For me, the original was 10 out of 10 game and this one is no different. It's exactly the same experience. The only thing that bothered me was lack of 60 fps. I did come across uncommon frame rate dips when during sequences with a lot of particles and lighting effects while hoards of demons were attacking me, but only in those few arenas where there were a lot of particle effects. I've also heard complaints about how playing in handheld mode is difficult because the joy cons are fairly small, though I have fairly small hands, so it worked extremely well for me, I even preferred playing it on the go, but if you have larger hands, you might have the same trouble I've heard other people had. This is an easy 10/10 and i would even consider playing it twice, the soundtrack was phenomenal and the game never had me bored. Occasionally some parts would become slightly repetitive but none the less for me it never became boring to kill demons.

This makes quite a change from Mario! I've never played Doom and don't own other consoles so to my mind this is a much welcomed mature title. It plays great, looks great (good enough for me), satisfying weapon progression and is a must buy if you don't mind a high adrenaline, other-worldly gore-fest.

    Good stuff.

Doom doing what Doom does best. Run & gun and highly entertaining. Thoroughly enjoyed the playthrough and the game is long enough to keep entertained for a while. Large levels mean they will keep you entertained and with regular checkpoints, it doesn't become too cumbersome repeating the same areas over and over if death occurs.

Doom is probably my favorite fps game ever made, there's nothing to complain about as it does a fantastic job of not taking itself seriously and just focusing on the gameplay. The switch port looks great still even though its massively downscaled and runs at half the framerate of the other console versions and it still controls well in handheld.

The game can only be played in short spurts because of the thick atmosphere that overwhelms the player, and the action that never stops. This makes DOOM perfect for the Switch, because you can easily find a secret or kill a few enemies if you have 5 minutes to play. The deep atmosphere was genuinely scary and creates fear and discomfort. The Switch also runs the game fine enough. 30 fps was fine, and textures looked perfectly acceptable given how quickly you move at all times. In my entire play-through, the game only slowed down once, when the game froze for .5 seconds. Expand

Tense brutal shooter. Runs smoothly, lovely graphics and the soundtrack is typical doom with the bass thumping it just adds to the experience.

I liked the online mode more than i expected, i found it entertaining and that's all.
About the switch port, it's unbeliavable that a game such as Doom can run on a NSW so well. Of course it doesn't look so good like in the others platforms... However, Panic button did a great job. The only problem i find remarkable in this version is the lack of a level editor, which was very amusing to play.

Doom is so close to being perfect on Switch. The latest patches have really helped the frame-rate hit a smooth 30fps. Of course, it does not look as good as on PC, PS4 or XBOX, but that really does not matter, because it still looks good. I played this game from start to finish in handheld mode, and there are many highs and a couple of lows, which can be patched in the future.

OK, let's tackle the elephant in the room:

    PERFORMANCE and GRAPHICS.

No, this is not as shiny as PS4 and PC, but you need to see this game in handheld mode in person. And no, it certainly does not hit 720p in handheld, despite what the devs tell you. I have played too many 720p games in handheld mode to tell the difference...

However, it looks pretty damn good in handheld mode. You will be going holy sh*t every two seconds because the game looks dope in handheld mode. Lighting, creepy atmosphere, sparks, explosions, towering bosses (TWO ONLY, unfortunately) look great in handheld mode. The best AAA game you have seen on a tablet yet without question!!

Framerate is where this game sometimes suffers (heavy firefights are a huge culprit), at least for now. I played it on ULTRA-VIOLENCE, and when things got hot, it was like the engine got dipped in molasses. Digital Foundry blamed it on frame pacing, and claimed it could be patched, so there is that. However, those slowdowns don't occur in all scenarios, it is just something to note in case you are super sensitive to frame drops.

There is also a weird glitch that makes doom guy not move at full speed when strafing to the left sometimes, as if he hit a wall. This leads to a lot of deaths and can happen at random, so watch out!

Another annoying glitch is the sound cut-off glitch. It can be fixed by a checkpoint reload/restarting the game, so yeah. That sucks, but not a deal breaker as it happened to me a few times.

