This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. About half way through the msq and I have had an amazing ride so far! The graphics are stunning especially the battle cutscenes! I feel pumped up every single major battle!

The music is also good and some of the tracks are total bops (especially the ones in major battles).

I am loving the story so far and I think it has a really good main romance if you are in to watching a good slow burn ship.

The side quests are the usual side quests in jrpgs. I actually have been reading them. Normally in jrpgs I like to skip the dialogue for side quests and just get them done. Are some of them “boring” fetch quests? Yes, but there was only one so far that I felt was super boring and could not wait for it to end and it was one of the last ones that I did. I have done every single side quest and hunt when they appear so far. All of the side quests do give better world building and look at the people in the world and how they are dealing with the difficult circumstances so I do recommend doing them. Most of them take no time at all to do. Some of them also lead up to you getting a trophy for the in game trophy shelf (like some of the apples or a chocobo saddle), ability to ride chocobos, or increased potion potency when you use potions. It may not be anything flashy as a reward (so far at least) but it still gives you something and you get more background story. As for the hunts, I really have enjoyed those battles.

There is basically no exp grinding in this game. I personally look at that as a plus though. I am also not using any of the help rings that the game gives you but you can make the game more difficult or easy to your liking which is nice. I love the battle system as well. It has been very fun especially when you stagger the enemies. There are a handful of characters I really love so far: Clive, Jill, GAV, nektar, Joshua, and of course CID!! Cid in this game has to be one of my favorite characters in the whole entire franchise so far. I 100% recommend anybody to play this game!

Although I don't like medieval settings in games and was hoping for a typical mix like previous Final Fantasy games, I got hooked by the great storytelling and the lovable characters.
I deducted one point for the gameplay which could be better and feels plain after some battles.

Amazing game. Beautiful story, well written characters, fun gameplay, god tier OST. My only issue is minor things like being unable to sprint in towns which can get a lil annoying when doing the side quests .

Do not listen to the people review bombing for it not being a "Real final fantasy" This game is all final fantasy. It is easily the best final fantasy since X. (not counting XIV)

Amazing game overall, one of the best FFs I have ever played, I’m glad square allowed a grimmer fantasy twist to the story than in previous games. Don’t expect an open world RPG. This is a very linear game, so just enjoy it for what it is. I would have given it 10 stars if the enemies were more challenging and the item/weapon upgrades weren’t as linear as the story.

Modern approach to gameplay that respects and preserves its roots. At times a bit of an empty world lacking incentive to explore outwith the main plot. Could use some more humour and tongue in cheek dialogue as it does take itself a bit too seriously at times. Seems to be a another case of rushing a game out before it's finished, but still fun to play.

The visuals are breathtakingly gorgeous, the combat is fun if you are a fan of action-based gameplay, and there's enough variety within builds for you to not get bored. Tack this on with a story that leaves you always itching for that next high, then proceeding to exceed your expectations and you could quite literally call this a masterpiece. The game is not perfect however. The pacing of the story can feel a bit slow during the middle sections, and some of the earlier sidequests are a bit boring and unnecessary. The lore of the game is also not always presented to your face, and to get a full understanding, you may sometimes have to speak to the loremaster for extra info. But if you can get past that, its very easy to see this game becoming many people GOTY for 2023. Expand

The strengths here greatly outshine every weakness. The story, worldbuilding, setting, character development and design, tone, art direction, boss battles, voice acting, HUDs, music and graphics. All these are all full 10/10, with the boss battles and music peaking at 11/10. Combat could do with one more Eikon and one more ability for each Eikon, but aside these, it’s incredible good and deep. Boss battles are the peak here. Definitely the best action iteration they made so far with Final Fantasy, leagues above FFXV. 9/10 for the combat. Exceptionally good, I just want a few more abilities to make things even more varied. A great addition to this system would Eikonic load-outs, even better if switchable during fights but I understand that would make us too OP perhaps. I had no problem with the performance or motion blur to be fair. I have motion sickness, but it wasn’t too much once I got used to it. Would love an option to turn it off though for comparison. I played graphics mode but I barely realised I was in 30 fps during combat. It felt perhaps a bit noticeable only during exploration and cutscenes. No bugs for me. My ps5 never turned off. All smooth. Side-quests have two faces. While the outdated fetch-quest formula generally drags down the whole side-content experience, fortunately they at least provide incredible world-building, and some quests revealed to be full characters arc. These characters arc are only unlocked doing their quest-chain, and they all have surprisingly good cutscenes that are vital in order to fully appreciate the world, the game’s ending and all the characters. This approach to the side-quest made me feel like the world was truly alive, even after the last boss when I re-visited some places to finish some hunts, I felt like every place became sort of familiar, alive. Another nice details is how the places changes based on your action between the main story and side-quests. The main story tends to change all Valisthea, and you can notice everytime something important changes, the same happens with the weather or day/night cycle. Meanwhile completion of certain side-quest may drastically change an open zone. Example: what is a lost village full of bandits, upon doing the right quest-chain, may become again civilised and people may return to live there. And then some nice people will forever thank you. And if you don’t do those specific side-quests, it just remains like it was before. And you can go there everyday and kill some frenzy bandit. It feels very alive. The world reacts to your actions.

I didn’t realise at all big cities very missing. Perhaps cause the main story dungeons are smartly designed, although they’re linear, they will make you feel inserted in a bigger location than what you will actually explore. You will in fact take a closer look to Capitals through those dungeons rather than it being an open-zones. I appreciated this approach, the game doesn’t necessarily make you feel like you need more open spaces or cities. Perhaps in a DLC. What could have been improved about this spaces is definitely what you could find in it. Exploration doesn’t feel rewarding if not for doing hunts and side-quests completion. A simple fix here would be very appreciated. In general though, addressing the side-quests again: they all have this very mmo fetch quest-formula, and there are also many. It can feel very dragging at times as it breaks the pacing of the game quite a lot. Especially Mid’s main quests (and this is a main quest) after the Crystalline Dominion events, were very out of place imo and it felt bad. That’s the only part of the game I genuinely didn’t like. Especially when I had to redo it in NG+. Why is it even a main quest? Many other side-quests were better than that. In general “quest formula” I’d say overall side-quests all considered, good and bad, are a 7/10 average. Some side-quests (and that bad main quest) were 5s/4s and others straight out 8s/9s. I’m leaving a 9 score to the whole game, but it could easily become a 10 if they polish the “not exciting enough things” up a bit, rework the RPG elements like gear a tiny more. Waiting for such patch, and hopefully a DLC in which we can play as the other Dominants too.

