It's so good to see other studios doing something with the Mario name. This is a new refreshing take on the genre and a fun challenging game! There are more and more reasons each day for gamers to get a Nintendo Switch!

I got this game as a gift, grandma knew I like Mario and she thoughts it was Odissey. It was not Odissey, I told her, this is not the game I wanted. I started to play because I was bored, two days ago. I didn't stop until I finished every single challenge. I still can't believe a Nintendo game was developed by Ubisoft. It isn't Odissey, it's different, welcome back Nintendo Difference!

My only criticism of the game would be that you should be able to move your characters as far as they can move in a turn if you decide to only move a fraction of what they can. Only allowing one move per turn is ridiculous when I would otherwise have been allowed to move further.

The easiest way for me to describe how I feel about this game is that I am simply in love with it.

When I first saw this, I could NEVER imagine this game would work - or that I would be slightly interested in it. But after a couple of hours in, I can say that it's another fine example of a game that, alone, would justify a purchase of a Switch (along side with Zelda, Mario Kart etc).

But after a couple of hours in, I can say that it's another fine example of a game that, alone, would justify a purchase of a Switch (along side with Zelda, Mario Kart etc). Everything about this game is almost perfect: colorful graphics, fun characters, weird engaging story, perfect tactical gameplay, right amount of fun and challenge.

The game plays much like X-COM. You have to battle on a grid, making use of cover, higher ground, skills in order to beat the opponents. And don't be fooled by the cute package. This is NOT an easy game, by any means. Beneath the hood, Mario + Rabbids is a solid, SOLID, tactical, turn-based game that will offer lots and lots of hours of amusement.

This is a must buy for any Switch owner out there.

This game was surprisingly fun. As one who has enjoyed XCOM this is very close to it. Not sure however about replay value. Also the ending leaves too many questions. There is also when it sometimes freezes for a moment which was only bad when it made me get stuck in the floor. But overall this was great to play.

However, this doesn't mean it's not challenging. Some battles and boss encounters can require quite clever solutions and some tries, but it's never unfair or too hard. Also, it's fun to explore the 4 worlds searching for hidden chests and other collectibles.

The only significant flaw i would consider is that some puzzles can get a bit repetitive (too much block pushing...) and mostly are not over creative, but it's not annoying to the point to screw up the experience.

Best Switch game after Zelda. Play it!

It’s a stepping stone to bring Nintendo closer to it’s third party developers. The gameplay is simple yet intricate. Having the focus on movement rather than percentage shooting really helps make it accessible to more people that typically wouldn’t play a game like it. Performing a long attack with multiple dashes and a team jump and finishing it off with a critical hit is super rewarding. To top it off the game looks great and pairs perfectly with the soundtrack that rivals even the best Mario games. The pacing of the game does need some work, it slows down at world 3 which is the weakest level. However the boss fights are amazing. The world 3 final boss is fantastic and worth the price of the game alone. The customization is also great and gives you a easy to use skill tree with plenty of weapons. I do feel like some characters are far better than others. For example Rabbid Peach is vital to have in your party if you want the best odds. Also characters like Peach and Rabbid Mario have shotguns that can do good damage but you can’t have them near other party members or you're guaranteed to do team damage. The puzzles in between levels are fairly easy so it would be nice to have more of a challenge but that's just a nitpick. The game also froze up at times for no real reason. The story isn’t bad either and has a fun light hearted tone that works well with Mario and the Rabbids. It provides a far more in depth look into the Mario Kingdom than any other game before. Overall Mario+Rabbids is one of the best games of the year and a must have for the Nintendo Switch. Expand

Let me start by saying that I have never been a fan of tactical shooters. I played all of 15 minutes of XCOM before uninstalling it. It starts out very basic and let's you get a sense of how to move and shoot in combat. Then, as you begin to unlock character abilities, the depth grows, and the difficulty increases at a near perfect pace.

