I waited for the Switch version. Maybe it's because I did not play the other version before I start my Switch version, I don't feel the slower frame-rate like some other people. This is my first Metroidvania game, and it is making me into a fan of the genre. The game crashes a few times for me, but I didn't get any other bugs that was reported.

While it doesn’t look as good on Switch compared to other platforms, the compromises are acceptable and offers a visual feast nonetheless. I do feel that the player’s character should be higher res but that’s really just a nitpick. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is essentially a more sophisticated Symphony of the Night with some additional interesting ideas that looks great and plays great on the Nintendo Switch. Expand

The next thing I have trouble with is controls. They are seriously in need of better response time. I can recall the many times I had pressed a button for her to jump and she.. stood there was if very confused and no jumping happened. I had to press it three times in succession before she finally was "Oh! I'm supposed to jump, sorry I fell asleep." The input for special moves were especially bad, since it's a 1/7 chance it succeeds. (The roll forward is the most troubled one, because it's not reading it well enough. I have to go snail mode just for it to get it.)

The graphic use of this I was shocked.. I had no idea on how to put it, and still have no idea on what to say. Impressed? No.. Disappointed? Again.. no.. it's hard to tell really.

But that aside, I find the game ok, but as a fan, this I feel is a 'hiccup'. Iga, I loved SOTN and I know you definitely made it clear on what your intent was when it came to making it, as also prior titles before Mirror of Fate or Lords of Shadow came along. I think that with a few patches to fix the controls and voice acting (Like, remove it.) , I think this can boost my confidence and will definitely having me sing a different tune.

An almost perfect game for fans of the genre. Forget all negative reviews. Sure, the PS4 version looks/is better but it's still a pleasure to play on Switch. I had 25 hours of fun and am still motivated to uncover the whole map, discover all shards and trying out some weapons. I never feel forced to grind, I do it because it's fun. Looking forward for the upcoming free DLC

At first it was only graphical downgrade issues (which are really significant, and I know the Switch can handle far better than that, so the devs are simply not adept at optimizing for the platform) and I was willing to deal with it if the frame rate was ok, but as the rooms got bigger and filled with monsters the game would lag and even freeze completely for a few seconds. The rumble feature was excessive and poorly implemented and even the sound mix seemed rough.

For now, avoid the Switch version, I'm really annoyed because I know there are devs out there who can handle the platform and this is unacceptable.

The game is really good by the way, so don't avoid the game, just buy it on any other platform.

    Post 1.03 Patch Edit:

So, patch 1.03 supposedly fixed the bad graphics and input lag. I don't see the difference. I honestly see no difference. The game still drops inputs. It still looks kinda bad. I've played some more of it, so I'm at around 80% done.

Now, before you get your flame-hat on and roast me for my opinions, let me first say I'm a big Castlevania and Metroidvania fan. I own the following games from the series: Castlevania 3, Super Castlevania 4, Symphony of the Night, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow, Order of Ecclesia. I've also played many of the, ahem, less good ones, like Simon's Quest, Dracula X, Circle of the Moon, Castlevania 64 (both versions of it sadly), Lords of Shadow. I also own and really like Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. It recaptures the spirit of the NES games while removing the frustration those games were designed around.

So what do I find wrong with Ritual of the Night? Many things, yes. Many, many things.

I don't know if this is because of the Switch version's poor visuals, but a lot of areas have enemy designs and level backgrounds with very similar colour schemes. This makes sense within the world of the game, but makes stuff really hard to see. The inferno area gets particularly bad when it comes to visual confusion, with bright lava flowing in the background, just behind Fire Elementals made of, well, fire. And these Fire Elementals cast - yes, that's right - fire spells. And they are often in a room with fire throwing goop monsters - made of lava, no less - with dogs running around that are also - you guessed it - made of fire and lava. The struggle is real.