I was initially going to give this game an 8, but it's stayed with me so much that I bumped it up to a 9. This is a great game with a number of flaws that I think could have been easily fixed for a better experience.

I didn't love the side quests. The majority of them seemed nothing more than fetch quests that added little to the story and often didn't even add to the lore or setting.

Most of them seemed tedious with little payoff when I've played other games with side quests that are legendary. I wish they'd put more work in those quests. There *are* some interesting side quests, but often they should have been in the MSQ! I like bonuses and easter eggs, but quests that are absolutely crucial to character development and even fully understanding the ending should be in the MSQ. Fortunately, there aren't too many quests like this, but it further reveals the weakest part of the game.

I wish there'd been more character development with some of the secondary characters, though that's probably a preference rather than a weakness. I can imagine some people saying they like the mystery.

The pros, though I can't list them all:

Soken's score. Holy everything that's holy. Once again, he does not disappoint!!

The eikon fights. I think these fights will be this game's legacy and be what people most remember in ten years in the most positive of ways.

Clive's quest--his quest and motivation are quickly revealed and they are as natural and sympathetic as anything in the series, making him a character you almost immediate cheer on.

Clive's relationships with the people closest to him--fantastic. They seemed more real and more human than almost anything from any of the previous games in the series. Helps you relate with him and the others more.

The plot--slow in some places, but overall great and I especially like how the endgame plays out.

The ending (non-spoilery)--I would have liked more details, but it has stayed with me a lot. I think that's the mark of a good ending and a good story.

If they announce DLC or a sequel, I'll pre-order immediately. There's far more about it I liked than I disliked and I may play through it again and see what I missed the first time around.

It's not too far fetched. It sticks to its "medieval roots". Definitely see this being a game of the year contender. I want it to be.

Clive and Jill bring back so many memories of Yuna and Tidus

Yes there is a few issues with combat coming from a core FF fan I do see it being similar to other action titles but it is trying to progress into something greater.

The Eikon fights alone are a subject to that being a fantastic thing. Jaw drops every time.

Every thing is good. The game did a really good job in getting the player much involve into it, much like how its gonna play out rather than whats gonna play out. The only let down is that it still bears the love tradition of the FF franchise: the main character never gets a happy love-ending at the end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just wow! This game is fantastic. From the quick and rewarding combat system to the gorgeous set pieces to the insane and epic boss battles. Easily one of the best in the series. Yes, it may not be a classic final fantasy game, but each game in the series is different. Each numbered game since 12 has had a completely different combat system than the last. That is just what these games have been for a few years now. The writing, the monsters, the bosses the characters. All of it screams final fantasy. There are of course flaws, some side quests do fall flat bust some are just as equally amazing and heart wrenching. And don't even get me started on the sound track one of the best in years, in the series and in games in general. This was truly a near masterwork, and is definitely fighting it out with TOTK for my game of the year. Expand

One big issue I had was the side quests and the extremely high quality set pieces in the game. The side quests were mostly a joke and how undercooked they were was almost baffling at times. I think if they went forward with an FF game like this in the future, they need to flesh out the things to do within and outside of the side quests. Finally while I loved the set pieces and story highs, it did no favors for the moments after these "highs". The momentum just made you want to push through the busy work to get to the big story moments. Which in some way sounds good but makes the downtime in between the moments a little boring and pointless at times.

Still loved it. Will take some time before I end up playing it again however.

The game's combat system is nothing short of phenomenal, offering a fresh and exhilarating experience that challenges and rewards players in equal measure.

However, one cannot overlook the shortcomings in the side quests which unfortunately feel repetitive and lack the depth that would make them truly engaging. Similarly, the game's open-world zones could benefit from more rich and intricate detail to alleviate their stark emptiness.

On the topic of customization, an additional layer could have been added by providing players the option to tailor Clive's armor. Much like how the aesthetics of weapons evolve throughout the game, a similar feature for armors would have greatly enriched the immersive gaming experience.

In keeping with tradition, Final Fantasy XVI boasts a spectacular and epic soundtrack that significantly enhances the overall atmosphere of the game.

Despite certain areas for improvement, Final Fantasy XVI is an outstanding action RPG that will quickly become a must-have for any PS5 owner.

It’s ironic that FF XV was touted as a “A Final Fantasy for Fans and First-Timers,” but that game didn’t grip me at all! I played it only for 7 hours and had enough and never went back. FF XVI, on the other hand, gripped from the onset and never let go! From the trailers, I wasn’t sure whether it was my cup of tea though, but then I saw there was a free demo available and decided to give it shot. Boy! Was I in for quite a treat! After finishing the demo, I was immediately hooked and knew right there and then… I. HAVE. TO. BUY. THIS. GAME. NOW!

In those opening hours, the game succeeds in making you care about its story, characters and universe. I wanted to know more about Clive and his journey of redemption and vengeance (He’s a compelling protagonist and oh-so-easy on the eyes!). That’s what pulled me in, first and foremost. I wanted to know more about this fantasy world that felt like Game of Thrones meets Attack on Titan. I was in! And so I played more. Then, there is the presentation, from the visuals to the soundtrack, which is top-notch. You can tell you’re playing something special. It features some of the most jaw-dropping, bombastic, thrilling showdowns in recent memory. God of War Ragnarok’s final boss fight pales in comparison to the first titanic boss battle here. There a sense of scale, wonder and awe that not even that formidable title could evoke as spectacularly as FF XVI does here. It manages to shift up the gear, making every succeeding boss battle feel even bigger and more over-the-top than the last. Quite an impressive achievement.

Now onto the gameplay. It starts out pretty basic. However, as the story progresses you start acquiring more powers to diversify your arsenal and match your preferred gameplay style. It’s reminiscent of GOW in its use of special abilities, but not as sophisticated. Here, you’re far more invested in doing as much damage as possible in the shortest amount of time possible, which is where its combo system comes into the equation. It’s fast-paced, flashy and so much fun! If you’re coming off playing something like Elden Ring, FF XVI will feel like a piece of cake. You can unequip the rings of assistance you start out with if you want more of a challenge. Unfortunately, hard mode (FF mode) only unlocks after you’ve completed the game, which I thought was a misjudgment on their part. It’s not a perfect game, though.

