I was really beginning to feel bogged down by this game. There was just too much grinding required. In my opinion, there are better JRPGs available. Still, Octopath Traveler was a game I can respect.

    Pros

    Unique, fun battle system
    Great Value
    Beautiful 16 bit graphics
    Great art style

    Cons

    The grind
    Limited interactions
    The story
    The side quests

Frankly, this isn’t a game I would want to play again (after 70 hours of play and exploring just about everywhere). It convinced me that I’m a casual gamer. If I cared to do the many fetch side quests, I could easily sink in another 30 hours. However, I didn’t have much interest in scouring the world doing x to then be able to do y. Reviewing a guide is a must to save the player time from pointless npc interactions searching for the solution of an arbitrary quest. Equipment is more valuable than the character’s level. Late game, it took me hours just to level up my characters five times (and yes, I am fully aware of the fastest farming methods). Even though there are many places to farm with a wide variety of monsters, I found myself going to the same spots to farm, hoping to get the most experience. It didn’t take long for me to memorize every kind of encounter for each area I farmed in.

The story, as well as the characters, are good, but not great. The way the game is structured inhibits any real character development. While trying to get to a high enough level, a player must play the first chapter of eight different characters. In short, you never can just focus on one story; you are forever tied to eight okay stories, instead of focusing on your favorite story. The character conversations were there, and they were needed. However, most of the time, I found myself uninterested in the conversation. The unique character interactions were okay, but they got old fast because it was always, “walk up to an npc, press y, and resolve.” Character classes, over time, seemed to just meld together and lose their individuality. The characters with any individuality are the most popular and are going to be in everyone’s party because their unique passive is irreplaceable.

Gameplaywise, this game is at a 5 or a 6 for me. It was hard to finish. But there are some fantastic aspects about the game. The most well known is its combat system. Players are encouraged to strategize to get “breaks” to really rack up the damage. There is a vast array of weapons, armor, and accessories to choose from. I found myself changing my equipment from time to time to adjust to a big fight. So while the game is an awful grind, at least it was a grind spent in a fun combat system.
The graphics are beautiful. The art style is unique. There are a lot of monsters to fight in Octopath Traveler, and each are charming. The stories, while weak, were enjoyable because they had fun themes associated with them.

In conclusion, this game was worth it for me. In my opinion, it’s a game that’s overrated. The story, the side quests, and the satisfaction from leveling up my characters were lacking. If you don’t mind a heavy grind, and you enjoy the artwork, then this is a solid game to check out. You can easily figure out whether or not you like the game by downloading and playing the demo for free. Believe me, the game doesn’t change up the game mechanics…

The gameplay is also a strength. It is very strategic, with a cool system of ‘Breaks’ that are critical to victory. But, that being said, some bosses will make you tear your hair out, and one boss forces you to use one specific character, so I hope you’ve been leveling him up (I hadn’t been before I got there, not that I’m emotionally scarred or anything, but......still in counseling after what that boss did to me).

However, I have three criticisms: One, that I couldn’t assemble the team I wanted after I started the game and got a feel for how the mechanics of the game worked. To work on a character’s story, you have to have that character in your party, and the characters come in pairs, so it makes the most sense to switch the character out with whoever has the corresponding skills so you aren’t left lacking in a battle or story situation. But, you know what, I’m a boring person, and I just wanted to pick four people and ride them all the way. I docked it a point because I had to keep switching.

Another negative point is that after I beat all the stories, none of them except for one were really remarkable enough to stay with me. The game was beaten and then forgotten, because the stories were fairly standard.

Finally, some of the bosses were really challenging. I do think the level of difficult was a mite too high.

I had gone into this game expecting to rave about it when it was over, but after beating it six months ago, I’ve found I haven’t actually recommended it to anyone. Well, go figure—such is life.

Octopath Traveler is a must buy for any fan of classic JRPGs. The art style and music are phenomenal, some of the best you'll find in any JRPG. Octopath's combat system is a refined and improved version of the one in Bravely Default, which was already a solid combat system. It is deep enough and pretty enjoyable, especially in boss fights (although boss fights can be pretty long). While battling normal enemies can get tedious and a little boring after awhile, the break system and large variety of enemies helps to keep things interesting. Extra grinding hardly ever feels necessary. As long as you have four party members and do each of their chapters (for example, complete four chapter 2's before moving onto any chapter 3's), then you should be around the recommended level for any dungeon/boss you'll face. The secondary job mechanic is also well executed, providing a significant amount of versatility for how you want to design your party, in addition to which of the eight characters you choose to include.

The main knock most people have on Octopath is the story, which I can understand. Considering how much freedom they give you in terms of choosing which order to pick up the characters (or whether you want to grab some of them at all) and which order to the story chapters in, it's not surprising that sacrifices had to be made in how connected each character's story is to the other characters. Each character arc is distinctly separate from each of the other characters, but that doesn't mean the individual stories are bad. Some of the are a bit generic, but they are well-written and interesting enough. I especially enjoyed H'aanit's story. While I did enjoy the story, you definitely play this game for the art, music, and combat, not for the story.

