personally, I think this is the best 3d sonic game since sonic generations the modern sonic and classic sonic levels are brilliant but the game focuses too much on the avatar but I would recommend it anyway definitely worth the £28

Great !! The Game feel like an Evolution From Sonic Colors and Generations. Great Music, Story, Gameplay and more. And i also like the section between 2D and 3D. i think people only said that Forces is bad because they are jealous how good Sonic Games is. Honestly, much more better then Mario

This game is so fun, I love it. The gameplay is really fun especially modern sonic, i love how he goes so fast, the avatar stages are really fun as well i like how they give u so much customization and the wispons are really fun, i love how in the stages they give u different options on how to complete the stage depending on what wispon u use, even though its short it was still really fun.

Claro, tiene varias fallas como todos, sin embargo, no arruina la experiencia, la BGM es excelente y te llena de emoción.

The storey is also pretty good so far and the music is good too. I can understand the critism for the first few stages but once you get past those it gets much better and much more interesting with more legnth and variety.
There are still some issues with sonic stiffness during boosting and the custom characters turning and the stages could be a lot longer and i feel like there was alot more potential for the game that the developers could of tapped into with modern sonics level design and the wispons for the custom character. Overall is about the same as colours or generations with a better story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who has been a HUGE Sonic fan ever since I was a kid I have to say that I honestly do not understand the hate this game receives. Some are hailing it as some huge mistake, but I think those that do fail to realize what this series and this character is. I feel I must preface this review by tempering it with the perspective that Sonic has been and always will be aimed at a younger audience, so keep that in mind as I head along and try to keep that child-like whimsy close at hand while we review this together.

Sonic and all that comes with him encapsulates one thing that has never left him. Extreme self-confidence and a level of 'cool' that only comes with not caring whether you're in trend or just living by your own beat. That is exactly what this game delivers in all of it's campy, cheesy glory. To use one of the ever-referenced favorites of the blue blur himself, it's like a chili dog. You get a mystery mix of meats (characters and game play styles) on a bun (the game itself) smothered in mystery meats and spices (anything 'new' added to spice things up) and then covered in a cheese-like substance (the campy and deliciously cheesy dialogue, story, and characters.)

I think the real problem is that those fans that would pan the game don't want anything new. To compare, Mania was fantastic and a wonderful love letter to the games of yore -- the Sonic 4 we never got, even -- but it's all just remixes of an era far gone by. It's a nostalgia trip down memory lane. While it's a solid game with fluid animation you'd never really see in the actual 16-bit era, it's still a 16-bit game in an age where some engines have you seeing the pores on a model's skin. I constantly see this game compared to Mania and this is why I comment on it here.

To fully compare, Sonic Forces is just that as well. It's a love-letter to the age gone by with revisited worlds and gameplay similar to Generations... but the similarities stop at the "Modern Sonic" and "Classic Sonic" stages. There is an odd lack of Chaos Emeralds and Super Sonic, but that makes way for stages which bring us into the biggest selling point that this game had. The ability to create your very own Mobian called the "Avatar" and have them join the fight.

For being such a big selling point, the character creator does fall a little short. Hats hover above the character's head, glasses float in front of their eyes, and you have to unlock EVERY scrap of clothing. You start with nothing but gloves and a pair of Speed Shoes ala Sonic himself. It would have been nice to have at least SOME costume customization out of the gate, but apparently Dobby must earn his clothing. The specie list also leaves much to be desired. I would have thought they would have at least had Fox and Echidna right next to Hedgehog, though Echidna is somewhat forgivable as the appearance of Shadow and Chaos confirm that the Adventure games were canon to this one, meaning that Knuckles is the last of his kind. I'd think foxes of a one-tailed variety would have made it in, however, as it was noted that Sonic befriended Tails because he was always made fun of for having two tails. With specie selection aside, there really is no excuse for the modeling faux pas of the floating accessories. Whether it's a game for kids or not, the models could have easily had things shifted around so that they actually fit instead of floating about the character and just looking terrible.

With that gripe aside, they did a good job of making the Avatar feel "cool" and really selling the "my character is Sonic's friend! Yay!" aspect in that classic, campy style that sits somewhere between SatAM and AoStH. Speaking of the two, the entire story dredges up feelings of both of the old cartoons of both fame and infamy. It takes a much darker turn, speaking of armies and torture while also having the over-the-top villainy that just makes it all laughable in the end. "Infinite" is perhaps the edgiest thing to come out of Sonic since Shadow and I couldn't help but snicker any time he was on screen.

Lastly is the music. There are more tracks with lyrics in this game than any Sonic before it, but the music felt pretty spot-on the entire time. It's certainly not timeless, but it's good enough to bump my score up a little.

