Probably one of my favorite Final Fantasy games in terms of the story. I also love the action-oriented gameplay. The world looks beautiful, the character models look beautiful. My two biggest gripes are - 1. Doing away with status effects. I feel like it really dumbed down the gameplay. 2. There are some amazing side quests - but the side quests in the first half of the game are weak, overall. The amount of fetch quests, I think, will deter people from picking up side quests later in the game and some of the late game side quests provide some of the best storytelling in the game.

Overall - I don't know if this is a FF game I will come back to again and again like FFX and FFXII - but I really enjoyed my time with it.

The city/port is just there for cutscene, MC go there but CUTSCENE ONLY. Many typical rpg will give us short tour explore the city go to shop speak to npc doing side quest, but for ff16 nope.

The world map basically beautiful and i like it.

I view the series as a light hearted adventure: fun, whimsical, charming, etc. However, I truly did not expect the brooding and oppressing take on Final Fantasy XVI, and as an older gamer, I truly appreciate it. The story and side quests didn’t always have a happy ending, and they were incredibly well written and engaging throughout. Boss fights. Boss fights are **** epic; all I’m going to say. A couple of gripes I had is the lackluster crafting system, and the performance.

Final Fantasy XVI is a damn good game, and if the series can keep this tone going, then you will have made a fan out of me!

Una vez finalizado el juego, debo decir que estamos ante un título que pudo haber marcado historia en la saga y codearse con la época gloriosa que va desde el VI al IX pero que se queda a medias por el camino debido a problemas importantes que no pueden pasarse por alto.

    Paso a exponerlos:

    + Eikon battles are fantastic.
+ Fun combat with some interesting ability combinations.

    - RPG elements are lacking.
    - Combat, while fun does feel very damage spongey and seems to lack a few things that would turn it into a great combat system, such as heavy-hitting attacks. Combat becomes very button mashy while your abilities cool down.
    - The story, while interesting, does feel very disorienting and it becomes convoluted near the end.
    - One of the weaker main villains in the series that is known for having great villains.

This was a hard game to review. On the one hand, it has fantastic world-building and a great setup. Great characters, music, and the gameplay, while a tad bit shallow and severely lacking in RPG elements was a good time. The combat can be a bit spongey, but I did enjoy it regardless. The story, while starting off extremely strong, does delve into a weird plot twist that feels a bit out of place and the main villain isn’t as strong as say Sephiroth, Kefka, or Kuja. It does have some emotional hard-hitting moments and the voice cast does a fantastic job in their roles and Clive is a great protagonist.

I feel that while it does have some missteps, I did enjoy my time with this game. It played well, and while the combat boils down to pretty much button mashing until you can use an ability and then you wait for a cooldown to use it again, it was entertaining enough, despite the combat being a bit spongey, especially near the end on some of the bosses.

If you like Final Fantasy and enjoyed XV or VII: Remake you’ll probably like this a lot. I’d still recommend trying it if you’re a fan of the series but while the missteps do prevent it from being in my top five of the series, I still enjoyed my time with it and I do recommend it.

Also during combat, the ability to switch focus to an enemy of your choosing is not there and this makes for close quarters fights vs lots of enemies to become a bit of a mess. The fights vs the bosses have been great so far except one I won’t name where again it suffers because multiple enemies are on screen and you can’t easily switch focus between the two and a dodge will automatically switch your focus.

There isn’t very interesting gear options pretty much like most ff games, I think that is an area where square could improve. There isn’t much point in exploration either. I think for a story driven action game it is great but the rpg elements are lacking.

Taking inspiration from Game of Thrones this world and it’s politics are clearly laid out from the beginning creating immediate interest and investment into our cast of characters. With the focus on eikons (summons) and the dominants they inhabit, XVI quickly creates some of the most unique and memorable characters in the series history, as well as by far the best and most impressive boss battles in video game history. The gameplay with its flashy nature and multiple styles of play was almost always charming to me and a welcome direction for the series. Mix these pretty visuals with great characters and add in another legendary soundtrack, and from the beginning XVI hooks you.

However, like most Final Fantasy games, this one is far from perfect. With a very straightforward story I would not normally complain about it’s linear nature, but the biggest missed opportunity is most of the landmarks spoken of in the game are ones you never visit. The capitol cities have big designs and we’re clearly detailed by the artists, but you only see them in cutscenes or at most briefly see pieces of them during story segments. This is really disappointing from a game with so much setup in the first act of the story, which leads to the second major disappointment, the story. XVI peaks nearly two-thirds into the adventure and never recovers. What started boldly with intense drive and conviction falls flat after a major threat is addressed, then overstays it’s welcome with a bland final act. The icing on the cake, the ending seems missing. With two DLC expansions on the horizon, I am completely convinced Square Enix is saving the true ending behind a paywall. While I’m excited even now to see how the story concludes, I’m disappointed that Square continues to do things like this with the franchise. There is always a chance I’m wrong about this, and if I am, then I would go so far to say this is one of the weakest endings in the series history.

While far from perfect, Final Fantasy XVI is still an experience worth playing for any fan of the series. At its core it is fun, beauiful, intense, and impactful. I have far more happy memories with this game than I ever will unpleasant ones, and my opinion can only improve with upcoming DLC. Until then I have to judge the game as it is, and even with that in mind, what we have is still pretty dang great.

I absolutely loved the fights among Eikons, the main cutscenes, the gorgeous graphic, the darker aesthetics and the fantastic soundtrack. The source of inspiration of this game is clear and it comes from other series which I love (Game of Thrones, Attack on Titan, Elden Ring...), but still maintaining a Final Fantasy identity. The combat system it's enjoyable, maybe even too easy and forgiving. I also appreciated the brave choice of being a pure action game. Enemies and mechanics are often repeated, rpg elements including gear and crafting is almost absent, but I still had a good time for my 60 hours of gameplay.

Unfortunately there are also all the problems of FFIV, with uninteresting side quests, forgettable side characters, long dull dialogues which don't add anything to the experience, but actually feel outdated, like if a modern title was padded with content from an older MMORPG. In almost every quest you are asked to fetch an object or kill a monster after lengthy tedious dialogues. Most of the characters are bland and uninspired to the point of being almost annoying for their lack of depth, especially in the side quests.