Overall, this is one of the best and most enjoyable JRPGs I have played. If you're a fan of JRPGs and haven't played this yet, you'll doing yourself a disservice. If you've never played a JRPG before, this is a good place to start to get a taste of what the genre has to offer, but keep in mind that there are JRPGs that can play pretty differently than this one (more focus on story/character growth, action-based combat instead of turn-based, no random encounters, etc.). If you have never been a fan of JRPGs, Octopath Traveler is unlikely to change your mind.

This game looks great. It is the dream of any retro inspired game to look this good. Other than that it is very retro in that it plays just like something which would come out in 1990. Good to scratch a nostalgia itch, but that's about it

The music is good, the graph is good, but the story is extremely boring. It's like some simple stories written for kindergarten kids. The fighting mechanism is ok, but not so interesting. I can totally bare it if the story is good because you need lots of effort to level up your characters. While the story is bad so you don't even have the motivation to do the work. Expand

Despite not being a big fan of this retro artistic section, I must admit, it is impressive in this one. The game is outstanding in the playable section in its turn-based combat and has an incredible soundtrack. To put something down, I think the game is short on end-game content. But definitely recommended.

The art style is fantastic I think. And although it requires specific characters in your party, I like the aspect of needing to use various skills to advance things or solve scenarios. The classic final fantasy turn based combat is also great. But digging deeper, I can't remember where I heard it/read it from, but someone had said that this game was lacking in substance or a purpose to it all. At first I didn't pay much mind to that comment, but as I played more into the story and the character's various arcs, I realized I was in agreement with that sentiment and slowly but surely lost interest.

Not to say that this is a bad game, but rather it feels a bit void of a meaningful purpose or direction.

Very nice graphics, great experience. The reason I come to this game is because it has a really good soundtracks (one of the reasons I play JRPGs). The downside is that the plot of each character has no relationship and interaction between the characters, but for me, the story is temporary. I still give 10.

Pokemon Sword, the second route of Fire Emblem Three Houses and Final Fantasy 4 on the ioS. So basically, three RPGs. The last two RPGs I've said about, I've made really slow progress on them.
But when I remember Octopath Traveler existed, (last I've heard about Octopath Traveler was from one Nintendo Direct and more than a couple of Youtube thumbnails) I've looked at some of the trailers and played the 3-hour demo... And I was amazed by the 3-hour experience I had with the Octopath Traveler demo and so, I've bought the game! This experience, which took me at least 85-hours to finish, was a great one and so it's time to review OCTOPATH Traveler!
Also, today's my birthday! P.S. MY FOCUS IS UNPARALLELED!!!

You play as one of the eight travelers and make him/her your protagonist (I chose Cyrus), you start to embark on your protagonist's journey, and recruit the other seven travelers and progress their stories as well. Some traveler's stories (in many chapters) are really deep, dark, captivating or engaging, while other stories (in some chapters) are kinda lackluster and not really engaging. But the overall story is really engaging itself and there is an optional extended post-game story with a truly difficult final boss battle (let me remind you again that this is optional).
The gameplay is really creative, in which you have to break your enemies' weaknesses, and each traveler has their own jobs, in which they have their own abilities, attacks, and support skills. There are secondary jobs, in which they're your traveler's jobs and four secret jobs/classes but you'll probably need a guide for the secondary jobs and the four secret jobs/classes.
The visuals are absolutely outstanding and it definitely recaptures the 16-bit JRPGs. Seriously, you might want to stop playing the game to just look at the surroundings. The characters' and bosses' sprites have so much detail put into them, and they just look great!
The music is very amazingly orchestrated. But when it comes to the music in battles and boss-battles, it's really mindblowing! You should really appreciate the musicians and people who went for all of that effort in making Octopath Traveler's outstanding music. You should watch this Youtube video, "How Octopath Traveler Hypes its Boss Battles", as it explains the music of Octopath Traveler and the transitions from this music piece to this boss battle theme.
When it comes to the side-stories (side-quests), lots of the side-stories don't really tell you (or at all) of what to do in the side-stories. You'll really need a guide for the side-stories. And it doesn't really help that the optional extended post-game story is locked behind at least six side-stories. Yup, you'll really need a guide for this.
The cast of characters is genuinely likable and unique, and the voice-acting is from well-done to extremely brilliant and talented. (I might be somewhat exaggerating)
The difficulty is truly quite tough, it really depends on what level your team is. On the map (of where it tells you where the traveler's next location is), it shows the traveler's next destination (in the next chapter) for their respective story, and it also shows what is the recommended level for the next chapter. I definitely recommend leveling your team (so basically grinding) around the recommended level. If the boss is too hard for you, either go to another's traveler's chapter or grind your team a few more levels. For really difficult boss battles, you'll need to understand the jobs' (and secret jobs') abilities, skills and support skills. So basically, for a difficult boss battle, you'll need to know what you're doing in the boss battle and to have a good (and solid) plan. It takes a lot of strategy and logical thinking to win a difficult boss battle. For the optional secret post-game story final boss, it takes massive amounts of strategy and critical thinking to win that boss battle, so GOOD LUCK!
There are multiple flaws within this game, from how broken the gameplay is (like exploiting the secret jobs' abilities), to how grinding works in this game. Seriously, there are a lot of minor and broken flaws in this game.

