Octopath Traveler has been a quite enjoyable experience. The graphics that most complain about are well detailed and the sprites are easy to see and detailed. The dynamic ways the background is used gives it a almost pop-up book feel, (probably why the Wayfarer Edition had one), and overall it gives Octopath Traveler a look not any other game has achieved.

Story wise each character partakes in their own and while some character's story didn't draw me in at first, others were very entertaining.

Combat is enjoyable and the complexity picks up when you add more characters to your party.

The music is quite enjoyable as well. There are the combat tracks that stick with you after you set the game down alone with the characters quotable lines but you also have tracks that help deliver a specific emotion the game wants you to know. Overall the music is very fitting for the game and the bonus is it's quite good!

I received the Wayfarer Edition and for what I was expecting I was very happy with the product. It came with 8 pages of a pop-up book that has great detail even for a pop-up book. I do wish that it was easier to have a page from the book stand up so I can display it. The coin is very detailed and quite real. (Did the classic bite test.) The cloth map is nicely detailed with art of the map and official art on the back. It also came with a 14 track CD of some of the game's music. I have yet to listen to it, but it seems most of the common music is recorded on it.

I have tested most of the English and Japanese voice cast and there are some characters that will make you chuckle from their acting, but overall I really enjoyed the cast in Japanese and English. If you don't like one or the other, you can freely choose to change the language option.

Overall Octopath Traveler is an excellent game for those who enjoy playing RPGs. I'm giving this game a 9 because I believe it does many things well and earns this score by nailing down what makes this game fun, but I do wish there was a bit more interaction between the characters and some of the characters felt a bit generic in terms of story telling that for me drop it from being a score of 10.

I really enjoy this game and I hope you do as well. Onwards Travelers.

A breath of fresh air in an action RPG dominated time. Square found a way to write a love letter to 90's JRPG fans. Innovative combat, wonderful music, and a colorful cast make Octopath Travelers a great addition to JPRG fans and Switch owners alike.

First thing I have to address the negative comments. Like any game most just seem to be haters and want to see the game crash and burn for no apparent reason, so most of the negative 0 and 1 rating comments seem out of place and unnecessary. Like any game most just seem to be haters and want to see the game crash and burn for no apparent reason, so most of the negative 0 and 1 rating comments seem out of place and unnecessary. Example: Game has bad graphics for today's standards of games in 2018. --- PLEASE READ: Please do not give this game a 0 rating if you like the music but do not like the game, 0 rating is if you hate absolutely everything in a game, liking the music or something in the game can easily bump it up a point or few, personally the music and exploration makes up 50% of this game I find, so that's an easy 5 points, but everyone's observations are different. Also, using poor/oudated GRAPHICs is a poor reason to automatically give the game a 0, otherwise undertale and all indie games released after 2000 should also receive 0 scores. At least be fair and give more reasons in a review on why you feel it deserves that 0 or 1 score.

The graphics and game art style should not surprise anyone who has seen anything about this game, whether it be a trailer or the demo or pictures/videos on social media or even by looking at the back of the box before purchasing the game. The appeal for this game is for nostalgia sake as a throwback to JRPGs from the 90s and some from the early 2000s. This is no different from praise given to indie games with its 16 bit sprites, like Undertale comes to mind and how well received it was for its simple retro graphics.

With old style graphics, there's an element of charm and something extra special in the art style, especially in the backgrounds and how beautifully designed they are.

As for the complaints of fight after fight after fight, it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. The maps for each zone is a little smaller than your typical RPG, so it's to be expected to have more battles and that's also a nostalgic part of older JRPGs where random encounters frustrating us was always a thing. But the battles have their own big charm in this game and it's quite a unique battle system with certain power and weapon weaknesses to break the foe and then how you can boost to use an attack multiple times for more damage. Something similar to the Bravely games, from the same creators who worked on this game.

I like the whole separate character paths and how you can pick and choose which one you want to start and then travel to each one and explore their story, then the other greater element and mechanic is how each character has their own field ability to interact with the world and NPCs.

I've played the game for 10 hours and I'm onto my fourth character, but just yesterday I spent a while just in one city using the character's abilities on each NPC when I got my extra new character, it made revisiting a town worthwhile to interact with each one and that new character specific field ability. Then of course you have your side quests and levelling/equipment system with everything JRPG fans love, not to mention an amazing soundtrack.

I think for a big JRPG fan like myself, especially a fan of older JRPGs, since I grew up with the SNES and PS1/PS2 JRPGs as a kid and teenager, this type of JRPG even in this day and age is a dream-type of JRPG to be made today. It's well worth the purchase.

    FULL REVIEW

I resisted buying a Switch for a long time. I caved in this week, and Octopath Traveler is the first game I bought for it.

The Switch was a pleasant surprise, I like the console very much. Octopath Traveler was a disappointment and it's the reason that made me get an account here.

