What a beautiful and subtle game this is. Music and artistry are masterful done.

Its not without some room for improvement though, the ties that bind the 8 characters together require a lot of digging, and while you can get to the credits without exploring deeper into the world's lore I urge anyone to pursue the "optional" super boss, which neatly wraps the adventure together.

Fortunately, I almost didn't grind in this game, though I admit you are kinda forced to do that in Octopath Traveler. I personally did not think that that was a problem as I really liked the fighting system.

Doing this, while compelling at first, creates repetitive and formulated game-play and does not let the characters create deep bonds with each other. That sheer ambition is all the more impressive because Octopath Traveller uses sprites. Little 2D characters made up of even littler squares. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OCTOPATH TRAVELER is the definitive example of the tried-and-true JRPG genre on the Nintendo Switch that provides a thrilling, yet beautiful storytelling experience to both veterans of said genre and new players willing to immerse themselves in the continent of Osterra that seamlessly builds itself up no matter where you are. It divides the compelling journey of eight protagonists, each with their own ambitions and goals they will inevitably meet, into four chapters with a total of 32. Regardless of the character that you choose first, each will initiate at a relatively simple beginning which cements the rudimentary premise of the plot with a cut-scene. This laid-back, peaceful start marking the beginning of each adventure is reminiscent of classic RPG's that began on an easeful note. It subsequently transitions into a more heated, adrenaline-fueled narrative once the player is engaged in their individual stories, pacing the game well.

Any and every JRPG is not complete without a unique battle system, and OCTOPATH TRAVELER successfully manages to toss in nostalgia and innovation into a cauldron brewing a stylish potion of gameplay that sources elements from its spiritual predecessors (BRAVELY DEFAULT). Aside from the typical command inputs (Attack, Defend, Flee, Items, etc.), the battle system utilizes a mechanic known as 'Battle Points' (abbreviated in-game to BP) which can speed up the progress of your fight whilst potentially turning the tides in your favor. Up to 5 BP can be stored per character, which on a side note only four can be present at one time - reflecting the party formula of the game's RPG ancestors, and can be accumulated every turn unless the enemy casts a spell that temporarily prevents you from earning such. The combat itself is a breathtaking sight to conceive - in which small sprites of your characters perform devastating attacks with the use of CGI and special effects that emphasize the severity of your blows or spells without overdoing it entirely. What compensates for the rather tedious grinding aspect of the game is the 'thrill of the fight', as Olberic tends to assert. Each protagonist bears skills unique to them (with the exception of secondary jobs) which allows you to devise a strategy based on which character you have chosen to accompany your primary protagonist. Would you have a Cleric (Healer; Ophilia) and a fast attacker dishing out blows to gain SP (Thief; Therion) for the party as part of a defensive tactic or favor the opposite and have characters such as Olberic and Cyrus dealing as much damage as they can before they are eliminated? OCTOPATH TRAVELER integrates a strategic component into the gameplay that intensifies the battle, particularly when facing bosses and powerful overworld enemies with a higher level cap. The difficulty of the game is dependent on your commitment to your protagonists; would your rather finish the game thoroughly by gaining enough experience to withstand any challenge thrown at you (either in the main game, through secret bosses or end-game content) or skim through it quickly at the risk of Game Overs? In short, grinding = easier gameplay whilst the opposite provides a more challenging experience.

What is arguably one of the, if not the most important aspect of any given JRPG is the story that accompanies them. Even OCTOPATH TRAVELER advocated this particular aspect as its main selling point, which should raise the expectations of many wanting to dig their noses into a 50-hour+ campaign, right? On more negative grounds, what every other user below and above seem to be clamoring about is the flawed execution of the story (not necessarily the story itself; those are great and, at times, tear-welling). To my honest dismay, they aren't wrong. The eight paths that you can decide whether to walk upon or not with Ophilia, Cyrus, Tressa, Olberic, Primrose, Alfyn, Therion and H'aanit are all parallel to each other and does not incorporate an overarching plot justifying the reasons for the characters forming a band in the first place. There are, in contrast, heaps of informative texts correlating each story to another, albeit this is only prevalent at the end of the game, but it requires you to piece together the overarching story of Graham Crossford, the man who attributes to the start of almost every journey. The execution of said story is also formulaic, with a routine designated to visit a given town, activate your Field Skills and engage the allocated boss repeating itself every chapter. This does tend to get progressively off-putting for completionists, unless you can tolerate every other aspect of OCTOPATH TRAVELER to forgive this flaw.

