The EMMI sections are something fresh and really made my palms sweaty, for once your not the powerful one and have to escape and sneak around, often just barely making it through the exit in time.

I loved the bosses, first they seems impossible, after a while you're dodging and parrying everything they can throw at you.

Music, graphics and atmosphere are outstanding.

Sequence breaking of course is a thing in this game.

    CONS:

You're often locked in an area you're supposed to progress, when I thought I'd rather go back and get some items or explore somewhere else, before I want to progress.

No button remapping, colorblind mode, or other accessibility options.

If you struggle with complex controls and movements, or have trouble with staying orientated on a map, this game may not be for you.

You also probably should know what a Metroidvania type of game is, judging from other reviews here. Also, don't buy it if you can't handle dying and learing from your mistakes.

An absolutely brilliant return to form that fully embraces the series use of non-linear progression to craft a truly unique entry into the series. This game also features by far my favorite iteration of Samus, fully leaning into her badass charm, while also allowing her to have scenes where we see a much tender side to her character.

Very good game, beautiful graphics, great sounds and very addicted. It hooked me up since minute 1 of gameplay.

Expand

excellent game. Im not disappointed but there's a few things I wish they addressed. 1. Its not very self aware. Why doesn't Samus remark on how she alwayys loses her powers. 2. I loved the return to Super Metroid and I appreciated the game's simplicity. Like Super Metroid and a proper Metroidvania the exploration was the star of the show. Traversal was a highlight of my experience. Just moving through the rooms is satisfying. The game is just the right length. Something that a lot of developers get wrong. Many pride themselves on bigger is better and go open world.

    Cons

    A hidden move mechanic

I got stuck a couple times in the early game because it felt like a Mario boo house. When you’re stuck, shoot at the wall! The game says. Didn’t like that. It’s formulaic enough though to where you can learn what to expect, but still...Also, the developers put a lot of enhancements (though not required to beat the game) behind a complicated move mechanic that isn’t even mentioned in the game. And, to add insult to injury, they put that mechanic on the most breakable part of the joy-con. It was stressful to use the technique, fail, and try again a dozen times because I was worried I was harming the controller.

While the music doesn’t detract from the theme, it doesn’t carry much weight. Thankfully, the rainbow robots (why all the colors though?) pulled through. The E.M.M.I. put the dread in Dread. It was fun and satisfying to sneak around them until you could finally take them out. This is a very well made game because once you get some momentum, the game is really fun.

The items didn’t really add anything new to the game, but boss fights were fun enough to where I found myself mashing to shoot as fast as I could. The game looks fantastic and the controls are very satisfying to pull off. There are quality of life features too like the map marking where you found, but couldn’t reach, areas and or enhancements. Loading screens were put in spots that didn’t interrupt the immersion of the game. It’s a short game costing $60, but it gave me something that most Nintendo games don’t offer an adult: a challenge.

In summary, I don’t like games with guns. I don’t like platformers. I don’t like horror themes. But I like Metroid Dread and have no regrets.

The Metroid series officially, and finally, advances forward with a new main entry that builds on its entire history and then some! The story is subtle but tastefully visualized, the controls are extremely smooth, the visual design is a dream, and the bosses, while not letting up on the challenge, are so satisfying to finish.

Short and sweet. Following both Fusion's and Samus Return's steps, Dread is an even greater improvement of that formula.

Maybe the best Metroid ever! I’m a huge fan of the series, but this new iteration is something special. They truly nailed it! It’s not as much of a reinvention of the franchise as I had suspected it would be, for better or worse.

Mechanics: the controls here are maybe the tightest I’ve seen in any game. Everything feels responsive and exact. I only really found myself fumbling with the controls when during puzzles requiring very quick execution of the more advanced actions, which is fine because it’s intentional so. Overall, I was extremely pleased with how precisely and immediately Samus’ movements responds to input. The animations for Samus are fluid and much appreciated!

Upgrades: We saw the return of the series’ staples, as well as some really nice new gear. There were a few upgrades that I found lackluster, but still a very strong set. I appreciated that the very last major upgrade was the item that it was, rather than stacking the coolest gear at the end (as Prime 3 did).

Emmis: I really loved these things! They were genuinely thrilling to deal with, but didn’t feel totally unreasonable either. I did find on my second playthrough (switched to hard) that avoiding them had become too easy. It’s difficult to implement such an enemy, and still have them feel threatening, given how extremely maneuverable Samus is. So, given that, I don’t know how they could have improved them without compromising on making it cheap/unfair.

Environments: This is truly a beautiful game; the lighting and aesthetics are splendid. The water effects in particular stand out. Overall the mood and atmosphere of the environments are well developed and full, which is common in Metroid games. I did find that I never wondered where to go/what to do next, which was a bit disappointing, but probably necessary to aid newcomers to the series. Music is also very fitting.

Story: I quite liked it, although some of the choices made went against the grain for me as a long time fan.

Overall an excellent entry in a series that has set a very high bar! I’ve honestly never played a more flawless game: they got everything just right! Highly recommend.

A dense, tough as nails game. I was surprised as this is the sort of difficulty I’ve come to expect from indie studios, rather than the established ones. It is rather short and linear as recent Metroidvania goes, which is fine considering how intense the game is.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