The side quests do bring it down a bit. While not completely pointless, as they do add something to the world-building in many interesting ways, they can feel like a drag. Some are more interesting than others, with the overwhelming majority being subpar, not only in quality but also in presentation. You can tell all the money went towards those breathtakingly spectacular boss battles, because one features state-of-the art visuals and the other animation that wouldn’t feel out of place in a PS3 game.

So, the highs are so stratospherically high that it makes the lows feel mid at best. This is a solid 8 game, but the highs are sooo high that they push it to a 9. Just push through the slow parts and meandering side quests (prioritize those with a plus sign), because its boss battles are quite something to behold. You have to play and experience them for yourself to believe it! Overall, a fantastic game and the most fun I’ve had this year so far! You’ll come away wanting more! Fingers-crossed for a DLC in the future!

It's not for everyone. It's a dark, fairly grounded story that is an emotional rollercoaster. It more tha utilises it's mature rating, which may put some fans of the series off. But this shouldn't stop you from giving it a go, which is why the demo exists. And the tone of the demo pretty much sets the tone of the game: dark with lighthearted moments. Very much like the Witcher 3, XVI is set in a bleak, war torn world, but there is beauty to be found, and you learn to appreciate those moments when you get them.

The combat is similar to DMC, with a dodge mechanic that's akin to Nier. It's very sharp and snappy, though I do which the base sword combat had more than one ground combo. As you progress, the Eikon abilities open up and let you perform cooler feats! But it's not a game you can have fun with by just mashing a button. You have all the tools for air combos, big finisher attacks, and a dog you can use to extend your combos. Experiment and have fun!

In regards to turn-based vs action: no one if forcing you to play this, as they also didn't with XV and VIIR. If action is not your thing, that's fine! This is not the game for you. If like me you like action, you may find you enjoy this game like I have.

My take of it is, play the demo. If you love that, you'll love the rest of the game. Stay away from toxic reviews, and make your own mind.

It's not perfect. Most of the side quests are pretty bland, even boring, until the endgame ones. A few music tracks are kinda bland, mostly the ambiant ones. Some story beats are pretty "tropy", mostly during the fight half of the game IMO. I've had some trouble getting into the gameplay at first, but it really clicked well around the 40% mark.

But as you can tell, those are mostly minor things, and ABSOLUTELY everything else was AT WORST average. AT WORST. Which means all the rest was good, or amazing. So yeah. I've played a few good games this year, and I think a few more are coming out soon... but that will def be my GOTY. The overall quality of this game is just too good : like most critics said, "it has a few boring lows, but its highs are amazing"

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went in expecting to be disappointed because of how much Square-Enix has been dropping the ball the last 15ish years, but I was hooked right away with the demo. The main story, characters, voice acting, graphics, and core gameplay are all incredible. I haven't been this invested in a game in years, and I'm still depressed with how the end of it all came about, but in a good way!

The gameplay is fantastic with how it allows you to mix and match whatever skills you want to adapt to any scenario or fit any gameplay style that you like, and the fact that it requires keeping a certain tempo to complete combos rather than just mashing the button sequences allots for a fun challenge; I can't say how many times I got into a panic and lost my rhythm just to shoot myself in the foot with, which is fun because it feels like I'm actually immersed in the fight itself. That, and the voice acting is phenomenal. The actors really knocked it out of the park; every region had its own dialect, every character their own voice ticks, and so on. That, and they caught every emotion perfectly; they actually got tears out of me during the most intense parts. As for the story, it was sublime. They made every event relevant and left no loose ends, nor did I catch any plot holes. They didn't even pull that typical JRPG crap where they set up the big bad at the beginning and then have him trounced to only be a puppet of an even bigger bad at the very last second; no, this time around they introduce him from the beginning, and it makes him all the more menacing. They do this for every single villain in the game, big or small. They also had a pleasant amount of subtle easter eggs referencing past games, like how they even brought back the hunter's board from FFXII and even hinted at it with the Rogue Tomato being the icon for it.

The only complaints I have are in regard to the side content. Every talking sequence not directly related to the main quest/story is very poorly animated. The fact that they had voice acting for most of it but didn't bother to sync the lip animations was incredibly distracting and shook me out of the experience every time; it took me hours to get over it. That, and the majority of the side content was all just boring fetch quests. Fetch quests can be fine if there is some variety, but I can't tell you how many times I loathed having to go back to the same location just to get whatever new obscure thing some NPC wanted. Granted the side stories were mostly interesting with how they developed the core cast, but there were more than a few that were cringy, if not because they were poorly written but also poorly animated. To make matters worse, there were at least two instances where they forced this kind of content, and if you want the real nice gear in-game, then you have to do all of it.

All in all, it was an amazing experience and worth every penny I used to purchase it.

    Gameplay: 9/10
    Story: 10/10
    Characters: 9/10
    Voice Acting: 10/10

FF16 is up there with FF9 and FF14 as one of my favorite games in the series. The story is exciting, emotional, and engaging. It has the darkest tone of any FF game without being depressing and I love it. The spectacle and bombast definitely balances it out and it isn't like a FromSoft game where you're alone with your thoughts and don't see people for hours (still love those games). The combat is fun to experiment with and has more depth than you realize. As someone who plays a lot of DMC 5, I wish the game didn't hold back for the sake of casual audiences and people used to turn based. It just needs a couple more melee combos and increased base difficulty. I still had the time of my life regardless, especially in the late game.
Level design is linear, which isn't bad, sometimes i prefer linear games, but it could do with better exploration rewards for the more open areas.
The music has some of Soken's best tracks. In a series that had Uematsu for so long, Soken has made some of the best songs in the series. My favorites are Ascension, the Eikon Boss Theme, and Titan Lost.

TLDR: Nearly perfect. With the positives greatly outweighing the negatives, a great blend of traditional and experimental Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy XVI ranks highly in the series and compares well to FFX quality wise.