    THE GOOD

The Graphics - Didn't think this style of pixel art could look prettier and better than FFVI or Chrono Trigger but sonuva **** they actually did it. Also, the fusion between pixel art and the 3D environments gives it a new level that adds a ton of fun to exploring.

The Music - Very well done and fun to listen to but I can't name off the top of my head a JRPG done by SquareEnix that doesn't have a good OST. Even their worst games at the very least always had at least one or two killer tracks -Blinded by Light comes to mind-.

    THE MEH

The Fighting System - If you've played Persona 5 or a game from the Bravely Series, you probably had my same reaction when you noticed you can accumulate Brave -I mean, BOOST points to attack more than once or power abilities and that attacking an enemy's weakness makes them Dizzy for one turn. Problem is, the result is not as challenging or fun as either one, lacking the incredible depth of options and careful balance of Bravely Default and Persona 5. It's a frankenstein monster that while not being bad, doesn't exactly shine either.

The Job System - Calling it a Job System doesn't even really fit, since if you compare it with any other Job System that appeared at SquareEnix, it comes up lacking. What's very weird is how abilities learned. Instead of each one having a different amount of JP needed depending on potency, you can learn almost any ability right off the bat but each subsequent learning takes more JP to learn. 30, 100, 500 (WHAT A JUMP), etc... This in turn forces each ability to not be that crazy, with higher power versions depending on the use of Boost Points in battle. This I feel ultimately forces a lack of options and puts a limit on battle strategies -unlike, again, Bravely Default.-

    THE BAD

The Writing - On their own, the character stories seem decent if not at times pretty standard. We range from the story of revenge to the savior vocation to the thief finding himself in something larger than he expected... What's bad about them is their interaction or lack thereof. For all intent and purposes, it's like these characters exist in different worlds exception made for battles.

In my playthrough I started with Alfyn, the Apothecary. Grabbing the White Mage off the bat seemed like the logical choice, also his Path Ability is arguably the best in the game -more about that later-. His story is standard but the guy is fun, I like his Seiyuu and I can respect the vocation of a guy who wants to do good by the world, and do unto others what was done to him: save lives.

After that I went south, and I met Primerose.

    [SPOILERS HERE]
I immediately felt that something was off when I had to learn her story's beginning through a flashback instead of having Alfyn being part of it. Also, the fact that the flashback featured a character telling Primerose that she's a good soul who doesn't want to bother others while in present time she had just literally told a complete stranger about her lifestory was distracting to say the least.

    But then Yusufa died.

Yusufa was stabbed and thrown off a small cliff and Alfyn, the Apothecary, the character I had started the game with and that had been fighting alongside Primerose in the Catacombs just a couple minutes earlier, wasn't in the cutscene. He wasn't administering FirstAid, he wasn't wipping up a Concoction, he wasn't trying to stop the bleeding. He wasn't there and Yusufa died on the sands.

But then he was fighting the Boss Battle right afterwards.

All the marketing material about the Eight travellers being together is a lie. For all intent and purposes, they're not. This is a lack of attention or just plain not giving a **** about your writing when the entire base concept of your age is 'pick the story order you want' that is frankly insulting.

The Path Abilities - Start with Alfyn. End of story.

No, seriously. There's literally no reason to not start with Alfyn. On top of being a White Mage with also a decent Physical Attack, on top of his Concoction Ability, his Path Ability is Inquire. Aka, by talking to people he discovers hidden items, lore and SIDEQUESTS. They made sidequests OPTIONAL by putting them behind Alfyn's path ability and I feel that by doing this they screwed up the Path Abilities balance. Some are clearly superiors to others.

    Score - 6/10

You're not playing with a party of adventurers so much as a group of strangers silently hanging out together. In a game that gets half of its merit from story alone, this is a bit of a failure. The characters by themselves are fairly interesting with decent stories to them, but that just makes the lack of connection all the more frustrating.

However, If you're looking for old school JRPG, that's what you're getting. But beware, there have been A LOT of "quality of life" upgrades RPGs have gained over the years that this game deliberately leaves out, to be more like the older games. Fights are very repetitive, menus are needlessly complex, the story is slow, and you're going to have to grind A LOT. If you're looking for all of that, which is what us older folks knew growing up, you'll be pleased. If you're a youngin' whipper snapper, this probably isn't the game for you. As an adult that grew up on these games with relatively little free time now, I'm torn. I want to like this, but I don't want to devote my life to it and the failing of the story to unite these individually interesting characters really ruins the momentum I had to play it. Buy at your own risk.

Take into account that this is a first review of my experience so far. I am likely going to edit this review down the line once I sink more time into the game.

