Aug 29, 2017Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is very charming and the whole aesthetic is perfectly executed. However, pesky gameplay shortcomings and a nasty difficulty spike halfway through hamper this Nintendo love-letter.

Jan 19, 2018Mario + Rabbids is an incredibly welcome surprise. I assumed that a game starring Rabbids would become grating long before completion, but my fears turned out to be unsubstantiated. Beep-0 is a great lead character, and the Rabbids' hijinks are dialed back to a level that works. This is a fun take on a tactical RPG; the simplification of hit percentages worked especially well. The game isn't without fault — greater variety in characters and levels along with more meaningful customization would be welcome — but most of the issues are minor in comparison to how much fun the game is to play. Hopefully Mario + Rabbids marks the beginning of a new series and a sequel will take these ideas further.

games(TM)Oct 6, 2017A challenging but repetitive tactical RPG. [Issue#192, p.72]

Sep 11, 2017That a crossover as bonkers as Mario plus Rabbids by way of XCOM even exists is to be celebrated, and fortunately it's an absorbing title that's only slightly diminished by some simplistic cover mechanics.
-
Aug 30, 2017Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle has lots of charmingly frivolous things to think about and it’s easy to collapse into its world of tactical antics because its gameplay is so absorbing.
-
Nov 14, 2017This rollercoaster ride of a turn-based strategy game starts out almost impossibly strong, but by the end I mostly wished it'd been over three hours earlier.

Aug 28, 2017It's hard to believe that throwing two disparate, popular franchises into a completely new genre works as well as it does. Believe it, though: Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is a fun and engaging introduction to the tactical RPG genre that can please neophytes and veterans alike.

Aug 28, 2017This wonky crossover is the unlikely source of a superbly designed tactical combat challenge as well as a charmingly silly adventure. [Recommended]

Aug 28, 2017Mario + Rabbids is way better than it has any right to be.
-
Sep 7, 2017It’s fascinating to see Kingdom Battle put Mario on a pedestal as an unmistakable piece of pop culture and somehow merge him into a surprisingly exciting strategy game.
-
Aug 28, 2017It’s easy to go into Mario + Rabbids with low expectations. It’s a mashup that doesn’t seem to make much sense, in a genre that feels counter to Super Mario’s playful spirit. But you should definitely look past the crazed, Rabbid-infused exterior. Mario + Rabbids isn’t just a great strategy game brimming with charm and clever ideas. It also joins the likes of Breath of the Wild, Arms, and Splatoon 2 in showcasing the best the Switch has to offer.
-
Sep 2, 2017Its battles have that crucial ‘one more go’ element that will make long journeys breeze by (battery permitting), and while its writing may leave something to be desired, once you properly get into all the permutations of the combat system you’ll be hooked. Roll on the new Season Pass levels.

Aug 28, 2017I'm here to tell you Kingdom Battle is a hell of a game, a strategy RPG with more in common with Fire Emblem than XCOM, one that wraps a satisfying turn-based combat game—featuring surprising depth to its systems and mechanics—in the approachable accessibility that's come to define modern Nintendo games...I'm as shocked as you are, but more than 10 hours later, I can't put the game down.
