Honestly, Octopath Traveler is MY favorite release of 2018.
I've spent 59 hours on it, and MAN is it addicting!
I give it a 10/10 for the Soundtrack, Art, Gameplay, Story, Everything!

Great mix of old-school pixel art and modern special visual effects.
As expected for a Japanese RPG, lots of grinding, but the new combat system compensates nicely.

Pros: Nintendo 2D graphics are awesome, battle mechanics, the menus to navigate through the map, weapons, and skills are easy and simplistic to understand and learn.

Cons: The stories are so bad. I can't tell you how annoying it is to hear H'annit and her "old English". It's painful to get through some of these stories. As I got to everyone's 4th chapter I was so uninterested in everyone's stories that I skipped the prologues and went straight to the battles. Not every game is perfect, but this really REALLY brings what could be a great game to just an OK game.

This game is not only the reincarnation of all the best things that 16-Bit RPG heavens had to offer but an ETERNAL MASTERPIECE of the video games industry. Anyone alive should play that game as story, graphics, sound and gameplay mechanics are all flawless and so close to perfection, hardly seen in any game! Thank you team Octopath :)

I don't like JRPG normally, they tend to stretch out and the format I just don't like. And I hate retro games in 8/16 bit style. I didn't like Persona 5 or Shovel Knight for instance. But this... Wish more games could do that. To me this is a 10/10 so far, and I hope other game developers take after these guys. If you're hesitant since you're normally not into JRPG, I'd say this one is by far your best bet. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The class system probably is the only gem in this game. Most of the characters are poorly written.
Not to mention something JRPG loves to do and never bothers to improve, insufferable grinding.
And this vial of poison ruins the whole experience a good game could offer.

Favourite Switch game of 2018 so far! Amazing for anyone who has enjoyed the classic Square JRPGs like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6. Music is godlike and worth the price of the game alone. I played 90 hours in my first play through. Can’t recommend this enough!

Story- 8 characters in this game that have their own self-contained story. For the stories themselves, some are pretty interesting like Cyrus or Therion, while others like Primrose, Olberic and Alfyn are pretty average, "safe" stories. Now though the characters themselves dont really come together, what I really like is how the lore that centers around in each of the stories, help give a much bigger world and connects the stories themselves more than the characters. There's also a secret 9th path, well if u could call it that, that does bring the lore and the 8 paths together a good bit. (Reason for why the 8 character's stories happened and indirectly involved with each other) But on how to find the secret path you will have to find yourself.
    >Graphics- Its what the devs called "2D-HD" which honestly does look great. The pixel art is gorgeous, the 3D models are simple yet effective. The pixel textures do kind of repeat, which honestly is great for nostalgic purposes of the limited memory of 16bit games. Some of the techniques they use in the game is pretty advanced like Bokeh DoF, complex specular maps, water is beautifully animated and have their own reflections, all objects that im aware of interact with the light, the character sprites themselves hav their own real time shadows that interact with light also, the small cloud shadows that move across the scene, alpha effects are pretty high res, etc. All give this game such beauty, it almost gives a sense of it being a living diorama. 720p 30fps Docked and 576p 30fps Handheld, which is understandable tbh with the techniques it uses. Its kinda hard to see the lower res which is great tbh.
    >Music- The music is gorgeous and blends pretty well to feel like a background that honestly makes me feel immersed in the world. It also contains 3 different Battle themes, so you wont grow tired of hearing the same theme throughout the game, like other games do. Some of my favorite themes are from the Woodlands and Frostlands
    >Gameplay- Whichever character you start out with has the combat start out pretty simple with BP (that feels just like Brave in Bravely Default), where you can stack and use these points that can make you hit the enemy multiple times, boost how much health you can heal, boost magic damage or increase how many turns you have a status buff. As you level up and collect other party members, the game auto scales its level requirements in each of the areas for you to traverse in for combat. As you defeat each enemy encounter you get Jp (job points) which you can stock up. You start out with a base job that pertains to the character and these Jp can be used to unlock more skills that pertains to your job. (each unlock will increase the amount of Jp you need for next unlock; 50, 100, 500, etc.) As you unlock more skills of your job, you unlock Support skills which can be used in combination with any other support skill unlocks from other 2ndary jobs. (can equip up to 4) There's a total of 12 jobs in this game, 8 of them are the ones that pertain to each character (Dancer, Apothecary, Warrior, Merchant, Scholar, Thief, Hunter and Cleric) but their are also 4 secret jobs that are technically like a fusion between 2 jobs in the pool of 8. They can only be obtained by going through their dungeons which require to be very high level'd. (Starseer, Runelord, Warmaster, Sorcerer) Unlike obtaining the other 8 jobs by simply finding their cave, and walk up to it and grab it. Game requires deep strategy the farther you get in. When to correctly time your use of BP and amount, which characters to give ur BP, who to buff, etc. The game constantly keeps you engaged. I've had a few team wipes caused by one **** up in my choices. The game is very grindy also. Their are also Path Actions that are unique to each character....well technically 4 different ones where each one is shared between 2 characters with small variations.(Purchase/Steal, Challenge/Provoke, Scrutinize/Inquire, Allure/Guide) These do have some relevance in need to be used for the stories.
    >>In conclusion, this is a beautiful game with great music and gameplay. I haven't played many classic 16bit JRPGs but this is definitely a game I do recommend to people who love nostalgia, a good challenge or just like playing retro games. (and also dont mind the grind it requires, or a more or less average overall story)
    >>Rating: 8.7/10
Update: Beaten the True Final Boss in Octopath. It was a 2 phase fight and made u use all 8 of ur party members. But man its one of those games where the Final boss actually requires skill/strategy to defeat instead of just grinding away in levels. (levels only give increment boost) Now THIS is wht a Final Boss/Super Boss shuld b like. Very few Jrpgs actually make it a challenge nowadays tht require skill.