The conmbat gameplay is incredibly satisfying with various powersets and great sword combat, although it is on the easier side so if you are looking for a big challenge, you may be slightly disappointed. It is not so easy that it is boring, but not very difficult either. The boss fights are also some of the best in gaming wit great set pieces, combat, visuals, sound, and atmosphere. Each one feels like it could be an endgame fight. The performance is consistent and the graphics are beautiful. The RPG elements are a bit shallow than previous games in the franchise, not terrible, but not as in-depth and i do miss the party system like in the 7 remake. The exploration in the areas desppite the graphis being great can be a bit weak due to some repititive side quests and uninteresting side characters outside of the main cast, but a few of them are still interesting enough.

Yes, there is much recycling happening in the Final Fantasy franchise as of late. With the success of FF14 it's no wonder that they would use some ideas. I would've liked more original ideas for this, the first true next gen Final Fantasy, but that is my only negative point. And for those who never played FF14, it's not even noticeable.

Other than that, everything else is incredible.

Other than that, everything else is incredible. Beautiful, stunning graphics, the best soundtrack ever, a most captivating story, great voiceacting, loveable characters, meaningful dialogues and then we get the best Cid ever on top. I would even go so far as to say one of the best NPC ever in a video game.

The combat system is very action-oriented, but I don't mind since I grew up playing DMC and GOW. Even though the CTB in FF X is my all-time favourite combat system in any FF, that doesn't make the FF XVI system any less awesome and fun to play. Yes, I miss some status ailments for strategic purposes, but it's no deal breaker.

The story is dark, brutal and surprisingly mature most of the times. As someone playing FF for nearly 30 years, I was rather shocked the moment someones head gets sliced of and someone else gets splattered with blood because of that. But I like it, it's much more realistic that way.

And I have to compliment Square Enix for including a gay couple. Yes, they didn't need to zoom out when they kiss, but it's a huge step forward for the series as it is. So thank you Square for that.

-Plot twists, character sacrifices, and complex story telling is all present like most final fantasy of high value
    -Epic music
    -Never boring* (except... first con)
-Most side quests are great and shows off the people of each kingdom.
    -No bugs, glitches
-Graphics are True Next-Gen but still some compromise still exist. A PS5 Pro might be required.
-Open World game gives much to explore
-Game starts off linear but switches to Open World after the Garuda fight.

    Cons
-First few "side quests" are more like task and small fetch quests * Thankfully, it's short and does not apply to all side quests, only the first few ones
-Very poor customization when it comes to gear, weapons and the such, all you have is a black smith to have a bit more attack that is very much optional. Contrast that to the Materia system of FF7 R, different builds and gives higher strategy.
-Very low strategy involve, whatever you use will be based more on your game play preference rather than weakness and strategy.
I have not encountered enemies being weak to certain elements and if there was, it's still more useful to use your abilities than not.
    -The World could be bigger
-There could be more hunts, they are very good and fun to fight, we want more of these.
-After ascension to have 3 Eikons, the game becomes much easier with many abilities to easily destroy your enemies. Smaller enemies are basically cannon fodder.
-The existence of the easy automatic items, aside auto-Torgal, were never needed. All it cause is for trolls to bash the game without any justification. The game really requires skills and most players can handle it.

Feels more like a Devil May Cry game than Final Fantasy but it's still an awesome game worth playing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So i just finished the game, probably still kinda stunned by what just happened at the end, but anyways. As a relatively new ff fan, i don't know heeps about the other games, having only played ff XV, seen snippets of ff VII and putting a few hours into ff XIV. But i must admit, as a fan of bombastic spectacle, this game blew me away. The highlight here are definitely the boss fights. Especially the one against the Eikons. The eikon fights are all unique in someway, and impress with stunning visuals, captivating music, and fun movesets. The final boss was honestly, and I have played a few Games in my time, by which i mean a ton, was probably one kf the best, if not even the best fights i have ever fought, in all regards, music was awesome, moveset was challenging, visuals were unbelievably creative and appealing, and the villain is cool too. So Yes, the fights are great, abilities are interesting and all fun to use.
Music was also on point, even tho the main battle theme plays through most of the game. But I don't really see this as a flaw, because that theme seems more like Clive's Theme, and not really the battle theme, so i can understand that. Also the theme fn slaps.
Story was great ( even tho very cutscene heavy, which personally im not the biggest fan of) characters are well written, very funny at times, but also heartfelt, emotional, and Just really sweet at times.
Gear and items are a more laidback System of the game, with Not a lot of personal effort required to be effective, since the Equipment doesn't do a whole lot.
So Yeah. Honestly, i really really enjoyed my time, i wish i could play more with These characters, and i really hope more people try this game out

A great game, what stuck me the most in this FF was the story! Story worthy of arresting you to know the outcome. The battle mode pleased me even running away from the standard turn-based duels. One of the items that frustrated me was the dropped frames and my ps5 literally overheated, but I still managed to platinum the game. Needless to say, the Eikons' battles are epic.

The game set out to reinvent the wheel and redefine what a Final Fantasy title can be with its switch to a combat system resembling that of Devil May Cry. I am happy to report that it has partially accomplished its goal or atleast, where it matters the most.

The combat system is one of the most satisfying ones I've ever experienced in a game. It depends less on weapon builds or stats, because you only have one weapon type (sword), but more on the Eikon skills you unlock after every major Eikon fight. These skills offer some of the best moves and attacks in the video game industry and it's quite easy to come up with some crazy builds and get the ball rolling. The game also features companions in the form of AI controlled NPCs that fight alongside you. (Torgal is best boy) Although, that is not to mean that they'll play the game for you, you'll still need to do most of the heavy lifting to win the fight.

One of the biggest highlights of the game is its astounding soundtrack made by Masayoshi Soken. The quality of music he offers with his composition is a true work of art and unbeaten by any game released this year. From the instruments to the vocals, you can just feel the story hidden inside the tracks.

The game also offers one of the best Final Fantasy stories to date, despite its dark and gritty tone. I would even dare to argue that this tone enhances the story and enables alternative, transparent ways to tell it. It's a story about the bonds of family and friendship, human nature and our will to endure every threat that stands in our way.

Clive is also one of the best protagonists of the franchise, on the same pedestal as Cloud. The side characters are also a treat and handled like real people trying to survive in a world that wants to enslave and/or kill them. This however, does not mean that the characters act like angsty teenagers all the time. There is a very human and hopeful side to them that really shines through in the dialogue, cutscenes and gameplay. One of the best cast for a mainline Final Fantasy game in a long while.

