If you are first player, the game is amazing. If you're not... I stopped playing the game when I realize that I couldn't achieve some major developments or enjoy the full experience. Not even with another copy of the game...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This could have been a Nintendo masterpiece, however the fact that I had to buy a second Switch (lite) just so that both my wife and I could play is really terrible customer service from Nintendo. I am now super frustrated that I cant move my game over to the bigger Switch and play on the TV. I have been stuck with the small screen for months and despite the fact that my wife is done with the game I have no option but to use the lite version. I pay for the online service but cant transfer my game between the two devices that I had to purchase! With every other game I own I can use both consoles as it suits. Nintendo has basically ruined the whole point of owning a Switch with this game. Again, terrible policy/customer service. Expand

I simply cannot write a positive review of this game due to the one island for the entire console idiocy. Why did Nintendo choose to do such a stupid thing? My other games can handle it. Come on Nintendo, put out a patch!!

If you have more than one person in your household that wants to play this game, everyone but the primary person is screwed. Only the primary person is gets the recipes to craft most of the furniture, and only the primary person can build homes for new residents or do any of the stuff required to advance the story. The other people can't even help out, other than gathering resources (woo fun).

I’ve been playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons since release day and it’s definitely saved me during these difficult months.

One big update in the latest Animal Crossing game is the ability to transform your island. The terraforming aspect really adds to the game and gives you endless possibilities when it comes to decorating your island. You can build your own decorations and furniture with materials you find, which help towards the goal of reaching a 5* island.

The villagers within the game are as adorable as always. An added bonus is that your villagers no longer leave without warning, so you can technically keep your favourite villagers on your island for as long as possible. You can also go out hunting for your next villager which is a fun element.

The regular updates keep players hooked to the game, particularly the seasonal updates such as Easter, Halloween, etc. Seasonal updates gives you additional goals to work towards which brings you back to the game yet again.

Whilst I always return to New Horizons regularly, I’ve found that in recent months that I spend less and less time playing as I’ve run out of things to do on my island, which is a shame. There’s always the possibility of redecorating your island, but once you’ve finalised your design then it becomes difficult to find tasks to do to keep yourself busy.

Another negative that seems quite small, but can become quite frustrating, is the lack of storage. Usually it wouldn’t be a huge issue, however when one big element of the game is to craft items to use across your island, having nowhere to store your materials over time causes you to dump items on your island, bringing the rating down. This is disheartening over time when you can no long aim for a 5* island due to items being dropped on the ground.

All in all, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a lovely, relaxing game that keeps you coming back for more. The game could easily be a 10/10 game if some of the small frustrations were fixed.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is an excellent time waster for those who are bored. Many people have complained about the very slow pace of the game, which surprises me, because this is by far the fastest AC game so far. You'll enjoy it if you love cheery games and customization. However, this game lacked some content for awhile, but is being patched in via free updates. Great game.

Being playing for more than a month and I like it. It's a relaxing experience.

Though. They **** need to fix the multiplayer thing, which is utterly trash and so disrespectful for nintendo's fan. I play solo so I don't care, and I will never pay for their online trash service. I would probably never have bought this game if it was to play with my friends or roommate (if I had one).

When I compare the first AC on GCN to this one, we can clearly see that there are improvements (fortunately, lol). But even if every single details are nice, I'm kinda worried that the interest will wear out in a month or two. Like every AC games. Which is sad because they really could find ways to update it and make it more enjoyable to play, with significant updates like in MMO games. But we know Nintendo, it's never going to be the case. We are going to have cheap updates every 4 months for Valentine, Halloween, Christmas, etc... and that's it. I got it for half the price so I don't really care, but this game is never gonna be worth the full price or the online membership to play with your friends.

So play it if you're solo and can have it for half the price, or just pass.

I'm sure this game is awesome, but too bad I'll never play it. I can't give a game a score above 0 if it isn't even playable to myself and many others (yeah secondary players can join an island, but let's be real they can't do much). Needing 1 console per player is insane, I hope they fix this some day.