The world is gorgeous to see and I have been particularly impressed with the vegetation richness which was probably also contributing to the framerate drop even in performance mode. I appreciate the connected locations without a proper open world which we have seen too many times, but despite the reduced size of the locations they still feel incredibly empty with no reward for exploration. Loot is practically absent and with no secrets to uncover you have little reason to explore the map. The experience feels very disconnected teleporting continuously from side quest to side quest which makes you miss the sense of journey which was so present in other titles.

The plot has its great moments especially when confronting major opponents and the story overall is well told especially compared to FFXV. That said, the world, its characters and their motivations didn't feel believable and as soon as you look a bit deeper into the narrative it makes less sense and it's hard to feel immersed into it.

It's a title where a player can find extremely high quality content unfortunately mixed with mediocre quests, dull characters, a world that feels empty and undercooked rpg elements.

Overall, the story, music, and visuals were all good. All the side quests were good and really added a lot more depth to all the characters and the world of Valisthea. I just think the story teeters a little too much on the philosophical debates and over emotional dialogue at times. I find them repeating the exact same points and lines throughout the story multiple times, especially if you do all the side quest stuff and read all the letters. For example, Jill said the word together over a dozen times and Clive had to explain this new world idea just as much. Cid and his daughter Mid I found to be my favorite characters, while Clive, Jill, and Joshua seemed a little stale and lacked any interesting character traits (just felt like they were always too emotional). Where the game really lacks however is the customizations, it’s pretty pathetic how little you can gather, collect, and customize in this game. You have 3 gear slots that just stat boost you a little each time you get something new, only the sword is ever a visual customization with no special powers of any kind ever. I crafted the most powerful sword you can get (excluding the final fantasy mode), and it looks exactly the same as the previous sword, seriously! And you can only equip 3 items (out of almost 50) that slightly boost your stats and only rarely give you a special ability. The combat was fun overall, and the ability tree was nice, however I feel like it did not offer much variety in terms of bosses (fought the same ones multiple times) and no elemental weaknesses infused. The Eikon fights were very fun and epic though. I just don’t understand why there were never better rewards or loot to chase in the game. You were stuck with the same outfit for the entire game, nor could you customize your party members in any way. There was little to no dialogue with party members as you were running around side questing, which was a bummer, you would have to occasionally turn around to acknowledge they existed (except for your wolf Torgol). So, I have to say it is good, but not great. Still totally worth playing or at least trying. Expand

For clarity, I have recently completed the game and have some content left to do in side missions and hunts.

    Positives:

    - Voice Acting
    - Combat is great but can get repetitive
    - Spectacle
    - Some great characters
    - A fantastic set of villains

    Negatives:
    - Poor writing in places
    - An over-abundance of relying on the player to seek out information that should be presented to them as part of the narrative
    - Side-quests aren't great and can be tedious.

The good; incredible storyline and script, great voice acting, well done character design, fun battle system, engaging boss mechanics, innovative gameplay with the eikon abilities and epic eikon controlled fights, the soundtrack. I believe this is what Square Enix were aiming for, and they have achieved that. The main focus of the game excels.

The bad; invisible walls... a game of this calibre with such impressive map designs shouldn't have so many invisible walls. Chocobo gameplay is fun but under utilised, a Chocobo racing or side quest relying on chocobo battle would have been fun. Adding mini games would have made FFXVI feel less monotonous. Having Torgal was awesome, however his role is limited, I feel that stronger attacks with a cool down and skill tree to progress his abilities would have been achievable and could have added a lot. Side quests and map exploration add good world building but the rewards are pointless so there is no incentive. The gearing and items feel lackluster and there is an illusion of crafting. Therefore, giving meaning to the in game currency, weapons and items would improve the game significantly. The game is too easy, and a harder difficulty should have been available for those who do not have the spare time to commit to a new game plus. The level system seems to be irrelevant to gameplay, as low level enemies appear to receive and deal the same amount of damage as higher level enemies. The story is strong in the first half but later in the game it falls down, I feel that removing at least 10 hours from the second half would have improved the game as it began to feel like a chore.

The combat is decent, but not great. You can button mash and get by, but when you learn the timing of combos, the combat because more engaging. I’m personally fine with them moving the series away from turn based since we have other franchises that can fill that niche. It still feels like a final fantasy story, but it is a lot different. With that said, this is the first final fantasy I’m likely to finish since FFX. In my opinion, the more action oriented combat fits the over the top stories FF is know for. On the other hand, I’m a bit annoyed that they went more action, but incredibly powerful characters can’t climb a fence or some fallen stones. I don’t mind the liberality so much, but the obstacles keeping you on course really break immersion. It’s not a home run, but the losers giving it a zero need to get a life. Play it or don’t play it, I don’t really care, but I’m enjoying it. Is it the best game ever, no. Is it a solidly fun experience about half way through, absolutely.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a long time FF fan and having just completed the game. Overall, I feel this game follows the franchise well but does strip away a few things which makes FF games what they are. For example, if there were no chocobo's or a moogle (which I feel they just threw in to hang around a hunt board just for the sake of it) in the game, then I would not know that this is a FF game.

Firstly, the story is very good, the first few hours as demonstrated in the demo for me was pretty mind blowing and I was hoping it would keep this trend throughout, but it does drop and picks up its intensity once more near the end of the game.

The combat is very Devil May Cry-esq as we were expecting. It is fun to experiment with the different variations, but I feel can get quite repetitive after a while. The fights and bosses weren't really that much of a challenge and there wasn't really a consequence if you were get to get a game over, as you just jump straight into the fight again but with full health whilst the enemies health is how it was before you died.

The voice acting for the majority of the game is excellent. Credit to SE for getting the right people for the job.

The music is brilliant. But then again I expect nothing less from SE. For me, they never fail to disappoint.

There were a few things that I found a little disappointing with the game. Firstly, I find it very one dimensional with not much variety. Story - fight - story - fight and so on. I miss the relaxing side challenges; the chocobo breeding, the card games, the blitzball. It would have been nice to see something like this and would have boosted my ratings on this game for sure.

