    Pros

The most remarkable thing about this game is the story and its narrative, there are points in the game where the narrative meets a powerful audiovisual section, which without a doubt can elevate it to one of the most epic moments in the video game industry.

Its cooldown-based combat system is fun and snappy, though you end up getting so powerful that the later stages of the game are a walk. However, the game has an extra difficulty for those who want a greater challenge.

One of its negative points was the high blur motion that the game presented, it has been recently fixed.

    cons

The secondary missions are poor, some give you good lore, but at the level of execution it is the simplest of the saga. That causes the game's rhythm to be broken by those moments where Clive becomes an errand boy, it is a point that overshadows the moments that he reaches excellence.

As a personal request I have found extra content missing such as: chocobo races, card minigames... It has been something that has been present in many FF and gave them duration and magic. In this game the only mechanics are fighting or running errands.

Conclusion: one of the most epic stories of recent years overshadowed by an unambitious design of missions and extras.

From the graphics, the music, and the voice acting, this is the best FF game I've ever played. The combat system is my new favorite for RPG games and I hope they keep it for future FF games. I don't want to spoil the story for anyone, so I'll just say if you're a fan of Final Fantasy, do yourself a massive favor and play this game.

Solid story and interesting lore with likeable characters with a very well-balanced protagonist, Clive Rosfield. The conmbat gameplay is incredibly satisfying with various powersets and great sword combat, although it is on the easier side so if you are looking for a big challenge, you may be slightly disappointed. It is not so easy that it is boring, but not very difficult either. The boss fights are also some of the best in gaming wit great set pieces, combat, visuals, sound, and atmosphere. Each one feels like it could be an endgame fight. The performance is consistent and the graphics are beautiful. The RPG elements are a bit shallow than previous games in the franchise, not terrible, but not as in-depth and i do miss the party system like in the 7 remake. The exploration in the areas desppite the graphis being great can be a bit weak due to some repititive side quests and uninteresting side characters outside of the main cast, but a few of them are still interesting enough.

By attaching Final Fantasy to the title, Square Enix has tricked many gamers into believing this to be a 10/10.

Does it have high production value? i.e. voice acting, music, story, art design, etc.
    -Yes.

Does the combat feel fun and rewarding?
-Fun yes, rewarding maybe not so much.

Does the world feel immersive? Does it feel interactive?
-The world (story) is fully realized. But you don't really interact with it directly.

Is the game polished? Performance steady?
-Bugs/glitches don't happen, if at all. But you're basically watching a movie so they don't have a lot of opportunities to occur. Performance is not great. Frame rate is pretty all over, and most of the character models aren't really "next-gen" even during cutscenes.

So in reality, this is a mediocre game with an army of die-hard fans waiting to eat it up. If this title was developed by a different studio, and had no relationship to any past titles, it would not be getting the praise it is.

This is not a bad game. But it is definitely not a great one.

Really, FFXVI is an interactive movie with okay combat. If you look at the game like that, it's pretty good. But if you look at it like it (should) be looked at, it's not that fun. It gets tiresome walking around, it gets tiresome fighting the same enemies, with nowhere cool to discover or anything interesting to find. It gets very repetitive as far as gameplay is concerned. The story is the only thing that keeps moving, and even that can get a little drawn out after awhile.

I find it shocking that so many people can be pulled into a stupor and think this game is a GOTY contender. You think pointless equipment options and mundane items are GOTY worthy? You can't even change how Clive looks. He eventually puts on that stupid Castlevania outfit and you get to look at that for the next 30 hours. This game feels like they wanted to do much more but everything got cut.

For example, characters keep handing Clive these "Seals" which show he has the person's favor, allowing him to be accepted by the local population. But these seals don't unlock anything. You can now start a side quest from a local npc, but you couldn't even talk to them before receiving the seal so it's not like anything changed. Maybe the seal lets you get past a gate, into a new area? No, that's just story locked. The seal is a just a story beat which serves that purpose. It's so dumb, the game always makes this point to make you feel like you're accepted into the community now but it's doesn't even feel necessary. People comment on the mark, but that's it. But it's not like you actually talk to people. They're just side quests and main quests.

