Best game on switch and on any system right now. You get that feeling of playing an old school rpg but one made for modern times. Everything is just good the music the combat and the eight stories. So far this is the game of the year in 2018.

This is just for Tressa's story alone. It. Is. Fantastic. And already made the game worth buying, the music, combat, art, Tressa herself is just adorable and relatable, its just all wonderful and im excited to try the rest.

it is a game for a 10, I have already 11 hours playing and there is too much to do. Some of the histories are deep other not too much. The fighting systems is great and you need to play with strategy. The graphics don't bother me, but it could be better in big TVs. The music is one of the best aspects and also the art details in each town, make everything alive.

This game is so beautiful... Unfortunately a lot of people disagree for stupid reasons... And should be banned from the site ... They are only either mad it's not on PS4 because they don't have a Nintendo switch or they are really dumb through head to toe. Personally I'm glad that I purchased the game I love it and I'm never gonna sell it

Beautiful art, great music, each character having unique abilities give you a lot of variables to think on and having jobs expands this in a lot of ways. 50 hours of gameplay went by and didn't even felt it. Great game, just go play it.

Expand

Note that I have 100h into this game right now, so I can review it. This is on my list of all times favorite RPGs. This game is marvelous in numerous ways that I`ll talk about. I have no idea how someone can give a negative review of it. I played so many JRPG in my lifetime that I have a gigantic list to compare this game too. In a nutshell, Octopath Traveler is JRPG at its finest.
    - Just badass graphics. This game is made in the Unreal Engine and it just an eye feast;
    - Good characters. I can see how unique they are. The English voice actors are also pretty good;
    - Awesome individual stories, but you will see some problems here because the 8 stories do not truly connect. However, this does not cast any shadows in the whole experience. Actually, some people think this is bad, I don't. Here is why: This is one of the things that make Octopath unique. We are so used to see the "group of people that join forces to save the world" that we think it HAS to happen. It doesn't. You follow their individual stories and they are satisfying as a converging one;
    - Marvelous soundtrack. The soundtrack is perfectly chosen for each moment and it just carries you with all scenes;
    - Fun, addictive, awesome and perfect turn-based combat. If you played Bravely Default, you will see some similarities with some aspects of the combat. It is fast, but not too fast, it's beautiful, and each class is unique and badass.
    - Some people say that the characters do not interact: lies. They do interact a lot, but you need to trigger the conversation with the + button. Their dialogs are pretty good for this type of JRPG also.

I truly have no complaints about this game. The individual stories are awesome and way more interesting that they look like when you start them. They have a proportional number of plot twists and they are filled with philosophical questions and good character motivations. They are emotional and exciting to finish. Whoever reads this, if you are a fan of JRPGs, or turn-based RPG, or phantasy games, this HAS to be on your list of games.

It also felt more meandering at the beginning as well and combat was a little longer than I wanted it to be, and I felt a lack of coverage.

All these things kinda changed upon completing the game. I think overall it took me about 90-95 hours to complete the whole thing. The characters are great. The combat improved substantially upon unlocking secondary jobs, which allowed more coverage and made fights feel more even. And obviously this is one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played. Graphically it is phenomenal and I feel it will age very well in that regard.

If I had one gripe, it would be the connectivity of the stories. Yeah, taking on the optional final boss does give a little insight into how they’re connected but it is still kind of a stretch, and still is only optional. Each of the stories are good, but it’s really hard to believe that a whole party is working together in them. You fight with them but no character ever really bleeds over into another’s story. I found this to be mildly disappointing but overall didn’t change my views of the game majorly, it just is what kept it from a 10 in my book.

Other than that I can say it is one of the best games I’ve ever played, in most other aspects. The character customization is deep, the combat is more like a complex puzzle, the stories are interesting and have depth, but wrap up just before overstaying their welcome. And the world is quite big despite being linear. I feel the game is worth it’s price tag for sure. Just wish we’d have more character interaction.