I guess I should have searched for "Is Animal Crossing trash for the second player" before opening the game package(and voiding the return policy), but who would have though that would even be a concern. Well, it is absolute trash for the second player on the console. So unless you have multiple switches, and multiple copies of animal crossing, don't even bother getting this game if you intend to share with your family. I was OK with sharing an island with my spouse, but didn't realize that the game would make player two feel like a second class citizen, who's only goal in life is to work manual labor without any satisfaction of game progression opportunities. I absolutely love this game! The gameplay feels nice, and the customization is a step up from New Leaf, the first Animal Crossing game I ever played. Nintendo said, they would update this game for years. but i cant see that happening. when it released, you weren't even able to swim. on an island setting.... so that they fixed that with an update was just a must. all events are just the same with different settings. the rewards are meaningless and don't serve anything of value. it is simply aweful that you have to get all the furniture with DIYs from balloons and villagers and so on. you get way too many duplicates. its absolutely not fun. beeing forced to go in online forums and look for someone who maybe has a needed DIY. the shops are absolutely small. they offer so little products. its annoying. you can craft in bulk its just annoying. many things of this game are just there to take ages. just like the terraforming. but the devs had to make it as annoying and time consuming as possible for every single chore. because the game has absolutely nothing to offer gameplay wise. you cant do anything with friends. no minigames. no nothing. you are forced to make your own imaginary games. i simply cant understand how this game has a perfect score from official media. this game is incredibly shallow. all villager say the same everyday. they don't have any character. they are not interesting at all. have nothing to say. the game lacks so many features, furniture, events and gameplay from past games. the game still haven't got an update 2.0. its been over a year now and they still didn't implement anything of value to the game. all they do is recycle events and bring some more seasonal items to the game. they basically don't update the game at all til now. for over a year since release. (because the last big thing was the ability to swim. and this was simply a must. and even that wasn't even a new thing -.-)

and one more annoying thing... they don't listen to the community at all. they ignore everything. so its just worse that they make twitter posts on a regular basis everytime they implement another meaningless item. or recycle an event again. they got their money and now they just don't give a damn about this game anymore or their fans. oh and the multiplayer is just the worst. there is absolutely nothing positive about it. but that was expected. Nintendo has no skill for online experiences. they screw up every single multiplayer ever.

to end this review on a more positive note... there are some good things. the graphic is pleasing and the soundtrack is great. good for chilling. the rest of the game is nothing but a dumpster fire.

    tl;dr
    pros:
    - soundtrack
    - graphics
    - nostalgia

    cons:
    - gameplay
    - NPC AI
    - crafting
    - gameplay
    - all the time wasting gameplay mechanics

    - all the missing shops and villager from the past

    - online multiplayer
    - only one island per switch console
    - the ticket islands are just boring and repeat way too often and look all the same
    - items break way too quick with no indication
    - gameplay
    - building, placing and terraforming is very very imprecise and clunky
    - all events are recycled and the rewards are bad.
    - getting all the stuff from redd is just the worst. it can easily happen that you wont see him for month!!

Content-wise it has less content than indie games like Stardew Valley that costs six times less and it's miles better. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is severely lacking if compared to the previous ones, a lot of NPCs and shops were cut out, the villagers interactions are pretty dull and becomes repetitive pretty fast, the numbers of buildings went from 13 (New Leaf) to a baffling 4 in New Horizons. Also they got out with some pretty nasty and scammy decisions that tainted the experience for me like for example:

-One island per console. If you want to create another island, buying another copy of the game isn't enough, you'd literally have to buy another $300 console

-The game released pretty unfinished, and they got out with it by saying they would implement free updates. Well, one year later and those updates proved to be VERY underwhelming and repetitive (literally every holiday event is: collect this item on the map, trade it for furniture, repeat). And even after one whole year the game is still severely lacking compared to previous ones or the microtransaction one (Pocket Camp)

-Some RNGs in the game are pretty much broken, my art museum is still pretty much empty because the Redd boat was programmed to almost never show up in the Island, so unless you're willing to time travel (which shouldn't even be a feature) you'll probably never gonna complete your museum collection.

