Only leaving this review to counter act attemptatreasons moronic review, he clearly doesn't understand what 'user' score means. It doesn't matter what you think it deserves, its what the game earned from its users. Also his review is void because he clearly never played the game. If he did he would of known that there is special party dialog.

Excellent game. More than a throwback to older RPGs. I'm taking my time to level up all of the characters simultaneously and the only "grinding" has been by treating this as an rpg and not using the fast travel system very much, so it doesn't feel like grinding. The battle system is well thought out. I cared about the characters and the stories are well designed.

Nice! This game is something quite unique and a real selling point for the Switch this summer. It looks and sounds fantastic and even though I’ve only played 5 hours I feel compelled to carrying on with this. I’m not really big on JRPGs but the nostalgia and style of this game will appeal to all, not just the 16bit generations.

The first thing you’ll notice about Octopath Traveller is its striking graphical style. It looks, quite simply, like no other game before it. Square Enix has applied Unreal Engine 4 tech to vintage sprite work, creating a world that blends modern polygons with old-school bitmap graphics. The developers have created a storybook world that extrudes the dungeon maps of 16-bit console RPGs into three dimensions, then soaks everything in atmospheric lighting and shadow effects.
The name octopath traveller comes from the fact there are 8 heroes (octo) and they’re all following their own story line. The game’s eight heroes are all well-defined characters, each unique from the others. They distinguish themselves by dialects, personalities and quest goals.
Every element of Octopath Traveller comes together brilliantly to create a refreshing take on the genre. While it channels the spirit of old favourites, it never feels derivative. It genuinely does feel like a 16-bit RPG that has evolved into something new rather than being mere nostalgia-bait anyone who’s been pining for a great RPG will not be disappointed by Octopath Traveller ...whether they want a vintage experience or a brand-new one

    1. Mechanics
The mechanics are smooth and feel great. Its a classic turn based system with the bar showing who turn it is and various action can effect battle order. It may play slow for those with no patience for this type of system but it looks great. Think the battle system from FFX with additional mechanics.

    2. Graphics / Sound
Honestly I was worried about going back to a 16 bit look but I was so wrong to worry. The Sprites are adorable and very expressive. Combine them with excellent lighting and haunting sound tract and you have got a recipe for success. I cannot believe how beautiful this game looks in a classic sense. Final Fantasy has gone for photo realism now adays and Dragon Quest is going with the anime look but Octopath say screw that I can make old school look cool.

    3. Story
The stories are very fun and sometimes haunting. I made a deeper emotional connection with some of the characters in the first few minutes than other video game protags after 15+ hours (Looking at you .Hack... so boring). Really this story was a breath of fresh air after the failures of most other games the past few years. I mean the big titles like GOW, Persona, Horizon, and Nier were all great but leave them behind and none of the non-AAA games really stood out to me UNTIL NOW.

Summary: BUY BUY BUY. I give this game 9/10

Octopath Traveler has been a quite enjoyable experience. The graphics that most complain about are well detailed and the sprites are easy to see and detailed. Story wise each character partakes in their own and while some character's story didn't draw me in at first, others were very entertaining.

Combat is enjoyable and the complexity picks up when you add more characters to your party.

The music is quite enjoyable as well. There are the combat tracks that stick with you after you set the game down alone with the characters quotable lines but you also have tracks that help deliver a specific emotion the game wants you to know. Overall the music is very fitting for the game and the bonus is it's quite good!

I received the Wayfarer Edition and for what I was expecting I was very happy with the product. It came with 8 pages of a pop-up book that has great detail even for a pop-up book. I do wish that it was easier to have a page from the book stand up so I can display it. The coin is very detailed and quite real. (Did the classic bite test.) The cloth map is nicely detailed with art of the map and official art on the back. It also came with a 14 track CD of some of the game's music. I have yet to listen to it, but it seems most of the common music is recorded on it.