THE highlight of the game however, are the Eikon fights, where you turn into a Godzilla-sized Eikon called Ifrit and battle iconic summons such as Garuda, Titan, Bahamut and Odin. The sheer spectacle and outsatnding choreography included in these fights is otherworldly. Adding to that, most of the spectacle happens in-game with the player controlling Ifrit rahter than through cutscenes. At this point of the game, it also becomes very apparent that they did not save any money. They had a huge budget and they used it.

The only drawbacks to the game however are the insignificance of the RPG mechanics and the complete removal of the traditional turn-based combat. Crafting and equipping a sword with higher numbers is as RPG as it gets and that's about it, which wouldn't have been a problem if Square-Enix hadn't marketed the game as an Action-RPG. I also believe they could have struck a great balance between real-time and turn-based combat like the FFVII remake.

All in all, Final Fantasy XVI is a game that I will remember for a very long time, due to its outstanding story, excellent characters, unforgettable soundtrack and satisfying gameplay.

The story is easily the best FF has ever been. It drives you forward at every point, proving gripping over and over again with interesting characters and larger-than-life fights. The fighting is awesome, coming together really cleanly when you get the accessories/abilities you want all synergizing perfectly.

That said, the RPG mechanics in this game are super light. Looking at FFVIIR, it IS possible for FF to have both action and in-depth RPG systems. FF16 is largely missing the min-max concepts that made those other FF games really stand out. The crafting also feels excessively tacked-on. In addition, as great as some of the score is, it's disingenuous to say it is all incredible, in addition to the timing of some of it actually taking away from big moments versus adding to them. A particularly emotionally impactful scene loses most of it's punch when a character theme is played over something more aware of the scenario. Even the songs that pack a huge punch have weird valleys that cut through it's peaks. Some of them hit like any you'd ever heard, but few are memorable enough to hum throughout a day like you would To Zanarkand, Aerith's Song, or Fisherman's Horizon. I even still find myself humming Blinding Light but it's hard for me to recount any in FF16 at all unless I'm actively listening to it.

The NG+ mode, in my opinion, cements how powerful the story is, as the game itself feels tough to get through again. Now that I know what happens, I'm that much less influenced to complete another playthrough, since that was what got me through most of the initial run.

This game ultimately feels like a single-player version of FF14, which is great in some respects, but if you don't think 14 is the best thing since sliced bread, you may feel less inclined than to platinum this one or finish all that it has to offer.

Someone once said "this is the greatest 8.5 game I've ever played" and I think that's a really astute analysis.

Largest settlements that you may have seen in the trailers that your keen to explore can't be entered naturally and explored. They are linear moments in the game.
The game could have had more secret bonus areas to explore.

    Story
The Story is good but it's not at the level I have come to expect from a Final Fantasy game.
The story starts off very good but after a big story point about 25% in, the story becomes less enjoyable. This is because (been as vague as possible) they took something out of the story that was working and failed to replace it with something as good. Also the story becomes very formulaic with the game having the feeling like it's broken up into levels.
Story is almost always serious and there isn't enough good story moment between the main characters. Clive had more relationship building with side quest givers than the main cast. Like Mid has more personality than Jill. Final Fantasy XV had many side quests but they didn't prevent you getting to know the 4 main characters.
The side quests are for the most part very mid to bad and there is a very high number of them. Some of the later side quest offer pretty good stories but apart from 2 or 3 they don't do much character development for the main cast and so I found my self not caring as much and they aren't very fun to do from a game-play angle. The main cast is so underdeveloped it would be hard to tell which ones even count as the main cast.
Because many of the side quests are miss-able it makes you feel like you need to do them but doing so really hurts the games pacing as your constantly getting a new wave of side quest to do and it also makes the game even more easy, it hurts the games otherwise good battle system.

    Game-play
The world is pretty big and there are many locations to travel though.
The game relies on the map screen too much, it really hurts immersion. The map comes together more as you play but it still very much map screen and teleporting focused.
The the game auto runs and so if you want to explore at a more casual pace to take in the sights, it's very clunky.
The battle system has been getting a lot of criticism but I think it is a great deal of fun.
The controls of having to cycle between different Eikons is clunky and the Eikon abilities are overpowered which centres the combat around them too much. I found the combat more fun at the start when you only had the one.
Some of the big Eikon battles can be extremely long winded and tedious despite visually been amazing. They just take forever to go down.
16 too often feels way too easy, even with out the assistance accessories and I am one of these people who was wanting an easy mode in the Souls games and so, if this game is easy to me then it really is easy. There should have been the option of a harder mode from the start.
There is a a bug were enemies are almost dead and they will walk to their starting position and reset their health to full. Normally in games you have to lead the enemy far away form their starting position for this to happen. In FF16 it can happen very close to it.
Though I enjoyed 16's battle system, I personally prefered VII Remake's Action/ATB hybrid style battle system.

    Thoughts
There has been claims that this isn't a true Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy 1 through to 9 were all very similar in their game design and all been menu based battle systems (1, 2 and 3 been Turn-based and 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 been ATB) and also having top down overworlds to explore that functioned in a similar way to each other. Final Fantasy 16 is very different from those earlier games. 10 went back to been turn-based switching from the classic Final Fantasy ATB system but lost the overworld and the series has had more drastic changes since and so by now, change have become more than just story and world and been a bigger part of Final Fantasy and I think it's unfair to say Final Fantasy 16 isn't a true Final Fantasy game especially since Final Fantasy XV had already made the jump to action based combat with big battles against giant enemies. Plot also has many similar story beats to other Final Fantasy games like Final Fantasy XV. Main Character been royalty, father dying at the start, war between nations, the end of the world slowly creeping forward and city powered by a crystal. The story feels like a Final Fantasy story.
I really enjoyed Final Fantasy 16 despite the issues as it's a very high quality title and the are areas where it does shine keep the game been a lot of fun.

Review after 40 hours. In short, a good game with HUGE flaws that hold it back from achieving its full potential.

    The good:

EIKON FIGHTS are some the best video game moments I've ever had (think god of war 3 material) - this is the highlight and what the game basically uses to push you through some of the negatives I've listed below. FF16 relies on these moments VERY heavily.

SOME of the characters are great such as Clive, Jill, Cid, and Benedicta.