-After, like, two weeks playing the game you'll probably =burn out everything the game has to offer and the only thing left for you to do is to check the holiday events that, again, is pretty much the same thing with a new skin.

-The mini-games, common in every Animal Crossing entry, are non-existent in this one.

-Brewster, Tortimer and Kapp'n aren't in the game and probably won't be added

-The gyroids, also common in every entry, are also non-existent in this one

-The game is probably abandoned by Nintendo at this point and won't have updates anymore.

This was also perhaps the first time Redd wasn't in the base game at launch. Also the tool breaking function is really annoying especially when you're in "the late game." There really isn't a benefit to getting golden tools like in the previous games. The golden tools break in this game which kind of feels like a slap in the face especially for the amount of work you need to do to get the golden tools.

Overall this game is really fun and I enjoyed it. Annoyances aside, Nintendo's scummy implementation of game mechanics brought the rating down from a 8 to 10 to a 4.

The story to get k.k. (a dog who sings) on my island was fun and making my dream island is fun too.

If that add new stuff then it would be a 10 or 9!

When I first got my hands on animal Crossing new horizons I spent almost every awake minute on it.. Building my village from scratch it was very enjoyable and I found myself spending way too much time on it.

However I actually stopped playing the game after the Holloween patch I felt it was starting to get very bland and very boring real fast yes.. this could be because I did play the crap out of it but it was the similar situation on the Nintendo 3DS where I found myself playing for long period of time and then just figuring out that is quite boring and that’s coming from a guy who spent 200 hours+ on the game.

All in all Animal crossing new horizons is a great game to start off your Nintendo journey however play for as long as you like you don’t necessarily need to pay for the rest of your life but I do recommend you play it up to a certain point. A point where you’re happy with your village and everything is going smoothly. To which then you can probably move on to another game. The reason why I didn’t give it 10 out of 10 is.. I feel like Nintendo has started to throw in elements which aren’t really related to the animal Crossing franchise they just do it for the fan base or an excuse to hype gamers into playing it again.

I might or might not find myself playing it in the future that’s disappointing because I love animal Crossing. Also it has become even more bland as people have started to cheat and started selling Animal crossing items, money, tickets etc on the Internet which ultimately made the game even more dull as obtaining items have become meh.

New Leaf was an amazing game, one of my favourites of all time. My first year of playing, I managed to sink in over 500 hours. The game added so much, improved upon so much, it was one of my favourite video games of all time!

Then imagine my excitement when it was revealed a new Animal Crossing was coming to Switch. I was over-joyed! I was thinking about all the new possibilities, the new features, how it expands off of New Leaf! The trailer came in for February 2020, and then my hype was slightly narrowed down when they revealed Crafting... I was concerned at the time, however soon my concern would turn into a nightmare when I got the game on March 20th. I put the game in my Switch and was having a blast, however instead of what happened with New Leaf, where the game lasted me over half a year before I felt the need to take an extended break, it only took me just over a month to think that New Horizons should have been avoided. My Nightmares became true. The crafting was almost everything the game centred around, and it wasn't fun. Many objectives I was given, wether for Nook Miles or because of some Tom Nook stuff early on in the game, felt tedious rather than fun, like I didn't actually want to get these and look for these, but instead I felt an obligation to so then I could complete the game.

Then when I eventually got far in the game, I begun waiting for updates, because there were numerous issues the game faced. No Roost, No Shampoodle, No Re-Tail, no Shops besides Nook's Cranny and Able Sisters. The game was empty in features, and I sat down in my seat during every Direct, every trailer, hoping for a new building to be revealed. The realisation came in around Autumn, these were never going to come. The game was doomed to be a dissappointment.

