An excellent game! I absolutely loved it, a worthwhile successor to the original Metroid games. The graphics are smooth and great looking, combining the 2D style with modern technology. The controls are fantastic and improve on the original, combined with an interesting story.
Only downside is that it's a pretty short game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What an absolutely phenomenal game! This is now my favorite Metroid game. this is one of the best 2d games ever in my opinion. Some bosses are harder than order ones after you beat the game you unlock a hard mode which is even more challenging. Only the Chozo soldiers get a little repetitive after a while. Expand

Dread is essentially the most well rounded metroid game, as each of its predecessors have definitely iterated on the metroid formula, but not in all areas. Super metroid is often seen as the best metroid game, and its sequel fusion added more story, but less exploration. Zero mission struck a nice blend between the two but had many minor issues, partly due to it being a remake of the first metroid. Overall, it seems dread has done a zero mission, where it takes the best ideas from super, fusion and samus returns and compiles them into the ultimate package. It has the exploration of super, the storytelling of fusion and the improved combat action mechanics of samus returns. It then goes even further, choosing to spice exploration up with emmi sections that create super buttclenching encounters, improve story telling by using less dialogue and more facial expressions from samus (which definitely worked out better than something like other m), and the new combat speed and moves like the slide and flash shift make dread a fast paced thrill ride. This is amazing as the fast paced combat never interferes with the slow paced exploration. This beautiful combination makes dread stand high next to its predecessors, and even higher on the switches library, making it my favourite metroid game and one of the best switch games, right up with botw and Mario odyssey.
Notice i am writing this review a while after the games release, as to get a proper opinion of it (many negative reviews were written 1-2 days after, which is just a bad joke) .
The difficulty of dread has been a point of contention for many, but i never saw it as a problem once. The game is inherently skill based, and steadily teaches the player its combat mechanics. Aswell as this, respawning after a boss puts you at the boss door to avoid breaking the games pacing, and if you are entirely stuck, as a metroidvania dread allows the player to slow down, backtrack, explore and find more powerups to help them in battle. If you are stuck or having a hard time in dread, it is simply t the player who is at fault, as dread gives the player every opportunity to succeed. I can see why others may have an issue with learning boss counter timings, however this is a live and learn experience, dying in dread is like I said, not the end of the world.
In general, dread has to be the best game of 2021, with huge story moments, intense and heart pumping boss fights, and tranquil moments of exploration, with soothing ambient music tracks to enable your explorative mind. The games great, and I cant fault it, buy it.

Lovely game, I was a little disappointed at the very beginning because of the emmi chasing me around gets old really fast. However, the game just went up high. All the Samus abilities, enviroment, enemies, background music mix up together in a great game overall. Very enjoyable. Awesome game.

The whole point of the game is to have fun suviving not wasting 30 minutes so filled with rage you want to shatter your switch, cry, and scream so loud your vocal cords snap and you choke on your own blood and die. Other than that it's a fantastic game. Love the boss fights, it's like learning a new dance as you glide past all their attacks. The robot partner voice was an annoying choice. The fact that you have to go through 98% of the game to unlock all of your abilities is a poor choice. I'd rather have had at least half the game with all her abilities to freely explore everything and test out her true potential, maybe even get creative in how i beat each boss instead of just having to make do with what i got, and immediately hitting a dead end again and again when trying to explore and collect. How are you supposed to enjoy Samus' powers if you dont get everything until the last boss? Everything up to that point wasn't the abilities carrying you. It was your skill to outmaneuver your enemies. Which yes i do enjoy that but why not both? Parrying be kinda dumb at times. I see the flash, i hit parry, they don't actually attack until after she's already attempted to parry and you can't spam it. Samus wont stay in her ball when you fall, but like you REALLLY need her to stay in morph ball form to get off a cross bomb the moment you roll off a ledge. This made it so much more difficult than it had to be. The shinespark is entirely too short. Like 8 seconds would have been solid. Speed boost conditions are wayyy too specific. Like the conditions have to be exactly right. One change and its ruined. But yeah. Great story. Fun time when I'm not having to spend 40 minutes honing my skills just to get +2 rockets or 1/4 of a health bar. The space jump is also busted. At times it works perfectly, other times she just refuses to do it and dies as a result. I understand there's a rhythm to it but like I'll do the rhythm and it refuses to work. I dont even see why they felt like it was necessary to restrict the ability to the rhythm. Like it could be rhythmic or not as long as we can get by easier who cares the choice should be there to do either. If you are willing to put on these metaphorical handcuffs and restraints on abilities then you'll enjoy yourself. Expand