Secondly, other than Clive and Joshua, I didn't fully connect with a lot of characters. I was thrilled to hear that Clive's sidekick would be a dog. But I honestly felt nothing for Togul, he didn't have any sort of personality which I felt would have been easy to put in with just little things, most of the time I forgot he was with me. All the other interesting characters were soon killed off, so they never had a chance to be fully memorable.

The ending. I'm not into these 'open for interpretation endings'. I get that it gets people talking about the game further. But come on, at least give us closure on something we've dedicated hours to playing.

Overall, I enjoyed this game and it was well worth my time. However, I just hope the franchise can return to it routes a little more and not continue to create games that aim for the wider audience. I get from a business perspective that doing this brings in the ££. But don't forget the fans that loved the previous games for what they were and have given the platform the franchise has today.

A very good game. Combat is fun, story is solid, and music is great! It’s not the best Final Fantasy title by any means.. But it’s certainly better than XV and XIII. A solid B tier game. My only gripes are the lack of an actual party, and too many cutscenes in the first act.

Not my favourite Final Fantasy but defiantly in my top 5.
Has a great story (mostly) and great characters, the biggest downside for me though was the lack of party members and the fact you only control Clive.
That said Clive and his on again off again "party" are still better than FF15's BTS on a road trip.

I liked, even platinum the game, there are still flaws. A questionable and outdated game design but enriched with grandiose scenes that will remain iconic.
The soundtrack is pretty good despite some dubious music choices.

-Combat is better than FF15, I would not be able to go back to 15 and I tried.

    Missing:
-Party System and Switching Party Members
-In-Depth Strategy, No Element Weakness that is not very relevant.
-Customization is extremely basic for weapons, aside what Eikon you use, it doesn't change unlike FF7 Remake weapons
It's lacking strategy planning overall. :(
Plenty of combat tactic when fighting, but hardly no need to plan ahead.

    Cons:
-Story suffers from "This appears now because I said so" syndrome where at any time, Clive could have sense Joshua but no Phoenix feather appeared before the sand town, or Torgal out of nowhere uses that ability but I still think Torgal saved Jill and Clive at the beginning and not Cid.
The story basically makes things up as it goes along for the sake to tell a story but not really.
-Enemies are too easy, even without the magic item, once you gain 3 Eikons, you spam abilities to win
It would have been better if they could have countered it or something.
-Magic accessory that makes the game easy, it destroys our efforts to gain a worthwhile Platinum Trophy.

This game is nothing short of a resurrection for the final fantasy saga.Heavy on fast paced and deep combat and somewhat light on the RPG component (which is by design) After all is said and done, when enough time has passed that trolls and envious gamers have lashed upon another exclusivity this will be recognized as one of the best entry in the Final Fantasy franchise.

I got in involved in the story of FF16 from the beginning of the game to the end, but it's not a perfect game, some part the story could've been improved, such as exploring more Jill's character and Benedikta's past, they are more things I would like to say about the story that could've been improved but that would be spoiler. The combat system is amazing and very enjoyable with memorable boss battles, especially the Eikon battles, you can kill your enemies with style and I'm very excited to see how much they will improve this combat in a future FF17. The soundtrack being wonderful is not a surprise, it's a Final Fantasy game after all, it's a game with memorable songs. FF16 is an enjoyable experience even with some aspects of the story lacking more depth in my opinion

I will come back and complete my proper review once I have completed the game. I am however sure this will be a fairly high score as I have been having a great time in the 10/12 hours I have played so far.
The plot grabbed my interest from the start and the voice acting has been excellent. The audio quality and music have been top notch so far.
Visually the game looks gorgeous and has some of the most impressive action set pieces I have ever seen.
Having a blast with FF16 so far and looking forward to how the plot unfolds.

OK so after a while longer playing there are some flaws... Dropped to 9/10.
The performance mode was slightly unstable at times especially in a couple of the big fight sequences.
As a played through i found myself wanting more choice regarding equipment customisation and variety of equipment.
A lot of the side quests, especially the early ones, are very simplistic and honestly a bit dull, i thought they could have done better there.

The combat is pretty great, its definitely the focal point of this entry. The Eikkon system is a neat addition but feels a bit shallow compared to the progression systems of the past. Gear is highly dependent on story progression so character customization feels like it lacks some of the choice that previous games had. The visuals are excellent but the frames do drop even in performance mode. The music is top tier. The main characters are great but supporting characters all sort of look the same to me. A lot of the strategy has been removed from the formula which was what initially drew me into the franchise back with FF7. Party members just sort of attack in the background while Clive strings together combos. The combat is a huge step up from FF15 but I feel the team oriented combat and character customization in FF7R is superior. The map system in FF16 is far superior to the sprawling open world of FF15 which had vast plains filled with nothing but enemies haphazardly placed throughout. With a smaller world, the vistas are more delicately crafted and have more attention given to their detail. Gear feels a bit shallow in this game as well, being highly dependent on story progression - you aren't able to go out of your way in order to find a secret chest with a super strong item like in past entries, you just sort of have to beat the next story quest and then buy it. Invisible walls are littered throughout and do break immersion a bit but I still prefer it to open world FF15. The only negative that I've been turned off by is that the side-quests are kind of annoying and mundane - they almost feel like padding, or that they are only there because they are expected to be there. The story actually takes place within the game this time and is quite good, it is definitely the biggest motivating factor pushing my gameplay forward. Ultimately FF16 is a good time and a huge step up from FF15. It lacks in some areas and excels in others. Its a good hack and slash game and a mid RPG. I think its worth your time.

TLDR: FF16 is a step up from the previous numbered entry in almost every way. Hack and slash fans will find a lot to enjoy but old school strategy fans may be left somewhat unsatisfied; however, the flashy gameplay, gorgeous visuals, great story, god-tier music, and new Eikkon abilities do a lot to make up for what's missing.

How It Stacks Up: It's a Final Fantasy in name only. Better to be compared to God of War. But as an action game, it does it pretty well. It's more story focused than gameplay focused though with a ton of cutscenes and quick time events. It's also very streamlined to the point of being very casual. But the story more than makes up for any flaws the game has.

Side quests only become interesting after the mid section of the game and especially very meaningful and memorable by the ending. This game is a huge Final Fantasy, one of the best, most adult stories of the saga, with relatable characters (main and secondary) and memorable moments scattered all over the game.