All in all, the game was fun. It didn't blow me out of the water, but it wasn't bad. Controls were solid, I encountered no glitches, and it was a pretty clean run from start to finish. While the story isn't anything to write home about, it's that same enjoyable camp and over-the-top scripting that Sonic has had ever since his cartoon days.

All in all, it's a good game. Certainly not ground-breaking and playing a bit safe. Certainly not "great" by any stretch, but not "bad" either. It's a solid game that fans and newcomers alike can have fun with so long as they take it for what it is.

Silly, speedy, campy Sonic fun that's "too cool" to take itself too seriously.

    Modern Sonic and OC:
The controls for Modern Sonic and the Avatar are really solid. The Sonitar stages are messy at times, but they're only a real problem on one stage in particular, other than that, they're fine.

    Classic Sonic:
My main problem was Classic Sonic. He had NO INVINCIBILITY FRAMES. You kinda need invincibility frames when you're platforming. It made for a bad time and honestly, I was dreading Classic Sonic stages when I saw them appear. The controls in general were very bad when the Switch was docked. There was delay, and he was slippery, and it made the timed jumps ridiculously hard. It was MUCH better to play on the gamepad, as the controls were much more responsive, but it doesn't excuse the terrible docked controls. The only redeeming factor he had, was his connection to Tails. I thought that was really nice, but I don't want to spoil anything.

    Missions:
My other gripe was the missions. They're nearly impossible, you have one try, and then it's gone forever. I can't remember what the color coding means, and because fo that I have no idea what to do in the stage. Doesn't matter, you'll die before you get there and then bam it's gone.

    Bois Online:
People were expecting The Second Coming of Christ and I think that's why some were disappointed. It's NOT forgettable. It's not short either like some said. Yes, the campaign is, but there's tons to do post-game. Why are they **** on it for being short when they're not experiencing all the games has to offer.

    Closing:
The game's not perfect, but considering Classic Sonic was my only big problem, and he had like 6-7 stages the game's not tainted. I really enjoyed the story, and this game for sure stands with Generations and Colors as good Modern Sonic games.

A very disappointing game. It's not the worst game SEGA's made, but for the time spent on the game, there should've been more polish, because the game felt rushed. 30 levels, each 2 minutes long. The game can be beaten in 3 hours on a first playthrough, and that's only due to the insane difficulty spikes and Classic Sonic's whack controls. It's not amazing.

The environments are beautiful, the story is rich with many characters, and the level design is also good. Not on par with Sonic Generations but definitely as good as Sonic Colours. Yes, there are some linear parts but all sonic games have them, but Sonic Forces does provide interesting pathways for you to go through. The earlier levels are quite linear but as you go through the game it gets a lot better. Plus what adds to the replayability is the custom character's Wispons, which also provide alternates path for the character. The boss fights are also very fun to play and challenging, you're gonna have a good time beating all the bosses in the game.

Speaking of custom character, i'm not really into making oc's and customizing, but the game provides you so many extra accessories for completing extra tasks and getting higher ranks and levels, I found myself going back to the custom character's room to see what's new and what fits my liking. I think that's a huge thing for people who are into character customization.

Modern Sonics levels are also pretty fun to play through, although I should mention that the drift is now removed so sonic team have taken a step backwards in terms of controls for Modern Sonic. But the level design is very fun, again, it has linear sections but later in the game the level design really picks up.

Now let's talk about the elephant in the room, Classic Sonic. I was skeptical about classic sonic going into the game like many others, but I gotta say, it's not that bad and I was quite pleasantly surprised. The levels have many multiple pathways and the controls and physics are better than Generations. That being said, it's no where near as good as Sonic Mania but I think that was bound to happen.

So overall, I enjoyed the game from the start and I'd definitely recommend it to Sonic fans but also casual platforming fans. My only complaint is that Modern Sonic's controls could have been better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic forces has its positives and negatives, but in my experience the pros are more than the cons. The negatives of the game are either plot related or gameplay related such as infinites origin and level design, infinites story could have be handled better since it seems weak for his origin is being beaten by shadow. A second con, which is minor is classic sonic which is mostly the fact the story says he is from another dimension insted of saying from the past. Now for gameplay, the levels are bland and short, they had potential, but that potential was never brought. I liked most of them and the bad thing was that they were short to the point I couldnt get immerrsed to the game.

Ok, positives now. The custom character seems like a perfect edition to the sonic world, being part of the resistance felt very great. Second is the inclusion of classic sonic, sure we had sonic mania but the tie in to sonic forces is pretty creative. Third is the fact that Eggman actually won, from time to time he lost, but now he actually won for once. Last is the music, sonic games are well known for their music and this is no exception. While there is more going into detail I feel like this is fine enough.