Octopath Traveler is partially excellent, and one of the greater JRPGs out there and this game will always have a special place in my heart. This game could've been better, but they tried and it worked somewhat perfectly well! From outstanding visuals to great voice-acting, how could you hate this game? (Well, there's the flaws...) Well, I really recommend trying out the Octopath Traveler demo for yourselves, and then you can decide whether to buy this game or not.
The score for Octopath Traveler is... 9.2! (9)

What a beautiful and subtle game this is. Music and artistry are masterful done.

Its not without some room for improvement though, the ties that bind the 8 characters together require a lot of digging, and while you can get to the credits without exploring deeper into the world's lore I urge anyone to pursue the "optional" super boss, which neatly wraps the adventure together.

Pretty much all 3 of the points missing from my score are due to the story. They are all pretty tropey and generic despite laying down groundwork for some incredible stories, falls back on mustache twirling weirdo villains and other tropes you see a lot in anime. I didn't expect all 8 stories to be in the same singular story but it's pretty disappointing that they don't interact AT ALL. Would've added more oomph to the weaker stories knowing they are still helping in some way and would've created opportunities to have characters interact and such.

One of the most unique looking and the best JRPG games of all time with 8 characters all having their own story that truly felt like a long, epic journey. By the time the game finished, it felt like the journey has come to an end. Definitely the biggest surprise of 2018.

I think the main takeaway here is the discoveries (about themselves) that the characters make. Yes the gameplay might be a bit "repetitive" when looked on the outside, but if you look at it in the context of the character's journey and inner battles, I think that it makes sense. I feel like the game makes a good point of showing you that those are the 3-4 phases you will go through if you have doubts or have lost yourself, or if you just want to become a better version of yourself.
The music is definitely a highlight. I often put some of it on Spotify when I want to transfer myself to another place (Frostlands themes are my favorites). I tried an experiment where I would turn on the characters' songs and try to guess the character and got all of them right! I think this shows (to me at least) how well written and how fitting the music was for the characters themselves.
The game can get a bit grindy, especially if you are trying to beat the final boss. But that's the thing with most RPGs. You can say it's forced, but I don't think so. As I've already mentioned, I think the main theme of the game is personal character growth. This is well conveyed with the story. Even though that was linked to stronger and stronger battles with demons of past and present, I still think that it makes sense that you have to grind - none of the character's motives weren't to become world beaters. They just tried to do what's right for their beliefs.
I don't know the replay value of the game, haven't tried it yet. But I'm sure that at some point I will be replaying this.
Another thing I really liked were how the towns themselves radiated with a specific culture. My favorite (as with the music) was the frostlands. I really liked the idea of a frozen land where most people would be staying at the inn or at their homes near the hearths. The other places are very well done too, and do show some of the problems of medieval days (as well as now sadly).
All in all I think this is a great all rounder. I love this game and it inspired many emotions in me. I'm thankful for that and it got me thinking about whether I need to go on a similar (spiritual, at least) journey to find my real purpose in life.

    Pros:

+ Fast gameplay and unique battle system
+ Some of the stories are great, and some are 'just good enough'
+ Variety in classes and opportunity to customize every single character
+ Easy to 'finish', hard to 'really finish' the game with the optional and final bosses
+ I personally really appreciated the fast travel system, which helps avoid a lot of backtracking
+ The side missions or secondary skills add an additional layer of gameplay which is entertaining (e.g. dueling mini-game)
+ Rewarding, hard to discover all the secrets

    Cons:
    - Endgame is too grindy, no easy way to level up enough to defeat the final boss
    - The 8 individual stories could be a bit more intertwined, sometimes I felt I didn't need to play some of the stories
    - Uneven character development

Story: Octopath Traveler follows the tale of 8 different characters with different tales of their own, rather then one main story with it branching out. Each story has it's own theme, revenge, redemption etc.

    Pros:
    • I have to say, the stories being told in Octopath are very engaging and a few of them were quite spectacular to play through. For me personally, the journey each of the characters take and where they end up was the real drive in playing through all the stories.
    • I really liked all of the characters as well with none of them feeling much weaker in terms of how much I was interested in them. However, Primrose and Ophilia were the ones that really stood out from the rest. Without giving anything away, both of their tales are tragic and yet so masterfully told.

    Cons:
    • If I had one problem with the way the story was told, it's probably how you usually would start 8 chapter 1's with all the characters, the all the chapter 2's etc. I just found the pacing especially slow because of it. Look I understand that's what it's suppose to be like, but it's still a problem with the game itself.

Gameplay: Octopath Traveler is a JRPG with a total of 8 playable characters with each of these characters having their own classes and a unique path ability that usually involves interacting with NPCS in a certain way.

    Pros:
    • The combat was quite enjoyable. With all the different classes attacks, spells and abilities. The Bp system as well added depth to the combat as well and the boss fights were excellent throughout the game. Also being able to combine different classes with a character made for more interesting playstyies.
    • This is a massive game even if you only do the main stories which is about 50/60 hours of gameplay. However, if you do the side quests, dungeons etc. it could be over 100 hours. My playthrough was about 85 hours.
    • Exploring the lands of Orsterra was a joyful one. Maybe a few more areas to explore, but it was pretty good overall.
    Cons:
    • This will depend if you like it or not, but I have to say the use of grinding in some JRPGs to increase the length of the game is a bit ridiculous and Octopath is no exception. Though it's nowhere near as bad as some other games I've played, it's still a very cheap tactic in this game and I found it very frustrating how it just slowed me down from experiencing this games character stories for a boring, repetitive task and really dampens the experience for me.
    • The side quests are really just real small filler that allows you use the path abilities to complete tasks. Although a few lead to some exciting rewards, many are just uninteresting fetch quests to fight someone, gather info etc.
    • Progression can be very slow in this game.