I’ve never seen anything like it’s “HD-2D” graphics and I personally find them gorgeous, and the music is both excellent and hits the proper mood for the moment it’s played spot-on.

As someone that has gotten easily bored with traditional turn-based RPG battle systems in the past, I find the combat very entertaining and I have yet to get bored of it. I find the job system very clever and I love being able to design and create a party unique from everyone else that’s played the game.

I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about the story, and while it certainly isn’t anything groundbreaking, I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as people make it out to be. I’m personally invested in finding out what happens in each story and I’d call that successful.

Yes, the lack of an overarching plot or any substantial connection between the characters is a little jarring, but I think it was intentional - they wanted to create eight different stories and eight protagonists of equal importance, and I think that they pulled off that balance flawlessly, even if the stories weren’t extremely inspired. While some more character interaction would have been great, I think Square Enix was trying something different, and I applaud the attempt. One thing I liked about the stories is that each one seems to have a different tone - some are lighthearted, some are darker, and some have a real sense of danger and urgency. Even if the stories are a bit cliché at times, they don’t feel monotonous (at least to me).

As far as the few hiccups go - the out-of-combat “Path Actions” were an interesting idea, but honestly they fell a little flat for me. They aren’t tedious, but I don’t find them all that interesting personally. The side quests are a little confusing and almost feel like an afterthought, and I really have no desire to pursue them.

I have hit a few spots where I’ve needed to do some heavy grinding, but overall it hasn’t been horrible. Some of the bosses seem to be a bit stronger than their challenge ratings suggest, and those bosses are frustrating; but most are just challenging, and that’s exactly what I was looking for.

Overall, I definitely recommend picking this game up and giving it a try. I think almost everyone will be able to find something to love about it, whether it be the graphics, the music, the gameplay, or the stories.

Octopath traveller is unusual in that it sheds the typical large overarching narrative in order to tell 8 isolated and simpler but still endearing stories. While your 8 party members work together in combat their stories are their own with a few overlapping plot points that come together at the end. The lack of inter-character interaction is lessened by skit scenes but it still seems strange to be playing a party that doesn't interact like a party, that being said the quality on show here more than offsets this one issue.

The soundtrack is absolutely incredible and one of the best I've heard in a decade. Combat takes what the studio developed with bravely default, slightly reduces the amount of different jobs, but gives us a ton of additional strategy with the break system. The 2D-HD graphics are both nostalgic and technically impressive at the same time. Voice acting is surprisingly on point, although H'annit's mannerisms leave something to be desired. All in all, if you're a turn-based JRPG fan, this is a must buy, and I hope Square-Enix takes note of it's success.

    Strengths:

Battle system: The system requires you to be creative and utilize secondary job skills. If you don't have enough skill variety you will have a bad time. I enjoyed the balance between using your Battle Points (BP) (which allow you to either attack more times in a turn or increase the power of the skill you use) and the break system (which is a is defined by the enemies weakness to various skills and requires multiple hits to leave the enemy exposed). You need to learn to combine skills and save your most powerful spells for the right time. This back an forth creates a fun decision making opportunity.

Classes: I really enjoy the classes that are available. The developer did a good job giving certain classes unique talents (elemental attacks or particular weapons). By doing to you need to try out multiple combinations of primary and secondary jobs to get enough coverage for all fights. Additionally all of the classes have their roll. Scholar is an Area of Effect monster with good elemental coverage but when combined with Dancer you gain access to the dagger weapon type, the dark elemental, and buffs for your other characters.

Atmosphere: The music and visuals are really well done and I find myself humming the various theme songs even when I'm not playing. The visuals are made to look "old school" but the lighting, water, and particle effects bring it into the modern world.

    Weaknesses:

Story: The individual stories really vary in terms of quality. I struggled getting through the introductory chapters for some of the characters due to lax pacing and overall disinterest. That being said some other reviews on here mention the lack of interaction between characters as a weakness (I would generally agree), however, they may not have seen the option to press "+" at various times in the story which generates a dialog between the characters that you are traveling with. I haven't completed the game yet, but I can say that I look forward to completing certain chapters more than others.

Overall I haven't found this game to be a grind and have really enjoyed my time with it. I will update this review when I complete the game!

All these things kinda changed upon completing the game. I think overall it took me about 90-95 hours to complete the whole thing. The characters are great. The combat improved substantially upon unlocking secondary jobs, which allowed more coverage and made fights feel more even. And obviously this is one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played. Graphically it is phenomenal and I feel it will age very well in that regard.

If I had one gripe, it would be the connectivity of the stories. Yeah, taking on the optional final boss does give a little insight into how they’re connected but it is still kind of a stretch, and still is only optional. Each of the stories are good, but it’s really hard to believe that a whole party is working together in them. You fight with them but no character ever really bleeds over into another’s story. I found this to be mildly disappointing but overall didn’t change my views of the game majorly, it just is what kept it from a 10 in my book.

Other than that I can say it is one of the best games I’ve ever played, in most other aspects. The character customization is deep, the combat is more like a complex puzzle, the stories are interesting and have depth, but wrap up just before overstaying their welcome. And the world is quite big despite being linear. I feel the game is worth it’s price tag for sure. Just wish we’d have more character interaction.