The gameplay changes from previous versions, being now a hack 'n slash with some (few) RPG mechanics. That, which isn't necessarily bad, has led to one of the biggest opinon diversity around the game. In y opinion, the game is really enjoyable as it is, but it's true that can be a little bit repeatitive at the beggining, when you lack a range of abbilities and everything is about pressing square and triangle plus evading. Later on, that range of abbilities will give diversity to some extent. Anyway, I did miss some more RPG mechanics: some altered status and elemental affinities and weaknesses would have been nice, maybe not as many as in the previous games, but a shortlist of them would have been possible to implement on a hack 'n slash game. When it comes to the difficulty, no: it's not a difficult game. Just as FF I, II, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII and XV weren't difficult. After leveling up and farming a little bit, you could destroy any enemy with a single attack, except for Weapons, Dark Eons, Omegas and wathever secret enemies. Ff franchise has never been a franchise of difficult games. They never had to. I died in the original FF VII only facing Emerald and Ruby Weapons, not before. So don't pay to much attentions to those saying is too easy. I feel they have never played a Final Fantasy before.

The art direction is very good regarding character design, but even better with the enviroments, giving the world of Valistea its own personality. Graphics are just amazing when it comes to visual effects and lighting, while music is just superb. Negative points come, however, for the spanish dubbing, lacking Spanish from Spain.

And the biggest cons of the game in my opinion: one, it lacks some more secondary missions, with better rewards or material motivations to follow them, like weapons or whatever. The economy system of the game is broken, being pieces of music the most expensive item you will buy. And finally, the game also lacks secret content: that is a foundamental of every Final Fantasy, and this one is empty of it. Maybe they keep it for future DLCs, but it always has been a core of every FF (except for the XV that doesn't even count for me). Some huge secret enemies apart from the hunts, secret eikons, weapons... That os what I really missed out. Much more than a turn based combat, much more than anything, because it was really enjoyable going for all that hidden content to make your team over powered.

Anyway, in the end a Final Fantasy is about walking side by side with your character through a wonderful story. And this one is one of the games that has made me feel more emotions of the whole franchise. That's all I was asking for.

Final Fantasy XVI is the new mainline game in the long running and beloved series from Square Enix. It features some deviations in gameplay from what you would typically expect from a Final Fantasy but remains true to the series central storytelling core.

Developed by Square Enix's Creative Business Unit 3 and helmed by well regarded FFXIV creator Yoshi-P, Final Fantasy XVI tries to set forth on a new style of game, and succeeds where it counts. The series has now seemingly fully transitioned to a more action RPG approach to its combat. This new combat is fast and reactive in a way never really seen before in a Final Fantasy Game. There are active dodge and parry systems built in, aerial moves, and over 32 new "Eikon Abilities" to weave in and out throughout combat encounters. These Eikon abilities add a good layer to the combat but kind of overwhelm it and feel like the only abilities you really use over and over again. The action is cinematic in a way that only the recent God of War games have been able to be. The camera zooms and shifts to showcase Clive in these really stylized visuals when a parry or dodge is timed perfectly. The action is pretty easy and forgiving for the most part. The game gives you a lot of accessibility and tools in game to help new or inexperienced players who are there more for the story than the action. these include ring and trinkets that will, for example, widen the dodge and parry timing considerably, auto consume potions, command your dog sidekick for you, auto charge magic ranged attacks, etc. There are some difficult optional enemies to be found through the hunt board, but even these will not tax a player who is experienced in action RPG gameplay.

But, like all Final Fantasy games, FFXVI is held high by its storytelling and characters. The story follows Clive and his adventure of personal redemption and continental revolution against his own troubled past and that of this new Final Fantasy world, Valisthea. The bones of the story is set up in a very game of thrones mold. There are several different factions on Valisthea who are all vying for varying levels of control and power. These factions are led by Dominants, humans who have been gifted the power to wield the power of and transform into the iconic and standard Final Fantasy summons, Titan, Shive, Bahamut, etc.

The main story is excellently presented, the voice acting is top tier, cinematic cutscenes are filled with intrigue and beautiful scenery. The game is filled with some of the best and most cinematic encounters I can remember in gaming. Particularly a mid to late game encounter between Clive and Dion, the dominant of Bahamut, that literally goes into outer space. This multiple phase fight and ensuing fallout is the best stretch the game has to offer. There is history and purpose in this conflict for all characters involved, leading to an immensely satisfying clash. Eventually, like most Final Fantasy games, the story shifts from its more grounded premise into a world ending threat that must be stopped. It's something that if you are familiar with the series is expected but ultimately disappointing. The final 15% of the game or so does not carry the same weight and intrigue as before.

The game is definitely not without its faults, framerate and visual issues are rare but present, the resolution of the story as mentioned before, but mainly where the game falls flat is its tacked on RPG elements to flesh out the gameplay and scope. In between these grand scale and wonderfully cinematic main story quests and encounters are some pure fluff and less realized quests. They include the always dreaded open world fetch or kill quests which really lack any depth at all. The crafting system is tacked on and lacks any depth or intrigue, it is basically just there to upgrade and create new weapons for Clive, but the gradual expansion of a good crafting system is no where to be found. You find the same materials late game as you did in the opening zones. Leading me to end up with thousands of hides and magic ash that has no use. They can be sold for money but there is nothing to spend the money on besides potions and audio reels for the main hideaway where you spend most of your time. The side quests range from paper thin to effective and engaging world building adventures, with no real way to decipher which one you are getting into. The first side quest literally has you grab some wood from nearby and bring it back to the quest giver.

Overall, the game was an extremely fun and pleasant experience, if a little unfocused in what it truly wanted to be.

The game has great visuals, lore, and all around has been enjoyable. Now there are some that are complaining that "it has too many white people" who cares it is based off of British medieval times. And if your looking for something that nods towards darker skin colors.... THE GAME IS ABOUT HOW PEOPLE ARE TREATED LIKE CRAP OR DIFFERENTLY JU AS T BECAUSE OF ONE PART OF THEM EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE THE SAME AS THE NEXT PERSON AND HOW SLAVERY IS BAD.