    Gameplay
Overall the game feels very good for an RPG. The turn based battles feel fun for someone who is used to the JRPS tropes. The addition of weaknesses gives the game a good flare and the bosses for each characters main story feel challenging enough that they ask a little more of you without being too challenging that you want to throw your controller to the floor (you do use quite a lot of healing against these bosses and it does enough to push you). The classes, however, have their own independent skills that they can use in he overworld which is a nice touch and does make each character feel unique outside of battle, which is a welcome change. Overall, the gameplay feels like a general JRPG but it also does a little to change things up and JRPG fans should feel right at home with this kind of game.

    Graphics
The graphics are done in a bit art style on a 2.5D plane. For me personally, the graphics are actually very appealing. The colour pallete looks very accentuated and well drawn, the sprites look interesting and also surprisingly detailed too considering the art style. Overall, I feel that the graphics are actually very well done and are very true to the JRPG roots that the game is drawing from (considering their hayday was in the 16 bit generation). When this is taken into consideration, I do think that the game very lovingly recreates a style that the game devs likely feel really influenced them. It seems clear to see the devs really enjoyed this type of game and so took their passion for this type of game and translated it as best they could.

    Sound:
The OST is a must for this game. There are some excellent soundtracks for this game and the game beautifully represents each unique area with its own soundtrack, which almost foreshadows what is to be expected from this area. Additionally, the game does very well at making actions and attacks feel punchy and weighty, which can be very helpful as the game can put you into a lot of battles.

    Story:
This is likely where the game somewhat seems to fall for me. You begin by choosing your first character and beginning the story of that character, you then meet more people and start to slowly uncover more of their story. My main problem with this is that so far the stories just do not feel like they are put together, the stories of each individual character just feels like it is not interlinked with the other stories, however, perhaps this is one of those things that requires more play time so that I can see the overarching story and I will likely edit the review once I finish the game. The main downside for me on this independent story approach is that each story will likely be its own independent piece. This does mean that not all stories will be interesting and some stories will just be more worth the playthrough compared to others which can be annoying.

Overall, the game is what you would expect from a JRPG and it does enough to make itself feel independent while not being called a game that just apes the JRPG genre. The story right now is the main sticking point for me but it will likely be more combined as time goes on.

Combine this with a great turnebased battle systeem, a breathing world and a really amazing artstyle and what we have then is a new classic the that can be called in the same breath as FF6, Chrono trigger , FF7,8,9 and lots of other classics. This game is a gem, don't believe those ignorent people that don't understand what makes a classical magical jrpg! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is fantastic, in almost every regard. There are periods of grind, which you can expect from turn based RPGs, but that has always been my bag - so take into account your personal preferences here. The battle system starts off relatively simple and straight-forward, however the game becomes more elaborate as the enemy parties have varied and mixed up vulnerabilities and attack patterns - that you will be putting more thought into how you use your BP more and more as your reach later chapters. Which gets me to the story.

The individual stories are very interesting, as are the characters you enlist and follow along with. Now - while that is true, this leads me to the one (and probably only) main issue I have with the game. The characters rarely interact with one another. Loose ties until later in the game, which seems odd in the early chapters. Just a band of strangers helping each other out or something? But it gets better - I promise (maybe a mild spoiler, I guess).

Additionally, I have to comment on the fact that the Voice acting is standout excellent - an A+ effort for the western release, wish this much effort was put into all VA for Japanese imports. It must be lauded.

I'm finding the handling of light and shadow particularly impressive. Soundtrack is very well crafted. And the combat is really solid, if not particularly innovative. The influence of the Bravely series is easy to see with the ability to stack attacks each round, and we've seen other games that exploit enemy weaknesses to stagger them (P5, etc.). So nothing game changing here, but we've maybe never seen these combat elements integrated in quite this way before and there's a lot of polish to the system they've built.

The individualized stories are just okay. Nothing horrible, and some are better than others, but by-and-large expect a lot of tired tropes and cliches. A little too heavy-handed with the faux-Shakespearean language, and whatever they were trying to accomplish with H'aanit justeth didn'teth worketh.

The game's biggest fault lies with how completely disjointed the individual characters are. The developers obviously weren't going for a singular overarching plot, and the game rather works as a collection of short stories. But there's next to zero interaction between the party members throughout, which can be especially jarring when you trigger a cut-scene with a party of four only to have three of them suddenly disappear. There are also enough common references to the world and connections between characters that there are very obvious points where certain party members *should* have input for the events unfolding in another's story. A few simple lines of dialogue acknowledging new characters when they join the party, and a few dynamic triggers to include auxiliary characters in cut-scenes when appropriate would do have done wonders in establishing some sort of cohesion among the group without any need to tie all the stories back together to face off against a singular enemy.

Fans of traditional JRPG's that are willing to overlook a fairly flat story are probably going to enjoy this game quite a bit. But the lack of cohesion among the core group of characters suggests to me a certain lack of vision, or maybe just laziness, that prevents the game from really being "great."