If you’re feeling like it’s a bit of a drag at the beginning, just stick with it. The first 10 hours are the hardest to get through, but after that it is such a joy to play. Loved how long it actually is. Felt I got my money’s worth

I have now completed this game (all 8 character chapters) and am compelled to write a review. I don't play many RPGs often, mostly since I don't have the time, but also because I find many RPGs to be too repetitive or bogged down with lots of chaff.

I really enjoyed Octopath Traveler, it's incredible.

    PROS:

    - The gameplay is in general outstanding.

    - The combat system is great and adds some interesting strategy. Battles are often engaging, there are real decisions to make involving when to use BP, whether to cast status effects, or when to use Steal or Collect commands.

    - Outfitting the party is a lot of fun, choosing which characters, equipment, jobs and skills to use to create a balanced or focused mix. There are a lot of choices to make, but there are only 10 or so stats that can be affected. The process was always fun, and never felt "fiddly" or confusing.

    - The graphics are fantastic, the world map, character art, diverse monsters, backgrounds, boss art, dynamic atmosphere effects, etc, etc are all completely awesome, it's a gorgeous game.

    - The voice acting is good to great. I've heard some bad voice acting in the past and thought that this voice acting was fine. The key problem in general with voice acting is when it takes you out of the experience because it's bad or over the top, but that happened very rarely for me with this game. There is quite a lot of voice acting in this game and I'm glad they have it in there, it really does add a lot to the experience.

    - The music is exceptional and there is a lot of it, I didn't really get bored of the battle music. There are multiple boss and battle musics so that helps.

    - The stories are good to great. Each character has 4 chapters (Which each take 1-2 hours each). In each you have to travel to a town on the overworld, advance the story in each town, go through a dungeon level, and defeat a boss. Each of these 4 steps can take 15-30 minutes. It's a bit formulaic, but each chapter feels a lot different than the last, as each character advances on their journey. Most of the chapter stories are quite engaging, and there are only a couple that I thought were a bit odd, or somewhat unresolved. I personally love the "16-bit theater" which is a bit exaggerated, and I thought the writing was really good.

    CONS:

[Edit: I have played beyond the 8 main stories and completed more side quests, and as a result I need to remove some of the Cons from the list!]

    - The side quests have issues. It's too easy to complete some of the NPC side quests inadvertently without reading any of the dialog. I often complete them unintentionally without knowing it. Side quests should require some kind of purposeful action by the player. Other side quests are extremely ambiguous, sometimes you have to travel to a certain person in a specific town, but there are 24 towns! I didn't know I'd have to be taking notes on every NPC in every town so I'd know which of the hundreds of villagers to talk to for a given situation. There needs to be better hints than what is recorded in each Journal entry.

    - I actually didn't have to grind for the entire main game, which was fine, but it meant that I was a little overpowered for the entire 2nd half of the game, it wasn't a big deal, but I was looking for a little more challenge towards the end.

    - More meaningful inter-character interactions would have been good.

Not much else to say, I really enjoyed the whole experience, it took about 90 hours or so and I still have a bunch of post-game side quest dungeons to explore.

A lot of people complained that this game was repetitive, but I would disagree. Each boss brings in a mechanic, and the towns are all unique.

Elijes tu tu propio camino. Perfecto.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is fantastic, in almost every regard. There are periods of grind, which you can expect from turn based RPGs, but that has always been my bag - so take into account your personal preferences here. The battle system starts off relatively simple and straight-forward, however the game becomes more elaborate as the enemy parties have varied and mixed up vulnerabilities and attack patterns - that you will be putting more thought into how you use your BP more and more as your reach later chapters. Which gets me to the story.

The individual stories are very interesting, as are the characters you enlist and follow along with. Now - while that is true, this leads me to the one (and probably only) main issue I have with the game. The characters rarely interact with one another. Loose ties until later in the game, which seems odd in the early chapters. Just a band of strangers helping each other out or something? But it gets better - I promise (maybe a mild spoiler, I guess).