One other important irritant involves bullet sponges (whip sponges?). Both regular enemies and bosses. The second boss in the game has 1000 hp, and I was hitting for a massive 14 points of damage. Now I know what you may be thinking, "git gud", but I'll pre-emptively respond with "hey dingus, this is not Galamoth, this isn't even Olrox. This is the second boss in the game and he shouldn't take over 70 hits to kill on an average playthrough".

For non-boss enemies, those flaming goop monsters I mentioned earlier - the sit-ins for skeletons from the Castlevania series? They take 4 or 5 hits to take down. Who makes skeletons take more than 2 hits to kill? And their projectiles can fly through ceilings. Why can't mine?

Also leveling up doesn't seem to increase damage input. I'm trying really, really hard not to curse.

Crafting decent items always seems to require items that are rare drops, which I don't know where to farm. You'd think a bovine plume would come from that enemy that looks like a cow with wings, but no, it comes from that OTHER palette swap cow with wings you haven't seen yet and is still 6 hours of gameplay away. Why do I have this recipe? I'm always short on cash anyway, so I can't buy extra stuff to craft with either.

My god, when should I stop? Should I mention the buggy skill list? The average story? The bland characters? The seeker arrows that often lock on off-screen enemies? The still buggy visual effects? The fact that this game has ruined my faith in humanity? My resulting low testosterone count? I don't know...

I suppose the music is pretty good. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Giving the company the benefit of the doubt about releasing small updates to patch the game to me as a programmer and as someone who has studied well enough about software engineering and the whole QA process, I find this a poor attempt on their part to release a game that many of us have waited extra time for and we were hoping this game would be polished and at least look somewhat like the other console or PC versions, just with toned down graphics or AA. This doesn't seem to be the case with this game. It's almost like they've removed so much of the detail from the game JUST to get it to run, and even then it struggles to try and keep up. In my opinion, this is totally unacceptable for any company to have people who pay for their game or even back the game on Kickstarter and then wait an additional amount of time with no review to go off of and then you're given a completely broken game. Maybe I'll come back around and give this game a go and buy the PC version, but right now, ArtPlay, has left a bad impression on me and I've decided to spend my hard earned money elsewhere. That said, the Switch port of the game has a lot of problems. But still its a nice game, and I will be playing it for a few more hours to see whats hidden deeper under what I already saw..
I will update my comments after then... After I prepared the below video.. I spent a few more time playing it... and I like it more and more... I´m still not in love with it :-) but a fair friendship here :-) And my 11 years daughter saw it and went into the testing as well. and.. She likes it even more then I do... Only she is not used to RPG game and it will trouble her to use the different objects and weapons and potions and so one she will find on the way... Not even I was able to identify what for will most of the object to be used... the game is just much more complex, then what I was able to see in the video... So right away I must recommend it :-)

It's a shame, because I normally love this genre and I can tell there's a great game in here beneath the technical issues.

The input lag is very noticeable. I thought maybe that's just how the weapons were designed, but it's not just the weapons. It's jumping, too. After playing dozens of hours of Dead Cells, it's super apparent that these controls are not tight.

The loading times are unpredictable. After loading the game for the first time, I restarted because it just stayed black after showing the logos. I thought something went wrong. I loaded it up again and let it run longer ... that's just how it's supposed to be. It has long black screen moments with no indication that something is happening. No loading icon or anything. The reload time after death is way too long, as well as the loading time between some of the rooms.

Probably a relatively small gripe, but another thing that bugs me is when I jump up to another room and fall right back down into the previous one because I didn't hold a direction button. If it was an instant transition between screens it would be forgivable, but it's not. It takes about 3 seconds for the room to load, then instantly fall back down, then 3 more seconds to load the previous room again.

I will hold off on finishing the game until some of the problems are fixed. Thankfully, it appears that the developers are dedicated to fixing them. I wish I would have purchased the PS4 version instead. I would have never thought it would matter this much with a 2D game, but the review gap is huge.