    Sound and Music:
    • The music is just astonishing. The composer Yasunori Nishiki has created a masterful score for this game and some of the tracks really got my emotions feeling strong and helps tell the stories and create life in the world of Orsterra. One of my favourite soundtracks in recent years from a game.
    • The sound fx are solid.
    • The voice acting is very good. Certainly a high standard in the English voice acting when used.

    Cons:
    • During the dialogue in the story, the voice acting is not used all that often and the game has you mainly just reading the text to yourself. this is a shame really that the voice acting only shows up at certain times. I wish they just picked voices or reading, not a weird mix of both.

    Performance and Graphics:

    Pros:
    • Very rarely does a game catch my eye before playing it with the graphics, but my word... Octopath is gorgeous and stunning. It's graphics was one of the main reasons I decided to play it and my god they will stick in my head for a long time.
    • Ran excellently, both on my TV and when holding my switch tablet. No bugs or glitches or frame rate drops for my whole time playing.

Verdict: This was a very tough one to decide. Octopath has the interesting stories, the great sound and amazing music, flawless performance and orgasmic graphics. Unfortunately it really suffers in terms of gameplay with the overuse of grinding and a lack of interesting activities outside the main story. I did enjoy my time and it's a decent game that I will remember, but probably won't play again anytime soon. At the end of the day if the gameplay isn't great, the whole game suffers.

    Story(s): 9/10

    Sound and Music: 9.5/10

    - So many areas with good art. But each area is exactly what you would expect. Towns that look like towns. Roads that look like roads. Caves that look like caves. This seems like a silly criticism, but for me, one of the central parts of a great JRPG are the fantastical concepts. Those are not here, at all.
    - Bossfights are the best part of this game and one of the few things that kept me playing. The art for each boss is amazing. Some of them are very challenging, some are there more because every chapter needs a boss apparently, but overall very enjoyable.

Although this game does everything right on the surface; detailed art, lots of options for combat and so much content, it lacks the important things. Character development; In spite of the many internal dialogues allegedly portraying internal conflict it does not happen in a believable way. Engaging environments; In spite of every map being beautifully made it lacks an interesting concept. Gripping story; Going through all eight initial stories there are no real surprises and if you read the conversations during those stories you have already figured out what the endgame story is.

In a few months i will remember next to nothing about this game. If you love JRPGs think about your favorite game and the moments you remember and why. This game does not have that. Thus:

Sunk in 40+ hours before giving up. It's just so dull, it ends up being a complete chore going from one chapter to another. It looks alright, but it's nothing mind-blowing.

Battle system isn't innovative in the slightest. You hit the monster with various weapons/spells, work out its weak spot, rinse and repeat for every single battle.

The story... what story? It's all so tedious and clichéd I actually forgot what was going on. There's very little interaction between the characters and there's no incentive to become invested in their outcomes.

Overall, probably the worst JRPG experience I've had in modern times.

In a nutshell, Octopath Traveler is JRPG at its finest.
    - Just badass graphics. This game is made in the Unreal Engine and it just an eye feast;
    - Good characters. I can see how unique they are. The English voice actors are also pretty good;
    - Awesome individual stories, but you will see some problems here because the 8 stories do not truly connect. However, this does not cast any shadows in the whole experience. Actually, some people think this is bad, I don't. Here is why: This is one of the things that make Octopath unique. We are so used to see the "group of people that join forces to save the world" that we think it HAS to happen. It doesn't. You follow their individual stories and they are satisfying as a converging one;
    - Marvelous soundtrack. The soundtrack is perfectly chosen for each moment and it just carries you with all scenes;
    - Fun, addictive, awesome and perfect turn-based combat. If you played Bravely Default, you will see some similarities with some aspects of the combat. It is fast, but not too fast, it's beautiful, and each class is unique and badass.
    - Some people say that the characters do not interact: lies. They do interact a lot, but you need to trigger the conversation with the + button. Their dialogs are pretty good for this type of JRPG also.

I truly have no complaints about this game. The individual stories are awesome and way more interesting that they look like when you start them. They have a proportional number of plot twists and they are filled with philosophical questions and good character motivations. They are emotional and exciting to finish. Whoever reads this, if you are a fan of JRPGs, or turn-based RPG, or phantasy games, this HAS to be on your list of games.

But after 20 hours of campaign and enter in chapter two the nostalgia was no longer able to hold me to the game and the lack of variations in combat and the structure almost equal of the main quests, besides of secondary missions uninteresting, made me stay bored.

The game in no doubt is a great homage to the old JRPG, but fail miserably to take any step beyond the structure already presented in the first chapter, being a repetitive sequence of grind and missions that fail to captivate and much less surprise the player.

My final advice on octopath is if you are a nostalgic player of JRPG (who likes Grind) and misses the games that marked your childhood this game is for you, whether you are a younger player and looking for new experiences or even a experienced player in search of something new octopath will be a frustrating experience.

