I struggled upon whether to give this game a 7 or an 8. I ultimately decided on the latter, though it's a low 8; an 8.0 or an 8.1.

I struggled upon whether to give this game a 7 or an 8. I ultimately decided on the latter, though it's a low 8; an 8.0 or an 8.1.

First, I'll go over the positives. The graphics are great, really making the paper aesthetic stand out. The story is a definite improvement over those of Sticker Star and Color Splash, featuring a new villain and Bowser as an anti-hero. The characters are generally likeable (including main companion Olivia), and their lines can be pretty funny. There is also some character variety, though still not to the level or creativity of the first three games.

Now for the negatives. The battle system, in which you move panels to attack enemies, feels quite convoluted, especially in boss battles. In addition, battles usually seem rather pointless from a progression perspective as there are no experience points; usually, the only rewards for completing them are confetti (used to fill in parts of the world) and coins, which are found in abundance in the world anyway.

Overall, The Origami King is a fine entry in the series. An improvement over Color Splash, but it doesn't reach pre-Sticker Star heights.

It's a fun game, it actually is, the dialogue is clever and funny, to the point of making the story and everyone a joke, which can be ok depending on who is playing, the visuals are gorgeous, even tho for me paper Mario was never about the pape, it was called Mario story for a reason in Japan, this game has a story so simple it's even simpler than pm64. It is in the gameplay where this game is lackluster or mediocre at most it is tedious, tiresome and it's not required even tho the game forces them on you because in other way, they would be pointless. So, for me, the game is fun, and may be worth a rent. I imagine it like going to a theater to go see the phantom of the opera and you get a musical without the story just random people dancing with the costumes of the characters, it's fun, and it's still awesome to look at but it's not the phantom of the opera. It's a kids show, and that's what this game is. It's just a game, not more, not less, it does as much wrong as it does good, so it's a 5. Just mediocre. That said, as people are giving it 10s, I'll fight back those with a low score of my own, even if it doesn't represent the score I believe it deserves. Expand

Paper Mario The Origami King is a Good game, nice graphics, story again interesting, finally a world that is connected. The combat system is acceptable, I think the boss combat system is very good. Paper Mario fans should now realize that the Paper Mario series is no longer an RPG series. There are already 4 Paper Mario games that are based on Action Adventures and less on an RPG. I am livening this game! A couple of things to note if you’re just starting out. The first couple of hours are rather simple. The puzzles are easy and the battle system seems like a joke. KEEP PLAYING. I’m sure this is by design, but I can see how this would put people off at first, myself included. But after about 90 minutes of gameplay last night I was completely hooked. I have since poured approximately eight hours in and am still finding new things to love about this game. The game is a joy to play. Do yourself a favor, and pick it up. Expand

A quick 30-seconds-or-less fight becomes a tedious 5 minute battle because you spend so much time trying to align enemies on every turn, and if you don’t get it perfect on the first try, you are forced to do even more turns because you can’t possibly attack in all directions. First of all, I'm justa couple hours into the game, I defeated the first streamer boss and just started the second ''chapter''. So far the game is really really good. There are a couple things I would change in term of the comabt system, but except that part of the game, I wouldn't change anything (except maybe the extreme amount of hand holding at the start of the game.)

There are a couple things I would change in term of the comabt system, but except that part of the game, I wouldn't change anything (except maybe the extreme amount of hand holding at the start of the game.)

First of all, every artistic aspects of the game are great, the visual, the music, the writing, it all deserves a good 10/10 just by itself, I love how the world feels like an actual world and not just an art project like Color splash (how the sky, the horizona nd all were also, paper, now it is pretty much a normal sky). I am a huge collectathon fan, so finding each and every toads, fishing, filling up every empty spots with confeties is amazing.

Basically, the game would get a good 10/10 from me if it wasn'T for a couple things with the combat. Don't get me wrong, this is one of if not THE best and most interesting combat system I have played yet, even the lack of experience points, I don'T particularly mind because pretty much every ''chapters'' have it's own progression. The thing with it lies in how easy it is and how redundant it is at some points. What do I mean by how easy it is? The moment you start the fight, the enemies are already positioned in the most optimal way and you just recreat it super easily, get a damage buff and 1 shot all of them, there are more enemies than usual? don'T worry, the system gave you a free extra action. The other part is how you pretty much only jump and smash with your hammer, it is redundant and I hope later in the game you get something more amazing than ''shiny boots'' or ''metal boots''. Boss fights are amazing, no problems with that.

I give it a 9/10 despite it'S flawed combats because I bought it because I wanted to play an adventurous puzzle game and on that part, it more than delivered, the combat is mind numbingly easy and redundant, but I still like to do them and I love to see the coins pile up (thank you for removing the 9999 coins cap) and see it as a high score.

If you enjoy this game, I am very happy for you. I wanted to enjoy this game too, but I don't want to lie to myself either. Battles that aren't mandatory feel pointless and are usually not worth the effort, since the only reward you get is coins, coins, coins, and more coins. The confetti mechanic feels wrong, since confetti is so common, I have no idea why there is even a limit to how much confetti you can hold. "Oh, I ran out of confetti. Time to walk over to some trees to get some more." The confetti mechanic feels like it's there mostly to pad out time. Bosses, while admittedly creative, aren't all that memorable and are laughable in comparison to some of the stronger designs in the series. There are many other issues with this game, but it's a good time-waster if you're looking for that. As for me, I was hoping for a more robust, involved Paper Mario. While the world exploration scratches that itch, the combat, the confetti, the character designs being mostly lackluster, and the pointless combat encounters crawling through the stages leave a bitter taste in my mouth, where I expected a sweet one. 4/10 for me, but again, if you like this game, don't let me rain on your parade. This game definitely has its merits, although it wasn't enough for me to excuse its many flaws. Expand

Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
