It is just boring. Puzzles are boring, fighting is boring, dialogs are boring and you can't hear all story because every time when you make some action you hear "let's continue in next time".

God of War: Ragnarok continues the epic journey of Kratos and Atreus with stunning visuals and satisfying combat. Character development shines, but the pacing feels uneven, and open-world elements occasionally distract from the narrative. Despite some minor technical issues, it's a solid addition to the series, earning a commendable 6/10.

A good game but it feels clunky and audio is subpar and not anywhere near as good as the previous game. Hitting enemies so they hover in the air waiting for your next hit felt great in GoW but in GoW:R it actually feels like they hover and wait for you to hit them. Smashing a tree in two sounds like a matchstick breaking and this lack of oomph in the audio is widespread - again unlike GoW.

For being a sequel this doesn't bring anything too newto the table,it's a pot of the same from the first game and like the irst game it has nothing to do with God of war at all,the combat and the characters has anything to do with the original game, the only thing that link with the original franchise it's the character Kratos but unfortunately it's only the name, the character overall it's a total diferente character doing things that it's pretty uncharacteristic for the Kratos character.

The game has a very good combat system, doesn't add nothing too new to the game,it feels more like an expansion that a sequel but unfortunately the very slow paced story makes with walk and watch characters speak most of the time with some pretty boring and cliche dialog instead of showing more of the story through gameplay.

I really think if this game wasn't called "God of war" it could been a way better game with some interesting story, but since it try so hard to keep the franchise name to attract more public it end up with a mediocre story that ends up interrupting a lot the good gameplay

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Is this a good game? Sure, it is fun and the story is good in parts. Is it a good follow up to 2018 GoW? Hardly. It is closer to Uncharted 4 than GoW 2018.

While 2018 GoW was not a very "open world", this feels like a game on rails the entire time. They went so far as to throw up asinine & arbitrary barriers in many places you've already been to when you try to revisit earlier areas.

The combat is a bit deeper, however the actual encounters are mostly much worse, especially for trash mobs. Whereas Souls games use creative combat and good skill sets to make even the trash challenging to defeat, GoW:R went with the "more health, more mitigation, more damage" route, and that's it. Kratos is no god in GoW:R. He's barely able to take 2 hits from trash mobs on the hardest difficulty b/c that's all they could come up with for difficulty.

In 2018, the story moved along with a very good pace without too many distractions. GoW:R constantly flips between Kratos/Atreus, Atreus/X, Kratos/Freya, Atreus/Y, Atreus/Z, just non-stop. The work you've done over the last 4 hours feels undone as you move from 1 setting to another, and the pace of the story goes from a gallop back to a trot as it tries to orientate you to the new chapter/character combo.

    Various other complaints:

    1. Way too much backtracking
    2. Lots of broken AI with mobs and your teammates sitting there doing nothing very often. Many difficult fights just break and the mobs sit there until you kill them (2 trolls did this, werewolves do this very often as well)
    3. Inappropriate jokes. Why is a Seinfeld joke in a GoW game?
    4. Unnecessary cuckolding of Atreus by Thrud with modern "sensibilities" feeling incredibly out of place
    5. No planning allowed for any encounters. Nearly everything spawns out of nowhere. This is a cheap trick to make the game last longer and nothing more.
    6. Several 1 ways that make no sense at all
    7. Another Playstation game that vastly overpads the game time by putting in far too much climbing. Do PS fanboys really enjoy this? It adds nothing to the game but annoyance and time. It isn't interesting or challenging like Breath of the Wild, a 5+ year old game on a much less advanced system.

Again, not a horrible game, just not nearly up to the same standards that GoW 2018 set. Anyone talking about this for "Game of the Year" is blinded by bias or paid off by Sony.

The story part of atreus early in the game is a sick joke. The son of the god of war in a disney adventure acting like a spoiled kid...no, and way too cringe.