I have tested most of the English and Japanese voice cast and there are some characters that will make you chuckle from their acting, but overall I really enjoyed the cast in Japanese and English. If you don't like one or the other, you can freely choose to change the language option.

Overall Octopath Traveler is an excellent game for those who enjoy playing RPGs. I'm giving this game a 9 because I believe it does many things well and earns this score by nailing down what makes this game fun, but I do wish there was a bit more interaction between the characters and some of the characters felt a bit generic in terms of story telling that for me drop it from being a score of 10.

I really enjoy this game and I hope you do as well. Onwards Travelers.

Octopath Traveler quickly has become one of my favorite JRPGS. In my opinion, very few games- be they old or new- can stack up to the overall quality of this game. In my opinion, very few games- be they old or new- can stack up to the overall quality of this game. The music is compelling and original, while also serving as a nice throwback to older titles of this genre. The same can be said of the “16 bit” graphics- the sprites are reminiscent of FF6/Suikoden 2, but Octopath differentiates its models by placing them on a three-dimensional backdrop which creates several instances of “hidden”, FF7-like areas of the map. Generic village interactions can be spiced up with character specific skills (Path Actions), coming in a “good” and “bad” variety. For example, the Warrior and Hunter have “Duel” (good) and “Provoke” (bad) respectively, which allow them to challenge a town member to a fight. There is no consequence if the Warrior loses his 1v1 duel, but the Hunter, aided by a cohort of animal companions, will cause a reputation dip in town on a loss.

Characters all also have unique battle skills in combat (Talents). The fusion of Talents, weaknesses, breaks, role differentiation/flexibility, Skills/abilities, and Battle Point storage/management propels combat to the top of the list of Octopath’s strengths. This combat serves as a clear spiritual successor to Bravely Default, but also is unique enough in its own rights via slight tweaks to its progenitor’s system. Very few battles will ever feel similar, which helps with the stereotypical humdrums of JRPG grinding. The one area in which Octopath falls short is in the plurality of stories- rather than one cohesive tale- accented by the lack of character interactions. All in all, each individual vignette is still compelling enough to hold your attention enough to want to complete each story. If you can look past this, I promise you will not be disappointed with what this game has to offer.

The combat system is a lot of fun, I like how they've put a new spin on the classic turn-based combat which we see in JRPGs most of the time. BPs and vulnerabilities playing key role in this game, it keeps the fights quite fresh and the repetetiveness kicks in much later. All in all, it's a perfect game for what it is... a JRPG for Switch (which I preferably use as a handheld, I haven't even unpacked the dock yet) and damn good at that.

Octopath Traveler does exactly what's promised. It delivers a full old-school JRPG experience while adding a few modern touches, for someone who is too young to have ever played a SNES JRPG, I find this game incredible. You can start with any of the eight characters and your journey continues from there.

The battle system itself is pretty straightforward, it's a traditional turn-based type in which you have to strategize in order to win. The fighters are able to boost their attacks in order to do more damage and strike multiple times, the more turns you get, the more you can boost your attacks. Every enemy (bosses included) has a weakness and you can attack the enemy weakness, if you have a fighter that wields whatever the opponent is weak to. Strike their weaknesses enough times and the enemy will 'break', lose their turn, and be at your mercy. This is the perfect chance to boost your fighter to the max and open up a COWA.

If you ever feel like your fighter isn't packing enough punch, there is a job system. By entering shrines, you can acquire second jobs for your characters. Your character will have their primary job and have the abilities of the second job. These make for very interesting combination, combine the right jobs and you'll have an extremely powerful party. My personal favorite is the warrior+scholar, I combined that and Olberic became a powerful Battlemage (unofficial term).

The characters have their own distinct personalities, and if you're wondering...yes, they do interact with each other! It's not just one character walking up to another and asking to join the party, the characters have actual conversations with each other. I just witnessed Olberic and Cyrus having a conversation about the difference of arena fighting as noble competition and a bloodsport. The characters start to have conversations with each other once you reach the Chapter 2 area. They're Heart-to-Hearts from Xenoblade, short, yet interesting.