The Mario and Rabbids mashup is just so charming. I love both of these IPs and to see them brought together in such a nostalgic and thoughtful way is wonderful. Another element that I want to touch on is the fact that my girlfriend is enjoying the game every bit as much as I am. We're sort of in a competition to see who can finish first. We've had it since Tuesday, it is now Saturday, and we both have nearly 30 hours in. I want to stress how uncommon it is for mainstream video games to truly cater to both a male and female audience. Nintendo does this better and with more titles than any of its competitors, and that's important to me, because it shouldn't just be us guys that are catered to through this beautiful, immersive art form that is gaming.

For those that are finding the game difficult in later levels. I can tell you that if you fail a fight, take the time to really analyze how it played out and adjust your team accordingly, you'll be just fine. Look for those synergies that exist between different characters. Look at how the enemies group themselves and move. Rabbid Yoshi and Rabbid Mario's ability to force opponents to move, for example, works tremendously with Mario and Luigi's "Shoot on movement" abilities. I'm on level 3-8 now, and I've definitely lost a couple of fights, and restarted quite a few more to make adjustments, but i've never once felt like I didn't know what to do to overcome one of the fights once I had seen it and really thought through the combat.

The only reason I didn't give this game a 10/10 is because in the free-roam areas, movement can be a little wonky maneuvering around blocks and such. This becomes a bit frustrating when doing timed puzzles. But, it's far from game-breaking. I have never needed more than a few tries to get through any of the puzzles. Also, there are some "nice to haves" that aren't there. Like being able to see: if I move to this space, where will my weapon be able to reach" before you move.

Overall, this game is so well done. And, there absolutely is variety in enemy types, map setups, and strategies. Sometimes they'll throw an easy fight at you just to introduce a new type of enemy before you face them grouped with other types in a tougher fight.

I can't recommend this game enough to anyone who owns a Switch. Like I said, I was never a fan of tactical shooters, but not only do I love this game, I feel like it helped me to better understand the mechanics of a tactical shooter. Once I finish it, I might just go install XCOM again and give it another go. Who knows, i might just end up loving it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm sure this crazy crossover was not one most people would've seen coming back when the Switch was announced, but wow, was it ever great. To see the face of video games crossover with these goofy Rabbids was something else and that something else, was fantastic.

Let's get right to it; Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is a strategy rpg game centering around the heroic Mario, his brother Luigi, the fair Princess Peach and the loyal Yoshi. Along for the ride, four goofy Rabbids dressed as the four heroes. The story mainly centers around the heroes traveling across a strange, mashed up version of the Mushroom Kingdom with typical Rabbid antics going on around them, all in an attempt to return the Mushroom Kingdom to it's former, Rabbid-free state. Along the way, Bowser Jr, acts as their main antagonist, causing problems at every turn. It's not exactly an unfamiliar plot, but it isn't exactly the everyday plot either, not when the captive princess is traded in for a slightly unstable, super merging Rabbid.

Gameplay wise, each character has the same styled techniques; a primary and secondary weapon and two secondary skills. Everyone can dash into enemies for additional damage as well and use each other for team jumps to cover wider ground. What makes each character unique is their own twists on said abilities. Rabbid Mario and Rabbid Luigi have additional effects to their dash attacks, Mario can jump on enemies' heads during a team jump and Yoshi can ground pound to send a shock wave at nearby enemies. The team is incredibly diverse and has a lot of options for attack. At first, it can seem complicated, but once you start exploring and learning their abilities, it becomes much easier.

Once your in battle, that's when the strategy comes in. Stages usually consist of uneven ground, many blocks to act as shields and pipes to travel from one side of the map to the other. Enemies have their own unique skills that are very similar to the ones the heroes have. As the game progresses, the enemies gain more HP and stronger attacks, as one expects in progressive difficulty. However, it is that level of progressive difficulty that my only problem with the game has. The game only allows you to have a team of three and the limits are specific; Mario must always be on the team and the team must have at least one Rabbid. While the last two specifics are nothing to really bother about, it's the three man limit that can see problems. When the game throws large numbers of strong enemies, a team of three can get overwhelmed pretty fast. Numerous times have I lost levels because the enemies defeated me incredibly fast. Considering you get 8 playable characters, a team of four midway in the game would've seemed appropriate, but that wasn't the case. The amount of time between character recruits is occasionally long, with the last character being recruited midway into the final world. It's a bit of a bummer, but the three man team at all times proves to be my biggest problem.