The game was the first dissappointing Animal Crossing experience for me. I first started with City Folk / Let's Go To The City, and I loved it to death! Then I played Wild World for a short bit. Despite being a downgrade from the first game even, I still thoroughly enjoyed it for a more laid-back feeling, like you don't have to worry about coming on time for events as much, and you could go at your own pace, and it would still be fun. Then I played New Leaf, and like I said, one of my favourite games of all time, with City Folk / Let's Go To The City not far behind. Then I played the First game a few months after getting New Leaf, loved the game to death as well. Notice how all of the prior games to New Horizons, I loved playing like they were the only games I had in my collection. Hell, I even enjoyed Happy Home Designer and Amiibo Festival, and have started 2 towns for every game in the series, except for one... New Horizons...

New Horizons wasn't fun, and generally it was a mediocre - bad experience. It lacked the soul and features of other game, so you might as well buy those ones and their respective consoles instead, even if it costs more, it's still more worthy of the £50 - $60 price tag slapped on this, at best £20 - $25 experience.

One issue I would like to discuss quickly which can really show Nintendo's True Intent was that you could only have 1 island per Switch! So if you shared a Switch with family members, good luck trying to have your own independant experience!

Therefore this review will strictly be about how i found the actual game and its fun factor.

For my first animal crossing game i was excited, I understood what kind of game it was and I was intrigued. So I got it and for the first few days i was really enjoying myself, activities like fishing and designing my house was really fun. But thats really it over the next week or two i started to realise everyday i losing motivation to do any of these tasks and that's because they are very boring and tedious. Tedium was mainly what drew me away from the game, everything is just so slow for some reason. Crafting, digging, collecting weeds etc. all take so much time to do making whatever payout that you are getting diminish. I felt I was doing these tasks for no reason but to grow my village and have to deal with more of these issues. I had a dream of making a perfect island filled with cool characters as that was how the game was marketed, but progression is so slow; taking days to build houses, bridges and inclines meaning that dream of mine was hundreds of hours away. Why would a game make something so interesting so inaccessible for a majority of gamers.

Im a huge fan of Nintendo, but this game was boring but even when i had something to do it was bland, tedious and more of the stuff i had been doing for the past three weeks. Not to mention I never felt satisfied with the payoff for hours of work. Maybe coming from a similar game like Minecraft really impacted my thoughts on the game.

I completed my museum (all fossils, sea creatures, bugs, fish, statues, and paintings), terraformed my island the way I wanted it to be, and got the villagers that I wanted so now I am just asking myself "what do I do now?". This question has been bothering me for the longest time.

I seen all the events and they were fun for the time and whenever there was new stuff added I would be interested and try it out and then after about a day I get bored so quickly. I try to motivate myself to keep playing daily but it just doesn't feel good anymore. I have a lot of Nook Miles which I probably am not going to use given that I already finished hunting for villagers using nook mile tickets and I got amiibo cards last year. I guess what I'm trying to say is the game just feels stale and really lacks longevity. If anyone asks I did time travel. Only because it just took too long to like order stuff from the Nook Shopping and you are forced to wait a day until it comes tomorrow which was getting pretty annoying. I did the same thing when first building bridges and inclines when I was still making my island last year.

Ihis game feels like a Happy Home Designer 2.0 where it focus a lot more on designing rather than building a community. I try to feel more relax in New Horizons but because of how terrible the Villager dialogue is I just cannot do it. I took a break from this game, came back hoping something actually would happen for the 1 year anniversary but nope all I got was a cake and the villagers just repeat the same topics.

The earlier games felt like "here is a world, you are any average resident", while this one is completely centered around you. The fun of Animal Crossing is firing it up and finding out what's happening today, while in this one, nothing happens unless you make it happen.

