Allow me to begin on the first let down of the game, the voicing. The characters sound so bored, let alone tired. Half the time, the personalities do not match. When it comes to Miriam getting a new soul.. I honestly can't stand her scream of 'agony' (Or was it pleasure.. I have no idea.)

The next thing I have trouble with is controls. They are seriously in need of better response time. I can recall the many times I had pressed a button for her to jump and she.. stood there was if very confused and no jumping happened. I had to press it three times in succession before she finally was "Oh! I'm supposed to jump, sorry I fell asleep." The input for special moves were especially bad, since it's a 1/7 chance it succeeds. (The roll forward is the most troubled one, because it's not reading it well enough. I have to go snail mode just for it to get it.)

The graphic use of this I was shocked.. I had no idea on how to put it, and still have no idea on what to say. Impressed? No.. Disappointed? Again.. no.. it's hard to tell really.

But that aside, I find the game ok, but as a fan, this I feel is a 'hiccup'. Iga, I loved SOTN and I know you definitely made it clear on what your intent was when it came to making it, as also prior titles before Mirror of Fate or Lords of Shadow came along. I think that with a few patches to fix the controls and voice acting (Like, remove it.) , I think this can boost my confidence and will definitely having me sing a different tune.

This is a difficult review for me to write. I highly respect Iga and the team that made this game. The story is funny, engaging, and immersive, the gameplay is fun and innovative, and the crafting systems and magic systems are really well implemented. The soundtrack is memorable, and Miriam is a fun protagonist to play.

That said, the Switch port of the game has a lot of problems. It's very buggy, there's a big graphics downgrade, and there are a lot of crashes that really bog down the game and the fun experience. I hope Iga and his studio address the Switch issues, and fix this buggy port, but I don't know how much control they have over the Switch version. If you can play this game on PC or PS4, definitely do it. If you are thinking about getting the Switch port, maybe hold off for a while.

Bloodstained should be a good game. It has all the elements to make a pretty engaging Metroidvania styled game. Here's the problem if you would like to get the most out of the game: It's 1% story, 6% actual gameplay, 15% exploration, and 78% farming.

I had my first crash about an hour in. I lost a lot of progress and random drops which was pretty frustrating. It's a shame, because I normally love this genre and I can tell there's a great game in here beneath the technical issues.

The input lag is very noticeable. I thought maybe that's just how the weapons were designed, but it's not just the weapons. It's jumping, too. After playing dozens of hours of Dead Cells, it's super apparent that these controls are not tight.

The loading times are unpredictable. After loading the game for the first time, I restarted because it just stayed black after showing the logos. I thought something went wrong. I loaded it up again and let it run longer ... that's just how it's supposed to be. It has long black screen moments with no indication that something is happening. No loading icon or anything. The reload time after death is way too long, as well as the loading time between some of the rooms.

Probably a relatively small gripe, but another thing that bugs me is when I jump up to another room and fall right back down into the previous one because I didn't hold a direction button. If it was an instant transition between screens it would be forgivable, but it's not. It takes about 3 seconds for the room to load, then instantly fall back down, then 3 more seconds to load the previous room again.

I will hold off on finishing the game until some of the problems are fixed. Thankfully, it appears that the developers are dedicated to fixing them. I wish I would have purchased the PS4 version instead. I would have never thought it would matter this much with a 2D game, but the review gap is huge.

Another significant issue is the rumble, it's just too much. The rumble is there to warn users they're at low health, but the strength of the rumble and that it's constant so long as you remain at low health makes it absolutely unbearable, especially if you get stuck in a cutscene while at low health.

Basically, the game is really good, but get it on another console.

The flaws in this game go far beyond just technical issues, it has artistic fallacies that just are impossible to ignore. I couldn't bring myself to enjoy it even when I ignored all the technical aspect of the switch and believe me there are some technical aspects here.
Whoever rated this game above a seven in my personal opinion is just biased.
This is really shameful and so disappointing on so many levels.
you better take your money and invested in any other in the game there are amazing games out there that are much better and much less pretentious believe me you don't need this pretentious game in your collection.
Unless it falls to a price of like 10 bucks then okay, for $10 I would buy it but even $0.01 more is completely exaggerated.
I cannot believe how I fell for the hype of this campaign.
this all just serves to prove that one of the things that made Symphony of the night so great was indeed the Castlevania IP and probably the restrictions imposed by Konami back in the day.
some people when you give them creative freedom is just too much for them to handle and this is what I believe happened here for years in production and this is the product that we get? Unbelievable!
The ridiculous thing is that if this game would have preserved its 2D graphics and more effort was invested on the direction and the production and putting the pieces together so that they made emotional sense then it could really have been a good game.
but I feel like 70% of the power was invested in making graphics look great on a PS4 specifically mind you.
I don't know I just feel so disappointed this is so many levels below Castlevania Symphony of the night, there's just no place for comparison.
A great disappointment. keep away from this until its price drops to one-third of his current price.

