Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night demonstrates a lot of dedication and passion for Metroidvanias. It is a fantastic rendition of the genre. Even with some predictable plot moments and a platforming learning curve, it manages to be one of my favorite games of this year. The gameplay is tremendously well-crafted, and the addictive factor is through the roof. The style and art direction are complemented with old-fashioned ’90s-style timeless tunes that never bore or disappoint. Miriam and her adventure are a must if you have a Nintendo Switch. Playing Bloodstained has become my ritual of the night.

A game worthy of being called a spiritual successor to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and one of the great examples of a very good Kickstarter video game.

It's Castlevania in everything but name and fans of Igarachi's earlier work will find a lot to love between excellent combat and rewarding traversal. The Switch port is harder to recommend at present, but the game is likely to be among the console's best after a patch or two.

The work of 505 Games is a proposal that pays homage to the metroidvania genre in a conservative way. Polishing with great success its formula but without offering anything innovative to what we already know about it.

The Nintendo Switch version of Bloodstained is certainly the worst, for an extraordinary game that deserves more.

Despite the fact that this is unquestionably a very fine video game, there's no escaping the fact that the Switch version has some serious issues; assets are noticeably weaker than they are in other versions, the frame rate is halved and the loading times are maddeningly protracted at points. Fingers are crossed that the developers can remedy some of these problems with proposed updates, but for the time being, this is arguably the least impressive edition of the game – although the fact that it's portable perhaps counts for more than you'd think.

So, what we’ve got in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a well-designed game that’s poorly developed. A championship-caliber team that needs another few months (or perhaps another year) of training camp. 505 Games has promised to fix the glaring problems, but I can’t review a game based on promises. There’s still some fun to be had here, but it shouldn’t have been released in its current state. Wait for the updates. If they don’t come, wait for a sale…and stay away from the bookshelves.

Apenas salga el parche prometido le pongo el 10 que se merece. Un castelbania para viciar. Expand

Maybe it's because I did not play the other version before I start my Switch version, I don't feel the slower frame-rate like some other people. This is my first Metroidvania game, and it is making me into a fan of the genre. The game crashes a few times for me, but I didn't get any other bugs that was reported. Expand

Very badly optimized for the Switch, however. Considerable lag/slowdown at times. Some loading screens are excessively long (staircase shortcut near the beginning of the library, to name one).

Detest games in which the “game over” screen/sequence can’t be skipped. Yes, yes, I died. Fine. Let me jump back into the game ASAP and try again. Don’t make me stare at the “game over” and loading screens for up to a minute.

This game is really good but incredibly poorly optimized for Switch, in a degree that makes it unplayable.

Very disappointing. I pre-ordered this game immediately following Jim Sterling's video praising the game for everything that it did right. ItVery disappointing. I pre-ordered this game immediately following Jim Sterling's video praising the game for everything that it did right. It was downloaded and I eagerly awaited this morning to finally play it, but when I did, it felt off. It felt more like a PS1 era game. Mighty bloodstained #9. Then as soon as I got low on life, the controller rumbling just never stopped! So I had to totally disable the hd rumble effects for the game. That's annoying. As soon as I looked up what was wrong with this game, I realized quickly that it wasn't just me. This game looks ugly, and plays like garbage. I've had some slowdown, although I hear it's worse as you keep playing, I only got about an hour in. It's just awful to look at. Maybe they'll patch this mess, but probably not seeing as switch owners who got burned will just move on and newcomers won't touch it. $40 wasted, could have been worse I guess, but it put me in a bad mood. I will never again pre-order any game, that's my $40 lesson. Expand