It doesn't actually become like Animal CrossingI was super exited for this game when it was first announced. Animal Crossing is my favorite video game series. The wait was brutal, but was it worth it in the end? I'd say it is! The graphics look pretty nice, the music is cheery and relaxing, and the villagers are even more enjoyable than in previous games! This game isn't perfect though. It doesn't actually become like Animal Crossing for 10-20 hours. The good news is it's still fun during the beginning. The whole crafting mechanic is really only for those early hours. Once I livened up my island (cleverly named Island), I rarely ever crafted after that. I don't appreciate how desperate it is to be different from the rest of the series, because I really miss some of the old characters. I do love the new ones, and at least Dr. Shrunk isn't in this game... But I did have some problems. For one thing, why is there still a 10 villager limit? The first game had 15! Island is big enough to fit a few extra people (or animals)! I'd even settle for 12! Also when you use a Nook Miles ticket to visit a deserted island? It's a really cool idea, but the island is way too tiny, so there's nothing to do, and a villager will only appear there when your town isn't full. I really want to get some of the new villagers, but I can't when it's restricting your opportunities. Granted, I was lucky enough to find Judy, a new cub, on an island, but that was after farming like 10 tickets! Also, there have only been 8 new villagers shown at this point! Are those the only new ones? I mean, I really like them, but that's just pitiful. The amiibo functionality is good too, but the crossover villagers from Welcome Amiibo aren't in this game! I miss Inkwell... Also you just have to get extremely lucky to get a new villager. I really want Cyd the elephant and Raymond the cat in my town, but there's no amiibo for them... I'm suprised that I was able to talk about the negatives for so long... Now on to the positives! Let me just say I haven't been this happy playing a video game since...maybe never. This might be the happiest game ever made. I bet it could cure depression (I'm serious)! The characters in this game are way cuter and funnier here than in any other Animal Crossing game. Everyone has their favorite one/ones, but this gave me several new favorites, and I love my old favorites even more! This game also has a lot of funny dialogue (maybe more than Paper Mario: Color Splash). This game has so much personality, and I love it! Its just so much fun! Even pulling weeds is fun now! This game is my 3rd favorite Animal Crossing game, my 4th favorite Switch game, and is probably in my top 20 games of all time! It really satisfied my expectations. It was pretty much exactly as good as I thought it would be. Most games nowadays are either slightly better or slightly worse than you expect it to be. The delays and stuff were really painful, but it was worth the wait, and every Switch owner needs this game! (Also why are so many people complaining about the first player doing all the hard work for you? The others players get to enjoy Animal Crossing sooner.) Expand

Don’t get me wrong the game is fun but has some issues you have to overcome.

Biggest issue = One island per Switch Second biggest issue = Different Villagers having the same dialogue Other than that the user interface is testing your patience. For example, if you have a stack of say 40 weeds and you would like to take 20 to sell them you have to separate one by one until you have 20

Letting you click at least 60 times to do that. There are plenty of other such instances. It is just Ridiculous!

So I had written another review where I gave Animal Crossing: New Horizons a score of 10. On the anniversary of the game, I lower it back to 5 as the developers did NOT deliver the updates that they had promised. The game is barren, and nothing changed since last March when the game launched. For a long-term game like ACNH, this is unacceptable. Update by update, it just got more boring.

As someone who's gotten into Animal Crossing through Pocket Camp among other things, I enjoy playin' this game way more (even though this series would be right at home on a phone now), but it has many flaws and lacks a ton of things.

As someone who's gotten into Animal Crossing through Pocket Camp among other things, I enjoy playin' this game way more (even though this series would be right at home on a phone now), but it has many flaws and lacks a ton of things.

For one, the villagers should have their own unique personality to set 'em apart from each other. They're a main part of this little series, yet there's nothing interesting about 'em other than appearance. Personality-wise, there's zero distinction between, say, Beau and Puck for example. In general, you give a villager a gift, they mindlessly accept it as the best thing ever. The only reason to ever get attached to a villager comes down to their looks, not really what they say and it makes 'em bland. They never show any emotion other than absolute happiness. It's feels like a utopia (which I ironically wanted to name my island at one point). Everything is supposedly so perfect and no one ever has anything to talk about other than positive vibes only. It feels so feels artificial. By the way... I don't think it would hurt to have romance. It is fictional and the villagers have anthropomorphic qualities.