If you’re feeling like it’s a bit of a drag at the beginning, just stick with it. The first 10 hours are the hardest to get through, but after that it is such a joy to play. Loved how long it actually is. Felt I got my money’s worth

There is player interaction, it's called travel banter, and no grinding is needed (did everyone's chapter 4 w/out any grinding at all) as well as each story being connected (don't want to spoil). The design and game-play are stellar, stories great, etc.

It's incredibly fun, addictive and there are hours and hours of content to explore, depending on how much of the game you decide to check. It's an almost perfect JRPG.

My only complain would be that the story feels a bit weak, since there is never a "sense of urgency" or a global issue to be addressed. You are just checking what 8 people decide to do with their lives. There is no mission, apart from the dozens of sidequests and individual chapters for you to investigate.

But I don't even want to say this is a "bad" thing about the game. It's just a different approach. This is an almost perfect game and that would alone justify the purchase of a Switch.

Even after doing all the subquests after completion as well as final dungeon (spoiler)
    - difficulty is decent.
    - A little bit of repetitiveness throughout the completion of quests & character storylines.
    - Background blur/graphics can take abit used to.. can sometimes confuse the player as to where to advance.

Hopefully they will improve on the cons of the game. There is room for improvement but this game is one of the best if not the best switch games.

Nice! This game is something quite unique and a real selling point for the Switch this summer. It looks and sounds fantastic and even though I’ve only played 5 hours I feel compelled to carrying on with this. I’m not really big on JRPGs but the nostalgia and style of this game will appeal to all, not just the 16bit generations.

The thing is the game can be sorta boring for some people. Don't get me wrong but its a good game! But fighting peasants ( annoying monsters) can get annoying and the story can be dull. Who would travel around the world just to find a stupid book! The only part that made this a 7 is the boss fights. I would recommend getting this game when its on a sale for 40 bucks.

This game is... fine. Nothing special. It has RPG elements that all work, a battle system that is reasonably well done, but the nod to nostalgia reminds me of a time when Square made better games. This is certainly not the new Chrono Trigger, and the time it takes to finish it does not correlate to the quality.

Trying to keep this brief but informative, bullet points!
-Music is reused again and again. This game takes like 80 hours to finish, so this gets old
-Story is very bad. All 8 characters have their own stories that don't play into a greater story, and most of them are pretty cheesy and devoid of appeal
-combat is just good enough to make you think THIS GAME IS DEEP until you realize how repetitive the game is
-art style looks good in a trailer but doesn't hold focus
-20 hours of good game in an 80 hour package

    What I wish was different...
-focus on world building and making the story interesting. There is very little charm to any of the characters, nor through-line in their paths. They don't even talk to each other unless you make them.
-more music for a game that is so long
-more depth in combat if the game wants to be so long (look at Xenoblade 2...)

True final boss exists hidden behind a wall you would surely only find through the internet, and forces you to use every character, including the ones you've likely benched. So, to finish that, you must google and grind, all for a story that has 0 intrigue. Considering this means grinding my least favorite characters in a game full of uninteresting characters, no thanks.

If you hardcore LOVE JRPGs, this one is competent but not special.
If you care about story or presentation, skip this game!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Octopath Traveler is the much anticipated turn-based JRPG that was first announced at the Nintendo Treehouse for the Switch in January 2017. Like many gamers, I grew up playing JRPGs from the Final Fantasy series and longed for the return to traditional turn based 2D combat. Upon seeing the trailer for this game, I was ecstatic to see the revival of the genre I grew up infatuated with.
Octopath Traveler features eight playable characters, each with their own unique abilities and story. Some of these stories, such as that of Olberic, the disgraced warrior that is seeking redemption or Primrose, the woman who’s father was murdered during her childhood and is out for revenge, follow common tropes in RPGs. Other stories like the tale of Cyrus, the scholar with tunnel vision for finding a book of dark arts stolen from the academy library, aren’t as commonly used. In general these stories are well written. They follow a logical progression through four chapters for each character, but the overall story progression jumps around due to the setup of the chapters.
I have three issues I have with the stories. First, the dialogue is often long winded to the point that the talking takes more time than the gameplay. What is interesting is that some of the dialogue is voiced over entirely and some of it only features voices for the first word or two. The second issue I have with the stories is that they are disjointed. Without an excessive amount of level grinding, it is nearly impossible to play the whole story arc for one character straight through. The third issue I have is that each chapter follows a formula; lengthy dialogue session dungeon, boss fight and then finally another lengthy dialogue session. This setup makes the stories somewhat difficult to follow as you have to play through a series of other character’s stories before you can move to the next set of chapters. The lengthy dialogue sessions make the game a little more drawn out than it needed to be. I feel as though less dialogue and a feasible way to follow one character’s story start to finish would have benefited the game.
The combat system in Octopath Traveler has a similar foundation to the systems found in JRPGs of the NES and SNES but with a few enhancements. The enemies in Octopath Traveler all have a shield with a number in it displayed beneath them on the screen. Next to that, there are a series of squares that have a ‘?’ by default, These squares hide the attack types that an enemy is weak to. The number denotes the number of vulnerability attacks the enemy must take before they are dazed through the end of the current round and the following round as well. Once dazed, attacks deal more damage to the enemies. These vulnerabilities are revealed in one of three ways; either by attacking the enemy with the correct weapon or spell type, Cyrus’s ‘Study Foe’ before the first round of combat, or by using the Analyze spell that Cyrus has. Once learned, these vulnerabilities will immediately be revealed the next time you encounter the same enemy.
Another unique combat feature is that every turn the characters build up a battle points. For each battle appoint accrued, characters can either add additional melee attacks or super charge one of their class abilities. This can be very useful in wearing down an enemy’s defense rapidly. Since there are only six melee weapons, and each character only has eight class abilities, there isn’t much variety in attacks that are available. These include H’aanit’s Beast Lore and Alfyn’s concoction ability. I used each one a handful of times and in general didn’t seem very useful. Several other abilities seemed to really serve little point in using. If the ability didn’t result in making an enemy dazed, it didn’t seem like it was useful.
Where Octopath Traveler really shines is in the aesthetics of the game. The sprites used for the characters is in direct homage to 8-bit and 16-bit JRPGs. The landscapes and the background are more graphically robust. The landscapes are in a diorama style, giving the feeling of a 3D environment. As you move your characters through environments, the perspective of the backgrounds change as well. It gives an immersive feeling that gives the landscapes a depth not seen in traditional JRPGs. In the larger towns, you will see something large, such as a cathedral in the background of town as you enter. Then when you go into the next part of town, the cathedral will be in the area in which you can explore. The amalgamation of the 16-bit sprites with the stunning 2D-HD scenery sounds like it would clash. However, it was executed impeccably. In short, the art style is simply brilliant!
This game is well worth playing and makes me look forward to more titles using this engine in the future. Octopath Traveler is a solid 4/5 and worth playing for gamers experienced in JRPGs and newcomers as well.