Additionally, I have to comment on the fact that the Voice acting is standout excellent - an A+ effort for the western release, wish this much effort was put into all VA for Japanese imports. It must be lauded.

Seems like Square Enix is convinced that graphics and contstant action are the only way to go which has completely ruined the Final Fantasy series for me as it just turns out to be a terrible action game labeled as a Final Fantasy. There are only two complaints I have about this game. The first problem is that all the weapon sprites look exactly the same and this really bothers me for some reason but not a big issue for most people. The second problem is that the characters really have no interaction between them for most of the game. Its like they just travel together for no reason and ignore the fact that others exist when going through their stories. Other than that, I am loving the fact that I get a new turn based RPG instead of having to replay old PS1 and PS2 games to get a great RPG playthrough. Well done and I hope this sparks the return of turn based combat that never really needed to go in the first place. Expand

Combat is fun, and works in a good balance but some of the Travelers are less useful in combat than others, for example Primrose thus far hasn't had much of a use in combat in the end, while Cyrus is a must for his passive ability to find weaknesses of the enemies you encounter in your travels. Big point in combat is to break the enemies guard to prevent them from attacking and getting more damage from your attacks, personally I see this as a double-edged sword for example you have bad luck and have none of correct attack styles with you the battle will be drawn out and dangerous.

And as everyone has already said the game looks absolutely beautiful, the light, water, trees everything is beautifully made and crafted with love and care, even normally dull areas are worth seeing.

But this is a must for a JRPG fan to play, maybe even regular RPG fan, but outside of that, if you don't like grinding and other busy work in games this isn't for you so if you buy this game when you don't like to grind or like RPG's in general don't be surprised when you feel like you wasted your money and don't give a game 0 points because you didn't like 1 aspect of the game.

    *EDIT
Now I have spent little over 50 hours which is quite a bit for a working person, I'm nearly done with the games main stuff, got all the side jobs and started finishing stories of the characters, while I do believe that the game can be finished faster due to the reason of my bad habit for over level.
While the stories can be a hit or miss none the less it has been good enough, and while as EVERYONE has cried the characters don't truly influence each others stories this was never the aim, and the chats that they had gave me a few laughs every once awhile (most of my favorites had been between Primrose and Tressa)
And Primrose became much more usable later on to get some of the advanced jobs, and even more powerful after using one of the advanced jobs with her.
But in the end I think 8/10 is a good rating and leave it as that, has been worth the money I have spent unlike a lot of the recent games that give barely 10 hours of gameplay.

Take into account that this is a first review of my experience so far. I am likely going to edit this review down the line once I sink more time into the game.

    Gameplay
Overall the game feels very good for an RPG. The turn based battles feel fun for someone who is used to the JRPS tropes. The addition of weaknesses gives the game a good flare and the bosses for each characters main story feel challenging enough that they ask a little more of you without being too challenging that you want to throw your controller to the floor (you do use quite a lot of healing against these bosses and it does enough to push you). The classes, however, have their own independent skills that they can use in he overworld which is a nice touch and does make each character feel unique outside of battle, which is a welcome change. Overall, the gameplay feels like a general JRPG but it also does a little to change things up and JRPG fans should feel right at home with this kind of game.

    Graphics
The graphics are done in a bit art style on a 2.5D plane. For me personally, the graphics are actually very appealing. The colour pallete looks very accentuated and well drawn, the sprites look interesting and also surprisingly detailed too considering the art style. Overall, I feel that the graphics are actually very well done and are very true to the JRPG roots that the game is drawing from (considering their hayday was in the 16 bit generation). When this is taken into consideration, I do think that the game very lovingly recreates a style that the game devs likely feel really influenced them. It seems clear to see the devs really enjoyed this type of game and so took their passion for this type of game and translated it as best they could.