The stories of the travelers do not converge. No they don't end up fighting one big baddie in the end, that may disappoint some gamers, but for those who have the patience there is lore at the end of the game that explains how all the stories are connected in a way. The individual stories of the characters may seem a little cliche to some, but they're overall interesting and make you want to continue. However, because of strong enemies, you may have to level up a bit before continuing your journey.

All that being said, no game is without its flaws. My only problem with this game is how grindy it can be it times. You'll have to do a lot of fighting to get gold for your weapons and armor, but that's with every JRPG so I shouldn't complain about that one. The one thing I will say is the structure of the game can be a bit of a drag for players who want to focus on one individual story at a time.

For example. I started with Olberic, and I wanted to continue his story but the area in which his next chapter takes place has many high leveled enemies that can defeat my party in a few turns. In order to prepare for that, I went and gathered the remaining 7 travelers to increase my level. While the introductory tales of the other travelers are interesting, I had to wait before I continued Olberic's story. Pay close attention to the reccomended level on the map!

All in all, Octopath Traveler may have one or two gripes that can make the experience a bit less pleasant than expected, but its goods greatly outweigh the bads. Octopath allows you to make your own journey and do crazy things, this is truly a fantastic JRPG and I hope to see more turn-based titles in the future. There's also a good amount of post-game content. That's why I'm giving this game a 10/10.

Example: Game has bad graphics for today's standards of games in 2018. --- PLEASE READ: Please do not give this game a 0 rating if you like the music but do not like the game, 0 rating is if you hate absolutely everything in a game, liking the music or something in the game can easily bump it up a point or few, personally the music and exploration makes up 50% of this game I find, so that's an easy 5 points, but everyone's observations are different. Also, using poor/oudated GRAPHICs is a poor reason to automatically give the game a 0, otherwise undertale and all indie games released after 2000 should also receive 0 scores. At least be fair and give more reasons in a review on why you feel it deserves that 0 or 1 score.

The graphics and game art style should not surprise anyone who has seen anything about this game, whether it be a trailer or the demo or pictures/videos on social media or even by looking at the back of the box before purchasing the game. The appeal for this game is for nostalgia sake as a throwback to JRPGs from the 90s and some from the early 2000s. This is no different from praise given to indie games with its 16 bit sprites, like Undertale comes to mind and how well received it was for its simple retro graphics.

With old style graphics, there's an element of charm and something extra special in the art style, especially in the backgrounds and how beautifully designed they are.

As for the complaints of fight after fight after fight, it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. The maps for each zone is a little smaller than your typical RPG, so it's to be expected to have more battles and that's also a nostalgic part of older JRPGs where random encounters frustrating us was always a thing. But the battles have their own big charm in this game and it's quite a unique battle system with certain power and weapon weaknesses to break the foe and then how you can boost to use an attack multiple times for more damage. Something similar to the Bravely games, from the same creators who worked on this game.

I like the whole separate character paths and how you can pick and choose which one you want to start and then travel to each one and explore their story, then the other greater element and mechanic is how each character has their own field ability to interact with the world and NPCs.

I've played the game for 10 hours and I'm onto my fourth character, but just yesterday I spent a while just in one city using the character's abilities on each NPC when I got my extra new character, it made revisiting a town worthwhile to interact with each one and that new character specific field ability. Then of course you have your side quests and levelling/equipment system with everything JRPG fans love, not to mention an amazing soundtrack.

I think for a big JRPG fan like myself, especially a fan of older JRPGs, since I grew up with the SNES and PS1/PS2 JRPGs as a kid and teenager, this type of JRPG even in this day and age is a dream-type of JRPG to be made today. It's well worth the purchase.