I take back everything good I said about Octopath Traveler:
    * the grind is ungodly
    * it's only playable if you break it * 8 shallow, poorly-written, stories crammed into a narrative belong in a Tarantino movie not a game * the plot is painfully slow * the characters are broadly drawn and 2-dimensional * the dialogue is garbage * the promised hours of gameplay are artificial level

    * the pixelated graphics are a lazy ploy to sell you nostalgia rather than an artistic choice
    * it's not worth $60
    * it's not worth chasing it down to 3 stores only to have to order it on Amazon
    * All of you cult fans don't really believe it's as great as you say. You're just desperate for a good RPG on a system you bought solely for Breath of the Wild and got very little except a bunch of full-price, repackaged, 2-year old Wii U games that didn't interest you enough to buy the system the first time.
    * Nintendo is more interested in selling you cheap plastic figures than delivering quality games
    * Square Enix sells trash now because fans will just make excuses for them because they sold you your favorite game when you were a kid.

This is my first JRPG game after few years and I have to say I wasn't disappointed.
Thus far I have recruited 6 out of the 8 characters, yes 8 characters which are all playable, and every time you meet and recruit a new character you can play the start of their story (At least I think thus far I have played the stories of all 6 that I have gotten)

Combat is fun, and works in a good balance but some of the Travelers are less useful in combat than others, for example Primrose thus far hasn't had much of a use in combat in the end, while Cyrus is a must for his passive ability to find weaknesses of the enemies you encounter in your travels. Big point in combat is to break the enemies guard to prevent them from attacking and getting more damage from your attacks, personally I see this as a double-edged sword for example you have bad luck and have none of correct attack styles with you the battle will be drawn out and dangerous.

And as everyone has already said the game looks absolutely beautiful, the light, water, trees everything is beautifully made and crafted with love and care, even normally dull areas are worth seeing.

But this is a must for a JRPG fan to play, maybe even regular RPG fan, but outside of that, if you don't like grinding and other busy work in games this isn't for you so if you buy this game when you don't like to grind or like RPG's in general don't be surprised when you feel like you wasted your money and don't give a game 0 points because you didn't like 1 aspect of the game.

    *EDIT
Now I have spent little over 50 hours which is quite a bit for a working person, I'm nearly done with the games main stuff, got all the side jobs and started finishing stories of the characters, while I do believe that the game can be finished faster due to the reason of my bad habit for over level.
While the stories can be a hit or miss none the less it has been good enough, and while as EVERYONE has cried the characters don't truly influence each others stories this was never the aim, and the chats that they had gave me a few laughs every once awhile (most of my favorites had been between Primrose and Tressa)
And Primrose became much more usable later on to get some of the advanced jobs, and even more powerful after using one of the advanced jobs with her.
But in the end I think 8/10 is a good rating and leave it as that, has been worth the money I have spent unlike a lot of the recent games that give barely 10 hours of gameplay.

Octopath Traveller is a beautiful blend of the charm of old-school RPGs and the exciting visual details and refreshing new gameplay mechanics of the future. The game is also incredibly long due to the eight different story paths, and the music is some of Square's best! Overall fantastic game that is a must for newcomers and returning RPG veterans.

I thought that was kinda lame. Menu screens need much improvement for equipping and switching characters. I feel that they didn't even try and just threw it together like it was an unfinished product. Disappointed for all the hype this game got.

the plus side is the battle system is new and the stories are interesting even though its 8 separate stories and the other characters are only involved in the battles like hired mercenaries or once in a blue moon it will have you press + to have them talk with each other but that is rare. Music is great like all square games.

    - The advanced job shrines are great optional challenges and the rewards are amazing
    - Fantasitic soundtrack
    - Using the “Provoke” and “Challenge” skills can lead to some whacky fun
    - Great use of HD rumble and works perfectly in handheld mode
    - Awesome credits sequence that recounts your adventure

    Mixed:
    - “Travel Banter” does a serviceable job showing interactions between characters, but these inorganic interactions tend to make the comradery seem hollow
    - The sidequests are, more often then not, fun to figure out and there are often multiple ways to complete them, but some have very vague descriptors that are near impossible to figure out without some sort of guide
    - Once you get through a wall of obscure side quests, the post game dungeon is a lot of fun and a satisfying final challenge that wraps up the overall narrative very nicely
    - The traveler stories are hit or miss

    Bad:
    - The formulaic nature of every chapter gets stale after a while (Run around town doing errands, fight through a mini dungeon, and defeat a boss) Out of all the chapters, only 3 out of the 32 chapters really step away from this formula
    - Some of the dialects are just straight up horrendous and poorly written (H’annit’s Shakespearean in particular)
    - Having to switch characters into your party just to use their unique abilities in town is pretty tedious. If you don’t have Therion in your party while exploring dungeons, you’ll miss out a ton of good items that are in chests that only he can open.