I wasn't expecting much since I knew it was a throwback to old style JRPGs which isn't a bad thing. However, they really are carrying that torch a little too proudly. Turn-based JRPGs have come along way since the SNES days yet this game seems to want to be focused there. I am not a huge fan of having nothing really outside of my limited turns/spells/sp/etc to dictate the fight. I am not a huge fan of having nothing really outside of my limited turns/spells/sp/etc to dictate the fight. The fights feel padded when you get to a "boss" and not like something you overcame just something you endured. I figured this lack of combat depth must be made up in the story since it is 8 stories connecting together right? Wrong... It seems that there are party members but the members don't interact with one another, they just silently follow who ever the main protagonist of that story is at the time. Overall, kinda disappointing. Expand

If you're looking for a good old JRPG that hits all the right spots yet also tries something new (eight unique stories with not a lot of intertwining) then this is your game. It looks absolutely beautiful, has a very fun and in-depth turn based combat system and will bring you right back to the good old Chrono Trigger/FFVI/etc. days.

Superb English voice overs as well by the way!

Having played medicore JRPG series such as YS and Tales, I got into this game with low expectations. The game turned out to be much better than I expected! Not as good as Persona 5 but definitely worth the cost at release, and I'm very cheap when it comes to games. I paid the full price knowing

One of the best Switch's games right now, excelent storyline, deep and joyful combat system and full of great RPG elemnts. If you're a fan of the 16 bit era you'll love the art style, combined with 3D elements. If you liked the demo, go for it!

I guess this is probably the only RPG that could run on the Wii U... I mean Switch. The combat is horribly repetitive, the story is about as engaging as poking yourself in the eye with a pencil, and the graphics try to be old school, but just look like a cheesy 90's nostalgia act.

12 Hrs de Juego y puedo decir que es el mejor RPG que he jugado desde el FF6, las batallas son divertidas, la música es gloriosa, la historia puede flaquear pero no cuenta, es opinión personal. Los gráficos son arte puro.

The game annoys me a lot actually with all the fights constantly. The graphics ain’t impressive. I mean I know Nintendo ain’t exactly known for good graphics, but I think it would’ve benefited the game more, not making it so pixelated. Idk, I’m not that impressed

My favorite switch game right now, it's pretty much 8 jrpg games in one! Normally I don't even follow the story and just skip all text and cutscenes but these stories got me hooked from the start. Furthermore the game has awesome combat, art ( not graphics, ART ) and music. Most people can easily get 100+ hours out of this game!

The writing and voice acting (when it shows up) is very good. The sound track is really one of the best sound tracks of the year.

And damn, this combat system and character mechanics are so deeply layered and synergistic. This is by far one of the best JRPG battle systems ever. I mean, even 1-on-1 battles at the start of the game are interesting and exciting, and have some strategy to them. How many JRPGs can say that? You're never going to just be pressing A.

The game is also really challenging as well. Octopath Traveler presents us with some of the BEST JRPG boss battles I've played in god knows how long! Even bosses 3-4 hours into the game are seriously epic in size and strategy to defeat them.

And can you believe the game is open-world with tons of exploration and non-linear story progression? And did you know the game is 100 hours long?

Overall, while so many things are the same and polished to a tee, much of the game is very different from JRPGs too, and that's a great thing - it feels modern and not just a remake of the days of yore on your SNES. Yes, the stories of the 8 characters might not tie into a whole, but that's okay - does every RPG have to have the same formula? Octopath Traveler had a vision, and it accomplishes what it set out to do perfectly. It's different, and different is good.

This is easily going to end up somewhere in my top 10 games of the year. The game is awesome. And did I mention the soundtrack was the best this year? Seriously, that alone is a reason to play the game! It's that good!

Got this game yesterday, so one day early, and yeah I don’t like the game so much. As much as the graphics are supposed to be nostalgic, and it isn’t made for everyone, I just don’t like the graphics at all. The game really isn’t as fun as everyone else was hyping it up to be. The fault is mine, I should’ve tried the demo first. Wish I would’ve saved my money

While those looking for a deep, story-heavy RPG might find Octopath Traveler lacking, the game is a hugely enjoyable modern take on traditional turn-based games of yesteryear with a collection of short story, rather than novel-length, narratives. The graphics represent the pinnacle of pixel art and the score is amazing. This game was pretty much a system-seller for me and well worth every penny and hour spent with it.

You can either hate Octopath Traveler’s art direction or love it, but it definitely will not leave you indifferent. Distinct visuals are just one of the game’s many strengths which make it a feast for the fans of jRPGs – and much more than that. It’s not flawless though – the dungeons are bland and there are virtually no relations between the characters in your party as they don’t communicate almost at all. [09/2018, p.66]

Octopath Traveler is unapologetically old-school, and would not have been out of place if it had released back in the golden age of JRPGs.