    Sound:
The OST is a must for this game. There are some excellent soundtracks for this game and the game beautifully represents each unique area with its own soundtrack, which almost foreshadows what is to be expected from this area. Additionally, the game does very well at making actions and attacks feel punchy and weighty, which can be very helpful as the game can put you into a lot of battles.

    Story:
This is likely where the game somewhat seems to fall for me. You begin by choosing your first character and beginning the story of that character, you then meet more people and start to slowly uncover more of their story. My main problem with this is that so far the stories just do not feel like they are put together, the stories of each individual character just feels like it is not interlinked with the other stories, however, perhaps this is one of those things that requires more play time so that I can see the overarching story and I will likely edit the review once I finish the game. The main downside for me on this independent story approach is that each story will likely be its own independent piece. This does mean that not all stories will be interesting and some stories will just be more worth the playthrough compared to others which can be annoying.

Overall, the game is what you would expect from a JRPG and it does enough to make itself feel independent while not being called a game that just apes the JRPG genre. The story right now is the main sticking point for me but it will likely be more combined as time goes on.

Alfyn's story in particular was a snoozefest for me while Primroses had me all emotional. The mechanics are solid and deliver a great turn based rpg. The progression is pretty fun, but I would have prefered if it were deeper. If each job had split off into two advanced jobs and you had to choose which one to advance to, that would have been great. Not only would have their been more jobs, as I finished the game long not needing jp, but it would have deeper customization options. The dancer could advance to either assassin or necromancer (physical burst damage or dark magic). There also could have been a better end game. As it is, I think *slight spoiler* there is just one dungeon. A whole post game main quest chain would have really let you make use of *slight spoiler* those 4 jobs you can unlock.

It's incredibly fun, addictive and there are hours and hours of content to explore, depending on how much of the game you decide to check. It's an almost perfect JRPG.

My only complain would be that the story feels a bit weak, since there is never a "sense of urgency" or a global issue to be addressed. You are just checking what 8 people decide to do with their lives. There is no mission, apart from the dozens of sidequests and individual chapters for you to investigate.

But I don't even want to say this is a "bad" thing about the game. It's just a different approach. This is an almost perfect game and that would alone justify the purchase of a Switch.

Octopath traveller is unusual in that it sheds the typical large overarching narrative in order to tell 8 isolated and simpler but still endearing stories. While your 8 party members work together in combat their stories are their own with a few overlapping plot points that come together at the end. The lack of inter-character interaction is lessened by skit scenes but it still seems strange to be playing a party that doesn't interact like a party, that being said the quality on show here more than offsets this one issue.

The soundtrack is absolutely incredible and one of the best I've heard in a decade. Combat takes what the studio developed with bravely default, slightly reduces the amount of different jobs, but gives us a ton of additional strategy with the break system. The 2D-HD graphics are both nostalgic and technically impressive at the same time. Voice acting is surprisingly on point, although H'annit's mannerisms leave something to be desired. All in all, if you're a turn-based JRPG fan, this is a must buy, and I hope Square-Enix takes note of it's success.

First off I have played this game for 30 hrs at the time of this review and have completed all chapter 2 stories. I am not a huge RPG fan but I've thoroughly enjoyed this game.

    Strengths:

Battle system: The system requires you to be creative and utilize secondary job skills. If you don't have enough skill variety you will have a bad time. I enjoyed the balance between using your Battle Points (BP) (which allow you to either attack more times in a turn or increase the power of the skill you use) and the break system (which is a is defined by the enemies weakness to various skills and requires multiple hits to leave the enemy exposed). You need to learn to combine skills and save your most powerful spells for the right time. This back an forth creates a fun decision making opportunity.

