The game has a universal appeal, and its status as a modern classic is uncontested. This is just another block in its pedestal. [Issue#189, p.80]

It's still Minecraft, and after all these years it's held up, especially when you can pop your Switch out of the dock and bring it wherever you want. [Issue #28 – July/August 2017, p. 17]

Thanks to the Switch edition’s versatility, combined with the free and exclusive Super Mario mash-up pack, this is one of the best versions I could have started out with and is an ideal purchase for fans on-the-go and newcomers alike.

The Nintendo Switch version provides an authentic Minecraft experience that is hugely benefitted by the ability to play it anywhere with physical controls. The one drawback is the lack of voice chat, which makes online multiplayer less fun than on other platforms, so it’s best enjoyed in the same room as your friends.

On a console seemingly packed with intense, time-consuming games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Shovel Knight, Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition feels like a breath of fresh air. With its endless possibilities and freeform gameplay structure, it can be as casual or intense as you want it to be. Coupled with the ability to undock and take it on the go without having to submit to finicky touch-screen controls, this might just be the best version of Minecraft on the market, and it is undoubtedly one of the best games currently available on the Switch.

Minecraft is truly a success on the Nintendo Switch that boasts accessible controls and a glorious interactive environment that will keep players attention for hours upon hours.

If you don't already own Minecraft elsewhere and it appeals to you then there's no question, buy it! If you do own a copy on something else then you'll be needing to justify that double dip. It's the most practical and probably best portable version of Minecraft you can buy and that added Super Mario content really adds to the charm. You'll be playing this for a very long time and the only real limit will be your imagination.

Minecraft Nintendo Switch Edition borrows the best of the handheld versions and the possibilities of its console siblings, making it a superb version a game that almost everyone can enjoy even if you have player dozens of hours in the past. Touch screen controls and the fact of being able to play wherever you are makes the difference here.

The endlessly creative Minecraft works best as a portable game, making this (almost) fully-featured Switch port one of the best versions of the game.

Besides Some technical limitations, Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition offers the same experience as other modern home console versions do, with the added benefit of being both playable anywhere, anytime. This is the key deciding factor that should determine whether one should pick this version or not over others, as this lets you play and build the same world, both at home and on the go, without any major compromises. The Wii U offered that comfort already with off-TV mode whenever someone else would want to use the TV for something else, but the Switch does way with the limitations of being away from the system hooked to the TV since the system here is completely portable, and this the best version possible outside of the realm of PC.

Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition is arguably one of the, if not the best way to enjoy the game. The only thing missing is some online features that would make the game all the better with some friends online.

Ultimately, the Switch Edition provides players with the most complete and best portable version of this addictive and popular game. The new content alone isn’t worth the asking price, but if you want to get your ‘craft on while on the move, consider the Switch Edition.

Releasing Minecraft on the Switch was a real no brainer for Microsoft, the game has found a natural home and is worth yet another purchase.

Minecraft: Switch Edition contains all the elements that make the popular construction game so great. If you like playing with blocks anywhere, this is undoubtedly the best version.

Minecraft is still the same great game, and it feels right at home on the Switch. It feels awesome to take the game on the go with such tight controls and accessibility, the online functionality is excellent, and the game is still a ton of fun to play with friends.

While other console Minecrafts have it beat on resolution and maximum map size, the Nintendo Switch Edition is the only version to give you all the authentic Minecraft goodness wherever and whenever you want to play...It looks good, plays well and hits all the classic Minecraft buttons, but with the bonus that your Minecraft addiction is a little easier to fit in with normal life. Throw in some of the best themed Minecraft content around and you have a must-have for Switch gamers, albeit not the absolutely best version of the game.

Minecraft Switch Edition is a strange animal, largely focused around a competent, if simplistic survival game and supplemented with worldbuilding that you can share with maybe one friend who also owns this edition of the game. Stripped of the game’s best aspects and with a limited amount of skin packs, much of Minecraft’s appeal is lost. Split-screen co-op and portability options do what they can to entice an audience, and may attract some eager to expand their Nintendo Switch library.

With the Switch, the tradeoffs vanish. Screen real estate aside, you're having the same experience on an airplane, subway, or in a remote wilderness tent as when docked to your TV. Minecraft is already the finest thing I've experienced in this medium, the answer I'd probably give to the one-thing-you'd-want-on-a-deserted-island question. And thanks to Switch, it just got an order of magnitude better.

Minecraft Switch Edition isn't quite the best at any one thing, but it fills its niche with style. It stands below its PS4 and Xbox One counterparts in the size of the world it can build, but makes up for that by being a pitch-perfect portable experience. The physical controls and four-player splitscreen put it ahead of the full-featured Pocket Edition. It's everything the Vita version wanted to be, becoming the best portable version of Minecraft yet.

All told, this is yet another excellent port of Minecraft, nothing more and nothing less. With that being said, we would strongly recommend that you pick up this version, as the versatile setup of the Switch allows this to be the most easily accessible and playable Minecraft to date. That convenience factor is the only real notable difference, however, so it’s up to you whether that justifies paying for another version of Minecraft. If you want to play the best portable version of the game, however, look no further.

For fans of Minecraft, this absolutely seems like the version you’ve been waiting for if you wanted to get as close to a full-fledged experience as you could realistically want on a handheld device. For people who aren’t among the already-converted, it is still the same game it has always been, and it has its merits, but aside from portability there’s nothing more compelling about this version than there has ever been. It’s been well-established there’s a ton of game to be had here if you enjoy it, the Switch is just making it more easily accessible than it has ever been.

Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch has solid visuals and framerate, but it’s held back by smaller worlds. This is easily the best handheld version of Minecraft.

It's more powerful (map is much larger) than on other portable devices such as iPad, PSV while it's portable and you can play it anywhere you want compared to the powerful consoles such as PC, Xbox and PS4. So people please stop whining about how this version is no better than the console version. Can you even play a solid (not the trimmed down version on iOS or PSV) Minecraft on subway with Xbox or PS4?
In general, this Switch version makes me want to play Minecraft much often than before and I think it's a a great for Nintendo Switch. The only cons for now is its relatively high price compared to other platforms (though it included some nice DLC texture packs and Mario mode).

Yes, if you only play games tethered to a TV or a monitor then you should buy (or already have) Minecraft on a console or PC. I also hear people say that they can buy the mobile version... multi-touch is utter crap when it comes to 3D games! The switch version isn't for everyone, but if you've never played, play on the go often, or actually want to play with GOOD controls. You may want to pick it up. Full Review »

A great port, I really enjoy having Minecraft on the go.
It's a bit of a shame that Nintendo does not officially offer Trophys / Achievements, but the game solves it well.

Technically all is fine. World size is more than enough for exploring, the limited drawing distance for mobile is acceptable, as the game runs smoothly with 60 frames per second all the time.

Local multiplayer is a great addition, but of course that only makes sense on a TV, the Switch display is a bit small for it.

If you don't have Minecraft yet or want a version for on the go: do grab it, it's a great port and deserves love.