Overall, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is an amazing game, but I'd only recommend it to people looking for a challenge, not a casual joyride. With many collectables, solid gameplay and hilarious moments, this game is definitely a Switch title worth getting, granted it doesn't get lost in an expanding library as time goes on.

Mario + Rabbids is a tactical-rpg adventure where the 30% is exploration and the 70% left are battles. The combat system is fresh and for me it was never boring. Every battle was a challenge and you needed to think wisely what to do in every situation. If you are afraid of the difficulty you shouldn't worry anymore, there is an option where at the start of every battle you can use an Easy mode where the enemies are weaker and your team gains more health points.

Discovering the collectibles is fun and I have to repeat myself, the MUSIC IS BEAUTIFUL.

In short: this is a quirky XCOM style turn based RPG that has the same mechanics that you would expect with the gimmics of the mario and rabbids franchise. The creators poured their heart into this and you can tell. Everything feels fleshed out and smooth. the composers did a wonderful job on the soundtrack, and ion a system, that at the time of this review, only had Disgaea 5 as another RPG, this is a very welcome addition to the system, and a game i will recommend right along with Breath of the Wild as a system seller.

While I ordered the game as soon as it was revealed, I wasn't so hyped until a couple of days ago. That day, I watched an Eurogamer (Spain) video talking about it. Then I started to get more and more hype, and I wasn't upset at all.

When I got the game, I opened the box and I was so happy because I saw a color paper in the slot above the cartridge. At first, I thought it was a user manual, but I realized they were just promotional content (one about the figurines, other about DLC). "At least, they included something" - I think now.

When I arrived at home, I tried to redeem the DLC code (it came with the box in GAME), but I got an error. Then I read the ticket and I saw it must be redeemed in the Ubisoft website for an actual eShop code (pretty useless, though).

So let's go to the main topic. I installed my DLC, I installed the day-one patch and I booted the game. I saw a couple of "long" load screens (with long referring to 10 secs each one) and then a cutscene played. It showed a room full of Nintendo stuff. Then a misterious person (I think it was a teen girl because of the voice and the few parts of the body I could see) appears and uses a misterious headset to fusion two things. When they leave the room, a washing machine appears with a ton of rabbids inside, and they start messing up all the stuff, so they mix some with stuff around the room, resulting in a Rabbid Mario, Rabbid Luigi, Rabbid Peach and Rabbid Yoshi. Another cutscene is played where they are teleported to the new Mushroom Kingdom along with the real Mario, Luigi, Peach and Yoshi.

Then starts the actual gameplay. The player has three characters to control, and the first ones are Mario, Rabbid Peach and Rabbid Luigi. Mario can't be changed for other character. The game itself starts being easy, but its learning curve is great so far. Features such as the skill tree or the differences between characters/weapons are presented later on; such as the ability to combat freely or to get secondary weapons.

The game's graphics are amazing, meaning that they're so beautiful and with some common points with Super Mario 3D World. It means that they're intended to be a way of art and not a way to show how powerful is the system the game is playing on.

Music is great too, at the level of every Mario game. Rabbids' noises are not annoying at all.

The Story is well done and the objective is clear since the beginning.

Resuming: the game itself is not childish at all. Graphics might seem too colorful and such, but the game has an interesting story and is way more difficult than people tend to believe. It has cooperative combats too, which are very fun; that means the game is perfect both for single player (the main mode) and multiplayer, very rare in this genre. Controls are very good, so it doesn't feel like playing a PC-oriented game of this genre with a standard XInput controller.

The graphics are beautiful, the soundtrack is amazing, the gameplay is simply addictive! Mario + Rabbids is a complete delight, and I honestly hope this becomes a series and paves the way for more creative crossovers between Nintendo's beloved characters and worlds and other different characters, franchises and genres!

Here is how I broke it down -

Graphics - 9.5 - Bright colorful, and very detailed environments
Story - 9 - The story so far so good -
Gameplay - 10 - So many things to offer but SIMPLE. The variety of ways you can attack is wonderful
Sound 9.5 - The music is great here with simple melodies, Wait till you get to ACT 3! Its the best!
Overall 9.5 - if you are fan of Mario and like strategy type of game this is the BEST! I think Disgaea 5 is a good turn base but environment, story, music, and game play put this as the one of the best Tactics/Strategy games ever!