In conclusion, OCTOPATH TRAVELER is certainly a remarkable experience for both new players and veterans of the undying JRPG genre, only held back from perfection by its storytelling flaws. Nonthless, it is a must-have for any copy of the Nintendo Switch.

There is no real final boss you have to beat to finish the story. The individual character bosses also seem to ignore the whole party during story sections. Like, when a character's boss kidnaps you, they act like they only kindap that character, when the whole party of a super wizard, and a legendary knight is actually with her in the room. Those story lapses kinda break immersion for me. That doesn't mean the game is bad. But it could have been perfect it they addressed that.

So, what video games did I have, which I didn't finish yet, to play between December 2019 and January 2020? Pokemon Sword, the second route of Fire Emblem Three Houses and Final Fantasy 4 on the ioS. So basically, three RPGs. The last two RPGs I've said about, I've made really slow progress on them.
But when I remember Octopath Traveler existed, (last I've heard about Octopath Traveler was from one Nintendo Direct and more than a couple of Youtube thumbnails) I've looked at some of the trailers and played the 3-hour demo... And I was amazed by the 3-hour experience I had with the Octopath Traveler demo and so, I've bought the game! This experience, which took me at least 85-hours to finish, was a great one and so it's time to review OCTOPATH Traveler!
Also, today's my birthday! P.S. MY FOCUS IS UNPARALLELED!!!

You play as one of the eight travelers and make him/her your protagonist (I chose Cyrus), you start to embark on your protagonist's journey, and recruit the other seven travelers and progress their stories as well. Some traveler's stories (in many chapters) are really deep, dark, captivating or engaging, while other stories (in some chapters) are kinda lackluster and not really engaging. But the overall story is really engaging itself and there is an optional extended post-game story with a truly difficult final boss battle (let me remind you again that this is optional).
The gameplay is really creative, in which you have to break your enemies' weaknesses, and each traveler has their own jobs, in which they have their own abilities, attacks, and support skills. There are secondary jobs, in which they're your traveler's jobs and four secret jobs/classes but you'll probably need a guide for the secondary jobs and the four secret jobs/classes.
The visuals are absolutely outstanding and it definitely recaptures the 16-bit JRPGs. Seriously, you might want to stop playing the game to just look at the surroundings. The characters' and bosses' sprites have so much detail put into them, and they just look great!
The music is very amazingly orchestrated. But when it comes to the music in battles and boss-battles, it's really mindblowing! You should really appreciate the musicians and people who went for all of that effort in making Octopath Traveler's outstanding music. You should watch this Youtube video, "How Octopath Traveler Hypes its Boss Battles", as it explains the music of Octopath Traveler and the transitions from this music piece to this boss battle theme.
When it comes to the side-stories (side-quests), lots of the side-stories don't really tell you (or at all) of what to do in the side-stories. You'll really need a guide for the side-stories. And it doesn't really help that the optional extended post-game story is locked behind at least six side-stories. Yup, you'll really need a guide for this.
The cast of characters is genuinely likable and unique, and the voice-acting is from well-done to extremely brilliant and talented. (I might be somewhat exaggerating)
The difficulty is truly quite tough, it really depends on what level your team is. On the map (of where it tells you where the traveler's next location is), it shows the traveler's next destination (in the next chapter) for their respective story, and it also shows what is the recommended level for the next chapter. I definitely recommend leveling your team (so basically grinding) around the recommended level. If the boss is too hard for you, either go to another's traveler's chapter or grind your team a few more levels. For really difficult boss battles, you'll need to understand the jobs' (and secret jobs') abilities, skills and support skills. So basically, for a difficult boss battle, you'll need to know what you're doing in the boss battle and to have a good (and solid) plan. It takes a lot of strategy and logical thinking to win a difficult boss battle. For the optional secret post-game story final boss, it takes massive amounts of strategy and critical thinking to win that boss battle, so GOOD LUCK!
There are multiple flaws within this game, from how broken the gameplay is (like exploiting the secret jobs' abilities), to how grinding works in this game. Seriously, there are a lot of minor and broken flaws in this game.