Classes: I really enjoy the classes that are available. The developer did a good job giving certain classes unique talents (elemental attacks or particular weapons). By doing to you need to try out multiple combinations of primary and secondary jobs to get enough coverage for all fights. Additionally all of the classes have their roll. Scholar is an Area of Effect monster with good elemental coverage but when combined with Dancer you gain access to the dagger weapon type, the dark elemental, and buffs for your other characters.

Atmosphere: The music and visuals are really well done and I find myself humming the various theme songs even when I'm not playing. The visuals are made to look "old school" but the lighting, water, and particle effects bring it into the modern world.

    Weaknesses:

Story: The individual stories really vary in terms of quality. I struggled getting through the introductory chapters for some of the characters due to lax pacing and overall disinterest. That being said some other reviews on here mention the lack of interaction between characters as a weakness (I would generally agree), however, they may not have seen the option to press "+" at various times in the story which generates a dialog between the characters that you are traveling with. I haven't completed the game yet, but I can say that I look forward to completing certain chapters more than others.

Overall I haven't found this game to be a grind and have really enjoyed my time with it. I will update this review when I complete the game!

    - The advanced job shrines are great optional challenges and the rewards are amazing
    - Fantasitic soundtrack
    - Using the “Provoke” and “Challenge” skills can lead to some whacky fun
    - Great use of HD rumble and works perfectly in handheld mode
    - Awesome credits sequence that recounts your adventure

    Mixed:
    - “Travel Banter” does a serviceable job showing interactions between characters, but these inorganic interactions tend to make the comradery seem hollow
    - The sidequests are, more often then not, fun to figure out and there are often multiple ways to complete them, but some have very vague descriptors that are near impossible to figure out without some sort of guide
    - Once you get through a wall of obscure side quests, the post game dungeon is a lot of fun and a satisfying final challenge that wraps up the overall narrative very nicely
    - The traveler stories are hit or miss

    Bad:
    - The formulaic nature of every chapter gets stale after a while (Run around town doing errands, fight through a mini dungeon, and defeat a boss) Out of all the chapters, only 3 out of the 32 chapters really step away from this formula
    - Some of the dialects are just straight up horrendous and poorly written (H’annit’s Shakespearean in particular)
    - Having to switch characters into your party just to use their unique abilities in town is pretty tedious. If you don’t have Therion in your party while exploring dungeons, you’ll miss out a ton of good items that are in chests that only he can open.

The game is gorgeous. It is a callback to SNES style of RPG, like FF6, but modernized with shimmering water and snow. The music in this are amazing! Every land has a different sound and gives you a different feel when you go from one place to another. Some stories are weaker than others, like Tressa’s which has become convoluted towards he end. The lack of overarching story for the cast is also a con.
It is one of the best games I played in quite a while. And a Switch exclusive to boot! If you’re a JRPG fan, you should play this. There is a demo on the eShop where the save will transfer if you ever get the game.