In fact, I find myself looking forward to each new battle as I explore each world that is filled with secrets and puzzles to unlock. As I was playing I was reminded of my feelings when playing other Nintendo games of the past that tried something different using Mario and his friends like: Mario RPG, Mario and Luigi, Paper Mario etc....If you are a fan of Nintendo, heck if you like to have a blast and be entertained in your gaming, you need to pick up this little gem ASAP! A fun version, casual, pretty and dynamic of X-Com. The combos are great, the progression in the game is nice and the tactical part is well done. The best bonuses are to do damages with free action while moving, and also the secondary effects applied on the characters (bounce, honey...). A must-have on Switch.

And while I personally still hate the Rabbids quite a bit, this game manages to overcome some of the stupidity they bring to give the player a competent XCOM-lite experience.
Those who have played XCOM will be right at home with this tactical strategy shooter. Everything has been simplified quite a bit while retaining a bit of strategy that should satisfy most people. It's definitely nowhere near as hard as XCOM but it has its moments. And with quite alot to do, I can see how people will be going back to this for awhile here. However bugs and glitches, multiple ones that crashed the game for me, really keep this from being a very great game. I had multiple freezing issues from start to finish here both in TV mode and in handheld mode. Alot of slow down for most of the game really put a damper on the experience for me. Plus this game did nothing for me to even remotely start liking the Rabbids. And the writing and story are very clearly more suited for younger children and got extremely cringe worthy at times.
However all that being said, this is a good single-player experience for Switch owners desperately looking for one that's not BotW. I'd say it will definitely tide people over till Odyssey comes out in late October.

The amount of missions and activities that come with the game, without the purchase of DLC, are more than adequate, which is a relief. I was glad Ubisoft didn't gate off core features of the game and hold them for ransom. You're actually getting a full gameplay experience with the purchase of this title alone. It's got a really fun combat system, though I do wish it was just a little more challenging.

The game comes with approximately 40+ main missions, with another extra 40 challenges, and then there's the co-op missions, which are also fun, but there's not point in having another friend to do them with you since it's essentially just passing control back and forth between players, and you're not doing anything simultaneously, which is a little disappointing. In all, there's around 60 hours worth of content if you do all of the missions and challenges and co-op missions, in case the amount of content is important to anybody. Though I'd say only around 35 hours worth of that content is doing the truly enjoyable stuff combat related stuff, the other 25 is spent walking around the worlds, which is oftentimes amusing, and the puzzles are fairly okay. While exploring the worlds is amusing, I do wish it had been cut down significantly, since it really doesn't add a whole lot to the experience, and sometimes it's just downright tedious.

My only other complaint would be the little robot thing that guides you throughout your journey. I find it distracting, and I don't find it particularly funny or cute, aside from an occasionally clever line here and there.

Those fairly minor complaints don't detract from the fact that this game contains an incredibly fun and inventive combat system, and it does contain quite a bit of personality and humor. And there's also a sequence that contains what is possibly my second favorite opera singing boss fight of all time (Conker's Bad Fur Day contains the first)

    1) I hated the headquarters/base part of X-Com with researching, micro managing characters who could die permanently at any time etc. This feature has been stripped from Kingdom Battle completely and been replaced with an "open world" that you run around in between battles, solving puzzles and finding hidden areas and collectibles. This makes the game feel more cohesive instead of just throwing the player into a bunch of disconnected "arenas".

    2) The combat is a huge improvement. It's simplified yes, but not in a bad way. You always have 0%, 50% or 100% chance of hitting a target. If a target is out in the open, you will always hit. In X-Com you can fire at a target almost in front of you and still miss. I mean really, it feels like a slap in the face every time. In Kingdom Battle you're also free to choose if you want to attack first or move first. The added mobility of bouncing on friendlies to move further as well as dashing allows you to play much more aggresively. Not to mention special abilities which results in more varied gameplay than just moving and shooting.