I don't know how Square does it. They have a game full of potential and promise, with interesting mechanics, cool look, good music, but they still manage to pump out a smeller. I got pulled in by the demo - so beware.

For the TL;DR crowd, here's the short version: fun at first, but combat becomes repetitive and awful story made me give up.

Now Let's start with the good. I quite like the look of the game. I've mostly played it in portable mode, but whenever I plug it into the TV I'm surprised at how good it looks. Areas shine and twinkie with all sorts of details and highlights, and it's really impressive. Maybe not your cup of tea, but I think it's amazing.

The music is also quite good. Reminds me of Secret of Mana on occasion, which is compliment. Voiceover is a bit meh, but that's not a deal breaker for me. You can always switch to Japanese.

Once you get a full team, it's a bit easier to start roaming around and exploring, which is probably the best part in the game. There are lots of places to see, and a couple areas off the beaten path that are interesting. Interacting with NPCs in towns is fun for the most part, but it does get tedious by the end of the game.

The battle mechanics are pretty novel, and the Bravely Default styled BP (battle points) system is cool. Boss battles are usually a nice change of pace from regular battles, and boss sprites in particular look amazing. The shield/break mechanic is interesting if a bit exploitable, but overall the system is not nearly as easily exploitable as it was in Bravely Default.

Sadly, that's all I can say that I like about the game.

Near the end of the game regular battles are a bit of a slog, as enemies start racking up shield points - stretching out battles quite a bit. Boss fights are still interesting, but I feel that alternative approaches à la SMT are hard to apply. Boosting and buffing should be easier; the pace of battles is already slow, so having to do so much prep to boost the whole team is a bit of a downer.

And then there's the story. Oh lord. The story.

You probably know this by now, but none of the 8 stories have any relation to each other. Whatsoever. And even individually, the stories are mostly bad.

Tressa's is the worst. Her final boss? A character whose name we just learned about 20 minutes ago, whose story basically goes like this :

-HAHAHAHA I stole a diary from a loser I've never met! I have been searching for this diary for so long!
    20 minutes later:
-ARGH, this diary is useless, even though we've never met and I have no reason to hate you, I'll try and kill you!

I can't make this **** up. It's completely episodic. Most chapters could have been shuffled around and it wouldn't have made a difference. There is little to no character development.

And. The. Pace. Is. So. Goddamn. Slow. Most story bits usually go like this: about 20 minutes of exposition, followed by about 10 minutes of gameplay, then another 20 minutes of exposition. Most of which is pointless banter.

I'm also surprised that Square let this slip, considering the devs were the guys behind Bravely Default, another mechanically solid game ruined by awful storytelling. "Sure guys, just do whatever you do, I'm sure the story's fine". I know the game was financially successful, but still...

    Other odds and ends:
    - Quests are really hard to follow. All that was needed was a quest section in the menu. The vast majority of quests I've finished were purely by chance. "Oh, you want this? How convenient of me to have this forgotten item in my inventory that might be useful to you". Most of the time the rewards are garbage anyway.
    - Equipment management is surprisingly laborious. It's practically impossible to buy something useful from a store. As soon as you have access to a new location, you probably have stuff that's better than what they're selling. I've played through the whole game and never once bought an expendable item, they're so common.
    - Some battle animations go by really fast, and some take forever. Analyzing an enemy for weaknesses and showing HP goes by really fast, but HP and SP regen at the end of a turn is really slow.
    - I find the font too small. In portable mode it's okay, but it's barely legible on the TV from my sofa. My TV is not that small and no, don't suggest that I buy a 75" TV just so I can read the garbage dialog in this game.

All in all, I'm sad to see Square - once again - put out a game that works well, looks and sounds good, and has an interesting premise but still ends up being bloated and unfulfilling. With just a few tweaks, it really could have been a great game. But I'm sure they already have a mediocre sequel in the works, Nonapath Traveler: Bravely Secure (financially). I may have forgotten the Re: in there.

There is no real final boss you have to beat to finish the story. The individual character bosses also seem to ignore the whole party during story sections. Like, when a character's boss kidnaps you, they act like they only kindap that character, when the whole party of a super wizard, and a legendary knight is actually with her in the room. Those story lapses kinda break immersion for me. That doesn't mean the game is bad. But it could have been perfect it they addressed that. I love this game nonetheless, and I would recommend it for classic JRPG fans. Expand

When I played the demo, I loved it to death, but I had a feeling that the game would become boring if the combat didn't change up significantly, and that was true.

Every single time I encounter a new enemy, I just feel like I have to rerun the same old gameplay loop of finding its weakness, breaking it and killing it, and when this gameplay loop never changes, it gets really boring really fast. This problem is further exacerbated by the fact that the enemies all have the same attacks, and you will never run into an enemy with a new attack pattern or combat strategy, but rather just have to keep hitting bigger and bigger damage sponges the more you play.

The game has also refused to let me fast travel up until now, so you can imagine how pissed off I got when I found out after 30 hours, that all that walking along linear paths, constantly being forced into combat- which I didn't want to be in- encountering the same old time wasting damage sponges again and again, was a giant waste of my time.