Modern sonic, the custom hero, the bosses, and the tag team gameplay are definitely the strong points, the game runs at a solid 30fps on switch, and the environments look beautiful, especially when docked. However, this score was brought down by classic sonic's gameplay, despite it being enjoyable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is horrible, the LD is completely linear, the enemies lack artificial intelligence, classic Sonic songs resemble the infamous Sonic 4, the phases are very repetitive and the story is very cliché. The ending is ridiculous, Sonic Classic did not surprise the members of the modern era and the end was a total failure, neither did Modern Sonci give a damn about the classic. The developer thinks that Sonic has to act like a bowling game, which makes racing mechanics look like cell phone racing games. The avatar reminds me a lot of Sonic Boom, the unnecessary introduction of the Wisps is massive, they should not be in this game, Sega could have better explored the elements of Sonic Mania like the classic Eggman, the Titanic Monarch the HBH the emeralds and the Litle Planet. I bet Sega thought about putting this damn Sonic but that changed his mind during the critics. The game is very short and finally can be worse than Sonic Unleashed, Sonic 4 and Sonic 2006. Expand

This game is great this game is way better than colors and generations combined. It is now my favorite modern sonic game period. To add the cherry on top of this game is that you can create your own character, and that is something really special and I think they should have that again in the next sonic game. Rock on sonic team.

The level designs are fine and I don't mind them in the same areas. I do mind of how they use the same foundations. Most noticeable is the City areas where I find the same spots with different things scattered around.

The story was really a mess and I never felt Eggman's takeover real since a lot of stuff was off screen or in text. Also classic Sonic and most of the other characters don't seem to have a point to being in the game. I'm not easily annoyed by them but it feels like they're just there to show they exist. I mean why is Silver here and not Blaze or Cream?

Classic Sonic is now said to be from another dimension when before he was from the past. No one like Retcons!

Overall it was good but would have been better if they worked harder on their priorities and story telling.

Avatar's controls are a mess, the character goes from walking to dashing in a second, even if you slightly press the stick and this results in cheap deaths because of the levels that don't fit in this control scheme because you have to walk longer than a second before jumping and just before jumping you accidentally dash and fall off.

The first levels of Sonic Forces are disappointing and the last levels are infuriating. Two boss battles are fine and creative (Zavok and Mystic Jungle Infinite), two of the three battles against Infinite are confusing and the final battle is challenging in the wrong way. The music and presentation is the best that the game has to offer, since the story relies too heavily on negative feelings and death in a serious way instead of cartoony and comical like before. The first time you play the game you'll get tons of notices with useless cosmetics for your avatar. This is not the worst Sonic game ever but it's certainly the most disappointing. If Sonic Generations is 10/10, this is 1/10.

The Classic stages falter slightly when it comes to music. They use a Pseudo-Genesis sound, when they should have probably used a proper Genesis sound chip. Without it, the music feels just a little off. They are good music pieces, but are also an acquired taste.
Overall, a fun, if flawed, game, and one I recommend at least one playthrough.

I feel differently about this game. On one hand, it presents gripping action with a story that asks"What would the heroes do if the villains actually won?", the music is simply beautiful and breathtaking, and the inclusion of the avatar is brilliant. On the other hand, some of the gameplay could be improved, and there was no reason for Classic Sonic to be in other than Sonic Team needing more revenue and deciding to link this game with Sonic Mania.

I'm intrigued by its story, and have never seen a dark attempt since Sonic 06. Yeah, I went there. However, there was one part I was very disappointed in, which was the backstory given to Infinite. Basically... Shadow calls him weak, and that's it, that's what drives him. Also, Tails's link isn't very emotional. I would have personally liked to see if he was able to stand up without any Sonic. I actually remember when Tails did things without Sonic. Where did that Tails go...?

While the gameplay is impressive, some parts are either missing or broken. Let's start with the broken - all of Classic Sonic doesn't feel like it functions correctly. With more focus on the drop dash, the controls of Classic Sonic don't feel the same as before. He controlled brilliantly in Generations, yet the same people who made Generations, made Forces. Why couldn't they have used the same controls? Also, from Modern Sonic's controls, some stages could have needed the important drift control, yet it was missing. This resulted to the bane of Forces - Metropolitan Highway.

My opinion on this game is that it is a high recommendation for Sonic fans, and a possible recommendation for newcomers to the franchise. I would, however, like to add that even though I am a huge Sonic fan, this does not mean I will automatically think the games are perfect. I do like the game, but I am still able to spot the flaws. I also hope that Sonic Team will listen to our opinions in order to soon create the perfect Sonic game for all fans.
Also, Sonic Team, a little word of advice - we love Classic Sonic, but it's time to stop using him simply for revenue, and keep him in his own dimension of retro 2D.