Despite his look this game is actually doing something quite particular in it's structure, 8 differents heroes with different destiny, you can pick any, build the team you want, choose when you want to advance in a story, you can go anywhere in the map.

The music is absolutely fantastic, up there with persona and nier easily.
The game is stacked with content, expect 50 hours for the main game, and 80-100 for a completionist run.
The difficulty is perfect in my opinion, hard enough so you actually use strategies, but not too hard so you get frustrated.
The sidequest are very good, basically the npc tells you a problem or something vague and you have to figure it out, there is no specific indication on how to do it, but if you pay attention to dialogue and understand the world you will figure it out! It's much better than all those JRPG with giant Arrow, that tell you to kill 10 birds or something like that.

The only potential negative is the quality of the dialogue which is not always very engaging with all the stories.

The writing and voice acting (when it shows up) is very good. The sound track is really one of the best sound tracks of the year.

And damn, this combat system and character mechanics are so deeply layered and synergistic. This is by far one of the best JRPG battle systems ever. I mean, even 1-on-1 battles at the start of the game are interesting and exciting, and have some strategy to them. How many JRPGs can say that? You're never going to just be pressing A.

The game is also really challenging as well. Octopath Traveler presents us with some of the BEST JRPG boss battles I've played in god knows how long! Even bosses 3-4 hours into the game are seriously epic in size and strategy to defeat them.

And can you believe the game is open-world with tons of exploration and non-linear story progression? And did you know the game is 100 hours long?

Overall, while so many things are the same and polished to a tee, much of the game is very different from JRPGs too, and that's a great thing - it feels modern and not just a remake of the days of yore on your SNES. Yes, the stories of the 8 characters might not tie into a whole, but that's okay - does every RPG have to have the same formula? Octopath Traveler had a vision, and it accomplishes what it set out to do perfectly. It's different, and different is good.

This is easily going to end up somewhere in my top 10 games of the year. The game is awesome. And did I mention the soundtrack was the best this year? Seriously, that alone is a reason to play the game! It's that good!

Absolutely loved the game. It instantly brought me back to the sorrow-free days of my childhood I spent with my beloved Terranigma, Secret of Mana, Zelda, Lufia, etc. without feeling too old-school or boring. It's a bit sad the story (telling) does not change depending of who has joined your party but this nitpicking.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is truly a gem that hearkens back to 90s nostalgia in JRPGs with modern quality of life updates. The sprite art is fantastic, the backgrounds are stunningly beautiful for a game of this type, and most of all, the soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful and emotional. All the characters story lines are very well written, and you begin to feel a connection to them early on as they struggle with their pasts and present, and wanting to better themselves. There is a bit of lack of crossover in the main story lines, but that doesn't affect it too much in my own opinion, since you have free reign on choosing where to go and who to recruit and use in your party.

The gameplay mechanics play much like other turn based JRPGs of the time with a fresh addition to the battle system, which while combined with other parts you discover later in the game, lead to interesting and fun strategies. My only gripe is there is a need for a bit of grind in some areas, but that's to be expected of a JRPG.

    Spoilers ahead;

Once you finish the main game you're able to take on Galdera, a secret boss, after completing a seemingly innocuous side quest involving a seemingly unimportant character. It ties together all the story lines in a very satisfying way, making you think about how many generation it took to set in motion all the events that affected the 8 characters lives.

The presentation was just amazing. They develop “HD-2D” graphics. The landscapes and character design are just unique and refreshing to the eye. You can feel the throwback of old school JRPGs with the updated aesthetic. You’ll just be amaze on how they change and improve the pixel graphics.

The Battle system on the other hand feels familiar with a twist. It still incorporates the turn base system in the past but with the added Boosts system. The player has to choose the timing when to spend the Boosts points so that they can deal “massive damage.” It is a lot of damage when timed correctly. It’s simple concept but refreshing in the same time.

