Nov 9, 2017It's not impossible to look at by any means (as you can see in the above gallery) and everything is still perfectly readable from a gameplay perspective. The fact that a small, relatively cheap portable system like the Switch is capable of running a passable version of a recent high-end release like Doom is an achievement in and of itself. Just don't go in expecting the Switch version to be competitive with larger, more-powerful hardware designed for the TV (or a PC monitor).

Nov 9, 2017If you’re excited about the prospect of playing first-person shooters on Switch, Doom is a good bell-weather. Personal physical limitations and hand size seem to be the biggest variable when it comes to enjoying the genre. But even if hands are perfectly built to slaughter demon hordes, you’re still going to have to swallow some iffy visuals.

Nov 9, 2017Handheld first-person shooters tend to be pretty rare, and this is a far more viable product than, say, the PS Vita version of Borderlands 2. Context is important; it’s hard not to be impressed by this version of Doom.

Nov 9, 2017Hopefully Bethesda can get some more oomph out of the Nintendo Switch in the coming months, particularly in docked mode, and show that the Switch can be a home for major third parties. However, I know that I’d personally have held off given the daunting compromise in visuals and performance, even if it is a really good shooter on the go.

Nov 28, 2017If the Switch is the only current-gen system you own, Doom is a no-brainer for anyone into R-rated action games. If you own a PS4 or Xbox One, it comes down to how often you use your Switch as a handheld device. Doom on the move is great and well worth it, but if you use your TV more then you should get it on Sony or Microsoft’s system instead.

Nov 9, 2017Playing Doom on the Nintendo Switch had me marveling at the game in awe all over again. Though it’s been more than six months since the official release of the Switch, the idea of taking a proper, AAA console game with you on the go is still an incredible concept, and it’s on full display here with Bethesda’s Doom port. My experience with Doom on the Switch has been nice, but technology has not yet advanced far enough for us to be able to enjoy a home console experience on a portable device without making a few, crucial sacrifices.

Nov 16, 2017Doom 2016 is still utterly fantastic, the sort of thumping, compelling shooting experience that gets the blood pumping. In a time when so many shooters can feel like rote shooting galleries, Doom feels like something more – and it remains a firm recommendation for anyone who’s yet to play it on whatever platform they can get their hands on.