It is a PS5 exclusive for 6 months. You and be happy that is all it is because ff has been with playstation for the last 10ish mainline games. There has been some variation where they released on Xbox at the same time but Square Enix is a playstation company st the end of the day. As far as the overheating you ps5s. That is 100% your fault as I tested what people claimed caused it and with it set to the most graphic intensive setting and my ps5 in a 85° room it didn't come close so my guess is that people keep their gaming consoles locked inside boxes and pack the air vents (intake or outtake your pick) with dust and animal hair. Buy a can of compressed air and clean your systems it takes less than 3 minutes and you can buy compressed air most places they sell any electronics.

In conclusion FF16 is a good ARPG but not the best FF RPG. Your social takes have 0 to do with the quality of the game. If your and Xbox player you will get it the same time PC players do in December while us playstation players enjoy our next timed exclusive Final Fantasy. FF7 rebirth. Which you will get to play anywhere from 6-12 months later.

Now there are also some - that will probably cost this game the GOTY award.

Let's face it the motion blur is WAY too much and make me feel unwell. So quality mode feels unplayable.
Performance mode is way uglier and has a lot of drop of frame rate that you notice and feel.
For me this is makes it's not GOTY material unless they fix it..

That being said it's definitely one of the best game this year.

Graphic: the most appreciated part of the game. It's worth the AAA title but since the game is dark theme so almost 70% of the environment look dark and death, which is in the end I cannot enjoyed the environment at all.

World: I don't mind with the map point thing cause FF is not elden ring, let be real GOW also have same world map loading point like this. But again the feeling it gave me different from FFVX' world, FFXV world is also empty but stunning.

Music: always be the field Square is the expert. It's not perfect as FFVII remake but cannot complain anything.

Character: no development in character at all, even the timeline of the game is years. No deep down in character personality or growth aspect, only Clive have more story telling and other is very plain and straight forward, even Clive he is so straight forward person type since the beginning till the end. Not wrong since that is the thing he is emphasized for but I feel so unreal. Jill is big disappointing for me. I was looking forward for her back story but it's just over dramatic with lacking story content.

Combat: combat is fun enough with me but really not hard even with a person cannot play soul game like me. You just need patient repeat dodge and waiting for eikon skill to replenish and slowly reduce the enemy health (even with high difficult monster hunt). And no party member can be control is the huge minus.
I had so much fun with the combat, but as long as going sometime feel like chores because you have no choice other than control Clive.

50% side quest are not necessary. They can reduce the quantity then not so much complain.

In conclusion, I enjoyed the game for sure and the story sometime got me well but I don't think I can play NG+ and come back time to time like I did with FFXV. I hope next main line will be less serious less emperor more fantasy more world building, like old FFIX FFX. And please It's Final Fantasy, don't kill the party fighting thing, we need companion in action.

Weapons were literally just stat gains when they had so many knobs to turn to make them all have unique and interesting effects instead of "does this have bigger numbers than my current weapon?"

Side quest quality varied and it felt like a lot of padding. I'd rather have less quests and have them be more meaningful than have a ton of quests that literally don't do anything but increase my playtime with the game arbitrarily. Another HUGE problem was them locking the hard difficulty behind beating the game. The game is mind-numbingly easy and I don't understand why Square is so fond of this archaic practice. Players have different skill levels and it's just as important to satisfy the needs of your higher-skill players as it is your lower. They gave story mode and all these timely accessories for the inept, but competent players have to suffer through a boring experience before they can even feel a hint of challenge and even then, it's forced into a new game + scenario where you already have God-like abilities for the duration of the run. Square, stop it. Just make hard mode available for those who want to partake in the beginning. Your games are too easy.

The combat system is fun, but lacks depth due to the lack of weaknesses, resistances, status ailments, etc that make Arpgs fun and interesting to play. The only reason to switch up your load out is to try something new. There's no strategic benefit to changing up your abilities.

The story started out very strong, but ended with cliche "power of humanity/friendship vs jaded nihilism" tropes and was very disappointing. There were so many epic moments throughout, but the end made the journey feel pointless and left a lot to be desired. They were so close to greatness on this one... But that makes the game's flaws all the more frustrating.

Some of the best graphics ever displayed on a console. Truly 'next-gen.' Music was amazing throughout. Atmosphere and world-building were great. Voice acting was stellar. Combat was decent.

Side mission were appalling. Apparently they get better late on but by then I had learned to ignore them. Early ones are truly criminal and an insult to the player's time and intelligence.

THIS IS NOT AN RPG. There is no reason to do those side missions because the loot is common and found elsewhere (except for a small handful of late-game missions) and there is nothing to craft. Bosses drop materials which are crafted into the next weapon you're 'supposed' to have. Each sword only has two stats. There is no armour and no real 'build.'

Story is great at first but gets boring late on. There is over a dozen hours of cut-scenes and whilst some look great, many are just talking. I started skipping all cut-scenes late on.

The mission design is out-dated. Walk, kill enemies, walk, kill enemies. Cut scene. Rinse and repeat. Even though you have different elemental powers, THERE IS NO ELEMENTAL DAMAGE! Fire swords hurt fire enemies the same as frost enemies. WHAT. AN. OVERSIGHT. It's all just for show.

Boss battles are epic and the main reason to play this game. Gorgeous, over the top and beautiful.

No mini-games or the ability to play as another character, other than brief moments where you become a monster. Gets stale after a while. Mechanics could have done with some variety.

Too easy. Just keep spamming the same few abilities and you'll destroy 90% of the enemies, which lack variety. Hard mode is only unlocked for NG+ and most people won't have the stomach for a second playthrough.

Generally, I was disappointed because I had high hopes of something deeper and more strategic. FF7R is much better. That said, why would I still give it an 8? Well, there are a handful of moments in this game that are simply jaw-dropping and set a new bar. The epic boss battles are unbelievable, the graphics are gorgeous (although the game struggles to maintain 60fps in same simple areas) and you can easily get lost in the deep lore of the world.

Definitely worth playing, if only to see what you bought a PS5 for. I'm tired of indie games that look like 16bit games. I bought a PS5 because I wanted futuristic graphics, and this is it.