Music was god sent. Composer ,Yasunori Nishiki, created such an incredible sound track. The sound track was probably one of the best sound tracks I’ve ever heard. People should play the game with the music alone. Nishiki reminded me of Nobuo Uematsu when he created the music for Final Fantasy. The music was just timeless and legendary. Please listen to it, you’ll not be disappointed. You can find the whole soundtrack at spotify and youtube.

They story of Octopath individually was great. People can really feel the the trials and tribulation per character and how they face and grew from it. The overall story of as a group needs a little work BUT all was answered with the post game content. I was shock how all of it tied up in the end.

Overall Octopath was such breath of fresh air this generation and it didn’t disappoint. If you’re looking for a JRPG to play just try Octopath.

No fim, as qualidades acabam compensando a experiência.

For those that love the 2D 16 bit RPG's back in the day you are going to be in for a treat. Visuals are stunning. Fantastic soundtrack. It sure is nice to still have some JRPG's that are turned based as that style has gone out of fashion over the years. (Try the demo if you want a sample)

Aunque he jugado grandes juegos como God of War, Detroit become human o Super Smash Bros.

Story- 8 characters in this game that have their own self-contained story. I understand why people dont like that the stories dont come together in one overarching story, but whether that affects your choice in purchasing the game or not is up to you. I understand why people dont like that the stories dont come together in one overarching story, but whether that affects your choice in purchasing the game or not is up to you. For the stories themselves, some are pretty interesting like Cyrus or Therion, while others like Primrose, Olberic and Alfyn are pretty average, "safe" stories. Now though the characters themselves dont really come together, what I really like is how the lore that centers around in each of the stories, help give a much bigger world and connects the stories themselves more than the characters. There's also a secret 9th path, well if u could call it that, that does bring the lore and the 8 paths together a good bit. (Reason for why the 8 character's stories happened and indirectly involved with each other) But on how to find the secret path you will have to find yourself.
    >Graphics- Its what the devs called "2D-HD" which honestly does look great. The pixel art is gorgeous, the 3D models are simple yet effective. The pixel textures do kind of repeat, which honestly is great for nostalgic purposes of the limited memory of 16bit games. Some of the techniques they use in the game is pretty advanced like Bokeh DoF, complex specular maps, water is beautifully animated and have their own reflections, all objects that im aware of interact with the light, the character sprites themselves hav their own real time shadows that interact with light also, the small cloud shadows that move across the scene, alpha effects are pretty high res, etc. All give this game such beauty, it almost gives a sense of it being a living diorama. 720p 30fps Docked and 576p 30fps Handheld, which is understandable tbh with the techniques it uses. Its kinda hard to see the lower res which is great tbh.
    >Music- The music is gorgeous and blends pretty well to feel like a background that honestly makes me feel immersed in the world. It also contains 3 different Battle themes, so you wont grow tired of hearing the same theme throughout the game, like other games do. Some of my favorite themes are from the Woodlands and Frostlands
    >Gameplay- Whichever character you start out with has the combat start out pretty simple with BP (that feels just like Brave in Bravely Default), where you can stack and use these points that can make you hit the enemy multiple times, boost how much health you can heal, boost magic damage or increase how many turns you have a status buff. As you level up and collect other party members, the game auto scales its level requirements in each of the areas for you to traverse in for combat. As you defeat each enemy encounter you get Jp (job points) which you can stock up. You start out with a base job that pertains to the character and these Jp can be used to unlock more skills that pertains to your job. (each unlock will increase the amount of Jp you need for next unlock; 50, 100, 500, etc.) As you unlock more skills of your job, you unlock Support skills which can be used in combination with any other support skill unlocks from other 2ndary jobs. (can equip up to 4) There's a total of 12 jobs in this game, 8 of them are the ones that pertain to each character (Dancer, Apothecary, Warrior, Merchant, Scholar, Thief, Hunter and Cleric) but their are also 4 secret jobs that are technically like a fusion between 2 jobs in the pool of 8. They can only be obtained by going through their dungeons which require to be very high level'd. (Starseer, Runelord, Warmaster, Sorcerer) Unlike obtaining the other 8 jobs by simply finding their cave, and walk up to it and grab it. Game requires deep strategy the farther you get in. When to correctly time your use of BP and amount, which characters to give ur BP, who to buff, etc. The game constantly keeps you engaged. I've had a few team wipes caused by one **** up in my choices. The game is very grindy also. Their are also Path Actions that are unique to each character....well technically 4 different ones where each one is shared between 2 characters with small variations.(Purchase/Steal, Challenge/Provoke, Scrutinize/Inquire, Allure/Guide) These do have some relevance in need to be used for the stories.
    >>In conclusion, this is a beautiful game with great music and gameplay. I haven't played many classic 16bit JRPGs but this is definitely a game I do recommend to people who love nostalgia, a good challenge or just like playing retro games. (and also dont mind the grind it requires, or a more or less average overall story)
    >>Rating: 8.7/10
Update: Beaten the True Final Boss in Octopath. It was a 2 phase fight and made u use all 8 of ur party members. But man its one of those games where the Final boss actually requires skill/strategy to defeat instead of just grinding away in levels. (levels only give increment boost) Now THIS is wht a Final Boss/Super Boss shuld b like. Very few Jrpgs actually make it a challenge nowadays tht require skill.