The story and lore are interesting (when it actually gets going).

Visually it's impressive, although performance mode is pointless (does not hit 60fps but I'm not that bothered about using fidelity).

Combat is excellent, but has its flaws.

The score - omg, one of the best video game soundtracks I've ever heard.

    The bad:

Side quests are appalling - I would say 85% of them are not worth your time. Boring with little to no reward. If you plan to play this game PLEASE do not bother with them. Hopefully you'd have a diff experience to me.

Exploration - pointless. Large semi-open world areas with basically nothing in them. You see something glinting, go and collect it, wow I got 2 gil for coming over to this patch of grass.

Enemy variety - you're fighting the same enemies over and over.

Combat strategy - no enemies have weaknesses, nothing like that. Every fight becomes the same. People comparing this to DMC and Bayonetta - the combat is not even close to the depth and breadth of those combat systems.

Using Eikons - great that you get a total of 7 eikons to use but you can only have 3 equipped at any one time - this feels like a waste. Even 1 more would have given combat more depth.

Environments - while they look impressively detailed, you cannot interact with them. For example, some of the market towns have bustling markets but you can only actually buy something from one vendor. It makes them feel shallow - it's all just for show. Take Tears of the Kingdom for example - you go into a store and you can actually look at the difference products and buy them - this creates a sense of emersion that FF16 is sorely missing.

Facial animations - more akin to PS3 era as opposed PS5 era. It doesn't come close to something like TLOU2, HFW, or Uncharted 4 for example. It breaks the emersion.

    The ugly:

Pacing - what really lets it down for me and what has actually made me decide to put it down after 40 hours without actually finishing it. There are stretches in this game that are so boring it makes the game a chore to play. This is true even of the main quest line. Be prepared to be killing a god one minute and then, I kid you not, delivering some apples to three people the next. Or some soup. I can't do it anymore. I expect I'm missing out on one final Eikon fight but the push through the boringness is simply not worth it for me.

In summary FF16 failed to completely commit to what it wanted to be (action game) and tried (and failed) to mix in some bare bones RPG elements.

10/10 games are supposed to be innovative - I can't think of a single thing FF16 does that many of other games haven't done before. Even god of war 3 ticks the epic boss fight box.

Note also that, as usual, mainstream critics (generally speaking) did not call any of this out.

The codex of info readily available to read or research while in cutscenes is now a tool which should be implemented in all games that try to craft a believable intricate world. Very well done, even if I wouldn't call it a final fantasy. I guess we now hope dragon quest is the new standard of RPGs, while the final fantasy series is being done like a western adventure action game. The audio production is second to none. Though Mobius isn't making the music, it's pretty good though not as catchy and memorable. The composer will be a great in due time.

-Time wasters everywhere.... so many slow menus and interrupts to the game that just aren't needed. Why on earth is so many things a hold or double action. Why does the map screen take 5-10 seconds to show etc.
-RPG system should just have been dumped. Stats are pointless, equipment is pointless, skill trees are pointless. It's more of a devil may cry game than a FF game in the regard of RPG systems and all the mentioned are just cosmetic with increasing the same number without choices.
-Difficulty is hit and miss, it's way too easy to enjoy the combat system. But the combat system is quite darn good. So having all encounters turn into a easy button mash is sad. Harder difficulties are sadly locked beyond NG+

I've been saying that Final Fantasy XV is the best FF to come out since FFX. FFXVI is here to challenge this thought.

I absolutely loved my 68 hours spent with FFXVI. I was skeptical at first because, honestly, it looked nothing like I hoped a new mainline Final Fantasy would be. But I'm glad Square proved me wrong.

The first thing that gripped me into the world of FFXVI was the story and its presentation. I loved the blend and tone between this dark medieval war story and the fantastical mythos of the franchise. The world building and overall conflict took a while to connect, but the strong emphasis on a character-driven plot kept me going. Mostly, from beginning to end, the story is fantastic. It is as epic as a FF game should be, it's bleak (at times a bit too bleak), joyful, well written, deep and gets crazy by the end.

But what really drives the story forward are the characters and their dialogues. FFXVI has some of the best written characters and exchanges in the franchise. Clive is a great protagonist, Jill has an impressive backstory, Gav is one of the coolest characters, Dion is complex enough and even Torgal, the dog, gets to shine. Not to mention Cid - the greatest character in the game. Probably the best Cid in the whole franchise. Voice acting, charisma and vivid well-written conversations were key to all this.

As for gameplay, it may not be as deep as FFVII or innovative as FFX, but it gets the job done better than the likes of FFXV or FFXII. You see, the action mechanics are pretty simple, but they're very accessible, excelling in substance, intensity AND style. It's quite addictive, actually. Especially when it comes to boss fights. Whether you're fighting as an Eikon or going against a tough enemy, this is where the spectacle lies.

This game looks absolutely beautiful. Probably one of the best looking games out there, currently. It is quite impressive and it keeps throwing new shockingly beautiful things at the screen until the very last scene. And it all comes together with what must be the best Final Fantasy soundtrack since FFXIII. Simply remarkable!

But for a game that gets so much right, when something goes wrong, it becomes crystal clear.

It may have an incredible story, but its pacing is all over the place. At one moment you're fighting a god, the other you're collecting flowers. And, yes, this is usually how RPGs goes, but it feels glaring on a game so focused in its own plot. As a result, the writing and rhythm kinda goes a bit off by the final act.

The ending, for example, it's not bad, but with a tale as depressing as this one, it'd be better for a more direct and sunny finale option. Being bittersweet and ambiguous can work, sure, but not always.

The amount of sidequests were a low point as well. They're usually very interesting, with some even gifting you with cool scenes, world building and interactions between characters. In fact, some sidequests at the ending are A MUST, for example. The problem is, if you want to experience them, you have to go through the same repetitive objectives and places over and over again. And there are A LOT of them, coming up at the worst times possible during the main quest. There's simply no verticality. You can see this on enemy variety, which is a joke. Even the hunts get stale.

And last, but not least, FFXVI's biggest flaw is not deciding whether it wants to be an action game or an RPG.

I miss customization, statuses, skill variety, secret dungeons. It is mostly there, but it's just... not enough. It's different. A party system could've fixed part of that. You have very charming characters helping Clive on his quest, but they're barely there during gameplay and are barely useful. You can't even mess around with Torgal's skills and he's always present.