This game is not only the reincarnation of all the best things that 16-Bit RPG heavens had to offer but an ETERNAL MASTERPIECE of the video games industry. Anyone alive should play that game as story, graphics, sound and gameplay mechanics are all flawless and so close to perfection, hardly seen in any game! Thank you team Octopath :)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Octopath Traveler is the much anticipated turn-based JRPG that was first announced at the Nintendo Treehouse for the Switch in January 2017. Like many gamers, I grew up playing JRPGs from the Final Fantasy series and longed for the return to traditional turn based 2D combat. Upon seeing the trailer for this game, I was ecstatic to see the revival of the genre I grew up infatuated with.
Octopath Traveler features eight playable characters, each with their own unique abilities and story. Some of these stories, such as that of Olberic, the disgraced warrior that is seeking redemption or Primrose, the woman who’s father was murdered during her childhood and is out for revenge, follow common tropes in RPGs. Other stories like the tale of Cyrus, the scholar with tunnel vision for finding a book of dark arts stolen from the academy library, aren’t as commonly used. In general these stories are well written. They follow a logical progression through four chapters for each character, but the overall story progression jumps around due to the setup of the chapters.
I have three issues I have with the stories. First, the dialogue is often long winded to the point that the talking takes more time than the gameplay. What is interesting is that some of the dialogue is voiced over entirely and some of it only features voices for the first word or two. The second issue I have with the stories is that they are disjointed. Without an excessive amount of level grinding, it is nearly impossible to play the whole story arc for one character straight through. The third issue I have is that each chapter follows a formula; lengthy dialogue session dungeon, boss fight and then finally another lengthy dialogue session. This setup makes the stories somewhat difficult to follow as you have to play through a series of other character’s stories before you can move to the next set of chapters. The lengthy dialogue sessions make the game a little more drawn out than it needed to be. I feel as though less dialogue and a feasible way to follow one character’s story start to finish would have benefited the game.
The combat system in Octopath Traveler has a similar foundation to the systems found in JRPGs of the NES and SNES but with a few enhancements. The enemies in Octopath Traveler all have a shield with a number in it displayed beneath them on the screen. Next to that, there are a series of squares that have a ‘?’ by default, These squares hide the attack types that an enemy is weak to. The number denotes the number of vulnerability attacks the enemy must take before they are dazed through the end of the current round and the following round as well. Once dazed, attacks deal more damage to the enemies. These vulnerabilities are revealed in one of three ways; either by attacking the enemy with the correct weapon or spell type, Cyrus’s ‘Study Foe’ before the first round of combat, or by using the Analyze spell that Cyrus has. Once learned, these vulnerabilities will immediately be revealed the next time you encounter the same enemy.
Another unique combat feature is that every turn the characters build up a battle points. For each battle appoint accrued, characters can either add additional melee attacks or super charge one of their class abilities. This can be very useful in wearing down an enemy’s defense rapidly. Since there are only six melee weapons, and each character only has eight class abilities, there isn’t much variety in attacks that are available. These include H’aanit’s Beast Lore and Alfyn’s concoction ability. I used each one a handful of times and in general didn’t seem very useful. Several other abilities seemed to really serve little point in using. If the ability didn’t result in making an enemy dazed, it didn’t seem like it was useful.
Where Octopath Traveler really shines is in the aesthetics of the game. The sprites used for the characters is in direct homage to 8-bit and 16-bit JRPGs. The landscapes and the background are more graphically robust. The landscapes are in a diorama style, giving the feeling of a 3D environment. As you move your characters through environments, the perspective of the backgrounds change as well. It gives an immersive feeling that gives the landscapes a depth not seen in traditional JRPGs. In the larger towns, you will see something large, such as a cathedral in the background of town as you enter. Then when you go into the next part of town, the cathedral will be in the area in which you can explore. The amalgamation of the 16-bit sprites with the stunning 2D-HD scenery sounds like it would clash. However, it was executed impeccably. In short, the art style is simply brilliant!
This game is well worth playing and makes me look forward to more titles using this engine in the future. Octopath Traveler is a solid 4/5 and worth playing for gamers experienced in JRPGs and newcomers as well.

I’ve never seen anything like it’s “HD-2D” graphics and I personally find them gorgeous, and the music is both excellent and hits the proper mood for the moment it’s played spot-on.

As someone that has gotten easily bored with traditional turn-based RPG battle systems in the past, I find the combat very entertaining and I have yet to get bored of it. I find the job system very clever and I love being able to design and create a party unique from everyone else that’s played the game.

I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about the story, and while it certainly isn’t anything groundbreaking, I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as people make it out to be. I’m personally invested in finding out what happens in each story and I’d call that successful.

Yes, the lack of an overarching plot or any substantial connection between the characters is a little jarring, but I think it was intentional - they wanted to create eight different stories and eight protagonists of equal importance, and I think that they pulled off that balance flawlessly, even if the stories weren’t extremely inspired. While some more character interaction would have been great, I think Square Enix was trying something different, and I applaud the attempt. One thing I liked about the stories is that each one seems to have a different tone - some are lighthearted, some are darker, and some have a real sense of danger and urgency. Even if the stories are a bit cliché at times, they don’t feel monotonous (at least to me).