    Gameplay

Don't let 30fps stop you from getting this. This game at 30fps plays very well. Not as well as 60fps obviously, but I was pleasantly surprised with how I was absolutely destroying demons IN HANDHELD MODE!! Jesus, there are no words to describe how awesome this game plays, just try out a friend's copy or something, this game is off the chain on Nintendo Switch!

Before you try handheld mode, try my analog settings and hopefully you will be a demon slaying machine on-the-go:

    HORIZONTAL SENSITIVITY - 14%
    VERTICAL SENSITIVITY - 14%
    LOOK SMOOTHING - 70%

    Story

Story is meh. If you want story, play a Telltale game. Or else Doom Guy will curb-stomp you like an imp.

    Multiplayer

Some people say they enjoyed it, but not me. Probably because visually and frame-rate wise it performs kinda lame (IN HANDHELD MODE). You could check it out in TV mode, but it just did not interest me in the slightest. But hey, you may like it, so go ahead and see.

    Arcade Mode

More demon slaying, so it probably is good. I haven't tried it yet, but seeing how the campaign gameplay was solid, I have no doubt arcade will be lit as well.

    Conclusion

Congrats to Nintendo, Bethesda and Panic Button for getting this game on the Switch. It makes for a powerful statement to the gaming community, as well as gives us fans the much needed 3rd party support.

Just checked out L.A. Noire, and that game is looking sweet as well. I suppose my prayers were answered, and now my Switch is doing exactly what my Vita should have done 5 years ago...

    8.5/10, because Metacritic hates in-betweens!!

Doom for the switch defies the stigma of portable gaming. Up until now the idea of a fast paced, screen full of frenzy on a portable device would be something most wouldn't believe. But Doom defies that and although there are some limitations, it is a HELL of a good time. The questions everyone has is; does look, run, and feel the same as the console generation. For the most part yes. Sure the visuals can a bit blurry but this is a taxing game. There is a lot going on and it all happens quick. Gameplay wise you can expect that same fast hellish gunplay. If your new to this version of Doom I highly recommend giving it a shot. Campaign, Multiplayer, and challenge modes give players more then enough to chew. My biggest recommendation would be to utilize the Pro Controller as this game is extremely demanding and the joy cons wont give you that sense of comfort when dealing with hoards at an alarming rate. Overall, Switch owners should be very pleased with what Doom brings to the table and be optimistic for what this means for other big name games and developers.

it runs pretty well on the switch but does have a few hiccups in some of the more densely packed parts of the singleplayer campaign, still not that much of a bother. the fact that you can take this amazing game on the go is just mind-blowing to me and I personally think the full price of the game is worth it, however if you have played this before or have a different system I would like to remind you that it's there, looks slightly better and has a cheaper price tag.

I only recommend picking it up on the switch if you have not played it before, don't have access to another console version of the game or if you want some portable demon destruction on your system

I love DOOM's fluidity and brutal sense of humor. Something as simple as shoving a demon's foot down its throat is both awesome and hilarious - and it never gets old (at least not yet).

My only real issue with the game is that there were a few parts where I'd get lost. This could be in part because the objective-guider HUD is super tiny in handheld mode (and the map menu is kind of rigid and confusing to figure out). My only issue with the port is that there's this annoying glitch that makes menus impossible to navigate with your D-pad and left toggle. It's only occurred once for me - and the fix is as simple as restarting your system - but it's still something that should be looked into and patched.

I already gave up playing shooters because all are like "hide behind a stone and heal". Not with doom cause medipacks, armor and reflexes are needed here.
And I have really less spare time with 3 children. So, all I want is to play and this version fits all my needs and makes a lot of fun.

Wow. You wouldn't think the Switch could run this game at all, but it does. Kill demons on the subway!

This port (along with Skyrim and the upcoming Wolfenstein 2) opens so many doors, legitimizing the Switch as a real console to developers that will now think twice before skipping a Nintendo version. The Switch can run fully-fledged games in both docked and handheld mode, better than a lot of people's computers can. If all it takes is slight technical downgrades to port a game to the Switch, the answer is "yes please". Hats off to Bethesda for having faith in Nintendo's system, this is a triumph.