A very flawed, but nevertheless unmissable, epic adventure. Could have been a masterpiece. It's not. But it's still worth a week of smashing through it.

Some of the vistas are also stunning to look at.

Now as for the rest, it's pretty okayish with both stinkers and good moments.

So, basically the game tricks you at the start that it's gonna be brutal and unexpected, but once the intro is done it retracts from its decisions and it becomes the typical "go plant seeds and eventually kill God" type of game. There's just a couple, and literally a couple of shocking or surprising moments, but the rest is pretty standard and predictable.
I do appreciate their focus on acceptance and treating people fairly and equally, regardless of who they are. There's even a really charming character which works in a brothel, and is seen and treated as an actual human being, which is something you rarely find in games. I did love that focus.

The music is okay, the arrangements are super epic, but don't let that trick you, composition-wise it's nothing crazy. Yet there are some definite highlights. The simpler songs with just a piano or keys are beautiful, and the combat theme is also great. However, it is quite overused.
None of it is at a Nobuo Uematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda or Yoko Shimomura level though.
Music in cutscenes felt kinda weird a few times, like they put some song in the back to not make it awkward, and since it doesn't really match what's happening, it actually detracts a bit from the experience.

The big stinky is definitely the sidequests, (and one specific silly dialogue in an argument, which i wont get into cause spoilers) and it's strange, because they only give you decent sidequests when you're literally in the last mission. And they're quite a lot. They could've spread them more evenly throughout the game and give an overall more positive experience. But up until then, I can just remember 2 sidequests that were good, which are kinda early in the game. The rest are a chore to play.

    I'd give it a 7.5 but i can't so i'll just give it an 8.

The music is beyond great, the cutscenes as well, i wish we controlled the characters and performed the crazy moves in the cutscenes instead though, the game takes control too often, i also wish we could’ve transform all the Eikons we have, but you can’t unfortunately, even a mini version would’ve sufficed

The side quests were mostly boring, i found myself skipping them and just getting it done so i earn exp, the crafting system is really just a small bump (very small) in stats, i wish they could’ve incorporated the element of the Eikon into weapons so we have fun since we can’t transform to them willingly unless it’s story related

Really a 8.5/10 game, i enjoyed it and on my way to platinum it, but this falls in comparison to ff7 remake intergrade for example Is it an immediate buy? Yes if you can overlook all the things i mentioned above

Is it worth it? Yes because the foundation is excellent but falls short on some ends

Is it a good final fantasy game? Somewhat, the real time combat pushes people away from it because it was what essentially made the series, but players don’t really know what they want, it’s a creative director’s responsibility to make something and make it presentable to us, so i would say it’s better to be open to new things rather than a biased look, relax…you’ll live longer

Story- I'm realizing that this wasn't quite FF14 level in terms of story. It's good, but it didn't pull the heartstrings and had some missed emotional moments. It's really awkward when the orchestra is going and characters are crying and it doesn't resonate out. It didn't have the feeling of intense satisfaction at the end of it all. Voice Actors were mostly good. There were moments I asked in a husky voice, "Clive, can you stop whispering in that hustky voice all the time?" But overall, the storyline was good. 7/10

Graphics - few moments where frame rates were an issue. Panning camera too much can cause a bit of motion sickness. I understand the limitation of the hardware and can't wait until the PC version comes out. 9/10

Gameplay - It was nice to try out different skills and carry them into the fight. But I carried a specific set of abilities into each climatic fights. I wished the mounting and dismounting were a bit faster and didn't reset my camera angle, as that would've made ability point farming a bit less clunky. Non boss encounters were short and sweet. Boss encounters were great. Having unknown number of health bar resets kinda made the "health bar" feel pointless. Couple of boss fights didn't build up in intensity with phase changes and missed the mark for me. Overall, it was mixed in with some awesome fights like with titan and let downs and monotone ones. 8/10

Sounds and Music - Not much to say. Soken is the real God here. 10/10

Conclusion - After buying the PS5 for this title and having so much anticipation to the point of getting jealous of the people playing early, do I think it was worth $570? Afraid not. Maybe half of that? Maybe I'm spoiled by FF14 moments. But in slightly longer version of both shadowbringer and endwalker, the highs were so much higher as were the lowest of the lows. Setting them as the gold standard for me, I think this game is a good game and entertainment, but a new standard it is not.

I have just 2 words for my experience so far... Kyrie Eleison!

The graphics, art-style and cinematography is absolutely stunning! My jaw dropped wide open just watching the intro cut scene. Crisis Core on the Switch, I think, prepared me with an insight as to how the combat mechanics would work and, more generally, all of the newer mechanics and systems this game provides.
These are all certainly a huge change from the turn-based and conservative FF JRPGs I'm so heavily used to by now, but I am incredibly entertained and do not see it taking away from my experience whatsoever.

I am currently playing on game on action mode, as I am also a fellow masochist that always plays any game on the most difficult mode from the start, and I am thoroughly enjoying the rewards of being challenged in battles. My only critique yet is the lack of a "nightmare" or "souls-like" mode of difficulty from the beginning, only because I consider myself a veteran in the ARPG / multitasking-reaction-battle category and I imagine, like most games that don't involve player skill as its core mechanic, the game will only become easier as I don't think there is a player-skill ceiling to master once I optimise my equipment. I may yet be surprised, however, but for now this is the only thing holding me back from giving this a 10. You think I'm being unfair? Because difficulty is not of the essence of the franchise? Go cry in a corner, peasanty square-smasher.

In terms of actual performance, my expectations were incredibly high as I viewed (as an outsider) the PS series as the gold-standard of performance hardware alongside PC. Gratefully, the 60 FPS HD promised to me has definitely been delivered and I haven't yet noticed any visible frame drops on performance mode. I will admit that the FPS drop is noticeable on the max. graphical mode, but as I do not own any 4K output, there's no reason for me to use this setting!

With everything considered, I can completely see why Sony decided to showcase FFXVI with a console bundle. This is 100% what a flagship software title should live up to.