This game is a masterpiece. It is without a doubt the best game on the Nintendo Switch at the moment, and the second best game of the year (trailing only God of War). This should be a console seller. You don't even have to be an old school RPG fan to appreciate what this game does.

Technicality: graphic is OK, but not stunning, rather don't play on big TV, music is perfect and nice for your ears, haven't seen bugs or glitches.
    Play-ability:
Story is fine but not epic, characters are fine but I do not feel the bound with any, skills system is very good, a lot of items on a market to buy, sell, find... Fight is perfect - very good and interesting system coming from @Bravely Default@ game......and..... this is it: "Bravely default" on 3DS is first game which I could think about when i am thinking about Octopath. Unfortunately for Octopath, Bravely Default was much more interesting for me (better story, better characters, same good fight)

If you have 3DS and have not played in Bravely Default (9/10), but thinking about getting Octopath, its fine, but you will be more happy with this nice 3DS.
If you want some JRPG but preffer to have more action go for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (10/10 for me).

Octopath Traveler is still very strong title and a very good game (8/10 on my personal score board ;-))

While each character’s story doesn’t intersect, they are interesting enough to entertain. Unlocking secondary jobs adds enough customization to keep things interesting as you can mix and match Support Skills to make some powerful characters. Despite not being Final Fantasy in name, it is a better than more recent entries in the series.

Any fan of the RPG, especially JRPG, genre needs to play this game. The music, art style, and combat are all excellent. This game might feature the best turn-based combat I've ever played. The individual stories range from okay to captivating, but stellar voice acting makes even the less interesting stories worth going through.

Octopath Traveler is a return to those "good ole days" of gaming. When presented with an idea to tackle eight stories in one game, Octopath rises to the occasion and succeeds in many ways. This is a must-buy for JRPG fans!

While those looking for a deep, story-heavy RPG might find Octopath Traveler lacking, the game is a hugely enjoyable modern take on traditional turn-based games of yesteryear with a collection of short story, rather than novel-length, narratives. The graphics represent the pinnacle of pixel art and the score is amazing. This game was pretty much a system-seller for me and well worth every penny and hour spent with it.

You can either hate Octopath Traveler’s art direction or love it, but it definitely will not leave you indifferent. Distinct visuals are just one of the game’s many strengths which make it a feast for the fans of jRPGs – and much more than that. It’s not flawless though – the dungeons are bland and there are virtually no relations between the characters in your party as they don’t communicate almost at all. [09/2018, p.66]

Octopath Traveler is unapologetically old-school, and would not have been out of place if it had released back in the golden age of JRPGs.