+ Some characters have good design like Thor, Odin and Freya
    + nice looking snowy areas
    + heavy and perfect combat

    - A bit flat and cheesy dialogue from time to time
    - Bit boring design on some of the characters, very cringed and flat american design.
    - NFT looking ragnarök.....
    - Climax is as flat as an marvel movie
    - not much rewarding to explore the world

The combat is different and I can't explain it. Instead of a badass God of War eviscerating enemies, it feels like you are slowly chipping away at the health of most foes. Often you are fighting multiple foes at once, so when you are chipping away at one enemy another one is always trying to stab you in the back so you need to Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge out of the way every few hits. Makes combat slow and tedious. Doesn't help that the enemies feel like reskins of ones from the original game. I played 10ish hours and lost interest. Maybe I'll try again after some time and see if it get back into it. I might have to go back to God of War and play again to try and see if it's the game or if it's just me that feels different. The entertaining combat from the first next gen installment returns and goes deeper, as does the exceptional cinematic feel. To date I'm not sure I've ever played a game that has felt as much like a movie as these two. The single shot camera following without ever cutting has a lot to do with that, as does the character design and exploration.

Unfortunately said character exploration here, and the greater story at large, is frequently and on the whole awful. This is perhaps as textbook a case as I can think of of plot leading the characters, wherein the characters frequently make absurd and frustrating decisions simply to move the gameplay from one phase to the next. The central plot all told is fairly meaningless and difficult to believe from basically anyone's standpoint except Odin, but that too broke down when interacting w/ the rest of the gang. I frequently found myself shaking my head in disbelief and just waiting to move on hoping the story would get better, but it only got worse. The dialogue is also stilted and very poorly paced with long, long pauses in between lines for no apparent reason.

The climax is rather anti-climactic, and the final stage feels rushed and not to the scale of epicness the series has often drawn in the past. The level design is also pretty drab and repetitive, such that it doesn't really seem all that rewarding to explore some of the hidden areas, and most of what you're doing is just plugging along in the obvious direction you're being pushed.

These elements would probably not feel as bad if it weren't for the aforementioned cinematic quality the game does so well, but if you're going to make it feel like a movie, the story and design need to hold to such standards, and this does not (at least not a good one).

But it's still fun because of the great combat, and some intermediate moments of pathos for our heros. I'm not particularly eager for the spin-off they seem to setup, but maybe they can improve the story enough to make that more engaging.

Unfortunately, this one felt like a struggle for the first 20 hours, and that soured me for the rest of the play through. The story didn't feel like it got going until the first time you played as Atreus. Other than that is was; go here, press button, go back there, press button, since and repeat. It was really mind numbering and felt like filler. It also didn't help that the combat felt more like a chore this time.

The other thing I found really lacking in this one was the wonderment. Number 1 had so many jaw-dropping moments of sheer wonderment and imagination; Freyr's turtle/house, the realm machine, the realm of the elves Alfheim - I could go on and on. The variation of foes, locations, creatures, etc was inspiring.

The story in Ragnarok does have a lot of heart though, and is the best thing about the whole experience, but again, it takes way too long for it to kick into gear.

Overall, for me, it would have been a far stronger game with more wonderment and less bloating and filler. I've played it once, and that will be it, I have zero desire to go through it again.

I felt so much more freedom in GOW 2018, here devs are hand-holding the player all the time.

Ragnarök completely forgets what made GOW 2018 narrative so good - it was minimal but effective at telling a very personal story. This one tries to be epic but it's completely unfocused. For most of the game there is no clear goal or objective, the heroes just roam different realms doing errands, wondering what's next and where they should even go. And yeah, Ragnarök is coming... I guess. Kratos is a passive passenger in his own game, the rest of the characters are either a complete letdown (Tyr) of annoying (Atreus).