I've never experienced the endorphin tingles for 30 minutes straight without being on cocaine before, and I have FFXVI to thank for that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its a great game especially when it comes to the story. Yes I will admit there's certain things they could of shown better for the other main characters instead of just clive. But in the end they also get development. Especially Jill and Joshua. The side quests are actually not that bad, there way... better than most of the side quests from previous final fantasy games. You saying ffxv is better than ff16 is like a huge insult to creaters and devs that actually care for the final fantasy storytelling unlike ffxv. I will admit the gameplay is very fun and cool and the bosses have there own type of fighting style unlike ffxv. But what I was going to save is even though it has that the game is still a bit too easy. I hoping yoship makes it way harder for us because the bosses are fun cool to fight. Unlike again FFXV! So I do hope we get some dlc content. Because u know what?! The game deserves it. The first final fantasy game in a long time that actually has a really good story. That's all I really wanted from a final fantasy game in so long. The gameplay they could easily fix. Not the story. There's a little bit of nitpicks and stuff they didn't show but other that it was a really good story. Expand

I absolutely love this game. As a lifelong FF fan I love the route they took with this. It's not perfect but man it's a fresh take at one of the most beloved franchises in history. I really only have 2 issues. 1. All the blood and gore is great BUT no dismemberment? Hate that. It's already mature and the blood is everywhere so go ahead and let me cut ppl and monsters up for real.

    2. The sword scabbard design for Clive is so different and such an intentional choice that the fact the sheathing and unsheathing animations clearly have the blade slice thru the side of it is just wrong. Do it right and make it make sense.

The main content of this game is really strong, and I enjoy the story and the characters. Unfortunately, I don't like the side content very much. The side quests feel very MMORPG, and they're quite hand-holdy. I think I would have had less of a bad reaction about them if I hadn't just finished playing TOTK when I picked up this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great game, solid story with a few drawbacks.

As a long time final fantasy fan I will admit that I wasn't looking forward to the action oriented combat system shown in early trailers however, after having played the demo my opinion was quickly changed and I was excited to jump into the game on launch day.

Having played roughly 45-50hrs and completing the main quest I would say don’t go into this game with the expectation that this is an rpg. FF16 is a story driven action game with little exploration and very little in the way of loot, crafting and gear. The combat can be engaging but is overall very limited when it comes to your basic attacks. Combat generally consists of hacking and slashing, weaving magic, lunging, dodgeing, priming your weapon for a heavy attack and commanding Torgal. Most basic abilities can be unlocked in the first few hours and doesn’t really deviate as you progress. You will however, obtain and have access to eikon abilities which can change up the pace and provide some variety to combat.

Unfortunately in the way of enemies you wont find much variety (looking at you big enemy with giant axe) and you will be engaging with many of the enemies in the same way. The mobs are slow and will generally walk circles around you attacking ever so often making for quick work. Boss fights and mini boss fights are attack> dodge>eikon ability>dodge>attack… until they stagger and are eventually defeated. You do get access to a limit break which outputs more damage but it doesn’t add much to the gameplay. Overall the combat is lacking diversity and could have used move variety. In saying that, it is still enjoyable and creating combos is stylish and fun.

The game lacks a core party and Clive is essentially the only character you will be playing as, characters such as Jill will come and go as non-playable characters in your party to join you on your adventures. I personally would have liked some control over the party, similar to the commands that you can give Torgal as well as gear and accessories for the companions.

Characters in the game are interesting and mostly fleshed out save a few which appear after a time skip. Clive is a great character and the VA did an amazing job, the same can be said for most VA’s in the game. The graphics are phenomenal and the environments are spectacular with the exception of side quest npc’s. Performance does take a hit as a result of the games fidelity and I would recommend the graphics mode for fps consistency.

The story is very interesting but prepare to sit through hours of cutscenes. This wasn’t an issues for me personally as I found them enjoyable and engaging. The pacing however, can be very off at times. You will find yourself often entering a new town only to have to find a way to get past a gate and into the next area. By often I mean always. You will always need to find a friend of Cid’s, you will always need to get some kind of crest from them, you will always need to talk to npcs around town and you will always need to kill a few enemies for them. These side quests are obvious padding and in my opinion should have been left outside of the main story. It is very jarring to have just defeated a walking nuke only to run errands for a respected member of a small town.

Overall its a solid game with a lot to offer including some GOW3 level boss fights so if spectacle is something you enjoy I couldn't recommend this game more. With all my criticisms I still enjoyed the game thoroughly and recommend anyone it looking for a solid action game.

    Pros:
    Lush world
    Darker theme
    Active time lore is great
    Decent characters
    Combat is satisfying Cons:
Do miss the ability to play as multiple characters
Side quests need to take a lesson from Witcher 3
Dialogue moments outside of bigger cut scenes seem very flat

Overall a very good game, we all need to learn a game is not a zero just because you don’t like a few minors aspects of it.

Very good game, amazing story that pulls you in and engaging combat. Not perfect though (minimal RPG elements, limited exploring, side quests a bit dull, combat can feel a bit button mashing), but overall gameplay, story and combat mechanics overshadows its flaws.

    Where to even begin?

For the past 4 days I've been glued to the screen for 12+ hours each day, absolutely gripped by what we have got here. Wearing my bias on my sleeve, the only other FF game I played before this was Crisis Core and XIV. The rest I couldn't give a toss about. I played this game not because it's Final Fantasy, but because of the people who mad it. Heck, I got a PS5 because of the people who made this game.

In one short sentence; Worth it. Not disappointed.

For those that don't know CBU3 (Creative Business Unit 3) was responsible for the revitalisation of Final Fantasy 14 after its initial failed launch and its subsequent development since. Helmed by their director and producer Naoki Yoshida, the MMO has been going from strength to strength, which is a rare occurrence in the genre.

So when I heard that the next mainline FF game was going to have the same team attached to it, I knew it was going to be a great time. Just wasn't quite ready for how great of a time it will be.

Let's get something straight right out of the gate; Combat, gameplay loop and systems a Final Fantasy game does not make. Story does; and the story we have on hand here is most definitely 'Final Fantasy'. That means a great world, loads of character drama intertwined with the current geopolitical state of the world as we observe these larger-than-life tragedies through the characters they affect, rather than from a bird's eye view. We see and feel the personal stakes each character (protagonist, antagonist or otherwise) has wrapped up in the days' problems.

