If mediocrity is your thing, then look no further. This reboot follows a standard open-world action game template while eschewing most of the wild sense of humor and chaos that made its predecessors (in)famous. Not a "bad" game after several patches, but it remains difficult to recommend at full price.

This one hurts. As an avid Saints Row fan; this breaks my heart. This game feels and plays worse than the original Saints Row.

Get Saints Row: The Third Remastered. That game doesn't feel like it's from 2006.

Saints Row is back and rebooted just in time for 2022 and guess what – it’s a piece of crap. This title stands out to be one of the worst open world sandbox games ever made. The bugs are everywhere, the controls scheme is subpar, the combat/shooting mechanics is the same as Agents of Mayhem, and the voice acting is immaturely pathetic. The biggest elephant in the house that made Saints Row one of the most difficult games I’ve ever came across to is its horrendous storyline and godawful dialogue. Once the opening credits roll, you’ll see why this game is really that bad and I have no idea why the writers from Volition gave this a pass in QA quality inspection as it felt written by a retard. Saints Row 1, 2, and The Third did not have that, but the reboot’s depiction of today’s satire in political correctness during the modern-day America did not work at all. Saints Row looks graphically amazing, unfortunately, it’s a piece a crap that needs to be avoided at all costs. Expand

I actually borrowed Saints Row from my local library, and even though it's "free" and has received several updates since the launch, I am finding myself struggling to like it.

For the most part, the gun-play is pretty solid, and there's some awesome moments (mainly story missions) that feel satisfying, and engaging. However, I strongly dislike the fact that there's no dedicated cover system. Instead you press down on the d-pad to "duck" and try to find cover in throughout the environment, which just feels arbitrary and tacky. Luckily your character is built like a sponge, and you can take many hits, but it downgrades the experience knowing you can stand there and take a lot of hits before you need to run around a corner and recover health. I also don't like how you can't switch your down the sights aiming from left to right shoulder. It is perpetually locked to the character's right shoulder, and there are times you really wish you could swap shoulders and perspectives in the process.

The biggest offender for me though the HUD. I wish it had options to choose what you want displayed, or at least resize the HUD and/or move it closer to the corners of the screen. It's too invasive, and often times smack in the way and blocks your ability to see when you're driving to a destination. Playing a mission that involves driving to your destination? There's a HUGE circle icon on the horizon that sits squarely in your peripheral vision, making it difficult to see oncoming traffic and even road hazards.

Also, the world that Volition created tries hard to be memorable, but it falls flat on its face. Everything feels bare, devoid of any excitement or strong attention t details, and the NPCs are beyond lame with their dreary ho-hum thoughts they say out loud. Everything just feels so cliche.

I am glad I didn't pay actual money to play this game, but that I was able to give it a shot and see if it was for me. It's not, and I actually turned it off after about 10-12 hours since it simply never got any better, and felt like a chore to play.

I'm looking forward to other open world games we're getting this year. Hopefully they don't disappoint like Saints Row.

Crashes and glitches. Assuming these issues are fixed a rating of 6 is more appropriate. An entertaining romp that is to tame to live up to what is expected out of a Saints Row game, mired with inconvenient mapping and a world that never feel full enough to justify it's space, keep this game from being more than a momentary diversion.

This is somewhat average game. It is neither terrible nor unplayable, despite some very nasty bugs. But there is nothing to write home about either. This game definitely lacks a soul. You cannot make a good black humor game and be afraid to offend anyone - it is like trying to make an omelet without breaking any eggs.
It can be played for a change for a few evenings and then forgotten

It can be played for a change for a few evenings and then forgotten like many other unremarkable games you will forget after a year or two.
For players who never played Saints Rows game before it would be 5/10 average game which does not deserve any hype, but does not deserve much hate either.
For players like me who did played all previous Saints Rows and thus unable to avoid comparison with predecessor - that is 4/10 and after playing for several hours I just want to go back playing previous games again.
In a few months after some polishing and removal of critical bugs this game can get +1 to it's final score from me, but that is all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finished the story and completed all ventures. I was held back on trophy progress due to a bug that will no longer track most of my challenges. The game is littered with little bugs that are in no breaking the game but there are a few that may stagger progress. For example, losing access to inputs on the controller.

A few weird design choices as well: first venture can be completed immediately after meeting a character but you will not get the full hourly pay increase(even though the game tells you that you have unlocked it) until after completing the story quest that unlocks ventures......

The story was mediocre at best, but I enjoyed it enough to complete it. The characters were a bit eh and I probably wouldn't care for them at all without the very few character story side missions.