I like this story because it is something fresh and pretty surprising, I felt attached to this story and usually in sonic games I ignore the story a little and focus 100% on beating the game 100% but this one had a very memorable story, not to say sonic stories suck though.
Gameplay- The gameplay in this game though not the best is still fun, The levels though not memorable or ones I will remember much are still fun to blaze through.
Music-Though this is no crush 40 at all the music is still great like all sonic games even if its one of the weaker sonic soundtracks.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Modern Sonic- Overall I was pretty happy with the playable characters, and modern sonic is no exception. I didn't really have any problem with Modern Sonic at all. He went at reasonable speeds, was mobile and agile enough to reach different parts of his stages and was well overall, a good experience gameplay wise. Gameplay aside though, like many others have notices Modern Sonic's story in forces wasn't great. Its noticeable that *SPOILERS* after being tortured by Eggman for months sonic still egotistical. Sonic personality also contributes highly to the custom characters story and his happy output helps push the friendship feeling along, but there’s no denying the drawback here. The story just didn’t go as far as most of us with modern sonic.
Classic Sonic-Classic Sonic is similar to modern sonic, well made gameplay and feel but ultimately a drawback from the story. It's not that modern sonic exactly makes the story bad, it's just, he appears out of nowhere and we just get an explanation for it later. That's not bad its just. The way Classic Sonic coincidently comes in right next to tails when he’s about to get hurt seems to far fetched. Once again, there could have been story building here.
Custom Character-Out of all the playable character custom character is one of my favorites to play as. Say what you will but the Custom Character is not a drawback in my book. Starting out with multiple option when it comes to look and species, including species specific abilities (for example, if your custom character is a bird, you can double jump), but even after creation the custom character evolves. Soon after playing multiple levels and completing missions, you earn new wisps(useful weapons you custom character uses) and new clothing and hairstyles really helps the custom character shine. There’s so much supporting custom character since you can experiment with different wisps and change up you play style. This experimentation especially after beating Forces campaign (which allows you to make multiple different custom characters) provides much more content than forces is given credit for having. That said, like modern sonics boost ability, these wisps end up being pretty overpowered, allowing you to practically speed through enemies with little skill needed. However in recent years, getting good scores in sonic games requires speed, speed that without these wisps might not be accomplished so easily, for better of for worse. Finally we come to the custom characters, story. Unlike the other characters, the custom character has some really fulfilling and satisfying character development. You get to see your character get over his fears with the help of sonic (seems like sonics ego wasn't terrible after all) and grow to become skilled, happy, and friends with the resistance. It was disappointing though to see the character that we came to love so much leave the resistance, with little chance of being in a new sonic game.

    Stages
Since all the stages have one common flaw and because modern sonic and the custom character share similar sometimes the same stages, I’m going to be brief here. Stages is possibly Forces biggest fault. We just lose the freedom of stage from the classic games, even in classic sonics stages. WHat I mean by this is there used to be multiple ways to complete a stage in classic sonic games, you wouldn't necessarily always know where you were going but you knew you were going somewhere. Recent sonic games, forces included have just abandoned that, sure you can climb higher and higher to find secrets (something notably more difficult as classic sonic) but that's basically it. Even more disturbing is the abandonment of no risk, no gain from the original sonic games. Most secrets and reward in classic sonic games were at the highest point in the maps, the hardest place to get to and stay at. But with the new direct one way to do things map, that system has been abandoned. Don't get me wrong, I think the stage overall, look stunning and have a lot of work put into them, but it's just not enough like the essential style of the original.
Difficulty-Forces just doesn't have the original difficulty. The game has about 30 stages and only around 7 of them are truly difficult. What's more is that theres no 5 live thing, lose all your lives start over from this point. Without this difficulty standard, Forces just isn't difficult enough.
Content- You would think with 30 stages that forces is brimming with content. But because of low difficulty, you could speed through the stages in less than a day. Forces did make an effort for more content with SOS missions which tell you to return to a previous stage to help the resistance, but this is just repetitive. Once again though, the multiple play styles of the avatar provide more content. Itsw worth mentioning though that the super sonic and shadow gameplay provides fun experimentation, but Super Sonic was free for only a limited time

Sonic Forces is difficult to understand. It had so much potential, and so much going for it, and so many good games to learn from. However, it is bizarre that Sonic Team can't quite get things right, even when it seems like it shouldn't be that hard. Let's start with the gameplay:

Controls/Mechanics: The controls are fairly decent. Not perfect, but certainly not even close to as awful as games like Sonic 06. Like many other things in this game, the controls are much like Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. However there are a few changes. Things feel a little more tough to control than they should be, and sometimes I found myself falling off an edge or running into an enemy due to the choppy controls. The main problem is probably the jumping in the 2D sections. It is difficult to get your character to land exactly where you would like them to. Other than that, things usually work pretty smoothly. I should also note that if you've recently played Sonic Mania, the "Classic Sonic" levels in Forces will be a little hard to get used to. It's not that its bad, but Mania's controls were nearly perfect, but the classic sonic levels in Forces are where the controls are the worst in the game. It will be tough to get used to after Mania. The changes they made to Modern Sonic's mechanics are very welcome for the most part. While there are many small changes to how things work, the main differences are in the boost and the jump. I will be comparing them to Generations, since it is more recent, and I have not played Colors. In comparison, Forces' boost is very powerful. It is just about as fast, but is not slowed down by jumping or inclines. Where it is really different is the midair boost. If you jump once and boost in midair, Sonic will actually be angled upwards for a moment, giving you a surprising amount of distance. And as long as you have energy left, Sonic will continue to boost at full speed through the air. In parts of levels where you are going downhill, you can use the boost to literally fly over the level. while some may think it is too overpowered, in my I found that it made things more interesting, and resulted in more complicated and fun speedruns. It made the game more fun to play overall. Also, Sonic now has a double jump in place of being able to perform a homing attack with no enemies nearby. I'm not sure which action I would rather have, since it is really fine either way.

Level Design: This is where the game suffers the most. At least half of the levels are far too short. I found myself shocked at how quickly some of them ended. You see, in Sonic games, the goal is to go fast. And when you are going fast, you will probably finish the levels pretty quick. Fortunately, the Sonic games typically take care of that problem by making the levels very long. The average Sonic level should take around 2 and a half minutes to complete for a gamer of average skill. But in Forces, some of the levels can be beaten in around 1 and minute and 45 seconds, without even trying that hard. While some of the levels are of decent length, the short levels are a recurring annoyance. Also, the level design itself is not perfect either. While linearity is not inherently bad, there are times where things get a little boring and easy. The other problem is that there are too many scripted scenes, in which the game takes all control away from you, literally turning parts of the level into cut-scenes, while occasionally giving you a small button prompt that doesn't actually have anything to do with completing the level, as the "cut-scene" is the same no-matter what, all it determines is how many points you get. It's important to not let these problems get in your way of enjoying the game though. Despite these problems I found myself genuinely enjoying most of the levels. Some of them were excellent, and I don't think there was a single level that I would call bad. Maybe one or two average ones, but there are 30 levels in the game, so its not a big problem.

Story: I liked the story. it wasn't perfect, but it was fun, a little bit dark, and most importantly, it actually existed. Too many platforming games, even many Sonic games, put a very minimum amount of effort into the story, but Sonic Forces makes you actually interested in the characters and events going on. just make sure you play "Episode Shadow", once you've gotten to around stage 10 in the main game. I do have a problem with the fact that much of the dialogue occurred via your communicator on the world map, instead of a cut-scene. Don't get me wrong though, there are tons of cut-scenes, 29 to be exact, and most of them are very well done. It's just that there is so much dialogue that they put in this game, much of it happens on the world map, or even during the levels, which can be quite annoying.

Overall, Sonic Forces is a flawed but fun game. Sure, it made some sill mistakes, but if you like Sonic games at all, you'll love Sonic Forces. It's just plain fun.

Modern Sonic is basically the same as colors, though his momentum is a bit weird, and his jump is very low, unless you hold the jump button

The custom character is basically Modern, except without the boost and with the wispon. The wispons are implemented decently for the most part, though a problem I have is that certain stages require certain wispons to get an S rank.

Classic Sonic is the worst part of the game, but its not too bad. the levels are, enjoyable but nothing great, and Iron Fortress in particular is the literal worst.
    ranking: 7/10

    Graphics:
The graphics look really good. Even in the switch version. The models look high quality, and the lighting and animations look better than ever. The Switch version has a few problems though, such as the framerate and the textures looking low quality at times.
    The Switch version
    ranking: 8.5/10

Story: The story is okay, but could be a lot better. For one, the returning villians were pointless, the Phantom Ruby isnt taken to its full potential, Infinte's backstory is skimmed over so much that all were left with is the "I am not weak" cutscene, and the friendship between tails and classic sonic came out of nowhere. However, the story felt like it had stakes, and actual problems to overcome, unlike the past few games in the series, and the custcences are very well animated and written. in fact, the best part of the story is the characters. Sonic acts more light hearted like the adventure days, and not mean spirited like in the modern era, Amy is competent without being annoying as hell like in sonic boom, and knuckles isnt an all out idiot. Even Infinite, despite having literally no backstory was a pretty good character in his lust for power and his sadistic personality. Still, I wish that the story was better, and hope for higher quality in the future
    ranking: 7/10

    Level design:
The level design can be pretty good, but never gets as good a generations, but at the same time never goes to downhill to be considered bad (besides Iron Fortress). Levels like Mortar Canyon, and Null Space are the best as they are large and open stages, and are very replayable. Levels like egg gate and luminous forest are a lot less open but are still fun for their fast paced and satisfying action. And levels like Capital City, Imperial Tower, and Virtual Reality are levels which showcase how the game can very effectively tell the story through the levels. Though sometimes, the levels can be bland and forgettable like casino forest, and arsenal pyramid. The episode shadow dlc adds 3 new levels to the mix, and i'd say they're the best boost levels in the game, especially enemy territory.
    ranking: 7/10

Conclusion: The game has a lot of ups and quite a few downs, but If you ask me, the game is overall pretty good. As for how it ranks in terms of the boost games, Generations Reigns supreme, but forces is above colors by a decent margin, and just a hair behind unleashed.