To me, these "Seals" represent the overall feeling this game has. It feels empty and incomplete. It feels mundane and pointless. It feels like a very old game (PS2 era) with fancy graphics and modern flair.

Will you find enjoyment in FFXVI? Probably. I enjoyed playing it, for the most part. But did it feel like a 10/10? A GOTY? Not even close.

FFXVI is to action RPGs as Time Crisis is to first-person shooters. All on rails.

First off I love action combat in RPGs, but the fighting is so shallow and easy in the game a gnat couldnt drown in it. Enemy variety is abysmal and you stop running into new enemies before the halfway mark and they are all fought exactly the same. No strategy other than depleting a stagger bar then using a couple of big moves and repeat it ad nauseum. Thats egregious for a 20 hour long game

The world itself utilizes ps3 era design philosophies and feels either extremely lazy or low budget. No dungeons to explore. no meaningful gear to find. no puzzles to solve. no character to build. no party to control. The games side quests feel worse than most korean free to play MMOs. They offer no meaningful rewards or content to do and only try to shove the games main plot point down your throat incessantly in bite sized chunks. There are way too many of these as well and they always pop up in horrible spots totally ruining the pacing of an already weirdly paced story. There are a few things I did enjoy about the game though like some of the characters and a few of the boss fights werent terrible. I also appreciated the grounded approach to story telling, but that almost is fully abandoned by the end with what I can only describe as the "god is the badguy" cliche and you have to prove to him humanity can survive. It really feels out of place in what was a somewhat intriguing political fantasy tale although it did rely on game of thrones tropes too often. All in all I dont HATE the game, but it honestly feels like several steps back from FF12 which is what it seems to want to emulate. It feels watered down and the budget feels like it was only placed in visual fidelity rather than actual game design. Ill say its a personal 7 out of 10 for me.

It's not even a footnote to HEAVENSWORD, why Joshua was using a false name, why the Dominants were born that way, how Clive was treated for 13 years, and that is not told at all.

Don't you realize what was wrong with FF15? Moreover, even the main quests were made to do stale errands like the three most important delicacies, and they were nothing but a painful experience. I don't like Artema's motives, like shifting the blame, and I don't feel the need to have more than one Artema.

Not talking about it is not always a good thing, in fact, FF10, which explained everything, is still talked about as a masterpiece, and Final Fantasy when Sakaguchi was around told all story.

I think it's time to research once again why those works were so popular back then.

And The music is too classical, which kills the original battle background music of FF.

Final Fantasy should have hot progressive rock battle music, like Nobuo Uematsu's, and fixed battle music, and FF14 does that.

Why didn't it? They said, "We made it classical to fit the worldview of Game of Thrones homage"? Don't ficking kid yourself, even FF11 even came out with a progressive block in the assault area! The only ones that didn't are Tactics and 12.

As for battles, they are exhilarating, but there is no freedom of strategy. In that sense, it feels very monotonous. Where is the variety of black magic? Why can the enemies use Cure and Protect, but not Clive?

The UI is also hard to look at and doesn't fit Final Fantasy.

It fits because of the game design of Bayonetta and Devil May Cry.

However, it is not all bad. The direction of the action is not bad, and I hope that the ATB of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the action of this game will be combined well. That is what I think is the perfect Final Fantasy battle system, and the command elements should not be discarded.

There were some good parts, I enjoyed it until the midway rush, then it stalled after Artema came out. It's sad, Yoshida, because I had very high hopes for it.

I love your Final Fantasy 14 very much and still enjoy playing it. Why didn't you ask Natsuko Ishikawa to do it? You knew that Maehiro's A Realm Reborn scenario was not well received.

He shines because he is a planner and battle designer, I don't want you to adopt his narrative.

Yoshida, Takai, and Maehiro should leave Ivalice.

Final Fantasy XVI (FFXVI) marks a welcome return to the series' high fantasy roots, backed by modern gameplay mechanics and storytelling. The game presents a magnificent new world, packed with magic, medieval aesthetics, and mythical creatures, a refreshing shift from the futuristic environments of recent installments.