Octopath Traveler is partially excellent, and one of the greater JRPGs out there and this game will always have a special place in my heart. This game could've been better, but they tried and it worked somewhat perfectly well! From outstanding visuals to great voice-acting, how could you hate this game? (Well, there's the flaws...) Well, I really recommend trying out the Octopath Traveler demo for yourselves, and then you can decide whether to buy this game or not.
The score for Octopath Traveler is... 9.2! (9)

This game is really fun and I spent so much time battling and roaming the surprisingly expansive world. The graphics are gorgeous and its a steal if the story wasn't terrible. I'm not that much of a critic but this story just had me pressing the skip button every single time. Other than that its worth it!

Very nice graphics, great experience. The reason I come to this game is because it has a really good soundtracks (one of the reasons I play JRPGs). The downside is that the plot of each character has no relationship and interaction between the characters, but for me, the story is temporary. I still give 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Octopath Traveler was overall a wonderful adventure, a real travel through a wonderful artistic design and accompanied by an equally wonderful OST.

Where to start ? Let me first say it took me 165 hours to finish the game 100%, and to be honest, my opinion on the game varied quite a lot along all these hours. In the first few hours, you select your first character, discover the graphical style of the game and the gameplay with a lot of pleasure. Artistically, and although a bit more efforts could have been done on some sprites, the game just looks beautiful. It's a pleasure to go through the wide variety of landscapes. The turn-based combats are simple but offer their dose of complexity when you start fighting stronger bosses.
After a few hours, once you have unlocked a few more characters, this is where you can start analyzing this game more closely, and unfortunately see the few flaws of Octopath Traveler. Story is a core element of the game with an overwhelming amount of dialogues and, as I will repeat later, the end of the story completely justify spending so much time going through the game. But honestly, some characters have much more interesting lore and stories than others. Without spoiling, the background story of Alfyn, for example, does not seem to be leading anywhere and have any structure, and even the bit of suspense that is created is solved by a scenaristic shortcut. In contrast, the stories of Olberic and Primrose are much more interesting. This creates, in the early/mid-game, an asymmetry in the expectations from each storyline.
The second core problem of Octopath Traveler, which I must say got me quite bored when I reached about 50/60 hours of play, is that the structure of almost the chapters in the game (except a few ones) is exactly the same: you arrive in town with an intrigue ongoing, you progress through a few dialogues giving the context, you go a little further using the special talent of your character, and this leads you to a dungeon. Dungeons are also all the same in their structure: an open area where foes spawn randomly, and a few chests to open, until you reach the boss of the chapter. Once the boss is defeated, the chapter concludes with another few dialogues, setting up the stage for the next chapter. You can explore the vast world and find secret areas, but these will also always have the same structure, so much that after some time you can start predicting where to find secret bonuses/solutions to secondary quests without thinking too much.

If you are a player in the middle of the game, I would however suggest to keep going. Why ? Because weirdly enough, for me the real fun started after about 100 hours of play. Some stories keep being uninteresting, but some are concluded very nicely, although none of them has a very surprising ending. But after all 8 storylines are finished, the game is actually not completely finished... and I don't want to spoil from there on, but this is when you start to explore more, discover improvements to your fighting skills, and with perseverance you can reach the real end of the game... I can't say much about it, but let me just say that even a completely boring storyline like Alfyn's is somehow rehabilitated by the glorious ending. It was crazy how the end of the game completely changed my way of seeing the game, and even made me want to play it over once more.

To complement this review, I must insist and say again that the OST is just divine... The musics keep playing in my head every day since I finished the game. Most of them give a feeling of melancholy, harmony or peace. Some relax you, some give a sad or epic background to the story. A brilliant and poetic piece of art.

Octopath Traveler says its name: it's a real travel through thousands of beautiful landscapes, stories that stutter a little in midgame but come all together in a glorious ending, a simple but efficient turn-based gameplay, all of this glorified by amazing OST. A game that I will not forget.

