Madden NFL 23 has refined the matchday experience and improved much of the gameplay to make this year a strong foundation for the future.

Madden NFL 23 proves that content is indeed king, as the modes included drive the experience and do a good job more than not. There are some glitches in the game, especially in some menus featured in some modes, but for the most part, the gameplay has improved considerably in this year’s title for those not to get in the way of the experience.

Madden NFL 23 is not the definitive football experience, but it is a substantial step up from the last edition thanks to the new gameplay features implemented by FieldSENSE. The general improvements are noticeable but not so revolutionary, while the graphical imperfections and the problems with the artificial intelligence continue to represent the Achilles heel of the franchise.

I believe the problem is that the gameplay, at its core, just isn’t addictive. Can I have fun with Madden? Yes, and I probably will have some solid moments with the game this year, but not enough to make it elite.

Madden NFL 23 does some things right and delivers a good experience on the field. However, it is marked by problematic game modes and a number of bugs and technical issues that playing it is frustrating and disappointing, even for the most passionate fan of the sport.

Despite its visual appearance and all the technicalities regarding how it runs on current consoles, the reality is that Madden NFL 23 was not the best tribute to John Madden. And all the good things we saw from the previous year, it did not have the slightest improvements to feel like this is that NFL game worth playing. Buy it in some offer. There is no point in spending money right now on this game.

The latest installment of Madden NFL makes an attempt to treat the passing of the titular football coach last year with reverence, but EA has instead missed the mark in ways that highlight the compounding systemic problems with the game franchise and the troubling nature of the company's stranglehold on NFL simulation.

First, I think Madden hit a great general design a few years ago at this point and this puts some good final tweaks on it. Second, the commitment to the John Madden dedication that is completely intwined in this game is emotional and fitting. Finally, this is my final purchase of any Madden game. I've been playing for my entire life and my team, the Bengals, finally have an extremely fun team to play as. I'm going out with a bang. Now, if they happen to win the Super Bowl or have some crazy impressive season i may consider this goodbye a "brief pause" to get that game, but then it'll be goodbye again right after that. Thanks for the fun, John (and EA)! Expand

However historically, I skip a few years each time, and I only purchase afterI have been playing Madden games for probably around 20 years. However historically, I skip a few years each time, and I only purchase after the football season to save on the cost. The reason for this is echoed in every review you see if every Madden game in recent memory: the improvements are often minimal or they take the game in the wrong direction, the games have the same glitches for many years in a row that are never ironed out, the balancing of the game feels really off to which you have to spend a couple hours playing with the sliders to have reasonably realistic stats and scores, and graphics/presentations that are just many years behind par. Most of these issues are present in Madden 23. It’s been a few years since I played Madden, but typically I play at least one franchise season (15 or so hours), but unfortunately I cannot get myself past half a season of this game.

To start with something positive that I truly appreciate about the game: They actually got the balancing done pretty well out of the box: stats and scores are pretty realistic. The negative counter balance to that is the extremely overbearing momentum meter. While I’m sure momentum was built into other Madden games, it is just way too obvious and way too present. One touchdown and an interception on the opponents first drive almost maxes out the momentum meter, which is fine and I understand what they’re going for, but when you are the team that is down, the uphill climb is extremely unreasonable. Players will regularly run poor routes, drop easy catches, and fail to make most blocks. The only way to overcome the momentum meter is luck, because skill gets dampened so much. It’s ridiculous and makes the game very frustrating, especially when you miss easy players or give up massive plays due to the same glitches you have seen for years. The teleporting ball, the ball that magnets into a receivers hands, the players sliding off of the running back, all of those wonderful glitches that I have seen for 10 years are still in there! The same weird character models are in the game, where the super stars look life like, but the lesser known players look ridiculous. Somehow FIFA has to model an absurd amount of players from a huge amount of teams and they do very well with the major leagues - meanwhile Madden can’t do one league of 32 teams. It’s lazy. The visuals aren’t bad, but they don’t feel like they’re from this generation and have a lot of lazy corner cutting.

As much as I would love to hate rate it a 1/10 because I’m tired of the only NFL game series to be such a lazy cash grab, I have to objectively give it a 5/10. It’s playable, you can have some fun with it, but the flaws are tough to ignore in this one and really ruin the longevity of how much time you can spend on the game.

It’s absolutely beyond me how this which I’m seeing happening to loads of people in multiple threads only leads me to believe that they didn’t even play the mode for more than the first week and game. The only good thing about it is that it was free with EA play Expand

Running teams win becauseA slight step in the right direction based off maddens past, but my god did they make this game not fun on offense. Running teams win because your o-line refuses to block, receivers will not get separation, and db’s read, jump, and intercept like any ball thrown. Can’t say I enjoy the enhancements to this game because of the other issues. Solid 1/10 in its current state could be 6/10 if passing becomes more enjoyable.

    Edit.

It is now may and I decided to see if any of the updates have made this game better. They nerfed man coverage into the ground so you cannot run it. The db’s still have 10x better hands than any receiver. The offensive line play is awful. Every down feels scripted whether or not a player on your line just whiffs not matter how good they are or how bad the defender is. I’ve seen the same terrible dt break a double team animation for the last like 5 years and it still makes me mad everytime I see it. Overall this game was an absolute waste of money and time. EA really needs to lose the license and stop making these games. But, idiots in the nut community make the game still profitable for them so it will never happen. Next year will be the first year in well over a decade (2005) that I do not purchase this game.
    Sad end to an era.

I love the franchise experience as whole, but the feature has slowly become more and more broken the past few years. This year's version is the worst I've ever seen, and Madden doesn't fix most bugs, or it takes them literally 2 to 3 months to do so. I honestly expect more from a company the size of EA and one who has exclusive rights with the NFL. When a game struggles to simply save your info, then we got some major problems. There are also bugs that have been in franchise mode for the last few years that still haven't been addressed. My advice is to tear down the existing franchise model, and start from scratch. This feature could be pure gold if they just made the effort. Also get rid of scripted plays in games as it has no realistic place, and just let the game play out naturally. Maybe hire some actual former players or coaches to assist with AI or formations and such. Expand