Combat is great and yes, it is FINALLY full and fully action combat. None of this weird, locking you into an attack animation once you press a button so it's not turn-based but actually it's turn based thing FF7R did.

Although playing in Graphics mode, being locked to 30fps, definitely introduces some input delay which can make or break some of the tougher encounters when it comes down to the wire, though it's nothing you can't get used to over the course of the game's runtime. Eikon abilities I'm happy to say are varied and combining them allows for countless different playstyles. Personally I prefer to endure a foe with precision dodges while whittling down their 'Will Guage' so they open up with a Stagger, which is when I unleash my big hitting, single target abilities while Limit Breaking or 'Priming', as Clive enters a Semi-Eikon status. Which is an approach just as viable as any other build. There is definitely a freedom of choice on mixing and matching abilities and builds are only as viable as the player's skilled at using them.

    Soken music.

Now at this point you might be thinking 'well but Yoake why did you give the game an 8? you've been singing its praises'

It's locked behind the purchase of a magical box from the wizard Sony.
The motion blur is still very noticeable even 40 hours in. We need to be able to turn it off, period. That alone is probably worth a full new playthrough as the scenery is extremely smeared anytime you aren't standing still. Not a problem during combat, as things move fast, but just for exploration and moving around, it needs to go.
Some pacing issues in the story that I understand, but still find jarring.

    All in all, this game is a masterpiece that will define the PS5 as a console. It is a must own and a must play. I eagerly look forward to CBU3's next entry into the line of Singleplayer FF games. Also while I have your attention;

    Pros:
    - Visually stunning, worlds, setpieces, spells during fights, everything really
    - Amazing sound and music, even the minor NPCs are voiced and sound good
    - Combo system is great, the way MC fights feels amazing
    - Characters, the cast is filled with likeable characters and are mostly well written

    Mixed:
    - Fully fleshed out lore sections, would have preferred other aspects to be as fleshed out
    - Cutscenes and QTEs, great but there's simply too much
    - Heavily influenced by FF14, this carries both good and bad

    Cons:
    - Missing FF mechanics, stats, element affinities, party customization, job changing, limit break moves. These things being missing actually influences a lot of the cons
    - Gearing and looting system very muted, limited effects and small value changes makes most gear boring.
    - Overarching fight strategy revolves around only stagger bars and dodging(or parry) with moveset of your choice, and the amazing combat cannot carry it the entire way
    - Sidequests are bottom tier and do not belong in an action game like this. It ruined pacing and enemy diversity

FFXVI isn't the worst game ever like many people online would have you believe. However, it certainly isn't perfect by any means, and has a number of flaws holding it back from all of it's potential of being a truly great game.

    Pros:

    * For every weak character in the cast, there are at least two strong and well-written characters. One particular highlight for me was a character you'll meet early on named Cid, who oozes with charm, personality, and might just be the best Cid in the series.

    * The voice acting is absolutely stellar. Almost every single character in the main cast is voiced beautifully and helps carry the scenes even when they are particularly lacking (which will be elaborated on.) Ben Starr in particular does an excellent job as Clive, to the point where his voice during some particularly emotional scenes brought me to the brink with tears.

    * The battle system is very good, although the amount of time before it truly expands and the many hours between the unlocking of new skills will make some encounters tedious.

    * The accessibility and optimization in this game is excellent, from the various rings included to the Active Time Lore feature. (The latter I had to use many times, and although I did not use the former many times, I hope that the rings can help someone's experience.) Besides the current lack of the option to remove motion blur (which is to be patched,) I hope that many games as a whole will take a page from FFXVI's book and implement these features into their games.

    * The soundtrack is amazing, enough said.

    * There are certain over-the-top battles roughly every 7-9 hours, and they are the best moments in the game. Some of them are perhaps even some of my favorite moments in the series, which considering the many moments so far, is hard to accomplish.

    Cons:

    * The women aren't really written that well, and considering the other characters and relatively well-written LGBTQ+ characters in this game (whom were actually confirmed as queer, to my extremely pleasant surprise), it's truly such a shame that they round out as the weakest of the cast. Our main heroine is a great character when the writers allow her to BE one, and a certain character (those whom have finished the game might have a solid guess on who) deserved so much more than what she was given.

    * Without giving much away as well, while the antagonists often pose a threat, but there were very few who ultimately intrigued me. Many of them are very weak in terms of writing.

    * The pacing is not too awful, but just enough to detract from the experience. FFXVI ultimately has one of the same, and biggest, flaws of Endwalker: after an extremely large climatic event that rocks your socks off and makes you invested in what happens next, there is often a boring quest that while contributing to the plot, takes you out of the suspense that the story was meant to make you feel.

    * Near the third act, there are many reused mobs that make the game rather predictable in terms of action. I actually counted one mob adjacent to a miniboss used about four times within the span of the third act, and that's not counting how that boss can be boiled down to a recolor with different colored attacks. (And, while the recolor reason is somewhat valid in that case, there are some bosses that do not get that excuse.)

    ------

Overall, if you are looking for an Action RPG with an emphasis on a solid gameplay with great characters, then FFXVI is absolutely the game for you. However, do not expect a revolutionary combat system or story, and as with almost every game, please be sure to come in with your expectations mildly tempered.

I think the story and cutscenes are great so far. I don't mind being on rails so long as the rollercoaster is fun with lots of twists and turns and loop-de-loop here and there and so far the story has that in abundance. I understand the criticisms of inclusion and the weakness of many of the women in the game, but I think those criticisms are a bit overblown. Overall, the setting in Final Fantasy games has always been a Japanese take on European fantasy, so the feudal values and almost exclusively European looking cast is fitting. That said, I would be interested to see a modern Final Fantasy set with a woman as the lead or even a person of color. Maybe in the next numbered game they could try that.

The combat feels fresh and active. The character customization is a bit lacking for a role-playing game.

My main complaint about the game is the poor performance on the Playstation 5. Even in Performance mode the game struggles in some fights and scenes. Even when you lock your Playstation to 1080p. They try to hide this with extreme motion blur but that makes the game somewhat headache inducing if you move the camera around a lot while running around in open areas. It is such a shame to see one of the biggest negatives of a game be the performance because otherwise this game is a solid 9/10 for me.