I had the game up on a shelf since I bought it and now, with this patch, I can finally play the game properly. I've been playing it for 2 days straight now. I can't tell you how fun this (simple) shooting/smashing game can be and to have this on a portable device is just perfect.

    Old review:
First shooter game on Switch without gyro aiming. It think that for 60$ for an old game that you can get for 15$ on other platforms would pay more than enough for a small update to add this feature. This makes me shoot all over the place, waste ammo and levels take twice as much to clear. I have games on the DS that have gyro aiming, wth !? I got used to it using gyro on Steam controllers and all the other shooting games on the switch, it's just annoying for me to know that I could do way better with the gyro. I just can't seem to play the game for more than 20 min without getting angry. Bethesda, update the game and activate the freaking gyro. I play games to have fun, not to get angry. For me it's almost unplayable without the gyro. It might be a 10/10 game, but not on the switch, not without gyro. 30FPS is more than enough and It looks good.

The downgrade is quie substantial as to be expected...and in docked mode its pretty awful and blurry...digital foundary did a performance test on the game...and the resolution drops as low as 300p in places. The framerate is ok sometimes, but the irregular latency between frames makes it pretty choppy....when you don't want it to be, ie when its frantic.
Thirdly, paying 60 dollars for a game I can play on my xbox one x in 4k 60fps, for 40 dollars is frankly a rip off. why do Nintendo do this? its the same with skyrim, which just looks like the xbox 360 version. skyrim se was released on xbox one for 50 dollars, and its fully remastered WITH mods!
Doom is still fun on the switch, but people are saying its like some miracle to get a good portable fps....well I guess they never played dead ringer 2 on android on the shield tablet. or skyrim on the gpd win handheld (which costs 20 dollars and has mods)

Once again, say it with me, "do you have Doom from pc or any other console before? Then don't bother because this is both the worst version you can get and the most overpriced one to boot: this game is NOT worth the 60 buck asking price.

But if you never got doom before...well that's much difficult to answer: the game itself is objectively the worst version of all console ports but it's still quite amazing on how they managed to make it run without too many issues. Yes it's downgraded but for good reasons and It's really hard to judge it: they managed to make a massive game like doom work on a switch and that's really commendable.

I mean sure it's a console port of a pc game and you'll have the usual issues with the sticks but that's expected from a console versions: you can't expect the smoothness of a pc and you can't even plug an usb keyboard and mouse to make it work properly (or else it wouldn't be nintendo).

Too bad they still **** up in two ways: the game STILL requires a download (about 8gb) for multiplayer and other content features that will snatch away your already poor memory of the switch because nintendo didn't think of adding an internal SD or memory to help with data, that would be too freaking logical. Screw the ps4 or xbone with their 1tb of storage: 25gb is all you need and if you want more spend hundreds of bucks for a measly 128gb memory update. TOTALLY BETTER!

But what kills it is the price point...I'm sorry but 60 euros for a nearly 2-year-old game, a game you can literally find anywhere for cheap, a game I spent 7 bucks on steam to buy and literally has everything you can ask (including the snapmap, which is missing on the switch), and they DARE to ask us full price again? Of course I can't recommend it: if this came out together with other versions I would say otherwise but I simply CANNOT recommend a fully price port of an old game.

And no, the portability is not a reason enough to be worth the price because if I have to be a mean bastard I can reply with "buy a portable computer and get doom on it: even on low setting it will look much better than the switch version. And you can even hook a keyboard and mouse!"

So, to put it simply, the game is a real marvel in terms of technicalities and I simply couldn't ignore that, but it's the price point that makes it hard to recommend, especially when you can simply get it anywhere - ANY-FREAKING-WHERE - for cheaper.

Oh sure if you buy this version you'll finally be able to play it while you're on the toilet woohoo, good waste of money for 3 hours of gameplay (or even less, considering how powerful doom is), but if you're smart and value your money - which I'm sure you do - I HIGHLY recommend it if you find it CHEAP and ONLY if it's CHEAP, as the game is simply not worth 60 bucks, not after 2 years of its initial release.

Or if you like wasting money and you're starving for new games on your switch, then go ahead: I'm sure those countless sales won't come back at tormenting you...