The graphics have also not grown on me. I guess this is because I have probably spent too much time walking back and forth between towns, which has really just made me hate the world, as all the travelling is walking along linear paths and never gets any fun. This has caused me to despise looking at the paths that I walk on all the time, and has prevented me from enjoying what is really a cool looking game.

There are so many features that the game just never explains, and what I have understood of the game in my 30 hours has just not been enjoyable enough. I wish I had spent this money on any other game, really.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Story:
Stories, for me, are a driving force that can make me continue playing a game even if the gameplay or combat aren't good enough. A game with a good-great-interesting story can make me push forward through grinding just to find out what's going on.

This was not the case with Octopath, not for me anyway.
I feel it so bland, so cliché but in a bad, cheap way, I couldn't be less interested in what was going on, with a few exceptions.
JRPGs usually don't win awards by their stories originality, but they are usually strong enough to keep all the parts together if you don't scratch too much into them. Great JRPGs have a way of inducing a sad, nostalgic feeling about their world, characters and the parties that are formed when you play them. The world is at stake and the odds are grim. There's a sense of urgency to your party's quest that drives you forward, even without any counter clock. You are important to the world and your actions have a meaning behind them. JRPGs (and some WRPGs too, but with less frequency) also have a twist when talking about good/bad, light/dark concepts. There's a certain philosophy very subtly exposed, always shown through characters motivations/narratives; Not all baddies are completely bad and many of them have deep, intrinsic motives to do what they do. There's an explanation to what's going on which goes beyond "They are evil for the sake of it".
Of course, this doesn't mean all jrpgs stories are deep, original or even interesting, and many times this is a formula repeated over and over again, like movies from a genre repeat the same key components all the time (e.g. a western). Games can and should be innovative when storytelling. And World-saving concepts do not determine whether a game story is good or bad should it lack them.
However, Octopath story, at least for me, doesn't seem to have a story that sticks everything together. I can't find a sense of unity over the world and the pieces seem all over the place because they don't belong together or don't care about the others. The eight completely different characters with entirely separate stories don't do a good job telling the story of the world because... there's no story of the world. There are 8 characters with 8 stories... and that's it. For me, that premise along with the issue of the "open world" narrative, fails as a driving force of the game.

Even the character's stories, with a few exceptions, are very cliché and the motivations feel old, overused after so many years of jRPGs classic characters formulas; The hero with the all life friend that betrays him, the traveler that wants to see the world to be the best in what he/she do (this is used more than once in Octopath), the cold, distant hero that only feels love for his/her master and has to go searching for him/her after a mysterious disappearance, etc. We have seen these so many times before you know what's going to happen, twist or not.
Yes, maybe the stories get better and interesting after 2 chapters, but that is not good story telling. If you don't capture your reader/player/watcher over the first pages, you lose it. And this is even worse in a game where you can't go straight over to chapter 2 to see if anything interesting is going to happen or not. You have to spend several hours to see what's going on with that particular character you liked, and after so many other equally important stories, you start to lose interest over that first character. If this was the way the designers thought the story was going to be told, then they could've added writers tricks to keep you wanting for more at the very beginning of the game. Small connections or mentions about the other characters stories while you are doing one of them. Something like "hey, that's ophelia's friend, what's he doing here?????" or "Why is Primrose enemy mentioned here???". Remainders of the bigger picture.
The same happens for the world as a whole.
Why do the characters join the party? Why do you even let them join?? They are not friends, they do not talk to each other almost at all during the first chapters, so why are we helping them?
Why there are so many monsters over the fields? Why those kind of monsters in this map and these over that map?
Side quests are clichés that come out of every other game of the genre, plus clichés from open world games. There's almost no motivation for you to complete them as they feel bland and boring. For example, a fisherman inside a city is concerned and sad that he doesn't catch as many fish as before. So you walk to the map to the size of the city and you spot another fisherman that almost literally says "hahaha all the fish for me, hahaha, i'm so bad and selfish". You need to defeat that fisherman in a duel so he promises he won't do it again before running away from you. This quest remained me so much of Pokemon's Team Rocket I almost laugh out of embarrassment. The quality of these side quests is terrible.

The game is gorgeous. It is a callback to SNES style of RPG, like FF6, but modernized with shimmering water and snow. The music in this are amazing! Every land has a different sound and gives you a different feel when you go from one place to another. Some stories are weaker than others, like Tressa’s which has become convoluted towards he end. The lack of overarching story for the cast is also a con.
It is one of the best games I played in quite a while. And a Switch exclusive to boot! If you’re a JRPG fan, you should play this. There is a demo on the eShop where the save will transfer if you ever get the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OCTOPATH TRAVELER is the definitive example of the tried-and-true JRPG genre on the Nintendo Switch that provides a thrilling, yet beautiful storytelling experience to both veterans of said genre and new players willing to immerse themselves in the continent of Osterra that seamlessly builds itself up no matter where you are. It divides the compelling journey of eight protagonists, each with their own ambitions and goals they will inevitably meet, into four chapters with a total of 32. Regardless of the character that you choose first, each will initiate at a relatively simple beginning which cements the rudimentary premise of the plot with a cut-scene. This laid-back, peaceful start marking the beginning of each adventure is reminiscent of classic RPG's that began on an easeful note. It subsequently transitions into a more heated, adrenaline-fueled narrative once the player is engaged in their individual stories, pacing the game well.