Gameplay is repetitive, the aiming feels weird and recoil is extreme. Driving is OK but very bare bones. Explosions and over the top weapons are fun though.

All in all it's an OK game at best and I probably won't jump back into it even after bug fixes are released.

Sure, they had their over the top moments, but the character arc for just about everyone was amazing. From Troy, to Julius,, to Benjamin King, even Gat was great. Shaundi IN 2 NOT 3 was great as well. Saints Row was at its best when it wasn't trying to "find its own identity", possibly off. You were better when you actually were trying to compete with other open world criminal style games. Now we have a bunch of weird, quirky, unrelatable hoofs with their lame quips and 1 liners blowing stuff up. It has no soul at all. It's sad to see that sharp decline of Saints Row after SR2, but I guess this is what you get when some fans and "critics" praised the garbage that was 3, 4, and the Gat out of Hell Expand

Wow. I wanted to like this game, especially after I saw people review bombing it for being woke. I've played and loved every Saints Row game, even the first one, and after finishing this one I have to say it easily steals the spot of worst Saints Row game.

I don't really care about preachyness and wokeness in video games unless it gets absolutely overwhelming and becomes the entire point of the narrative (Life is Strange 2), and I have to say I honestly didn't see much of that in this. Other than the main characters being a strategically multi-racial group of annoying millennial hipsters, that is, and I only even noticed that because all the angry reviews had me looking for it going in. People have mentioned the character creator, and they're right, its terrible. Its nearly impossible to make a female character that doesnt look transgender. I don't know why this is, but I doubt it's intentional since the creator is so bad compared to the previous games. This game isn't propaganda, its just bad.

For one the shooting system is almost identical to the one in Saints Row 2 made over a decade ago. The guns give little feedback and are annoyingly unresponsive making the whole thing feel janky and unresponsive. This was fine in Saints Row 3 and 4 when there was a ton of outlandish weapons to keep your mind off it, but none of that is present here.

The humor is bad. There are definitely some laughs to be had, the writing isn't completely terrible all the time, it does have its moments. But a lot of that will be lost if you don't pick one of the 2 good voices available for your character, both of which are female. The voices this time are just really bad. The masculine black guy voice that I built my character around in all of the games from 2 onward is now gone, replaced by this whiny high pitched voice that sounds like Urkel from that tv show and its just terrible. Thank god the game lets you reconfigure the entire appearance of your character whenever you want.

The missions are ok, but they are repetitive and most of the open world activities are copies of the ones in previous games. This is fine, they are still a lot of fun, and the crazy over-the-top violence and explosions are still here, but lacking the humor of the first games. Sadly, the main story is nowhere near as creative as the original series, and it's also stupidly short, and heavily padded by requiring you to do busywork. For instance, in SR 2 dealing with the police anti-gang task force takes almost half the game, and its awesome. Here its just one mission, taking 5 minutes out of your day to intimidate an entire police force into submission.

The villains actually had potential, but they squandered it by loosing focus and basically forgetting about them by the end of the game. They introduce an entirely new villain in the last mission of the game. I'm not joking there, they seriously invent a new villain for you to kill just to resolve this disaster of a story and it is even more stupid than it sounds.

I don't know what happened here. There are some actually good ideas, like the new powers you get for leveling up. More grounded and practical than the ones in 4, the progression system could have been awesome but unfortunately they didn't add any more than that. Combine those skills with the stat buying system from 3 and 4 and this part of it would have come out great. Car and gun upgrading is breathtakingly simple, there are no specific upgrades you can get like in 2,3 and 4, just pump money into the gun to boost its stats. Boring as hell and way more primitive than the previous games. Its poorly optimized and crash prone (I had to restart it at least once every 4 hours, not enough to make me quit, but annoying), but no amount of extra development time would have fixed the problems evident in the gameplay and story.

Despite the failure this game is sure to be, I hope they keep making SR games, but when they do, it needs to be another reboot. We can't have a direct sequel progressing out of this, there are a few likeable characters, but volition has shown before that they can do MUCH better than this.

To me the first trailer had captured my attention because up until that point, Volition had never steered me wrong, as I was even a fan of Agents of Mayhem. I defended the reboot for ages. And then it came out. Instead of a story of characters growing into gang leaders and undergoing development, what we were given was a horrible joke of a Saints Row game. It was as if the very heart and soul of the series had been ripped out from it, leaving behind the basic barebones shell of what a Saints Row game could be, instead opting to fill in the rest with some Millennial caricatures that do not change or grow at all over the course of the game and repeatedly made me pause the game to sigh over the absolutely abhorrent writing. The missions are lackluster, the dialogue is absolutely laughable, the radio selection is just downright bad (are you kidding me? No 80's music?) and the removal of staple gameplay features that had been in the series since the first game is just a shame.