In a game like Sonic Mania, you are given multiple routes to go, and depending on how good you are at controlling your character you can find all kinds of secrets and find different ways to play through the stages; Sonic Forces has one single path to go down, with a red star ring sometimes hidden in a spot that might be a little inconvenient to get to, and that's it. Same goes for the villain.

The main villain, Infinite, was not all that great. He really had no backstory or real reason to be in the game. In the games first cutscene you are lead to think that Dr Eggman ( Sonic’s arch-enemy) had created Infinite and the Phantom Ruby (basically The Phantom Ruby is a gemstone that creates powerful illusions that cause panic and confusion) when really that’s not the case. They tried to give him a backstory in the downloadable content but it was weak and unnecessary. Then there was a weird time jump where Sonic has been captured and Eggman takes over 99% of the planet. Sonic’s friends form a small resistance to battle against Eggman. This point is where they tried to bring in your customized character to the storyline but it was clumsy and really did not contribute much. The main levels consisted of two-dimensional levels for Classic Sonic and three-dimensional levels for modern Sonic and your custom character.

The final boss was a big disappointment. (Spoiler Alert) it was just Eggman in a super beefed-up robot powered by the Phantom Ruby. The game ends with the world being saved and Classic Sonic going back to his universe. So to sum it all up if the developers had spent a little more time on the plot and added more levels, the game could have been better. The levels were fun and the character creator was fun but unnecessary. I would rate the game a 6 out of 10. It was pretty entertaining but very short and (if given the time) I could beat it in one day. They sacrificed a good storyline for decent level designs. They really tried to cram too much into this game. It was not one of my all time favorites. A better game that I would recommend is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It has a great storyline and is seemingly endless.

Sonic Forces has multiple problems- the game is too short, the story is convoluted and rushed, and the animation is choppy- but the gameplay still feels great. There's sparks of brilliance in this game, but it's never fully realized. It seems more like a proof of concept than an actual, full-fat game, but the idea itself is intriguing enough to make me want to see more. What Sonic Team needs to do is rebuild this game from the ground up, which would make it a Switch essential. Sonic Forces would greatly benefit from a story that takes more than 2 hours to complete in full, maybe up to ten, with a complete removal of Classic Sonic. A Shadow the Hedgehog-esque branching story would make it even more replayable. Multiplayer options, such as taking your custom character into raid-style battles on Eggman's massive Badniks with other players would increase the incentive to keep playing even more. Overall, Sonic Forces is a game full of unrecognized potential, and doesn't stay as long as it should, but is still fun and replayable to an extent. Expand

The game doesn't do enough to be truly great. It's not a bad game, but it's too safe. The Classic Sonic gameplay was unnecessary, while the rest of the gameplay is passable at best.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game was alright going in. I thought most of the modern Sonic stages were fun, and about half of the avatar stages were fine and dandy... but classic Sonic. Ow. How did he get so broken. In Generations, he was fun to play, but here... you basically have to rely on the drop dash. The bosses early on were fun, but the last fight against Infinite and the fight against Metal Sonic were practically the same. And the final boss! It was the first phase was basically just a harder version of the Egg Dragoon, and the third phase was the final boss of Sonic Colours for the third time! At least the second phase was okay. Reminded me of the Sonic Adventure games... I should slap myself for saying that. Now the story... wow. You tried, Sonic Team. You tried to make a dark story, but you botched it up badly. Overall, I thought the game was alright. Certainly a passable game, but not one I would recommend. If you wanna get it, go ahead, I won't stop you. In my opinion, I think it's one of the weaker Sonic titles in the series. As literally anyone else would say... It's not THAT bad. Expand