Well, the game is called OCTOPATH traveller. Meaning 8-paths traveller which is how the game is designed. In order to make a bigger plot that had dialogues etc between character the game would have to be linear and to force you to get certain characters to proceed past certain points etc. The game is design in such a way that you can choose which characters you want. You could potentially solo the game with just one character and this is the whole purpose of the design of the game. Again, having the storys branch together would be a completely different game. If you don't like this then well, this game isn't for you. I do agree that the stories are slightly too similar and a bit too shallow but the gameplay and combat is superb and I would definitely recommend this to any JRPG fan.

    Edit:

Having played 50+ hours I have to adjust my score and review. I reduced the score from 9 to 7. Why? Because this is a deeply flawed game.

    Problems:

    * Lack of voice-overs in most dialogues feels cheep. All the story dialogues should have it but now some have it while some doesn't. It feels completely random and like they had to do this because of time or budget limitations.

    * The Side Stories are utter garbage. Never experienced anything like it. There is no way to know what you're supposed to do and it feels like they intentionally did this in order to force you into buying a guide book.

    * All Main Story chapters are built in the same way (except for one or two exceptions) where you read tons of dialogue followed by a very small dungeon with a boss at the end, followed by even more dialogue. Also every chapter takes place in a city. This pattern gets extremely repetitive after 8 chapters, so imagine this after 32 (8x4) chapters. Also the stories are way to short and half of them are plain boring (Merchant Chapter 4 is about someone stealing your journal and you chase her to the sewers to get it back. I mean really? Maybe a 5 year old would enjoy this...). It feels like the stories are designed for 6-12 year olds while the combat difficulty is balanced towards hardcore JRPG gamers.

    * The world is empty except for some branching paths with chests at the end. The same goes for dungeons which are also way too small.

*The job system is boring. Each character has a Main Job like Hunter or Warrior. Also every job exists as a Sub Job meaning anyone can be any class which means that the fact that for example Alfyn is an Apothecary doesn't really mean anything since anyone can be an Apothecary. There are 4 Advanced jobs which are different. It would be nicer if there were 8 Advanced Jobs instead of the 8 standard Sub Jobs, meaning that if you wanted an Apothecary in your team, you would have to pick Alfyn. Now it feels like you have 8 characters just for the sake of it when really 4 characters is all you need to have all classes available. Also for some weird nonsensical reason you only get the Advanced Jobs after completing the the Main Story (you could in theory get them before Chapter 4 but the bosses are harder than the Chapter 4 bosses). Why would I need them when I've already completed the game?

    Good:

    * The graphics and art style is awesome.

    * The music is awesome..

    * The combat and especially bosses are very well designed.

    Verdict:

I would love to see a Final Fantasy like game with this art style and combat but with a proper nice story and more work put into making the world feel less empty.

Alfyn's story in particular was a snoozefest for me while Primroses had me all emotional. The mechanics are solid and deliver a great turn based rpg. The progression is pretty fun, but I would have prefered if it were deeper. If each job had split off into two advanced jobs and you had to choose which one to advance to, that would have been great. Not only would have their been more jobs, as I finished the game long not needing jp, but it would have deeper customization options. The dancer could advance to either assassin or necromancer (physical burst damage or dark magic). There also could have been a better end game. As it is, I think *slight spoiler* there is just one dungeon. A whole post game main quest chain would have really let you make use of *slight spoiler* those 4 jobs you can unlock.

The two things that just really bury the deal for me are only two things but very, VERY significant. 1. The lack of real party interaction, and an overarching plot (Or at least the absence of an overarching plot 20 hours into the game.) The first 16-20 hours of the game consist of experiencing what is vaguely the same exact plot with maybe 3-5 constants changed. It's like watching the same 4Kidz Shonen anime pilot episode for hours on end, the only character with a plot i really find intriguing so far is Primrose, whose literally just the definitive telling of the same 8 basic stories. Out of curiosity i wished to see what the future of the game held, and it really disappointed me. The job system is my favorite thing that is incorporated in the JRPG genre, my favorite part of the classic final fantasy games, favorite part of bravely default, and favorite part of many other games. Now one of the most exciting things about the job system is mixing/matching and seeing what you get. But unfortunately this game's job system has very uninspired aesthetics, they don't try to make names for the hybrid class, the only character with a truly cool unique outfit is the Hunter outfit Tressa gets. Every other look in the game is just giving the character the same basic outfits of the other characters, no headpieces either. There are no characters with the charm and aesthetics of something like a dark knight, a dragoon, a black wizard, etc. It is extremely disappointing. I hear there are 4 unique classes at the end but i don't think that's enough. All in all i'm just severely disappointed with how lazy it is, especially considering how shallow and detrimental the main gimmick of this game is, id rather they made it a traditional JRPG if i knew they wouldn't have been able to pull it off. How they will add modern conveniences like fast travel but forget about how important those unique job's are. It's sad because i actually like the game but it **** up the two main things i was really looking forward to. Expand

Incredible. Never played and RPG so good and that kept me so in the game for so long. Beautiful art, great music, each character having unique abilities give you a lot of variables to think on and having jobs expands this in a lot of ways. 50 hours of gameplay went by and didn't even felt it. Great game, just go play it.