По интересу bloodstained не дотянул до sotn, aria/dawn of sorrow, но мне показался удачнее, чем portrait of ruin, order of ecclesia. Главные проблемы игры - технические. Надеюсь, что их со временем устранят и я смогу перепройти ее еще раз(пока желания такого не возникает)

Having the physical copy is useless at this point as the game requires so many patches needed to make it usable make buy physical cartridges useless. That being said the game is just not really quite what I was hoping it would be which is a huge let down.

    MUSIC
The music is good but in so many places it just isn't strong, it plays in the background more like elevator music than something that really adds something to the game. While in no way does this make the game worse, it could have added so much more to the game than it does.

    GRAPHICS
The way they down scaled the graphics was ugly on every level, and this has nothing to do with the limited hardware of the switch, I have a lot of switch games that have gorgeous graphics, there is no excuse for this other than poor practices from the development team that was hoping the hardware would make up for their deficiencies rather than doing a good job with what they had.

    CONTROLS
These are OK, with some higher level inputs similar to fighting game inputs for some fun weapon tricks in the game, but due to the frames taken in action animations I find these to be mostly useless in almost every way so its cool they are there but using them is not really something you will use all that often.

    GAME DEPTH
OK here the game shines, there is a lot going on, a lot thought out, and a LOT to find. Some is based on grinding things out but it really doesn't feel bad in any way and is actually a lot of fun. The game is huge and seriously deep with a ton of great things going on in it and is amazingly well thought out from the concept/design side of being a game! This is where all the positive comes from for this game and I cannot stress enough that this aspect alone makes the game worth looking into owning!!! If the mechanics are fixed later, then this aspect makes the game a definite good game, you simply cannot enjoy the game with the technical side lacking so much.

    OVERALL
Game should be amazing but holds itself back to almost unplayable as it is. Another game that released broken, didn't warn buyers, held back the broken edition until reviews came out for a week which is really shady, crashes and unstable, bad graphics, good but underwhelming music, and a beautiful idea that doesn't feel like it was brought to life like it should have been. The games director IGA is brilliant and makes a fantastic world, but the development fell flat and made for an ugly, unstable, slow moving, bad lag time, frame skipping, problematic game. A lot of this is fixed on other editions of the game (PS4, PC, XBOX) but I cannot say I recommend them either due to some of the issues carrying over to all editions and also I don't enjoy supporting or recommending any game from a company that releases such unfinished products to consumers, so maybe later pick up a discount copy but buying it any time soon is as foolish as paying full price for late pizza and a wise man would not do that.

Another significant issue is the rumble, it's just too much. The rumble is there to warn users they're at low health, but the strength of the rumble and that it's constant so long as you remain at low health makes it absolutely unbearable, especially if you get stuck in a cutscene while at low health.

Basically, the game is really good, but get it on another console.

The flaws in this game go far beyond just technical issues, it has artistic fallacies that just are impossible to ignore. I couldn't bring myself to enjoy it even when I ignored all the technical aspect of the switch and believe me there are some technical aspects here.
Whoever rated this game above a seven in my personal opinion is just biased.
This is really shameful and so disappointing on so many levels.
you better take your money and invested in any other in the game there are amazing games out there that are much better and much less pretentious believe me you don't need this pretentious game in your collection.
Unless it falls to a price of like 10 bucks then okay, for $10 I would buy it but even $0.01 more is completely exaggerated.
I cannot believe how I fell for the hype of this campaign.
this all just serves to prove that one of the things that made Symphony of the night so great was indeed the Castlevania IP and probably the restrictions imposed by Konami back in the day.
some people when you give them creative freedom is just too much for them to handle and this is what I believe happened here for years in production and this is the product that we get? Unbelievable!
The ridiculous thing is that if this game would have preserved its 2D graphics and more effort was invested on the direction and the production and putting the pieces together so that they made emotional sense then it could really have been a good game.
but I feel like 70% of the power was invested in making graphics look great on a PS4 specifically mind you.
I don't know I just feel so disappointed this is so many levels below Castlevania Symphony of the night, there's just no place for comparison.
A great disappointment. keep away from this until its price drops to one-third of his current price.