Aside from this, the visual quality of the game is stunning and this game is definitely the best looking Switch game to date. If you like strategic turn based combat and Mario, definitely get this.

There was little things that hold it back from being great, a variety of items dropping in crates are mainly just music and statues, nothing to help in the game besides new weapons (which I thought were done well with the red coins) and some of the escort missions can get tedious. I like the simple blue puzzle cannon worlds and the camera switching didn't bug me as much. I thought one more world would have solidified the game, the first two words I thought were the best overall in design, and by time world 4 came around I was ready to be done because we got into the darker tone worlds which are never my favorite in Mario games.

The rabbids sometimes are funny, sometimes annoying, but not nearly as bad as I thought they would be. Loved the selfie stuff...who would have thought. Overall a fun game worth checking out. I see my self eventually going back to do some of the extra things. 80/100

Definitely a good game, but trust me when I say it's not what you would prefer with TB. It's refreshing for a Mario experience, but it's not even on the same level as a game like Persona 5. If you have already played that this year, this game will seem pretty easy in comparison too. But cheers for the Switch finally getting a game that wasn't on the Wii U first.

This is probally one of the best games to buy for the Switch this year. First thing is that this type of game is not for everyone. So, this game starts off as your a female that you dont really get to see but you see her room and it is a room I think I would of had as a child. Its just full of video game goodness and love and passion. Then the rabbids come in and you would think oh man these guys are going to be annoying and they are not at all. They bring tons of humor to this game and there are tons of nostalgic feeling throught this whole game with them in it. The game play its self is VERY challenging despite the cross over and the graphics looks like it will appeal to a child you will be very mistaken by how the the game plays. Its also not BAD challenging it actually makes you want to keep playing and learning. The mechanics are spot on and the environment is amazing not only is the levels hard but the exploration is hard at times with letting your explore but introduces puzzles in order for you to progress. I really need to express how amazing the soundtrack is and how bizarre and catchy it is. Also the music reacts to the game environments which just make it even better. The only negative I can say is I wish there was more in the explorations parts and more interactions with characters in the world of mario. When you see SPMRPG there are new characters and new people to talk to. I wish it had more like that. Instead its just a flushed out Mario World with theird characters and the rabbids just are there to have fun. I give this game a solid 9/10 and I really recommend it to anyone that has a switch. Gameplay is easy and also the graphics are amazing! Hard at times to complete because of how much you have to focus strategically on how to complete the level. Overall great game collaboration!

Excellent game. This is without a doubt one of the best turn based strategy game every created. And it came from ubi, contains mario and rabbids - who would've guess it could be so good? Of course it has its flaws like backtracking but hell it still deserves perfect score :) I was hesitating to buy this because i didn't believe this will really work - so if youre unsure just give it a shot!

The first one is this game shouldn’t exist, I can’t believe Nintendo allowed Ubisoft access to Nintendo’s flagship IP (intellectual property). I think this is a great sign and maybe Nintendo will be willing to let Nintendo characters be guest characters in other games. Regardless Rabbids and Mario are such a weird combination but here we are. The other shock is the game is good? A game with Rabbids is not only good but funny? I did not see that coming.

I hate to reduce the game by calling it a Xcom knock off but that’s kind of what the game is. The big difference to me is Xcom is much more frantic and chaotic where this is much more of a strategy game. Because the game is either 50% or 100%, it allows you to plan ahead and devise viable a strategy to beat every level.

Each level is kind of like golf where each hole is a par 3, 4, 5 or whatever. This game has a similar approach to the levels where each battle has “x” amount of turns to complete. If the battle is a par 3 and you do it in 3 turns then you’re rewarded with a little more experience so your cast of characters is a little stronger and little better. What this does, it encourages you to strategize and its almost as if it’s a fun puzzle to solve.

The game does have a story although it’s not the games greatest strength. It starts out with a young girl who appears to be a young genius and has created a device that melds things together. With her being a genius she’s also a Nintendo fanatic so she has Nintendo memorabilia all over her bedroom. When she leaves her bedroom, Rabbids appear out of nowhere in a washing machine, time machine thing. A Rabbid proceeds to put on her melding device and thats how Rabbids end up in the Mushroom Kingdom.