    - Beautiful art work
    - Good voice acting
    - Each character has a semi-unique way to interact with NPCs (there are two versions of all four main ways to interact)

    Cons
    - There is no grand story. Each character has their own simple story. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I would have preferred if they were brought together by a similar goal and decided to team up instead of there being no real reason for them teaming.
    - Each chapter follows the same formula: Run around a town talking to people to get the story, and then go through a dungeon with a boss at the end. Rinse and repeat for 32 chapters. Wish there was more variety.

    Nit-picky cons
    - There is a weird blur effect on the foreground and edges of the screen. I looked through the options and found one that looked like it would turn that off, but it didn't. I just wish there was a way to turn off the blur on the edges as least.
    - I wish it was fully voice acted. Some parts are, but others they will just grunt or say a few word when a speech bubble appears. There doesn't seem to be any difference between the cut scenes that are voice acted and the ones that aren't.
    - Random encounters go on for a bit too long. I don't mind long, epic bosses, but random encounters I want to go by quickly. I am level 30 in a level 20 area and battles are lasting about how long I would want them if I wasn't over leveled.

The combat system is a lot of fun, I like how they've put a new spin on the classic turn-based combat which we see in JRPGs most of the time. BPs and vulnerabilities playing key role in this game, it keeps the fights quite fresh and the repetetiveness kicks in much later. All in all, it's a perfect game for what it is... a JRPG for Switch (which I preferably use as a handheld, I haven't even unpacked the dock yet) and damn good at that.

    Soundtrack is also incredibly good!

Beautiful to look at beautiful to listen to, Octopath Traveler is something special on the Switch. Originally when I heard that the stories don't converge into one giant story I was a little apprehensive about this title but took the plunge anyways - and I am so happy I did. AMAZING game! Battles are great, exploration is nice and this really does the older SNES RPGs I grew up with justice.

How much you enjoy Octopath Traveler will depend entirely on how much your enjoyment of “old school RPGs” is tainted by the rose colored glasses of nostalgia. You’ll either be delighted by all the things that have slowly vanished from the genre… or be reminded why games aren’t really made this way anymore.

Technicality: graphic is OK, but not stunning, rather don't play on big TV, music is perfect and nice for your ears, haven't seen bugs or glitches.
    Play-ability:
Story is fine but not epic, characters are fine but I do not feel the bound with any, skills system is very good, a lot of items on a market to buy, sell, find... Fight is perfect - very good and interesting system coming from @Bravely Default@ game......and..... this is it: "Bravely default" on 3DS is first game which I could think about when i am thinking about Octopath. Unfortunately for Octopath, Bravely Default was much more interesting for me (better story, better characters, same good fight)

If you have 3DS and have not played in Bravely Default (9/10), but thinking about getting Octopath, its fine, but you will be more happy with this nice 3DS.
If you want some JRPG but preffer to have more action go for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (10/10 for me).

    1. Mechanics
The mechanics are smooth and feel great. Its a classic turn based system with the bar showing who turn it is and various action can effect battle order. It may play slow for those with no patience for this type of system but it looks great. Think the battle system from FFX with additional mechanics.

    2. Graphics / Sound
Honestly I was worried about going back to a 16 bit look but I was so wrong to worry. The Sprites are adorable and very expressive. Combine them with excellent lighting and haunting sound tract and you have got a recipe for success. I cannot believe how beautiful this game looks in a classic sense. Final Fantasy has gone for photo realism now adays and Dragon Quest is going with the anime look but Octopath say screw that I can make old school look cool.

    3. Story
The stories are very fun and sometimes haunting. I made a deeper emotional connection with some of the characters in the first few minutes than other video game protags after 15+ hours (Looking at you .Hack... so boring). Really this story was a breath of fresh air after the failures of most other games the past few years. I mean the big titles like GOW, Persona, Horizon, and Nier were all great but leave them behind and none of the non-AAA games really stood out to me UNTIL NOW.

Summary: BUY BUY BUY. I give this game 9/10

Every dungeon feels exactly the same, only with a different skin. I don't get curious to see what is around the corner, or where the next dungeon will take me. I don't bother looking for secret exits or hidden mini-bosses. None of that exists. It's exactly the same each and every time.

Yes, the battle system, graphics, and music are all superb. And that's what kept me coming back. But the game's flaws, as few as they may be, are too serious to overlook.

Octopath Traveler does exactly what's promised. It delivers a full old-school JRPG experience while adding a few modern touches, for someone who is too young to have ever played a SNES JRPG, I find this game incredible. You can start with any of the eight characters and your journey continues from there.

The battle system itself is pretty straightforward, it's a traditional turn-based type in which you have to strategize in order to win. The fighters are able to boost their attacks in order to do more damage and strike multiple times, the more turns you get, the more you can boost your attacks. Every enemy (bosses included) has a weakness and you can attack the enemy weakness, if you have a fighter that wields whatever the opponent is weak to. Strike their weaknesses enough times and the enemy will 'break', lose their turn, and be at your mercy. This is the perfect chance to boost your fighter to the max and open up a COWA.

If you ever feel like your fighter isn't packing enough punch, there is a job system. By entering shrines, you can acquire second jobs for your characters. Your character will have their primary job and have the abilities of the second job. These make for very interesting combination, combine the right jobs and you'll have an extremely powerful party. My personal favorite is the warrior+scholar, I combined that and Olberic became a powerful Battlemage (unofficial term).

The characters have their own distinct personalities, and if you're wondering...yes, they do interact with each other! It's not just one character walking up to another and asking to join the party, the characters have actual conversations with each other. I just witnessed Olberic and Cyrus having a conversation about the difference of arena fighting as noble competition and a bloodsport. The characters start to have conversations with each other once you reach the Chapter 2 area. They're Heart-to-Hearts from Xenoblade, short, yet interesting.