Gameplay is fine but it's wasted on trite mission objectives & linear level design. The game was supposed to be semi open-world but for most of it you're on a extremely linear path either in a straight corridor, combat room or just meandering, listening to endless exposition. Combat and enemies get really repetitive real fast. I don't recommend playing the game on higher difficulty modes. It's very poorly conceived - hard mode is more of a chore rather than challenge. The enemies become damage sponges and most get "super armor" (they don't react to stuns, staggers, juggle starters, etc). At some point I just changed it to normal:/

It blows my mind that this game is getting so many 10/10s and being labeled a "masterpiece". It's an extremely flawed title - the story sucks, the game is very linear and overly simplistic in its design, constantly taking agency away from the player. I really wanted to like this one but came away sorely disappointed:(

    pros

    - the game looks wow just wow the engine Santa Monica use for their games is just beautiful

    - the combat is a loooot better than the previous game

    - the music is just next level

    - map design although taken lot from the previous game is still pretty good

    - some of the designs for the Nordic gods is just perfect like Thor

    - really liked the standalone gameplay with Atreus he is to cool to play with

    - the boss battles in this game are a huge improvement over the previous one

    - they finally removed the useless side quests they added in the first game and just did 1 big side quest to every map which is just THANK YOU

    cons (oh boy)

    - writing is just trash i mean the beginning was 10 out of 10 don't get me wrong but after that the game just slows down and feels like a chore to play but back to the writing why is every encounter with the gods ends up in lets talk even the game sometimes contradicts itself by making Kratos or Atreus speak mid boss fight and even the boss will just straight up yell shut the f up why is there no bad guys ? the game tries so hard to show us the players every gods point of view and shows us that there are no bad guys just to shift the whole point they tired to prove at the end.
as you can see i could talk about the Disney like writing of this game for hours just because of how ridiculous and childish everything was

    - a lot of re used assets and enemies , felt like i was playing the expansion of the first (2018) game

    - when i said most of the Nordic god designs are good i especially said most because there are some that are just what the actual f is this this is not how this god looks why is that they nailed the designs in god of war 3 of the Greek pantheon but couldn't do it now ?

    - the maps feel small and don't really represent the realms in their scale at least in my opinion every realm has 2 3 small maps that combine and that's it really felt like im doing small dungeons and not exploring realms

    - ending had me feeling confused and weirded out no continuation no nothing just ok that's it bye
    with no proper send off

    - they finally gave us a third weapon but it felt like i could use more just feels weird to have only 3 weapons in a god of war game

in conclusion as i recognize with a lot of triple A games the gameplay is fun and cool but the writing is not good at all game felt like small messy expansion to the already decent with potential game that was god of war 2018 and that's why my final score to this game is a 7.5 out of 10 i would recommend it to new comers to the series or to people that want a game to pass the time but for people who played the og series as i said in my review of the previous game GOD OF WAR RAGNAROK doesn't scale up to the standards that the originals build up to

After the first fights with Freya and Thor the game never hits the same tempo or intensity. The end fights are very mediocre and rushed not something I expected from such a great and usually polished franchise. They also hint at fighting Ragnorok himself, but they throw that out the window real fast. Fenrir barely makes an impact for what his role should be.

All and all very disappointed with the scale of the big boss fights and the rushed ending. Just Baldurs first fight in GOW 1 created a ravine! That's how crazy the fight was. You'd think a fight against an even stronger opponent like Thor would cause something like that, but no. It starts off strong and when you fight him again it's pathetic in comparison.

I thought I'd make a platinum trophy after the end, but no, I'm not giving it that time.

I’m halfway through and always bored with Loki gameplay. First game was 10/10 but did not like this game that well.

They should have renamed it to Loki/Atreus instead of God of War.

Don’t get me wrong, there are few sequences that I have absolutely loved but game just feels flat apart from those sequences.

Although the game maintains its excellent gameplay from the previous game by making small changes, it maintains the same good graphics as the previous game, I feel that the difficulty went down a bit, I feel that the narrative also went down a bit, leaving many characters in the dark and downplaying some (Jörmungandr, Odin, Thor, Hraesvelgr, Loki, Forseti, Tyr, etc) I feel that although the fights with the Berserkers are quite entertaining and apply that level of difficulty that the story lacks, they leave a lot to be desired. to be desired compared to the Valkyries, I also feel that the Physical Appearance of some Gods like Odin and Heimdall leave a lot to be desired, as well as the fight with Thor and Freya, which are not the most epic that one would expect. Although I liked the game a lot despite the fact that Platinum was very easy, I feel that Cory Barlog set the bar so high with the previous game (God of War 2018), that it was impossible to fail with this game no matter how bad or good it was. outside. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to love this game. The 2018 GOW was one of my favorite games and Ragnarok more or less building on the same gameplay experience worked really well for me
But, the original game had a very simple story that played out beautifully, whereas the sequel fell totally flat. I didn't just not enjoy the story, I hated it. It was nonsensical, contrived, and the ending was deeply unsatisfying. An event - Ragnarok - which is more or less Armageddon, winds up being a very short, very uneventful, boring part of the game. There was more involvement gathering fruit in one of Atreus's pointless side quests.
The whole "be better" thematic overall I just found aggravating. I am more likely to do another playthrough of the original game than Ragnarok again.