Still, in my opinion, Final Fantasy XVI is an amazing game back to back. Its flaws are clear and I get that it looks and plays different enough to avert a few fans. But it is definitely a great entry in the mainline series and might be the best one since FFX.

Only time will tell. Play it and find out for yourself.

There's no party whatsoever, you fight alongside npcs that may or may not be there, it wouldn't matter. And sometimes they kinda distract you, with Thorgal jumping around, Jill spamming spells everywhere, while you try to understand what the hell is going on with Clive flashy moves.
Npcs who sometimes have little to no personality. Jill will never be as good as Tifa, Aerith, Rinoa, or Yuna. And it's a shame, because others like Cid are very good.
Same for the antagonists, many of them are poorly written and developed.
Another huge letdowns are the complete absence of party customization (no equipment, weapons, setup), and that there's basically no depth in combat.
No elemental weaknesses or strategy, you can take down a Piros or a fire based boss with Phoenix fire moves, lol.
About enemies, there's no variety, and except for some iconic foes, they're too generic. Bees? Deers? Wolves? A FF game deserves something better.
Same goes for the world and areas, they're too generic and poorly designed.
There are also lightning issues in some dungeons, everything looks dark and grey.

    What's good then?
Well the story is great, and some fights are epic. I'm halfway through the story and can't wait to take down the next antagonist.
Clive is a great MC alove the way he's developed and the story of his family.
Combat way too DMC-ish for a FF but good without a doubt.

So a good game that feels like it's developed from SE team C, while A and B are creating a true FF which is FFVII Rebirth. It will be a nice adventure, but not a good FF.

The absence of weaknesses or resistance against attack types also makes all the fights pretty much more of the same old thing. The OST is forgettable, but it has a few great tracks that stand out. The frame rate is all over the place while exploring, in what the game calls "Performance mode", which is quite disappointing for a PS5 release. Expand

HOWEVER, the game does not quite feel like Final Fantasy. It feels lazy and quickly churned out. For what it is, it is great, but from FF, I have grown to expect some soul and some great stories and this game has NEITHER. First, the story is as generic as it gets. The characters are dull and boring with Clive and Jill essentially being the same exact character. The first like 15 hours are just Clive not understanding what was rather obvious and coming to terms with his failure again and again. Jill has the exact same problem and the exact same solution. There are moments here and there where the game has moments of Final Fantasyness but overall it is severely lacking in the soul department. Even FF13 which has been unfairly panned for years now had a charm and exuberance that made it distinctively Final Fantasy. In FF16, they try hard to incorporate certain things like the spells and abilities we are used to but the truth is Clive is monochromatic and every enemy can easily be killed irrespective of which Eikons you choose. In total, he has like 4 abilities for each Eikon. The magic button is completely useless and basically does chip damage for when you are far.

The world is boring! Valisthea is tiny and repetitive. You have these little towns with like 3 buildings each. I am approximately half way done and thus far there have been two or three dungeons beyond the two unimpressive and tiny zones. I think there are two other equally unimpressive zones coming up with some fetch quests but I am not looking forward to them. The production value is obviously high and the game is entertaining but, WHEN IT IS ALL SAID AND DONE, this will be remembered as a game that is closer to FF15 than to FF7, 8, 9, 6 or even 12.

Lastly, the characters are so lame that they took Balthier, called him Cid, and thought no one would notice. They also took Basch and called him Rodney. They even look like their source material. Clive will go down with Noctis as the worst protagonist in FF history while Jill will go down as the overall worst character ever. The only characters with any soul are an NPC named Gav and Torgal who is a wolf with no dialogue. Despite having no dialogue, his personality is more fleshed out than that of Jill.

    Pros:

When the game ramps up, the spectacle is captivating. The game is load, bombastic, and phenomenal. You feel the power fantasy the game is striving to deliver. This game is what God of War used to be, what the new installation of GoW should have been, not the lame duck it has become.

The cast of characters is likeable. Clive, Jill, And Cid are phenomenal characters. I liked spending time with them. I didn't mind not being able to control them. I didn't mind not always having them in my party. The story is very much Clive's story, and Clive is strong enough to carry the narrative on his own.

The game looks amazing. I played it on Frame “Rate mode” over “Graphics” and it still impressed me on how visually stunning the game is. The amount of detail that went into this game makes it worth owning a ps5. This is next gen gaming, and it was about time we got a game that merited the purchase of the ps5, because after 2 years of its release, almost every title we’ve had has been a ps4 port.

    Cons

The story is bogged down with a lot of pointless filler. At first it wasn't a problem, but towards the latter half of the game the filler becomes egregious. It dampens the flow of the narrative. Every major chapter completion is mired down by a pointless fetch quest that does not add any value to the overall narrative. These moments should have been made side quests. For example, looking for a hooker has no impact on the overall narrative and should have been written out of the main narrative.

Side quests are dull and repetitive. Many side quests are "go there, mindlessly kill a few enemies, and come back." While many games follow this formula, the stories tied to them are lackluster. There are very few side quest that had worthwhile interactions. After a while, I just ignored all the talking. I did them only to get for the few rewards they provide.

Hunts are fun. Some of them pose a little challenge, but everything rewards you with material for a crafting system that has absolutely no value, there is little to be gained from them aside from the fun in engaging with them.

There is a lack of enemy variety. While there is good selection of enemies to fight, the more interesting types are locked behind the campaign. The world of Valisthea is an expansive open world, but you do get some small areas to explore. However, most of these areas have the same three types of enemies: bugs, goblins, and chocobos. These enemies don't really pose a challenge. They’re sponges, but that’s it.

The combat system is too plain. The game can feel like a one-button smasher most of the time. I have to intentionally make it challenging for myself since most enemies aren't engaging. The only time the combat shines is when you're fighting a mini-boss or boss battle.

The implementation of an upgrade system baffles. As you progress through the story, the game gives you the gear it wants you to utilize. It drops a lot of upgrade material, but there is absolutely no use for it. There is never a moment you need to worry about crafting or upgrading a weapon or gear. Every boss fight gives you a weapon to "craft". Once you “craft” that weapon, you have no incentive to see the black smith again until after you’ve killed your next boss. Since you can't upgrade these weapons and since they're the strongest weapons between every chapter, you don't have a need to see the black smith. The game should have just given you the weapons.