The stories of the travelers do not converge. No they don't end up fighting one big baddie in the end, that may disappoint some gamers, but for those who have the patience there is lore at the end of the game that explains how all the stories are connected in a way. The individual stories of the characters may seem a little cliche to some, but they're overall interesting and make you want to continue. However, because of strong enemies, you may have to level up a bit before continuing your journey.

All that being said, no game is without its flaws. My only problem with this game is how grindy it can be it times. You'll have to do a lot of fighting to get gold for your weapons and armor, but that's with every JRPG so I shouldn't complain about that one. The one thing I will say is the structure of the game can be a bit of a drag for players who want to focus on one individual story at a time.

For example. I started with Olberic, and I wanted to continue his story but the area in which his next chapter takes place has many high leveled enemies that can defeat my party in a few turns. In order to prepare for that, I went and gathered the remaining 7 travelers to increase my level. While the introductory tales of the other travelers are interesting, I had to wait before I continued Olberic's story. Pay close attention to the reccomended level on the map!

All in all, Octopath Traveler may have one or two gripes that can make the experience a bit less pleasant than expected, but its goods greatly outweigh the bads. Octopath allows you to make your own journey and do crazy things, this is truly a fantastic JRPG and I hope to see more turn-based titles in the future. There's also a good amount of post-game content. That's why I'm giving this game a 10/10.

In my opinion, very few games- be they old or new- can stack up to the overall quality of this game. The music is compelling and original, while also serving as a nice throwback to older titles of this genre. The same can be said of the “16 bit” graphics- the sprites are reminiscent of FF6/Suikoden 2, but Octopath differentiates its models by placing them on a three-dimensional backdrop which creates several instances of “hidden”, FF7-like areas of the map. Generic village interactions can be spiced up with character specific skills (Path Actions), coming in a “good” and “bad” variety. For example, the Warrior and Hunter have “Duel” (good) and “Provoke” (bad) respectively, which allow them to challenge a town member to a fight. There is no consequence if the Warrior loses his 1v1 duel, but the Hunter, aided by a cohort of animal companions, will cause a reputation dip in town on a loss.

Characters all also have unique battle skills in combat (Talents). The fusion of Talents, weaknesses, breaks, role differentiation/flexibility, Skills/abilities, and Battle Point storage/management propels combat to the top of the list of Octopath’s strengths. This combat serves as a clear spiritual successor to Bravely Default, but also is unique enough in its own rights via slight tweaks to its progenitor’s system. Very few battles will ever feel similar, which helps with the stereotypical humdrums of JRPG grinding. The one area in which Octopath falls short is in the plurality of stories- rather than one cohesive tale- accented by the lack of character interactions. All in all, each individual vignette is still compelling enough to hold your attention enough to want to complete each story. If you can look past this, I promise you will not be disappointed with what this game has to offer.

Expand

Overall, it is well done for what it is, however what it is, is a repetitive system and the story falls off all too quickly. Expand

I understand some people's issues plots not coming together for characters, but as I've played this more, I really disagree with that being a concern. It has EIGHT different really cool stories that get me invested. And it's unique that these are 8 different people on their own journeys. It makes it feel more believable than a super team uniting against one big bad evil guy. This is a Fantastic reimagining of the 16 bit era.
Despite his look this game is actually doing something quite particular in it's structure, 8 differents heroes with different destiny, you can pick any, build the team you want, choose when you want to advance in a story, you can go anywhere in the map.

The music is absolutely fantastic, up there with persona and nier easily.
The game is stacked with content, expect 50 hours for the main game, and 80-100 for a completionist run.
The difficulty is perfect in my opinion, hard enough so you actually use strategies, but not too hard so you get frustrated.
The sidequest are very good, basically the npc tells you a problem or something vague and you have to figure it out, there is no specific indication on how to do it, but if you pay attention to dialogue and understand the world you will figure it out! It's much better than all those JRPG with giant Arrow, that tell you to kill 10 birds or something like that.

The only potential negative is the quality of the dialogue which is not always very engaging with all the stories.

    Awful cringy voice acting
terrible looking graphics (pixel art can be interesting but this is a blurry ugly mess compared to celeste or stardew valley or other games)
    story isn't interesting
    saving is annoying too!

but I didn't play much the first hour was enough to make me not want to buy it

But don't feel bad if you like it people have different tastes!

Octobopath Traveler was always going to receive a high rating from me. Why? Seems like Square Enix is convinced that graphics and contstant action are the only way to go which has completely ruined the Final Fantasy series for me as it just turns out to be a terrible action game labeled as a Final Fantasy. There are only two complaints I have about this game. The first problem is that all the weapon sprites look exactly the same and this really bothers me for some reason but not a big issue for most people. The second problem is that the characters really have no interaction between them for most of the game. Its like they just travel together for no reason and ignore the fact that others exist when going through their stories. Other than that, I am loving the fact that I get a new turn based RPG instead of having to replay old PS1 and PS2 games to get a great RPG playthrough. Well done and I hope this sparks the return of turn based combat that never really needed to go in the first place. Expand

Having played the demo and found my niche in Olberic as the starting character, (I tried Cyrus 1st, and that was pretty awful) I decided to pick this title up. Had I just started as Cyrus I would NOT have bought it (the character, voice actor and combat of him are face-palming terrible). But there were/are some redeeming qualities to the title that made it a pick-up.

Had I just started as Cyrus I would NOT have bought it (the character, voice actor and combat of him are face-palming terrible). But there were/are some redeeming qualities to the title that made it a pick-up.