Constant framerate drop, resolution deficiency, stutter, input lag, and intermittent crashes mar an otherwise fun game.

As a long-time fan of Castlevania looking forward to this game, I bought it for Switch for the portability. If I would've known there was such a huge difference in quality and playability between the Switch version and all the rest, I would've bought it for PC and been done with it. Compared to PC, PS4, and Xbox, the Switch version plays like a potato and they still haven't patched it to fix all the issues.

The game itself is fun, although a little shorter than I would've liked. There's some replayability in NG+ mode, but once you get decent gear (most of which is getting nerfed at the moment) and upgrade some shards (again, much of the most popular are getting nerfed), it's really just the thrill of the grind that keeps it going. I don't think this is a spoiler, since it's common knowledge and I'm not divulging any actual details, but even the three endings are really just one actual ending and two game over screens.

All in all, decent game that plays on the best parts of SotN in its own way, but it's marred by technical issues in the Switch version that take away from the enjoyment and overall quality of the experience. Could've been so much better, I think, but it's far from terrible. I'd get it on any of the other version rather than Switch, if you're considering purchasing.

The sprites look better in handheld than they do on a normal larger screen, but they're still choppy and unattractive. There are places when your character may jump into another room from below, and because the screen takes too long to load, you may end up falling back down by not holding over towards the correct direction in time. (For example, if you jump up to another room, but don't continue to hold L or R for 3-4 seconds to ensure you get to the platform above, you'll fall back. This only seems to occur in certain areas, but when it does, it's incredibly frustrating.
However, the other gameplay elements one would expect are still there, and there is still a lot of fun to be had from leveling, crafting, and exploring...unfortunately it's just not very pretty while doing so. Hopefully some patches will fix what's lacking.

Many aspects on screen are low resolution. The backgrounds can look very nice though.

The systems are fun but there's so much holding this back. Most of the issues are just about execution.

The merchants and portal at your home base are too far apart seem hardly an issue if you can put up with everything else. The controls are a bit clunky but that's expected from a Castlevania experience.

A lot of enemies are recolours of each other, after the first few bosses the variety drops massively. Occasionally in the later hidden areas you'll find new things.

I beat the "final" boss with less than half the map completed and tried to get more of it done. Got stuck at Zangetsu and the Carpenter and felt that those bosses weren't fun enough to continue. It's a shame that a lot of people won't get to play some of the later hidden areas because Oriental Lab is cool and adds a new environmental mechanic and the flip ability is an incredibly clever and cool idea in a metroidvania and it's always fun to use.

I know the true ending should be hard to get but one of the essential items is in a chest that is not depicted on the map like most chests.

When looking at the map, you can't see the names of locations — only when looking at the map at a warp point.

I could probably go on with more issues.

The load times and input delays are definitely what bother me the most about the Switch version of the game. Fighting bosses is quite the pain when the character moves 0.2 sec after you try to dodge something, and some of those rooms take several seconds to load leaving you with just a black screen in the meantime.

Game has potential but definitely needs a patch. From what I've seen on their social media, they are shifting their efforts to improve this port, which is encouraging. I will potentially increase my rating to a 7 or 8 if the game ends up running smoothly. I would recommend waiting a month or two before buying that version of the game.

Very badly optimized for the Switch, however. Considerable lag/slowdown at times. Some loading screens are excessively long (staircase shortcut near the beginning of the library, to name one). Detest games in which the “game over” screen/sequence can’t be skipped. Yes, yes, I died. Fine. Let me jump back into the game ASAP and try again. Don’t

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a good game, don't get me wrong, but boy, waiting for it to become great has been a job in itself! [Issue #48 – September/October 2020, p. 72]

By the time the final performance update drops it will be those who snatch the game at a sale price that will ultimately benefit the most. There’s a 1.04 update that is expected by the end of November, and I would bet money that it won’t be the last. It’s a real shame because underneath the stigma of a troubled release and a lost first impression of a polished product, lies a potentially magnificent game that holds true to what it once ambitiously set out to achieve.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a game that many fans wanted and it does a very good job when it comes to its fan service duties. If only the game’s performance matched its level of challenge, this would be an unforgettable, indispensable title but unfortunately, Ritual of the Night’s framerate drops and strange inconsistencies make this an experience that could have been much more of a breeze. Fans of Metroidvania games will still find plenty to be happy about it, though.