Despite not being a big fan of this retro artistic section, I must admit, it is impressive in this one. The game is outstanding in the playable section in its turn-based combat and has an incredible soundtrack. To put something down, I think the game is short on end-game content. But definitely recommended.

Awesome rpg, really impressed me. Feels right at home on the switch. The graphics are amazing and very stylized. The characters are fun relatable and memorable. I would recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy rpgs and awesome medieval soundtracks they can listen to outside gameplay. Very good game yes very good.

I love this game! The turn based battle system is perfection. The boost system is really fun and I enjoyed the depth and strategy required to defeat each unique boss battle. It was a pleasure to discover each characters storyline and the music was fantastic.

Octopath Traveler is a must buy for any fan of classic JRPGs. The art style and music are phenomenal, some of the best you'll find in any JRPG. Octopath's combat system is a refined and improved version of the one in Bravely Default, which was already a solid combat system. It is deep enough and pretty enjoyable, especially in boss fights (although boss fights can be pretty long). WhileOctopath Traveler is a must buy for any fan of classic JRPGs. Octopath's combat system is a refined and improved version of the one in Bravely Default, which was already a solid combat system. It is deep enough and pretty enjoyable, especially in boss fights (although boss fights can be pretty long). While battling normal enemies can get tedious and a little boring after awhile, the break system and large variety of enemies helps to keep things interesting. Extra grinding hardly ever feels necessary. As long as you have four party members and do each of their chapters (for example, complete four chapter 2's before moving onto any chapter 3's), then you should be around the recommended level for any dungeon/boss you'll face. The secondary job mechanic is also well executed, providing a significant amount of versatility for how you want to design your party, in addition to which of the eight characters you choose to include.

The main knock most people have on Octopath is the story, which I can understand. Considering how much freedom they give you in terms of choosing which order to pick up the characters (or whether you want to grab some of them at all) and which order to the story chapters in, it's not surprising that sacrifices had to be made in how connected each character's story is to the other characters. Each character arc is distinctly separate from each of the other characters, but that doesn't mean the individual stories are bad. Some of the are a bit generic, but they are well-written and interesting enough. I especially enjoyed H'aanit's story. While I did enjoy the story, you definitely play this game for the art, music, and combat, not for the story.

Overall, this is one of the best and most enjoyable JRPGs I have played. If you're a fan of JRPGs and haven't played this yet, you'll doing yourself a disservice. If you've never played a JRPG before, this is a good place to start to get a taste of what the genre has to offer, but keep in mind that there are JRPGs that can play pretty differently than this one (more focus on story/character growth, action-based combat instead of turn-based, no random encounters, etc.). If you have never been a fan of JRPGs, Octopath Traveler is unlikely to change your mind.

If you enjoyed SNES era JRPGS then this is a must play. I don't recall the last time I had this much fun playing a 16 bit style game. My only complaint is the mid game grind. It's tedious.

The only thing keeping this game from being a 10 for me is the fact that the stories don't intertwine aside from small dialog after completing a chapter. Old schooled J-RPG created in a different way. 8 characters have their own story and merged into together in the end.

Pro: Good music, dated but still good battle system, the things you like about JRPG, etc Con: It's a bit too much to start 8 different stories and you kinda know they are going to be short and there will always be a boss in the end. Glad they divided them into two

While those looking for a deep, story-heavy RPG might find Octopath Traveler lacking, the game is a hugely enjoyable modern take on traditional turn-based games of yesteryear with a collection of short story, rather than novel-length, narratives. The graphics represent the pinnacle of pixel art and the score is amazing. This game was pretty much a system-seller for me and well worth every penny and hour spent with it.

You can either hate Octopath Traveler’s art direction or love it, but it definitely will not leave you indifferent. Distinct visuals are just one of the game’s many strengths which make it a feast for the fans of jRPGs – and much more than that. It’s not flawless though – the dungeons are bland and there are virtually no relations between the characters in your party as they don’t communicate almost at all. [09/2018, p.66]

Octopath Traveler is unapologetically old-school, and would not have been out of place if it had released back in the golden age of JRPGs.