Constant framerate drop, resolution deficiency, stutter, input lag, and intermittent crashes mar an otherwise fun game.

As a long-time fan of Castlevania looking forward to this game, I bought it for Switch for the portability. If I would've known there was such a huge difference in quality and playability between the Switch version and all the rest, I would've bought it for PC and been done with it. Compared to PC, PS4, and Xbox, the Switch version plays like a potato and they still haven't patched it to fix all the issues.

The game itself is fun, although a little shorter than I would've liked. There's some replayability in NG+ mode, but once you get decent gear (most of which is getting nerfed at the moment) and upgrade some shards (again, much of the most popular are getting nerfed), it's really just the thrill of the grind that keeps it going. I don't think this is a spoiler, since it's common knowledge and I'm not divulging any actual details, but even the three endings are really just one actual ending and two game over screens.

All in all, decent game that plays on the best parts of SotN in its own way, but it's marred by technical issues in the Switch version that take away from the enjoyment and overall quality of the experience. Could've been so much better, I think, but it's far from terrible. I'd get it on any of the other version rather than Switch, if you're considering purchasing.

The sprites look better in handheld than they do on a normal larger screen, but they're still choppy and unattractive. There are places when your character may jump into another room from below, and because the screen takes too long to load, you may end up falling back down by not holding over towards the correct direction in time. (For example, if you jump up to another room, but don't continue to hold L or R for 3-4 seconds to ensure you get to the platform above, you'll fall back. This only seems to occur in certain areas, but when it does, it's incredibly frustrating.
However, the other gameplay elements one would expect are still there, and there is still a lot of fun to be had from leveling, crafting, and exploring...unfortunately it's just not very pretty while doing so. Hopefully some patches will fix what's lacking.

The merchants and portal at your home base are too far apart seem hardly an issue if you can put up with everything else. The controls are a bit clunky but that's expected from a Castlevania experience.

A lot of enemies are recolours of each other, after the first few bosses the variety drops massively. Occasionally in the later hidden areas you'll find new things.

I beat the "final" boss with less than half the map completed and tried to get more of it done. Got stuck at Zangetsu and the Carpenter and felt that those bosses weren't fun enough to continue. It's a shame that a lot of people won't get to play some of the later hidden areas because Oriental Lab is cool and adds a new environmental mechanic and the flip ability is an incredibly clever and cool idea in a metroidvania and it's always fun to use.

I know the true ending should be hard to get but one of the essential items is in a chest that is not depicted on the map like most chests.

When looking at the map, you can't see the names of locations — only when looking at the map at a warp point.

I could probably go on with more issues.

When compared to the Steam (PC) version, it's really a shame the graphics look so bad on the Switch. They could have done a better job (ex. Doom port). Resolution is much lower and the frame rate too, although playable.

Don't spend your money on the Switch version. I did buy it on Steam (a second licence) and could manage to import my save game from the Switch (it's very complicated).

It's so bad. I really, really wanted to like this game but after getting nearly 90% through the story a particular boss involving money keeps glitching out of range to the point that I can't damage him. This happens every. single. time. and I can't get passed it. What a waste of my time.

The controls for special attacks on the Switch are incredibly poor making accessing some of the areas, particularly the hidden ones, unreasonably difficult. What may have been a great game turned into a mediocre game due to poor controls. A real shame.

Not worth a 0 or a 1 like several user reviews say, but definitely inferior to the releases on other platforms. I personally think that the resolution and general blurriness is not an issue. The load times and input delays are definitely what bother me the most about the Switch version of the game. Fighting bosses is quite the pain when the character moves 0.2 sec after you try to dodge something, and some of those rooms take several seconds to load leaving you with just a black screen in the meantime.

Game has potential but definitely needs a patch. From what I've seen on their social media, they are shifting their efforts to improve this port, which is encouraging. I will potentially increase my rating to a 7 or 8 if the game ends up running smoothly. I would recommend waiting a month or two before buying that version of the game.