I previously reviewed the game on the PlayStation 4 and rewarded it a 10 out of 10. Head to my profile if you want to read that review and hear my actual thoughts on the core game itself.*
I've gone on record on numerous occasions to say that the 2016 "DOOM" remake was not only one of my favorite PlayStation 4 games, but one of my overall favorite video games. Yeah, sure, it was my first experience with the series, but I had an absolute blast with the game. It had all the things a great "DOOM" game should have (at least, based on my little research): incredible visuals, extremely fun, fast-paced and action-packed gameplay, smooth controls, and a ton of badass moments. So, when hearing that this game I loved so much was heading to the Nintendo Switch, I was admittedly a bit intrigued: would a game that huge, that graphically intense, and that fast actually translate well to the Switch, specifically when taking the system as a portable? Well, I'm here to report that, for the most part, it does!
"DOOM" on the Nintendo Switch retains all of the things that made the original great, and it's honestly a miracle that the game can run on the Switch pretty solidly. Sure, the game is downgraded to 30 FPS, but it's an overall quite smooth 30 FPS (though I recommend turning off the motion blur and the chromatic aberration), and while the resolution was downgraded, the game still looks just fine visually. On top of that, the portable experience is great in and of itself, and the game still feels great regardless of whether or not you're playing it docked or undocked.
Obviously, however, those downgrades are pretty noticeable: certain effects and models obviously look worse on the Switch version, and while the experience as a whole is quite smooth, there is some occasional frame dipping. Now, for me, it wasn't TOO distracting, and the game still performed fine enough, but some might be a bit turn-off by that. On top of that, I did run into a few noticeable glitches here and there, and again, they weren't game-breaking, but they were slightly distracting.
"DOOM" on the Switch is a marvel in and of itself: the fact that the game was even able to run without the Switch completely imploding is a miracle on its own, and the fact that the game, downgrades and all, still performs and looks fine on the system (even in handheld mode), is even more impressive to me. Of course, the downgrades are there and they are noticeable, but they luckily don't distract too much from the game as a whole. So, is it worth buying the Switch port if you already own the game elsewhere? Well, if you love "DOOM" but aren't begging to have a portable version of it, then obviously, the other versions should suit you just fine, but if you want to be able to take it on the go with you and play it whenever you please, most definitely. It's honestly just a matter of "knowing thy self" with this one. It's obvious the developers had to cut some corners to get it on the Switch, but they aren't all that bad at the end of the day, so if you're looking for the "DOOM" experience on the go, or you just need a fun, high-adrenaline shooter on your Switch, "DOOM" is definitely a solid option. Sure, it doesn't stack up to it's other console counterparts in performance or visuals, but it's still one hell of a ride on the Nintendo Switch.
Final rating: 7 out of 10 "Good"

Ive probably logged over 50 hours, playing online, arcade mode and replaying the story. I was thoroughly impressed back in 2017, and playing it just a couple weeks ago was still just as impressed. They released a couple of patches to make the menus look better in docked mode and to clean up performance some. It runs good for being on a freakin' tablet! I will say, I own multiple versions of this and obviously recommend the higher quality versions, but if Switch is your primary console, or you just want this game on the go, get it! You dont need to think twice. Hell, get it as a collector, because, who would have dreamed Doom would return to a Nintendo platform 20 years later?? Don't get me started on the soundtrack..I watched the 2 hour making of by Mick Gordon, (god he's amazing), this soundtrack is part of my everyday playlist. At least one song plays every day, my favorite track being "Mastermind" that track gives me the best chills playing on my badass home theatre system. Expand

It's an OK game with a lot of action and a high level difficulty, but after 10 hours it becomes to be boring, because it is always the same: shoot, shoot and shoot.

This game doesn't compare to Halo 2 or Far Cry 5. I generally prefer horror stealth games. This game was a bit of disappointment to me. I have only put in about 5 hours over a year. If you like this genre of game you should probably buy it on Switch as there isn't much competition. If this genre isn't one for you, then this game might not have enough edge to keep you gripped to completion.