Excellent controls, blissfully fluid and satisfying movement, challenging but fair combat, fun puzzle mechanics, wonderfully satisfying upgrades and devilishly clever level design. This game got me to go back and play all the other Metroids, and this led to me finally playing what is now one of my favorites of all time, Metroid Prime 1. My two cents on the difficulty: It is unbelievably refreshing to have a challenging, first-party Nintendo game and I don’t think the game would work the same without its level of challenge. I mean, the game is called “Dread”; you’re supposed to feel powerless. But having said that, you aren’t *actually* powerless. All boss attacks have clear tells and it feels so good to learn the patterns and mop the floor with them after learning. Checkpoints for bosses and enemy encounters are extremely generous, so it just feels like each death is another learning experience, and it feels SO incredibly rewarding to progress through this game as a result of the challenge. I think the difficulty level is perfect, and that’s coming from someone who’s never played more than an hour of a Metroid game before, and doesn’t have the design language or mechanical staples in their head. I really hope some of the game journalist reviews calling the game too hard don’t sway Nintendo for the next one. The fans love it! Expand

Pretty good Metroidvania that gets the basics of the genre right. My main complaint is the same as Doom Eternal. There are too many abilities to remember, and too many complicated controls. Press 2 buttons and you fire missiles. Press another 2 buttons and you launch a grappling hook. Press another 2 buttons and you turn into a ball and drop a bomb. It gets confusing.

The EMMI robot sections are awful. Like the worst stealth sections you've ever encountered x6. There are some great boss fights in Metroid: Dread that are dances of death like Hollow Knight, but then there are a lot of gimmicky boss fights that depend on using a grappling hook to hop around, or hit some weak spot. Overall, this game is still a lot of fun, and a fine addition to the Metroid series.

Metroid dread is the newest 2d metroid. The only unique new thing that is supposed to be the "dread" part is the kind of stealth and escape part when fighting against the emmi bots, for me it was kind of boring, you retry the emmi parts generally 1-10 times to find the correct path and then it's done, but I'm not a horror fan so I probably just miss that point; for the comparison I do find the bots in breath of the wild more menacing. The music and sounds are great. The controls are perfect, perhaps a bit tricky with triggers at times but in general if you make mistake it's on you and not bad controls. The boss fights are challenging but all have recognisable patterns to learn so it really is all about learning the boss patterns, rather than having lightning reflexes and good luck, which is one of the main point that sets it apart from poorly designed indie metroidvanias. That being said, the best part of the game is definitely exploring the world and discovering items and finding shortcuts and all that. They definitely have the metroidvania formula down, so that was pretty fun. The EMMI robots that stalk you around the planet were definitely scary, but i wish the stakes were a bit higher with them. When you get killed by one of the EMMIs, it’s kinda stressful n scary but the player isn’t really punished that much for dying. Art direction was good; storyline wasn’t all that deep but i mean it’s not really a story driven game so who cares.

An absolutely incredible game. Not my favorite Metroid but one of the best nonetheless. The controls, bosses, and sense of bad-assery are definitely the best in the series but everything else has been better in other Metroid games (music, atmosphere, story, etc.). A great game overall, with a few minor blemishes along the way.

First, this game 's combat is essentially a sequel to Samus Returns on the 3DS. It is 2D, and the melee counter makes a return. This is not in the vein of Metroid Prime. (3D FPS) Just because it is 2D doesn't mean it isn't complex; the combat has a lot of depth and a good, fair difficulty. Definitely have to learn some boss

Story wise, this is a sequel to Metroid Fusion and has a lot of callbacks to that game. If you are nostalgic for that game, this game will give you the tinglies. Definitely a bit of fan service here (which is a good thing.)

The game is relatively linear; even though you can explore, there is usually only one "correct" path at a time, and if you listen, the game will tell you. Some might be turned off by the lack of hand-holding though. Gameplay goes like: Find new power, go back to wherever that power was needed, rinse repeat. A satisfying loop. This game isn't super long either, I beat my first playthrough in about 6 hours. However, these games are EXTREMELY replayable, so that should add some value for the price tag. It's about quality and not excess quantity here; it isn't bloated like other metroidvanias in the genre.

The stealth sections are a mixed bag. On the one hand, they are fun and interesting at first. On the other, they become a bit tedious and not fun, especially the later ones. They aren't particularly "dread" inducing as you the game implies; the EMMI aren't scary and since respawns were so close I'd legit just let them kill me sometimes so I could reset the room. Thankfully, the game ended right as these wore out their welcome.

Overall, amazing game and a return to form utilizing the Switch hardware. This style of Metroid game is usually on a handheld so it looks and sounds a lot better here.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
