hardcore Sonic fan, I can't tell you if you'll like this game or not. I'm a giant Sonic fan and I'm into a majority of Sonic games, but I cannot enjoy this one. If you're looking for a pseudo-Sonic Generations 2, you've got it. If you want highspeed platforming with levels you want to redo and will remember in the future, avoid this game.

When it comes down to it, Forces's absolute undeniable strong point is the plot. Rather than following something cliche of the normal Modern Sonic game line ups where it is an attempt to stop Eggman from conquering the world, the fact that Forces turns that upside down with just the exposition is quite satisfying. Seeing how we finally get Eggman conquering the world in the beginning, it just completely does a topsy-turvy on that trope with this scenario. With how Sonic is presumed dead (in all actuality he isn't), the impact, point, and tone are all established firmly which keeps this consistent dark tone throughout the game. Honestly, the narrative is a great selling point with how really dark it is, yet the game does a good job on delivering really what it should be like if our mad scientist friend finally conquered the world.

When it comes to gameplay and stages, I'm going to have to say that is was just decent from my experience with the game. The three main play styles as you all know are the Avatar's, Classic Sonic's, and Modern Sonic's. When it comes down to it, the stages themselves do suit the environment and tone the game depicts with them having a gloomy atmosphere and dark undertone to them. Honestly, the game wasn't truly immersive with the stages as it just felt more like a task that I was forced to do rather than me getting enjoyment from doing it. Sometimes you have some rather good stages, but those are heavily overshadowed with the others that are of inferior quality making them mediocre normally or bad at worst. While I'm not the hugest fan of the conflicting playing styles, Classic Sonic does play decently in a good homage to how he somewhat was in Sonic Generations. Modern Sonic does a somewhat good job with the boost formula though it has other problems that are somewhat underlying. The Avatar is somewhat similar in play style to Modern Sonic, but it branches off with more focus on using weapons for attacking and solving puzzles which in itself were decent as well.

When it comes to cinematic showings for cutscenes and other things of that nature, I will saw that the game does a somewhat good job at this. Sometimes the cutscenes can feel awkward with how the jump from a more darker and shadowy appearance is given which makes Forces seem rather fickle in this area. The cutscenes sometimes also make some characters just feel so poorly animated that is just honestly makes me question the budget that was put into this product.

When it comes to other aspects such as soundtrack, control, etc. are okay. An added problem I do have is that the characters do feel slow which rather makes this game feel somewhat uncomfortable when playing them at times. Forces isn't necessarily a "bad" game, but I think it definitely didn't live up to the hype every had for it. Most of the things in Forces are just mediocre or okay really with a few added good things here and there. I would give this a 7/10 for the fact that it doesn't deserve exactly a lower or a high score when compiling these criticisms.

When this game was first announced i was excited, the Avatar with the multiple weapons looked great. and you know what, those weapons were pretty great...and that was it. This game is a terrible flop, from not knowing what it wants its own tone to be, to writing that makes 80's Saturday morning cartoons look like genius works of art. The levels are pretty bland, the 3D sonic ones being the worst i've seen ever. The bosses are uninspired, with half of them being auto scrollers where you keep running till you hit the enemy. here is a direct summary of how i beat a boss, "run in circles to dodge and attack, one well timed jump to dodge attack, one jump to dodge a shockwave, then mash homing attack" repeat that 4-5 times and boom, that's a boss fight. Now, you may think "well, its a sonic game so its saving grace must be the music right"? well i wish that were the case. The music is a mixture of overly high pitched auto tune sounding vocal tracks, and dubstep, the latter of which has a very short loop in most tracks. The only reason i won't put this game any lower than a 5 is simple, it CAN be enjoyed to some extent with how bad it gets, but thats minimal at best. Expand

It´s not a bad game, but not an outstanding one, but for the sake of metacrict and false reviews I´ll give it a 10(personal score = 7.5). The gameplay is very fast like other sonic games. But I really wished for longer stages :c