I wanted this game to succeed so badly. I wanted Volition to show that the Saints were still able to be just as wacky and serious when need be. They told us this would be a mixture of Saints Row 2 and The Third, my two personal favorites in the series, but instead they sold us an incomplete mess devoid of any creativity and magic that made those games what they were. Santo Ileso is a beautifully crafted place, I adore it and wish that they had done so much more than what we were given. Because as it stands, we have a big sandbox with tons of customization, but what's the point of all of that if we're just given TWENTY FIVE main missions. A laughable 25 missions, none of which have any of the spectacle or depth or gravity that ANY of the missions in any of the past Saints Row games have had.

Saints Row 2022 just goes to show that the games we loved are nothing more than a means to an end in today's landscape. I worry for the future of games.

If I hadn’t known anything about the game beforehand and someone told me it was a remaster of a game from 14 years ago, I would believe them based on design and gameplay.

Sanitized characters with very little humor and the whole thing just felt like a bunch of boomers and older Gen X’ers trying to write what they thought would appeal to millennials and zoomers. Student loans, yadda yadda yadda, late stage capitalism, yadda yadda yadda, evil imperialist corporation… If the Steve Buscemi “how do you do fellow kids” scene/meme were a video game, this would be it.

Driving and shooting is janky af, the vast majority of missions are just “go here, pick up thing, bring it back”, even the main story missions. The “gang building” is but a pale imitation of the first two SR games. Visually the game looks like something from mid-last gen only with volumetric fog and heat distortion effects for the hell of it -- but there's nothing here that can excuse the game's absolutely awful performance. Unstable frame rates, copious frame drops, stutters, extreme texture pop in, missing textures, the list goes on. And the list of bugs I encountered, many minor, some gamebreaking, would be too long to type.

26 hours played to reach 100% completion and I only bothered because I didn't have anything better to play at the moment. I cannot recommend this game, especially not to Saints Row fans. This is a dumbed down, forgettable, "politically correct" version of the Saints and it feels like a game the original Saints Row would have absolutely pilloried. Saints Row 4 accurately predicted this with their parody signs reading: "REBOOT IS DEATH". This is, indeed, the death of a once fun franchise. Rest in Peace, Third Street Saints.

I have played all the SR games and this is probably the worst one because of incredibly huge ammount of neglection and ignorance. It's practically a joke, as if the developers didn't know what the gamers really want.
I'll tell you what we surely don't want: 1. another game that looks like a sad caricature of any GTA

I'll tell you what we surely don't want:
    1. another game that looks like a sad caricature of any GTA game so far
    2. another copy of SR game with changed dialogues, but same voices
    3. unrealistic driving - hit the brakes in your real car as fast as in the game then go and smack the guy responsible for steering cars and bikes in this game
    3. as usual: no walk button on PC, every movement is way too fast - it really looks like an arcade game for mobile phones
Good things I really like are: character creation and that it's possible to change your character body and appearance any time as well as quite good voice acting, sound engineering and solid cut-scenes. Also: model behaviour (although too fast movement is a pain)
All in all, I deeply regret how this game turned out. There are almost no alternatives to GTA, which is stagerring, based on how many people like this kind of games. One of the only rivals of GTA present a game which is incredibly shallow. The question remains: WHY?

0 at launch a year ago, 3 at relaunch now.

Some of the same problems kind of still exist, story is a snoozefest, the world is mostly silent and lifeless, visual bugs where tips stay on the screen, bugs where you cant get out of the car during missions and the "new" map/activity finder is a shadow of it's former self. The 'nudity' is misogynistic because the female breasts are modeled

    It is off-putting.

This game is a terrorist attack on creativity and legacy. Not only on this franchise but on the whole game industry. Bugs can be fixed so they are not included in this rating. But the bad game design and censure are not fixable. Teach people to deal with the world - not make the world boring for everybody just to not hurt these peoples little feelings.

Dated, repetitive and very boring. Feels like a game that came out in 2011. Also has one of the worst endings in any game I have played in along time. There is no ending build up it just like the writers decided they ran out of time or can't pace a game. Do not recommend it at all

Saints Row had chance to be something much more, if only the team behind the game tried to take a more bold and careful approach.

he character creator still shines, but frustrating mission design and a disappointing plot make this reboot difficult to recommend. Far more sinner than saint. [Issue#19, p.92]

A really, really fun experience that is getting sh*t on for no reason other than groupthink, herd mentality and people on the bandwagon.