Both Thor and Odin felt super inconsequential despite their hype, we barelly got to see anything special from the Aesir, Asgard as a realm was also super disappointing there is absolutely nothing new there and when Odin and Thor were defeated it felt weightless and unmoving.

Fights like Jormungadr vs Thor we didn't even get to see anything, so incredibly underwhelming...

All that aside this is still a good game to play, just don't get your hopes up from big names and popular cultural references such as a Ragnarok, this game lore wise leaves much to crave for and none of the main bosses are all that challenging even though they look pretty good animation wise.

Due to how underwhelming this game was I'm never getting hyped for this series again, but sure I'll keep playing it.

It was unfocused, very unlike the simple but well-crafted story of the first game. Some characters are introduced once or twice and I’m supposed to care about them—I just don’t. Too many moments were unearned. It would have been better if the story focused more on a few characters, particularly Thor and Odin, instead of getting sidetracked so much.

Ironically, getting sidetracked is actually where I thought the game worked best. The best parts of the game were in the large side quest areas like on vanaheim, when it could be just a game and not a story-game. It excels at that, but it left me disappointed because God of War (2018) was one of the best combinations of story *and* game I’ve ever experienced.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Half the game is great the other half is meh or just unlikable. The combat is still top notch. Everything feels smooth the graphics look even better this time around after just completing the original reboot. That said most of the story is middling at best. The new main antagonists are just not that great. Odin is some frail old dude who while smart in some aspects get completely out played at almost every turn and is not nearly as intimidating as his dead son Baldur. Thor is a cry baby who is incapable of making his own decisions and is constantly just get told what to do by everyone around him. He literally takes orders from everyone from his dad, to his wife, his daughter, atreus, and Kratos. Atreus is completely different from the confident partner he became in the first game. Arguing at every turn the whole game is basically about following his wishes while also trying to stop him from wrecking the 9 realms. Freya cries, like Alot. Almost everytime she's with you she's crying about how hard her life is like you don't have your own problems. There's also only really 1 OMG moment the whole game. Everything seems just interesting enough to not quit but never "oh my God that's awesome". Spoilers*** You never get Mojlnir. Thors legendary hammer that's talked about the entire first game, the hammer teased at the end, and the hammer included in the special edition. Yeah, almost never in the game except to know down some walls and iceicles. I guess I wanted something more and with no real big scenes other than the finale I was left under whelmed. Is definitely fun for the combat but if you're expecting something as interesting as the original, I don't think it happened Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics and combat are fantastic but its like the developers went out of there way in both games to make Atreus a completly unlikabe character. I recenty replayed Gow 2018 and its fresh why I hated him in that game, his constant smart ass comments and attitude. Its no different here, every section you play as him is a slog and you cant wait for it to be over.

The story is poorly written and the whole "LOKIE" character, the so called champion never does anything but find some mask pieces, that in the end goes no where. Both games would have been better with out him.

Every fight has some room you have to enter and some annoying dialog and if you die on harder difficultys over and over, you have to go through crack again and hear the same dialog over and over. Sections in this game are so annoying it henders replays.

This game is basically The last of us 2, forcing you to play characters and do gameplay that I dont see how anyone thought it would be fun, its padding at best.

The must be better and we dont war is played to death. Tyr is a pointless character, everything hyped from the first game never is fleshed out, there is no deeper meaning to anything in the end kratos does everything, boi finds a mask. This story is terrible and you will really notice how bad everything is on your 2nd play through on higher difficultys, thats when I started to despise the game.