The crafting system would have been more sense if none of the weapons in the game had attack values, rather different elemental properties or effects. With all weapons being on par with each other, upgrading could have been more engaging, but that leads into another issue.

A lot of the strategy from former titles has been stripped from this game. Let’s say one of the swords would have had an ice element to it. It could have been your go to weapon to fight fire type enemies. Everything is so bare bones.

Every town in the game feels empty. There are lot of towns in the game, but despite how many npcs, there are, most of them feel empty. How difficult would it have been to add shops, smithies, and Inns to these locations? You can’t even rest at an inn to heal your wounds. You either have to die intentionally, or buy potions heal, then buy more potions.

They say there's some challenge in new game +, but new game + only works if the base game is good enough to pull me back into it.

I like Final Fantasy. I want these games to success, but this is a great game to buy on sale.

It doesn't even meet action-RPG standard, it's a straight beatemup/hacknslash. There are literally other genres of game with more RPG elements to the combat than this game. That said, boss battles are always a great spectacle, which make it entertaining in itself.

The cinematics, storytelling and dialogue aren't without flaws, but are definitely one of the game's strengths, even if some of the characters are a little dull. Also tries a little too hard to gain the 'M' rating at times.

Overall for me, it's not the attempt to mature the franchise setting that makes or breaks the game (after all it should be expected that each FF numbered game will take place in a unique setting), but the lack of depth to the combat outside of basic enjoyment of spamming attacks and creating hac and slash combos that's the disappointment.

Soundtrack is 10/10 and massively assists the setting and amplifies the drama, but then again shouldn't really expect anything less from a FF OST.

I understand the onslaught of review bombs, as there are a ridiculous amount of 10s also being given, sometimes thoughtlessly caught up in hype, and giving a more reasonable score like a 6 to 9, doesn't do much to alter it, but from what I've played so far, it's a lop-sided 8, with elements of the game that are 10/10 frustrated by other elements that are more in line with a 6 or 5/10. So I guess it depends on what you choose to focus on

Constantly using action commands to open large/heavy doors and break down wooden planks is a stupid mechanic and added nothing.
Combat (8/10): The combat does take some getting used to especially for people who are not used to action combat style games. The game does have a super reliance on dodging which is kind of a letdown. Yes, you do have one form that allows for blocking but only when you are in that form.

Performance (7/10): I’m going to leave this one short... The game runs well but during Eikon battles and combining certain abilities together can make the game stutter and hitch. Some people did have PS5 overheating issues as well.

It would be a 9 if it were technically better and a little more variety in the fights. I would have preferred a system like the one in the FF7 remake or that Jill is more involved in the fight and that you can switch between the two and combine the attacks.

Unfortunately, the game is also another step away from FF.
Even then I hated that they called their FF MMO FF11. Even that had nothing to do with FF except for some elements that keep coming back. FF series is a pure single player series.
It was a big mistake not to call it FF Online or something like that back then. Just like other FF spinoff series.
The same with FF14. FF 15 and especially FF16 do not have the problem that it is a pure single player game, but that it is too much single player.
The parties themselves are not important and you cannot control them. (FF15 had it patched but still not the real one)
In short, FF should be an RPG or JRPG where you have a party and you go on adventures with that party and ultimately save the world.

FF16 has the problem that you don't have a party and RPG elements are almost non-existent.
Every Souls game except Sekiro has more RPG elements, which is just wrong when such a series has more RPG elements than FF.
FF stands for the fact that JRPG became big and well-known in the west. Now you have a good game, I would say, even if it unfortunately has some bugs, which has almost nothing to do with JRPG.
It would have done so much better for the title to be released as an FF spinoff. Just like back then with FF15.
But then they would probably sell fewer units because the title FF16 alone attracts more customers than an FF Game of Crystal or whatever it could have been called.
It's a shame that SE doesn't really want anything to do with JRPGs anymore. At least not with a big budget and want to develop names like FF.
FF is the only name that would still be able to bring turn-based JRPGs to the masses.
I would have wished that they would take up this again and revive and further develop the turn-based JRPGs, that the genre would not die out and was only developed for low budgets.
The games these days all suffer from the fact that they are becoming more and more the same anyway.

As already mentioned, there are some problems.
The performance could be better. especially the 60 fps mode is not good. You should turn off the ray tracing so that the FPS is at least halfway close to 60, away from the fights.
Especially since you don't notice anything from ray tracing.
Gives option to have it off or on.
    Just like with motion blur.
It's a real shame that you can't control your combat companions. Apart from the dog, which is also rather annoying in the long run.
Why not something like in FF12, where you set the companions in advance in a menu, how they should react in fights and when and how to heal etc.
So they do almost nothing but stand around. Particularly weak from Jill, who is Shiva, she should be able to wipe the floor with just about everyone.
But I play it through quite clearly. As I said, it's not a bad game, but it has too little to do with FF to call it FF16, a mainstay of the series.
German synchro is unfortunately partly not good but that was already the case with FF15. The important speakers at least have good synchro. NPCs is unfortunately cringe and you can tell that you didn't put a lot of money and time into it.
But you can fix it if you play it in English or even better in Japanese.
I'm glad to get a German synchro at all. Many don't do that anymore.
The combat system is ok but not nearly as good as DMC. It's a mixture of KH and DMC, which is logical. It's partly too simple or simplified compared to DMC and KH, but I think that did the game good. Otherwise there would be too much frustration. The game is not designed or made to have precise inputs like DMC. Especially since the camera is too close to have an overview of the battlefield and always know exactly where each enemy is and when he is attacking you.

Some boss fights were a bit annoying. Doesn't like fighting the big bosses that much if you're not fighting as an ifrit yourself. Doesn't feel as fast and good as DMC. But I am satisfied with it and a gigantic step forward compared to FF15. Tried replaying FF15 before starting FF16. This was not possible. In my opinion, FF15's combat system has aged very badly and is no longer really playable for me. FF16 does really well in comparison and is a dream. But that brings me back to my main criticism, did FF have to become more of a DMC and KH? Why didn't you move away from FF15 and go back to the roots? Luckily we didn't get a stamina bar. Hope we never get a Souls FF. If so, please only as a spinoff ser
