I was super surprised at how good this game ended up being. I feel like its simplification of the XCOM formula was a super good decision - I was never lamenting the times that I missed a 90% shot, and instead I had a lot more precise information to work with and thus planning out each turn felt a lot better.

there's a real good game here deep down inside, but the rabbids ruin a lot of it. they're loud, annoying and smelly and no one likes them. should have been mario + rayman instead

I think the issue with the game is the fatigue associated with the length of the game, you unlock more characters will do have unique traits, you unlock more weapons which match the enemy levels, but the strategy largely remains the same from start to finish. No leveling up, no experience, no skill trees that actually add complexity, it just feels like you’re doing the same thing against new enemy types. I also did not like the long orientation phase of the game, the first 25% felt to be so easy that it was almost getting boring. With those complaints aside, it’s actually a fun and pretty challenging game once you get far enough. It has a lot of personality and character. A crossover that nobody asked for, but I will definitely pick up the sequel on release to give them an opportunity it’s to build on it. Expand

Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle a strange tactical game a la X-Com or Final Fantasy tactics. Some crazy experiment happens in the Rabbids world to merge it with the Mushroom Kingdom. Some crazy experiment happens in the Rabbids world to merge it with the Mushroom Kingdom. You move around a pseudo Mushroom Kingdom going from battle to battle that I guess will fix the world. Except it's extremely weird. I give it points for innovation in places, but the game is very no frills with some decent mechanics.

    Pros:

-Combat can be fun, but is rigid due to how specialized each character is. Some maps are very hard without certain characters.
    -The music is great
-Interesting new mechanics for a SRPG, like unlimited movement in a given area, dashing into enemies for damage, using a team jump to clear status ailments or mover further, ect.
    -Large amount of overall content
-The challenges are more fun than the regular levels
-Boss fights are challenging and a lot of fun
    -Really neat weapon designs
    -Game encourages thinking about problems
-Only experienced a few crashes, relatively stable and I didn't notice any bugs outside of the crashes.

    Cons:

-Forced to use a Rabbid for some reason. The Mario characters are no more powerful than the Rabbids and no less either, just slightly different. Why is the player forced to use one?
-No map available while exploring, have to return to the hub to view the map. This is very tedious and frustrating when trying to simply find the next level or all of the challenges, ect.
-Game is very basic with skill trees that are mostly passive bonuses. Very clear over/under tuned abilities in the tree.
-Only about 5 different main enemy types + bosses.
-Game is very easy or very hard, depending on your weapon level and characters used, it's ridgid
-In game world puzzles are awful and cliche. Should have been axed entirely. Also, once you complete puzzles, they're sill active, so some you must navigate every time you pass through an area and without an easily accessible map it can be very frustrating
-The writing is very...European? It's bad and not funny. You will not be interested or forget why you were doing this to begin with. The writing does not fit AT ALL with what you would expect from a Nintendo game (in a bad way) the Roomba character swears all the time (bleeped out of course), Mario characters talk completely out of character, ect. Most of the game your running along hitting a to occasional what zany thing the Rabbids got into. It's incredibly boring and not funny. It's like, "oh look at this Rabbid that's sitting there, I wonder what he is thinking?" ZzZzZzzz...
-Visuals very basic, likewise with animations. Many maps lack verticality (despite talents for it) and the maps are all large open area connected by pipes with slightly different themes and very little non destructible cover. It gets boring to look at in-stage. Non destructible full cover might as well not exist later on, not that it really matters later on. The game is very kill now or be killed, save boss fights.

If you can find your way around the maps, deal with the bad puzzles, ect., there's a fun game in there sometimes. I probably wouldn't have kept playing if I didn't enjoy tactics games and this game didn't enjoy some of the mechanics. For most I would wait until the game drops to $20-$30 if you want to try it. It's not that fun or worth most peoples time. Thank you.

There is some humor and the Skill Trees are really well made, but not even the graphics feel good, at least not when compared to Odyssey(a Real Time game) or even Super Mario Galaxy. When you got a strategy game where you can spend hours in a battle, but in the last turn when everything you planned had gone perfectly, the enemy just gets a random status that causes him to run away. There is literally a enemy that teleports to a random spot in every turn, and every shot has a chance of hitting. Expand

However, the difficulty spike encountered at the halfway point is a big point of frustration, as is the disappointing amount of glitches, including some that can send you back to the beginning of levels beyond your control. A little more polish would’ve gone a long way here. Expand

When I do a review I try to write a well thought out piece detailing each and every aspect of the game (which I still will do here). With Mario titles though, it really just comes down to if the game hits all the tropes needed. Mario? check! Luigi? check! Goombas and koopas in the game? Triple check! Rabbids? Check?