The 10s are just as dumb as the 0s and why I am giving it a 5 instead of the 7 it deserves

It's unbelievable how someone green lights a weak story like that to a blockbuster powerhouse game as GoW. No god acts like they're immortal mytholocgical beings, all of them sounds and acts like the average north american you see in a B movie. Childish and shallow dialogues, let alone motivations. Freyr is a lowly guerrilla leader that uses **** explosives (!?) to fight undying asgardian einherjars.
Odin is nothing more than a common american gangster.
Thor is a crying drunk depressed because (?) *reasons*
And the final battle, omg, motivated by vengeance - as Kratos himself states multiple times in the 5 minutes before going to to war - for the recently murdered main character. After 30 hs of gameplay, the final battle motivation is the death of our buddy that just died for no reason at all. Almost everything that happened in the 30 previous hours is simply a inconsequential filler.

Although its a pretty good game, I wont lie; I found this game kind of disappointing, and nowhere near as good as God of War 2018. Before I talk about my gripes with it, I will address the things I felt were good about the game.

The characters and the arcs they go through are fantastic, and the development of their values and relationships is really well written. Without getting into spoilers, the endings to Freya, Kratos and Atreus' characters were perfect and well deserved, especially Kratos who grows the most of any of the characters. The graphics are obviously amazing so I do not have to say much more about that. The new characters introduced are also pretty great, especially Thor and Odin. The side quests are surprisingly fun, and I actually enjoyed these more than the main story at times, they were like mini stories and full of history and emotion. The bosses are also pretty good, I dont remember a single one that was not fun to fight.

Now for the not so good stuff. While I wrote how I felt the characters were well handled, I think the story is not nearly as good as 2018. It feels quite underwhelming, and often feels like it does not take itself very seriously. The pacing is just not good, its far too long and we spent way too much time in very boring levels. I genuinely had to force myself to keep playing at many points in the game, and couldnt understand why the developers decided to make some of these sections so long. These drawn out sections don't contribute to anything I felt. A lot of things that happen in the story feel quite rushed and not earned, especially with the Aesir gods, who's endings were quite unsatisfying. Odin and Thor are not nearly as good of characters as Baldur. Side characters come and go, and big events happen very quickly. I do not know why, but the world felt so much more alive and huge in 2018, and that game was beautifully paced and had an incredibly satisfying ending. The combat in this also is not good, the enemies are extremely spongey, and often will kill you with no way of you predicting their attacks. I often rolled my eyes whenever i saw the 100th wave of enemies. Kratos is also extremely underpowered here, he dies so easily to enemies we know he should obliterate, but for some reason he has to hit a normal guy like 10 times with the blades of chaos to kill him. The music is also not as well utilised as the first game, I barely remember hearing it in this game. Also 2018 had far more wow moments, moments I revisit to this day because they were so awesome, I dont remember a single one in this game other than the first fight with Thor.

Overall, while this is a pretty good game and has lots of content which I may finish in the future; its a major let-down for me as the 2018 game was basically a masterpiece. I wish I could say this game was better than the first and exceeded my expectations but unfortunately it was difficult to get through at many points. Nevertheless, I think this is a fitting end to Kratos' story but I would not be opposed to seeing him in a future game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While the game is good and has its amazing moments, it lacks in story, combat and UI. Biggest problem I had was the directionless and unfocused story. This is my biggest problem with the game.

    Characters:
Aatreus goes from wanting war to not wanting it to wanting it again for several times. While there is reason for it, the game doesnt let Aatreus sit with reason long enough to earn the change, specially when he changes his mind after short time. Biggest offender is when Brok dies, Aatreus talks about he wouldnt wanted war if this was the consequences of it, yet after creation of Ragnarok (Surtr) he start talking about how war is needed again.
Most jarring change is Sif who does complete 180 without any good reason that is told in game.
Ragnarok (Surtr) got in the way instead and Freyr died of unnecessary death bcs of it.

    Story:
Story feels all over the place. I never understood what Kratos wanted to do, felt like he was doing what everyone told him to do. Which made the game like bunch of storys mushed together.
Some parts where too long and unnecessary but other too short.