    STORY:

FFXVI tells a rich, mature tale filled with political intrigue, ancient prophecies, and moral quandaries, reminiscent of earlier Final Fantasy entries. The narrative beautifully balances the human drama with the grandeur of its fantasy world. Characters are well-realized, each with their distinct motivations and growth arcs, making them compelling and relatable. However, the story can sometimes feel a bit too complex and confusing, perhaps a common trait for the franchise.

    GAMEPLAY:

The combat system is a blend of real-time action and strategic command-based elements, giving players the best of both worlds. It retains the complexity and tactical depth of previous games while incorporating a sense of urgency and dynamism seen in more action-oriented titles. The character progression system is deep and rewarding, providing players with an array of customization options to suit their preferred play style. The inclusion of iconic Final Fantasy summons, portrayed with unprecedented scale and cinematic flair, further elevates the experience.

    VISUALS AND SOUND:

Square Enix outdoes itself in the visual department. The game is breathtaking, featuring highly detailed character models, stunning environments, and impressive special effects. The music, as always, is phenomenal, combining classic themes with new compositions that perfectly accentuate the emotional highs and lows of the story.

    PERFORMANCE:

On the technical front, FFXVI runs smoothly on next-gen consoles, offering a consistent framerate and quick load times. There have been a few reported minor glitches, but nothing game-breaking. It's expected these issues will be addressed in future patches.

    CONCLUSION:

Despite minor hiccups and a sometimes convoluted plot, Final Fantasy XVI stands as a notable entry in the franchise. It beautifully intertwines tradition and innovation, blending a return to high fantasy with contemporary gameplay mechanics and storytelling. For fans of the series or newcomers looking for a rich JRPG experience, FFXVI is a journey worth embarking on.

After Yoshi P bragged about how the game was finished months ago and wouldn't need a day one patch you would think the games performance would be able to atleast hold a somewhat consistant 60fps in what is supposed to be a fast paced action game but I guess that's simply expecting too much from this team. Probably the only good thing about the game are it's visuals and the games impressive boss fights. The sheer spectacle of these fights combined with an outstanding soundtrack make these fights feel truly epic, they're also some of the few fights in the game that don't immediately melt to mindlessly spamming your abilities and actually seem fairly well balanced for the games mechanics, unlike regular and "elite" enemies which make up the majority of the games combat. Unfortunately they're too few and far and simply aren't worth putting up with the meandering busy work the game puts in between them. Expand

This game has one of the best cutscenes i've seen in gaming industry, the eikons battle are truly iconic and action packed.
The story is pretty good with awesome characters, that are so iconic as Auron, Cid(FF7), etc.
The game soundtrack doesn't disappoint bringing ones of the best OST since FFX and one of the best of the franchise.
For me the only issue that really exists is the lack of exploration, since in fact the rewards are bad and you do not feel really rewarded for exploring every corner of the map. Sidequest are ok, people always complain about most being fetch quests, but they are exactly the same people who play hours of MMO's with the exactly same issues.
FF saga clearly is changing, and im ok with that if they bring a good story, OST and gameplay.
My real score is 9/10, but to opposite the agenda that is being made against the game im giving a 10/10.

PROS: Great story, characters in this game are likeable, Visually stunning, profound lore with active time lore (great features). Also, the ending of this game is very satisfying. I planned to New Game + right away to experience new challenges.
CONS: performance issues, motion blur, 50% side quest I didn't like, lack of RPG elements.
Conclusion: The best Final Fantasy game since Final Fantasy 12

    Parties, exploration, dungeons
The combat is ok, just ok.
The camera angles are really bad during the fight, and without a mini map (a small complaint) your pulling to the world map to see what direction your wound up facing after a fight. Minor annoyance, but it's there.
What we end up with is basically an interactive movie unless you do the (mostly sadly lacking) side quests.
At this point I'm at the end, the final battle? And I skip cut scenes, fast forward through dialogue.
    It's such a slog...
Is it a good game? Yes indeed it is, Is it a great game? (Like most people believe)?
    Nah...
Definitely not the "game of the year" Disappointing

Solid combat, incredible Eikon battles, mostly terrible everything else: poor writing, sloggy quest design, largely uninteresting characters (save a couple standouts). The game ping-pongs between highs and lows with disorienting regularity. If not for the disaster that was FFXV, this would be my least favorite FF.