When I do a review I try to write a well thought out piece detailing each and every aspect of the game (which I still will do here). With Mario titles though, it really just comes down to if the game hits all the tropes needed. Mario? check! Luigi? check! Goombas and koopas in the game? Triple check! Rabbids? Check?

Now there is no doubt someone(s) have already made the "Minions" comparison here and, well, pretty much everywhere else. Are they minions? Yes, does it work here? For about 30 minutes. I don't hate the rabbids, but after a bit they just become the same tired mass enemy trope over and over.

For a strategy combat game it gets rather dull within about an hour. No matter how many Z axis shifts and dimensional changes that come with progression, you are dealing with the same elements over and over. Not only that, but each world is more of a primer tutorial for what will eventually be the end part of the world itself (piecemeal introductions of enemy types and terrain for the area with all those elements coming into play right before that world's final boss).

The never-ending, never-changing collect-o-thon element is here as Nintendo cannot muster the will to move past this tired and excruciatingly tedious trope. Sure collection of items and side mission items are in every game, but ALL Nintendo games are this. Weapons, music, game art, and the neverending backtracking are here. Maybe because I am older now, but I really don't care about side items or trophies. Batman: Arkham City broke me I guess. I just don't care, and that makes a lot of Nintendo's catalog pointless to me.

Still, the game is funny, bright and the music is really good. The music is almost too good for this title, but it is welcomed nonetheless. Team dynamic means fairly little, you can run nearly every fight with the same group (with just a few that you need specific members).

Is it worth a buy? Honestly, you could pass on it. There are a number of titles out for the switch right now more engaging and Mario Odyssey right around the corner. It's good for what it is, but not needed for everyone's collection

The UI seems unpolished, and when going from Console mode to portable mode, the game doesn't recognize the joycons (It continues to be played with the pro controller, however the menu works with the joycons) The gameplay itself is simple enough and there isn't much to think about when battling, so if you're expecting a challenge, I'm sorry to say this isn't your kind of game, it's better off played as a fun diversion than a strategy game. Either way, it's a solid game, and if you're hungry for more Mario (or Rabbids) give it a shot. Expand

CAUTION: MARIO + RABBIDS: KINGDOM BATTLE is a shallow kids title. No real diversity to the levels or any sense of progression. If you were expecting any of the Nintendo depth; look somewhere else. Kirby golf on the snes or mario party or mario tennis on the GC are better titles with more depth. Major disappointment,

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mario+Rabbids starts off as what seems like an XCOM clone with a Mario/kid-friendly skin and more simplistic controls and battles, and for the most part, that's what it is. At the start of the game after a few battles, honestly this game was an 8 for me, maybe even a 9, which is pretty damn good. All the way up until you unlock Peach at the end of the second World. This is where the score just tumbles on downward. But first, let's start with the positives.

    Pros
Gameplay: The biggest selling point to a game for me is the gameplay, and man is M&R a fun game, if you like strategy. Some of the weapons are just so powerful and wiping out a whole group of opposing rabbids with one shot is always a great feeling.

Visuals/Music: While I've never cared for graphics as a main selling point, the polish on HD Nintendo games has been fantastic which holds true on every major Switch title, M&R being no exception. On top of that, no one can deny Grant Kirkhope's genius at composition. While some of his influence can be heard from his earlier works like Banjo-Kazooie, it never came off as bad or not catchy in some way. My personal favorite has to be the midboss song.

Dialogue/Humor: The musical at the end of World 3, Bowser Jr saying he has suppressed daddy issues, Toad/Toadette, even the playable Rabbid characters are actually all really hilarious even to a 26 year old. Kids won't understand all the humor though so some of it will be lost on them.
However, there's ONE character that was actually annoying more than funny, but more on him later...

Now for why I gave this game a lower score than it should have gotten:

    Cons
Forced Team Compositions: Mario cannot be removed from the party, and he's okay but nothing special and nothing you want forced on your team, which is fine but then they force another stupid decision on you which is you MUST have a Rabbid on your team. Now, I know the bandwagon of hating on the rabbids but honestly they're really not that bad, and for actual characters, I rather like two of them (Rabbid Luigi and Rabbid Mario), but when they force that on top of forcing Mario on your team, this results in way less team comps than you'd rather like. Instead of getting to experiment with a Sniper (Luigi), an amazing Healer/Support (Rabbid Luigi), and a melee juggernaut (Rabbid Mario), I'm forced into pretty much the same team comp every time. They basically deny you free reign of experimentation. That said, you also don't get Rabbid Yoshi til halfway through World 3 (over half the game) and I haven't even seen Yoshi yet and I just started World 4.
PS: This alone took off at least a point from my score.