Anyway, special characters aren't much better. The Able Sisters, specifically Sable, is the only one of the three with any kind of interesting dialog and that ain't sayin' a lot. Now that I think about it... STOP with the non-existent conversation trees. Everyone blasted the hell outta Pokémon Sword & Shield for the same thing (if you could even call it that), but of all games, Animal Crossing should be actually doing it. What's the point of choosing dialog when it either amounts to nothin' or has the same outcome as the other choice. Anyway, there's another thing that annoys me: the island sandbox. Why is it that every game uses this formulaic Minecraft-like "world" layout (actually, that would be insulting Minecraft's world generation since it's actually vast compared to Animal Crossing's hub world generation)? It'd be really nice if they designed an actual world instead of just "Hey, there's this new thing happening right now. Here's your new home. Have a good life!". Oh, and why don't villager homes expand? It'd be pretty cool if they also invited you to their homes for whatever reason. I could imagine Muffy inviting me to a sleepover or Beau and Puck wanting me to watch TV together.

Another reason I'm mixed on this game is that I wish there were more activities to do instead of the same fishin', bug catchin', shell collectin', fossil huntin', flower planting, and island designing that's been in every game. With all these props in the game, you'd think you could interact with more than a handful of 'em in a more interesting way. Y'know, something akin to those two 3DS minigames from New Leaf, but expand that to certain items. Maybe have villagers occasionally challenge you to a match? Also, I think the game should really move on from the overhead view. It'd be nice to see everything with a free camera. It's aesthetically dull when every building or object is or has to be oriented forward to work with the overhead view.

I almost never use local multiplayer since I do thing on my own in this game and people got me covered on why online is lame.

It's dumb how cloud saves weren't a thing from the start (even though the way it is still kinda ass). Is cheating really that big of a problem in a game where you create your own experience? Are you serious? It'd be one thing if somethin' like this was runnin' rampant online in multiplayer games, but come on. If people rather stick to the legit way of playin', that's their decision. If people rather put their time into moddin' the game to speed up the progress or whatever, that's their decision. Simple. Whether they regret it or not in the long run is on them. Or god forbit someone simply wanted to have fun changing stuff on their game, affecting no one in the process.

I like this franchise, but there's a LOT of room for improvement; I didn't talk about all the problems or thoughts I had on this game and the series as a whole. Maybe some of the game's issues will be patched. I'm not optimistic though. The day this series upgrades from being a budget version of The Sims is the day I can truly call it good

How cool to be the only player on the console.
Well, if about the game - live, trade, build, fish, travel, catch bugs, pay a loan, pay a loan, pay a loan, rebuild the island. And you will find that you have only 3 stars out of 5.
The best life simulator for quarantined people.

It shouldn't get the praise it gets - Its a very basic game which can be easily outmatched by a number of life games on the switch. That's why I give it a 5 because the novelty wears off fast and hard and I haven't touched the game since. Won't be buying again

꾸미기에 중점을 두는 사람이라면 만족할 것 같고, 생활과 교류에 중점을 두는 사람이라면 실망할 것 같다. 대체로 나는 후자였기에 불호

I've put 1000 hours on this game. The update and DLC added a TON of new content. Tis a shame that this got review bombed by people upset that you only get 1 island per console. I kinda like that, as it makes you stick with YOUR island and makes you think more about the design choices you make. This is (I think) the best selling game of the last 5 years for a reason.

It had so much potential to add more life-sim elements through updates, but the developers couldn't be bothered to support it, even though the game is one of the best-selling titles on switch, with about 40 million copies sold so far.

A chill, slow, and relaxed experience that is a must in any casual gamer's collection. The slow pace admittedly isn't for anyone, but it's perfect to pick up for an hour each day and just explore your island.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is basically perfect. Full of wholesome content that helped us cope with the COVID-19 pandemics, the game keeps the heart of its predecessors while innovating enough to make it unique. It may not have won Game of the Year but it'll be the game we all remember from 2020, for sure.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a stunning new instalment in the Animal Crossing franchise, hindered only by its lack of immediate content, quality of life issues and missing returning characters and features While future updates will give the game long-term playability, for those already sipping vacation juice on their five-star islands, island life feels pretty mundane right now.

It’s full of detail, pretty small things, and surprisingly well working simulations and systems – everything polished in such a way that the player really does care about everything that’s going on. [06/2020, p.40]