I paid 70USD buying this game and I have the feeling that most part of the game is about going from A to B to speak with someone or get something and then return to A to finish the quest with and extremely bad designed npc (those faces, those movements when leaving tbe conversation...)
I'm a die-hard FF fan. Where are the magics? Where is the looting/item customization? Why the only freedom I have to make Clive stronger is to go after any quest to the blacksmith and buy the mandatory sword? I'm an almost at the end of the game but it is taking effort to turn on the PS5 and keep playing. I think I have died once so far so where is the challenge? In my mind FF games where about leveling up, finding better gear, exploring, using magics and state ailments. I understand the new direction, more action focused, but not at any price. It is 2023 and I had to download FFVI to play it at the same time because 16th makes it really difficult to be motivated. I got to the point that if it was possible I would kill all those people in the hideaway. All of them. All of them so woke, so good people. Come on.

Benedikta and Kupka where very nice villains, but they leave very quickly. The eikon battles are like a film, you mostly do not need to do anything at all. The world is stunning, that is true. And the story as well, credit where is due

Crafting is only for the latest equipment which will always just be a slight stat increase. Gil is almost worthless except for buying in game soundtrack. The combat is flashy but once you find the combo that works for you it gets repetitive and boring and I found myself avoiding battles while traveling because I would rather use my time and combos on storyline battles. I do think this is a problem with it being single character focused and if they had done stories and battles with other party characters (Jill, Jonathan, Cid) it might have kept it a bit fresher.
A mini map in the top corner or a compass would have been very helpful as well as I found myself constantly checking the map to make sure I was heading the right direction.

Its a fun game that is heavy on cut scene stories but story itself makes the game so worth it.

I view the series as a light hearted adventure: fun, whimsical, charming, etc. However, I truly did not expect the brooding and oppressing take on Final Fantasy XVI, and as an older gamer, I truly appreciate it. The story and side quests didn’t always have a happy ending, and they were incredibly well written and engaging throughout. Boss fights. Boss fights are **** epic; all I’m going to say. A couple of gripes I had is the lackluster crafting system, and the performance.

Mechanics: It is a really fun game. You can decide if you want to play it easy, or a little bit more hard. It is not a souls game, so don't expect to do the bosses 20 times, but if you choose action mode and you don't use the rings, you can have a nice experience that requires a bit of technique. Of course as you progress in the game it gets easier, like basically in every game.

Exploration: It is like Final Fantasy XII. Almost exactly, if you don't like that this is not the game for you. I loved it.

Graphics: They are amazing, the characters are really expressive and the scenarios are beautiful. There is a lot of different scenarios, unlike FF XV. Sometimes the NPC faces are a little bit stiff.

    Music: GOD

Story: This part is 100% subjective, that is why I started my review recommending to play the demo. The game is dark and gloomy and sometimes it has a lot of dialogue and cinematics. If you don't like that, this is not the game for you. If you like complex, rich and interesting lore, this is the game for you. Of course as EVERY JRPG in history, it has its fantastic and weird elements, so expect that.
I loved the story, I get really attached to the characters and really got me emotional.

In conclusion I LOVED THIS GAME, and I love to see the way the saga is taking. Also the publishing was clean with no delays and an amazing marketing. The game doesn't have issues regarding bugs, it is very polished.

Do not be fooled, those disgusting things, make even "non-white" youtubers and reactors cringe at the absolutely, positively pathetic reason that they're "boycotting" the game for, to those people, I can only say one thing: get help.

For example, the world building and environments are great. You see a town/place and it feels lived in, the people actually feel human and there's a veritable amount of lore/extra stuff to find out as you wonder around. They clearly planned this out to not feel generic and it shows. There are linear parts BUT you can explore larger areas to your heart's content. Yes yes, the side quests there are a few and they aren't Witcher 3 style quests (at least so far) but they are incredibly voice acted and add a lot to the lore/story. You learn about the world through these and there are some interesting tidbits thrown in.