Any and every JRPG is not complete without a unique battle system, and OCTOPATH TRAVELER successfully manages to toss in nostalgia and innovation into a cauldron brewing a stylish potion of gameplay that sources elements from its spiritual predecessors (BRAVELY DEFAULT). Aside from the typical command inputs (Attack, Defend, Flee, Items, etc.), the battle system utilizes a mechanic known as 'Battle Points' (abbreviated in-game to BP) which can speed up the progress of your fight whilst potentially turning the tides in your favor. Up to 5 BP can be stored per character, which on a side note only four can be present at one time - reflecting the party formula of the game's RPG ancestors, and can be accumulated every turn unless the enemy casts a spell that temporarily prevents you from earning such. The combat itself is a breathtaking sight to conceive - in which small sprites of your characters perform devastating attacks with the use of CGI and special effects that emphasize the severity of your blows or spells without overdoing it entirely. What compensates for the rather tedious grinding aspect of the game is the 'thrill of the fight', as Olberic tends to assert. Each protagonist bears skills unique to them (with the exception of secondary jobs) which allows you to devise a strategy based on which character you have chosen to accompany your primary protagonist. Would you have a Cleric (Healer; Ophilia) and a fast attacker dishing out blows to gain SP (Thief; Therion) for the party as part of a defensive tactic or favor the opposite and have characters such as Olberic and Cyrus dealing as much damage as they can before they are eliminated? OCTOPATH TRAVELER integrates a strategic component into the gameplay that intensifies the battle, particularly when facing bosses and powerful overworld enemies with a higher level cap. The difficulty of the game is dependent on your commitment to your protagonists; would your rather finish the game thoroughly by gaining enough experience to withstand any challenge thrown at you (either in the main game, through secret bosses or end-game content) or skim through it quickly at the risk of Game Overs? In short, grinding = easier gameplay whilst the opposite provides a more challenging experience.

What is arguably one of the, if not the most important aspect of any given JRPG is the story that accompanies them. Even OCTOPATH TRAVELER advocated this particular aspect as its main selling point, which should raise the expectations of many wanting to dig their noses into a 50-hour+ campaign, right? On more negative grounds, what every other user below and above seem to be clamoring about is the flawed execution of the story (not necessarily the story itself; those are great and, at times, tear-welling). To my honest dismay, they aren't wrong. The eight paths that you can decide whether to walk upon or not with Ophilia, Cyrus, Tressa, Olberic, Primrose, Alfyn, Therion and H'aanit are all parallel to each other and does not incorporate an overarching plot justifying the reasons for the characters forming a band in the first place. There are, in contrast, heaps of informative texts correlating each story to another, albeit this is only prevalent at the end of the game, but it requires you to piece together the overarching story of Graham Crossford, the man who attributes to the start of almost every journey. The execution of said story is also formulaic, with a routine designated to visit a given town, activate your Field Skills and engage the allocated boss repeating itself every chapter. This does tend to get progressively off-putting for completionists, unless you can tolerate every other aspect of OCTOPATH TRAVELER to forgive this flaw.

In conclusion, OCTOPATH TRAVELER is certainly a remarkable experience for both new players and veterans of the undying JRPG genre, only held back from perfection by its storytelling flaws. Nonthless, it is a must-have for any copy of the Nintendo Switch.

Aunque he jugado grandes juegos como God of War, Detroit become human o Super Smash Bros.

That sheer ambition is all the more impressive because Octopath Traveller uses sprites. Little 2D characters made up of even littler squares.

But aside from those story flaws, everything else in this game is practically perfect in every way.

This in general creates a heartfelt RPG to compete with some of the best on the Nintendo Switch. Expand

I really enjoyed Octopath Traveler, it's incredible.

    PROS:

    - The gameplay is in general outstanding.

    - The combat system is great and adds some interesting strategy. Battles are often engaging, there are real decisions to make involving when to use BP, whether to cast status effects, or when to use Steal or Collect commands.

    - Outfitting the party is a lot of fun, choosing which characters, equipment, jobs and skills to use to create a balanced or focused mix. There are a lot of choices to make, but there are only 10 or so stats that can be affected. The process was always fun, and never felt "fiddly" or confusing.

    - The graphics are fantastic, the world map, character art, diverse monsters, backgrounds, boss art, dynamic atmosphere effects, etc, etc are all completely awesome, it's a gorgeous game.

    - The voice acting is good to great. I've heard some bad voice acting in the past and thought that this voice acting was fine. The key problem in general with voice acting is when it takes you out of the experience because it's bad or over the top, but that happened very rarely for me with this game. There is quite a lot of voice acting in this game and I'm glad they have it in there, it really does add a lot to the experience.

    - The music is exceptional and there is a lot of it, I didn't really get bored of the battle music. There are multiple boss and battle musics so that helps.

    - The stories are good to great. Each character has 4 chapters (Which each take 1-2 hours each). In each you have to travel to a town on the overworld, advance the story in each town, go through a dungeon level, and defeat a boss. Each of these 4 steps can take 15-30 minutes. It's a bit formulaic, but each chapter feels a lot different than the last, as each character advances on their journey. Most of the chapter stories are quite engaging, and there are only a couple that I thought were a bit odd, or somewhat unresolved. I personally love the "16-bit theater" which is a bit exaggerated, and I thought the writing was really good.