The music for one, the middling nostalgia the game evokes through combat/towns/leveling-up/finding new weapons and armor. All these are a nice touch, but the MASSIVE glaring problems keep me from recommending this to people beyond the niche.

~The story is mediocre, like kindergarten wrote poor. This type of writing needs to die in JRPGS. It's so cliche and tired, I almost have to ask why even bother making the game at all. There is too much TELLING and not enough SHOWING. Ophelia's story might have been the most insipid rendition possible. I was outright mocking the outright laughable dialogue between her and his sister. No one speaks in EXPOSITION, but apparently the writers at Square Enix. F- for that team, you should know better!

~The acting is everything from cliche to overwhelmingly insipid. Cyrus might be the biggest doofus I have ever heard in a game in my lifetime. I wish there were an option to turn off the "flourish" lines for each character. Sure I have to listen to them talk in scripted moments, but the add-on lines interspersed in the general dialogue boxes need to go away.

~combat is alright and straightforward, which leads to over-tooled enemies with either too much health (absurd levels of health for low-level characters) or an inordinate amount of attack power which take massive amounts of health off, and this is coming from enemies levels BELOW your party. The "break" system is either overpowering or just a strategic waste of time. There is no way to know the enemies Level other than the danger zone...which is the enemies level? Not clear in the slightest.

~side quest tracking is poor. There is no build-up to the quest and no way to track/guide to it which leads you to forget what it is, what it is about, who it is for, where you picked it up in the first place and what the reward is. In other words--side quests are nothing. To add to the confusion, the "level" of the sidequest is not prominent and not level fluid. You could be level 10 and pick up a side mission that is nearby, only to find the mission is 30 levels above you? You'll forget it's there forget where to turn it in and the reward will be below where you'd need to be to complete it. This is terrible design.

~Money both in acquirement and use is all out of sorts. Enemies drop a pittance of currency forcing you to grind/steal for HOURS just to be able to upgrade your party to keep competitive. Consumables and gear are all over the place and generally way overpriced. Fixing your rep is FIVE THOUSAND EACH TIME! This might not be a problem in the mid/late game...but at the start? This leads to NOT using abilities you NEED to use (like scrutinize). Get it wrong 5 times in town (not per person) and NO ONE TALKS to you, leaving you to go GRIND money outside of town to be able to do anything there! What a stupid idea this was and the way it was implemented.

~This is a re-tooled Bravely Default with a different coat of paint, and the mechanics moved around. I liked BD, until the repetitiveness kicked-in and ruined the entire thing..and Octopath Traveler might end up being the same thing.

~The biggest problem here is...the plot. There is no plot. The plot is 8 different plots that all run concurrently to each other, but never overlap and never coalesce into one main narrative, ever. The "travelers" never talk to each other, never interact beyond the first time you meet them. They are voiceless, empty fighters that have NO RELATIONSHIP WITH EACH OTHER...EVER!! This might be the most anti-social RPG I have even a part of. How do you travel with people, fight by their side and NEVER ACTUALLY BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM!

I've been updating this review all weekend. It started at a 7 and has whittled down to a two. This might be the absolute worst JRPG I may have ever played. How do you form a group of people and never have them interact with each other? HOW? Avoid this abomination at all costs. Don't be suckered in by the graphics, it is a lie! AVOID! You've been warned.

Octopath Traveler is a competent and charming title with only ONE real fault, but it's the average execution of many JRPG tropes that overall lend it less of a "masterpiece" entry from Square.

Despite the run-of-the mill story and combat mechanics there are some stand-out features that make this worth the price tag in my opinion, just be aware of a few things before purchase:

    1. The English voice acting while not poor in audio quality, is TERRIBLE in terms of portraying what the character would sound like. Solemn moments are punctuated with upbeat inflections, and therefore upbeat moments lose distinction. I tried SEVERAL characters, each cringe-worthy. Then I switched to Japanese dub - problem (mostly) solved. That is unless reading is a chore for you, in which case I would have to seriously wait on this game. It was that bad it many cases.

    2. Combat while deep, does not ever really challenge the player to plunge the depths of the mechanics at hand. Personally I think a 3-player party restriction would have solved this a bit, as there isn't anything inherently wrong with the combat itself, it's quite enjoyable. Still, any real difficulty curve would have to come from skipping potential party members, or forgetting to restock items before battle. Not much else is there in terms of difficulty curves, especially since most of the "weakness" puzzle is solved from simply attacking until you solve it.

Those are the two major gripes, aside from a generally lackluster story for roughly half of the available characters that falls squarely into the "generic" classification. Still, seeing as how Square helped pioneer that genre in the West, its a somewhat fitting homage that while not vastly different, is very much the best of what we remember from youth.

There are some outlandish rave reviews that I think come from behind some tight nostalgia goggles, so go in expecting average and you will be pleasantly surprised.

While those looking for a deep, story-heavy RPG might find Octopath Traveler lacking, the game is a hugely enjoyable modern take on traditional turn-based games of yesteryear with a collection of short story, rather than novel-length, narratives. The graphics represent the pinnacle of pixel art and the score is amazing. This game was pretty much a system-seller for me and well worth every penny and hour spent with it.

You can either hate Octopath Traveler’s art direction or love it, but it definitely will not leave you indifferent. Distinct visuals are just one of the game’s many strengths which make it a feast for the fans of jRPGs – and much more than that. It’s not flawless though – the dungeons are bland and there are virtually no relations between the characters in your party as they don’t communicate almost at all. [09/2018, p.66]

Octopath Traveler is unapologetically old-school, and would not have been out of place if it had released back in the golden age of JRPGs.