Modern & Classic Sonic all play very similarity to how they played in generations, and the Custom Hero plays very well as well. For Modern Sonic, his stages are mostly 3D with some 2D platforming parts. (Like Colors.) And Classic Sonic handles very well like in Generations And Mania. The physics has been ever-so-slightly been improved over Generations, but again, could benefit from some improvements. The controls for the Custom Hero can feel a bit unresponsive at times but does not ruin the core gameplay. And even though I feel like this game could've been better overall, I still do recommend this game to all Platforming fans and Sonic fans. The Switch version does run at a noticeably lower framerate and resolution, however. The game is still a blast though. Definitely an 8/10 from me. Expand

I have fully beaten the main game and the Shadow DLC. After beating the main game it occurred to me that Sonic Forces tries to implement all the ideas that people liked about the last few 3D and even 2D Sonic games but forgets to find its own identity. All ideas in Forces may be good on their own but together they form an unfocused and confusing mishmash of existing ideas. Boss ideas get recycled and you could swear that you've seen some set pieces before. Sonic Forces runs in the Hedgehog Engine 2 which is the followup of the engine used in Sonic Unleashed and the game looks pretty good because of that but something seems to be wrong with the physics... The momentum is super awkward and top speeds are very inconsistent throughout the game. Modern Sonic handles the best but even he is very flawed. Forward and left-right movement feels good but the moment you want to run diagonal the controls just stop to work. The Avatar has some serious acceleration issues and Classic Sonic is just so far removed from what he felt like in Mania and Generations that I couldn't adjust myself to these controls until the very end. Modern Sonics level design is very narrow and focused on the boost. There is only minimal platforming in these 3D sections which really bummed me out since Colors had some good 3D platforming parts. The story... well... it really doesn't even need to be there. "99% of the world has been taken over by Eggman" It makes no difference. Seriously! Characters are not explained. Why is Silver there? Why? I don't know. There's no reason for anything in this game. I only really enjoyed like 20% of the levels which in a game that took me 5h to beat is not much. The other 80% are either ok-meh or just plain not fun.
The 3 Shadow level were really good though it kind of feels like a different game for the time that it lasts... which is like 20 minutes max.
Overall Sonic forces is NOT BAD but it's nothing more than that.

only problem is sonic can’t do it alone, he needs your help after he’s snatched up…
A rookie is called in to aid to sonic..
    And that rookie is you...
You create your own character out of pretty limited choices and you set out to reclaim territories and help team sonic on different missions…
There are sos missions where you play as other created characters for rewards, there are bonus missions, and again 30 regular missions…
Sonic forces is a really enjoyable and fun game…
unfortunately this is an extremely casual sonic game as well, geared more towards children than sonic vets…
It has the typical things from the sonic formula... rings counting as your health... running really fast and dashing through enemies…
    but failing is practically impossible…
My issue with sonic mania was that I felt it wasn’t casual enough as levels were way too long to go off of a life system… and sonic forces goes the complete opposite of having extremely short levels with infinite lives.. if you lose your rings its back to the checkpoint…
This is really just a score chasing game…
the level design is great, the worlds is beautiful, there’s decent music… but the best feeling levels are over before they even feel like they begin.. making it hard for any stage here to be memorable…
but this 2 and a half hour long campaign does mix things up as it switches through your character, regular sonic, and classic sonic… all 3 handling differently…
With classic sonic stages giving you a little more challenge, but still not much..
With your character you’re able to use different weapons you unlock as you play to shoot enemies all with their own perks in level like invincibility, or turning enemies into ice cubes giving you coins...
All of this to try and obtain a levels s rank which will get you more clothing items to customize your character, as will completing the games different challenges… giving the player reason to go back and play these levels…
But being so easy… hardly any timing here, which is that makes 3d sonic games so addicting.. And it’s completely missing...
This game is really just shoot enemies while sonic runs forward... ocassionally take down a boss and repeat..
    I never felt engaged…
And while it doesn’t feel like a real sonic game, and there’s hardly challenge or addictive qualities...
I enjoyed my time with this game... Its fun…
This is a very decent baby’s first sonic game…

Sonic Forces may have created some hype but unfortunately, it mostly falls flat on its face as it quickly becomes obvious that this game is an exercise in disappointment. While the action runs smoothly whether on a television screen or on handheld mode, the game's short and unimaginative levels, the absence of gameplay mechanics that had become a staple of 3D Sonic games, the unreliable controls and the mediocre soundtrack all add up to a very flawed game from which a lot more was expected.