    About the Switch port:

I wasn't sure at first if I should pick up DOOM for Switch, but when I wanted a First person shooter on the handheld I couldn't resist. This game did not let me down. The Campaign was great and having an online multiplayer shooter game on switch is awesome. The Graphics are really nice on the handheld and felt great playing handheld as well, I've played 80% handheld and 20% on TV, 9/10

Its a good looking game with fun enough multiplayer. The single player is fun and the shooting is satisfying. The game looks good and it's definitely a great port that most switch owners should own.

The strongest point of this version is, without doubt, the possibility of playing this game in portable mode, which is, despite the best resolution and fps, impossible to do comfortably in any other system

DOOM Switch is one of the best First Person Shooters I've played in years. The market has become over saturated with these boring, generic and overall samey games. Whether it's Call Of Duty going too far into the future, Halo stooping to a level never seen before or even ones who try to come back like Duke Nukem: Forever absolutely bombed. The market has become over saturated with these boring, generic and overall samey games. Whether it's Call Of Duty going too far into the future, Halo stooping to a level never seen before or even ones who try to come back like Duke Nukem: Forever absolutely bombed. Then came along DOOM (2016) who single handed-ly one-up-ed the entire FPS market in one very gruesome Glory Kill.

The first thing to mention about DOOM is that the main reason why it's such a breath of fresh air, the controls and progression. It's simple really, you shoot, you move, you jump, and you switch weapons. Sometimes Grenades and Mods are thrown into the mix, but overall it isn't very complex. No, where DOOM really shines is the progression. DOOM has a very similar progression to Metroidvanias, in the fact that it's semi-open world. Nothing is prohibited from the start, however in order to do better in combat you will need to find upgrades for your weapons' Mod/s. This way, it opens the gates to different types of players. If you want to be an unstoppable badass then better get searching. If you want to challenge yourself then choose to limit the abilities of your Mods, and see how much pain you can take.

Another thing the game excels at is the introduction, which may be one of the best introductions to a video game ever. It does everything a intro/first level needs to do. Introduces most of the mechanics to the player in a simple but effective manner, but if you've already played the game you can just speed through it like it's nothing. It gives enough plot so that those you just want action knows what their doing, but pulls those who want to know more in, and they can read the lore entries and get accustomed to the World(s) and their inhabitants. Not to mention, it has one of the most badass scenes ever, with the Doom Guy/Doom Slayer destroying an elevator control panel and having the main theme kick in. It's just pure, unadulterated manliness.

However, this game is not without its flaws. For starters, the grenades are kinda weak. The energy siphon gives back little health, the hologram on takes away some aggro from the demons, and the Frag is almost useless. There's also a very weird difficulty spike at the penultimate level, that doesn't make any sense. And while movement was fast, it wasn't good for the platforming sections. The amount of demons in the game doesn't bother me, as I prefer a game to have fewer enemies, but great enemy placement, rather than a large variety. The sequel to this game, DOOM: Eternal, seems to be fixing all of these problems, but at the time of this review it isn't out yet. One thing the Switch version does suffer from is some rare lag, 30 fps cap and the textures taking a hit worse than a Berserker Kill on a Baron of Hell. Though, this doesn't affect the gameplay too much, and these aren't an issue on the other versions.

Overall, DOOM (2016) is a fantastic game held back by some stupid decisions and inevitable drawbacks, but if you put those aside, it's amazing. I'm certainly getting the sequel at launch.

Rip and tear on the go, that's what its all about

You will probably get weird looks after people see you ripping a demon in half on the bus, but don't worry, they don't know how much fun you are having.

It would be criminal to say this game isn't a masterpiece (jk you can have your opinion)

Technically this port is so impressive that sometimes it’s hard to believe it actually exists. It’s the game itself that I have some issues with, as in my opinion its campaign is encumbered by elements that sometimes unnecessarily slow down Doom’s fantastic pace. [01/2018, p.53]

It’s not a perfect port. For those looking to play DOOM purely on the big screen, the Switch version’s janky visuals make it difficult to recommend. Yet, if you’re looking for a portable version of one of the best shooters in recent memory, DOOM thoroughly deserves to be the blood-soaked outlier lurking in your Switch library.