Voice acting Is quite good and messing around In the Custom hero Customisation Is fun. With that out of the way let's go Into why I don't like this game. The story and dialouge Is complete dumpster fire with a lot of miss potiental especially with the new villian Infinite who Is given such a pathetic back story In a pretty useless Dlc pack. There's so much stupid moments from claiming Sonic Is tortured for months but when you see him he Is completly fine. Classic Sonic being there all cause of marketing since 2011s Sonic Generations was a hit. Many things In the story just happen off screen and are only explained during text on a black screen. Finally Tails Is so stupid In this game. The moment where they say "He's gone insane" when he clearly Isin't and then got scared by Chaos 0 made me want to throw my controller at my screen. Infinite Is a weak villian which sucks since the marketing and his design made him look so cool but In the game he Is just so terrible. His motivation for being a villian was because Shadow called Him childish names. I am not jokeing It Is as sad as It sounds. Enough about the dreadful story let's talk about the gameplay. Theres 3 type of gameplay styles. 1st Mordern Sonic. What The Hell did they do to him? When he runs It's so off because unlike previous games like Colours Unleashed and Generations he doesen't slowly bulid up to the full speed but Instead after 2 seconds of moving he will blast off. This feels so unatural and especially doesen't help where your In a game with boringly designed levels. 2nd Custom Hero. Probably the best of the 3 but still not great. The wispon weapons are a cool Idea and sometimes can be fun in the levels but sadly ruined by again levels that are super boring. Could of been a great Idea If the levels were fun. And finally Classic Sonic. NOPE. That's all I need to say. Also his level music Is trash. That green hill level makes my ears bleed with that music. As I mentioned previous there are positives with this game but overall Sonic Forces was a complete disapointment from jank controls to a terrible story with boring levels and tons of miss potiential. I ocasionally go back to speed run the ocasional Mordern Sonic level but thats It. Do not recommend. 4/10 Expand

I had hopes for this game at first, but when I look back at it, it's just depressing.

Infinite sounded like a cool villain, but he turned out to be pretty generic. He's just a guy who felt like causing chaos for the hell of it. And then there's the Jackal Squad who wasn't even talked about at all beyond being shown in a few panels in the prequel comic and getting "destroyed" by Shadow.

And then there's the Jackal Squad who wasn't even talked about at all beyond being shown in a few panels in the prequel comic and getting "destroyed" by Shadow. Oh, and when they were beaten, he tries to avenge them, but gets put on his ass by Shadow's sudden teleporting without a Chaos Emerald. Shadow **** talks him before leaving, setting Infinite over the edge. Liam O' Brian voices him perfectly, but there's only so much a voice can do for bad writing. People are understandably confused about his ability since it's described inconsistently. Tails explained it pretty well with it essentially affecting the brain to cause all kinds of effects as if you were in a dream that can affect your real self. Still a li'l confused? Think of the power of suggestion--better yet, for you Jojo fans out there, think of Whitesnake's disks which can also give commands, including extreme ones like EXPLODING, to those they're inserted into. Now, this would be fine if it weren't for the fact that the Ruby's power was already established as reality warping which is ALSO shown when monster versions of Infinite are materialized in Metropolis. Then again, reality warping is pretty related to illusions, so I'll leave it at that.

First of all, stop with the Classic Sonic! He has absolutely no reason to exist in this game (or any game that isn't Sonic Generations). He has the fewest stages of the three characters and to add insult to injury, he's now from another dimension instead of being younger Sonic. And at the end where Sonic says he'll be back is just the calm before the storm... along with Green Hill. Quick summarization of the gameplay: Sonic and the avatar are stiff, shallow, and automated while young Sonic is stiff and sloppy, not even able to go up an incline after runnin' down a massive downward slope.

Anyway, the story ties into Sonic Mania. Young Sonic exists for no reason and the Phantom Ruby is a random plot device that conveniently lands on Egghead's front doorstep... again. Sonic confronts the man of eggs who has another plot of the day in the form of Infinite, a jackal (who I thought was a bat at first glance) with illusion powers via the Phantom Ruby. He shows up with Eggman to kick Sonic's ass with obvious clones of past villains while Tails watches. Months later, Sonic is presumed dead only to be confirmed alive seconds later and here's where your avatar comes in.

The avatar is a Sonic FanFiction writer's dream come true. You can customize their look from somewhat of a variety of options. I've seen character customization done better in other games. Here, you have a few species to choose from, very few base species design options, and three color variants of most pieces of clothing. Then there's a Sanic ****post shirt as DLC. After you customize your look, you're off. Unlike Sonic, Burton (which is what I referred to my avatar as) uses a Wispon which is as busted as Sonic's boosting though some take a bit more effort to use.

Back to the story. Burton saves Sonic who already kinda saved himself by beating the Zavok clone and they both go back to HQ... Young Sonic and Shadow one-shot two of the four clones... Sonic and Burton beat the last clone who was already a fake of something that wasn't real... Sonic fights Infinite and loses, but is left alive again for the hell of it... Burton fights Infinite and gets his ass kicked, but is saved by a Phantom Ruby prototype that Infinite should've clearly seen and later gets sent to Null Space with Sonic for ~20 seconds before they "gotta go fast" outta there somehow... The final battle begins and Infinite tries to drop a sun on The Resistance AND Eggman, but the prototype saves the day... Sonic and Burton fight Infinite one last time before he unwillingly disappears into the reactor due to the man egg's intervention and an underwhelming boss fight happens and boom, suddenly a "Let's change the world together!" speech for no reason.