Os gráficos até estão ok, apenas a resolução que passa uma sensação borrada em partes da textura. Aguardando novas updates.

The only two issues I had while playing this game on switch in 2020 is the frame rate drop at the Tower of the Twin Dragons and getting stuck in a wall (you can free yourself by sliding). Ok, and that's why it's not a perfect 10.

Don't listen to the negitive reviews, it really isn't that bad. While in docked mode, the game only had two small problems. The first was the occasional crashes, which usually only happened when i talked to NPCs in Arantville. The only times the game crashed while I wasn't talking to an NPC was when I read a book in the Garden of Silence (The one above the first room when you enter from the Castle Entrance.) and during the ending. (which I'm still pissed about.) The game is FAR from unplayable and is incredibly enjoyable. However, handheld mode has a lot of lag so I don't recommend playing it in the car or something. Though i'm someone who doesn't care about frame rate, I can say that the drop to 30 isn't that big of a deal. It still runs fine with little to no lag in docked mode. I do say that the Library area is problematic due to long 30 second-ish loading times between rooms, which can be infuriating when jumping from one room to another and given a split second to react or your thrown into another 30 second long loading screen. Other than the Library area, this problem was nowhere else in the game. The soundtrack is mostly pretty forgettable (castlevania OSTs are overrated imo) but not bad at all, and like always some of the songs are completely awesome. (The Normal Boss theme, Ship Area theme, Tower of Twin Dragons theme, and Gremory Battle theme are all excellent.) The gameplay is top notch and is a mix of the two best castlevania games imo, Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow. The game controls and progresses like Symphony of the Night but has the "Tactical Soul System" from Chronicles of Sorrow, but now souls are called "shards" but still function the same. I'm also glad to report that while shards do level up like in Dawn of Sorrow, they are not nearly as rare as they are in Dawn or Aria (to a lesser extent) and are actually quite common. (4-10% drop chance AT BASE) Also this game has some amazing features like a detailed cooking system that allows you to dramatically increase your stats whenever you eat a new food as well as substitute for potions and ethers. The game also features a vast crafting system which is a lot less grindy and cumbersome as Dawn of Sorrow's weapon upgrade system. Overall, the gameplay is great, and even the story is amazing. Castlevania games, despite having a vast amount of lore, are not usually focused on the story. This game is the same, but the story this time is much more compelling than something like Castlevania 3 or Portrait of Ruin. The playable character Miriam is not only ultra sexy (top tier waifu 2019) but is also extremely awesome and kicks butt. She also has a sense of humor, unlike top tier waifu 2009 Shanoa over here. (Don't @ me) The story also has some good plot twists, which I definitely wouldn't have seen coming if I didn't spoil myself when the game came out on other platforms. (What? I can't help it!) Overall, while this game on Switch definitely isn't ideal, it's far from unplayable, especially in docked mode. This is the true successor to Castlevania you have been waiting for since 2009's Order of Eclisia, and it's well worth the wait. Too bad the crashes on switch hold it back. 8/10. Expand

I was able to complete this game with no game breaking glitches and no crashes. I would often switch from dock to handheld because being a daddy means I have to play games where ever and when ever. Maybe when it first came out it was a hot mess, but as of now, it's great!
The music is superb, however, there was one area where I felt like the music was half-baked and could've done a better job setting the mood. The rest of the soundtrack sounds like it was ripped straight out of a Castlevania game.
Some of the weapons felt pointless. I REALLY wanted to use her legs the entire game, but the boot upgrades were always lesser than most of the swords I picked up. Also, I wish that the food I could eat for health would give me an HP count prior to cooking my ingredients so I didn't waste things cooking food that wouldn't help me in battle.
I was able to play this game to 100% completion in about 22 hrs.

