The latest installment of Madden NFL makes an attempt to treat the passing of the titular football coach last year with reverence, but EA has instead missed the mark in ways that highlight the compounding systemic problems with the game franchise and the troubling nature of the company's stranglehold on NFL simulation.

Madden NFL 23 is a step-up when it comes to football simulation and gameplay, but it still carries most of the franchise woes from the last decade. It is undoubtedly a better game than last year's entry, but it still has a long way to go on all of its aspects, from the lack of novelty in the game modes to the frequent bugs and glitches. EA Sports has taken steps in the right direction, but they haven't managed to make a real statement on an entry that was supposed to honor the late John Madden.

You're never going to believe it but the game is stilly buggy beyond belief to the point of not correctly functioning. There is no day 1 patchYou're never going to believe it but the game is stilly buggy beyond belief to the point of not correctly functioning. There is no day 1 patch to fix franchise modes glitches so you're just stuck with a nonfunctional mode for an undetermined amount of time. There's over 70 feature that were in Madden's PS2 era that aren't in Madden 23. The NFL needs to open up the license because this game is an embarrassment to football and to videogames. We haven't had a good football game since Madden 08, and we haven't had a great football game since NFL 2K5. We're several console generations removed from good football games, and it doesn't look to change anytime soon . Save your money, don't buy this, and just accept that there won't be a good football game anytime soon and it won't come from EA. The Madden franchise is going to make me become a nihilist, nothing changes, the games continue to suck, football remains the most popular sport with no videogame capable of replicating it even a little. It just all feels so meaningless. Full Review »

Some game every year, no improvements, only more technical problems with no plans on fixing them.
