Octopath Traveler on Xbox is a game that expertly marries a traditional JRPG with more modern ideas. It should be immediately obvious that this is the intention with the “HD-2D” visuals, but even after only a short time playing it feels so well-executed.

The best thing about this game is the secret/true ending where all 8 stories are combined and the characters share an ending. The difficulty of the game is enough to challenge you, especially because of the final boss, and you will need to understand each class/profession. Finally, we recommend that you complete all the secondary stories, to unlock the true ending and prepare for the last boss.

A game that when you complete it 100% (all the stories and the true ending) you will love.

The only cons are that sometimes the game is slow and the characters interactions are somehow limited.. like they dont have any influence on the others characters chapter history.. just the battles

I put 100+ hours into the first one and still haven't done everything in the game. The music is the best part of this game for sure, and it's something I hope one day comes to Vinyl to add to my collection. I use the softer music to help me sleep, and the battle themes for other games I play. The characters all have their strengths and weaknesses, yet they are all great overall. Incredible voice acting, great dialogue, and fantastic design make each character and their story feel unique. The world you explore is full of things to do and quests that require you to think rather than following one thing over and over again. The combat itself is fun and satisfying, as there are endless combinations to what you can pull off. The graphics are beautiful, even though sometimes they can be lacking in some areas. It's not perfect, but it's still amazing and beautiful the way it is. There's a lot to do in this game, a lot to discover and find.

If you're not sure if you like this game, I know on Switch there is a 3 hour demo where you play the ACTUAL game rather than a certain mission that's not in the game. It gives you complete freedom for the most part, and it's so much fun you'll want to play more. But now that it's on Game Pass you can try playing it for yourself, and see what you think!

If this game had been released 20 years ago it might have been considered a mild classic next to other Square games. It has an interesting combat system based on pairing characters with sub-jobs, and finding and exploiting weaknesses for enemies.

The challenge of the game is inconsistent. Most of the game past chapter 2 is too easy. Some of the the end-bosses make up for it though by being quite difficult. Also like most JRPGs, the dialogue is overlong, mawkish, and reads like it was written for 12 year-olds. I almost have to deduct a point just for the endless bloviating filled with after-school special moralizing. The characters in this game just won't shut up, and take every opportunity to pontificate with trite dialog.

All-in-all, Octopath Traveler successfully recreates the gameplay of nostalgic titles such as Cronotrigger and Xenogears, but doesn't capture the story-telling that made those games truly great.

Game is a very impressive use of 2D pixel graphics, and have a strong soundtrack and in-depth turn based combat system.

Other than that, the game just feels... by the numbers. Some bits of amusing banter or events, but so much is literally just copy-paste nostalgia from other games that honestly is done better. The game also does poorly at managing the handful of mature themes it attempts to address. The fact that none of the characters are really invested in eachother also hinders the story experience.

8 individual SAME RPGs... not really so much a path but 8 parallel lines that decide to tie-in for literally the "closing" content that felt mostly unnecessary and unrelated.