Game's Length: I just made it to World 4 and the game's already telling me I'm over 75% of the way there, which leads me to believe there's only 4 worlds and maybe a final short level/boss. For a AAA $60 title, this is quite pathetic in terms of length. Sure there's some challenge levels but that doesn't excuse having such a short campaign. Why do that? OH THAT'S RIGHT, they sold a stupid season pass with this game, didn't they? Good ol' Nintendo letting UbiSoft take the reigns on content.

BEEP-0: A huge negative for me has to be the annoying-as-all-hell robot companion that 'leads' your party in the exploration segments. This condescending piece of scrap metal is quite possibly my least favorite video game character in existence. He's rude yet makes tons of awful puns. He's a huge idiot but has an awful ego. He tries to be interesting but comes off as the person in a group of people you really don't want to hang out with. Whoever wrote BEEP-0 really needs to be fired because his lines alone make me cringe. I know this is more a game for kids than grown adults but I can't recall a single line of his that I laughed at or appreciated. I could easily go on for an hour about how bad he is.

Collectibles/Treasures: While this isn't a huge gripe, collectibles in the game is my last annoyance. There's plenty of small puzzles and stuff to do and tons of (not-so-hidden ) treasure chests to open. Some of them have Power Orbs which are basically "Skill Points" to use for the (really short) skill trees that are semi-unique to each character, but 95% of them are collectibles for the Museum, which is art, music, etc, things that should just unlock over time. They added puzzles just for the sake of adding puzzles and adding really crappy rewards in. I'm fine with Art and Music being side unlocks but not to doing puzzles in the game for them. Hell, even make an art book, I'd probably buy it for my collection. Also when you finally do get a weapon, it's usually a miniscule upgrade for the same price as your current one. It's such a crapshoot.

If you're okay with the forcing of Mario and a Rabbid on your team, okay with the short duration, all of the above, the game's still fun and you should buy it.

Of course, it’s not as complex as either of 2K games excellent titles but the variety of unlockable actions, and the way in which they can be combined, along with a good variety of enemies to fight ensures the gameplay is still suitably deep and entertaining.

Perfect for anyone that wants to dip their toes into the world of tactical RPGs!

I'll admit, the game is unexpectedly fun, and while the main gameplay is pretty much just "X-Com" with Mario & Rabbids, it feels different enough to be enjoyable to an extent.

To begin, the first cutscene shows how the Raving Rabbids found their way into Mario's colorful, happy-go-lucky world. And as anybody who's heard of these annoying creatures, the Rabbids begin to wreak havoc across the Mushroom Kingdom. And so it's up to Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi and their Rabbid Cosplaying-Counterparts to save the day.

The main gameplay is an RPG, again, similar to X-Com. However, their are some parts of the game that require puzzle-solving skills to move onward, giving you a break from battling. While these puzzles may be challenging, the rewards aren't so worth it to hurt your brain over, unless you love looking at 3D Dioramas of the characters in the game, go crazy.

The main hub-world, Princess Peach's Castle, is a bit confusing once you pass the first few chapters in the game. You've got buildings scattered across Peach's lawn that the Rabbids built, and while the contents of these buildings are useful, the buildings themselves are virtually useless since you can already change your weapons and characters before the start of any battle.

That's Story Mode, no let's talk Multiplayer. It was actually much more fun to battle against my friends than to play and adventured filled with slow-paced puzzles and useless rewards. Their's not really much else to talk about the Multiplayer option.

Overall, it feels weird (and wrong) to see the Raving Rabbids and Super Mario on the same screen. But if you can ignore that (which I can't) then maybe you'll enjoy this game. As for other stuff such as graphics and music are mediocre, but as for the main gameplay of the combat system is a blast.

Maybe I just don't like X-COM. This game was a bit of fun (the humor), a lot of boring (normal fights), and some frustrating (hard fights). It also didn't feel like they did a very good job of introducing you to all the various game mechanics. I got through the first major area (fought the first major boss). I don't keep many games, I always trade them in but this one remains firmly in the collection. And I trade a lot of games.