This when the game begins. You start out with Mario, Rabbid Luigi, and Rabbid Peach. As you play through the game, you unlock more characters like Luigi, Rabbid Mario, and Peach. Later on, you do unlock Yoshi and Rabbid Yoshi but it’s too late in the game for them to even make an impact. Of all the characters in the game, my favorite was Rabbid Luigi. With his vampire ability, I was able to do damage and keep the rest of my team healthy and alive.

There is one thing that I have to talk about and that’s about halfway through the game you fight a boss. He’s the Phantom Rabbid Boss and this fight is one my favorite moments of the year. He’s like an opera singer and what he sings about is basically him insulting Mario. I don’t want to get into specifics of what he says but man it’s so good.

Now that I’ve talked about the best part of the game (that boss), now I have to talk about a few complaints I have with the game. The game overstays its welcome, it’s a little too long. The first two worlds move along quickly but then the third world seems to take a lot longer and then the final world just felt like it took half the game to finish. It probably wasn’t that long but it felt like a long time. I eluded to this earlier but you get Yoshi and Rabbid Yoshi far too late in the game. By the time you get them, you’ve already come up with viable strategies and you’ve already put the resources into other units. In my opinion, you should unlock all of the characters by the end of the first world.

My recommendation for this game is to take it slow. Sit down and play for an hour at a time and play it for a few weeks. That way it won’t overstay its welcome. I do recommend this game and its one of my favorite games that I have played this year but its not something you want to mainstream in a couple days.

Mixing the crazy rabbids with Mario in a turn based grid strategy game is right up my alley.

Pros: - The dashing and pipe traversal made the grid based game much more interesting - Great graphics and angles never had a problem seeing the battlefield - Skill trees - especially being able to reset at anytime - were perfect - Boss battles and enemies were all well done - Super effects

    - Could of forced use of all characters at some point in the story to make you survive without your key members

I think this is the most Switch-spirit game so far. I love how the flow of the game works flawlessly between docked, undocked, on the sofa, in the underground, on the bed; creating a positive buzz as you feel you're more clever than some twisted rabbids. Strange and powerful at the same time.

Mario + Rabbids is one of the greatest spinoffs of the Mario franchise. It has a great soundtrack and a decent story. After spending 70 hours playing this game, I can tell you it is addicting, colorful, funny and sometimes pretty complex too. A few bosses are difficult to manage (and I love it). You cannot go wrong with this game, even if you are not familiar or turn-based combat.

A really good startegy Game for the Switch. I admit: I was sceptical when I first saw a Crossover with the Rabbits, but luckily it didn´t drag the Game down. If you like XCOM then you will probably get some enjoyment out of this Game.
Especially the presentation is genius. I usually play on a PC and use my Switch on the Go, and this is one of the few Games where 30 FPS aren´t bothering me

Overall, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle brings a welcome shot of vitality to the turn-based strategy genre thanks to interesting team mechanics and a colorful Nintendo theme that sets it apart from its contemporaries. Taking one of the biggest IPs in the world and marrying it to an all new type of gameplay was a huge risk that paid off wonderfully, and I’m glad that it finally found its way to my Switch. Now, bring me a sequel with a couple of needed improvements and 100% fewer rabbids, and we’re in business…

Mario + Rabbids is an incredibly welcome surprise. I assumed that a game starring Rabbids would become grating long before completion, but my fears turned out to be unsubstantiated. Beep-0 is a great lead character, and the Rabbids' hijinks are dialed back to a level that works. This is a fun take on a tactical RPG; the simplification of hit percentages worked especially well. The game isn't without fault — greater variety in characters and levels along with more meaningful customization would be welcome — but most of the issues are minor in comparison to how much fun the game is to play. Hopefully Mario + Rabbids marks the beginning of a new series and a sequel will take these ideas further.

Ubisoft acquired Nintendo’s license, added some Rabbids in the mix and entrusted the game to its Italian studio that never developed any large game on its own. What’s more, neither the studio nor both IPs had anything to do with tactical games. I still don’t understand how Kingdom Battle turned out so good. [11/2017, p.46]