I feel like a large amount of people will love this, I feel like it will be judged unfairly based on what people wanted it to be but go into it with a fresh face not expecting the old, this is Final Fantasy and to me I am having a blast. I'm currently starting a New Game+ after finishing the game the first time around and already I think this is at least the best FF since FF10. Epic, amazing visuals, sublime combat and compelling story.

I’m glad Square Enix made this an action RPG. Turn-based hasn’t ever appealed to me. This is my first Final Fantasy game and I really like it so far. I can’t think of any negatives. An overall enjoyable experience.

The short of it is that so far this is goty, no question about that because this is a strong package with so many strong parts. One thing to note though is that this is imho not an rpg but rather an action game with a really well written and strong story.

    On toward those parts.
The parts that can not be question, unless you want to hate on the game for some reason.
Graphics: 10. The game looks great, the areas looks great, the art design is top level.
Voice acting: 10. Everyone delivers and every performance is belivable.
The game works, so no reason for a 0 now is there.

    What is my opinion man.
The story: 10. The phasing, how the story goes from peaks to peaks with time between to build the world and characters. And those peaks, wow, simply wow.
The music: 10. Soken does his magic once again. The music always fit what is going on. Epic fight = epic music. A moment to relac = calm music. And so on.
Controls: 10. The way the game is controlled is explained very well, outside and inside combat it simply works as it should.
Combat: 10. I notice that the man in charge has worked on Devil May Cry 5 AND Dragons Dogma. The combat is visual, cool, fast, responsive, epic when it needs to, with a low level for entry but a with a lot of room to master.
Accessibility: 10. There are two difficult levels and other ways to make the combat work for different players.
Side quests: 10. Mentioning this since some seem to disslike the early ones. The early ones are there for a reason to tell you something, the first ones are short. Later on in the game they fill out the main story and the world at large.

There are a lot of 10 here, but the thing is that the game is just such a strong package singe the parts in this package are all so strong. And there I managed to review this story heavy game without a single spoiler perhaps I should have written meh and marked it as a spoiler.

Some of the best graphics ever displayed on a console. Truly 'next-gen.' Music was amazing throughout. Atmosphere and world-building were great. Voice acting was stellar. Combat was decent.

Side mission were appalling. Apparently they get better late on but by then I had learned to ignore them. Early ones are truly criminal and an insult to the player's time and intelligence.

THIS IS NOT AN RPG. There is no reason to do those side missions because the loot is common and found elsewhere (except for a small handful of late-game missions) and there is nothing to craft. Bosses drop materials which are crafted into the next weapon you're 'supposed' to have. Each sword only has two stats. There is no armour and no real 'build.'

Story is great at first but gets boring late on. There is over a dozen hours of cut-scenes and whilst some look great, many are just talking. I started skipping all cut-scenes late on.

The mission design is out-dated. Walk, kill enemies, walk, kill enemies. Cut scene. Rinse and repeat. Even though you have different elemental powers, THERE IS NO ELEMENTAL DAMAGE! Fire swords hurt fire enemies the same as frost enemies. WHAT. AN. OVERSIGHT. It's all just for show.

Boss battles are epic and the main reason to play this game. Gorgeous, over the top and beautiful.

No mini-games or the ability to play as another character, other than brief moments where you become a monster. Gets stale after a while. Mechanics could have done with some variety.

Too easy. Just keep spamming the same few abilities and you'll destroy 90% of the enemies, which lack variety. Hard mode is only unlocked for NG+ and most people won't have the stomach for a second playthrough.

Generally, I was disappointed because I had high hopes of something deeper and more strategic. FF7R is much better. That said, why would I still give it an 8? Well, there are a handful of moments in this game that are simply jaw-dropping and set a new bar. The epic boss battles are unbelievable, the graphics are gorgeous (although the game struggles to maintain 60fps in same simple areas) and you can easily get lost in the deep lore of the world.

Definitely worth playing, if only to see what you bought a PS5 for. I'm tired of indie games that look like 16bit games. I bought a PS5 because I wanted futuristic graphics, and this is it.