I try this game when Nintendo make it available on Nintendo Online for free. I reached the first two levels, and I found pretty fun. As an strategic game is not a difficult game, but it challenging enough to go through

This game is hard. Like REALLY hard. The gameplay is absolutely insanely hard and only for die-hard strategy fans. Don;'t treat this game like your average Mario platformer or even the RPG spin-off. This game will kick you in the balls time and time again, and is defiantly not for younger players or even adults. However, the game was obviously meant for children as there is a ton of bathroom humor, rude jokes, and the abundance of the proto-minions known as the Rabbids, annoying rabbits who are infuriating both to watch and ESPECIALLY to listen too. However, the Rabbid's insanity factor has been heavily toned down from the previous rabbids game, Rabbid Party U and it's tie-in TV show Rabbids Invasion. Overall, I'll are this a crazy frog X-Com mod skin. It's annoying , obnoxious, and is irrelevant and a dead meme paired with a nearly impossible game for only the most hardcore of strategy fans. My first strategy, and like it! A lot of combination and cool humour. Very good performance.

This game definitely isn’t engaging enough to just sit down and beat. But again, there really isn’t character development and there really isn’t story, it’s just fun to play a bit like Tetris or something. As an RPG in kinda fails in that regard. Still really good tho Expand

One of the few games I have played on Switch. Fun, for sure. I am a big XCom fan and it definitely hit that vibe but the setting and characters are not ones I particularly relish.

The strategy battle game is really good, 8.5/10. My only issues with that are the lack of complete camera control and the tedious bosses that involve silly stages of processes and them getting all their life back instead of making an interesting fight with a smart powerful enemy. It's like, nah, let's just make it take a long time by giving them their life back a couple times. But still,The strategy battle game is really good, 8.5/10. But I'm giving it a 6/10 because of the awful 3D map and puzzle they added on top of an excellent game. It all looks nice, but it's tedious and pointless and is only there to make the campaign take longer. I haaaaaaaaaaate every second of that stuff. I would love to smack whoever made the decision to do that, one full power stink palm slap to the face for ruining the hard work of all those people with a bad direction choice.

The people that gave this a 10/10 shouldn't take part in this website because they aren't critical thinkers and must give 10/10 to everything because it has huge flaws. Maybe play the game for a while before writing a review.

I wish I could give this game a better review score. This game is awesome, with great visuals, storytelling, cutscenes and turn based gameplay. The details they added in the world are great too, a love letter to the Mario franchise, very well made in this regard. BUT the game keeps crashing, and it has a lot, A LOT of bugs. Thankfully I was able to finish story mode, but now, everytime II wish I could give this game a better review score. Graphics are amazing especially on OLED
    Artstyle and music is great
Gameplay (combat) is a mixed bag. On one hand, it's a simplified strategy game with its own charm and unique touch. On the other hand battles (especially in the second half of the game) get unnecessarily hard, have annoying enemies (with high RNG crits), or straight up boring (escort missions....). Gameplay (exploration)

The world, animations and characters are all incredibly charming. But the core gameplay does leave a lot to be desired.

Strategy is one of my favorite genres so I was excited when I first heard about the game. Turned out to be a slight turn off. It can be fun at times but it's too easy, short and souless. If the sequel improves the depth of the game by maintaining the natural and easygoing fun that comes with Mario and Rabbids games, it could be a good game.

Overall, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle brings a welcome shot of vitality to the turn-based strategy genre thanks to interesting team mechanics and a colorful Nintendo theme that sets it apart from its contemporaries. Taking one of the biggest IPs in the world and marrying it to an all new type of gameplay was a huge risk that paid off wonderfully, and I’m glad that it finally found its way to my Switch. Now, bring me a sequel with a couple of needed improvements and 100% fewer rabbids, and we’re in business…

Mario + Rabbids is an incredibly welcome surprise. I assumed that a game starring Rabbids would become grating long before completion, but my fears turned out to be unsubstantiated. Beep-0 is a great lead character, and the Rabbids' hijinks are dialed back to a level that works. This is a fun take on a tactical RPG; the simplification of hit percentages worked especially well. The game isn't without fault — greater variety in characters and levels along with more meaningful customization would be welcome — but most of the issues are minor in comparison to how much fun the game is to play. Hopefully Mario + Rabbids marks the beginning of a new series and a sequel will take these ideas further.

Ubisoft acquired Nintendo’s license, added some Rabbids in the mix and entrusted the game to its Italian studio that never developed any large game on its own. What’s more, neither the studio nor both IPs had anything to do with tactical games. I still don’t understand how Kingdom Battle turned out so good. [11/2017, p.46]