I didn't mention some stuff since it wasn't worth bringin' up. Notice the Chaos Emeralds are never mentioned beyond some bull**** $3.00 DLC that doesn't make the game any better. Super Sonic ain't worth it; you can already boost through everything as it is and there's no reason to play young Sonic like this since he still controls like ass. I don't know how they forgot the Chaos Emeralds. Maybe they saw that Mania already used 'em and thought the power of friendship can be a replacement for 'em in this game. One thing I could give praise for is the music (except young Sonic's stage music). My only problem is they use too much synth. I'd love to hear 'em without it.

Overall, this is some ****ty FanFiction and my hopes aren't all that high for what's next.

First off, the positives. The game graphically looks great, and the dialogue isn't as bad as you'd think. However for me, that's where the positives ends.

Now, let's get into the thick of it. Yes, the levels are ridiculously short as you may of heard, but The clones are basically filler and really don't exist. The same could be applied to Classic Sonic.

Now. The Avatar. A good idea in concept, but ended up being completely **** in every way. This breaks canon in every way possible. A character that has the stereotypical "Suddenly Appearing Protagonist." Brilliant.

The story tries to go for a dark tone, but fails. We expected Sonic and friends desperate, we got none of it.

For the gameplay itself, It feels to easy, even on hard. The characters controls are wonky, especially Classic Sonic. The bosses are lackluster and some are even reused.

Now, this all would have been forgivable in my eyes if the game hadn't been in development in 4 years. 4. **** YEARS. They built an engine instead of the damn game for 3 years, so that left only one year to develop it. Shame.

Overall, the game sucks, and is the 4th worst Sonic game in the entire series. The next game will decide the fate of Sonic for sure, and I'm not talking about Sonic Colors: Ultimate, that released already and I'm already casting doubt into it. If the new game goes well, we'll celebrate. If not, the entire world has prepared a coffin for Sonic.

I understand and appreciate that the Sonic franchise as a whole is divisive, and for many good reasons. However, I often struggle to see how Sonic Forces is considered to be one of the weaker entries. Sure, the game is with its flaws ... in fact, let's get those out of the way. The story gets oddly dark in some spots (callback to when Sonic was being tortured) and the story overall isn't perfect, sure. Me, personally, I'm not entirely playing for the story, but I appreciate that a decent story is there and in tact. The bonus Shadow DLC is kinda blah at best. And the game overall is way too short. However, the positives? I feel like the 2D platforming is incredibly fun. Sure, its no Sonic Mania or any of the classics, but it brings a fresh, fun take on it, building upon some of the 2D platforming from Generations. The 3D platforming was a lot of fun, too. Some spots here and there may have been tedious, but overall, it provided for great gameplay. And while I didn't fully invest into customizing every aspect and unlockable for my character, toying around with the options was still great fun. Overall, a really fun game in its own right with a few flaws; this game does not get the credit it deserves, though. Expand

This game is dissapointing on so many levels. Sonic unleashed and sonic generations demonstrated how good and fast you can control sonic with amazing Level Designs. In sonic forces, you mostly only need tu push the analog stick forward and the story is a mess. No sonic game has a deep story, but at least they were fun, simple, engaging and gave a good excuse to do what you needed to do.This game is dissapointing on so many levels. Having loved the previous "boost formula" Sonic games (Unleashed, Colors, and Generations), I had high hopes. Sadly, this does not live up to any of the previous entries and strips away more control away from the player. Even Classic Sonic controls worse than ever. How did they break what was already working? Giving it a 4 because it technically "works" and a small child might have fun, but anyone who's played other entries in the entire Sonic series will instantly feel the downgrade. I simply can't recommend this game to anyone. Expand

Very disappointing compared to past titles. Level design is almost non-existent, you're constantly running in a straight line doing absolutely nothing except holding down boost. Physics are also very wonky compared to Gens and Unleashed. The story is one of the worst stories I've seen in a Sonic game, a step up from '06, but that's it. Extremely cringe. It's not a bad game, but after four or so years, it just feels like it ought to be better. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 35E]

Sonic Forces may be a misstep from this year’s Mania, but it’s still an enjoyable title. While it suffers from a host of problems with pacing and performance, it still is worth a weekend rental with its surprisingly entertaining plot and great music.

Sonic Forces may have created some hype but unfortunately, it mostly falls flat on its face as it quickly becomes obvious that this game is an exercise in disappointment. While the action runs smoothly whether on a television screen or on handheld mode, the game's short and unimaginative levels, the absence of gameplay mechanics that had become a staple of 3D Sonic games, the unreliable controls and the mediocre soundtrack all add up to a very flawed game from which a lot more was expected.