As far as the few hiccups go - the out-of-combat “Path Actions” were an interesting idea, but honestly they fell a little flat for me. They aren’t tedious, but I don’t find them all that interesting personally. The side quests are a little confusing and almost feel like an afterthought, and I really have no desire to pursue them.

I have hit a few spots where I’ve needed to do some heavy grinding, but overall it hasn’t been horrible. Some of the bosses seem to be a bit stronger than their challenge ratings suggest, and those bosses are frustrating; but most are just challenging, and that’s exactly what I was looking for.

Overall, I definitely recommend picking this game up and giving it a try. I think almost everyone will be able to find something to love about it, whether it be the graphics, the music, the gameplay, or the stories.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Have had 60+ hours on this game. reaching the final part of the game. here is my review:
    Pros
    - Very good gameplay
    - Caters to what JRPG fans have been wanting
    - Individually, storyline is magnificent for each of the 8 travelers
    - Addictive, at least for the initial 30-40hours
    - Great music

    Cons
    - As what some may have mentioned, the storyline tries very hard to interconnect all 8 characters.
however they are only barely connected. Even after doing all the subquests after completion as well as final dungeon (spoiler)
    - difficulty is decent.
    - A little bit of repetitiveness throughout the completion of quests & character storylines.
    - Background blur/graphics can take abit used to.. can sometimes confuse the player as to where to advance.

Hopefully they will improve on the cons of the game. There is room for improvement but this game is one of the best if not the best switch games.

I feel like the game makes a good point of showing you that those are the 3-4 phases you will go through if you have doubts or have lost yourself, or if you just want to become a better version of yourself.
The music is definitely a highlight. I often put some of it on Spotify when I want to transfer myself to another place (Frostlands themes are my favorites). I tried an experiment where I would turn on the characters' songs and try to guess the character and got all of them right! I think this shows (to me at least) how well written and how fitting the music was for the characters themselves.
The game can get a bit grindy, especially if you are trying to beat the final boss. But that's the thing with most RPGs. You can say it's forced, but I don't think so. As I've already mentioned, I think the main theme of the game is personal character growth. This is well conveyed with the story. Even though that was linked to stronger and stronger battles with demons of past and present, I still think that it makes sense that you have to grind - none of the character's motives weren't to become world beaters. They just tried to do what's right for their beliefs.
I don't know the replay value of the game, haven't tried it yet. But I'm sure that at some point I will be replaying this.
Another thing I really liked were how the towns themselves radiated with a specific culture. My favorite (as with the music) was the frostlands. I really liked the idea of a frozen land where most people would be staying at the inn or at their homes near the hearths. The other places are very well done too, and do show some of the problems of medieval days (as well as now sadly).
All in all I think this is a great all rounder. I love this game and it inspired many emotions in me. I'm thankful for that and it got me thinking about whether I need to go on a similar (spiritual, at least) journey to find my real purpose in life.

While those looking for a deep, story-heavy RPG might find Octopath Traveler lacking, the game is a hugely enjoyable modern take on traditional turn-based games of yesteryear with a collection of short story, rather than novel-length, narratives. The graphics represent the pinnacle of pixel art and the score is amazing. This game was pretty much a system-seller for me and well worth every penny and hour spent with it.

You can either hate Octopath Traveler’s art direction or love it, but it definitely will not leave you indifferent. Distinct visuals are just one of the game’s many strengths which make it a feast for the fans of jRPGs – and much more than that. It’s not flawless though – the dungeons are bland and there are virtually no relations between the characters in your party as they don’t communicate almost at all. [09/2018, p.66]

Octopath Traveler is unapologetically old-school, and would not have been out of place if it had released back in the golden age of JRPGs.