For gods sake just talk. Lot of the problem comes from charcters not talking trough it. It is cheap way to make artificial conflict.

    Combat:
Mob enemies has too much health, it just takes too long to kill them. They are also faster and stagger much less than the playable charcters.

    Companions doesnt do much.

Bosses didnt have much of spectacle like 2018 had.

    UI and the gameplay:
UI is a mess and its annoying to navigate through it. When you start your save file your placement is reset to start of mini area, while not that bad it is definitely annoying.

The decline comes from how much they throw at you from a narrative point-of-view. God of War (2018) is a straightforward, impactful story of a boy and his father going on a journey to spread the mother's ashes. Along this journey, bits and pieces of the world and its characters slowly start to get peeled back.

God of War: Ragnarok feels like it should have been a fourth installment for how much they ask of you to know everything about this world. There are so many moving parts to be aware of for the story to really makes that impact 2018 did and it never does. It doesn't help that the characters outside of Kratos, Atreus and maybe Freya are pretty unengaging.

It's not even that Ragnarok is a "bad" game, honestly it's exceptional as hell with an obvious huge budget attatched to it to help sell that this is a AAA game with new mechanics, worlds, engine improvements, etc. But that doesn't help the feeling that God of War: Ragnarok tries to do too much with too little setup.

Instead of acting (you are supposed the GOD OF WAR after all) you are only reacting. Every little fight turns into a game of 3D chess with zero room for mistakes. And that is at the lowest difficulty setting and all accessibility options enabled to make it easier.
After beating Ragnarok I played the first God of War again and it is SO MUCH MORE FUN!
I did all the extra content there, Ivaldis workshop and even all the Valkyries! But with Ragnarok I had many rage-quit moment was happy to put the controller down.
This is a major design issue! Dear developers, let us have fun! You are not the arbiters of what fun gameplay is. Don't force us down narrow gameplay paths just because you are so proud of some specific system or another. It's bad design and Forbidden West had the same problem (like more elemental damage types than you have weapon slots). Sometimes, more is less.
Also, what is with the fleeing enemies? Half of the time Kratos is running around, chasing after enemies. If I want to herd chickens, there are other games for that. There is little more annoying in gaming than enemies that make you chase after them constantly.
I'll go play God of War now... the good one, not the frustrating, annoying one.

Never experienced such a scorching disappointment. It's called Ragnarok, but there's nothing about the legendary clash between the forces of good and evil. Unfinished characters, rather poor bosses at the end. Fake prophecy. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay was fun and there were plenty of options for different builds depending on your play style. I had a great time exploring different areas and never felt overwhelmed by sidequests. Every area seemed to have a purpose to serve which made the flow of the game very well crafted. The visuals were impressive on the ps5. I enjoyed the game overall.. until the end.
The ending was disappointing. I didn't feel anything to be honest. I went through a very generic feeling battlefield, plot points felt useless. It was so much build up just to have nothing interesting or noteworthy happen. Ragnarok shows up to do... nothing. Glad that quests means nothing. Now that gos sacrifice means literally nothing. It make the games writing feel cheap. The finally vattle itself was.... not challenging. I didn't feel like Odin lived up to being the villain he was hyped up to be. Everything felt to easy, things felt unnecessary. I think the ending ruined it for me, great game otherwise

This game felt incredibly rigid, Kratos actually moved like a damp rag, almost like all that muscle mass was slowing him down. Even wall climbing I was like "Can we move a little faster on the walls...". The environments are very linear, can be explored in a "hold you right hand to the wall" model, and often offer too many hints too early to actually motivate you to explore and find solutions to puzzles. There is too much exposition. The game does do a great job of introducing a new generation of characters and storylines, and in some ways Kratos' sluggishness is most notice-able when being aided by his younger partners. The game feels much less open world than 2018, and there is a palpable lack of freedom. Perhaps the only truly novel thing here is the barrage of accessibility options, many of which are on by default, and kind of provide so much aid as to make you feel like you don't need to think much. The game makes some solid improvements compared to 2018, but the landscape of games in terms of fluidity and open-ness have changed so much in the intervening years that this sequel feels still behind. I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