On the Switch it's probably the worst performance of any system, but far more demanding games run better than this on the Switch. Please, either stick to a lower-res and/or use of 2D art or optimize the hell out of the engine, because my GBA runs the same sophistication of *gameplay* at a higher frame rate. Developed by Koji Igarashi with Michiru Yamane creating the soundtrack, as with the aforementioned titles developed under their stewardship, Bloodstained follows the same basic design that seamlessly blends RPG mechanics with Metroid type exploration. While these old tropes flare the nostalgia senses I do get the feeling the Metroidvania subgenre has seen it's bar moved considerably in recent times - largely thanks to near AAA epics like Hollow Knight and a long queue of creative and novel contemporary indie titles clamoring for that podium. Bloodstained thus lacks that freshness of innovation, preferring to embrace the old while doing little more than the bare minimum regarding something new. Despite this, the gameplay is tight and solid, combat is fun and engaging, there are a plethora of weapon and elemental options, as well as crafting activities to engage in. As with many Koji Igarashi titles, the curious gamer that engages in grinding will be rewarded for his/her effort. The gamer is spared handholding and it is possible to rush through and engage in boss battles when the character level and equipment are too weak for the task. This can make the game appear unfair or very challenging - with the occasionally punishing battles ostensibly appearing to have been won or lost by chance. Conversely, if you play the game as one would an expansive RPG, exploring each subsection thoroughly, battling weaker enemies for levelling up perks, the game proves never to be unfair or punishing. The game in this regard only punishes the impatient. The soundtrack produced by Michiru Yamane perfectly compensates the gameplay and is audio magnificence. Songs range from the bombastic guitar work reminiscent of a classic Y's game to somniferous dulcet tones where environmental noises are given front stage for the level atmospherics. The graphics adopt that contemporary 2.5D style applying rasterization technology although I personally would have preferred hand drawn graphics or pixel art in a style similar to Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth. Nonetheless the graphics in Bloodstained, at least the PC and PS4 version, are largely very good. This leads us to the main gripe with the Switch port of Bloodstained. The graphics run at much lower settings than that of the PC game (and PS4). On the small screen in portable mode it is fine but on a large panel like a 60" plus TV, the graphics look like a PS2 game adorned with extra bling, washed out low resolution textures and assets, jaggies and all. The frame rate for the Switch port is also capped at 30fps and in some areas the frame rate will dip into the low 20's. This aspect does not kill the experience - it is a single player title but it goes without say I would definitely have preferred a smooth 30fps experience, perhaps ideally a 60fps experience. The graphics are only a tragedy if you bother to run the Switch version side by side with the PC or PS4/Xbox version. Without that point of calibration, just play the game and enjoy it for what it is. In portable mode it proves to be an adequate port for one that glosses over the graphical fidelity (playing a game is surely more fun than counting pixels?). Graphical fidelity aside, this is largely the same experience as one would have on the PC/PS4/Xbox. No levels were chopped out and the game is as complete as the other ports. If you want to have a version of Bloodstained on the go, this Switch port will definitely do the job. If all you have is a Switch, buy this game and enjoy, ignore the haters and review bombing this game received. This is a good perhaps occasionally great Metroidvania title. On the PC I would have given it an 8.5/10, but due to the graphical problems and glitches, I feel inclined to drop the score for the Switch port by a letter grade. 7.5/10 (rounded to 8 since Metacritic does not do halves). A good game slightly marred by the stingy visual aesthetics of the Switch. This will be a case of YMMV. Expand

By the time the final performance update drops it will be those who snatch the game at a sale price that will ultimately benefit the most. There’s a 1.04 update that is expected by the end of November, and I would bet money that it won’t be the last. It’s a real shame because underneath the stigma of a troubled release and a lost first impression of a polished product, lies a potentially magnificent game that holds true to what it once ambitiously set out to achieve.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a game that many fans wanted and it does a very good job when it comes to its fan service duties. If only the game’s performance matched its level of challenge, this would be an unforgettable, indispensable title but unfortunately, Ritual of the Night’s framerate drops and strange inconsistencies make this an experience that could have been much more of a breeze. Fans of Metroidvania games will still find plenty to be happy about it, though.