A very flawed, but nevertheless unmissable, epic adventure. Could have been a masterpiece. It's not. But it's still worth a week of smashing through it.

After XV i was sure this game goes to same category, but HELL NO! Huge improvement!
This is totally masterpiece! Music gives me goosebumps, voice acting (especially CID) is top tier.
Plot is dark, sad, surprising and it just flows forward like watching a movie.
One of the best games ever and it goes starigth to TOP 3 of FF series.

No need to lie about the issues the game has. Frame drops, graphical quality drop in areas, quite some side quests are not interesting and the msq having fetch quest seems like it was made to extend the duration or world build without much cutscenes. You can clearly feel the FFXIV influence.

Now all that aside. The story is VERY good, it's a step in the right direction, the combat is well

Now all that aside. The story is VERY good, it's a step in the right direction, the combat is well designed, in an Action RPG. Like they said. Action. Rpg. Like 7 Remake, Ys, FFXV, Kingdom Hearts, Nier, Witcher and thousand others. FF hasn't been turn-based since FFXI. Anyone to say otherwise probably never played the series for over 20 years.
The music has been the most Final Fantasy I've heard lately. The voice acting, the portrayals are really good. As for RPG elements- they're present to anyone who plays RPGs. Leveling, skills, equipment, magic. Final Fantasy elements like magic names, Eikons, crystals, grinding for weapons and all that.
It's far from the best FF- too many issues that shouldn't have been at launch, but it's definitely a good one. Between 8.5 and 9- definitely not a 10.

It's alright to dislike things, but to trash it because it doesn't cater to your taste (even tho it hasn't been your taste for years). You're not a gamer or a fan, you're just entitled.
All that said, I can't wait for Game of the Year, between Resident Evil 4, Starfield, Zelda, FFXVI and what other games come out in the future.
One thing is for sure, the GotY medley will be lit.

Clive feels smooth to handle in and out of combat along with a training room much a like to a training mode seen in most modern fighting games this game is a joy to play no matter your skill level. Story: I'm hooked. The game plunges you into this medieval fantasy realm and gives you the choice of learning the lore through the perspective of Clive or you can access active lore with the press of a button. Along with NPCs that unlock along the way with the sole purpose of collecting and explaining lore about the world and it's characters. As a fan of darker stories such as Nier: replicant, drakengard and berserk. I find the story here has some comparisons to them without being too dark and heavy. The game knows when to break up these dark and depressing moments without making light of the situation and keeping the gravity of each situation intact. The characters are memorable and well written and certainly have a little sprinkle of past Final Fantasy titles in them, it feels like a natural progression of final fantasy. Graphics: The PS5 works well for this title. Square-Enix have been known to push boundaries of a consoles capabilities in the past, while many game companies now can make beautiful games I wouldn't say this one is lacking either. The magic effects and background scenery are truly breathtaking at times while the backdrop of villages and towns feel somewhat familiar to some I've walked through in real life. Music: Soken has done it again. Incredible sounds of choirs for massive moments, single guitars for quiet moments and even more electronic sounds for SPOILER. Final fantasy xiv fans will be pleased to hear one or two little moments that sound familiar to them but don't get me wrong this isn't just FFXIV with a bit extra. There's an entire new feel for this title and the battle themes will stay stuck in your head. Honestly cannot wait for the soundtrack to be released. Overall: everyone has their right to a personal opinion but it's just that. Personal. My favourite final fantasy games are: FFVI,FF:TACTICS, FF:CRYSTAL CHRONICLES, FFIX, FFXIV and now this is on that list FFXVI. Everything works wonderfully to draw you into this realm, not all of us old players of Final Fantasy are sour and wishing for the old days. I embrace all the new final fantasy fans this title will bring and I'm thankful to the team who brought this to us. If you want to play an older final fantasy they all still exist and you are free to play them at any point but I feel if you are expecting the exact same as 10,20,30 years ago then you might just benefit from embracing something new for a change. Otherwise you are denying yourself this wonderful experience for the sake of your perception of 'tradition'. Expand

Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