    CONS:

[Edit: I have played beyond the 8 main stories and completed more side quests, and as a result I need to remove some of the Cons from the list!]

    - The side quests have issues. It's too easy to complete some of the NPC side quests inadvertently without reading any of the dialog. I often complete them unintentionally without knowing it. Side quests should require some kind of purposeful action by the player. Other side quests are extremely ambiguous, sometimes you have to travel to a certain person in a specific town, but there are 24 towns! I didn't know I'd have to be taking notes on every NPC in every town so I'd know which of the hundreds of villagers to talk to for a given situation. There needs to be better hints than what is recorded in each Journal entry.

    - I actually didn't have to grind for the entire main game, which was fine, but it meant that I was a little overpowered for the entire 2nd half of the game, it wasn't a big deal, but I was looking for a little more challenge towards the end.

    - More meaningful inter-character interactions would have been good.

Not much else to say, I really enjoyed the whole experience, it took about 90 hours or so and I still have a bunch of post-game side quest dungeons to explore.

Excellent game. More than a throwback to older RPGs. I'm taking my time to level up all of the characters simultaneously and the only "grinding" has been by treating this as an rpg and not using the fast travel system very much, so it doesn't feel like grinding. The battle system is well thought out. I cared about the characters and the stories are well designed.

Square Enix has applied Unreal Engine 4 tech to vintage sprite work, creating a world that blends modern polygons with old-school bitmap graphics. The developers have created a storybook world that extrudes the dungeon maps of 16-bit console RPGs into three dimensions, then soaks everything in atmospheric lighting and shadow effects.
The name octopath traveller comes from the fact there are 8 heroes (octo) and they’re all following their own story line. The game’s eight heroes are all well-defined characters, each unique from the others. They distinguish themselves by dialects, personalities and quest goals.
Every element of Octopath Traveller comes together brilliantly to create a refreshing take on the genre. While it channels the spirit of old favourites, it never feels derivative. It genuinely does feel like a 16-bit RPG that has evolved into something new rather than being mere nostalgia-bait anyone who’s been pining for a great RPG will not be disappointed by Octopath Traveller ...whether they want a vintage experience or a brand-new one

Overall, I'm very disappointed with the game.

The first 20 hours when I was going through all the first chapters I was in love with it. Then when I started the chapter 2s I started getting less and less engaged with the stories, but I was still pretty addicted so it, so it didn't bother me too much, but then I hit around 40 hours I just hit a wall.

The stories aren't that great and the characters pretty much stopped developing after their chapter 1s. They all have a similar structure: go to new town, discover problem, find person, go to dungeon, fight boss, repeat. There's pretty much no variety. I was really encouraged by the first chapters as I thought all the stories had potential to be great, especially Primrose's (who is my main), but they all peaked in the beginning. There's just no variety and I just stopped caring for the stories and the characters, I could literally care less how they end. The fractured story telling I think really damaged the characters and the story. Also none of them intersect which makes it really boring. I've completed half of the chapter 3s and I've finished Ophelia's story, and then I'm going to finish Primrose's story and call a quits.

This game has really become a slog for me. The grinding became really bad after the chapter 2s and between trying to steal really good weapons and grinding for money, I just got exhausted from it all. I tried keeping everyone at a good level, but it became a big hassle. It's really annoying that there's no way to share experience with party members not in your party. A lot of other RPGs do that like Persona and it just makes things easier. The gameplay has just become really repetitive, along with the story.

Also dungeons leave a lot to be desired, they don't feel very fun or interesting. No puzzles, no twists, no interesting environments, no significant length; you basically just run through them in 10 mins until you get to the boss and move on.

The redeeming factors is its fun combat. It's not perfect: I wish I could examine my stats in battle and my weapons stats in battle, but other than that I find it a blast and that's one of the reasons I've been able to hold on for so long.

The music is really great and I never get tired of the tracks. They hit it out of the park with that.

The graphics are also fantastic. 2D HD is awesome and I hope to see it return for other games.

I also like the voice actors, though I wish more lines were voiced.

So, do I regret my purchase? I wouldn't go so as far to say that, but I'm just bummed out that this game really got worse the more I played it. I thought it was a nice experiment and I'm happy Square Enix has been successful, but I certainly would not recommend this game to any one except for big JRPG enthusiasts. I hope Square does something way different with the next game because I wouldn't buy another game that's in a similar vein to this ever again.

While those looking for a deep, story-heavy RPG might find Octopath Traveler lacking, the game is a hugely enjoyable modern take on traditional turn-based games of yesteryear with a collection of short story, rather than novel-length, narratives. The graphics represent the pinnacle of pixel art and the score is amazing. This game was pretty much a system-seller for me and well worth every penny and hour spent with it.

You can either hate Octopath Traveler’s art direction or love it, but it definitely will not leave you indifferent. Distinct visuals are just one of the game’s many strengths which make it a feast for the fans of jRPGs – and much more than that. It’s not flawless though – the dungeons are bland and there are virtually no relations between the characters in your party as they don’t communicate almost at all. [09/2018, p.66]

Octopath Traveler is unapologetically old-school, and would not have been out of place if it had released back in the golden age of JRPGs.
